As schools continue to close across the country, I know many will be scrambling to set up ways for their students to continue their learning at home.  I’ve gathered a huge list of (now over 120) free educational websites for learning at home with resources and online activities you can easily assign to your students to do remotely. These websites are either always free or offer a free 30-day trial which is ideal for temporary distance learning.

Free Educational Websites for Learning at Home

The impact of COVID-19 on education has been life altering for students, teachers, and parents. Putting technology in place for students to learn from home has been a challenge for everyone. I want to address how we can accommodate students who don’t have access to devices or internet at home. In an effort to do that, I have put together FREE At-Home Learning Menus to send home with your students or email to parents. The menus include activities for all subject areas and are ideal for grades 1-3. The download also includes a parent letter. These are all screen-free activities that can be used to supplement your online teaching or sent home at the end of the year for summer review.

As far as I can tell, Epic is not free for home use. They can get a free 30 day trial, but it can only be accessed after they enter credit card information. I was hoping to use that one, because I use it in my classroom all the time and love it.

Epic! is always free for kids at home if the teacher makes the classroom and gives the parents the class code. The only thing is Epic! is only free to use at home during “school hours” so it is not available for free use in the late evenings around bedtime.

The drawback however, is that there is less quality control and some poorly written third-party plugins can leave your website vulnerable to security threats.

The backend can be quite confusing for the non-developer so you'll likely need someone on staff to help with site maintenance if you choose to go with this platform. Sitecore has a variety of attractive website designs but there is limited flexibility in the design if you aren’t experienced with coding.

9. Top School Website: Putney High School

Putney High School is an all girls’ school in London, UK. The high school is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, a network of 25 independent schools and academies. The mission of the school is to build confident, creative thinkers and deliver an education that is truly relevant to their future.

Why We Love Putney High School’s Web Design

Putney High School’s web design has very slick animations with a unique navigation menu that drops down when you hover over the main categories. Rates of depression and anxiety have risen among teens over the last decade. Amid this ongoing mental health crisis, the American Psychological Association issued guidelines for parents to increase protection for teens online last year.

In this encore episode, NPR science correspondent Michaeleen Doucleff looks into the data on how that change has impacted the mental health of teenagers. In her reporting, she found that the seismic shift of smartphones and social media has re-defined how teens socialize, communicate and even sleep.

Governor Newsom urges schools to immediately restrict cell phones in the classroom ahead of the new school year

What you need to know: As schools across California welcome students back to campus, Governor Newsom is calling on all schools in the state to immediately restrict cell phone use in classrooms.

Sacramento — In a letter to California schools, Governor Gavin Newsom today called on every school district to restrict smartphone use in classrooms as the new academic year begins. In his letter, the Governor applauds districts that have already implemented cell phone restrictions, like Los Angeles Unified, and reminded education leaders of the mental health, scholastic, and social risks of cell phone use in classrooms.

In 2019, Governor Newsom signed AB 272 (Muratsuchi) into law, which grants school districts the authority to regulate the use of smartphones during school hours. Building on that legislation, he is currently working with the California Legislature to further limit student smartphone use on campuses. In June, the Governor announced efforts to restrict the use of smartphones during the school day.

Dear School Leaders,

As we strive to create the best learning environment for all students this new academic year, I write today to raise an urgent issue that affects their well-being: the pervasive use of smartphones in schools.

Excessive smartphone use among youth is linked to increased anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that 72% of high school and 33% of middle school teachers report cell phone distractions as a major problem. Common Sense Media found that 97% of students use their phones during the school day for a median of 43 minutes. Combined with the U.S. Surgeon General’s warning about the risks of social media, it is urgent to provide reasonable guardrails for smartphone use in schools.

As I work with the Legislature to further limit student smartphone use on campus, there is no reason for schools to wait. In 2019, I signed AB 272 (Muratsuchi) into law, which grants school districts the authority to regulate the use of smartphones during school hours. This legislation was a crucial step in our efforts to minimize distractions and foster a more conducive environment for our students to learn. It is imperative that school districts take full advantage of this law to address the growing concerns surrounding student well-being and academic performance.

Leveraging the tools of this law, I urge every school district to act now to restrict smartphone use on campus as we begin the new academic year. The evidence is clear: reducing phone use in class leads to improved concentration, better academic outcomes, and enhanced social interactions. Schools and districts, including Santa Barbara Unified and Bullard High in Fresno, have seen positive impacts of limiting smartphones on campus, with some reporting higher test scores, grades, and student engagement, and less bullying and damage to school facilities. I applaud these districts, and others like LA Unified, for their leadership.

Every classroom should be a place of focus, learning, and growth. Working together, educators, administrators, and parents can create an environment where students are fully engaged in their education, free from the distractions on the phones and pressures of social media.

Mayor Wu, Superintendent Skipper Celebrate Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School Topping Off Ceremony

Today, Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper, the City's Public Facilities Department, and community members participated in a topping off ceremony for an addition to the Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School. The Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School, in the heart of East Boston, is a small, close knit school that enrolls approximately 300 students. Its mission is to educate students by providing a safe, healthy, and family environment. This $21.5 million project includes a 4,000 square foot two story addition, housing a new main entrance at-grade, a new stairwell, a new elevator serving all three levels of the building, and accessible toilets. It also includes a renovation to provide accessibility upgrades and fire protection service to the entire existing school building. 

“Every student deserves a school environment that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing,” said Mayor Michelle Wu . “Thanks to the work of our partners at BPS, Public Facilities, and community members, the Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School will now better serve its students.”

“Projects like this show what happens when we come together and put the needs of our young people first,” said Superintendent Mary Skipper . “This $21 million project is a direct investment into our students, educators, staff and the East Boston community to make the PJK a safer, more accessible school that provides the high quality student experience that we envision for every child in Boston.”

Today's topping off ceremony celebrates the placement of the last beam, marking the completion of the school addition’s steel structure. Mayor Wu, Superintendent Skipper, the City’s Public Facilities Department, City officials, and Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School community members were at the event to sign the final beam. The design of the addition and renovations will provide a safe, healthy, and inclusive school environment, unlocking each Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School student’s full potential. Partial renovations to the existing school building will be completed for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. The addition and remaining renovation work will be completed for the start of the 2025-2026 school year. The Public Facilities Department, in partnership with BPS, began construction on the addition and renovations in April 2024.

Renovations in the existing building consist of the complete renovation of toilets throughout, all new windows, installation of a heat pump system, replacement of drinking fountains, installation of a fire protection system, modification to the remaining stairs, replacement of doors and hardware, signage, and other work.

Other upgrades include replacement and relocation of the playground equipment and modifications to the hard-surface play area and parking lot. A new exterior stair and sidewalk ramp access from Bennington Street will replace a large swath of unused asphalt, along with new fencing.

“We are thrilled to have reached this construction milestone,” said Public Facilities Department Executive Director Carleton Jones . “Reaching this step brings us closer to fulfilling our commitment to delivering an accessible, safe learning environment for all students at the Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School.”

Cellphone Bans In Schools Grow: Gavin Newsom Requests Restrictions In California

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., in a letter Tuesday asked California school districts to implement restrictions on cellphones in classrooms for the upcoming school year, which comes as other states crack down on student phone use amid mental health concerns.

In the letter , Newsom said California school districts should “act now” to help students focus in schools by restricting their phone use, adding reduced phone use could result in “improved concentration, better academic outcomes and enhanced social interactions.”

Newsom’s office said in a statement the governor was “currently working” with California’s legislature on further restrictions for student phone use after he approved some restrictions in 2019, though the new restrictions were not specified.

Florida became the first state with a ban on cellphone use during class in a bill approved by lawmakers last year, which includes a ban on social media access while using a school’s Wi-Fi.

Indiana lawmakers approved in April a ban on wireless devices—applying to cellphones, tablets, laptops or gaming devices—during class.

Minnesota lawmakers also approved restrictions in April, requiring school districts in the state to adopt limits on cellphone use by the start of the 2025-2026 school year.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill in May requiring school districts to establish policies on cellphone use, which will take effect no later than July 2025, DeWine said.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order last month for school districts to create policies for a “phone-free education,” limiting the time children spend on phones “without parental supervision,” which will take effect Jan. 1.

What To Watch For

David O’Shield, chairman of South Carolina’s Department of Education, told the Associated Press a final vote on when to enact proposed restrictions for the state was postponed on Tuesday until an unspecified date in September. A committee of South Carolina lawmakers approved adding a clause to the state’s budget last month that would require schools to ban phone use by the start of 2025 or they would lose state funding. A delay in implementing the clause followed input from teachers, parents and administrators, O’Shield said. Other states have introduced legislation that would prevent students from using their cellphones while in class over the last year, including Oklahoma , Washington, Kansas , Vermont , Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland and Arizona. Gov. Spencer Cox, R-Utah, said earlier this year he supports a Utah-wide ban on phones in the classroom. Gov. Kathy Hochul said she would propose New York restrictions in 2025, according to The New York Times .

77%. That’s the percentage of schools in the U.S. that say they restrict cellphones outside of academic use as of the 2021-2022 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. A study from the nonprofit Common Sense Media found about 97% of teens use their phones during the school day.

Calls for restrictions on cellphone use in schools have increased in recent years, as studies indicate the negative impact of social media on youth as phone use rises. A study by the Pew Research Center in April found about 72% of high school teachers and 33% of middle school teachers in the U.S. said cellphone distractions were a “major problem” during class. Despite calls for statewide bans, bans are largely opposed by parents who say their children need phones for emergencies, while some school officials say restrictions will be difficult to enforce. In an op-ed for The New York Times last month, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said a warning label should be required on social media platforms, stating “that social media is associated with significant mental health harm for adolescents.” Murthy previously issued an advisory in 2023, warning about the impacts of social media use on youth mental health, noting evidence indicates “profound risk.”
