இயக்குநர் ஸ்ரீகார்த்திக் இயக்கத்தில் அமலா அக்கினேனி, ஷர்வானந்த், ரிது வர்மா, ரமேஷ் திலக், சதீஷ் மற்றும் நாசர் நடிப்பில் இன்று வெளியாகி உள்ள கணம் திரைப்படம் ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் நல்ல வரவேற்பை பெற்றுள்ளது.

இன்று நேற்று நாளை படத்தை போல டைம் மெஷின் கான்செப்ட்டில் உருவாகி உள்ள இந்த படம் எந்த இடத்தில் வேறுபட்டு ஸ்கோர் செய்கிறது என்பதை இங்கே பார்ப்போம்..

கணம் கதை என்ன

சிறு வயதில் விபத்தில் தனது அம்மாவை இழக்கும் ஆதிக்கு (ஷர்வானந்த்) டைம் டிராவல் மூலம் மீண்டும் தனது அம்மாவை (அமலா அக்கினேனி) சந்திக்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கிறது. எதிர்பாராத அந்த மரணத்தில் இருந்து தனது அம்மாவை காப்பாற்றுகிறாரா? இல்லையா? என்பது தான் கணம் படத்தின் கதை. டைம் டிராவால், சயின்ஸ் ஃபிக்‌ஷன் என வேறு கதைக்குள் செல்லாமல் மகனுக்கும் அம்மாவுக்கான பாசத்தை மட்டுமே இயக்குநர் மையப்படுத்தி இந்த படத்தை உருவாக்கி உள்ளார்.

திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் படத்தை போல

தனுஷின் திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் படத்தின் ஓப்பனிங் காட்சியிலும், சாலையில் சென்று கொண்டிருக்கும் கார் அப்பாவின் கவனக்குறைவால் விபத்தில் சிக்கி அம்மா, தங்கை உயிரிழப்பார்கள். அப்பா பிரகாஷ் ராஜுக்கும் தனுசுக்கும் ஆகாது. அதே போலவே இந்த படத்திலும், ஆரம்பத்தில் ஒரு கார் விபத்து நடக்கிறது. அதில், தனது தாயை இழக்கிறான் ஹீரோ, அப்பாவிடம் இவனும் பேசுவது கிடையாது. ஆனால், அந்த கம்பேரிசன் இங்கேயே முடிவடைகிறது. மீண்டும் தனது அம்மாவை சந்திக்க கிடைக்கும் வாய்ப்பை, சர்வானந்த் எப்படி பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்கிறான் என்கிற கோணத்தில் விரியும் கதை ரசிகர்களுக்கு இன்னொரு ஃபீல் குட் மூவியை பார்க்கும் வாய்ப்பை கொடுத்திருக்கிறது.

டைம் டிராவல்

விஞ்ஞானி ரங்கி குட்டப்பால் (நாசர்) 20 ஆண்டுகளாக போராடி கண்டுபிடித்த டைம் மெஷினில் நாயகன் ஆதியை பயணம் செய்ய அனுமதிக்கிறார். ஆனால், ஒரு கண்டிஷனோடு! நாயகன் அவன் மட்டும் செல்லாமல், தனது நண்பர்களான சதீஷ் மற்றும் ரமேஷ் திலக்கை உடன் அழைத்துச் செல்கிறார். அந்த இருவருக்கும் ஒரு சூப்பர் பேக் ஸ்டோரி அமைத்த இடத்தில் இயக்குநர் ஸ்கோர் செய்துள்ளார்.

அம்மாவாக அமலா

விபத்தில் உயிரிழந்த தனது அம்மாவை மீண்டும் சென்று சந்திக்கும் அந்த கணம் நெஞ்சை பிழிகிறது. 30 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு மீண்டும் தமிழ் படத்தில் நடித்துள்ள அமலா சரியான கம்பேக் கொடுத்துள்ளார். தனது சின்ன வயது கேரக்டரை ஹீரோ மற்றும் அவரது நண்பர்கள் சந்திப்பது, அவர்களின் மூலம் தங்களின் எதிர்காலத்தை நல்லபடியாக மாற்ற முயற்சிக்கும் காட்சிகள் எல்லாம் சூப்பர்.

அமலா, சர்வானந்த் நடிப்பு படத்திற்கு மிகப்பெரிய பலமாக அமைகிறது. நாயகி ரிது வர்மா குறைவான காட்சிகளில் வந்தாலும் நிறைவான நடிப்பைத் தந்துள்ளார். இயக்குநரின் ஸ்க்ரீன் பிளே மற்றும் சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகள் நல்லாவே வொர்க்கவுட் ஆகி உள்ளது. எடுத்துக் கொண்ட கதையில் கடைசி வரை சரியாக பயணிப்பது மற்றும் இடைவேளை முடிந்து வரும் அந்த ட்விஸ்ட், கிளைமேக்ஸ் இப்படித்தான் இருக்கும் என கெஸ் செய்து உட்கார்ந்திருந்தால், வேறு ஒரு கிளைமேக்ஸ் என ஏகப்பட்ட பிளஸ்கள் உள்ளன.

90ஸ் நாஸ்டால்ஜியா காட்சிகள், அந்த நிர்மா சோப்பு விளம்பரம் மட்டும் தானா? என கேள்விக் கேட்கத் தூண்டுகிறது. டைம் டிராவல் கதையில் லாஜிக்கை எல்லாம் பார்க்காமல், சென்டிமென்ட்டுக்கு மட்டுமே முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்திருப்பது சில இடங்களில் நெருடலை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. அடிக்கடி வரும் பாடல்கள் கதையை சற்றே ஸ்லோ டவுன் செய்கிறது உள்ளிட்ட சில குறைகளை தவிர்த்து விட்டு பார்த்தால் கணம் ரொம்ப நல்லாவே இருக்கு!

'Kanam' review: A big idea, a bigger heart

Time heals… But before we can get to the healing part, there are multiple stages that we all undergo. It is in one of these stages that filmmaker Shree Karthick decided to make his debut film, Kanam , which is an extension of his personal suffering, but not without the finesse of a well-made multi-genre film. It is interesting how Tamil cinema marries the sci-fi space with its quintessential masala tropes. We don’t often see pure genre films in Tamil, and Kanam is no different, but it isn’t a problem because the makers never intend to intellectualise this concept.

Kanam begins with a car accident, which has an interesting subversion. Right from this moment, Shree Karthick and team cleverly inject small doses of ingenuity into time-tested cliches that never once feel outdated. The film is about Aadhi (Sharwanand), who loses his mother (Amala Akkineni) at a very young age, and finds solace in music. However, his stage fright never allows him to break into the big leagues. His closest friends Kathir (Sathish) and Pandi (Ramesh Thilak), too have their own emotional baggage. The former is unable to find a partner to marry, and the latter has an inferiority complex connected to his unfinished school education and present profession as a real estate broker.

Shree Karthick uses one of the songs from Jakes Bejoy’s brilliant soundtrack to establish the characters of the three friends and their lives. Although, Aadhi’s story carries more emotional heft than the others, full points to the makers for giving the usually neglected ‘hero’s friends’ a fulfilling personal character arc. Throw in Nasser, his eclectic time machine, and we are in for a ride riddled with a bunch of existential questions that are treated rather lightly.

It is imperative that a time-travel film has to follow the rules ascertained in that world. Kanam too has a set of simple rules for a simple sci-fi concept. However, it is so simple that even when Nasser explains time travel to the trio, there is hardly any resistance from them. They aren’t really bothered about the ramifications of time travel, and this nonchalance is actually disconcerting. How can someone not stop and ask questions when the idea of time travel is put forth? This lack of wonderment is detrimental to the narrative, which replaces scientific jargon with sentimental dialogues. But, a lot of these missteps, including the rules of the world not really being followed to a T, are overshadowed by the universality of the sentiments, and the performances of the lead cast.

Despite limited screentime, Amala, who is just known as ‘Amma’, is the soul of the film. She is the archetype of a doting mother, and it is interesting how she is not given a particular name. She could be anybody’s amma, and that is the universality that Shree Karthick wants Kanam to cater to. The three kids — Jay, Hitesh and Nithya — playing the younger versions of Sharwanand, Sathish, and Ramesh Thilak are very sincere in their roles and raise the standards high enough to ensure it isn’t a walk in the park for their adult versions.

Ramesh stands out with his earnestness and establishes his credentials as an actor who can be given a full-fledged role. Ritu Varma is given a role with very limited scope, but she makes the best of it. Also, points to the writing for giving Ravi Raghavendra, who plays Ravichandran, the father of Aadhi, a solid character arc. He has a penchant for keeping things clean, and knowing the antecedents of this habit is one of the many emotional highs of Kanam . While the central conflict heavily works in favour of the film, it is these nifty side touches that warm the heart a bit more. In fact, the reason for Nasser to go back in time, and the ambiguity existing in his life is a fascinating addition to Kanam that might seem a largely simple amma-sentiment film.

Just like how Shree Karthick’s debut film is a way of catharsis for the young filmmaker, this feeling is extended to the audience too. Watching Kanam , one gets transported to the wondrous yet taxing world of ‘What Ifs’. We have all once walked through these hallows to find answers to questions we wish we never had. Throughout all time-travel films, it has always been about one single want of the protagonist, which more often than not revolves around love… and regret, in any form. Shree Karthick and team give us a bunch of relatable characters that connect with us on such a deep level that we begin to envision ourselves as them.

In fact, even during the runtime of the film, whenever I found time from wiping my tears or sporting a wide smile, I was traversing multiple timelines in my head. However, there is also the fear that too much is left to chance, and we aren’t sure if a course correction in our past is the best way forward. All we have is the present, and Shree Karthick has designed a film that might seem like a conversation with time but is a deeply introspective piece, which urges us to make peace with our decisions and where life has brought us. We know time heals… and films like Kanam remind us that art heals too.

கணம் Review: நாஸ்டால்ஜியாவுடன் ஒரு எமோஷனல் டைம் ட்ராவல்

வாழ்க்கையில் செகண்ட் சான்ஸ் என்பது இப்போது நாம் வாழும் இந்த 'கணம்' தான் என்கிறது படம்.

இசைக்கலைஞராக இருக்கிறார் ஆதி (ஷர்வானந்த்). வீட்டு ப்ரோக்கராக இருக்கிறார் பாண்டி (ரமேஷ் திலக்). திருமணத்துக்கு தீவிரமாக பெண் தேடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் கதிர் (சதீஷ்). பள்ளியிலிருந்தே இணைப்பிரியா தோழர்களான இவர்கள் மூவருக்கும், தனித்தனியே தேவைகளும் விருப்பங்களும் உண்டு. ஆனால், அதை அடைய அவர்களுக்கு காலம் வேலியிட்டு வைத்துள்ளது. இந்த சூழலில் காலம் கடக்கும் எந்திரத்துடன் வரும் ஒருவர், நீங்கள் கடந்த காலத்துக்கு சென்று உங்கள் தேவைகளை நிறைவேற்ற நான் உதவி செய்கிறேன் என்கிறார்.

அத்தோடு ஒரு சிறிய உதவியையும் முன்வைக்கிறார். அதனை ஒப்புக்கொள்ளும் இந்த மூவரும் கடந்த காலத்துக்குள் நுழைகின்றனர். அப்படி நுழைந்தவர்கள் தங்கள் தேவைகளையும், விருப்பங்களையும் நிறைவேற்றினார்களா? இல்லையா? மீண்டும் நிகழ்காலத்திற்கு அவர்களால் வர முடிந்ததா? வாழ்க்கையில் அவர்களுக்கு கிடைத்த இரண்டாது வாய்ப்பு கைகொடுத்ததா? என்பது தான் 'கணம்' படத்தின் திரைக்கதை.

கடந்த காலத்திற்கு சென்று நம் வாழ்வில் தற்போது நிகழ்ந்துள்ள பல அசாம்பாவிதங்களை மாற்றி அமைக்க வேண்டும் என்ற விருப்பம் நம் எல்லோருக்குள்ளும் இருக்கிறது. அப்படி கடந்த காலத்திற்குள் நுழைந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்ற நம் எண்ணத்துக்கு திரைவடிவம் கொடுத்து ரசிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் ஸ்ரீகார்த்திக். 98 காலக்கட்டத்தில் நடக்கும் நாஸ்டால்ஜி சம்பவங்கள் படம் பார்க்கும் பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு, குறிப்பாக 90ஸ் கிட்ஸ்களுக்கு நன்றாகவே கனெக்ட் ஆகிறது. வாஷிங் பவுடர் நிர்மா விளம்பரத்தை திரையிலிருப்பவர்கள் ரசித்து பார்ப்பது போல நாமும் ரசித்து மகிழ்கிறோம். அப்படியான அழகான காட்சிகளை தொகுத்து நம்மையும் டைம் ட்ராவல் செய்ய வைத்த விதம் ஈர்க்கிறது.

தமிழ் சினிமாவை பொறுத்தவரை டைம் ட்ராவல் பாணி படங்கள் ஏற்கெனவே வந்துள்ளன. பொதுவாக ஒரு படம் அதன் பாணியிலான கடந்த கால படங்களை பிரதியேடுக்காமல், சுவாரஸ்யமான புதுமையான காட்சிகள் வைப்பதன் மூலம் தான் அது தனித்துவம் பெறுகிறது. அப்படி இந்தப்படத்தில் ரசிக்கவும், கவனிக்கவும், சிரிக்கவும் காட்சிகள் பல காட்சிகள் இருப்பதால் ஒரு ஃப்ரஷ்ஷான திரையனுபவத்துடன் தனித்து நிற்கிறது கணம்.

வளர்ந்த ஒருவர் சிறிய வயதான தன்னையே நேருக்கு நேர் பார்க்கும் காட்சிகள் புனைவுலகில் புதுமை சேர்த்தது. 3 பேருக்கும் தனித்தனியே ஒரு கதையமைப்பு, அதலிருக்கும் சிறிய சிறிய தருணங்கள் என ரசிக்க நிறைய காட்சிகள் உண்டு.

இது ஒருபுறமிருந்தாலும், படத்தின் கருவான தாய்க்கும் - மகனுக்கும் இடையிலான எமோஷனல் கனெக்ட், 'ஒருமுறை என்ன பாரம்மா' பாடல் உணர்ச்சிகளை உசுப்பிவிட கைகொடுத்தது. அம்மா கதாபாத்திரத்தின் மூலம் 30 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு பிறகு திரையில் ரீ என்ட்ரி கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் நடிகை அமலா. ஆனால் அவர் நடிப்பில் ஏதோ ஒன்று மிஸ்ஸிங்! மிகைநடிப்பையும், சில இடங்களில் நடிப்பின் போதாமையையும் உணர முடிந்தது. ஷர்வானந்த் க்ளோசப் சீன்களில் அழும் காட்சிகள், தாயின் இழப்புடன் ஒருவித மென் சோகத்தை சுமந்திருக்கும் முகம் என கவனம் பெறுகிறார்.

ரமேஷ் திலக் படத்திற்கு படம் தன்னை மேம்படுத்திக்கொள்கிறார். இந்த படத்தில் அவருடையே மிரட்டல் டோன், உடல்மொழி, ஒன்லைனர்கள் என நினைவில் தேங்கும் நடிப்பை கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். சதிஷ் இம்முறை இரட்டை அர்த்த வசனங்கள், உருவகேலியில்லாமல், காட்சியையொட்டி வரும் வசனங்கள் மூலமாக சிரிக்க வைத்தது சிறப்பு. (இதையே மற்ற படங்களிலும் தொடரலாம்). தவிர, ரித்து வர்மா, நாசர், எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர் தங்களுடைய நடிப்பில் கவனம் பெறுகின்றனர்.

ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக படம் பார்த்து முடித்ததும் நாம் வாழும் இந்த நிமிடத்தின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை நெற்றிப்பொட்டில் அறைந்தார் போல நன்றாகவே புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிகிறது. உறவுகளின் இன்மையை காலம் கடந்து தேடி பயனில்லை. அந்தந்த நிமிடங்களிலேயே கொண்டாட வேண்டிய தேவையையும் படம் உணர்த்துகிறது. படம் முடியும் போது இயக்குநர் தன்னுடைய பெயருக்கு கீழ் 'சன் ஆஃப்' என்று அவருடைய தாயின் பெயரை சேர்த்து குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளது, தாய் பாசத்தையொட்டியே இந்த டைம் ட்ராவல் கதையை அவர் வடிவமைத்திருந்ததை புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிகிறது. சில இடங்களில் பொறுமையாக நகரும் திரைக்கதை, ஓவர் டோஸான சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகள், விறுவிறுப்பின் போதாமையை உணர முடிந்தது. பாடலாசிரியர் உமா தேவியின் வரிகளில் 'ஒருமுறை என்ன பாரம்மா' பாடல் திரையரங்கிலிருந்து வெளியே வந்த பிறகும் மனதில் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. ஜேக்ஸ் பிஜோயின் பின்னணி இசை காட்சிகளுக்கான உணர்வனுபவத்தையும், சுஷித் சாரங்கின் கேமிரா கால வெளியின் மாற்றங்களை அழகாக பதிவு செய்திருந்தது.

மொத்தத்தில் டைம் ட்ராவல் கதையை எமோஷனலாக கொண்டு சென்று, ரசிப்பதற்கான காட்சிகளை கொடுத்ததன் மூலம் கணம் இன்னும் கனம் பெறுகிறது. படத்தில் சொல்லவரும் மெசேஜூம் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறது.

Kanam Movie Review (2022)

Shree karthick's 'oke oka jeevitham' / 'kanam', with sharwanand and amala akkineni, is a beautifully written time-travel drama.

Shree Karthick's time-travel drama is interestingly titled. In Telugu, it is called Oke Oka Jeevitham, which can be extrapolated to mean we have only one life, this life, to live. In Tamil, the film is called Kanam, which means moment, as in: this present moment is all we have. The theme in other words, is time, and what better way to understand how time affects us than through a time machine, which allows us to revisit the past… or see the future. Like the Dhanush character in Thiruchitrambalam, Aadhi (Sharwanand) is someone who wants to go back to a time before his mother's death changed his life forever. But he cannot – at least, not until he gets access to that time machine. So he sits around with his friends with a perennially mopey face. These friends are also his roomies. They are played by Vennela Kishore and Priyadarshi in the Telugu version, and by Sathish and Ramesh Thilak in Tamil.

The most impressive aspect of this film is the writing. Shree Karthick dots every i, crosses every t. Take the instance of how the time machine inventor, played by Nasser, comes into the picture. One of Aadhi's roomies is a broker, and we get enough instances of his life as a broker – including his feelings about the job – before he gets a call from this scientist. An entire career is established in quick strokes. Or take Aadhi's girlfriend, played by Ritu Varma. She is concerned that his musical career isn't taking off, but more importantly, we get to see a maternal side to her in a scene where she tends to three children. The "mother" Aadhi misses and yearns for is probably right in front of him. Or take the way Aadhi's relationship with his father in the later stages plays out without any dialogue. Because none is needed.

Why isn't Aadhi's musical career taking off? The reason is connected to his mother, and it could also be seen as a metaphor for his inability to move on. He was this way as a boy; he remains that way as a man. The two roomies aren't just random friends who crack jokes to liven up the narrative because the protagonist is so serious. Like Aadhi, both of them have unresolved issues – issues that may be solved through that time machine. And the character of Amala Akkineni, who plays Aadhi's mother, is written as the kind of loving mother who is very physical with her affection – so it makes all the more sense how much Aadhi misses her. A late scene where Amala understands, in a flash, something that would have taken pages of exposition, is a real beauty.

Shree Karthick stages scenes nicely, with minimum fuss – and he takes his time. But while this approach works on a scene by scene basis, the film, as a whole, seems to take its time. And this becomes a small issue, because – with the exception of a misguided and tonally-off chase scene involving cops – this is a mostly eventless movie. The focus is on emotions, rather than on twists or frantic time-travel adventures. There's a certain coolness, a sense of detachment that happens when a film is too "classy" for its own good. With this premise, I could have used a few more emotional highs – a missing-child incident, for example, goes on and on, but with the same beats being repeated. But these are minor complaints in such a warm-hearted story, filled with warm and knowing performances, especially by the three children. Best of all is the understated – actually, unstated – message. Time changes us, and the only thing we can do is be grateful for the present.

'டைம் மிஷின், டைம் டிராவல்' எனப்படும் கடந்த காலம் மற்றும் எதிர்காலத்திற்குச் செல்லும் அதீத கற்பனை கதைகளும் சயின்ஸ் பிக்ஷனில்தான் அடங்கும். இதற்கு முன்பு 'இன்று நேற்று நாளை, 24' ஆகிய படங்கள் வந்துள்ளன. அந்த வரிசையில் தற்போது வெளிவந்துள்ள படம் 'கணம்'.

ஒரு அறிவியில் புனைவுக் கதையில் ஒரு அம்மா சென்டிமென்ட்டை இந்த அளவிற்கு இணைத்து ரசனையுடனும், நெகிழ்ச்சியுடனும் சொல்ல முடியுமா என வியக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் ஸ்ரீகார்த்தி. அவருடைய அறிமுகப்படத்திலேயே இப்படி ஒரு சோதனையான முயற்சியில் தைரியமாக இறங்கி வெற்றியும் பெற்றிருக்கிறார். அம்மாவை இழந்தவர்களுக்கு, அதிலும் சிறு வயதிலேயே அம்மாவை இழந்தவர்களுக்கு அந்த வலி என்றும் தீராத ஒன்று. அம்மாவை மீண்டும் பார்க்க மாட்டோமா, அம்மா மீண்டும் நமக்கு வந்து அன்பைப் பொழிய மாட்டாரா என்று ஏங்க வைக்கும். அந்த வலி இயக்குனர் ஸ்ரீ கார்த்திக்குக்கும் அதிகமாக இருந்திருக்கிறது. அதனால்தான் இப்படி ஒரு நெகிழ்வான படத்தை அவரால் கொடுக்க முடிந்துள்ளது. சிறு வயதிலேயே அம்மாவை இழந்தவர் ஷர்வா. சிறு வயது நண்பர்கள் சதீஷ், ரமேஷ் திலக் ஆகியோருடன் ஒன்றாக அறையில் இருக்கிறார். இசைக் கலைஞராக வேண்டும் என்பது அவரது லட்சியம். இந்த சூழ்நிலையில் டைம் மிஷின் பற்றி ஆராய்ச்சி செய்துள்ள விஞ்ஞானியான நாசரை சந்திக்க வேண்டிய சூழல் வருகிறது. அம்மா ஏக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் ஷர்வா நாசர் கண்டுபிடித்துள்ள டைம் மிஷின் மூலம் தனது அம்மா இறந்த 1998ம் ஆண்டிற்குச் சென்று விபத்தில் இறந்த அம்மா அமலாவிவின் மரணத்தைத் தடுக்க முயற்சிக்கிறார். அவருடன் நண்பர்கள் சதீஷ், ரமேஷ் திலக்கும் அந்த கடந்த காலத்திற்குப் பயணிக்கிறார்கள். அம்மாவின் விபத்தை ஷர்வா தடுத்தாரா இல்லையா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. டைம் மிஷின் கதைகளுக்கான திரைக்கதை மிகவும் முக்கியம். ரசிகர்களை எந்த விதத்திலும் குழப்பத்தில் ஆழ்த்தக் கூடாது. இந்தப் படத்தில் மிகத் தெளிவான திரைக்கதையை எழுதியிருக்கிறார் ஸ்ரீகார்த்திக். 2019லிருந்து இளைஞர்களாக இருக்கும் ஷர்வா, சதீஷ் ரமேஷ் திலக் 1998க்குச் செல்ல, 1998ல் சிறுவர்களாக இருக்கும் அவர்கள் 2019க்குள் எதிர்பாராமல் வர எந்த குழப்பமும் இல்லாமல் நகர்கிறது படம். 'எங்கேயும் எப்போதும்' படத்திற்குப் பின் நீண்ட இடைவெளிக்குப் பிறகு ஷர்வா தனது இயல்பான நடிப்பால் கவர்கிறார். அம்மா இல்லாத ஏக்கத்திலிருந்து கடந்த காலத்தில் அம்மாவை சந்திக்கச் சென்று அவரைப் பார்த்ததும் அவருக்கு ஏற்படும் அந்த உணர்வு நம்மையும் தொற்றிக் கொள்ளும். எப்படியாவது அம்மாவை மரணத்திலிருந்து காப்பாற்றிவிட வேண்டும் என்று துடிக்கிறார். உணர்வுகளின் குவியலால் இருக்கும் படத்தில் அவரது நடிப்பு தூணாக இருந்து படத்தைத் தாங்குகிறது. 30 வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு தமிழில் மீண்டும் நடிக்க வந்துள்ளார் அமலா. 90களின் இளைஞர்களுக்கு அமலாவை அம்மா கதாபாத்திரத்தில் பார்ப்பதற்கு கொஞ்சம் வருத்தமாக இருக்கிறது என்பது தியேட்டர்களில் தெரிகிறது. ஆனாலும், அந்தக் காலத்தில் இருந்து இந்தக் காலம் வரையிலும் அவருடைய அந்த அன்புச் சிரிப்பு மட்டும் மாறவேயில்லை. ஷர்வாவின் ஜோடியாக சில காட்சிகளில் வந்தாலும் முக்கியத்துவமான காட்சிகளில் இருக்கிறார் நாயகி ரிது வர்மா. சதீஷ், ரமேஷ் திலக் இருவரும் நகைச்சுவைக்காகச் சேர்க்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இவர்களை வைத்து இன்னும் காமெடியை சேர்த்திருக்கலாம். ஆனால், இயக்குனர் சென்டிமென்ட் போதும் என நினைத்திருக்கிறார். விஞ்ஞானியாக நாசர், அமலாவின் கணவராக ரவி ராகவேந்தர். சிறு வயது ஷர்வா, சதீஷ், ரமேஷ் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் நடித்துள்ள மாஸ்டர் ஜெய், ஹிதேஷ், நித்யா ஆகியோரும் பொருத்தமான தேர்வு. ஜேக்ஸ் பிஜாய் பின்னணி இசையில் அம்மா பாச உணர்களை தன் இசையால் மேலும் கடத்துகிறார். சுஜித் சாரங் ஒளிப்பதிவு, ஸ்ரீஜித் சாரங் படத்தொகுப்பு இயக்குனருக்கு பலமாகக் கை கொடுத்திருக்கிறது. இடைவேளை வரை சில காட்சிகளின் நீளம் அதிகம். இடைவேளைக்குப் பின்பு படம் விறுவிறுப்பாக நகர்கிறது. ஒரு மாறுபட்ட படத்தைப் பார்க்கும் திருப்தி ரசிகர்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கும். கணம் - கனமான 'கணம்'

KANAM MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Kanam is a film written and directed by Shree Karthick and bankrolled by SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures. The film has Sharwanand and Ritu Varma in the lead roles while Amala Akkineni, Nasser, Sathish, Ramesh Thilak and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by Jakes Bejoy, and the cinematography is done by Sujith Sarang. 

Aadhi (Sharwanand), Pandi (Ramesh Thilak), and Kathir (Sathish) are three friends whose lives are miserable in their own ways. Aadhi is a singer, but refuses to put out his work to the public. Kathir struggles to find a suitable bride for marriage, and Pandi hates his profession of being a broker. They embark on a time travel journey with the help of a scientist named Paul (Nasser), in order to set their past right, which in turn will change their future. However, a small mishap occurs during the time travel, and how they escape it forms the rest of the plot. 

One can broadly classify films into two types. The first type being one where the film has loads of twists and turns, and is highly unpredictable. It doesn't have to be a thriller, but can also be a romantic drama, where the unpredictability would be about how the relationship/character arcs are going to progress. On the other hand, you have films where you know exactly what is going to happen, and yet you remain glued to the screen because of the emotional value, the honest writing, and the beautiful performances. 

And Kanam falls into the latter category. You might find flaws with the film, yet the film is so delightful that it makes you forgive them immediately. It's like the difference between ordering biriyani and curd rice at a new restaurant. You are anxious to know how the biriyani tastes, but curd rice is always a safe, comfort food. 

The best place to start talking about the film would be the performances. Sharwanand is earnest as Aadhi, and his chemistry with Ramesh Thilak and Sathish works out really well. And the star of the show is Amala Akkineni who plays the mother of Aadhi. Despite being a grounded character, her screen presence makes the film extremely likeable. She's almost like a silent superstar. 

The writing of the film is very basic and simple. It never complicates itself under any circumstance, and each scene conveys the emotion it wants with top-notch clarity. The humour through Ramesh Thilak and Sathish's dialogues, especially towards the interval, works out big time. 

Technically, the VFX during time travel looks convincing and bolsters the film's engagement. At no point is anything overdone, and at no point does the film try to be over-ambitious. The background score by Jakes Bejoy aids the film at its most crucial junctures, and elevates the film several notches higher. Sreejith and Sujith Sarang - the editor and cinematographer respectively, work in tandem to deliver a visually appealing product. 

Overall, the message it tells us is conveyed in a non-preachy way, and the point is driven home. Despite a second half which might seem long for a small section of audience, the film's unsaturated sweetness makes this a wonderful watch. The performances and music also take this several notches higher. Do not miss this!

Kanam Movie Review

Mother sentiment is a classic angle of Indian cinema. It has been quite a while Tamil cinema has had a film utterly dedicated to mother son relationship. In comes director Shree Karthick’s Kanam to end the drought. The drama is about a budding musician who along with his two friends travels back in time to alter the death of his mother. Actor Sharwanand who was last seen on screens in Tamil in the romantic drama JK Enum Nanbanin Vaazhkai is back on screens with his science fiction film Kanam. Actress Ritu Varma has essayed the female lead role in the movie. So, how has the science fiction movie Kanam come out? Will it be a memorable comeback entertainer for Sharwanand in Tamil? To know that let us get into the movie review.

Kanam opens in 1998 to a time travel experiment conducted by two scientists Rangi Kutta Paul (Nassar) and Michael Roy (Yog Japee) on their newly discovered time machine. The machine fails, and Michael Roy loses his life in the process. The scene cuts to 2019, where we are introduced to Adhi (Sharwanand), an aspiring musician whose performance anxiety predicament keeps him from pursuing his dream. His life is made tolerable by his friends Paandi (Ramesh Thilak) and Kathir (Sathish) who have their fair share of problems in life to deal with. On one occasion, Paandi who makes a living as a real estate agent gets a call from Paul to find him a house. Paandi takes Adhi and Kathir with him. There Adhi stumbles up on vintage boxes dated back to 1998. He finds it weird as the boxes are dated just a day before his mother (Amala Akkineni) died. He shares it with his friends. Paul eavesdrops the conversation. 

He makes a proposition to Adhi. Explaining about his time travel experiment, he tells him he could save his mother, and seeks his help in saving the life of his dear friend Michael Roy by averting the experiment from happening. Paandi and Kathir join Adhi on the mission to try and alter their lives for better. They set up the time machine in a dilapidated house. Paul elaborates on rules and mechanism of time travel. He then sets them up on an expedition back in time to 1 st of march 1998. Arriving at the set date, they try to acquaint themselves with their younger self. Adhi connects with his mother, Kathir aims to build a friendship between his younger self and Sita, while Paandi works on getting his younger version to focus on studies. In an unexpected turn of events, the younger versions of them travel to 2019 using the time machine while the adults get stuck in 1998. Will Adhi, Paandi and Kathir find a solution to make it back to 2019, and how they unravel the complex situation, is what makes the rest of the flick. 

Kanam is anchored on the evergreen ‘Amma Sentiment’ that clicks well more often than not. Director Shree Karthick bakes a poignant film in Kanam. But he does not wish his film to just be confined within the emotional drama spectrum. So, he gets a tad creative. And spins a time travel concept, tosses in a few life lessons, and peppers them with 90’s nostalgia toppings. He seems to have a clear understanding of what he wants his film to be, and does not pretend otherwise. He does not aim to pull off a brain bending sci-fi movie. But rather seeks to craft an enjoyable emotional drama. In which he succeeds to a large extent. 

Largely, movies made with Amma sentiment as their nuclei could not escape from getting histrionic. Even with Amma sentiment as its core, Kanam does not get melodramatic. Director Shree Karthick is cautious to not go overboard and milk the emotions of the audience. He ensures to maintain the light-hearted tune. He does that smartly by engineering three other sub plots. Taking off the focus away from the main plot at regular intervals. Even more refreshing aspect about Kanam is, these sub-plots are not just some filler portions, but interestingly a backstory for the friends of the lead hero, who are usually treated with great disdain in cinema. On the down side, nostalgia is built in the form of the set-up during the period, and popular tv commercials from the 90’s. Leaving us with a feeling of discontent. Little effort here would have gone a long way. Also, after a certain point, the drama gets flat and predictable. From where it starts to lose our attention gradually, and almost completely well before the ending. 

Actor Sharwanand has got under the skin of his character. But the actor overplays here and there in a few portions. Veteran actress Amala Akkineni makes her presence felt. Actress Ritu Varma’s role does not have much to carry forward the proceedings. Nonetheless, she has done justice to her part. Actors Ramesh Thilak, and Sathish are impactful but inconsistent in their task. Veteran actor Nassar serves the purpose for which he was brought on board. Actor M S Bhaskar makes an impact even in a limited screen time. Actor Ravi Raghavendra is operational. Actor Yog Japee is adequate. Actor Vaiyapuri is functional. Actors Jay Adithya, Hitesh, Nithyaraj, Madan Kumar, TSR, KPY Bala, Abhishek Kumar, and Arjunan have done their job well. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them. 

On the technical front, music director Jakes Bejoy’s songs are not good but are not really bad either. His background score adds value to the film. Cinematographer Sujith Sarang has covered the drama from the best vantage points possible. His visuals are colorful, and aid in setting the poignant tone of the flick. Editor Sreejith Sarang has put his scissors at the right spots to cut out the junk clips enhancing the work of his colleague. 

On the whole, Sharwanand’s Kanam rekindles the staunch ‘Amma Sentiment’ genre of the late 80’s but might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

கதையின் கரு: ஒரு விபத்தில் இளம் வயதில் தாயை இழந்து அதில் இருந்து மீள முடியாமல் தவிக்கிறார் ஹீரோ ஷர்வானந்த்(ஆதி). 20 வருடங்களாக அதிலிருந்து மீள முடியாமல் தவிக்கும் நிலையில், காலச்சக்கரத்தின் மூலம் மீண்டும் சென்று  தாயை மீட்க அவருக்கு ஒரு வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது.தன் கடந்த காலத்திற்கு சென்று தன் தாயை மீட்டாரா ஷர்வானந்த் என்பதே திரைக்கதை.

மகனின் இசை மேல் உள்ள ஆசைக்கு துணைபுரியும் தாயாக, மகனுக்காக கணவருடன் சண்டையிடும் தாயாக, மகனை தொலைத்து விட்டு தேடும் காட்சிகளில் ரியல் தாயாகவே மாறிவிட்டார். சதீஷ் மற்றும் காமெடி நன்றாக ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியுள்ளது. சிட் ஷ்ரிராம் குரலில் பேஜாய்யின் மெய்மறக்கச் செய்யும் இசையில் 'ஒருமுறை என்னை பாரம்மா ' பார்வையாளர்கள் கண்களைக் கலங்கச் செய்தது‌.ஹீரோவின் பாசம் நிறைநத் கண்டிப்பான தந்தையாக ரவிசந்தர் தனது கதாப்பாத்திரத்திற்கு நியாயம் செய்திருக்கிறார்.

கோமாளி திரைப்படத்தின் சாயல் சில காட்சிகளில் தெரிகிறது. ஹீரோ மற்றும் நண்பர்கள் இருபது வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு சென்று, தங்களின் பள்ளிப்பருவ நினைவலைகளை திரும்ப பெறும் காட்சிகள் இனிமையாக இருந்தது. குறிப்பாக அவர்கள் சிறுவயதில் செய்த பிழைகளை, அருகிலிருந்து அவர்களே திருத்தும் காட்சிகள் சுவாரசியமாக இருந்தது.

Kanam Movie Review: Sharwanand, Amala Akkineni's time-travel film feels like a warm hug on a cold day

Tamil cinema has had very little success with the concept of time travel. Vishnu Vishal's Indru Netru Naalai tried to explain the scientific concept of time travel in a way that even a layperson could understand. Now, director Shree Karthick brings you Kanam, another Tamil film that has time travel at its core.

Aadhi (Sharwanand), Pandi (Ramesh Thilak) and Kathir (Sathish) have been friends since childhood. Pandi is a real-estate broker and through him, the trio meets scientist Paul (Nasser), who invents a time travel machine. Since Aadhi is grieving the loss of his mother (Amala Akkineni) for 20 years, Paul suggests time travel so he can see his mom once again. The decision was a no-brainer for Aadhi. Pandi and Kathir have their reasons as well. Pandi wants his younger self to concentrate on his studies so he could have a better shot at life. As for Kathir, his classmate Savitha had tried to win his love in school, but, Kathir paid no heed. Now, all grown up, Savitha is married to another classmate. Now, Kathir wants to take a chance, to go back in time and woo Savitha.

Director Shree Karthick dedicated Kanam (Oke Oka Jeevitham) to his late mother. And we see why as the film progresses. Aadhi is an aspiring musician but suffers from social anxiety. His mother was his source of support and confidence. But, just when he felt ready to face his fear, he loses his mother in an accident. His anxiety gets worse. Though Aadhi's girlfriend (Ritu Varma) tries to be the comforting factor in his life, it's not the same. The whole dynamic between Aadhi's relationship with his mother and his girlfriend explains how people deal with grief and anxiety disorders.

Kanam is thoughtful in its approach to dealing with one's emotions. There is no unnecessary glorification or dramatic music to elevate a scene. The emotions are as real as they get. And that's where Kanam stands apart. The concept of time travel is not just a visiting card for Kanam. It travels throughout the story and in a compelling manner.

However, there are certain sequences that reek of melodrama. But, these flaws are subverted by the emotional arcs of the lead characters. And the climax about the inevitability of fate is relevant in this day and age.

Sharwanand seemed at ease playing the role of Aadhi and his sequences with his on-screen mother Amala Akkineni are heartwarming. In fact, when he travels back in time to taste his mom's tea and food, it feels like a warm hug on a cold day. Ramesh Thilak and Sathish as Aadhi's friends were perfect for their roles as well. Nasser, as the scientist, is exceptional with his expressions as always. Ritu Varma gets a brief role, but this is a cakewalk for her.

Kanam evokes nostalgia as it takes us back to the 90s. Watch Kanam for its simplicity.

‘Kanam/ Oke Oka Jeevitham’ movie review: Sharwanand’s time-travel film works wonders with its emotional beats

A delightful debut for director shree karthick, who gives us a compelling film that is also an endearing tribute to his late mother.

Even before the birth of cinema, artists and storytellers have always seen humankind's endless fascination with time as a great narrative tool. The human condition exists due to the rigid linearity of time, and time-travel titles from recent years like Dark , Indru Netru Naalai , Russian Doll and Tenet continue to prove that it's a sub-genre that can offer a plethora of possibilities to a storyteller. Debutant director Shree Karthick's Kanam ( Oke Oka Jeevitham in Telugu) is one such attempt that refrains from using time travel as a mere gimmick. The play with time is intended to drive forward a bigger point here: the inevitability of fate.

Three friends, Aadhi (Sharwanand), Pandi (Ramesh Tilak), and Kadhir (Sathish) get a second chance at life after a chance encounter with a reclusive scientist Paul (Nasser), who offers to send them back 20 years in time in return for a favour. It's a no-brainer decision for Aadhi, a man who struggles to move on from the death of his mother (Amala Akkineni). Aadhi wants to go back in time and save his mother from her untimely death. Though the film treats the causes of Pandi and Kadhir in a light-hearted manner, it never patronises their struggles; Pandi wants his younger self to focus more on education so as to not end up as a real estate broker, while Kadhir wishes to go back and woo his classmate. To them, these quests are as life-changing as Aadhi's.

Throughout the film, you might think of some unconvincing reasonings and logical fallacies. Why didn't Paul attempt this mission in 20 long years? Why didn't he tell them about the repercussions of time travel? Or, how did a certain character escape from a certain place? The screenplay too, a straightforward one with little or no subversion, has its share of cliched sequences. However, Kanam is a film which makes you all the more forgiving of these flaws. There's also an attempt right from the beginning — a conscious one, I assume — to tell us that this isn't a film to look out for all those things. Kanam lends you a warm comforter, lets you revel in some of its well-written heartwarming moments, and proceeds to tell a tear-jerker of a story about a mother and a son. The film banks on its emotional beats, and it works beautifully.

An emotionally-driven story as such isn't entirely new to us and like many others, the melodrama might come across as a tad too much in some circumstances. However, for the major parts of the film, the background music and acting elevate the writing and, once again, you are so enchanted by it all that you end up forgiving the minor flaws. Also, nobody knows how someone will react when they see their late mother after 20 years, or the emotional heft of going back to one's school days and meeting their old selves. Moments like when Aadhi once again gets to relish the taste of his mother's cooking are... magical to say the least.

After playing a cheerful role in Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu , we see Sharwanand play a sombre man with deep-seated grief. Interestingly, when we first meet Aadhi, we don't see a hero with a grand introduction sequence; he is a dispirited man with no drive in life, nursing a hangover and dark circles after a night of heavy drinking. Even during moments of elation, his expressions are measured.

In any other film, watching an actor bear the same sullen expression for most parts may not do it much good, and Aadhi might even come across even as unrealistic or exaggerated to some. But grief acts on its own time and does unimaginable things to the mind — especially at a tender age — and the film conveys this convincingly. Kanam needs a protagonist like Aadhi and an actor like Sharwanand to play him.

Similarly, Amala is terrific in what is her comeback film, one that can be likened in some ways to her previous Telugu appearance, Manam . The soul of Kanam is the bond between a mother and a son, and the scenes featuring both Amala and Sharwanand are lovely or heart-wrenching.

Take, for instance, the scene in which the mother speaks of the first time she heard her son sing. There are no gimmicky, dramatic shots, in a conscious decision to retain all the focus only on the emotions that the frames, dialogues, and performances evoke. Though Ritu Varma, who plays Aadhi's girlfriend Vaishnavi, doesn't get much screen time, her character proves vital in retrospect. Kudos to the Ninnila Ninnila actor for choosing to be a part of such endearing dramas.

Kanam is a delightful debut for Shree Karthick. Not only has he created a compelling film, but he also managed to provide enough fan service to his favourite star Rajinikanth (it’s charming how these moments too become a part of the narrative). Above all else, it is the loveliest of tributes to his late mother.

Aadhi is a youngster, and his friends are Pandi and Kathir. Adhi lost his mother some years back, but still in her memories. The friends accidentally meet Rangi Kuttapaul, a scientist. Rangi was researching time travel for 2 decades and was not successful, initially. But, now, he finds it successful. In a few interactions with Aadhi, the scientist discovers that Aadhi lost his mother when he lost his friend, Michael. Rangi offers Aadhi a chance to save his mother by time-traveling and also asks him to save his friend Michael. Aadhi’s friends also accept this offer as they have their reason for time travel. What happened next? Were they successful? The rest of the film deals with that.

Star Performance

Sharwanand and Amala have done their job exceptionally well. Amala is fantastic with her comeback in Tamil. She was last seen in Karpooramullai in Tamil. Her chemistry with Sharwa is excellent. The rest of the cast has done their part well.

Shree has come up with an interesting story. The screenplay is neat. Some films of this genre have lost their pace after a particular portion. But this film is an exception. Most middle-aged people will go nostalgic while watching the time travel scenes. The old TV ads, the movie, and the relationships add grip to the screenplay. The stars are picked up perfectly and they have done justice to the roles. Though Ritu has nothing significant to do, she fits well in the role and did a decent job. The music, cinematography, and editing are good too.

With the solid emotional script and excellent performances, the audience will forget the minor flaws in the film. If you are interested in time travel films and emotional content, this is the best film you can watch this weekend!

Kanam Movie Review: A cathartic film with a big idea and a bigger heart

Time heals… But before we can get to the healing part, there are multiple stages that we all undergo. It is in one of these stages that filmmaker Shree Karthick decided to make his debut film, Kanam , which is an extension of his personal suffering, but not without the finesse of a well-made multi-genre film. It is interesting how Tamil cinema marries the sci-fi space with its quintessential masala tropes. We don't often see pure genre films in Tamil, and Kanam is no different, but it isn't a problem because the makers never intend to intellectualise this concept.

Kanam begins with a car accident, which has an interesting subversion. Right from this moment, Shree Karthick and team cleverly inject small doses of ingenuity into time-tested cliches that never once feel outdated. The film is about Aadhi (Sharwanand), who loses his mother (Amala Akkineni) at a very young age, and finds solace in music. However, his stage fright never allows him to break into the big leagues. His closest friends Kathir (Sathish) and Pandi (Ramesh Thilak), too have their own emotional baggage. The former is unable to find a partner to marry, and the latter has an inferiority complex connected to his unfinished school education and present profession as a real estate broker. 

Shree Karthick uses one of the songs from Jakes Bejoy's brilliant soundtrack to establish the characters of the three friends and their lives. Although, Aadhi's story carries more emotional heft than the others, full points to the makers for giving the usually neglected 'hero's friends' a fulfilling personal character arc. Throw in Nasser, his eclectic time machine, and we are in for a ride riddled with a bunch of existential questions that are treated rather lightly. 

It is imperative that a time-travel film has to follow the rules ascertained in that world. Kanam too has a set of simple rules for a simple sci-fi concept. However, it is so simple that even when Nasser explains time travel to the trio, there is hardly any resistance from them. They aren't really bothered about the ramifications of time travel, and this nonchalance is actually disconcerting. How can someone not stop and ask questions when the idea of time travel is put forth? This lack of wonderment is detrimental to the narrative, which replaces scientific jargon with sentimental dialogues. But, a lot of these missteps, including the rules of the world not really being followed to a T, are overshadowed by the universality of the sentiments, and the performances of the lead cast. 

Despite limited screentime, Amala, who is just known as 'Amma', is the soul of the film. She is the archetype of a doting mother, and it is interesting how she is not given a particular name. She could be anybody's amma, and that is the universality that Shree Karthick wants Kanam to cater to. The three kids — Jay, Hitesh and Nithya — playing the younger versions of Sharwanand, Sathish, and Ramesh Thilak are very sincere in their roles and raise the standards high enough to ensure it isn't a walk in the park for their adult versions. Ramesh stands out with his earnestness and establishes his credentials as an actor who can be given a full-fledged role. Ritu Varma is given a role with very limited scope, but she makes the best of it. Also, points to the writing for giving Ravi Raghavendra, who plays Ravichandran, the father of Aadhi, a solid character arc. He has a penchant for keeping things clean, and knowing the antecedents of this habit is one of the many emotional highs of Kanam . While the central conflict heavily works in favour of the film, it is these nifty side touches that warm the heart a bit more. In fact, the reason for Nasser to go back in time, and the ambiguity existing in his life is a fascinating addition to Kanam that might seem a largely simple amma-sentiment film. 

Just like how Shree Karthick’s debut film is a way of catharsis for the young filmmaker, this feeling is extended to the audience too. Watching Kanam , one gets transported to the wondrous yet taxing world of ‘What Ifs’. We have all once walked through these hallows to find answers to questions we wish we never had. Throughout all time-travel films, it has always been about one single want of the protagonist, which more often than not revolves around love… and regret, in any form. Shree Karthick and team give us a bunch of relatable characters that connect with us on such a deep level that we begin to envision ourselves as them. In fact, even during the runtime of the film, whenever I found time from wiping my tears or sporting a wide smile, I was traversing multiple timelines in my head. However, there is also the fear that too much is left to chance, and we aren’t sure if a course correction in our past is the best way forward. All we have is the present, and Shree Karthick has designed a film that might seem like a conversation with time but is a deeply introspective piece, which urges us to make peace with our decisions and where life has brought us. We know time heals… and films like Kanam remind us that art heals too.

Kanam starring Premam  & Fidaa fame Sai Pallavi and Naga Shaurya, helmed by AL Vijay, has hit the theaters today.  This is a bilingual which was shot in both Telugu and Tamil languages.  Its Tamil version is titled as Diya which marks the debut of Sai Pallavi in Tamil.  Let’s see the storyline:

  Story:   Tulasi (Sai Pallavi) and Krishna (Naga Shaurya) are leading a happy life but very soon  the sudden deaths in their family starts. Tulasi realizes that there is something- her aborted baby (Baby Veronika), who  is responsible for the deaths and  her next target  is her own father. What happens next, form the rest of the story.

  Performance:   Sai Pallavi who is known for her natural performance, has given her best. She steals the show by her natural look and performance skills.  She performed well both as the mother who pines for her lost child, and the wife who tries to save her husband. Naga Shaurya delivers his remarkable performance in the movie. Baby Veronica looks cute and she also delivers her best. Priyadarshi Pulikonda, Santhana Bharathi, Gandhari Nithin, Rekha, Ravi and others perform accordingly.

Technical:   The Story of the film has an interesting concept  of abortion. What makes Kanam interesting is it’s screenplay. The Cinematography by Nirav Shah is impressive.  He gives a thriller look with his visuals. The music by Syam CS is excellent. Sai Pallavi rarely smiles  in the film, which is well elevated by the music. The production values  by Lyca Productions are excellent. The editing by Anthony is good. Coming on the work of director AL Vijay,  he has also used each character to progress the story .

  Analysis:    Overall Kanam is good and watchable movie because it shines the spotlight on a sensitive topic- Abortion.  The director deserves applause for his  attempt to engage  the viewers with something important but different issue. The plus points of the film are Sai Pallavi, unique plot , screenplay, and music. On the flipside, there is nothing exciting in second half. The movie carries good social message.

A sweet little time travel flick.

Follows the slow and steady wins the race path, a simple and a neatly made sci-fi flick with no complex stuff. Despite the lags, an engrossing watch for the most part topped with the right amount of emotions. (more)

Solid performances and simple writing makes Kanam a film to be cherished.

Overall, the message it tells us is conveyed in a non-preachy way, and the point is driven home.
