Enemy Movie Review: This Vishal-Arya Action-Film Is Formulaic, Rudimentary, Predictable And Pretty Fun

Enemy Movie Review: This Vishal-Arya Action-Film Is Formulaic, Rudimentary, Predictable And Pretty Fun

Director: Anand Shankar Cast: Vishal, Arya, Thambi Ramaiah, Prakash Raj, Mamta Mohandas, Mrinalini Ravi, Karunakaran Language: Tamil

If you're seen any of Anand Shankar's previous work, especially his debut Arima Nambi and sophomore effort Iru Mugan , you would have specific and somewhat subdued expectations from his recent outing Enemy . If you do, you might just return satisfied.

Enemy is the story of Chozhan (Vishal), a departmental store owner by day and maverick vigilante do-gooder by night. The film spends over 30 minutes establishing his childhood, his father's (Thambi Ramaiah) risk-averse nature, his relationship with retired CBI officer neighbour Paari (Prakash Raj) and his son Rajiv (Arya). These parts are rudimentary. It moves fast, and in annotated milestones.

Sometimes, the annotations are insulting. For instance, to test the "photographic memory" skills of Chozhan and Rajiv, Paari asks a policeman to pretend to be a pickpocket. This police officer, on arrival promptly salutes Paari, stomping his feet on the ground and all, before asking, "how is my civilian clothes, sir?" Paari could have simply laughed this idiocy off. But no. Enemy is the kind of film that forces a dialogue that the get up is fine, but the over-enthusiastic salute is not, an explanation so stale that Prakash Raj himself was part of one such scene in Anniyan over 15 years ago.

Thankfully, the film moves to the present day and to a zone where writer-director Anand Shankar finds himself more comfortable in: Action. Vishal gets a loud, traditionally-mass intro, standing on top of Singapore high-rises, jumping through glass walls, breaking high-security safes and feeding people biriyani for good measure. Cinematographer R. D. Rajasekhar makes the action sequences, with tall glass buildings, colourful night clubs, big cranes, highway chases and what not, perfectly engaging, even if not entirely innovative.

That's all there is to the film, though. The half-interesting butterfly effect-inspired trick — of setting up an apparently unrelated incident to change the course of action for something more sensitive — is rehashed so often, it feels ordinary. The boardroom discussions among Chinese businessmen about killing the Indian foreign minister is almost worse than its 7 Aum Arivu counterpart. When one Indian businessman suggests that they resort to murder, a Chinese businessman responds with "wait, we need to put this decision to vote!" There must be a joke somewhere there about democracy, China and crime.

After introducing Rajiv, the film stops taking any interest in suspense and resorts entirely to action. As a result, a lot of clues fall into Chozhan's lap. At one point, a child traces fluorescent tire marks to solve a crime! Chozhan just taps on laptops and finds dark-web account details of an assassin — code name: bounty hunter — who has been paid in bitcoins. They keep talking about the sophisticated nature of a wanted criminal who is never even known to have committed a crime. But on screen, you see Chozhan just trip and fall into clues!

Soon, the film gets highly predictable. So much so that the gentleman next to me in the theatre couldn't stop himself from predicting what'll happen next despite my stern glances. There is little that we haven't already seen. The film doesn't do much to hide its plot points either. But to Anand Shankar's credit, he uses this predictability to fuel anticipation. For instance, we know that Chozhan is going to show up to save the kidnapped kids, but we can hardly wait (or is it just me?).

Mrinalini Ravi, as Chozhan's love interest, gets 1-2 tangential scenes and duet songs, in which she does the bare minimum. Mamta Mohandas, as Anisha, Rajiv's love interest, gets more screen space and has immense potential, to say nothing of how stunning she looks. But the film squanders it by fashioning her as your ordinary damsel in distress. Enemy doesn't know how to write its women at all — sexual violence, pregnancy, motherhood and needing-to-be-saved is all it can think of (even as a revolutionary dead mother is referred to a couple of times)!

Nor is it sure how to treat its audience. Karunakaran, who plays Vishal's friend, is the voice of the viewer. The hero is expected to explain his grand plans to him, so we lesser beings can understand what he intends. But, most often, his character ends up being the irritating idiot who only prolongs the scene unnecessarily. Enemy also tries to milk the Tamil diaspora sentiment, and fails miserably. There is nothing in the film to substantiate the jingoism, but hey, every film needs a cause, right!

Vishal as Chozhan is adequate. His best parts are the stunts. He is believable as the guy who makes those huge jumps and heavy punches. His weakest moments are emotional scenes and dance sequences. At one point, his discomfort transfers to the audience through the screen. Arya, for his part, gives him a tough fight at being terrible at emotional scenes. Their lack is over-compensated by Sam CS's background score.

The least effective part about Enemy is how it fashions itself as a high-concept film. "Anger is blinding you," "you were always egoistic" and "you're emotionally unstable" are thrown around to explain to us the actions of the hero and the villain. But on screen, they are rather lame. In the climax, this interaction between the two people in the middle of a grandly executed fight is laughable.

Yet, as a mass masala film, Enemy entertains. It keeps the momentum going and comes to a reasonable end. In a way, Enemy is like Vishal's dance — full-bodied, hard-working, energetic, confident, but entirely devoid of knack for the art. That doesn't make it unwatchable though.

Enemy Movie Review

Naming a film that stars two wide known best friends in the industry as Enemy, is one way to lit up the curiosity game. Story teller Anand Shankar who marked his entry in to Tamil cinema with his thriller drama Arima Nambi, followed it with an experiment flick Iru Mugan . This engendered anticipation on his third. Adding Vishal and Arya to the cast just upped the expectation level. It has been a decade since actors Vishal and Arya came together for Avan Ivan in 2011. Now they are back together on screens once again with their mass action thriller Enemy. So how has the entertainer come out? Will it earn them critical acclamations like their previous venture did and put them in a sound commercial success spot? To know that let us get in to the movie review.

Enemy Movie Pictures 01

Enemy Movie Pictures 01

The film follows the life of two best friends Chozhan (Vishal) and Rajiv (Arya). Out in Ooty, Chozhan a kid, is experiencing an insipid upbringing under the influence of his risk aversive father Ramalingam (Thambi Ramaiah). Chozhan is not allowed to even go out let alone try doing anything new. Chozhan has his redemption, when Paari (Prakash Raj), a retired CBI officer moves next to his house along with his son Rajiv (Arya). If Ramalingam is one stereotype of a father, Paari is another. Paari has already decided that his son is going to become a cop while he is hardly ten. He trains him vigorous. Piqued by the action involved, young Purachi Thalapathy puts himself on board and begins to train along with Rajiv. Paari teach them the esoteric police operation dexterities from even before the age where they could understand what it is. As days pass, he judges that Chozhan is sharper and has the capability to make it as a cop.

He begins to press Rajiv to work hard. Jealously begins to brew in Rajiv. Out of the blue, one day Paari is murdered. Fearing the police investigation Ramalingam shifts his family to Singapore sending Chozhan and Rajiv in different paths. Fast forward. Now, Chozhan is a departmental store owner in Singapore. But hey, that is just his part-time job – a cover for the vigilante side of him. He is the robin hood of Tamil people in Singapore. Chozhan implies everything he learned from Paari to help the Tamil community in Singapore. Yeah, the Purachi Thalapathy mode. As we all know fate (or director Anand Shankar) brings Chozhan and Rajiv together again after 25 years. Now, Rajiv has gone on to earn himself a reputation of becoming the Interpol’s most wanted man. They go against each other. Will they destroy each other, or find a way to sing ‘En nanban potta soru nidhamum thinnen paru natpai kooda karpai polae ennuven’, is what makes the rest of the flick.

In Tamil cinema a hero can do anything, or whatever he sets his mind up on, however improbable it may seem to reality. It is this philosophy that has ruled k-town for decades. Film maker Anand Shankar uses the space that this philosophy enables to the maximum. His hero is an ordinary man, but if he wants to break in to a building with tight surveillance, he will, without efforts. Simply, just like that. You cannot ask how, or is it even possible. He is a Tamil hero and there really is not anything that is not feasible for him. This is the tone in which Enemy unfolds. The larger-than-life picturing of the hero is thrown right at our face. Chozhan pulls off James Bond-esque stunts and Mission Impossible style break ins. But we do not know how could he. He did it. Just buy it. Story teller Anand Shankar seems to say.

If you had watched the director’s debut movie Arima Nambi, it too had portions of this sort. But it was just moments of weak spots. But Enemy is just filled of such moments. There is a scene in which Rajiv, the most wanted assassin in the Interpol’s list brawls with Chozhan for the chocolate that he was deprived of in his childhood because of him. Was that meant to be funny? Seriously? One does not know what to make of it. Despite all the loopholes and weak writing Enemy does manage to get our attention from time to time but it just does not capitalize on them.

Actor Vishal as usual crackles as a fire cracker and comes around mouthing punchlines. But it has become tedious watching him do the same things film after film. Picking up an antagonist role, actor Arya has tried to do something different with Enemy. But his performance as Rajiv is not very different from what we have already seen of him. Oh yeah, there are two heroines in the flick. Actresses Mirnalini Ravi and Mamta Mohandas . Withdrawing whom would have at least shortened the lengthy running time. Veteran actor Prakash Raj makes his presence felt even in the limited screen time. Actor Thambi Ramaiah is impressive as always. Comedian Karunakaran throws enjoyable running gags here and there; the rest are not funny. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them.

On the technical front, music director S. Thaman tracks are not inspiring and do not last in our memory for too long. Musician Sam C. S’s background score are thumping and lifts the mass moments. Cinematographer Raymond Derrick Crasta has covered the entertainer from all best angles emphasizing the efforts put in by the actors in action blocks. Editor Ruben has done a fine job with his cuts.

On the whole, if you are willing to overlook the blatant logical loopholes in the film, Enemy could be your cup of tea.

Enemy Movie Review (2021)

Vishal - arya starrer enemy tamil movie review - film directed by anand shankar.

Enemy Movie Review in English

Enemy Movie Cast & Crew

Vishal and Arya's multi-starrer film, Enemy has hit the screens amidst a fairly good anticipation among the film buffs. Directed by Anand Shankar, this film features Mirnalini Ravi as the female lead and Prakash Raj, Mamta Mohandas, and Thambi Ramaiah in supporting roles. Here is what Enemy is all about.

STORY:  Enemy traces the story of two childhood friends, who turn foes due to one's ego and jealousy. Chozhan (Vishal) and Rajiv (Arya), in their early teens, are trained by Rajiv's father, an ex-CBI officer (Prakash Raj) to make them join the Police. But, certain situations make them part ways and years later, Chozhan becomes a departmental store owner and Rajiv becomes an underground hitman. Fate brings them together once again and they decide to lock horns against each other. What was the conflict between them and who won the face-off forms the plot of Enemy.

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES, & DIRECTION:  Enemy has a good premise and when the basement is quite strong, you are bound to be invested in seeing what the film has in store. The idea is definitely interesting and is worthy of being made as a film. Director Anand Shankar builds up the film with several interesting elements which makes the first half fairly engaging, setting up a solid groundwork for the faceoff. However, in the second half, the cat and mouse game isn't packed with solid moments to hold your attention. You pretty much know how Arya's character is going to react to a situation and how Vishal's character will respond. This is where the screenplay faces issues and as a result, the film becomes a mixed bag.

Had the second half been packaged in an engaging fashion with exciting moments, the final product would have been better. With a seamless writing and engaging second half, Enemy would have been a solid action drama. Arya's character had the potential to become an iconic villain on the lines of Siddharth Abhimanyu of Thani Oruvan, but due to a cliched writing and predictable characterization, his actions don't look threatening. Leaving aside these shortcomings, if you are a fan of stylish action entertainers, Enemy could turn out to be a good watch.

CAST:  Vishal is quite impressive as Chozhan and he delivers a fine performance. Action being his forte, the star actor is effective. Arya looks menacing and smart as Rajiv and, it is good to see him on the other side of the play. However, in the emotional scenes, Arya's performance lacks completeness. Prakash Raj, despite appearing in a short role, leaves his mark with measured performance. Thambi Ramaiah as an innocent father does justice to his character. Mirnalini Ravi looks pretty on screen, but, coming to the acting part, she isn't given any responsibilities as she just appears in a brief number of scenes.

TECHNICAL:   Thaman's songs do not have his trademark touch. Sam CS' pulsating score complements the film's subject and it helps in adding energy to the scenes. RD Rajasekhar's cinematography looks solid making the film look neat and rich in terms of visual quality. Raymond Derrick Crasta's racy cuts work in favor of the film.

SO?   A film like Enemy needed a strong writing with a highly engaging second half!

Verdict Vishal and Arya hold this middling action-drama to a decent level!

Enemy Movie Review: Check Out Audience's Reaction to Vishal, Arya-starrer

Vishal Krishna and Arya's Enemy will be clashing with Rajinikanth's Annaatthe. It will hit the screens on Thursday, 4 November, on the occasion of Diwali.

Enemy Movie Review

It is an action drama directed by Anand Shankar, who made movies like Vikram's Iru Mugan and Vijay Deverakonda's NOTA. Apart from Vishal and Arya, the film has Mrinalani Ravi, Mamta Mohandas, Prakash Raj, Thambi Ramaiah, Karunakaran among others.

The film has S Thaman's music and the background score is composed by Sam CS. RD Rajasekhar has handled the cinematography while Raymond Derrick Crasta has edited the flick.

It is an action thriller packed with action and masala. It's the story of two childhood friends and their escalating competitive nature. To what extent are they ready to go? The answer to this question forms the crux of the story.

Hype: The trailer and teaser had promised the audience of giving an action-masala treat. There is a decent hype around the film. With the movie getting over 250 screens in Tamil Nadu , the movie is expected to enjoy above-average viewership in the days to come although Rajinikanth  and Nayanthara's Annaatthe is expected to steal the show on Thursday.

Can Enemy win the hearts of the audience? Find it out in the viewers' comments below:

'Enemy 'movie review: A no-frills action thriller that strikes the right emotional chords

Still from 'Enemy'

Enemy is not only a film with lots of weaponry, but also one that takes a different type of gun—the Chekhov’s gun—quite seriously. There’s quite a bit of evident foreshadowing as well. A dialogue like, “Naan un rani-a thookiten parthiya?” is followed by a shot of a girl close to one of the leads getting kidnapped. A shot that lingers on a digital board, is later followed by the villain hacking into it.

Does all the familiarising get us excited throughout the film? The results are varied. You go ‘wow’, but you also go ‘meh’. Where the film excels in though, is with the emotions. Though we are puzzled about how the leads, Chozhan (Vishal) and Rajiv (Arya), orchestrate missions and evade the law enforcement— like every other action film—it is the ‘why’ that is of interest.

Both men in the film are aware that they can’t inflict pain on each other physically, and so, they aim for each other’s hearts. Though this isn’t an entirely novel idea on the silver screen, the way Anand Shankar builds everything on top of a solid backstory, involving Prakash Raj and the two kids, makes for interesting cinema. Some may be slightly confused by terms like heat-radiating paints, photographic memory and remote-controlled pacemakers, but if you enjoy these gadgets and the novelty, you are guaranteed a fun ride in this film that is full of such concepts.

Though the film doesn’t quite outwit the audience with reveals, it keeps trying. Excluding the overlong video call episode of Arya, the film steadily throws you something new to be invested in. While logic can take a backseat in such action affairs, it does get disconcerting when some basic questions don’t seem to get answered. “Why didn’t the leads choose to settle their score by combat when they met for the first time as adults?” “How did one of the leads walk away scot-free, after killing a foreign minister?” “How did Mamta’s Anisha guard her identity for decades, while having an obvious surname?” For these reasons and more, the film isn’t Vishal’s career-best, but the actor is very much back to form, after some mellow outings recently.

The dancing reminds you of his Chellamae days, and he looks the part as the alpha male, excelling in action sequences and looking at home with the performance as well. I found it a tad strange that the character seemed to, for some reason, show high levels of concern for Non-Resident Tamils. It is a part of the narrative, sure, but the treatment feels like an advertorial aimed to project the actor as a saviour. Arya as an actor has the gift of a disarming smile, it’s one that can conceal kind intentions or black malice. It’s hard to truly predict what’s underneath until he chooses to reveal it.

And this comes in extremely handy for his character, Rajiv, i n Enemy . Though Vishal holds an upper hand in action, Arya charms with his style. His ‘I have seen everything’ attitude in the film explains what Rajiv could have potentially gone on to become such a cold person. In many action-thrillers, the customary love track and songs come through as speed breakers, but even these elements are quite enjoyable, in the context of this film being a festival release.

The sequences are written not to dilute the essence of the main plot. Enemy is a simple, yet refreshing action thriller, that is self-aware of its potential and refrains from biting more than it can chew. Even the social message towards the end is subtle. Sometimes, it’s better not to aspire for the skies, and pick a level that’s reachable. It’s why Enemy feels like such an efficient film.

‘Enemy’ movie review: A convoluted cat-and-mouse action drama

Anand shankar’s film, after an elaborate and promising start, fizzles out after its leading men are introduced.

Updated - November 09, 2021 11:01 am IST

Vishal and Arya in ‘Enemy’

Vishal and Arya in ‘Enemy’

The first half hour of Enemy , directed by Anand Shankar, has a promising prologue. It reminded me of Ullasam as it involves two fathers and their respective schoolgoing sons.

Ramalingam (played by Thambi Ramiah) is so cautious about his son, Chozha, that he puts the coconut inside a small sackcloth bag before breaking it in a temple, lest a piece of shell pierces his son's eye. His mockers even give him the moniker 'Risk' Ramalingam. His risk-averseness is not merely a gimmick. Anand, who has also written the film, provides a solid reason for why he is the way he is.

Meanwhile, Ramalingam's newly moved in neighbour, Paari (Prakash Raj), is a retired cop who has overcome assassination attempts and suffered bullet injuries. Paari wants his son, Rajeev, to be strong, bold and brilliant and thus trains him to be a cop. The training includes solving 4 by 4 cubes, low-plank-crawls under an obstacle and other exercises. When young Rajeev complains of pain during the plank crawl, Paari adds more weight on his back. "You should learn to endure pain. Only then can you overcome your enemies," he tells his son.

Chozha, meanwhile, imbibes Paari's lessons secretly from next door. He even flicks one of the many cubes and solves it overnight. Ramalingam because he wants his son to stay away from risks. And, Rajeev, because Chozha is better than him. He dislikes Paari praising him more.

Anand takes about half an hour for this setup, even if it delays the introduction of the stars — Vishal and Arya. The writing is layered too. It is the story of two single fathers wanting their sons to be like themselves. There is also jealously brewing within Rajeev because his father appreciates Chozha more than him. At this point, a mysterious murder separates the two boys.

  • Cast: Vishal, Arya, Thambi Ramaiah, Prakash Raj, Mamta Mohandas, and more
  • Director: Anand Shankar
  • Storyline: How jealousy turns a boyhood competition into a life-and-death rivalry

This was a solid setup for a cat-and-mouse game between Chozha and Rajeev (at least that is what the trailer and the title promised).

But, like a Deepavali firecracker that sparks for a long time, raising our anticipation, only to fizzle out, the film starts to fumble after this promising build-up.

Anand manages to keep us guessing on a few occasions. For instance, just as we predict the film to be a game of oneupmanship between a cop and a thief, we are proven wrong.

But soon after the main stars of Enemy , Vishal and Arya, appear on screen, the film starts its descent. By now, Vishal looks after a supermarket in Singapore with his father. But he is also proficient in hacking, superb in hand-to-hand combat, and is an excellent marksman. If the Avengers were recruiting in Singapore, he would have been a frontrunner.

Arya, meanwhile, has become one of the world's deadliest assassins. Despite the muscles, Arya lacks the menace of a deadly assassin. Even when he threatens to kill a bunch of children, he evokes neither fear nor anger. The women in the movie, Mamta Mohandas and Mirnalini Ravi, hardly have anything to do.

The writing also slackens after the setup. Anand brings into the plot the problems of Tamil migrants and Indo-China politics for reasons little known to us.

Despite the implications of protagonists being geniuses, none of their acts to outdo each other is particularly clever. Maybe that is why, in the end, they abandon brains for brawn and settle their scores over a bloody brawl.

enemy movie review indiaglitz

In the two recent films that gave him an international name, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve brought an acutely concentrated vision to bear on stories of violent conflict beyond his native land. The Oscar-nominated “ Incendies ” concerned the horrors of war in a nameless but vividly evoked Middle Eastern country, while last year’s “ Prisoners ” was a lacerating tale of kidnapping, terror and torture in a no less carefully described Pennsylvania town.

“Enemy,” Villeneuve’s latest (it was filmed between the two above-mentioned films, though it is being released after the latter), differs from the earlier works not only in being set in Canada, but also in offering a story that’s ostensibly less concerned with painful real-life struggles than with dream-like subjective perplexities. Adapted by screenwriter Javier Gullon from Portuguese author Jose Saramago’s novel “ The Double ,” the brooding, crepuscular drama features Jake Gyllenhaal (who also starred in “Prisoners”) in the roles of a man and his double.

Since stories of doubles, with their long pedigree in literature and cinema, inherently belong to the realm of the fantastical, “Enemy” obviously stands apart from the traumatic real-world political and criminal traumas of its two predecessors. Less ambitious (and, at 90 minutes, far shorter) than those films, it’s inevitably less impressive, more like a semi-whimsical short story by a master whose real forte is challenging realistic novels of epic scope.

Yet that’s not to suggest the three films are entirely different. Also tinged with the quality of nightmares, the violence in “Incendies” and “Prisoners” was, or had the feeling of being, fratricidal or internecine. In “Enemy” there’s also a sense of the antagonists being closely related, whether as long separated twins, as two aspects of the same personality, or as guys who fall into a violent competition due to the accidental “kinship” of their identical looks. Which of these possibilities, if any, comprises the “real” explanation is a question the film keeps thrusting back to the viewer.

The movie’s look has the color of nicotine stains, or a smoggy freeway at dusk. Adam Bell (Gyllenhaal) has brown hair, a brown beard and inveterately wears rumpled brown or tan clothes. He lives in a vast brown city called Toronto and teaches history in an institutionally light-brownish classroom that’s only half-full of students. In one of the few lecture snippets we hear from him, he tells his class that the rulers of Rome gave its citizens bread and circuses for purposes of distraction. With the blank affect of a man who’s bored with every aspect of his life, Adam himself seems in need of distraction. Which is perhaps why, one day in the faculty room, he takes another teacher’s advice to seek out a certain movie on DVD, one that promises to lift his spirits.

Watching the film later, Adam notices something strange in the background of one scene: an actor playing a bellhop has his own face. Startled, he does some research and discovers that the actor, Anthony Claire, has only three films to his credit. After finding out where the man lives, Adam begins calling his home, and initially gets only hostile, suspicious reactions from Anthony and his pregnant wife, Helen ( Sarah Gadon ).

Before they ever meet, we see that Adam and Anthony are leading roughly parallel lives. Neither seems professionally fulfilled. They are underachievers facing the approach of middle age with a glum dissatisfaction that perhaps masks an underlying anger, a desire to lash at the world—or someone else. Both men are also involved with blonde women who resemble each other both physically and in their difficulties with their partners. While the angry sex and icy silences shared by Adam and his girlfriend Mary ( Melanie Laurent ) signal a relationship about to implode, Helen evidently agonizes over bearing the child of a man she suspects of infidelity.

Once the two men encounter each other and, via the magic of special effects, inhabit the same visual space, the movie’s most salient virtue comes into focus: Gyllenhaal, a very talented actor in most circumstances, here does exceptional work playing two men who are almost—but not quite—identical. The differences are small, and more emotional than physical. Anthony is meaner and more imperious, Adam more resentful and recessive. Observing these subtle contrasts offers no end of fascinations, yet we’re simultaneously aware of the inevitabilities implied by the characters’ competitiveness and hostility: each will try to bed the other’s woman, and only one will be left alive at the end.

As noted, Villeneuve and Gullon leave the meaning of all this an open question—or perhaps several questions at once. Is the French Canadian director’s tale of Anglo Canada an allegory of his culturally divided homeland? Is the cryptic story a symbolic meditation on something central to cinema, the fraught relationship between an actor and the “double” he fashions in creating a character who bears his likeness? Does it contain a whiff of Villeneuve’s feelings about Canada’s greatest art-film auteur prior to his arrival, David Cronenberg , whose “ Dead Ringers ” is one of cinema’s finest tales of doubles.

Take your pick, or better yet, supply your own reading. What seems certain is that Villeneuve is a very self-conscious artist whose estimable work descends from the European high-modernist tradition of decades past. Thus, in “Enemy,” we don’t find a clear debt to any particular doubles-themed work of literature or cinema, but rather echoes of the concerns and stylistic penchants of directors such as Bergman, Bunuel, Polanski, Kieslowki and Antonioni (especially in the contemplation of Toronto’s sprawling architectural jumble). All of those filmmakers came from an indigenous national cinema, then went on to become transnational cosmopolitan artists. The same is now happening to Villeneuve. Perhaps questions of identity and “doubleness” go with making that kind of leap.

Enemy was released on 4 November 2021 to mixed reviews from critics, but became an average venture at the box office.

1996 : In Ooty , 13-year-old Chozhan Ramalingam and Rajiv Parirajan are childhood friends whom Parirajan, Rajiv's father, trains to enable them to join the police force. Although given equal training, Chozhan bests Rajiv, much to the latter's jealousy. One day, Chozhan and Rajiv are playing chess , and Rajiv wins. While Rajiv leaves Chozhan pondering over the outcome, he sees Parirajan dead on the floor. The police escort the boys to the police station, and Chozhan tells the inspector and Ramalingam, Chozhan's risk-averse father, that he can catch the killer using his skills. Ramalingam takes Chozhan away, leaving Rajiv alone, and makes his son promise to stop taking risks.

2021 : Chozhan works at a departmental store run by Ramalingam in Singapore . Unbeknownst to his father, he is a part-time vigilante who thwarts minor crimes and corruption to help the Tamil community. One day, a gas company near his store suddenly bursts, which kills 11 people and severely injures five more. Chozhan catches Joseph, the painter behind the mess, and hands him over to the police. The next day, Arundathi Mohan, the Indian External Affairs minister , comes to Singapore to address the Tamil people but struggles to speak at the gathering. Chozhan senses that her pacemaker has been tampered with and shoots her in the chest to disable it. The police arrest Chozhan, but release him after they realize his intentions.

Chozhan tips off the police to the culprit at a hotel, who turns out to be Rajiv, now a hardened assassin whom a corrupt Beijing businessman hired to kill the minister. However, Rajiv escapes after threatening to kill the police officers' families. Chozhan meets up with Rajiv, who reveals what happened on the day they separated: Parirajan confronted and scolded Rajiv for misusing his skills to loot some money, which made Rajiv kill his father. He also overheard his father saying that Chozhan would eventually overshadow Rajiv in anything, thus inciting in him a deep hatred towards Chozhan.

Rajiv claims that he has evolved in multiple ways and is way too advanced for Chozhan to intercept while challenging him to rescue one of his kidnapped loved ones. Chozhan calls everyone for a surprise engagement party with his love interest, Ashvitha, to protect them. However, Chozhan soon realised that his cousin's daughter, Pinky, had gone missing from her school trip. Rajiv contacts him and informs him that he kidnapped Pinky from her school to kill her. Chozhan responds by abducting Rajiv's pregnant wife and partner, Anisha, whom Rajiv rescued from her unsavory uncle not long after killing his father. Chozhan threatens to kill Anisha if anything happens to Pinky.

At a meeting to exchange their kin, Rajiv releases Pinky but Chozhan knows he won't let his enmity go so easily. He makes a deal with Rajiv: Chozhan will safely send Anisha back to India if Rajiv surrenders to the police for the deaths of the 11 people from the gas explosion earlier. Rajiv reluctantly agrees. As Chozhan takes Anisha to the airport, the hitman sent by the Beijing businessman to kill Rajiv after he failed his assignment learns about her connection to him. The hitman follows Anisha and slits her throat in the washroom. In prison, Rajiv finds out about Anisha's death on TV and is anguished, thinking Chozhan broke their deal. He escapes by swallowing prawns , triggering an allergic reaction.

Rajiv plots against Chozhan by kidnapping the children of his area and tells the community that to save their children, Ramalingam must die. He attempts to brainwash someone into shooting Ramalingam to no avail. Rajiv then extorts Ramalingam alone to commit suicide by drinking rat poison after revealing that he killed his father, and Ramalingam taking his son away was why Parirajan's case remained unsolved. In the meantime, Chozhan saves the children and returns with them. Ramalingam dies in his son's arms after encouraging Chozhan to finish Rajiv.

Chozhan confronts Rajiv inside a skyscraper, and after an intense fight, he kicks Rajiv off the building and grabs him by his leg. Chozhan divulges the Beijing corporates' involvement in Anisha's death. Rajiv is shocked upon realizing he misjudged the situation and begs Chozhan to pull him up, but Chozhan drops him off the building to his death.

Several years later, Chozhan goes with his son to lay flowers on Ramalingam's and Rajiv's graves. When his son asks why Chozhan lays flowers on Rajiv's grave even though he was a bad man, Chozhan says it's to remind himself of how he became who he is today.

Enemy movie review.

enemy movie review indiaglitz

'Enemy' is currently playing in theatres. Let's find out what works and what doesn't.

The film tells the story of two friends who become foes. Prakash Raj plays a gutsy retired CBI officer who wants his son Rajeev (Arya) to become his worthy successor. His neighbour's kid Surya (Vishal) is more intelligent than Rajeev, who grows jealous as a kid. Many years later, Surya has grown into a secretive vigilante in Singapore. For his sentimental and unassuming father (Thambi Ramaiah), Surya is a businessman running a supermarket. But he has a second face.

In comes Rajeev, seeking to assassinate an Indian Minister in Singapore. It's up to Surya to foil his mission. A dark gang in China is also thrown into the mix.

Performances

Vishal is able, although he doesn't offer anything new in terms of acting. The actor's agility and aptness in action scenes help the matters. Arya is an able match. The Telugu audience haven't seen him in such a role prominently. This Diwali release might help Arya. While Prakash Raj 's character is not full-fledged, he makes a thorough impact. Incidentally, the versatile actor is also seen in this week's another Diwali release, 'Peddanna'. Thambi Ramaiah is talented, while Karunakaran as Surya's friend is routine.

Mrinalini Ravi plays Surya's girlfriend, while Mamata Mohandas is seen as Rajeev's clandestine girlfriend. Malavika Avinash, Marimuthu and George Maryan are part of the cast.

Technical aspects

Sam CS's BGM takes a beaten track. It's inventive only occasionally. Thaman's music is jaded. The 'Tum Tum' song comes with horrible placement. RD Rajasekhar's cinematography is nice, although more sophistication was expected. Since the film is an action thriller, Ravi Verma's action choreography should have been top-notch. T Ramalingam's production design understands the ambience and feel of Singapore. But the flavour becomes generic after a point.

In 'Enemy', the stakes are high. Three countries are involved in the mix. There are conspiracies of a gigantic scale. At the centre are two individuals, who were once friends. One has become a genius, the other one is an evil genius. But only the former has it easy, while the latter always has it hard.

A lot of the potential of 'Enemy' depended on how Surya's supreme intelligence and Rajeev's evilness played out. And it is not superb. There is a backstory that is too elaborate. Mass tragedies play out without moving us.

Both Surya and Rajeev execute their respective agendas secretly. The drama that emanates from his secrecy is not exciting. In showing Surya as a serial helper, an ethical hacker, and a vigilante rolled into one, 'Enemy' also resorts to too many cinematic liberties.

The rom-com track didn't need to be so elaborate. Even in major attacks, the cops of Singapore are caught unawares. They say they don't have evidence to do something. Why do they need evidence when they know there is a potential threat to a Minister's life? In a pacy film, a character would have been detained before the audience is told he will be detained.

Surya is a local mass leader in a foreign land. But, after, a point, we wonder why the film was set in Singapore. It could have been set in Hyderabad. But this is one just of the many things that we don't get about the film.

Closing Remarks

The prologue of 'Enemy' is great. But the second half tests your patience.

Under the Mini Studios name, Anand Shankar and Vinod Kumar are the directors and producers of the 2021 Indian action thriller film Enemy, which is produced in Tamil.

Vishal and Arya play the main roles in the movie, with supporting performances coming from Mirnalini Ravi, Mamta Mohandas, Prakash Raj, Thambi Ramaiah, and Karunakaran. This is Vishal and Arya’s second film together, following Avan Ivan (2011). When Enemy debuted on November 4, 2021, it received a mixed response from reviewers and performed mediocrely at the box office.

1996: Parirajan, Rajiv’s father, trains his two buddies, Chozhan Ramalingam and Rajiv Parirajan, in Ooty. He gives them permission to become police officers. Despite having the same training, Chozhan seems to outperform Rajiv, making the latter envious of the former. When Rajiv and Chozhan play chess one day, Rajiv prevails.

Rajiv discovers Parirajan dead on the ground as he departs Chozhan, who is contemplating the result. As the boys are taken to the police station by the police, Chozhan informs the inspector and his risk-averse father, Ramalingam, that he can use his expertise to catch the perpetrator. Chozhan is taken away by Ramalingam, leaving Rajiv by himself.

2021: Chozhan acquires a department store in Singapore that Ramalingam owns and operates. But today, in an effort to support the Tamil community, he has transformed into a part-time vigilante who works covertly to stop corruption and small-time crimes.

One day, a gas company next to his store blows up without warning, killing 11 Tamils and seriously hurting five more. Joseph, the painter, is apprehended by Chozhan behind the mess and given over to the police.

The Indian minister of external affairs, Arundathi Mohan, arrives in Singapore the following day to address the Tamil community, but she finds it difficult to speak at the event. As soon as Chozhan realizes that someone has interfered with her implanted heart pacemaker, she attempts to save her.

Chozhan is apprehended by the police, but they later let him go when they realize he saved her. Chozhan gives the police a tip, and they apprehend the offender in a motel. The Beijing-based multinational billionaire hired Rajiv, a seasoned assassin, to kill India’s minister of external affairs.

Rajiv, nevertheless, makes off after threatening to harm the police officers’ family. When Chozhan and Rajiv reunite, Rajiv tells him what transpired the day they split up: Parirajan confronts Rajiv. Parirajan chastised him for stealing money by misusing his abilities, which led Rajiv to murder his father. Additionally, he heard him predict that Chozhan would soon surpass Rajiv in everything, which made him harbor a lifelong animosity toward Chozhan.

Following the disclosure, Rajiv challenges Chozhan to save one of the near ones he would soon kidnap, claiming that he has matured and changed in many ways and is far too sophisticated for him to intercept. Chozhan invites everyone to an unexpected meeting with Ashvitha. He took this action to ensure that his loved ones were never separated from him in case Rajiv abducted any of them.

Chozhan discovered during his engagement to Ashvitha that Pinky, his cousin’s daughter, had vanished on her school excursion. Chozhan replies by kidnapping Rajiv’s pregnant wife, Anisha, after Rajiv soon phones him to tell him that he took Pinky from her school with the intention of killing her. If something happens to Pinky, Chozhan vows to kill Anisha.

Chozhan and Rajiv get together to swap family members. Chozhan adds he would not easily let go of this issue as Rajiv releases Pinky to him. He strikes a bargain with Rajiv: in exchange for Rajiv turning himself in to the police for the 11 deaths, he will take Anisha back to India securely.

Reluctantly, Rajiv gives in and gives up. When the hitman—who had been dispatched by the businessman from Beijing to kill Rajiv—learns about Anisha’s relationship with Rajiv, he follows and slashes her throat in the restroom as Chozhan drives her to the airport.

Rajiv is distraught when he watches Anisha’s death on TV while he is incarcerated. He believes that Chozhan has broken his word and escaped from prison by ingesting prawns, which caused allergies and choking episodes in him. He kidnaps local children as part of a scheme against Chozhan and informs the community that Ramalingam must perish in order to save their children.

To little effect, Rajiv tries to indoctrinate someone into shooting Ramalingam in order to protect their kids. After Ramalingam confesses that he killed his father when he was thirteen, Rajiv coerces Ramalingam into taking rat poison to end his life.

Chozhan rescues the kids in the interim and brings them back to his village. Not before ordering Chozhan to finish Rajiv, Ramalingam passes away. Inside a skyscraper, Chozhan confronts Rajiv. Following a fierce struggle, Chozhan throws Rajiv off the structure and snatches him by the leg.

Towards the conclusion, he reveals the role Beijing corporates had in Anisha’s demise. After learning the truth, Rajiv is horrified and attempts to get Chozhan to help him up, but Chozhan throws him off the building, which causes his death. A few years later, Chozhan visits Ramalingam and Rajiv’s cemetery with his son and flowers.
