"जीवनमा मेरो उद्देश्य" शिर्षकमा निबन्ध ( essay on " My Aim In Life" in Nepali Language)

Essay On My Aim in Life

Almost everyone has definitely set a basic aim or target for themselves. It is stated as a aim in life . A strategy for living a successful life is part of having a goal in life . A goal in life inspires focus , dedication , and persistence at work, all of which are essential for career success . An individual without a purpose in life may be compared to a ship without a rudder.

A lot of people dream of becoming doctors or engineers . However, I believe that the lives of engineers and doctors are both too demanding and monotonous. It is preferable to make less money doing a job you like than to make more money doing one you don't. Being a skilled farmer is what I want to do with my life. It tickles my intense attention.

Our nation is primarily an agricultural one. It has a variety of natural environments that are suited for a variety of agricultural species. The country's primary economic activity is still agriculture. Agriculture serves as the foundation for the majority of our industries. However, the situation of our agriculture at the moment is not very promising. Despite the fact that the majority of people are still working in this profession, the results are not adequate. The dearth of trained and knowledgeable farmers is the primary cause of this low agricultural productivity. So good farmers are what we absolutely must have for the prosperity of our country.

Even though it is the foundation of our economy, Nepal's agriculture is somewhat underdeveloped. Many dedicated students are not interested in going into this conventional profession. I believe that our efforts to strengthen our agriculture, which still accounts for almost to 50% of our national economy, must be given top attention. If all farmers can succeed, our economy would undoubtedly prosper.

In my hometown of Sunsari , I am in grade 9 and majoring in agriculture. I come from a farming family that has long practiced traditional subsistence farming. But I want to grow it commercially for use in industry. At the very least within my district, I want to establish myself as an inventive and skilled farmer.

I will enroll in an agricultural science college as I had planned. I'll put a lot of effort into my studies, and after completing my BSc in Agriculture , I'll enroll in horticulture classes. Then, after establishing a cooperative and beginning coffee farming on the slopes and fields of our family land, I will return to my district. We might also make use of more leased land. Our cooperative will have a trained workforce. We'll employ the greatest technologies and the species that are most suited to the area's climate and geography. We'll ask the Agriculture Office in my district and the Agriculture Research Centre in koshi for the necessary technical assistance.

Our cooperative will gather money to open its own coffee processing facility. Local coffee will be gathered and processed. The product will be distributed to both domestic and foreign markets. However, we will offer very affordable prices to the local people. Both cultivation and processing will be expanded and modernized with a significant portion of the earnings. I have faith that this will result in an income that is sufficient to support our family and allow us to keep a healthy savings. Additionally, we will be able to generously support local community growth and social welfare. We'll encourage more farmers in our district to grow cash crops like coffee.

Essay (My Aim in Life)

  My Aim in Life

Everybody in the world must have his or her aim in life. A man without any aim can do nothing in life. Aim is helpful to get success in life. Aim helps people to run their future life easily. Different people have different aims in life. Some people want to earn a lot of money whereas some people wish to acquire knowledge. Some People want to have glory and fame.

Our country is very poor and is therefore backward in many aspects. The progress of a country depends upon agriculture, industry and trade. I am an ordinary boy. I want to be a teacher. My aim in life is to teach my illiterate villagers. Illiteracy is the main problem of our country. I want to avoid this problem from my country.

Education is the light of life. Without good education, people cannot do creative and advanced works. So, I would like to teach all. Children are the pillars of nation so they must get the chance to be educated. If farmers are educated, they can grow a lot of crops. Everybody should be warned in the country that over population is problem to all. I will try my best to teach uneducated people that the only remedy for the uncontrolled population growth is family planning. Education is necessary in every field so I would like to spread education. Without education development of the country is not possible so I think my aim is fruitful for the society and my country as well. I’m a student now whether my aim becomes true or not in future.

Essay on My Aim in Life for school and college students

Essay on My Aim in Life is a frequently asked question in various levels of competitive exams. The following essay on ‘My Aim in Life’ is a sample essay for school and college students. We will be uploading different versions of the essay over time.

Essay on My Aim in Life [309 words #Sample 1]:

Everyone in the world has a definite aim, and it is a good thing to have a purpose in life because a person without an aim is likely to end in failure. As I look forward to shaping my future, I firmly believe in becoming a good teacher for a number of reasons.

To begin with, a teacher can significantly contribute to his or her society in different ways. Firstly, s/he produces some responsible and accountable citizens, who in turn can help in introducing necessary change initiatives in their community. As a result, we will have an ideal society that can make a meaningful contribution to nation building. Secondly, I will be able to plan and execute the concept of preserving indigenous knowledge and resources that always inspire people to know their self because we can conquer the world when we, first of all, know ourselves and our rich cultural heritage. Finally, I will be capable enough in updating myself throughout my life, and it will always keep me active academically, professionally, and physically.

Moreover, my choice may not be liked by many because they think that one cannot make a lot of money in this profession. However, frankly speaking, dreams of becoming rich do not allure me very much. If some reasonable means of subsistence are supplied to meet the basic necessities of a respectable living, I should feel particularly happy in my work as a teacher. Similarly, I sometimes plunge into the pleasing fancy that some of my students entering different walks of life will enrich society with their character and ability. To train youths so as to make them grow up into helpful members of the community is the objective of my life.

To summarize, the pursuit of this aim is, with me, a very agreeable process. It is a pleasure by itself and a reward.

Essay on My Aim in Life [130 words #Sample 2]:

Every man in the world must have some aim in life. A man without aim can have no success in life. Different people have different aims in life. Some people want to become wealthy. Some wish to acquire knowledge. Some men want glory and fame. Our country is very poor and therefore backward in many aspects. The progress of a country depends on agriculture, industry, and trade. My aim in life is to teach my illiterate villagers without taking any advantage of them.

First of all, farmers should be taught how to get good crops. Everyone in the country should be made aware that overpopulation is a problem for everyone. I will try my best to teach uneducated people that the only remedy for uncontrolled population growth is family planning.

Essay on My Aim in Life [297 words #Sample 2]:

Everybody has an aim in life. Some have high aims, but some have simple ones. A man without aim is like an aimless boat floating toward a potential danger. So I too have an aim.

My aim is to become an efficient doctor and serve the backward and poor people of my community. Most of our people are uneducated or illiterate and are conservatives. They need proper help and guidance. They do not know the importance of good health or how to enjoy a healthy life. Many people die of illness every year because of their ignorance. There are only a few doctors in our country. But they do not want to live in villages.

If I become a doctor, I will set up my clinic in a town at first and earn a lot of money. Then I will go to the village to serve the poor villagers who don't get proper help from the government and wealthy people. I shall build a small hospital in the village where I won't charge any fee to the poor and helpless people. I shall work day and night to improve the health condition of the villagers. I'll try to remove their blind beliefs and superstitions. I will make people understand how to keep themselves safe from various diseases, the causes of diseases, and their symptoms by using preventive measures. I shall teach them that prevention is better than cure, and similarly, I shall explain the value of clean drinking water, good sanitation, and a balanced diet.

I will do some research to cure dangerous diseases from the plants and creepers, which are the source of medicine. In this way, I will help my poor countrymen in every possible way by earning name and fame as well as money.

The aim in life is really important because an aimless person is like a rudderless ship in the sea and does not know the direction of their destination. Likewise, if we also don’t have an aim in our life, we won’t know where to reach. I always wanted to be a professor and now my family is inspiring me to become a professor too. My parents are really supportive and they respect my decision. My favourite subject is English . My teachers are really helpful and they help me a lot to understand everything on this particular subject. They also guide me a lot about future decisions.

Ms. Divya is my English professor and she knows about my future plans. She always inspires me to do better and work harder. The reason behind My Future Plan: I have a few specific reasons for my future plan. I was once explaining some doubts of my classmates and I realized that I really like explaining and teaching. After my English Honours degree, I will prepare for the Master’s degree. I am pretty much confident about that and I know I will work hard to pursue my dream. Everyone should have a reasonable aim in their life that will help them to reach success.

The aim in life is really important because an aimless person is like a rudderless ship in the sea and does not know the direction of their destination. Likewise, if we also don’t have an aim in our life, we won’t know where to reach. Thus to achieve it one has to overcome many obstacles and setbacks from time to time. I always wanted to be a professor and now my family is inspiring me to become a professor too. My parents are really supportive and they respect my decision. I have seen lots of my friends want to become a professor, and some of them want to pursue an MBA . There are a lot of aims and goals available that students can choose in their lives. Right now in this world, the top trending professions are Doctor, Teacher, Programmer, Designer, Architect, Marketer, Supervisor, Manager, Engineer, etc. Maybe you have something unique in you and you want to pursue that. So different people adopt different aims according to their inclinations, tastes or perceptions about life. My teachers are really helpful and are always guiding and helping me with my future plans.

They have always inspired me to do better and work harder. I was once explaining some doubts to my classmates and I realized that I really like explaining and teaching. Later, I experienced teaching while doing an internship with an NGO. I went to a slum and taught kids there. I felt a different kind of satisfaction after teaching them. At that time I realized that I had never felt happier than this and decided to become a professor. I am one who enjoys exploring new places and getting to know new cultures, languages, and cuisines, and working as a professor offers many chances for me to develop those interests. After my English Honours degree, I will prepare for the Master’s degree. Then I am planning to take the UGC NET exam . Another big plus is the working hours that academia can offer, which are frequently more flexible than in other professions.

The biggest advantage of being a professor is that I find jobs in many places worldwide. I am really honest and passionate about my aim in life. It is surely a long journey but I will try my best to reach my goal and I suggest everyone do the same. According to me, timely execution of an action plan with a proactive attitude is the key to success. One of the best ways to stay motivated is by visualizing the change and likewise by achieving step-by-step milestones.

My aim in life is to grow to be a doctor in the future. I believe that medicine is one of the noblest professions to pursue in the world. I belong to a family of doctors and just like my mother, I aspire to be a neurosurgeon. The study of neurology and its impact on our behaviour, personality, and character is what intrigues me the most about the field. My curiosity towards the medical world and ambition to be a doctor is what motivates me to study harder and more diligently. The study of medicine is not easy but it opens up a whole new world of interaction. Learning about basic cell function to discovering the mechanisms of our brain is a fascinating journey. As a school student, I wish to excel in certain subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, maths, and psychology so that I can pursue my dream of becoming a doctor and a neurosurgeon. I hope to participate in different charities, health clinics, and services to gain the relevant skills one needs to be a doctor. I wish to work upon my social and communication skills because good communication is the backbone of every industry. I have the confidence and hope that one day I will achieve my aim in life to become a doctor.

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instil a love of learning.” Teachers are the foundation of a good society, they not only facilitate learning but also inspire children to follow their dreams and goals in life. This is why my aim in life is to become a teacher. My teachers have had a tremendous impact on my life, they taught me to believe in myself and follow my path no matter what. I wish to inculcate this belief and nurture it. Becoming a teacher can help me spread this knowledge and belief of believing in one’s ability to achieve their goals, to be individualistic and creative. I believe that I can be a good teacher because of my experience, humility, and caring nature. I possess all the skills and qualities that a promising teacher should possess. I hope one day I get the opportunity to follow my passion for teaching and educating the world in the future.

My aim in life is to become an engineer. Belonging to a family of engineers I have aspired to become a mechanical engineer like my father. Efforts anyone puts in becoming an engineer will be the best investment ever. I will face many challenges at work but it will open an array of opportunities for me around the world. My curiosity towards the engineering world and ambition to be an engineer is what drives me to study harder and more diligently. I have started to prepare myself for this journey from the school level. Engineering is all about creating new products and bringing up changes in the existing ones for better functioning. I have started participating in various Olympiads, competitions to level up my knowledge and turn my passion into a career. I hope one day I get the opportunity to follow my passion for engineering and bring a change in the future.

Introduction

It is very important to have an aim in life. A life without an aim is like a ship without a rudder. A man without an aim cannot succeed in life. He wanders like a lost sheep in the wilderness. Therefore, every young man should fix his aim in life and work hard to achieve it.

I have made up my mind to become a doctor and serve humanity. I know it is not an easy task but I am determined to achieve it. I have set my goals and I am working hard towards them. My parents are also very supportive and they are helping me achieve my dream.

I know that becoming a doctor requires a lot of dedication, hard work and sacrifice but I am ready for all of it. I am confident that I will be able to achieve my goal and make my parents proud.

Understanding the Meaning of Aim in Life

It is often said that everyone has an aim in life. An aim or a goal is what drives us to do better in life. It motivates us to work hard and gives us a sense of purpose.

A lot of people think that having an aim in life is not important. They believe that as long as they are happy and content with what they have, that is all that matters. While it is true that being happy and content are important, it is also important to have an aim in life.

An aim gives our lives direction and helps us focus on what we want to achieve. It gives us something to strive for and keeps us motivated. Without an aim, we may not be as successful as we could be and we may not live up to our full potential.

Some people know from a young age what their aim in life is, while others take longer to figure it out. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to figuring out your aim in life. What matters is that you find something that you are passionate about and that will make you happy.

If you are still trying to figure out your aim in life, don’t worry – there is plenty of time! Just keep exploring different options and eventually you will find something that feels right for you.

Reasons for Having an Aim

It is a well-known fact that a person without an aim is a person without a life. All the creatures in this universe have one or another specific aim. It is common for all things. As the human is the best creature among them all, he has been given a right to select what he wants to do in his life. The mindset of each and every person is of its own type. Therefore, his aim in life will also be different from others.

Life is God’s greatest blessing; nevertheless, if there is no purpose and aim, life is useless and meaningless. Every one of us is born with a mission. It is essential to have a goal in life. If you want to pursue something in your life, you must have a goal. Student life is the ideal time to set goals. A person with a defined objective outperforms someone who does not have a goal in life. And if you don’t know what you want, you’ll never be motivated to work hard. To live a good life and deal with challenges, we need a proper plan. As a result, it is critical for everyone to have a life goal.

my aim in life essay

What is the Aim?

In a generic term purpose or goal is an aim. A person in his childhood might want to be a famous astronaut or a movie star or a police officer or something like that.  Aim means to intend, to try, or to aspire. Each aim generally starts with a declaration of setting the goal, then breaking it into smaller pieces over a set timeline. Thus to achieve it one has to overcome many obstacles and setbacks from time to time.

Importance of aim in life:

There is a popular saying that a man without an aim is like an aim without a rudder. It means a ship without a rudder faces danger. Thus similarly a man without aim cannot reach towards his goal of life. He stumbles in his way of life.

So every person must have a definite aim. So, the aim of life is to give your life a purpose and meaning. Certainly, it is done by finding out what truly matters to you. Your purpose is to create more joy in life or to show others how you can live your life in the best possible manner.

How to find your Aim?

If you try to accomplish things that aren’t meant for you, that doesn’t offer you a sense of belonging and don’t provide you inner peace and happiness, you’re not in the correct field. You are not pursuing your goals and passions.

Everyone is unique in their own way. One may excel in academics while the other may be skilled in photography. Some people are born to aid the needy, others with bright brains, still others to pursue art and architecture, and still others simply write their way through life and become authors.

Simply close your eyes and think about something you appreciate the most on a larger scale, and that’s all there is to it. That is your life’s passion and goal. All you have to do is get closer to the part and shoot at it. By just following your passion, you can make your goal a reality.

Primary Aim in life:

A person can set the aim of his life by applying various parameters in life. Some of these maybe –

  • To live with a specific purpose and passion every day
  • To live for others by helping them.
  • To become a great father, mother, son or daughter.
  • To become a wildly successful entrepreneur and businessman
  • To live a healthy, active and fit life
  • To live with financial freedom in life.

Types of Aim:

Different people have different aims. Some people may want to become a doctor while others may want to start their own business. Likewise if engineering appeals, to some, the army may be the attraction for others. Some aim at becoming a teacher while social service or politics suits others. So different people adopt different aims according to their inclination or taste or perception about life.

How to Choose the right Aim of life?

It is the responsibility of the parents and the teachers to persuade their wards to select a profession according to their aptitude. Thus one can say that the right aim means right life and the wrong aim means wrong life. So, we should be very cautious while deciding on our aim.

Certainly, this is the most difficult problem that a young man faces is the selection of a profession.  If a person does not choose his aim rightly, he will be always misfitted in his life. Thus, the best aim would be for one in which one feels happy always and he can do something worthwhile. Also at the same time, he assures about bright prospects in life.

Everyone should set a goal that is personal to them and will always inspire them to reach new heights. Therefore, don’t follow the mob and mimic the ambitions of friends.

How to Achieve the Aim in Life?

We should never make wealth or power the end of our existence, whether we succeed or fail in accomplishing our aim. We must never chase the celebrity bubble. Our goal should be to achieve our set aim solely for our own good, for our own enjoyment and satisfaction.

Some non-avoidable points which must be remembered are-

  • Be Proactive
  • No More Negativity
  • Always be balanced
  • Fully Focused
  • Break it down
  • Embrace failure
  • Tell everyone
  • Get help and guidance
  • Track your progress
  • Visualize the end result
  • Reset the action plan based on feedback

We should also jot down and make a list of all our aims to be achieved. This activity will help you in a lot many ways. A few of them are:

  • It may help you live longer and be healthier.
  • If others ask, you will be an inspiration to them.
  • It will be a guide to the best version of yourself.
  • Your aim preferences will be prioritised based on your requirements.
  • It will serve as a progress tracker as you work your way up the achievement ladder.

Conclusion:

Thus it is a fact that setting an aim and acting to achieve it is very important for a successful life. Everyone must start working towards it. The timely execution of an action plan with a proactive attitude is the key to success. One of the best ways to stay motivated is by visualizing the change and likewise by achieving step by step milestones.

My essays combine real-life experiences with imagination

Rishika Dhakal

Momila Joshi is known for her poetry recitations and writings. Currently, she is the chairperson of Nepali Kala Sahitya Dot Com Pratishthan , a pioneering literary organisation in Nepal.

She has written two essay volumes and five poetry books, including ‘Paiyun Phulna Thalepachhi’ (1995), ‘Joonkiriharoo Orlirahechhan’ (1998), ‘Durgam Uchaima Phoolko Aandhi’ (2004), ‘After the Cherry Goes Blossoming’ (1996), and ‘Ishwar ko Adalat ma Outsider ko Bayan’ (2010).

In this conversation with the Post ’s Rishika Dhakal , Momila discusses her recent publication, ‘Prashna Haru ta Ajhai Baki Nai Rahechan’.

What is your recently published book ‘Prasna Haru Ta Ajhai Baaki Nai Rahechan…’ about?

Writing often revolves around the writer's personal experiences. However, many aspects of their lives remain untouched. These unexplored subjects should be explored. As essayist Shankar Lamichhane says, “The scattered topics must be addressed.”

This book, consisting of 23 essays, seeks to shed light on the often unnoticed and overlooked aspects of our daily lives. Each essay is filled with symbols that capture the emotions and subtleties of our existence.

In my other book, ‘An Outsider in the Court of God’, the protagonists affirm the justice of the divine. In my recent book, the same character experiences heaven but then returns to earth, finding the eternal bliss of heaven overwhelming. Eventually, the character realises that life should encompass both—the celebration of happiness and the acceptance of sadness.

My essays combine real-life experiences with the perspectives of an imagined character.

How did you come up with the book title?

The title ‘Prasna Haru Ta Ajhai Baaki Nai Rahechan…’ holds personal significance. I see words as images and symbols, much like how the word ‘house’ instantly brings to mind a structure. When you start with a short sentence, it can expand into a long one with multiple layers of meaning. Similarly, my extended title is a symbolic collage that encapsulates the unanswered questions of one’s life.

The title suggests that, regardless of our efforts, the ultimate truth about life can never be fully understood. As the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ states, truth is never absolute and may become more elusive as we get closer to it.

In other words, the mysteries of our existence will remain unresolved. However, these unanswered questions are a sign of being alive and conscious and being conscious means that there will always be questions about those unresolved mysteries.

The quest for answers continues, and life progresses. This ongoing search for answers and the acceptance of unresolved questions add to the beauty of life.

In the preface to your book, retired professor, Govinda Raj Bhattarai mentions that your writing style is reminiscent of Laxmi Prasad Devkota and Shankar Lamichhane. How have these literary figures influenced you?

I am fascinated by Devkota's poetic essays and Lamichhane's narrative style. My writings are influenced by Devkota's "table talk" approach to essay writing and Lamichhane's imaginative conversations with unseen entities.

As someone who enjoys poetry, my essays often blend elements of stories and poems. The works of Bertrand Russell, Francis Bacon, and Nirma Verma have also influenced me and my writing to some extent.

All writings are essentially acts of deconstruction, evolving from old forms into new ones, much like life itself. My essays explore new experiences and offer a fresh perspective on understanding life.

What is the objective of the “I” character of your essay? What does it want to convey?

Using the “I” character in my essays reflects a modern writing style focused on self-revelation. Thus, it is natural for the “I” character to be part of this self-expressive approach.

The “I” in my essays does not necessarily represent my personal experiences. Since everyone in society uses “I” to refer to themselves, its use in writing is primarily a stylistic choice.

From a contemporary perspective, the “I” character acts as a vehicle for expressing ideas through a personal address, similar to the styles of Devkota and Lamichhane.

This writing style embodies a desire to celebrate life, value oneself, and seek existential significance in every moment.

This style does not challenge the hidden aspects of one’s identity but rather expresses a desire to communicate with it, to endure the pain quietly, and to persist.

Unlike my previous book, which focused on my personal experiences, this book generalises people's social experiences to provide a broader perspective.

Your previous works indicate a strong inclination toward essay writing. What motivates you to choose essays as your preferred medium for writing?

Essays allow me to write poetically while maintaining a clear narrative structure. They offer the flexibility to express complex ideas and emotions with freedom and depth. This balance between lyrical expression and structured narrative makes essay writing the perfect medium for conveying my reflections.

What role do women characters play in your writing?

I see myself first as a person and then as a woman. As a human being, I am deeply affected by the socio-cultural experiences that impact women.

Our significance as women goes beyond the title of "woman" and is reflected in our various roles, such as the special duties associated with motherhood.

In my book, there is a chapter titled ‘Naayak Bhumikamaa Uni’. In this chapter, Nayak refers to a female character who embodies heroism.

I chose to call her that instead of a Naayika because the concept of Nayak in my essay represents a broader role that any woman can embody. Through Nayak , I have tried to portray that even women can be the centre of their world and create their focal points.

In a nutshell, the essay aims to convey that women’s existence should not be confined to merely being a support to men; they can also take centre stage while asserting their existence and capabilities.

By portraying women in such a way, what are you trying to tell society?

I want women to seek love, assert their existence, and claim their potential.

The message I want to convey to women is not to remain perpetually in a role of mere compassion. While compassion is a valuable trait, it is important to recognise opportunities that allow for diverse expressions of leadership, personal growth and innovation.

Devkota’s essay collections are a refined piece of writing, which enriches both the heart and the mind. Its composition and essence are both exceptional.

‘All We Think of Is Him’: Putting Names and Faces to Bangladesh Carnage

The partial lifting of a communications blackout is providing a picture of the young victims of a brutal crackdown on protesters. Thousands of others have been swept into jails.

  • Share full article

A woman consoles another woman, who is crying.

By Mujib Mashal and Saif Hasnat

Mujib Mashal reported from New Delhi, and Saif Hasnat from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

A part-time tutor, shot in the neck and killed. A journalist and young father, felled by a bullet to the head. A shopkeeper’s son, also fatally shot in the head.

When Bangladesh’s near-total communications blackout was partially lifted last week after a vicious crackdown on a student-led protest, one of the first things to emerge online was a digital yearbook of the dead.

It put names and faces to days of carnage unleashed by government forces seeking to quell what had begun as a peaceful demonstration against quotas that reserve sought-after government jobs for specific groups. Conservative estimates put the death toll at near 200. Thousands were injured; in one hospital in the capital, Dhaka, alone, more than 250 people required eye surgeries after being shot in the face by pellets or rubber bullets.

Most of the victims were young, in their 20s. They had been brought together on the streets by the bleak prospects of a stagnating economy . They were also fueled by anger at what they saw as government corruption, cronyism and impunity, as the country’s leaders dismissed their demand for a merit-based distribution of jobs.

Among the dead:

Hridoy Chandra Tarua, 23, was finishing a history degree and working as a tutor. His father is a carpenter, his mother a housemaid. On the days he returned home from college, he would wash clothes for his mother, grind spices on a stone slab and tell her it was just a matter of time before he got a job that would help ease her toil.

Hasan Mehdi, 35, was one of at least three journalists killed. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters, the oldest a little over 3 years old. “My little daughter has just learned how to say ‘Abu, Abu,’” his wife, Farhana Islam Poppy, said, referring to the word for “father.” “My daughters will never get to know who their dad really was.”

Mahmudul Rahman Shoikot, 20, was closing his family’s shop when the crackdown began. He was killed when he rushed to help some injured students, his sister, Sabrina Shabonti, said. At 6-foot-3, he towered over his two sisters, who teased him for how easily and profusely he would sweat during the hours he spent in the sun playing cricket. “When they went to bury him, he was so tall they struggled to fit him into the grave,” Ms. Shabonti said.

For the families of the victims, the immediate task after their deaths was to piece together what had happened to them, to search for their bodies when the phones were down and a curfew restricted movement, and to carry out last rites as the government was trying to hide the toll, bury the evidence and prevent gatherings that could perpetuate the anger.
