This guide shows you how to plan, research and write A Level History Coursework for AQA using ideas, resources, examples and structure. This coursework is weighted in the following format. Assessment Objective One (AO1) 10% (20 marks), Assessment Objective Two (AO2) 5% (10 marks) and Assessment Objective Three (AO3) 5% (10 marks). For AQA coursework this gives a total of 20% (40 marks) divided as shown above across all three of the A Level History Assessment Objectives.

A Level History Coursework AQA – Ideas, Examples and Resources

Choosing an Issue and Question – You are required to identify an issue or topic that you wish to study and develop a question from this. This gives a broad scope for potential questions. There are however two specific requirements of the question.

  • The question must not duplicate any of the content that you are studying for examination assessment in components 1 and 2.
  • The question must place the issue or topic in the context of approximately 100 years of history.

Question Ideas, Example and Selection

There are two potential ways to ensure that you cover the 100 year requirement for this coursework. You could identify an issue and related question which traces development over approximately 100 years. Alternatively, you could focus on a narrower issue but place it in the context of a 100 year period. Lets look at a couple of examples below to make this clear.

  • Q1. Q. ‘Despite a period of unprecedented economic and social change, British women remained marginalised and downtrodden’. During the period 1760-1867, assess the validity of this view. – This is the perfect example of a broad issue and question from which you could analyse development over the time period.
  • Q2. In the context of the period 1905 to 2003, to what extent was the Cuban missile crisis the biggest turning point in the relationship between Russia and the USA? – This question highlights a more specific issue (the Cuban missile crisis) and places it in context of the relationship between the two countries over the c100 year period.

There are some key points to consider when selecting a question for your coursework.

  • Question formulation – Students are advised to use the type of question formulations seen in AQA examinations and shown in the examples above.
  • Historiographical debate – There needs to be a scholarly debate around the question or issue. This means differing views on the question from different historians. This makes it easier to select appropriate works to analyse and compare.
  • Primary sources – Is there a range of primary sources and primary material available to support the coursework? These primary resources need to be accessible to the student.

Coursework Resources

  • Library – school, local, college, university – you should be able to borrow appropriate works.
  • Teacher – your teacher should be able to provide you with copies of appropriate resources to use.
  • JSTOR – www.jstor.org – contains a large collection of journal articles from historical publications covering numerous topics. These will often engage in the historical debate by replying to opposing views.
  • Purchase Books – many second-hand books are available to purchase at very cheap prices through Amazon or similar sites.

A Level History Coursework AQA – Structure and Planning

First section – introduction to the question (c. 350 words).

Introduction to the overall topic. You need to put the question into context by providing relevant information regarding what was happening at the time. You then need to define any key terms in the question. For the British women example question above you would need to define ‘remained marginalised and downtrodden’ .

This we could do by defining;

  • remained as showing continuity rather than change
  • marginalised as a group treated as insignificant and peripheral.
  • downtrodden as a group oppressed or treated badly by those in power.

You would then need to set-out valid criteria by which the question can be judged in order to provide an accurate answer. These criteria will go on to become your factors as you can see in the plan below.

For the British women example question, we could potentially use the following criteria to judge whether they remained marginalised and downtrodden. Did women’s lives change for the better, during the period, in the following different areas?

  • Socially and Culturally
  • Legally and Politically
  • Education and Work

Second Section – Historians Viewpoints (c. 800 words – 400 each)

In this section we look at the viewpoints of two different academic historians. In order to achieve the highest marks, Level 5 (9-10 Marks) we need to do the following:

  • Show a very good understanding of the differing historical interpretations raised in the question.
  • Convincingly evaluate the interpretations with reference to time, context and/or limitations placed on the historians.

Using the example Cold War question shown above, you could analyse the views of a US historian writing after the Cold War has ended, with a Soviet historian writing during the period. This would enable you to contrast the content of both works and evaluate the interpretations given. This would also show how the time period affected the works, how limitations affected the works, how purpose affected the works, amongst many other issues that help to explain the authors differing viewpoints.

Third Section – Factor 1 and Source 1 (c. 650 words Factor 1 and 350 words Source 1)

In this section you cover the first factor that you have identified from your criteria in the introduction, as well as one of your primary sources that matches with this theme. So for the British women example question this section would concentrate on the Socially and Culturally factor that we are using as criteria to answer the question. Crucially you have to cover the time period and show your understanding of change and continuity as illustrated by the mark scheme detailed below.

  • Level 5 (17-20) marks – Very good understanding of change and continuity within the context of approximately 100 years.

You then add to this section your evaluation of your first primary source that matches with this theme. So for the British women example question you would have a primary source that related to the Socially and Culturally factor being covered here.

Fourth Section – Factor 2 and Source 2 (c. 650 words Factor 2 and 350 words Source 2 )

In this section you cover the second factor that you have identified from your criteria in the introduction, as well as one of your primary sources that matches with this theme. So for the British women example question this section would concentrate on the Legally and Politically factor that we are using as criteria to answer the question. Crucially you have to cover the time period and show your understanding of change and continuity as illustrated by the mark scheme detailed below.

You then add to this section your evaluation of your first primary source that matches with this theme. So for the British women example question you would have a primary source that related to the Legally and Politically factor being covered here.

Fifth Section – Factor 3 and Source 3 (c. 650 words Factor 3 and 350 words Source 3 )

In this section you cover the second factor that you have identified from your criteria in the introduction, as well as one of your primary sources that matches with this theme. So for the British women example question this section would concentrate on the Education and Work factor that we are using as criteria to answer the question. Crucially you have to cover the time period and show your understanding of change and continuity as illustrated by the mark scheme detailed below.

You then add to this section your evaluation of your first primary source that matches with this theme. So for the British women example question you would have a primary source that related to the Education and Work factor being covered here.

Sixth Section – Overall Conclusion (c. 350 words)

In the final section you need to produce an overall conclusion that fully answers the coursework question. So for the British women question you would be answering ‘did they remain marginalised and downtrodden during this period?’. This will take into account everything you have considered throughout the piece of work including your criteria, the viewpoints of the academic historians, the primary sources and the factors that you have covered from your criteria. In reaching a final judgement and conclusion, you need to take into account the entire period considering continuity and change across it, as you should have done throughout the rest of the coursework.

A Level History Coursework AQA – Primary Source Analysis

A Level History Coursework AQA

Looking at the primary source mark scheme table from the AQA website can help you to understand the requirements. Firstly, you must ensure that three sources are used and that there are a minimum of two different types (can be two different types of written source). To achieve the highest marks you must then ensure that a range of relevant and well supported comments are made on the value of the sources. Finally, you must provide a balanced and convincing judgement on the merits of each source in relation to our question.

Assessing Your Primary Sources

  • Provenance – The five W’s of Who, Why, What, When, Where; can help you to identify the provenance of a primary source and assess its value or limitations.
  • Tone and Emphasis – How does the tone and emphasis impact the value of the source. Is it impartial, critical, formal, aggressive, empathetic, mocking, candid etc?
  • Content – What is the actual content of the source saying? How true is this in terms of your contextual knowledge? Is there value in the inaccuracies of the content?
  • Value/Limitations and Judgement – The above three points ( Provenance, Tone and Emphasis and Content ) can be used to assess how much we can learn from the source, by weighing up value and limitations, as well as giving judgement on the merit of the source.

Who is Ryan Routh? What to know about the suspect in the Trump golf course incident

The man arrested in connection with what the FBI is calling an apparent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has a lengthy criminal record and recent fixation on global politics, particularly Russia's war in Ukraine.

The suspect, whom local officials identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon on Interstate 95 near West Palm Beach, Fla., after what authorities say was possibly an attempt on Trump's life at his golf club — which would be the second attack in the last nine weeks.

The Secret Service said an agent who was stationed one hole ahead of Trump on the Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach spotted a rifle sticking out of a fence. The suspect holding the rifle was hiding in the shrubbery some 300 to 500 yards away from the Republican presidential nominee.

Republican presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump, arrives at Harry Reid International Airport to board a plane after a campaign trip on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Trump was targeted in apparent 'attempted assassination,' the FBI says

The agent opened fire on Routh, but Routh took off in a black Nissan, which authorities located on the highway a short while later, thanks to an eyewitness tip. He left behind the loaded rifle with a scope as well as a digital camera, a backpack and a plastic bag of food, according to the unsealed criminal complaint.

Routh did not fire his gun and did not have Trump in his "line of sight," Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe said on Monday. The complaint cites cell phone data that suggests Routh had been "in the vicinity" of the golf course for roughly 12 hours, from 1:59 a.m. ET to about 1:31 p.m. ET, when the agent noticed the rifle through the fence.

Authorities say it's not clear how long Routh — a longtime North Carolina resident who most recently lived in Hawaii — had been in Florida. They believe he acted alone.

Routh has been charged with possession of a firearm as a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Photos show a rifle and backpack found by law enforcement at the fence of a golf course where former President Donald Trump was on Sunday. Secret Service agents fired at a suspect along the fence in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Here's everything we know about the apparent assassination attempt on Trump

In his first appearance in a West Palm Beach federal courtroom Monday morning, Routh — wearing a navy blue prison jumpsuit and shackles — appeared subdued and respectful and in good spirits. He could be seen laughing at times with his federal public defender.

The judge told Routh he qualified for a federal public defender because "you have little or no assets." Routh said he has zero funds and no savings, and he reported making an income of $3,000 a week but didn't specify the source. He said he owns two trucks in Hawaii and helps support his 25-year-old son.

Routh will remain in custody until his arraignment on Sept. 30.

Public records, a self-published book and previous interviews have painted a picture of the 58-year-old as a supporter turned critic of Trump who was passionate about defending Ukraine in its war with Russia and even traveled there in the hopes of taking up the fight.

Here's what we know about him so far.

He has a criminal record dating back decades

Routh spent most of his adulthood in North Carolina, before moving to Hawaii in recent years.

His LinkedIn page says he pursued a mechanical engineering degree at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University from 1995 to 1998. But the university told NPR via email that Routh only "attended two semesters nearly 30 years ago."

"He did not earn a degree from the university, and was last enrolled in December 1995," wrote director of media relations Jackie Torok.

Routh was hailed as " super citizen if not a super hero " by the Greensboro News & Record in 1991 after he fought a suspected rapist and assisted in his arrest — which earned him an Academy Award-shaped "Law Enforcement Oscar" from the Greensboro chapter of the International Union of Police Association.

But records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction show that Routh has a long history of getting in trouble with the law himself, including a 2002 conviction on a felony charge of possessing a weapon of mass destruction.

A December 2002 story in the Greensboro News & Record recounts an incident in which Routh was pulled over during a traffic stop on a Sunday night. He "put his hand on a firearm" and drove to his roofing business, where he barricaded himself inside for three hours. The weapon-of-mass-destruction charge pertained to a "fully automatic machine gun," the newspaper reported.

Jeffrey Veltry, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s office in Miami, told reporters on Monday that Routh had been the subject of a 2019 tip to the FBI alleging he was a felon in possession of a firearm. He says the agency investigated that tip, but the person who allegedly made the complaint could not verify providing the initial information.

Routh was charged with several other misdemeanors and felonies between 2001 and 2010, including a hit-and-run offense, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing stolen goods.

National Security

How was a man with an ak-style rifle able to get within 500 yards of trump on sunday.

Separately, North Carolina judicial records list Routh as the defendant in over half a dozen court cases between 1991 and 2016, including tax delinquencies and bad checks.

Routh wrote on his LinkedIn page that he had "passed along any meager remnants of myself in North Carolina and relocated to Oahu." He has lived and worked in Hawaii since 2018, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser , which cited public records.

The paper cited "law enforcement sources" as saying that Honolulu police have records of four interactions with Routh: two in 2019 — including an incident where he and two others allegedly squatted on property — and another two in 2021, when Routh reported being assaulted by a resident whose home he was working on as a handyman.

Routh describes himself as the owner of Camp Box Honolulu, a company that builds portable storage units and tiny homes.

He once supported Trump but recently donated to Democrats

North Carolina voting records list Routh as unaffiliated with any party, though they also show that he voted in person in the Democratic primary election in March 2024.

He is also listed as having voted in the general elections in 2008 and 2012, as well as municipal elections in 2009.

Routh has a history of donating to political causes, as Federal Election Commission records show. He donated to the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue nearly 20 times — in amounts ranging from $1 to $25 — between September 2019 and March 2020.

Former President Donald Trump is rushed offstage during a rally on July 13, 2024 in Butler, Pa., after an attempted assassination.

In a 2023 self-published book, Routh referenced his former support for Trump, writing that he must take part of the blame for electing Trump as president, "but I am man enough to say that I misjudged and made a terrible mistake."

In the book, he referred to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection as a "catastrophe … perpetrated by Donald Trump and his undemocratic posse."

Routh's 291-page book, Ukraine's Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment, and the Global Citizen—Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea, WWIII and the End of Humanity , covers a topic that seems to have consumed Routh in recent years.

Routh is an avid supporter of Ukraine's defense

Routh has expressed strong support for Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia's full-fledged invasion in early 2022, and he was on a mission to get foreigners — himself included — to the front lines.

His goal was to "fight for freedom and human rights," he wrote in his book.

Routh traveled to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv that year but was told — given his age and lack of military experience — that he was "not an ideal candidate," as he told Newsweek Romania in 2022.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lammy meet with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kyiv, Ukraine, Wednesday.

"So plan B was to come here to Kyiv and promote getting more people here," he said.

Since then, he has used social media to encourage and attempt to recruit foreigners to fight in Ukraine, and he has spoken about those efforts in media interviews.

Routh told The New York Times in March 2023 that he was seeking recruits among Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban, aiming to purchase passports through Pakistan ("since it's such a corrupt country") and move them — in some cases illegally — into Ukraine from Pakistan and Iran. The Times described Routh as a "former construction worker from Greensboro, N.C. … who spent several months in Ukraine last year."

That same month, he complained to Semafor about the Ukrainian government's lack of support, saying it was being overly rigid about admitting foreign soldiers, especially from Afghanistan, over concerns that they might be Russian spies.

"I have had partners meeting with [Ukraine's Ministry of Defense] every week and still have not been able to get them to agree to issue one single visa," said Routh, who was identified by Semafor as the head of the International Volunteer Center in Ukraine — "a private organization which helps foreigners seeking to assist the war effort connect with military units and aid groups."

A representative from Ukraine's foreign legion told CNN that Routh had reached out to it several times online but "was never part of the legion and didn't cooperate with us in any way."

"The best way to describe his messages is — delusional ideas," said Oleksandr Shaguri, an officer of the Foreigners Coordination Department of the Land Forces Command. "He was offering us large numbers of recruits from different countries, but it was obvious to us his offers were not realistic. We didn't even answer — there was nothing to answer to."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the apparent assassination attempt against Trump in an X post on Monday , saying, "political violence has no place anywhere in the world."

When asked about the incident on Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it shows that "playing with fire" has consequences — an apparent reference to U.S. support for Ukraine.

Routh's family has defended him

One of Routh's sons, Adam, told Reuters immediately after the incident that it was not something he believed his father would do.

Another, Oran, told CNN that it's not like his father "to do anything crazy, much less violent."

"I don't have any comment beyond a character profile of him as a loving and caring father, and honest, hardworking man," Oran Routh said in a statement.

Suspect in Trump Golf Course Episode Ran a Business in Hawaii

In the town of Kaaawa, he constructed tiny homes at cut-rate prices and neighbors described him as a handyman who was often eager to help.

a level history coursework 2022

By Yan Zhuang and Jill Cowan

Yan Zhuang reported from Kaaawa, Hawaii, and Jill Cowan from Los Angeles.

  • Sept. 17, 2024 Updated 4:06 p.m. ET

In Hawaii, Ryan W. Routh espoused lofty goals to help alleviate homelessness in a state with severe housing shortages and income inequality. His business constructed tiny homes at cut-rate prices, with a goal of providing a modicum of shelter for those struggling on the island of Oahu.

But Mr. Routh also seemed to lack patience for anyone who disagreed with him, based on interviews with local residents and his own writing.

Mr. Routh, 58, ran a business called Camp Box Honolulu, which aimed to cheaply and quickly build mobile homes small enough to avoid what his website called Honolulu’s onerous and “overloaded” permitting process, according to his website.

He lived for decades in North Carolina before he moved to Hawaii several years ago, a residency that was broken up by travel to Ukraine in 2023 to assist the war effort. His letters to the editor first appeared in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in 2018, and state records indicate that he filed business paperwork for Camp Box Honolulu in January 2019.

In the small town of Kaaawa, Hawaii, neighbors this week described him as a handyman who was often eager to help in the community, though many said they never really got to know Mr. Routh.

David Stant , 61, who lived down the street, described Mr. Routh as a nice but quiet man, while Mr. Routh’s partner, Kathleen Shaffer, was more extroverted. Mr. Routh was a skilled builder who renovated his own home largely by himself and built tiny homes in the front driveway, Mr. Stant said.

Mike Goddard, OCR History Subject Advisor

Mike Goddard

Here at OCR we’ve had lots of queries from centres in recent weeks about marking coursework, or non-exam assessment (NEA). For History, this means unit Y100.

There have been questions about how to apply the mark scheme. This isn’t surprising as it hasn’t been assessed for two years, so a larger number of teachers than normal will be submitting marks for moderation for the first time. We’ve also had questions about administrative requirements, and most particularly about whether any allowances should be made when marking for the abnormal and difficult circumstances many students have had to contend with while completing their assignments.

Regarding that last point, the JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) has recently released guidance , which makes it clear that all NEA must be marked in the same way as before the pandemic disruption. This is really important, as it will help ensure that all students’ work is marked to the same standards.

As the JCQ guidance also says, the 2022 grading process that takes place after marking, when the grade boundaries are set, will provide a safety net. So please don’t think that by marking your students’ work to pre-pandemic standards this year, you are in any way doing them an injustice. (For more on 2022 grading, please see this Ofqual article from September last year.)

In the light of that recent JCQ announcement, and the queries we’ve had from you, we thought it would be helpful to provide a quick summary of the support available to ensure that you are marking to the correct standard.

Guides to applying the mark scheme

There are several resources that will help you have confidence in your application of the mark scheme for Y100:

  • A free on-line marking course is available on OCR Train . This can be completed in your own time and includes a series of tests designed to ensure that you are correctly allocating levels to pieces of work.
  • There is also a useful video on YouTube , in which the principal moderator for Y100 talks through how to mark and annotate an example script.
  • And we’ve also summarised top tips from the video on our website, along with a pdf of the script used in the video itself.
  • We’ve also made a guide to assessing AO2 in particular, in response to centres asking us for more detail on how to assess the evaluation of primary sources in Y100.
  • Each year we run CPD sessions which include exemplar scripts as well as advice and guidance. You can access the materials from past courses on the CPD section of our website .
  • Finally, do refer to the reports on Y100 which are published after each series, which often include pointers on marking and annotation. You can access these on the Assessment section of our website.

Administrative points to remember

General information on NEA administration is available on our website .

For A Level History specifically, there are a couple of points to remember:

  • All titles chosen by students entering Y100 this summer need to be formally approved by us (we ask you to submit them by the end of January). This is done by using the title proposal tool on our website. If you are not sure whether you have approval for all your students’ titles this year, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll be happy to check!
  • There is a candidate cover sheet on the administration section of our History web pages. It is not compulsory to use this, but many teachers find it helpful.
  • There is advice about sending us work in section 9 of the Guide to Y100 .

Looking forward to next year’s cohort

We hope that your students enjoy researching and writing their essays for Y100. The independent study remains an important part of A Level History, highly prized by higher education institutions. Each year we’re really impressed to see the range and diversity of titles submitted.

Remember, there is support available for students when they come to think about their assignments:

  • You and they can browse previously approved titles, for example by using a key word search, on the title proposal tool on our website.
  • There is an independent study guide aimed at students on our website, which details approaches students may wish to take.
  • Emily Oakes, in our subject advisor team, has previously written a blog with tips about carrying out research remotely for history NEA.
  • We recently published a guide to finding primary sources for 20th century British history topics . Aimed at students interested in researching the histories of equality and diversity in Britain, it has been compiled by Dr Marcus Collins of Loughborough University.
  • Finally, we will, as always, be offering CPD on Y100 in the next school year. Keep an eye on the Professional Development section of our website and be sure to have signed up for history updates (details below) to get details of when these become available.
