These features, however, help point out where students went wrong and offer valuable learning opportunities that can help students enhance their understanding of appropriate spelling and punctuation.”

In her essay, Barroso discusses the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating computers into education. They allow schools to maximize online resources, foster student engagement, and make it easier for teachers and students to perform school-related tasks. However, they may make students lazy to check mistakes, thinking that the computers will automatically check them. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons.

Fox discusses the state of society today where we rely far too much on computers. They help us greatly in our daily lives, but they have made us depend on technology for information rather than thinking for ourselves. And if something goes wrong, like the servers crash, the world is at a standstill. Computers are a net good for society, but we must avoid revolving our lives around technology. 

“In data science terms, this phase is somewhat akin to ‘Model Training’ — the more things a child is exposed to the more the synapses associated with it get built. A good example is language — the more a child is exposed to linguistics in early years, the more evolved the area of her brain that is associated with languages would get. Prakash discusses the different ways in which our brains operate as computers. An information processing system has five components: input, output, storage, processing, and program. Best Laptop For Writers

The best laptop for writers we've tested is the Apple MacBook Air 15 (2024), a premium ultraportable. It has a sturdy but thin design, making it well-suited for on-the-go use, and its battery easily lasts through a full workday. The user experience is excellent, as it sports a sharp, bright display, a spacious keyboard, and a large haptic touchpad. The 15-inch display is great when you need to keep your reference material open while writing, and its 16:10 aspect ratio gives you some extra vertical real estate over a standard 16:9 screen. Port selection is limited, though. It only has two USB-C ports, and while you can run two external displays, this is only with the lid closed. Performance-wise, Apple's M3 SoC easily handles most writers' workloads, like text processing, web browsing, and video playback.

If you want a smaller form factor, the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2024) is a good choice, too. It's the same device but with a 13-inch screen and worse speakers. Don't worry, the keyboard and touchpad still feel great despite the smaller chassis! If you want to save a bit more money, Apple still sells the M2-based Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022)  as a budget-friendly alternative; the differences are minimal, with slightly less performance and battery life, with support for only one external display.

Best Windows Laptop For Writers

If you prefer a Windows laptop, get the HP Spectre x360 14 (2024) instead. This premium 2-in-1 laptop offers an excellent user experience and is fantastic for on-the-go use thanks to its compact 14-inch form factor. It features a sturdy all-aluminum chassis, a great and spacious keyboard, and an excellent large touchpad with haptic feedback. You get the same 16:10 aspect ratio as on the MacBook but a nicer 2.8K OLED display that supports both touch and pen input, which is great if you want to use the laptop in tablet mode to mark up your writing with handwritten notes.

Performance is a non-issue, as this laptop comes with Intel's Core Ultra 5 or 7 CPUs, which can easily handle text processing and other writing workloads. The Spectre x360 has a better port selection than its Apple counterpart, featuring one USB-A port, two USB-C ports, and a combo mic/headphone 3.5mm jack. While the battery life isn't quite as good as the MacBook's, it isn't far off and is enough for a full day of writing, coming in at around 11 hours of use. Best Mid-Range Laptop For Writers

Our best mid-range pick is the HP Pavilion Aero 13 (2024), a 13-inch ultraportable. While the display is smaller, both the FHD+ and QHD+ IPS panels are bright and sharp, so they are great to use. One significant compromise is the build quality; the chassis has significantly more flex and uses cheaper materials than the premium models above, and the finish is prone to scratching from everyday use. If you can overlook the build quality, this laptop has a lot to offer. It's configurable with AMD's Zen 4 Ryzen CPUs that can handle intensive multitasking, and you get 16GB of RAM. The RAM isn't user-replaceable, but it shouldn't be an issue for writers. There's a wide port selection with four USBs and an HDMI port. Battery life is great at around 10 hours of light use, and you can charge the laptop via USB-C—say goodbye to hauling around proprietary chargers!

If you want something with more screen real estate, get the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024), a 14-inch 2-in-1 Chromebook. ChromeOS is more limited for software compatibility, so be sure to check if you use any specialized programs. OS limitations aside, this laptop offers a great user experience. Its IPS display looks vibrant and features both touch input and stylus support (although a stylus isn't included). Unfortunately, the display has poor reflection handling. Direct light sources are easily visible, so this isn't the best choice for working in coffee shops or outside on a nice day. On the bright side (no pun intended), the performance is great. Its Intel Core Ultra CPUs can easily handle word processing and multitasking, so it won't be an issue if you like to keep far too many Chrome tabs open. Its keyboard and touchpad are comfortable to use and its battery life is great at over 10 hours of light use.

Best Budget Laptop For Writers

The best budget laptop we've tested for writers is the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 (2023), a 16-inch Windows ultraportable. This model feels well-built and is easy to carry around despite its size. You can configure it with an AMD Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 CPU, which are more than adequate to handle writing tasks like text processing, web browsing, and video playback. Most models come with 8GB of RAM, which can be a bit limiting, depending on your workload; however, you can find models with 16GB through some retailers or upgrade it yourself. You may need to charge throughout the day as the battery lasts only a little over eight hours of light use.

The overall user experience is good. It has a comfortable keyboard, a large, responsive touchpad, and a decent 720p webcam. Its 1080p display looks reasonably sharp but isn't the brightest, so visibility may be an issue in well-lit rooms. You get Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity, a fingerprint sensor for quick logins, and a decent port selection with three USB-As, a USB-C, and an HDMI. Unfortunately, the USB-C doesn't support video output, so you'll have to use the HDMI port to connect an external display.

Best Cheap Laptop For Writers

The best cheap laptop we've tested is the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 (2023). You can find this laptop for as little as $300 to $500 USD. Writing isn't particularly CPU-intensive, so any CPU and RAM configuration will do. However, we highly recommend getting the Core i3-N305 CPU with 8GB of RAM if you're a relatively heavy multitasker. If you have trouble finding it elsewhere, you can get this configuration (paired with a touch-sensitive FHD display) from  Lenovo . The 1080p display looks sharp and gets bright for use in most indoor settings. Battery life is outstanding at around 13 hours of light use.

Naturally, there are some downsides to a budget-friendly laptop like this one. The keyboard feels spacious but mushy, and the touchpad is small and not always responsive. The webcam is surprisingly good, though, especially for a cheap Chromebook. Port selection is decent; you get two USB-As, a USB-C, and an HDMI port. The USB-C supports charging and video output. There's no fingerprint sensor or facial recognition camera, which is unfortunate but expected for such an inexpensive device.

Best 2-In-1 Tablet For Writers

The best 2-in-1 tablet for writers we've tested is the Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition (2024), a premium Windows tablet PC with a kickstand and detachable keyboard. This form factor makes the Surface Pro incredibly versatile. You can use it as a traditional laptop or as a tablet, and you can also draw and take handwritten notes. It works with Microsoft's Surface Slim Pen 2, a stylus specifically designed for the new Surface Pro, and there's a slot on the type cover keyboard to store and wirelessly charge the pen. The stylus and type cover keyboard are separate purchases, though, so you'll have to factor them into the overall cost of the device. It has an excellent 1440p webcam for video calls and a facial recognition IR camera to log in quickly.

As for the user experience, it's available with very sharp 3:2 OLED or IPS displays. They get bright enough to combat glare and have a 120Hz refresh rate to make pen input feel more responsive. Unfortunately, the OLED display exhibits a screen door effect caused by its digitizer, which might bother some people. The keyboard feels spacious and tactile; however, typing with the device on your lap can be challenging because all the weight is in the display, and the type cover keyboard isn't super stable. Also, the kickstand can dig into your legs if you wear shorts. The battery lasts over 11 hours of light use, which is fantastic, especially for a tablet PC. Finally, this laptop uses the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite ARM-based SoCs. As many programs lack support for Windows on ARM, you must ensure that the apps you use have a native ARM version or can run properly through Microsoft's Prism emulation layer. 

• ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED (2024): If you want a more traditional clamshell design, the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) is a good alternative to the HP Spectre x360 14 (2024). It comes with a similar (although slightly dimmer) 2.8K OLED screen and an HDMI 2.0 port. • Lenovo Yoga 6 13 (2023): For folks who don't want to carry around a 16-inch laptop, consider the Lenovo Yoga 6 13 (2023) as a more compact alternative to the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 (2023). It feels very well-built compared to other models in its class, and it provides a good user experience overall, but it's more expensive and on the higher side of what we consider budget. If you're looking for a cheap laptop for writing, a Chromebook is the way to go. At around $200, it costs less than Windows laptops, and much less than the MacBook Air below, but offer great battery life since they require little power. Just bear in mind that Chromebooks take their name from the fact that they run Chrome OS, not Windows, so you can't use every Windows app you might be used to. 

That isn't a problem for writing since there are word processors available for Chrome OS, including both Microsoft Word and Google Docs. This Chromebook also has very little internal storage, so you'll be saving work to the cloud. Unlike in the past, you no longer need to be connected to the internet to use a Chromebook though, so you can work pretty much wherever you want.

Some Chromebooks feel a little too small to be comfortable as laptops for writers but when we reviewed it, we found the 14-inch Chromebook 314 to be a nice size, and the keyboard is well laid out and comfortable to use. We found the screen to be good for writing too, with an anti-glare, matte finish. All in all, this is a solid top choice as the best laptop for writers on a budget, just be sure to option the 1080p screen; the standard lower resolution display isn't great. 02. MacBook Air M2 (15-inch, 2023)

If all you want to do is write on your laptop, it doesn't need to be a particularly powerful one. However, you may want to do other things that are more processor-intensive, whether that's watching films, editing photos, or playing games. That's why I've chosen the MacBook Air (not Pro) with M2 chip as the overall top laptops for writers. Yes, the M3 version of the Air is out, but that's waaaay too much if what you want is mainly to write. It's offers too much features, at too big a price. I think the M2 hits the sweet spot. 

With the ultra-fast M2 chip and a bigger, beautiful display, it could be the perfect option for running creative software. When we reviewed it, it coped brilliantly on everything from day-to-day tasks like browsing the web and writing up documents to editing 4K video and using Photoshop ’s AI tools. Battery life was great too, lasting an entire day, even when performing creative tasks. Apple claims up to up to 18 hours Apple TV app movie playback, which is just one hour more than our testers squeezed out of the device in our looping movie test.

The 1080p FaceTime HD webcam is also great for writers who need to make a lot of video calls (these days that’s most of us), and you also get a fantastic Retina display which, in combination with MacOS , makes for just about the crispest, cleanest font rendering that we have witnessed on a laptop. If you're writing for long periods of time, that's going to make it more comfortable on the eyes than a lesser display.

Overall, then, this is overkill if all you're going to do is writing. But if your writing workflow also requires a lot of web research and watching videos, or if you also want a laptop for other things like creative work or gaming, then you'll certainly see the difference for the extra spend. If you want to treat yourself to a truly premium Windows laptop for writing, then the Surface Laptop Studio 2 fits the bill. Newly updated from the the original Surface Laptop Studio with 13th Gen Intel CPUs, it offers a lot more power than you need for word processing – and costs a lot more than you really need to pay for a laptop for writing – but our reviewer found the keyboard to be a real pleasure to write on. On top of that, the touch screen is gorgeous, and has stylus support, which could come in handy for note-taking if you're inclined.

This is a 2-in-1 device, which means it also converts into a tablet format, which we found could be useful for reading over and correcting writing when on the move, even on the train. 04. Acer Aspire 5

If you're waiting for that first novel advance before splashing too much cash, there are plenty of mid-range Windows laptops for writers. Our reviewer found this to be  a solid and dependable device for those who don't want to spend a fortune. With a plastic body, it doesn't exactly have a premium feel but it's solid enough to carry around.

It also performs well considering the price, especially if you're going to be sticking to word processing tools. We found that the keys don't have the most travel, but the keyboard is well laid out for writing on. Overall, the Aspire 5 is a great affordable laptop for writers on a budget but feel that a Chromebook like number 2 on our list would be too restrictive. The best 3:2 laptop for writers

05. Huawei MateBook X Pro

Most laptops have a traditional widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9. That's great for watching movies, but not necessarily the most convenient format for writing, which often requires scrolling up and down on vertically oriented documents. An aspect ratio of 3:2 gives you more vertical space, allowing you to see more text on the screen at once. And it also works better for graphic-design work, so is the perfect ratio if you're a writer who also likes to or needs to work on more demanding visual software.

An optional detachable keyboard turns this tablet into a compact little laptop that we found very convenient to carry around. And as it's an Android rather than Microsoft Windows device, it's much cheaper than most laptops.

It also boasts a huge 10,200mAh battery that easily lasted all day with heavy use and multiple days with lighter use when we tried it. So you could comfortably take this away with you and write somewhere remote for a couple of days, and still have battery life left.

There are some downsides though. The keyboard is small and not as comfortable as other laptops in this list. We'd suggest using the Lenovo Tab P12 as option for quickly jotting down notes, rather than typing up pages and pages of text in one go. But, with the portability and long battery life, the Lenovo Tab P12 lets you note down your thoughts whenever inspiration strikes.

How to choose the best laptop for writing

We've whittled the options above down to the six best laptops for writing available right now, but the right one for you will depend on your budget and needs. Setting a budget is important in light of the increased cost of living, so we’ve included laptops at a variety of price points to cover all bases to help you choose the right model for you.

Sure the Apple MacBook Air (M2) is a wonderful laptop that is more than capable than offering the best writing experience around. But the far more reasonably-priced Acer Aspire 5 or Chromebook 315 might give you everything you need. Thinking about which value-adding features you’ll actually use is key, too. For example, a touch screen is nice to have, but if you’re unlikely to make use of it, it’s not worth the extra investment.

What makes a good laptop for writing?

As we mentioned in our introduction, some of the key factors in choosing the best laptop for writers include comfortable screens and keyboards, battery life and portability. If you can find a laptop that delivers in these areas, you’re on to a winner. There are some other nice to have features to look out for, too. For example, anti-glare screens if you work outside often. You might also value having a touch screen or writing pad if you’re an avid note-taker.

Historically, storage has also been a consideration, but with the rise of cloud storage, many writers only worry about this if they don’t have regular WiFi access. Plus, USB storage is a perfectly viable option.

Should I get a MacBook or a Windows laptop?

Ultimately, this is a question of preference, but there are a few differences between MacBooks and Windows laptops for writers. While many writers have more experience with Microsoft Word, the software will set you back financially whereas the slightly less sophisticated Pages on Mac comes free. It is modestly accurate on picking up the correct source details, but I usually need to edit at least one citation detail after entering the source's link (translation: the details that the citation generator picks up is not 100% accurate). I always proof-read and revise the citation details, as needed, before using one of Scribbr's auto-generated citations. Regardless, once details are correct, Scribbr's tool is an excellent way to form correct citations and references. It is a great resource, there are some occasional glitches in formatting the compiled data appropriately, but overall, it's a fantastic product! The Apple MacBook Air M3 is one of our best overall laptops , and we cannot recommend it enough. It provides performance, portability, and long battery life, with a satisfying keyboard and stunning 13.6-inch display.

On the Laptop Mag battery test , which involves continuous web surfing over wifi at 150 nits, The MacBook Air M3 lasted 15 hours and 13 minutes, far longer than a standard workday. Longevity is one of the top priorities when determining what makes the best laptop for writers. 

It needs to be able to sustain you on the go, and no matter if you're working longer hours than expected and don't have an outlet nearby, the relief you'll feel from knowing your laptop can last more than 15 hours is unbeatable. MacBooks are perfect for this, and the company has only gotten better, with the M3 lasting a whole hour longer than the M2. 

MacBooks are notorious for their great-feeling keyboards, and if you want a springy and quiet one to keep your fingers happy while typing the day away, look no further. This is all alongside your documents looking fantastic on the 13.6-inch Retina display.

As for performance, the MacBook Air M3 decimated the premium laptop average with its Geekbench 6 overall multi-core score of 12,087 and still holds its own today. It also boasts staggering SSD speeds, managing 3,031 megabytes per second in our file transfer test. It even has spatial audio capabilities and a smooth trackpad. Plain and simple, all of these features make it a great overall pick for writers.

Best budget laptop for writers

2. acer chromebook plus 515.

While premium features are excellent, all you need to write is a great keyboard and enough processing power to run some of the best writing tools comfortably. It's safe to say that most people looking for a good laptop for writers want something that lets them get their work done without spending much money, especially if you're in college and don't have the cash for the other choices on this list. 

Thankfully, you can get all you need and more without demolishing your wallet. The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is just $399, making it one of the most affordable laptops for writers. But don't let the Chromebook Plus 515's low price fool you. 

This budget-friendly laptop delivers great value and more than enough performance to meet a writer's demands. The display is bright, clear, and vivid, and there are plenty of ports for a mouse or an external hard drive. The top-firing speakers are also perfect for writers who need background noise to get in the zone.

It's also not much of a surprise that it has a lightweight Intel Core i3-1215U processor. While this is a couple of generations old, it's fitting that on the Geekbench 6 overall performance test, it managed a multi-score of 5,052. This is below the 5,246 Chromebook average, but it's hard to argue with its price point.

The chiclet keyboard might not be fancy, but it delivers an excellent typing experience. The keys are snappy and responsive with white backlighting and comfy but clear lowercase white legends. Overall, it's hard to go wrong with the Chromebook Plus 515. The only downside is its battery life, which could have been higher but lasted over eight hours in our tests.

Best keyboard for writers

3. lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon (11th generation).

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s secret ingredient is its keyboard, which has remained unchanged for years because the snappy, tactile key switches are a signature of the X1 Carbon line. The X1 Carbon Gen 11 also boasts an impressive battery life of 13 hours and 45 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test.

On the Geekbench 5.5 overall performance test, its multi-core score of 8,628 is solid and beats the premium laptop average of 7,768. It also benefits from an incredible SSD transfer rate, which can be excellent for moving files around. It duplicated 25GB of multimedia files in 16 seconds at 1,704 megabytes per second, far above the average of 1,382MBps.

However, its long battery life and solid performance make it no surprise that it makes sacrifices in some avenues. Its 69 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut is significantly below the 94 percent category average, and if you're a stickler about color depth, you won't be satisfied watching movies on it. It's also relatively dim at 327 nits of brightness, again falling behind the average of 391 nits. You'll have to give up color and luminescence for its incredible battery life.

Like most ThinkPads, the X1 Carbon can survive harsh conditions, as it’s been tested against 12 military-grade durability tests . Despite that rugged weight, it only weighs 2.5 pounds and is just 0.6 inches thick. So it's a good choice for writers on the go. Although the X1 Carbon Gen 11 starts at a premium price, it’s worth it for the keyboard alone. But it's not just the keyboard; add the lightweight but durable design, solid performance, decent battery life, and the X1 Carbon feels like a value.

Best 2-in-1 laptop for writers

4. lenovo yoga 9i (gen 8).

Lenovo's Yoga 9i Gen 8 is a serious improvement over the previous generation. It has a gorgeous OLED display, excellent performance, and decent battery life, making it a great option for writers who want a 2-in-1 platform. 

While it isn't our first pick as the best laptop for writers, it is important to remember that it is personally my favorite laptop. With its clicky keyboard, sturdy chassis, and awesome display, I have loved using it to write. In fact, it is our best 2-in-1 laptop . 

It also has a solid longevity of 10 hours and 10 minutes, and while that's pretty good, it's nowhere near some of the other laptops on this list (with the MacBook Air M3 going above 15 hours).

We normally advise writers searching for laptops to focus less on-screen color. Still, if you want the best of both worlds, its OLED display channels a mouthwatering 142.1 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, absolutely demolishing its competition in panel vividness. While its 353 nits of brightness aren't quite as high as some might like, it's still bright enough to take on the go without issue.

It's also especially important that 2-in-1 laptops are sturdy, as feeling like they might snap from the slightest movement can give you an anxiety attack. Luckily, the Yoga 9i's aluminum chassis is so rigid (in a good way) that I'm never worried when placing it in diverse positions.

Our only complaint about this 2-in-1 is that the display could be a bit brighter, but it's easily one of the best laptops out there for writers who need a 2-in-1 that can keep up with all of their daily needs.

Best high-end laptop for writers

5. samsung galaxy book 3 ultra.

Samsung 's super-charged Galaxy Book 3 Ultra comes with an Intel 13th Gen H-Series CPU  and an  Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 GPU while keeping the laptop below 4 pounds. This portable powerhouse is the thinnest and lightest RTX 40-series laptop we've reviewed so far, which does mean it has a bit less battery life than some of its competitors on this list.

The Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra averaged 9 hours and 3 minutes on the Laptop Mag web surfing battery test. But it will absolutely crush any task you can set before it in that time, though heavy GPU use will mean even less battery life. So if you need to travel or work long hours, this may not be the best laptop for your workflow.

On the Geekbench 5.5 overall performance test, its Intel Core i7-13700H processor achieved a multi-core score of 12,212. This is quite a bit better than the premium laptop average of 10,621, and frankly, it's on par with some of the best scores you can get from 13th-generation Intel processors. You won't have to worry about productivity speeds with this beast.

And, of course, as this is built with an RTX 4050 graphics card, you can expect decent budget gaming performance. On the Assassin's Creed Valhalla test at 1080p, it managed 54 frames per second at the highest graphics. If you mostly stick to indie titles or older games, this GPU has you covered. New games won't run perfectly, and you might have to make sacrifices for high performance, but it should still be able to handle it.

The only other problem with the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra is its starting price. At $2,199, this lightweight, high-performance laptop can easily break the bank. However, for writers, this beast boasts enough power and portability to be a great pick for those who can afford it.

Best gaming laptop for writers

6. lenovo legion 5 pro.

The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is not only one of our favorite budget gaming laptops , but it is also perfect for writers. It boasts superb RTX 4070 performance that outperforms its many competitors without a sweat, alongside excellent productivity scores to satisfy your needs in everyday tasks.

Of course, a vital aspect of any laptop for writers is the keyboard, and you will not be disappointed by the Legion 5 Pro, as it boasts my favorite keyboard ever. In fact, I wrote a piece describing it as my keyboard soulmate . Between the touchpad, the arrow key nook, and only 1.5mm of key travel, it stands out and excels as one of the best for quickly getting work done without feeling slowed down by awful design.

And if you want something great at gaming and writing, this hits a perfect balance. Its RTX 4070 graphics card performed the best when compared to RTX 4070 GPUs on competitors. It managed 110 frames per second in Borderlands 3 when compared to the  Razer  Blade 14 (98 fps), Origin EON16-S (106 fps), and  MSI  Katana 15 (99 fps). It also beat these laptops in Red Dead Redemption 2, Metro Exodus, Dirt 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Grand Theft Auto V. It was defeated once by the EON16-S in Far Cry 6.

While the Legion 5 Pro doesn't have the best display, it is surprisingly high quality for a laptop at this price point. It also has a remarkably powerful audio system. With an AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, this laptop also has excellent non-gaming performance. It achieved a Geekbench 6 score of 13,063, took only 4 minutes and 5 seconds to convert a  4K  video into 1080p resolution through the HandBrake app, and has 2,150 megabytes per second transfer rate. Its performance is unbelievable.

How to Choose the best Laptops for writers

Do your intensive daily workloads require more RAM than the average Joe? Are you a video editor who needs extra storage? Are you a power user who wants a beefy GPU? Sorting through the best laptops to fit your lifestyle is a tricky business.

Budget: What you get for your money

You can find decent Windows laptops and high-quality  Chromebooks  for  under $500 . However, better mainstream laptops usually cost more than $700, and premium  Ultrabooks  can run for over $1,000. The  best gaming laptops  can cost $2.000 and up, but you can play the latest titles at decent frame rates on  gaming laptops under $1,000 .

Screen Size: 12 to 14 inches for portability

Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to use your computer on your lap or carry it around a lot, go for one with a 12, 13, or 14-inch display. If you want to use the computer on tables and desks and won't carry it around much, a 15-inch model may give you more value. Some gaming rigs, media machines, and workstations even have 17- or 18-inch screens, but those are the hardest to carry.

Design: 2-in-1 or Clamshell?

More and more of today's laptops are  2-in-1s  with screens that either bend back 360 degrees or detach so you can use them as tablets. If you like the idea of using your laptop in slate mode for drawing, media consumption, or just standing up, a  2-in-1 could be for you . However, you can often get better features or a lower price with a traditional clamshell-style laptop.

Battery Life: 9+ Hours for Portability

Battery life matters unless you plan to use your laptop only on your desk. Even in the home or office, having plenty of juice enables you to work on the couch or at the conference table without being chained to the nearest outlet. We recommend getting a laptop that lasted over 9 hours on the Laptop Mag Battery Test for the best portability. The  longest-lasting laptops  endure for up to 15 hours.

How We Test the best laptops for Writers

We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing—both synthetic and real-world—before we send it to our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers, and heat management.

In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the laptop's display's brightness and sRGB color gamut. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 5.5, 6.1/6.2, and 3DMark professional graphics tests. 

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and duplicate a 4.97GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is Cid Meier's Civilization V: Gathering Storm benchmark at 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over wifi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 11 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result, whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered longer than five hours deserve praise.

You may already use Microsoft Word to write papers, but you can also use for many other tasks, such as collecting research, co-writing with other students, recording notes on-the-fly, and even building a better bibliography!

Getting started

Let’s get started by opening Microsoft Word and choosing a template to create a new document. You can either:

Select Blank document to create a document from scratch.

Select a structured template.

Select Take a tour for Word tips.

Next, let’s look at creating and formatting copy. You can do so by clicking onto the page and beginning to type your content. The status bar at the bottom of the document shows your current page number and how many words you've typed, in case you’re trying to stay maintain a specific word count.

To format text and change how it looks, select the text and select an option on the Home tab: Bold, Italic, Bullets, Numbering , etc.

To add pictures, shapes, or other media, simply navigate to the Insert tab, then select any of the options to add media to your document.

Word automatically saves your content as you work, so you don’t have to stress about losing your progress if you forget to press  Save .

Here are some of the advanced tools you can try out while using Microsoft Word.

Type with your voice

Have you ever wanted to speak, not write, your ideas? Believe it or not, there’s a button for that! All you have to do is navigate to the Home tab, select the Dictate button, and start talking to “type” with your voice. You’ll know Dictate is listening when the red recording icon appears.

Tips for using Dictate

Speak clearly and conversationally.

Add punctuation by pausing or saying the name of the punctuation mark.

If you make a mistake, all you have to do is go back and re-type your text.

Finding and citing sources

Get a head start on collecting sources and ideas for a big paper by searching key words in  Researcher in the References tab of your document.

Researcher uses Bing to search the web and deliver high-quality research sources to the side of your page. Search for people, places, or ideas and then sort by journal articles and websites. Add a source to your page by selecting the plus sign.

As you write, Researcher saves a record of your searches. Just select My Research to see the complete list.

Keep track of all your sources by using Word's built-in bibliography maker. Simply navigate to the References tab.

First, choose the style you want your citations to be in. In this example, we’ve selected APA style.

Select Insert Citation and Add New Source .

In the next window, choose what kind of work you’re citing—an article, book, etc.—and fill in the required details. Then select  OK to cite your source.

Keep writing. At the ends of sentences that need sources, select Insert Citation to keep adding new sources, or pick one you already entered from the list.

As you write, Word will keep track of all the citations you’ve entered. When you’re finished, select Bibliography and choose a format style. Your bibliography will appear at the end of your paper, just like that.

Make things look nice

Make your report or project look extra professional in the Design tab! Browse different themes, colors, fonts, and borders to create work you're proud of!

Illustrate a concept with a chart or a model by navigating to the  Insert tab and choosing  SmartArt . In this example, we chose Cycle and filled in text from the writing process to make a simple graphic. Choose other graphic types to represent hierarchies, flow charts, and more.

To insert a 3D model, select  Insert > 3D Models to choose from a library of illustrated dioramas from different course subjects and 3D shapes.

Invite someone to write with you

If you’re working on a group project, you can work on a document at the same time without emailing the file back and forth. Select Share at the top of your page and create a link you can send to other students.

Now, everybody can open the same file and work together.

Intel reveals first Lunar Lake laptop CPUs: everything you need to know

Here’s your decoder ring for core ultra 200v..

Do good things come to laptop buyers who wait? Today, Intel is revealing its first nine answers to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and AMD’s Strix Point laptop chips — and the company claims the new Core Ultra 200V lineup, formerly known as Lunar Lake , can meet or beat them in almost every way.

When the first wave of laptops ship on September 24th, they’ll have “the fastest CPU core,” “the world’s best built-in GPU,” and “the best AI performance,” according to Intel. Where Qualcomm versus AMD was a question of battery life versus graphical performance, Intel claims its new chips do it all.

For example, Dell is just now announcing a new version of its flagship $1,400 XPS 13 laptop with Lunar Lake that’s basically identical to the current model in every other way: same chassis, same dimensions, same screen, same 55 watt-hour battery pack. And yet, Dell says it now gets up to 26 hours of 1080p Netflix streaming at 150 nits of brightness, up from 18 hours previously.

That’s a 44 percent improvement, which is a giant leap for Intel, if true. (Never mind that the Qualcomm version of the XPS 13 quotes a slightly longer life of up to 27 hours.)

Another example: Intel says an Asus Zenbook S 14 with Intel can last multiple hours longer than an Asus Zenbook S 16 with AMD in office tasks, despite the AMD laptop’s slightly larger 78Wh battery pack:

And on gaming, Intel claims it’s finally pulling ahead of AMD and absolutely clobbering Qualcomm, with its Core Ultra 9 288V boasting 68 percent better frame rates on average than the top-shelf Qualcomm X1E-84-100 in a Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge and 16 percent better frame rates than the AMD HX 370 chip in the Asus Zenbook S 16.

You’ll want to zoom in on these slides to see how Intel claims your fave games might run at 1080p medium:

And that’s without using Intel’s XeSS upscaling. With it, the company claims even ray-traced games are within reach of its integrated GPU, such as 45fps in Cyberpunk 2077 , 57fps in Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, and 66fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider . (Intel didn’t provide resolution and graphical settings for the ray-traced claims, though.)

On AI, Intel claims its new machines offer far faster performance than Qualcomm when using Adobe Premiere and Lightroom features, among other apps:

Like we’ve discussed previously , these Lunar Lake laptops should have excellent baked-in connectivity: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and a minimum of two Thunderbolt 4 ports to guarantee speedy USB-C connectivity, charging, and up to three 4K monitors.

But before you run out and preorder a Lunar Lake laptop, there are a couple other things you should know.

Lunar Lake is just for thin laptops with 32GB or less RAM

Intel’s marketing hides it well, but Lunar Lake isn’t the most powerful laptop processor out there. It’s not even Intel’s most powerful.

Every one of Intel’s nine Core Ultra 200V chips has just eight CPU cores, eight CPU threads, a maximum of eight GPU cores, and up to 32GB of RAM, with no way to add more in the future. One of Intel’s key efficiency improvements was getting rid of separate memory sticks or chips, baking it into the CPU package instead. Intel also did away with hyperthreading, the technique that let CPU cores run more than one thread.

And while Intel says its eight-thread Lunar Lake chips can beat a 14-thread or 22-thread Meteor Lake chip at lower wattage, last-gen Intel chips can actually pull ahead when given more power — as does AMD’s HX 370. Here’s the slide that shows that:

Want more cores, more threads, and more RAM in an Intel laptop? That’s what Intel’s Arrow Lake is for, and it may be coming as soon as October 10th .

You may not need — or want — the most powerful Lunar Lake chip

Remember when Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 meant different numbers of CPU cores and threads? Lunar Lake throws that out the window; it’s got fewer dividing lines than ever.

Here’s the easiest Intel decoder ring I’ve ever written, at least until Arrow Lake arrives:

As you can see below, your typical processor name will be something like “ Core Ultra 7 258V .”

• Every chip has four performance cores, four low-power cores, and at least seven GPU cores and five neural compute (AI) engines. Most chips have a default 17W TDP.
• Ultra 7 means it has eight GPU cores instead of seven, six neural compute engines instead of five, and 12MB of cache instead of 8MB.
• Ultra 9 additionally has a minimum wattage of 17W and a default wattage of 30W, a lot more than every other chip in the lineup!
• The first processor digit is always 2 , and that just means these are Intel’s second-gen Core Ultra chips. If Arrow Lake also begins with 2, as rumored, this may not be particularly helpful.
• The second digit goes up based on processor speed. “ 2 ” chips currently turbo up to a maximum of 4.5GHz on the CPU and 1.85GHz on the GPU, with larger numbers bumping those up in 200MHz or 100MHz or sometimes just 50MHz increments.
• The third digit is RAM. “ 6 ” means 16GB of memory, while “ 8 ” means 32GB.
• The V means Lunar Lake, Intel’s Robert Hallock tells PCWorld , with S , U, and H parts coming later on different architectures.

As you can see, only 300MHz of turbo clock and 100MHz of GPU max frequency separate Intel’s flagship Ultra 9 288V from its lesser Ultra 7 258V — but the wattage boost might matter a lot more than MHz for performance. Can’t yet say!

Wait for the reviews

Intel has made some big claims that need to be tested in the coming weeks, as laptops like the Dell XPS 13 and Asus Zenbook S 14 make their way into reviewers’ hands — and when we tested Qualcomm’s and AMD’s big claims earlier this year, not all was what it appeared.

The Asus Zenbook S 16 with AMD Strix Point was an excellent laptop but also an AI no-show, and one that didn’t meet AMD’s bold claims of beating Apple . And while Qualcomm wowed on battery, we quickly found it wasn’t ready for gaming . Speaking of, can Intel’s laptops game like it says while unplugged from the wall? I would hope so based on this earlier demo and their quoted power efficiency, but Intel hasn’t told me so.

You should expect to see a lot of Intel Lunar Lake laptops get announced real soon — Intel confirms that Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, and Samsung are all among the manufacturers building 80 different laptops around the Core Ultra 200V chips launching this week, and many will open preorders immediately.

Some provide enough room to use a mouse or offer storage for your phone, tablet or pen. And because laptops heat up over time, lap desks are also a great protective barrier for your legs.

The Home Office Pro Lap Desk from Lap Gear can easily accommodate a 13-inch laptop with some room to spare. We like that it includes a mouse pad, wrist pad and a phone holder for ergonomic comfort (though we did note that the phone slot is shallow, so your phone can slip out if you move too much).

It sat comfortably in our tester's lap, thanks to two pads on the bottom. He enjoyed this design more than a full pillow bottom because his legs weren't completely covered, and it gave him space to move around.

It comes in eight different color variations so you can match your aesthetic. A built-in handle allows you to easily carry the desk wherever you want to work. The brand also offers a version without a wrist pad for a slightly lower price.

Lap Gear's Designer Lap Desk is not only chic, it's also very comfortable and affordable. The bottom is a full pillow, and some of our testers preferred this soft design. The pillow has microbead filling, so it’s easy to fluff and make more comfortable in certain areas of your lap if necessary.

The desk itself has multiple features to make it more functional: There’s a ledge for your laptop or book to rest against, an elastic band to hold papers in place and a slot for a phone or small tablet .

Our 13-inch laptop fit perfectly; the brand claims the desk works for up to a 15-inch laptop, and we did note extra space. Unfortunately, there is not enough room for a mouse.

The pillow includes a handle, and the whole thing weighs only about 2 pounds, so you can carry it around quite easily. One takeaway if you plan to use the desk for computer work rather than writing or reading: Your phone will be hidden behind the laptop, so it makes it a bit harder to access.

Our experts love that this pick is not a typical lap desk: The pillow is detachable, so you can use the lap desk with the soft cushion for working or remove it to convert the surface to a breakfast tray . While it does look like a breakfast tray more than it does a lap desk, it's open on one side to allow easier access for working.

The pillow is comfortable thanks to its microbead filling, which allows you to adjust parts of the pillow to make it more comfortable on your lap, and its detachability means it's easier to clean. The overall size was perfect for our 13-inch laptop, and the brand claims it can fit up to a 15-inch model.

Our tester found it was heavier than other lap desks they had used, but reported that not uncomfortable thanks to the handles on either side. They also liked that the dual handles mean you can carry the lap desk with things on it, unlike a typical lap desk with just one handle.

Rossie Home Premium Real Acacia Wood Lap Desk

Looking for a real wood desk instead of plastic? Try this acacia desk from Rossie Home. We weighed it against the same style made from plastic, and it is two pounds heavier. That might not seem like a lot, but it can add up when sitting in your lap for a long period of time. The surface is quite spacious, with a width of around 21 inches. It fit our 13-inch test laptop just fine, with space for a larger laptop if needed.

The built-in mousepad makes it easier to work, and the corner strap allows you to hold any loose papers or notes. There's also a built-in phone slot and a wrist support, which we found comfortable for typing.

The desk itself comes in three different color variations: Natural Acacia, Ash and Java. The pillow includes a handle that makes it easy to transport the desk.

Couchmaster Couchmaster Cybot

This lap desk is heavy duty. The desk surface sits above your legs, and the whole thing lays across two couch armrests (hence the name Couchmaster!). We haven't yet tested it, but we like the thoughtful features for gaming: It states that it can fit a 17-inch laptop, and it has built-in vents to help keep your laptop cool through long gaming sessions.

It also includes a mousepad, so you don’t have to use the laptop's trackpad to game. The tablet/phone holder above the mousepad is handy as well.

This lap desk comes with several side pockets, allowing you to place remotes, controllers and other gaming accessories. We like that the desk itself is adjustable, so you can place it closer or farther along the cushions to find the most comfort.

The size of this lap desk does make it more complicated to store out of the way. And the brand states that it weighs around 10 pounds, which is significantly higher than most lap desks, which tend to be around two to three pounds.

Is it worth it to buy a lap desk?

Not everyone wants to sit at a desk all day. Maybe you work better on your couch with a little background noise (hint: your TV), or maybe you just love spending time in your bed. A lap desk allows you to do work in these spots, without needing a proper desk to sit at.

Some lap desks can can elevate and angle your laptop, so that you’re not leaning forward to look at your laptop while it is on your lap. Your laptop also needs proper airflow to prevent it from getting too hot (a common occurrence when you just use your laptop in just your lap).

While we mainly talk about using these lap desks while working, they're also great for browsing the web while watching TV, or even gaming with friends. These desks could even just be used as a proper desk without a laptop, say if you are an artist or just love taking notes by hand.

Are lap desks better than normal desks?

Lap desks aren’t better or worse than normal desks. Their value depends on the type of worker you are. If you work with multiple monitors or prefer an ergonomic chair for comfort, you’ll likely want to sit at a proper desk. If you need or prefer to work from multiple locations or like the more hands-on positioning of lap work, you may want to try a lap desk.

What should you consider before buying a lap desk?

✔️ Size: If you plan to use the lap desk with a laptop, you should make sure that the computer will fit. If you plan to use it for writing or drawing, make sure that your hand can rest comfortably on the desk. Note that larger lap desks can be heavier and may be harder to store when not in use.

✔️ Comfort: If you don’t enjoy working from your lap, consider a model that has legs. These versions sit above your lap, not on it. If you don’t mind working with something in your lap, look for a cushioned pick. Lap desks that have pillows or bolsters on the bottom provide a soft feeling and can conform to your legs while you work. And because cushioned models sit directly on your lap, you can not only use them on a couch or a bed but also in a narrow chair.

✔️ Extra features: Some lap desks are simply a work surface, while others have electronic ports and chargers, drawers, even adjustable sections to make it easier for you to type and use your computer while working. We also appreciate ergonomic features like wrist pads, mouse pads and phone holders that make working for a long period more comfortable.

After researching countless lap desks, we settled on 10 popular models to evaluate in our Media and Tech Lab. We used them throughout the workday, noting any discomfort in our laps. We factored in the weight and any convenient features.

We used a 13-inch laptop as a baseline, and we employed a mouse where possible. We also considered retail reviews and discussions on online forums.

Valley students share their future goals as education essay competition kicks off

PHOENIX — September marks the beginning of college savings month in Arizona. Arizona’s state treasurer Kimberly Yee is kicking it off with an essay competition asking students to write about their dream jobs.

Twenty winners from all across Arizona will get $529 for their AZ529 account.

At the Boys and Girls Club of the Valley, there are a lot of kids with big dreams.

“I want to be a volleyball coach and a teacher of either math or ELA," sixth grader Bellamar Scott-Ramos said.

“I want to be a soccer player and a lawyer. Because I’m good at arguing," Charles Strand-Flores said.

To achieve those goals, these fifth and sixth graders want to pursue a college degree.

Treasurer Yee is telling them about the essay contest they can submit to so they can get a jump start.

“It’s a very short paragraph you need to write about what you want to be when you grow up," Yee said. "That will give you a chance to submit it and give you a chance to win $529 for your future education.”

Yee is trying to reach as many kids and parents as possible, heading across the state again to promote the contest and the savings plan.

“We have seen so much growth in this program. In just 46 months, we have seen 44,500 new families sign up for an education savings plan," Yee said.

Strand-Flores says he plans to take what he learned today and start saving.

“If you save, you have it when you need it. And when you have a lot, you can give it to other people.”

Yee adds if your child eventually decides college isn’t for them, the saved money can be spent on other types of education like vocational schools, trade programs, and workforce development.
