The 4 types of speeches in public speaking

Informative, demonstrative, persuasive and special occasion.

There are four main types of speeches or types of public speaking.

  • Demonstrative
  • Special occasion or Entertaining

To harness their power a speaker needs to be proficient in all of them: to understand which speech type to use when, and how to use it for maximum effectiveness.

Informative speeches

An informative speech does as its name suggests: informs. It provides information about a topic. The topic could be a place, a person, an animal, a plant, an object, an event, or a process.

The informative speech is primarily explanatory and educational.

Its purpose is not to persuade or influence opinion one way or the other. It is to provide sufficient relevant material, (with references to verifiable facts, accounts, studies and/or statistics), for the audience to have learned something. 

What they think, feel, or do about the information after they've learned it, is up to them.

This type of speech is frequently used for giving reports, lectures and, sometimes for training purposes. 

Examples of informative speech topics:

  • the number, price and type of dwellings that have sold in a particular suburb over the last 3 months
  • the history of the tooth brush
  • how trees improves air quality in urban areas
  • a brief biography of Bob Dylan
  • the main characteristics of Maine Coon cats
  • the 1945 US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  • the number of, and the work of local philanthropic institutions
  • the weather over the summer months
  • the history of companion planting 
  • how to set up a new password
  • how to work a washing machine

Demonstration, demonstrative or 'how to' speeches

A demonstration speech is an extension of an informative process speech. It's a 'how to' speech, combining informing with demonstrating.

The topic process, (what the speech is about), could either be demonstrated live or shown using visual aids.

The goal of a demonstrative speech is to teach a complete process step by step.

It's found everywhere, all over the world: in corporate and vocational training rooms, school classrooms, university lecture theatres, homes, cafes... anywhere where people are either refreshing or updating their skills. Or learning new ones.

Knowing to how give a good demonstration or 'how to' speech is a very valuable skill to have, one appreciated by everybody.

Examples of 'how to' speech topics are:

  • how to braid long hair
  • how to change a car tire
  • how to fold table napkins
  • how to use the Heimlich maneuver
  • how to apply for a Federal grant
  • how to fill out a voting form
  • how to deal with customer complaints
  • how to close a sale
  • how to give medicine to your cat without being scratched to bits!

Persuasive speeches

The goal of a persuasive speech is to convince an audience to accept, or at the very least listen to and consider, the speaker's point of view.

To be successful the speaker must skillfully blend information about the topic, their opinion, reasons to support it and their desired course of action, with an understanding of how best to reach their audience.

Everyday examples of persuasive speeches

Common usages of persuasive speeches are:

  • what we say when being interviewed for a job
  • presenting a sales pitch to a customer
  • political speeches - politicians lobbying for votes,
  • values or issue driven speeches e.g., a call to boycott a product on particular grounds, a call to support varying human rights issues: the right to have an abortion, the right to vote, the right to breathe clean air, the right to have access to affordable housing and, so on.

Models of the persuasive process

The most frequently cited model we have for effective persuasion is thousands of years old.  Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, 384–322 BC , explained it as being supported by three pillars: ethos, pathos and logos.

Briefly, ethos is the reliability and credibility of the speaker. How qualified or experienced are they talk on the topic? Are they trustworthy? Should we believe them? Why?

Pathos is the passion, emotion or feeling you, the speaker, bring to the topic. It's the choice of language you use to trigger an emotional connection linking yourself, your topic and the audience together, in a way that supports your speech purpose.

(We see the echo of Pathos in words like empathy: the ability to understand and share the feels of another, or pathetic: to arouse feelings of pity through being vulnerable and sad.)

Logos is related to logic. Is the information we are being presented logical and rational? Is it verifiable? How is it supported? By studies, by articles, by endorsement from suitably qualified and recognized people?

Monroe's Motivated Sequence of persuasion

Another much more recent model is Monroe's Motivated Sequence based on the psychology of persuasion.

It consists of five consecutive steps: attention, need, satisfaction, visualization and action and was developed in the 1930s by American Alan H Monroe, a lecturer in communications at Purdue University. The pattern is used extensively in advertising, social welfare and health campaigns.

Special occasion or entertaining speeches

The range of these speeches is vast: from a call 'to say a few words' to delivering a lengthy formal address.

This is the territory where speeches to mark farewells, thanksgiving, awards, birthdays, Christmas, weddings, engagements and anniversaries dwell, along with welcome, introduction and thank you speeches, tributes, eulogies and commencement addresses. 

In short, any speech, either impromptu or painstakingly crafted, given to acknowledge a person, an achievement, or an event belongs here.

Speech types often overlap

Because speakers and their speeches are unique, (different content, purposes, and audiences...), the four types often overlap. While a speech is generally based on one principal type it might also have a few of the features belonging to any of the others. 

For example, a speech may be mainly informative but to add interest, the speaker has used elements like a demonstration of some sort, persuasive language and the brand of familiar humor common in a special occasion speech where everybody knows each other well.

The result is an informative 'plus' type of speech. A hybrid! It's a speech that could easily be given by a long serving in-house company trainer to introduce and explain a new work process to employees.

Oral Communication in Context Quarter 1 – Module 6: Types of Speeches

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the Nature of Communication. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module is about Types of Speech.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

  • distinguish types of speeches according to purpose;
  • use principles of effective speech delivery in different contexts;
  • differentiate the types of speech delivery;
  • identify the speech used in different situations;
  • write a sample speech according to purpose; and
  • apply learning and thinking skills, life skills, and ICT literacy in understanding the principles of speech delivery.

A speaker communicates for five reasons which is called Functions of Communication. But a speaker also creates a speech based on the purpose he or she wants to achieve. These purposes are called the Goals of Speech. It becomes obvious as the speaker shows through the speech what he/she wants to achieve. The speaker through the speech can make one think, change one’s mind, or smile or laugh.

What are The Different Types of Speeches in English?

Although there is a variety of speech types, we generally look at speeches in three different ways. 

  • Types of speeches according to the purpose
  • Types of speeches according to the delivery
  • Types of speeches for special occasion

Apart from the above types, there are some other types of speeches as well, which we will address later!

Now, let’s set sail for the types of speeches according to the purpose.

Types of Speeches According to the Purpose

Each and every speech has a specific purpose, i.e., some are delivered to entertain the audience, and others might be delivered to inform the audience. 

When a speaker delivers a speech, he has a clear purpose in his mind for why he wants to convey this message to the audience.

The principal purpose of delivering a speech falls into four basic categories:

Informative Speech

When a speaker tries to inform a particular group or audience about a particular subject, they’re delivering an informative speech. The sole aim of an informative speech is to educate the audience on a topic. 

The presenter may make use of facts and statistics to deliver an impactful informative speech. Such speeches deliver new information on a specific place, person, issue, or occasion by describing, explaining, and defining.

These are some common types of informative speeches:

  • Explanatory Speech : Delivered to clarify a complex topic, process, or concept by breaking it down into understandable elements, making it easier for the audience to grasp.
  • Descriptive Speech : It is a kind of informative speech that creates an accurate picture of a certain individual, place, or thing in the mind of the audience. 
  • Definition Speech : A definition speech provides clear explanations of terms, concepts, or ideas, allowing the audience to understand the meaning of the subject.

Possible scenarios of informative speeches could be:

  • A CEO’s reporting on the company's financial performance for the past month, highlighting revenue, expenses, and net profit.

Persuasive Speech

In a persuasive speech , the speaker aims to persuade the audience with their opinion. Using persuasive language, the orator tries to reinforce the listeners' perspectives, or feelings about a particular subject.

Including factual evidence is necessary in a persuasive speech. With concrete details, there is a higher chance of persuading the audience to agree with what you make claims about. 

This genre of speech is the hardest because it is difficult to convince people of anything. And it becomes more difficult if you ask them to challenge their current belief and think out of that perspective. 

Some common persuasive speech types are:

  • Policy Persuasion: Urges for specific actions or policies, aiming to influence the audience's decision-making.
  • Value Persuasion: Seeks to modify or fortify the audience's beliefs, values, or attitudes about a particular theme or topic.
  • Fact Persuasion: Focuses on presenting facts and evidence to persuade the audience to accept a certain point of view.

An example of a persuasive speech could be:

  • Encouraging the audience to vote in the upcoming election to have a say in shaping our community's future.

Entertaining Speech

Have you ever been to an employee’s promotional party or even a standup comedy session? If the speaker managed to entertain you or make you laugh, they delivered an entertaining speech!

In the most simple words, entertainment speeches are intended to entertain the audience. The basic purpose of such kinds of speeches is to provide pleasure and enjoyment that make the audience laugh. 

Although this speech is meant to make the audience laugh and enjoy the occasion, it should have a lighter moment as well. 

Here are some types of entertaining speeches:

  • Humorous Speech: Makes use of humor, jokes, and comedy to amuse and entertain the audience. 
  • Storytelling Speech: Aims to engage the listeners by sharing a relatable story to convey a message or illustrate a point. Quite often, the presenter uses vivid details and emotions. 
  • Roast or Toast: In such a speech, an individual is targeted and teased with the help of humor in a lighthearted way. In a toast, the speaker celebrates or honors someone’s success, typically on a positive note. 

Let’s see what an example of an entertaining speech could be:

  • A standup comedy session in your college, organized by some society members!

Demonstrative Speech

Also known as a how-to speech, a demonstrative speech is given to demonstrate the working of a particular thing. Typically, a demonstrative speech makes use of visual aids for a clear understanding. 

A little detail to notice is that you shouldn’t confuse a demonstrative speech with an informative speech. Although both types of speeches provide new information to the audience, demonstrative speeches demonstrate how to do or perform something. 

Here are some types of demonstrative speech:

  • Process Demonstrative Speech: Guides the audience through a series of steps or a sequence of actions to achieve a specific outcome or create something. 
  • Object Demonstrative Speech: Provides detailed information about a specific object, focusing on its characteristics, features, and uses. 
  • Activity Demonstrative Speech: Demonstrates how to perform a particular activity or task, offering practical instructions and insights to the audience.

Well, we just covered what are the types of speeches according to the purpose. Now we will jump to different speech types according to their delivery!

Types of Speeches According to the Delivery

The easiest way to start your speech is not always the best one. A substantial amount of work goes into the preparation of delivering a compelling message. So, when you are asked to deliver a speech, get familiar with the type of speech and your target audience.

Always think of the delivery method that is suitable for delivering a particular message. There are four ways that can help you understand how to balance the formality while delivering the speech.

1. Impromptu Speaking

Consider yourself in an urgent situation where you’re asked to deliver a brief presentation on your semester project updates. You’ve been urgently contacted by your supervisor, and you’ve not even prepared the presentation. 

Obviously, you will present your project without any preparation.

Well, that’s when you’ll deliver an impromptu speech without any prior planning. In short, an impromptu speech is the presentation of a brief and concise message without preparation.

2. Extemporaneous Speaking

Extemporaneous speaking is the opposite of impromptu speaking, as it’s planned, well-prepared, and rehearsed properly. It is a perfect balance as it allows the speaker to use notes and give time to prepare well to deliver the speech.

Extemporaneous speeches are not meant to be memorized, and as a result, the delivery is quite natural and follows a conversational style.

3. Manuscript Speaking

It is the word-for-word iteration of a written message. The speaker keeps his attention on the printed page while delivering a manuscript message. Such speeches work well where the exact repetition of original words is required, i.e., reading the organization’s mission statement. 

This is the easiest type of public speaking, but it is not as effective as others. The audience might lose their interest soon, as the speaker is just reading the manuscript.

4. Memorized Speaking

When a speaker has to deliver a speech relying on their memory, without the use of any notes, they’re delivering a memorized speech. The spokesperson must thoroughly research the speech until they can recite it from memory. 

Memorized speaking is performed in situations where precision, effective delivery, and a positive engagement with the audience are required. Most commonly, this speaking style is practiced in formal speeches, academic competitions, theatrical performances, etc.

5. Oratorical Speech

Oratorical speech is a subcategory of memorized speaking. Although oratorical literally means “ relating to the art of speech giving ”, oratorical speaking is a very specific type of speech. 

Such speeches are often quite long and formal. They’re typically known for their eloquence, use of persuasive and rhetorical style of delivery. To deliver an impactful speech, the speaker has to perform a high degree of practice and memorization.

Types of Speeches According to Special Occasion

Special occasion speeches are intended to entertain or commemorate the audience. They have no set format and are designed to fit the particular occasion. The special occasion could be a birthday party, a graduation ceremony, or someone’s funeral. 

Here are eight common types of special occasion speeches:

1. Introduction Speech

The introduction speeches are given to introduce the speaker who is going to give a speech. It is given to inspire or persuade the audience to listen to that speaker. It is generally small and brief speeches. 

2. Presentation Speech

These speeches are usually given at award ceremonies, where an individual presents an award or prize to a person.  The main purpose of the presentation speech is to provide recognition of the recipient’s accomplishments.

A toast is a brief tribute to a particular person or an event. The toasts are given on a special occasion to honor or acknowledge someone. It is given to express best wishes to someone for the future.  

A roast is a kind of toast where the speaker praises and humorously pokes the person being honored. It might be given to a person who has achieved noteworthy success or moving away. It contains administration, appreciation, comedic insult, or tribute to someone.

5. Acceptance

These types of speeches are given by the person who has just received a prize or an award. Acceptance speech allows the recipient to show humility and grace for the award and say a few words of appreciation.

6. Commemorative Speech

These types of speeches are given at conventions, conferences, or graduation ceremonies. The commemorative speech is the summary of the central message around which the whole meeting or conference revolves. 

7. Farewell Speech

Farewell speeches are like keynote addresses. These speeches are usually given at graduation ceremonies, or when someone leaves an organization, or at farewell parties. It is celebratory in nature and emphasizes looking ahead to the future.

Eulogies are given at funeral and memorial ceremonies to praise the person who has just died. The basic purpose is to reflect the audience’s emotions and offer condolences to the dead person’s relatives.

Other Types of Speeches

Here are some different types of speeches that are quite common.

  • Motivational Speech Being a special kind of speech, a motivational speech motivates the audience to pursue their betterment. The speaker uses strong and impactful words to encourage the listeners to push themselves to do something better

  • Forensic Speech Forensic speech is practiced in a competitive setting, where students take part in speech competitions. The speakers delivering a forensic speech are typically judged on their presentation, argumentation, communication skills, etc.

Debate Speech Debate speeches typically follow a certain set of rules and take place in a debating event. We can say that debate speech is a form of persuasive speech but includes plenty of facts and figures. 

In a debate speech, you only have to back your claims with plenty of strong facts, but your aim is not to convince the audience to support you. 

Tips to Conduct Effective Research for Your Speech

To make sure you research and deliver your speech in the best way possible, take a look at the tips mentioned below:

  • Research Your Audience : Understand their opinions and thoughts and identify the best way to reach and engage them.
  • Consider the Occasion or Location : Tailor your speech to the specific setting or event
  • Focus on Your Expertise : Concentrate on your area of knowledge and gather comprehensive information on your topic

Chapter 5: Presenting Your Speech Module

Four Types of Speeches

Speeches can be categorized into four broad areas depending on the amount of preparation that is undertaken and depending upon the nature of the occasion.  The four types of speeches are manuscript, memorized, extemporaneous, and impromptu.  Our aim is to acquaint you with these four different modes of delivery, to provide suggestions for when you are asked to make impromptu remarks, and then to focus most your time on the preparation, practice, and presentation of extemporaneous speeches.

Manuscript Speech

When you listen to the President deliver a State of the Union message, you listen to a well-crafted speech being read from a teleprompter. The speech has been polished by a staff of speechwriters and has been practiced many times. The President will know how to anticipate the reaction of the audience and will know when to pause for applause and when to expect laughter. This form of speaking is used when the exact words matter and when much time and energy is expended on getting everything just right. There are times when people who are not leaders of countries deliver manuscript speeches as well. They are used when people testify before Congress, when people read important statements in a public setting, or when people deliver reports at professional meetings. All call for exact words in the correct order.

While the President has access to a staff of speech writers and a teleprompter, most of us do not. If you were given this type of assignment, you would have to read your manuscript speech from printed notes. In that case, you would want to ensure that you had prepared your manuscript carefully, using large fonts so you could read it easily without burying your nose in the pages. Reading the speech does not allow you to skimp on the preparation. Practice the speech many times. This allows you to make changes, if needed, and to select the best words to communicate your exact meaning. Remember to speak clearly and naturally -strive for a conversational tone. It shouldn’t sound read -even if you are reading. Also, remember to speak slowly; there is a natural tendency to speed up when we speak in public. Delivering a speech is not a race; you do not receive bonus points for finishing early.

Unless you are specifically told by your instructor to prepare and deliver a manuscript speech, you should never write out the entire speech. Spend your time developing your outline, organizing your ideas, and determining where you can best insert your supports. Then practice using the outline while speaking.

Memorized Speech

When you were in elementary school, did you ever have to memorize a poem or a part of a speech? If you are like most students, the answer is “Yes. ” There is nothing wrong with memorization. But if you try to memorize a speech, you risk forgetting what you planned to say and coming across as completely unprepared. Memorizing your speech is even worse than reading it. All the objections that apply to the read speech also apply to the memorized speech. Spontaneity is gone. The speech can sound stilted. Often, delivery is too rapid. Concentration is on the words, not the ideas. Sometimes the speech sounds too formal, like a written essay. There is minimal feedback or other contact with the audience. And what happens if your mind goes completely blank or if an audience member interrupts? The entire presentation will likely fall apart. Memorizing a speech puts entirely too much pressure on the speaker.

That said, there are a couple of parts of the speech that you may want to have memorized -or practiced so well that you can deliver them almost as if memorized. These include:

Your introduction:  It sets the stage for the entire speech. The words should be well chosen and rehearsed. You may find that as you repeat this portion of the speech during your rehearsals you do come to memorize it word for word. If so, this is fine. After all, once you have determined the best way of saying something, why not use it? Just make sure the presentation does not sound memorized. Your conclusion:  The summary and call to action are the final words that your audience will hear. As with the introduction, if you practice this repeatedly you will develop the best way to say what you want and you will probably have perfected this portion of the speech.

Impromptu Speech

There will come a time for all of us when we are asked to “say a few words ” without much preparation.  You haven’t prepared any notes, you haven’t practiced what you’ll say, and you’re being asked to “wing it. ” While this may seem incredibly scary, impromptu presentations are the most common type of public speaking. You’re in class and suddenly the professor wants to hear how group projects are going. You, as the leader of your group, are asked to stand and briefly discuss what the group is doing and how much you’ve completed so far. That’s an impromptu speech. You didn’t know when you headed to class that day that you’d be speaking in public, but you did it. No sweat! Or maybe you’re in a meeting at work and the boss announces that he wants you to brief everyone in the meeting on the new equipment being installed that afternoon. Again, no prior planning, no notes, you just do it. That’s impromptu speaking.

Extemporaneous Speech

The focus of most college courses in public speaking is the extemporaneous speech.  This is because this is the type of speech used most in business, education, preaching, and political affairs. Few of us will ever have a professional staff of speechwriters or ever deliver a speech with the aid of a teleprompter. But when you do have a speech or presentation to deliver, you’ll want to sound prepared, authoritative, and clear.

Simply stated, an extemporaneous speech is one where you will have time for preparation and practice but will not be expected to read from a manuscript or to have the speech memorized.  The question most students ask is, “How much time should be spent in preparation and practice? ” Perhaps Mark Twain said it best. When speaking about preparing for an impromptu speech, he noted, “It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech ” (King). While celebrated as a humorist, there is much truth in his words. To appear to be speaking off the cuff, and to do it well, you must prepare thoroughly and practice to perfection. When you speak extemporaneously, it means you’ve had ample time to prepare and research and that you have rehearsed your speech (many times) using an outline or notes to remind you of the progression of ideas you wish to present. You will follow all the normal steps outlined in the earlier chapters. Choose a topic, narrow appropriately, analyze your audience, choose your supports, and create an outline. You will know your speech so well and will amaze your audience!

What do you think of when you hear the word purpose? Technically speaking, purpose can be defined as the reason for which something exists or is created or intended. For public speaking, all definitions apply. For example, why does the speech exist—how is the audience to use the information? Why do we personally create a speech? What is our intention for giving a specific speech? For this chapter, we focus on why we give speeches.

Ever since scholars started writing about public speaking as a distinct phenomenon, they began creating different systems to classify speech types. For example, Aristotle discussed three types: deliberative—political speech; forensic—courtroom speech; and epideictic—praise or blame speech. Cicero also discussed three types: judicial—courtroom speech; deliberative—political speech; and demonstrative—ceremonial speech, which is similar to Aristotle’s epideictic. More recently, St. Augustine of Hippo wrote about three specific speech types: to teach—provide people with information; to delight—entertain or show people false ideas; and to sway—persuade people to a religious ideology. All these speech types help people determine their speech’s general purpose. A general purpose refers to your broad goal in creating and delivering a speech.

These typologies or public speaking classification systems serve to demonstrate that general speech purposes have remained consistent throughout public speaking’s history. Modern public speaking scholars use three general purpose types: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain.

The first general purpose type is to inform . Simply put, to inform means to help audience members acquire information that they do not already possess. Audience members can then use this information to understand something, such as a new technology or a new virus, or to perform a new task, or improve a skill such as how to swing a golf club, or how to assemble a layer cake. The most important goal of speaking to inform is that your audience gains knowledge. However, notice that the goal is not to encourage people to use that knowledge in any specific way. When you speak to encourage people to use knowledge in a specific way, you are no longer informing, you are persuading.

Let’s look at an example of how an you can accidentally go from informing to persuading. Say you are assigned to inform an audience about a new vaccination program. In an informative speech, your purpose is to explain to the audience what the program is and how it works. If, however, you start encouraging your audience to participate in the vaccination program, you are no longer informing them about the program, but rather persuading them to become involved in the program. One of the most common mistakes new public speaking students make is to blur the line between informing and persuading.

Why We Share Knowledge

Knowledge sharing is the process of delivering information, skills, or expertise in some form to people who could benefit from it. In fact, understanding and exchanging knowledge is so important that an entire field of study called knowledge management has been created to help people—especially businesspeople—to become more effective at harnessing and exchanging knowledge. In the professional world, sharing knowledge is becoming increasingly important. Every year, millions of people attend knowledge sharing conference or convention in hopes of learning new information or skills that will help them in their personal or professional lives (Atwood, 2009).

People are motivated to share their knowledge with other people for a variety of reasons (Hendriks, 1999). For some, the personal sense of achievement or of responsibility drives them to share their knowledge, which are internal motivational factors. Others are driven to share knowledge because they desire recognition or possibly to enhance their job, which are external motivational factors. Knowledge sharing is an important part of every society, so learning how to deliver informative speeches is a valuable skill.

Common Types of Informative Topics

Informative Topics fall into six general types as identified by O’Hair, Stewart, and Rubenstein: objects, people, events, concepts, processes, and issues (O’Hair, et al., 2007). The first informative speech type relates to objects , which can include how objects are designed, how they function, and what they mean. For example, one student gave a speech on how to design corsets and used a mannequin to demonstrate how corsets were placed on women and the amount of force necessary to lace one up.

The second informative speech type focuses on people . People-based speeches tend to be biography-oriented. Such topics include recounting an individual’s achievements and explaining why he or she is important in history. Some speakers, who are famous themselves, will focus on their own lives and how various events shaped who they ultimately became. Dottie Walters is most noted as being the first female in the United States to run an advertising agency. In addition to her work in advertising, Dottie spent much time as a professional speaker. She often told the story about her early years in advertising when she pushed around a stroller with her daughter inside as she went from business to business trying to generate interest in her copywriting abilities. You don’t have to be famous, however, to give a people-based speech. Instead, inform your audience about a historical or contemporary hero whose achievements are not widely known.

The third informative speech type involves explaining the significance of specific events , either historical or contemporary. For example, deliver a speech on a specific World War II battle or a specific presidential administration. If you’re a history buff, event-oriented speeches may be right up your alley. There are countless historical events that many people aren’t familiar with and will find interesting. Also, inform your audience about a more recent or contemporary event. Some examples include concerts, plays, and art festivals; athletic competitions; and natural phenomena, such as storms, eclipses, and earthquakes. The point is to make sure that in your informative speech, you talk about the event—who, what, when, where, why—and do not attempt to persuade people to pass judgment upon the event or its effects.

The fourth informative speech type involves concepts or abstract and difficult ideas or theories (O’Hair, et al., 2007). This speech type is very useful in helping people to understand complex ideas. Some include theories related to business, sociology, psychology, religion, politics, art, or any other major study area. For examples, see E. M. The fifth informative speech type involves processes , which are divided into two unique types: how-it-works and how-to-do-it. The first process speech type helps audience members understand how a specific object or system works. For example, explain how a bill becomes a law in the United States. There are very specific steps that a bill must go through before it becomes a law, so there is a very clear process to explain to an audience. The how-to-do-it speech, on the other hand, is designed to help people come to an end result. For example, give a speech on how to quilt, how to change a tire, how to write a résumé, or millions of other how-to oriented topics. In our experience, the how-to speech is probably the most commonly delivered informative speech in public speaking classes.

The sixth and final informative speech type involves issues , problems, or dispute matters (O’Hair, et al., 2007). This informative speech topic is probably the most difficult for novice public speakers because it requires walking a fine line between informing and persuading. If you deliver this speech type, remember the goal is to balance how you discuss both sides of the issue. To Persuade

The second general purpose type is to persuade. When we speak to persuade, we attempt to get listeners to embrace a view point or to adopt a behavior that they would not have done otherwise. A persuasive speech is distinguished from an informative speech by the fact that it includes a call for action for the audience to make some change in their behavior or thinking.

Why We Persuade

Persuasive speech fall into two main categories: pure persuasion and manipulative persuasion. Pure persuasion occurs when a speaker urges listeners to engage in a specific behavior or to change a view point because the speaker truly believes that the change is in the audience members’ best interest. For example, you give a speech on the importance of practicing good oral hygiene because you truly believe that oral hygiene is important and that bad oral hygiene can lead to many physical, social, and psychological problems. In this case, the speaker has no ulterior or hidden motive, such as you are not a toothpaste salesperson.

Manipulative persuasion, on the other hand, occurs when a speaker urges listeners to engage in a specific behavior or to change a view point by misleading them, often to fulfill an ulterior motive beyond the persuasive attempt’s face value. We call this manipulative persuasion because the speaker is not being honest about the real purpose for attempting to persuade the audience. Ultimately, this persuasion form is perceived as highly dishonest when audience members discover the ulterior motive. For example, suppose a physician who also owns much stock in a pharmaceutical company is asked to speak before a physicians’ group about a specific disease. Instead of informing the group about the disease, the doctor spends his time attempting to persuade the audience that the drug his company manufactures is the best treatment for that specific disease.

Obviously, the key question that a persuasive speaker must answer is what is the intent? Is the speaker intending to persuade the audience because of a sincere belief in a certain behavior or view point’s benefits? Or is the speaker using all possible means—including distorting the truth—to persuade the audience because he or she will derive personal benefits from adopting a certain behavior or view point? Unless your speech assignment specifically calls for a manipulative persuasive speech, the usual and ethical understanding of a persuasive speech assignment is that you use the pure persuasion form.

Persuasion: Behavior versus Attitudes, Values, and Beliefs

As we’ve mentioned in the preceding sections, persuasion can address behaviors— listeners’ observable actions—and it can also address intangible thought processes such as attitudes, values, and beliefs.

When the speaker attempts to persuade an audience to change behavior, often we can observe and even measure how successful the persuasion was. For example, after a speech attempting to persuade the audience to donate money to a charity, the charity can measure how many donations were received. The following is a short list of various behavior-oriented persuasive speeches: washing one’s hands frequently and using hand sanitizer, adapting one’s driving habits to improve gas mileage, using open-source software, or drinking one soft drink or soda over another. In all these cases, the goal is to make a change in audience members’ basic behavior.

The second type of persuasive topic involves a change in attitudes, values, or beliefs. An attitude is defined as an individual’s general predisposition toward something as being good or bad, right or wrong, negative or positive. If you believe that dress codes on college campuses are a good idea, give a speech persuading others to adopt a positive attitude toward campus dress codes.

A speaker can also attempt to persuade listeners to change some value they hold. Value refers to an individual’s perception of something’s usefulness, importance, or worth. We can value a college education, we can value technology, and we can value freedom. Values, as a general concept, are fairly ambiguous and tend to be very lofty ideas. Ultimately, what we value in life actually motivates us to engage in many behaviors. For example, if you value protecting the environment, you may recycle more trash than someone who does not hold this value. If you value family history and heritage, you may be more motivated to spend time with your older relatives and ask them about their early lives than someone who does not hold this value.

Lastly, a speaker can attempt to persuade people to change their personal beliefs. Beliefs are propositions or positions that an individual holds as true or false without positive knowledge or proof. Typically, beliefs are divided into two basic categories: core and dispositional. Core beliefs are beliefs that people have actively engaged in and created over their lives, such as a belief in a higher power or a belief in extraterrestrial life forms. Dispositional beliefs, on the other hand, are beliefs that people have not actively engaged in; they are judgments based on related subjects, which people make when they encounter a proposition. Imagine, for example, that you are asked the question, “Can gorillas speak English?” While you may never have met a gorilla or even seen one in person, you can make instant judgments about your understanding of gorillas and fairly certainly say whether you believe that gorillas can speak English, or not.

When it comes to persuading people to alter beliefs, persuading audiences to change core beliefs is more difficult than persuading audiences to change dispositional beliefs. If you find a topic related to a dispositional belief, using your speech to help listeners alter how they process the belief is a realistic possibility. But, as a novice public speaker, avoid persuading people to change their core beliefs. Although core beliefs often appear to be more exciting and interesting than dispositional ones, you are very unlikely to alter anyone’s core beliefs in a five- to ten-minute classroom speech.

To Entertain

The third and final general purpose type is to entertain. Whereas informative and persuasive speechmaking is focused on the speech process’s end result, entertainment speaking is focused on the speech’s theme and occasion. An entertaining speech can be either informative or persuasive at its root, but the speech’s context or theme requires speakers to think about the speech primarily in terms of audience enjoyment.

Why We Entertain

Entertaining speeches are very common in everyday life. An entertaining speech’s fundamental goal is audience enjoyment, which can come in many forms. Entertaining speeches can be funny or serious. Overall, entertaining speeches are not designed to give an audience a deep understanding of life, but instead, to function as a way to divert an audience from their day-to-day lives for a short time. This is not to say that an entertaining speech cannot have real content that is highly informative or persuasive, but its goal is primarily about the speech’s entertaining aspects and not focused on the speech’s informative or persuasive quality.

Common Forms of Entertainment Topics

There are three basic entertaining speech types: the after-dinner speech , the ceremonial speech , and the inspirational speech . The after-dinner speech is a speaking form where a speaker takes a serious speech topic, either informative or persuasive, and injects humor into the speech to make it entertaining. Some novice speakers attempt to turn an after-dinner speech into a stand-up comedy routine, which doesn’t have the same focus (Roye, 2010). After-dinner speeches are first and foremost simply speeches.

A ceremonial speech is an entertaining speech type where the specific speech context is the driving force. Common ceremonial speech types include introductions, toasts, and eulogies. In each case, there are specific events that drive the speech. Maybe you’re introducing an individual who is about to receive an award, or giving a toast at your best friend’s wedding, or delivering the eulogy at a relative’s funeral. In each case, the speech and the speech’s purpose is determined by the event context, not to inform or persuade.

The final entertaining speech type is designed to inspire the audience. Inspirational speeches are based on emotion, with the goal to motivate listeners to alter their lives in some significant way. Florence Littauer, a famous professional speaker, delivers an emotionally charged speech titled “Silver Boxes.” In the speech, Mrs. Littauer demonstrates how people can use positive comments to encourage others in their daily lives. The title comes from a story she tells at the speech’s beginning, where she was teaching a group of children about using positive speech, and one of the children defined positive speech as giving people little silver boxes with bows on top ( speech ).

How do I select a speech topic and a specific purpose?

Primary speech constraints.

One of the most common stumbling blocks for novice public speakers is selecting their first speech topic. Generally, your public speaking instructor will provide you with some fairly specific parameters to make this a little easier, such as speaking about an event that has shaped your life or demonstrating how to do something. Whatever your basic parameters, at some point, you must settle on a specific topic. In this section, we discuss speaking constraints, picking a broad topic, and narrowing your topic.

Speaking Constraints

When we use the word constraint regarding public speaking, we mean any limitation or restriction imposed on the speaker. Whether in the classroom or in the boardroom, speakers are typically given specific instructions that they must follow. These instructions constrain speakers and limit what they can say. For example, professional public speakers are often hired to speak about a specific topic, such as time management, customer satisfaction, or entrepreneurship. In the workplace, a subordinate is assigned to present certain information in a meeting. In these situations, when speakers are hired or assigned to talk about a specific topic, they cannot decide to talk about something else.

Another constraint may occur when a speaker expects to speak for an hour, only to show up and find that the event is running behind schedule and their speech-time is reduced to thirty minutes. Having prepared a sixty-minute speech, the speaker now must determine what stays in and what must go. Both instances illustrate speaker constraint. Typically, we refer to four primary constraints: purpose, audience, context, and time.

The first major constraint involves the speech’s general purpose. As mentioned earlier, there are three general purposes: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. If you’ve been assigned to give an informative speech, you are automatically constrained from delivering a persuasive or entertaining speech. In most public speaking classes, this is the first constraint students will encounter because generally teachers assign you your exact speech purpose.

The second major constraint to consider is audience type. As discussed in the audience analysis chapter, different audiences have different political, religious, and ideological leanings. As such, choosing a speech topic for an audience that has a specific mindset is tricky, so don’t generalize. For example, you’re going to speak at a local Democratic leaders’ meeting. You may think that all Democrats are liberal or progressive, so you craft your topic to this group. But if you make this generalization, you will offend the conservative Democrats in your audience. Obviously, the best way to prevent yourself from picking a topic that is inappropriate for a specific audience is to really know your audience, which is why we recommend conducting an audience analysis.

The third major constraint relates to context. For speaking purposes, context means the set of circumstances surrounding a particular speech. There are countless different contexts in which we may speak: in a college classroom, to a religious congregation, to corporate board members, in a retirement village, or in a political convention. In these different contexts, the speaker expectations are unique and different. Topics appropriate for a religious group may not be appropriate for corporate board members. And appropriate corporate boardroom topics may not be appropriate at a political convention.

The fourth major constraint is your speech’s’ time frame. For speeches given under ten minutes, you must narrowly focus your topic to one major idea. For example, in a ten-minute speech, you cannot realistically discuss the entire US Social Security program. There are countless books, research articles, websites, and other media forms on this topic, so trying to crystallize all that information into ten minutes is not realistic.

Instead, narrow your topic to something that is more realistically manageable within your allotted time. For example, speak about Social Security disability benefits using one disabled person as an example. By focusing on information that can be covered within your time frame, you will accomplish your speech’s goal.

Selecting a Broad Subject Area

Once you know your speech’s basic constraints, think about a topic. The first aspect to consider is what subject area you are interested in examining. A subject area is a broad knowledge area. Art, business, history, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, and education are all broad subject-area examples. When selecting a topic, first pick a broad subject area because each area has a range of subtopics, which will help you quickly limit and weed out topics. For example, if we take art as a broad subject area, break it down further into broad subtopics such as art galleries and how to create art. Then, break down these broad subtopics into narrower subtopics such as prehistoric art, Egyptian art, Grecian art, Roman art, Middle Eastern art, medieval art, Asian art, Renaissance art, modern art. As you can see, topic selection is a narrowing process.

Narrowing Your Topic

Narrowing your topic to something manageable for your speech’s constraints takes time, patience, and experience. One of the biggest mistakes that new public speakers make is not narrowing their topics sufficiently. In the previous section, we demonstrated how the narrowing process works, but even in those examples, we only narrowed subtopics down to still broad areas. Think of narrowing as a funnel. At the wide funnel top are the broad subject areas, and your goal is to narrow your topic further and further down until just one topic can come out the funnel’s small end. The more you narrow your topic, the easier it will be for you to research, write, and deliver your speech.

So, let’s take one of the broad art subject areas and keep narrowing it down to a manageable speech topic. For example, for your constraints, let’s say that your general purpose is to inform; you are delivering the speech in class to your peers; and you have five to seven minutes. Now, let’s start narrowing our topic. The broad area to narrow in this example is Middle Eastern art. When examining the Middle Eastern art category, the first thing you’ll find is that Middle Eastern art is generally grouped into four distinct categories: Anatolian, Arabian, Mesopotamian, and Syro-Palestinian. We’ll select the subtopic Anatolian art, or the art of what is now modern Turkey.

You may think that your topic is now sufficiently narrow, but even within the Anatolian art subtopic, there are smaller categories: pre-Hittite, Hittite, Uratu, and Phrygian art periods. So, let’s narrow our topic again to the Phrygian art period (1200–700 BCE). Although we have now selected a specific art history period in Anatolia, we are still looking at a five-hundred-year period in which much art was created. One famous Phrygian king was King Midas, who according to myth, was given donkey ears and the power of a golden touch by the Greek gods. As such, there is an interesting array of art from the Midas period and its Greek counterparts representing Midas. At this point, we could create a topic about how Phrygian and Grecian art differed in their King Midas portrayals. We now have a topic that is unique, interesting, and definitely manageable in five to seven minutes. You may be wondering how we narrowed down the topic. We just started doing a little research on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website.

Overall, when narrowing your topic, start by asking yourself four basic questions based on the constraints discussed earlier in this section:

  • Does the topic match my intended general purpose?
  • Is the topic appropriate for my audience?
  • Is the topic appropriate for the given speaking context?
  • Can I reasonably hope to inform, persuade, or entertain my audience in my allotted speech time?

Approaches to Finding and Developing a Topic

Uh-oh, what if you have no clue what to speak about at all? Thankfully, there are many places where you can get help finding a good topic. In this section, we discuss various ways to find the best topic.

Conduct a Personal Inventory

The first way to find the best topic is to conduct a personal inventory . A personal inventory is a detailed and descriptive list about an individual. In this case, we want you to think about you. Ask your family and friends to help you. They are a great resource, and they know you well! Here are some basic questions to get you started:

  • What’s your major?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What jobs have you had?
  • What extracurricular activities have you engaged in?
  • What clubs or groups do you belong to?
  • What political issues interest you?
  • Where have you traveled?
  • What type of volunteer work have you done?
  • What are your goals?
  • What social issues interest you?
  • What books do you read?
  • What movies do you watch?
  • What games do you play?
  • What unique skills do you possess?

After responding to these questions, you now have a list of many interests that are unique to you and that you can realistically develop into a speech. If you’re still quite stumped after conducting a personal inventory, the next recommendation we have is to use a finding aid. A finding aid is a tool that will help you find possible topic lists. Three finding aids include polling organizations that tally information, media outlets, and the Internet.

Polling Organizations

There are several polling organizations that regularly conduct American public research. Not only are these organizations good for finding interesting research, the most recent polls indicate what people are interested in understanding today. For example, The Gallup Organization regularly conducts polls to discover Americans’ perceptions of current political issues, business issues, social issues, and other great interesting information. Browsing their website can help you find very interesting speech topics. The following is a list of websites that offer tallied information:

  • The Gallup Organization
  • US Census Bureau
  • Polling Report
  • Rasmussen Reports
  • Zogby International
  • Pew Research Center

Media Outlets

The next great way to find interesting speech topics is to watch television and listen to the radio. The evening news, the History Channel, and the National Geographic channel all provide numerous speech topic ideas. There are even a host of television shows that broadcast the latest and most interesting weekly topics, such as Dateline , 20/20 , and 60 Minutes . Here are some recent 20/20 segment examples to use for interesting speech topics: former Tarzan actor, Steve Sipek, has lived with tigers for forty years; the science behind the Bachelor phenomenon; the world of childhood schizophrenia; and a girl born with a rare “mermaid” condition.

Also, talk radio is full of interesting speech topic possibilities. Prominent talk radio shows must fill two to three hours airtime, five days a week, so show producers are always looking for interesting topics. Let those producers do the investigative work for you! If you’re listening to talk radio and hear an interesting topic, write it down and think about using it for your next speech.

It’s important to understand that your goal is not to use a given television or radio program as the basis for your speech, nor do you want to repeat the exact arguments that a talk radio host or caller has made. We are not advocating stealing someone’s ideas—do your own thinking to hone in on your speech topic. You can certainly use ideas from the media as contributions to your speech; however, if you do this, it is only ethical to make sure that you correctly cite the show from which you heard the topic by telling your audience the title, station, and air date.

The Internet

You can, of course, look for interesting speech topics online. While the Internet may not always provide the most reliable information, it provides a rich source of interesting topics. For example, to browse many interesting blogs, check out blogcatalog.com or findblogs.com. Both websites link to hundreds of blogs you could peruse, searching for a topic that inspires you.

If you find yourself really stumped, there are even a handful of websites that specialize in helping people find speech topics. Yes, that’s right! Some insightful individuals have posted long lists of possible speech topics right on the Internet. Here are some we recommend:

  • Term Paper or Speech Topics

Using the Internet is a great way to find a topic, but you’ll still need to put in the time and do your own thinking to really investigate your topic once you’ve found one that inspires you.

Poll Your Audience for Interests and Needs

The last way you can find a great topic is to poll your audience. For the first poll type, you can research audience interests and needs by either formally handing people a questionnaire or just asking people casually. When you ask potential audience members about their interests, it’s not hard to quickly find that interest patterns exist in every group. Suppose it’s your turn to speak at your business club’s next meeting. If you start asking your fellow club members and other local business owners if there are any specific problems their businesses are currently facing, you will probably see a pattern develop. While you may not be an expert on the topic initially, do some research to see what experts have said on the topic, and pull together a speech using that research.

For the second poll type, conduct what we call a needs analysis . A needs analysis involves a set of activities designed to determine your audience’s needs, wants, wishes, or desires. The purpose of a needs analysis is to find a gap in information that you can fill as a speaker. Again, you can use either informal or formal methods to determine where a need is. Informally, ask people if they have problems with something specific like writing a business plan or cooking in a wok. The only problem that can occur with the informal method is that you often find out that people overestimate their own knowledge about a topic. Someone may think they know how to use a wok even though they’ve never owned one and never cooked in one. For that reason, we often recommend conducting a more formal needs analysis method.

The formal method for conducting a needs analysis is threefold: (1) find a gap in knowledge, (2) figure out the cause, and (3) identify solutions. First, find that a gap in knowledge actually exists. Overall, this isn’t very hard to do. You can have people try to accomplish a task or just orally have them explain a task to you. If you find that they are lacking, you’ll know that a possible need exists. Second, figure out what is causing the gap. One of the mistakes that people make is assuming that all gaps exist because people lack information. This is not necessarily true—it can also be because people lack experience. For example, people may have learned how to drive a car in a driver education class, but if they’ve never been behind the steering wheel, they’re not really going to know how to drive. Would giving a speech on how to drive a car at this point be useful? No. Instead, these people need practice, not another speech. Lastly, when you determine that the major need is informational, it’s time to determine the best way to deliver that information.

Stating the Specific Purpose

Once you have chosen your general purpose and topic, it’s time to take your speech to the next phase and develop your specific purpose . A specific purpose starts with the following: one general purpose, your specific chosen topic, and your objective—what you hope to accomplish with your speech. Basically, answer the who, what, when, where, and why questions to find your speech’s specific purpose.

Getting Specific

To get at your speech’s core—the specific purpose—know whether your general purpose is to inform, persuade, or entertain, which will make picking an appropriate topic easier. Obviously, depending on the general purpose, you will have various topic types. For example, let’s say you want to give a speech about hygiene. You could still give a speech about hygiene despite your general purpose, but the specific purpose would vary depending on whether the general purpose is to inform—discussing hygiene practices around the globe; to persuade—discussing why people need to adopt a specific hygiene practice; or to entertain—discussing some strange and unique hygiene practices that people have used historically. Notice that in each case, the general purpose alters the specific topic, but all three are still fundamentally about hygiene.

Now, when discussing your speech’s specific purpose, you must answer who, what, when, where, why, and how questions. Let’s examine each separately. First , know who is going to be in your audience. Different audiences, as discussed in the audience analysis chapter, have differing desires, backgrounds, and needs. Keeping your audience first and foremost in your thoughts when choosing a specific purpose will increase the likelihood that you create a speech that your audience will find meaningful.

Second you must answer the what question, which is the topic description. When picking an effective topic, make sure that the topic is appropriate for your speech constraints and context limitations.

Third, you must answer the when question, which is when you deliver your speech. Different speeches may be better delivered at different times of the day. For example, explaining the importance of eating breakfast and providing people with cereal bars may be a great topic at 9:00 am, but may not have the same impact if you’re speaking at 4:00 p.m.

Fourth, you must answer the where question, which is the speech’s location. Are you giving a speech in a classroom? At a church? In an executive boardroom? Depending on your speech’s location, different topics may or may not be appropriate.

Fifth, you must answer the why question , which is the reason your audience needs to hear your speech? If your audience doesn’t care about your specific purpose, they are less likely to attend to your speech. If it’s a topic that’s a little more off-the-wall, you’ll really need to think about why they should care.

Once you’ve answered your who, what, when, where, and why questions, it’s time to create your actual specific purpose. First, a specific purpose, in its written form, should be a short, declarative sentence that emphasizes your main speech topic. Let’s look at an example:

Topic The military.
Narrower Topic The military’s use of embedded journalists.
Narrowed Topic British reporter Rupert Hamer’s 2010 death, along with five US Marines, in a roadside bombing in Nawa, Afghanistan.

In this example, we’ve quickly narrowed a topic from a more general topic to a more specific topic. Let’s now look at that topic in terms of a general purpose and specific purpose:

General Purpose To inform.
Specific Purpose To inform my audience about embedded journalism’s dangers by focusing on British reporter Rupert Hamer’s death.
General Purpose To persuade.
Specific Purpose To persuade journalism students to avoid embedded journalism jobs by using British reporter Rupert Hamer’s death as an example of what can happen.

For the purpose of this example, we used the same general topic area, but demonstrated how you could easily turn the topic into either an informative speech or a persuasive speech. In the first example, the speaker is going to talk about the danger embedded journalists face. In this case, the speaker isn’t attempting to alter people’s ideas about embedded journalists, just make them more aware of the dangers. In the second case, the specific purpose is to persuade a group of journalism students (the audience) to avoid jobs as embedded journalists.

Your Specific Statement of Purpose

To form a clear and succinct statement of the specific purpose of your speech, start by naming your general purpose (to inform, to persuade, or to entertain). Follow this by a capsule description of your audience (my peers in class, a group of kindergarten teachers, etc.). Then complete your statement of purpose with a prepositional phrase (a phrase using “to,” “about,” “by,” or another preposition) that summarizes your topic. As an example, “My specific purpose is to persuade the students in my residence hall to protest the proposed housing cost increase” is a specific statement of purpose, while “My speech will be about why we should protest the proposed housing cost increase” is not.

Specific purposes should be statements, not questions. If you find yourself starting to phrase your specific purpose as a question, ask yourself how you can reword it as a statement. Table 6.3 “My Specific Purpose Is…” provides several more examples of good specific purpose statements.

Now that we’ve examined what specific purposes are, we are going to focus on a series of tips to help you write specific purposes that are appropriate for a range of speeches.

Audience, Audience, Audience

First and foremost, you always need to think about your intended audience when choosing your specific purpose. In the previous section, we talked about a speech where a speaker is attempting to persuade a group of journalism students to not take jobs as embedded journalists. Would the same speech be successful, or even appropriate, if given in your public speaking class? Probably not. As a speaker, you may think your topic is great, but you always need to make sure you think about your audience when selecting your specific purpose. For this reason, when writing your specific purpose, start off your sentence by including the words “my audience” or actually listing the name of your audience: a group of journalism students, the people in my congregation, my peers in class, and so on. When you place your audience first, you’re a lot more likely to have a successful speech.

Matching the Rhetorical Situation

After your audience, the second most important consideration about your specific purpose pertains to the rhetorical situation of your speech. The rhetorical situation is the set of circumstances surrounding your speech (e.g., speaker, audience, text, and context). When thinking about your specific purpose, you want to ensure that all these components go together. You want to make sure that you are the appropriate speaker for a topic, the topic is appropriate for your audience, the text of your speech is appropriate, and the speech is appropriate for the context. For example, speeches that you give in a classroom may not be appropriate in a religious context and vice versa.

Make It Clear

The specific purpose statement for any speech should be direct and not too broad, general, or vague. Consider the lack of clarity in the following specific purpose: “To persuade the students in my class to drink more.” Obviously, we have no idea what the speaker wants the audience to drink: water, milk, orange juice? Alcoholic beverages? Furthermore, we have no way to quantify or make sense of the word “more.” “More” assumes that the students are already drinking a certain amount, and the speaker wants them to increase their intake. If you want to persuade your listeners to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, you need to say so clearly in your specific purpose.

Another way in which purpose statements are sometimes unclear comes from the use of colloquial language. While we often use colloquialisms in everyday life, they are often understood only by a limited number of people. It may sound like fun to have a specific purpose like, “To persuade my audience to get jiggy,” but if you state this as your purpose, many people probably won’t know what you’re talking about at all.

Don’t Double Up

You cannot hope to solve the entire world’s problems in one speech, so don’t even try. At the same time, you also want to make sure that you stick to one specific purpose. Chances are it will be challenging enough to inform your audience about one topic or persuade them to change one behavior or opinion. Don’t put extra stress on yourself by adding topics. If you find yourself using the word “and” in your specific topic statement, you’re probably doubling up on topics.

Can I Really Do This in Five Minutes?

When choosing your specific purpose, it’s important to determine whether it can be realistically covered in the amount of time you have. Time limits are among the most common constraints for students in a public speaking course. Usually speeches early in the term have shorter time limits, and speeches later in the term have longer time limits (five to seven minutes). While eight seven may sound like an eternity to be standing up in front of the class, it’s actually a very short period of time in which to cover a topic. To determine whether you think you can accomplish your speech’s purpose in the time slot, ask yourself how long it would take to make you an informed person on your chosen topic or to persuade you to change your behavior or attitudes. If you cannot reasonably see yourself becoming informed or persuaded during the allotted amount of time, chances are you aren’t going to inform or persuade your audience either. The solution, of course, is to make your topic narrower so that you can fully cover a limited aspect of it.

Once you have chosen your general purpose and your topic, it’s time to take your speech to the next phase and develop your specific purpose. A specific purpose starts with one of the three general purposes and then specifies the actual topic you have chosen and the basic objective you hope to accomplish with your speech. Basically, the specific purpose answers the who , what , when , where , and why questions for your speech.

Getting Specific

  • When creating a specific purpose for your speech, first, consider your audience. Second, consider the rhetorical situation. Make sure your specific purpose statement uses clear language, and that it does not try to cover more than one topic.

  • You’ve been asked to give a series of speeches on the importance of health care in poverty-stricken countries. One audience will consist of business men and women, one audience will consist of religious leaders, and another audience will consist of high school students. How would you need to adjust your speech’s purpose for each of these different audiences? How do these different audiences alter the rhetorical situation?
  • For the following list of topics, think about how you could take the same topic and adjust it for each of the different general purposes (inform, persuade, and entertain). Write out the specific purpose for each of your new speech topics. Here are the three general topic areas to work with: the First Amendment to the US Constitution, iPods, and literacy in the twenty-first century.

Types of Speech in Communication

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, and speech is one of its most powerful tools. Speech allows individuals to convey ideas, emotions, intentions, and information effectively. Different types of speech are used depending on the context, audience, and purpose of communication.

Understanding these types helps in selecting the appropriate mode of expression and achieving the desired impact.

1. Informative Speech

Informative speech educates or informs the audience about a particular topic. The primary goal is to provide knowledge, explain concepts, or clarify issues. This type of speech is often used in educational settings, professional presentations, or public lectures.

Example:   A professor giving a lecture on the impacts of climate change is delivering an informative speech. The professor provides data, explains scientific concepts, and discusses potential solutions to the problem. The focus is on sharing factual information to enhance the audience’s understanding.

2. Persuasive Speech

Persuasive speech aims to convince the audience to adopt a certain viewpoint or take a specific action. The speaker uses logical arguments, emotional appeals, and credible evidence to influence the audience’s beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors. Persuasive speeches are common in political campaigns, advertising, and debates.

Example: A politician giving a campaign speech will likely use persuasion to garner support. They might highlight their achievements, present their future plans and appeal to the emotions of the audience by addressing pressing societal issues. The objective is to persuade the audience to vote for them.

3. Demonstrative Speech

Demonstrative speech involves showing the audience how to do something. It combines explanation with practical demonstration, making it easier for the audience to understand and replicate the process. This type of speech is useful in workshops, training sessions, and instructional videos.

Example:  A chef giving a cooking class is engaging in demonstrative speech. They not only explain the recipe but also demonstrate each step, such as chopping vegetables, mixing ingredients, and cooking the dish. The audience learns by watching and can follow along.

4. Entertaining Speech

Entertaining speech is intended to amuse the audience and provide enjoyment. While it may contain informative or persuasive elements, its primary purpose is to entertain. This type of speech is often light-hearted, humorous, and engaging, making it suitable for social events, ceremonies, or entertainment shows.

Example:   A stand-up comedian performing a routine uses an entertaining speech to make the audience laugh. The comedian may share funny anecdotes, joke about everyday situations, or use witty observations to entertain the crowd. The focus is on creating an enjoyable experience.

5. Special Occasion Speech

Special occasion speech is delivered during specific events or ceremonies, such as weddings, graduations, funerals, or award ceremonies. The content is often personalized and tailored to the occasion, focusing on the significance of the event and the emotions associated with it.

Example: During a wedding, the best man might give a special occasion speech to honor the couple. The speech might include heartfelt memories, humorous stories, and well-wishes for the future. The purpose is to celebrate the occasion and express support for the couple.

6. Impromptu Speech

An impromptu speech is delivered without preparation, often in response to an unexpected situation or question. It requires quick thinking and the ability to articulate thoughts clearly on the spot. This type of speech is common in casual conversations, interviews, or meetings.

Example: In a team meeting, an employee might be asked to give an impromptu speech about the progress of a project. Without prior notice, the employee summarizes the project’s status, highlights key achievements, and addresses any challenges. The speech is spontaneous and unscripted.

7. Extemporaneous Speech

Extemporaneous speech is prepared in advance but delivered without a script. The speaker has a general outline or notes but speaks more freely, allowing for natural delivery and adaptability. This type of speech is common in business presentations, academic conferences, and public speaking engagements.

Example: A business executive presenting a quarterly report to stakeholders might use extemporaneous speech. They have prepared key points and data but speak conversationally, adjusting their delivery based on the audience’s reactions and questions. This approach allows for a more engaging and dynamic presentation.

8. Manuscript Speech

Manuscript speech is read word-for-word from a prepared text. This type of speech is often used when precise wording is essential, such as in official statements, legal proceedings, or news broadcasts. The speaker focuses on delivering the content accurately without deviation.

Example: A news anchor reading the evening news is using manuscript speech. The anchor reads from a teleprompter, ensuring that the information is conveyed accurately and clearly. The emphasis is on precision and professionalism.

9. Memorized Speech

Memorized speech involves delivering a speech from memory, without notes or a script. This approach is often used in performances, speeches that require exact wording, or competitive speaking events. Memorization allows for a polished and confident delivery but requires extensive practice.

Example: An actor reciting a monologue in a play is giving a memorized speech. The actor has committed the lines to memory and delivers them with emotion and expression, engaging the audience fully. The speech is fluid and rehearsed, showcasing the actor’s skill.

10. Motivational Speech

Motivational speech is designed to inspire and energize the audience, often encouraging them to pursue their goals or overcome challenges. The speaker uses personal stories, powerful messages, and emotional appeals to uplift the audience and provoke action.

Motivational speeches are common in self-help seminars, leadership conferences, and personal development events.

Example: A life coach speaking to a group of entrepreneurs might give a motivational speech about resilience and perseverance. The coach shares personal experiences of overcoming obstacles and encourages the audience to stay focused on their goals, despite setbacks.

11. Pitch Speech

A pitch speech is a brief, persuasive speech used to present an idea, product, or proposal to an audience, usually with the aim of securing funding, approval, or support. The speaker must be concise, clear, and convincing, often focusing on the benefits and potential impact of the proposal.

Example:  An entrepreneur pitching his startup idea to potential investors is giving a pitch speech. The entrepreneur outlines the problem their product solves, the market opportunity, and how the investors will benefit, all within a few minutes.

A eulogy is a speech delivered at a funeral or memorial service, honoring the life and legacy of a deceased person. The speaker reflects on the person’s character, achievements, and the impact they had on others, often blending personal anecdotes with expressions of gratitude and remembrance.

Example: A family member delivering a eulogy at a funeral might share touching stories about the deceased, highlighting their kindness, generosity, and love for their family. The eulogy serves as a tribute, celebrating the life of the person who has passed away.

Tips for Giving a Great Speech

1. Know Your Audience :  Understanding your audience’s interests, values, and expectations helps tailor your message effectively.

2. Structure Your Speech:   Organize your content with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. A well-structured speech is easier to follow and more impactful.

3. Practice:   Rehearse your speech multiple times to become familiar with the content and improve your delivery. Rehearse your speech alone or in front of your friends (maybe in low numbers) to become familiar with the vocabulary and pronunciation of the precise phrases. so you can control the speed and improve your speech delivery.

4. Use Visual Aids:   Visual aids can enhance understanding and retention. Ensure they are relevant and not overly distracting.

5. Engage with the Audience:  Make eye contact, use gestures, and involve the audience through questions or interactive elements to keep them engaged.

How to Make Your Speech More Memorable

1. Start with a Strong Opening:   Capture attention with a powerful quote, anecdote, or question that relates to your main message.

2. Use Stories:    People remember stories better than facts alone. Incorporate personal or relatable stories to illustrate your points.

3. Be Passionate:  Express enthusiasm and passion for your topic. A passionate delivery can leave a lasting impression.

4. Repeat Key Points:  Repetition helps reinforce important ideas. Summarize key points at the end of your speech to ensure they stick.

5. End with a Call to Action:  Encourage your audience to take a specific action or reflect on your message. A clear and compelling conclusion makes your speech memorable.

7.2 The Topic, General Purpose, Specific Purpose, and Thesis

Before any work can be done on crafting the body of your speech or presentation, you must first do some prep work—selecting a topic, formulating a general purpose, a specific purpose statement, and crafting a central idea, or thesis statement. In doing so, you lay the foundation for your speech by making important decisions about what you will speak about and for what purpose you will speak. These decisions will influence and guide the entire speechwriting process, so it is wise to think carefully and critically during these beginning stages.

Selecting a Topic

Generally, speakers focus on one or more interrelated topics—relatively broad concepts, ideas, or problems that are relevant for particular audiences. The most common way that speakers discover topics is by simply observing what is happening around them—at their school, in their local government, or around the world. Student government leaders, for example, speak or write to other students when their campus is facing tuition or fee increases, or when students have achieved something spectacular, like lobbying campus administrators for lower student fees and succeeding. In either case, it is the situation that makes their speeches appropriate and useful for their audience of students and university employees. More importantly, they speak when there is an opportunity to change a university policy or to alter the way students think or behave in relation to a particular event on campus.

But you need not run for president or student government in order to give a meaningful speech. On the contrary, opportunities abound for those interested in engaging speech as a tool for change. Perhaps the simplest way to find a topic is to ask yourself a few questions, including:

• What important events are occurring locally, nationally and internationally? • What do I care about most? • Is there someone or something I can advocate for? • What makes me angry/happy? • What beliefs/attitudes do I want to share? • Is there some information the audience needs to know?

Students speak about what is interesting to them and their audiences. What topics do you think are relevant today? There are other questions you might ask yourself, too, but these should lead you to at least a few topical choices. The most important work that these questions do is to locate topics within your pre-existing sphere of knowledge and interest. David Zarefsky (2010) also identifies brainstorming as a way to develop speech topics, a strategy that can be helpful if the questions listed above did not yield an appropriate or interesting topic. Starting with a topic you are already interested in will likely make writing and presenting your speech a more enjoyable and meaningful experience. It means that your entire speechwriting process will focus on something you find important and that you can present this information to people who stand to benefit from your speech.

Once you have answered these questions and narrowed your responses, you are still not done selecting your topic. For instance, you might have decided that you really care about breeds of dogs. This is a very broad topic and could easily lead to a dozen different speeches. To resolve this problem, speakers must also consider the audience to whom they will speak, the scope of their presentation, and the outcome they wish to achieve.

Formulating the Purpose Statements

By honing in on a very specific topic, you begin the work of formulating your purpose statement . In short, a purpose statement clearly states what it is you would like to achieve. Purpose statements are especially helpful for guiding you as you prepare your speech. When deciding which main points, facts, and examples to include, you should simply ask yourself whether they are relevant not only to the topic you have selected, but also whether they support the goal you outlined in your purpose statement. The general purpose statement of a speech may be to inform, to persuade, to celebrate, or to entertain. Thus, it is common to frame a specific purpose statement around one of these goals. According to O’Hair, Stewart, and Rubenstein, a specific purpose statement “expresses both the topic and the general speech purpose in action form and in terms of the specific objectives you hope to achieve” (2004). For instance, the home design enthusiast might write the following specific purpose statement: At the end of my speech, the audience will learn the pro’s and con’s of flipping houses. In short, the general purpose statement lays out the broader goal of the speech while the specific purpose statement describes precisely what the speech is intended to do. Some of your professors may ask that you include the general purpose and add the specific purpose.

Writing the Thesis Statement

The specific purpose statement is a tool that you will use as you write your talk, but it is unlikely that it will appear verbatim in your speech. Instead, you will want to convert the specific purpose statement into a central idea, or thesis statement that you will share with your audience.

Depending on your instructor’s approach, a thesis statement may be written two different ways. A thesis statement may encapsulate the main points of a speech in just a sentence or two, and be designed to give audiences a quick preview of what the entire speech will be about. The thesis statement for a speech, like the thesis of a research-based essay, should be easily identifiable and ought to very succinctly sum up the main points you will present. Some instructors prefer that your thesis, or central idea, be a single, declarative statement providing the audience with an overall statement that provides the essence of the speech, followed by a separate preview statement.

If you are a Harry Potter enthusiast, you may write a thesis statement (central idea) the following way using the above approach: J.K. Rowling is a renowned author of the Harry Potter series with a Cinderella like story having gone from relatively humble beginnings, through personal struggles, and finally success and fame.

Writing the Preview Statement

However, some instructors prefer that you separate your thesis from your preview statement . A preview statement (or series of statements) is a guide to your speech. This is the part of the speech that literally tells the audience exactly what main points you will cover. If you were to open your Waze app, it would tell you exactly how to get there. Best of all, you would know what to look for! So, if we take our J.K Rowling example, let’s rewrite that using this approach separating out the thesis and preview:

J.K. Rowling is a renowned author of the Harry Potter series with a Cinderella like rags to riches story. First, I will tell you about J.K. Rowling’s humble beginnings. Then, I will describe her personal struggles as a single mom. Finally, I will explain how she overcame adversity and became one of the richest women in the United Kingdom.

There is no best way to approach this. This is up to your instructor.

Writing the Body of Your Speech

Once you have finished the important work of deciding what your speech will be about, as well as formulating the purpose statement and crafting the thesis, you should turn your attention to writing the body of your speech. All of your main points are contained in the body, and normally this section is prepared well before you ever write the introduction or conclusion. The body of your speech will consume the largest amount of time to present; and it is the opportunity for you to elaborate on facts, evidence, examples, and opinions that support your thesis statement and do the work you have outlined in the specific purpose statement. Combining these various elements into a cohesive and compelling speech, however, is not without its difficulties, the first of which is deciding which elements to include and how they ought to be organized to best suit your purpose.

TYPES OF SPEECH – A short discussion about the types of speech that is according to purpose and according to delivery.

The core of speech is to deliver a message to a group of people called the audience. But the speeches are divided according to the goal of the speaker or the one who is giving the message. The categories have four main concepts: entertaining, informing, demonstrating and persuading. It can also be differentiated according to purpose and delivery.

Types Of Speech

ACCORDING TO PURPOSE

  • Expository or Informative Speech This is the type that provides information history, theories, practical applications, and others of sort. The main purpose of this is to share information to an audience and allow them to be informed – not persude or making them believe about something.
  • Persuasive Speech This is where a speaker persuades or convinces his audience to believe his argument. It also elaborates about something to change the opinion of someone over something. It can be either pure or manipulative
  • Entertainment Speech Ths speech is when someone catches the attention of the audience because of his amusing speech. The main goal is to make the audience laugh throughout the speech without necessarily telling jokes the whole time.

ACCORDING TO DELIVERY

  • Reading From A Manuscript This is purely reading a whole scripted speech. The words are planned, written, and placed in front of the speaker to be read precisely in front of an audience.
  • Memorized Speech This happens if the speaker recited a scripted speech from his memory. He is free of notes.
  • Impromptu Speech One example situation that best defines this is wheh you are cheered to give a speech during your best friend’s wedding. It’s a spur of the moment message.
  • Extemporaneous Speech The speaker prepares a note in advance that will help them lay out their message and in planning in what they are going to say in front of the audience. One disadvantage of this there’s a great chance that one may forget the notes he prepared.

If you ever find it unnecessary, out of fashion, dull, or even have no idea what speeches are for, this article is undoubtedly for you. With each word of this article, you will understand the real purpose of the speeches, how they arose, and what usefulness they bring to our day-to-day lives.

What is a Speech?

Professionals from the most diverse areas have increasingly sought this capacity. For some, this may be an innate ability, but it is an aptitude that can and must be developed continuously for most.

The purpose of Speech depends on the context in which a person speaks, it can be informative, expressive, instructive, and motivational and, mainly, to convince and influence people, regardless of the environment in which they are inserted.

There were also several cases in which oratory was adopted in a pernicious manner, motivating war and discord. Many dictators and heads of state took advantage of their discursive ability to call populations to hatred against their equals.

Activist and pastor Martin Luther King Jr. is an example of a leader that used a speech to spread a message of equal rights in the United States.

He won worldwide fame for speeches such as the “I Have a Dream” speech , being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his significant contribution to combating racism without resorting to violence.

We make others believe something that we hold in their appreciation.Speaking to convince Parliament to legislate on fundamental importance or when we want someone to lend us their car.
The speaker carefully prepares a short speech that stages and interprets recurring mechanisms usually humorous and alluding to unusual situations.Stand-Up comedy is one of the best examples of a speech aimed at entertaining the audience. 
The speeches of football coaches to their teams, for example, may involve a motivating dimension capable of changing the way the squad looks at itself and ultimately leading it to overcome. So it was with Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela they inspired and simultaneously motivated the audience to think or act differently.
Delivering a message to the public to be aware or acknowledge a group about it. In these speeches, it is notified, clarified, and made known.
So it is with press conferences or news that seek to enlighten citizens/supporters/consumers about any event.
Some speeches defend a cause, be it a social, environmental, political, or cultural cause; in speeches advocating a topic, we find persuasive communication that focuses specifically on convincing the audience from the speaker’s point of view.An example is Al Gore at the Web Summit held in 2017 in Lisbon. Al Gore is an environmental activist invited worldwide to address global warming and warn of the need to change environmental policies for the planet’s sustainable future.
Not only is it a form of standing up for yourself, but those who need a voice, one of which is to defend a cause, allows us to change social reality and inspire people.

The Importance of Speech

The ability to effectively use a speech is critical because it opens doors of opportunities for most individuals in their lives. Common examples are: standing out in work meetings, job interviews, inspiring people with graduation speeches, closing negotiations, sales, among many others.

It is impossible to predict when a presentation situation will happen; often, a potential customer or partner does not warn you before appearing. A critical work opportunity can arise at unexpected times. 

When these occasions occur, it is best to be prepared; letting the stomach chill, excessive sweating, and shivering get in the way of a presentation is a choice. 

Anyone can use oratory to their advantage. And it all starts with a change of attitude: it is necessary to see the presentation situations as opportunities and no longer punishments.

The Use of Speech in History

Throughout history, speeches have influenced people to combat injustice or show solidarity with others, comfort mourners, honor those who deserve it, and many other situations.

In short, addressing the public is an effective means of inducing it to virtuous action. It is in moments of tragedy and crisis that this characteristic stands out the most.

The purpose of giving a speech is unique and, at the same time Versatile, it has the role of conveying a message in various ways, whether it is entrenched, persuading, informing, or combining multiple forms.

Meditation has a history that goes back thousands of years, and many meditative techniques began in Eastern traditions. The term “meditation” refers to a variety of practices that focus on mind and body integration and are used to calm the mind and enhance overall well-being. Some types of meditation involve maintaining mental focus on a particular sensation, such as breathing, a sound, a visual image, or a mantra, which is a repeated word or phrase. Other forms of meditation include the practice of mindfulness, which involves maintaining attention or awareness on the present moment without making judgments.

Programs that teach meditation or mindfulness may combine the practices with other activities. For example, mindfulness-based stress reduction is a program that teaches mindful meditation, but it also includes discussion sessions and other strategies to help people apply what they have learned to stressful experiences. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy integrates mindfulness practices with aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy.

Meditation and mindfulness practices usually are considered to have few risks. However, few studies have examined these practices for potentially harmful effects, so it isn’t possible to make definite statements about safety.

A 2020 review examined 83 studies (a total of 6,703 participants) and found that 55 of those studies reported negative experiences related to meditation practices. The researchers concluded that about 8 percent of participants had a negative effect from practicing meditation, which is similar to the percentage reported for psychological therapies. The most commonly reported negative effects were anxiety and depression. In an analysis limited to 3 studies (521 participants) of mindfulness-based stress reduction programs, investigators found that the mindfulness practices were not more harmful than receiving no treatment.

According to the National Health Interview Survey, an annual nationally representative survey, the percentage of U.S. adults who practiced meditation more than doubled between 2002 and 2022, from 7.5 to 17.3 percent. Of seven complementary health approaches for which data were collected in the 2022 survey, meditation was the most popular, beating out yoga (used by 15.8 percent of adults), chiropractic care (11.0 percent), massage therapy (10.9 percent), guided imagery/progressive muscle relaxation (6.4 percent), acupuncture (2.2 percent), and naturopathy (1.3 percent).

For children aged 4 to 17 years, data are available for 2017; in that year, 5.4 percent of U.S. children used meditation.

In a 2012 U.S. survey, 1.9 percent of 34,525 adults reported that they had practiced mindfulness meditation in the past 12 months. Among those responders who practiced mindfulness meditation exclusively, 73 percent reported that they meditated for their general wellness and to prevent diseases, and most of them (approximately 92 percent) reported that they meditated to relax or reduce stress. In more than half of the responses, a desire for better sleep was a reason for practicing mindfulness meditation.

Meditation and mindfulness practices may have a variety of health benefits and may help people improve the quality of their lives. Recent studies have investigated if meditation or mindfulness helps people manage anxiety, stress, depression, pain, or symptoms related to withdrawal from nicotine, alcohol, or opioids. 

Other studies have looked at the effects of meditation or mindfulness on weight control or sleep quality. 

However, much of the research on these topics has been preliminary or not scientifically rigorous. Because the studies examined many different types of meditation and mindfulness practices, and the effects of those practices are hard to measure, results from the studies have been difficult to analyze and may have been interpreted too optimistically.

  • A 2018 NCCIH-supported analysis of 142 groups of participants with diagnosed psychiatric disorders such as anxiety or depression examined mindfulness meditation approaches compared with no treatment and with established evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy and antidepressant medications. The analysis included more than 12,000 participants, and the researchers found that for treating anxiety and depression, mindfulness-based approaches were better than no treatment at all, and they worked as well as the evidence-based therapies.
  • A 2021 analysis of 23 studies (1,815 participants) examined mindfulness-based practices used as treatment for adults with diagnosed anxiety disorders. The studies included in the analysis compared the mindfulness-based interventions (alone or in combination with usual treatments) with other treatments such cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and relaxation. The analysis showed mixed results for the short-term effectiveness of the different mindfulness-based approaches. Overall, they were more effective than the usual treatments at reducing the severity of anxiety and depression symptoms, but only some types of mindfulness approaches were as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. However, these results should be interpreted with caution because the risk of bias for all of the studies was unclear. Also, the few studies that followed up with participants for periods longer than 2 months found no long-term effects of the mindfulness-based practices.
  • A 2019 analysis of 23 studies that included a total of 1,373 college and university students looked at the effects of yoga, mindfulness, and meditation practices on symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Although the results showed that all the practices had some effect, most of the studies included in the review were of poor quality and had a high risk of bias.

Few high-quality studies have examined the effects of meditation and mindfulness on blood pressure. According to a 2017 statement from the American Heart Association, the practice of meditation may have a possible benefit, but its specific effects on blood pressure have not been determined.

  • A 2020 review of 14 studies (including more than 1,100 participants) examined the effects of mindfulness practices on the blood pressure of people who had health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or cancer. The analysis showed that for people with these health conditions, practicing mindfulness-based stress reduction was associated with a significant reduction in blood pressure.

Studies examining the effects of mindfulness or meditation on acute and chronic pain have produced mixed results.

  • A 2020 report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality concluded that mindfulness-based stress reduction was associated with short-term (less than 6 months) improvement in low-back pain but not fibromyalgia pain.
  • A 2020 NCCIH-supported analysis of five studies of adults using opioids for acute or chronic pain (with a total of 514 participants) found that meditation practices were strongly associated with pain reduction.
  • Acute pain, such as pain from surgery, traumatic injuries, or childbirth, occurs suddenly and lasts only a short time. A 2020 analysis of 19 studies examined the effects of mindfulness-based therapies for acute pain and found no evidence of reduced pain severity. However, the same analysis found some evidence that the therapies could improve a person’s tolerance for pain.
  • A 2017 analysis of 30 studies (2,561 participants) found that mindfulness meditation was more effective at decreasing chronic pain than several other forms of treatment. However, the studies examined were of low quality.
  • A 2019 comparison of treatments for chronic pain did an overall analysis of 11 studies (697 participants) that evaluated cognitive behavioral therapy, which is the usual psychological intervention for chronic pain; 4 studies (280 participants) that evaluated mindfulness-based stress reduction; and 1 study (341 participants) of both therapies. The comparison found that both approaches were more effective at reducing pain intensity than no treatment, but there was no evidence of any important difference between the two approaches.
  • A 2019 review found that mindfulness-based approaches did not reduce the frequency, length, or pain intensity of headaches. However, the authors of this review noted that their results are likely imprecise because only five studies (a total of 185 participants) were included in the analysis, and any conclusions made from the analysis should be considered preliminary.

Several clinical trials have investigated if mindfulness-based approaches such as mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP) might help people recover from substance use disorders. These approaches have been used to help people increase their awareness of the thoughts and feelings that trigger cravings and learn ways to reduce their automatic reactions to those cravings.

  • A 2018 review of 37 studies (3,531 total participants) evaluated the effectiveness of several mindfulness-based approaches to substance use disorder treatment and found that they significantly decreased participants’ craving levels. The mindfulness-based practices were slightly better than other therapies at promoting abstinence from substance use.
  • A 2017 analysis specifically focused on MBRP examined 9 studies (901 total participants) of this approach. The analysis concluded that MBRP was not more effective at preventing substance use relapses than other treatments such as health education and cognitive behavioral therapy. However, MBRP did slightly reduce cravings and symptoms of withdrawal associated with alcohol use disorders.

Studies have suggested that meditation and mindfulness may help reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  • A 2018 review supported by NCCIH examined the effects of meditation (in 2 studies, 179 total participants) and other mindfulness-based practices (in 6 studies, 332 total participants) on symptoms of PTSD. Study participants included veterans, nurses, and people who experienced interpersonal violence. Six of the eight studies reported that participants had a reduction of PTSD symptoms after receiving some form of mindfulness-based treatment.
  • A 2018 clinical trial funded by the U.S. Department of Defense compared the effectiveness of meditation, health education, and prolonged exposure therapy, a widely accepted treatment for PTSD recommended by the American Psychological Association. Prolonged exposure therapy helps people reduce their PTSD symptoms by teaching them to gradually remember traumatic memories, feelings, and situations. The study included 203 veterans with PTSD as a result of their active military service. The results of the study showed that meditation was as effective as prolonged exposure therapy at reducing PTSD symptoms and depression, and it was more effective than PTSD health education. The veterans who used meditation also showed improvement in mood and overall quality of life.

Mindfulness-based approaches may improve the mental health of people with cancer.

  • A 2019 analysis of 29 studies (3,274 total participants) of mindfulness-based practices showed that use of mindfulness practices among people with cancer significantly reduced psychological distress, fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, most of the participants were women with breast cancer, so the effects may not be similar for other populations or other types of cancer.

The review found that these practices were very effective methods for managing eating behaviors but less effective at helping people lose weight.   • A 2018 analysis of 19 studies (1,160 total participants) found that mindfulness programs helped people lose weight and manage eating-related behaviors such as binge, emotional, and restrained eating. The results of the analysis showed that treatment programs, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, that combine formal meditation and mindfulness practices with informal mindfulness exercises were especially effective methods for losing weight and managing eating.
