  • Introduce your profile to catch recruiters' attention;
  • Use professional templates and examples to make sure your mentor cover letter follows the best industry standards;

  • Emphasizing past leadership success: The cover letter highlights a significant achievement with a 40% increase in sales targets, showcasing the candidate's ability to lead teams to exceed sales goals.
  • Relevant industry experience: The author specifically mentions their background in the SaaS sector, which is directly applicable to a role in a similar industry, indicating a thorough understanding of the market and client needs.
  • Personalization of sales strategies: The candidate points out a successful implementation of personalized engagement protocols, demonstrating an innovative approach and an understanding of customer-centric tactics in the sales process.

The must-have sections and format of your mentor cover letter

When writing your mentor cover letter, keep in mind that it'll only be read by the recruiters and not the Applicant Tracker System (or software used to assess your profile). That's why you should structure your content with a/an:

  • Header (apart from your contact information, include your name, the role you're applying for, and the date);
  • Personalized salutation;
  • Opening paragraph to win the recruiters over;
  • Middle paragraph with key details;
  • Closing that starts from clichés;
  • Sign off (that's not mandatory).

Industry standards dictate your paragraphs to be single-spaced and to wrap your content in a one-inch margin. Designing your mentor cover letter, refer to one of our templates , which automatically takes care of the spacing and margins.

Choose the same font for your mentor cover letter as you did for your resume : the likes of Lato and Bitter would help you to stand out in a sea of cover letters in Arial or Times New Roman.

Export your whole mentor cover letter from our builder in PDF to keep the same formatting and image quality.

The top sections on a mentor cover letter

  • Header: This includes your contact information, the date, and the recipient's details, establishing a professional tone and making it easy for the recruiter to know who you are and how to contact you.
  • Greeting: A personalized greeting addressing the hiring manager or organization shows that you've done your research and are genuinely interested in the specific mentoring role.
  • Introduction: Quickly articulate why you're excited about the mentoring opportunity and how your background makes you a strong fit, capturing the recruiter's interest from the beginning.
  • Mentoring Experience and Approach: Detail your previous mentoring experiences, your teaching philosophy, and methods that demonstrate your suitability and passion for guiding others, which is central to the mentor role.
  • Closing and Call to Action: End with a strong closing statement that reiterates your enthusiasm for the role, and includes a call to action, encouraging the recruiter to get in touch for an interview or further discussion.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proven track record in mentorship or coaching: Demonstrates previous success and experience in guiding individuals towards their professional or personal growth objectives.
  • Strong communication and active listening skills: Essential for understanding mentees' needs, conveying advice effectively, and building rapport.
  • Extensive knowledge in the relevant field: Shows that the mentor has the expertise required to provide valuable insights and guidance.
  • Empathy and emotional intelligence: Helps in relating to the mentee’s situation, fostering trust, and creating a supportive mentoring relationship.
  • Leadership and inspirational ability: Inspires mentees to reach their potential through leading by example and providing motivational support.
  • Problem-solving and adaptability: Allows the mentor to help mentees navigate through challenges and adapt their mentoring techniques to suit individual needs and learning styles.

How to start your mentor cover letter: with a greeting, of course

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your mentor cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your mentor cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Title] [Last Name],
  • Dear [First Name],
  • Dear [First Name] [Last Name],
  • Dear Selection Committee,
  • Dear Members of the Search Committee,

Your mentor cover letter introduction and the value you bring

Moving on from the "Dear Recruiter" to your professional introduction .

Use those first two sentences of your mentor cover letter to present the biggest asset you'd bring to the organization.

Don't go into too much detail about your achievement or the skill set, but instead - go straight for the win.

That is - what is your value as a professional?

Would you be able to build stronger, professional relationships in any type of communication? Or, potentially, integrate seamlessly into the team?

The middle or body of your mentor cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story

Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your mentor cover letter, it's time to get down to business .

Hear us out, the body of your mentor cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.

Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.

Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.

Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.

In the undertones of your story or mentor cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.

Finishing off your mentor cover letter with what matters most

So far, you've done a fantastic job in tailoring your mentor cover letter for the role and recruiter.

Your final opportunity to make a good impression is your closing paragraph.

And, no, a "Sincerely yours" just won't do, as it sounds too vague and impersonal.

End your mentor cover letter with the future in mind.

So, if you get this opportunity, what do you plan to achieve? Be as specific, as possible, of what value you'd bring to the organization.

You could also thank recruiters for their interest in your profile and prompt for follow-up actions (and organizing your first interview).

Which story should you tell in your mentor cover letter when you have zero experience

Candidates, lacking professional experience in the field - this one is for you.

Your mentor cover letter is an exercise of integrity, honesty, and, above all, spinning a positive narrative around your strengths.

And what better way to capture recruiters' attention than with your most job-relevant achievement (this could be from your internship or volunteering experience)?

Make sure to back up your success with transferrable skills that are relevant to the job (e.g. how your year, studying abroad, has taught you to be more motivated and handle multicultural environments).

Another safe card you can bet on is your career dream: in the body of your mentor cover letter, go into the details of how your ambitions would help make the company you're applying for better.

Key takeaways

Writing your mentor cover letter doesn't need to turn into an endless quest, but instead:

  • Create an individual mentor cover letter for each role you apply to, based on job criteria (use our builder to transform your resume into a cover letter, which you could edit to match the job);
  • Stick with the same font you've used in your resume (e.g. Raleway) and ensure your mentor cover letter is single-spaced and has a one-inch margin all around;
  • Introduce your enthusiasm for the role or the company at the beginning of your mentor cover letter to make a good first impression;
  • Align what matters most to the company by selecting just one achievement from your experience, that has taught you valuable skills and knowledge for the job;
  • End your mentor cover letter like any good story - with a promise for greatness or follow-up for an interview.

Let us have an insightful look into the different tips to keep in mind while creating a cover letter for freshers:

  • Never restate anything that you have already mentioned in your resume.
  • Since you are a fresher, all you have as an asset is your education and your skills. Highlight these two factors most gracefully and cleverly possible.
  • After you draft your cover letter , make sure there are no grammatical errors.
  • Avoid making your cover letter too long and keep it limited to one page.
  • Never be dishonest at any point or brag about your qualities.
  • Think of a good conclusion and sign off with words such as, “Thanking You,” “Best Regards,” “Sincerely,” etc.
  • When writing a cover letter for fresher, be specific about the job role and description.

Fresher cover letter example

Fresher cover letter example

If you are a graduate, fresh out of university, ready to take your first steps in the wide world of work, some people might call you a “fresher.” It is not a common term in the United States, but in a global business community it is useful to know the phrase.

While freshers may have a tough time deciding what to write in their resume as they do not have so many concrete achievements to discuss, the fresher cover letter is a different matter. Here, hiring managers will hope to read about your career objectives and personality, as well as why you feel that the role and company is right for you.

No hiring manager is expecting miracles, and many will pay more attention to the exploratory cover letter than the artificially padded resume. Use the cover letter to give them a feel for who you are and what you are looking for in your early career. How do they fit it? Do your plans make sense to them? Do they feel that they will be able to make a difference to you?

How should your freshers cover letter differ from your resume? Well, to start with it may be worth looking at some examples of other cover letters. Our 180+ cover letter examples will help you to see how various professions approach this task? After you have an appreciation of what a cover letter entails, you should be able to appreciate the advice in this guide that bit better. Our fresher cover letter guide covers:

  • Writing a fresher cover letter to outline your career objectives
  • How to share your personality in the various sections
  • Ensuring a suitable format for the cover letter
  • Writing a fresher cover letter with no experience
  • Mistakes to avoid if you want to secure that interview

Here are some general cover letter examples to have a look at:

  • Scholarship
  • Library Assistant
  • Elementary teacher
  • Substitute Teacher
  • Teaching Assistant
  • Apprenticeship

Best format for a fresher cover letter

While your fresher job search story may have a different slant to that of a seasoned professional, the format of the cover letter should not vary from the norm. Hiring managers have certain expectations around how a cover letter should be set out. The standard format of any cover letter follows this structure:

  • The cover letter header
  • The greeting / salutation
  • The cover letter intro
  • The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
  • The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and call-to-action)

The core message of the cover letter should be that your aims and fledgling experience fit with the nature of the role and the direction of the company. It is also important that the hiring manager feels that they would get on with you. If your cover letter is devoid of personality, they will be suspicious. Your personality is one of your selling points, so don’t be afraid to share some details about who you are.

There are plenty of other things to consider when you are writing a cover letter. Our comprehensive cover letter guide explores all sorts of details that you might not consider. It is easy to obsess about your story and miss those little things that can nonetheless leave an impression. What font should you choose? What design is most effective?

When you have made some of these basic decisions, you are ready to go.

Dear Mr. McAdams,

I am writing to apply for the position of fresher at Macy's. I recently graduated from Concordia University Texas and am very enthusiastic about this opportunity.

Although I do not have any direct relevant work experience yet, I have developed valuable skills during my studies that would be applicable for this role. For example, for my graduation thesis research I [give brief description and mention relevant results/skills gained]. I also worked on [describe relevant project and your contributions] for [company name] as part of a college project.

I am a quick learner and motivated to acquire many new skills. Below I have highlighted some relevant qualities:

[List 2-3 relevant strengths, e.g. analytical thinking, excellent organizational abilities, experience with specific software programs etc.]

Language skills: [list languages and level of proficiency]

Valid driver’s license and own transportation

I would be excited to put these qualities to use for [company name] and look forward to the possibility to further discuss this vacancy and my motivation in a personal interview.

Awaiting your response,

[Your name]

Cover letter header

You might be a fresher, but there is no reason why your cover letter shouldn’t look the part. Choose a header design that is stylish but simple: avoid a fancy design that seeks to distract from your lack of experience. Let your content speak for itself.

The header should contain your full name, email, and mobile number. There is no need for your full home address as there are potential data protection and discrimination issues. You can share these details at the offer stage. The inside address of the employer is something that is old-fashioned and simply takes up valuable cover letter space.

Four-in-ten ages 25 and older have a bachelor's degree

Cover letter greeting

You might think that writing a greeting is not too tricky, but what if the name of the hiring manager or HR representative is not included in the job description?

First a warning: the old salutation “To whom it may concern” is now considered out-of-date and stale. “Dear Company team” is a warmer option that is more common these days. Better still, use your initiative to find out the name of the hiring manager or HR person. Give the company a call or ask a contact on social media. You need to be certain about this one, though. If in doubt, opt for the friendly and general greeting. Plenty of people will read the cover letter in any case.

Cover letter introduction

The introduction for a fresher cover letter should begin with your most relevant piece of work experience or volunteering. No matter how tenuous the link, you need to show that you have thought about transferable skills and that you have the potential to do the job. If you have nothing to share, maybe you should think about aiming a little lower or looking at other ways into the industry.

Show that you have planned your way into your chosen career and that you are good at picking up new skills and learning from your experiences. It is no good having potential if you have not got a track record of being coachable.

Cover letter middle part (body)

The middle part of the fresher cover letter should contain two main aspects of your application: your career objectives and your personality.

Writing a paragraph about how this particular role will fit into your early career will reveal much about your motivation. Make sure that you tailor it carefully for each position and analyze the job description to pick out the bits that fit best with you.

In terms of personality, describing yourself in simple adjectives is not helpful. Anyone can reel off a list of attributes that they think the hiring manager would value. Instead, tell a couple of stories that illustrate you and your qualities. This will form a great introduction to further explorations at interview. A fresher with stories to tell is someone who is not afraid to open themselves up to a potential new boss. Give the hiring manager something to think about.

How to close a fresher cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)

End with one last story for the hiring manager to remember. They will likely be reading plenty of other cover letters, so make them want to linger on yours for that bit longer. Maybe even re-read some sections?

The final lines of a cover letter should then include your desire to find out more about the role at a potential interview. This call-to-action should be expressed in hope rather than expectation, but it will certainly make them think about sending that interview invite.

Fresher cover letter with no experience

It is clear that some freshers will have minimal work experience. Some are so focused on their studies that work has long taken a back seat in terms of their priorities. If you have no experience to speak of, try to share moments from your education when you had to show the qualities that may be required in a job. Every student needs to deal with stress, overcome objectives, communicate with people and present their work. You might have more to talk about than you think. Be as creative as you can be. Hiring managers will understand.

Basic mistakes in a fresher application letter (and how to avoid them)

With the amount of academic work that they’ve recently faced, freshers should understand the impact of mistakes. When hiring managers do not have too much to judge within an application, attention to detail is one of those things that simple should be spot on.

  • Grammar errors. Check for grammar mistakes with online software such as Grammarly. Get a friend or family member to proofread the document if possible.
  • Maintain a formal tone. You might be relatively chatty with your long-term clients, but this is not a tone that you should convey in the cover letter.

Key takeaways

  • Share your objectives, personality, and transferable skills.
  • Study the job description and make your fresher cover letter relevant.
  • Tell the stories that you wish to repeat at interview.
  • Choose an attractive cover letter template. Check out our cover letter templates .

How to write a cover letter for fresher graduate?

1. start with a professional heading & personalized greeting.

The contact detail is the most crucial part of the cover letter. Hence, a perfect cover letter always starts with personal information at the top of the document . Remember, hiring managers go through many cover letters and CVs daily, so try to keep yours as crisp as possible by keeping all the essential data easily visible.

Additionally, address the employer with their name in the cover letter. If you don’t know the person, a brief search on LinkedIn or the company website would help. It not only adds a personalized touch but also leaves an excellent first impression.

Here’s a quick checklist of what goes in your cover letter header :

  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Current date
  • Hiring manager’s full name and title in the company

2. Introduce yourself clearly in the opening paragraph

The opening paragraph is the make-or-break part of a cover letter. Imagine you are in a salon’s waiting room with several magazines on the table before you. You will likely pick the one with the most intriguing cover and headline. The same applies to a powerful opening paragraph.

That’s why it is advisable to add a touch of enthusiasm while crafting a cover letter. However, be mindful that your enthusiasm shouldn’t come across as desperation. Keep it subtle and move on to further description. Give your clear introduction, the position you’re interested in, and where you learned about the specific job post.

3. Focus on your hard skills & achievements in the fresher cover letter

After a clear and concise intro, it’s time to put your skills on the show in your fresher cover letter. But first, carefully review the job description and then craft the body paragraph tailored to the specific requirements. Although it might be a bit more challenging for a fresher to add previous experience, with the right choice of words, you can still craft a stellar cover letter, even with minimum information.

Here is a quick breakdown of all the skills and achievements you can highlight in your cover letter for fresher graduates :

  • Internships : If you have done internships during college or are currently working in a company, it will be a plus point in your fresher cover letter. Make sure you highlight all the hard skills supported by the tasks you are responsible for. For instance, if you are mentioning the hard skill copywriting, do mention that you manage social media copywriting for 3 clients.
  • Attended seminars or workshops: List down the seminars or workshops you have attended, especially those that bring value to the job.
  • Certifications: Certifications enhances credibility; hence they are an asset for beginners. Mention the certifications that provide you with relevant knowledge or skill set for the specific job.

4. Highlight your soft skills in the cover letter for fresher

This body paragraph is your chance to convince the hiring manager that you will be a good fit for the job. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have significant hard skills to mention yet; you have a lot to tell when it comes to soft or human skills .

Make a list of all the qualities that sets you apart. Be it your problem-solving nature, exceptional analytical skills, communication, time management, creativity, or emotional intelligence, try to concisely include each quality in this paragraph. However, whichever quality you mention, support it with an example .

5. Leave a call to action in the closing paragraph

Your cover letter for fresher has everything , now it’s time to end it with a call to action that prompts the employer to contact you. Remember, the cover letter you started with sheer enthusiasm should be concluded on a positive note. In the closing paragraph, you should sound confident about why you are the best fit for the job post.

6. Thank them for their time & sign-off

Finish your cover letter by thanking the hiring manager for their time and consideration . Moreover, mention salutations such as “sincerely,” “faithfully,” or “kind regards.” Lastly, write your name if it’s an email, whereas, for hard copy, it’s a best practice to leave your signature along with the name. Once you have finished your cover letter, make sure you edit and proofread it to rectify any mistakes.

Showcase Internships and Projects: Discuss internships, volunteer work, or personal projects that demonstrate your practical skills and eagerness to learn.

Tailor Your Skills: Highlight soft skills such as adaptability, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These skills are valuable in any role.

Express Enthusiasm: Use your cover letter to convey your genuine interest in the company and the position. Mention specific aspects of the company that excite you.

Customize Each Application: Customize your cover letter for each job application to demonstrate your alignment with the job requirements and company culture.

Seek Feedback: Ask mentors, professors, or career advisors for feedback on your cover letter to ensure it effectively represents your qualifications and enthusiasm.

A6: Including your LinkedIn profile or additional contact information in your cover letter is optional but can be beneficial. Here's when and how to do it:

LinkedIn Profile : If your LinkedIn profile is complete and professional, consider including it in your cover letter. It allows employers to learn more about your professional background, skills, and endorsements. Place it at the end of your cover letter, typically beneath your signature.

Additional Contact Information: If you have alternative ways to be reached, such as a secondary email address or a phone number that you check regularly, you can provide this information. However, ensure that the additional contact information is professional and regularly monitored.

Including these details can make it easier for employers to contact you if they decide to move forward with your application.

A7: If you don't know the hiring manager's name, it's best to use a generic salutation. Here are some common salutations you can use:

"Dear Hiring Manager,"

"Dear [Company Name] Hiring Team,"

"To Whom It May Concern," (Use this as a last resort, as it's less personal.)

While addressing the hiring manager by name is ideal, these alternatives are acceptable when you don't have access to the specific name.

A8: Yes, a well-crafted cover letter can be a valuable tool for addressing employment gaps or career changes. Here's how:

Employment Gaps: In your cover letter, briefly mention the reason for any employment gaps and focus on how you used that time productively. For example, you can explain that you took time off to care for a family member or pursued additional education or training.

Career Changes: When transitioning to a new career, emphasize transferable skills and experiences that make you a suitable candidate for the new role. Explain your motivation for making the change and how your background uniquely positions you for success in the new field.

By proactively addressing these aspects in your cover letter, you demonstrate transparency and a willingness to discuss your career journey with potential employers.

A9: It's a good practice to send a cover letter with every job application, even if it's not explicitly required. A well-crafted cover letter can set you apart from other applicants and showcase your enthusiasm for the position. It also provides an opportunity to tailor your application to the specific job and company, demonstrating that you've taken the time to research and understand their needs.

In cases where a job posting explicitly states that a cover letter is optional, it's still advisable to include one unless you have a strong reason not to.

A10: To assess the effectiveness of your cover letter, consider the following:

Relevance: Does your cover letter directly address the job requirements and company's needs?

Clarity: Is your cover letter well-organized, free of grammatical errors, and concise?

Engagement: Does your cover letter captivate the reader's attention and express your enthusiasm for the role?

Alignment: Does your cover letter align with your resume in terms of experiences, skills, and qualifications?

Personalization: Is your cover letter customized for each job application?

Seek feedback from trusted individuals, such as mentors or career advisors, to gain additional insights into the effectiveness of your cover letter. Additionally, tracking your job application success rates can help you refine your cover letter-writing skills over time.

Crafting an effective cover letter is a valuable skill that can enhance your job search success. By following the steps outlined in this comprehensive guide, customizing your cover letters, and seeking feedback, you can create compelling cover letters that leave a lasting impression on potential employers. Remember that a well-written cover letter can be the key to unlocking exciting career opportunities.

4. Highlight Your Skills and Education: As a fresher, your academic background is your biggest asset. Discuss relevant coursework, projects, or research. Highlight the skills you’ve acquired that are relevant to the job.

5. Discuss Internships or Relevant Experiences:  If you’ve had internships or part-time jobs, discuss these experiences. Highlight how they’ve prepared you for the role you’re applying for.

6. Show Enthusiasm: Convey your excitement about the opportunity. Explain why you’re interested in the role and the company.

7. Closing: Thank the hiring manager for considering your application. Express your interest in further discussing your qualifications.

8. Professional Sign Off: End the letter professionally with a “Sincerely” or “Best regards,” followed by your name.

What do you write in a Cover Letter with No Experience?

When writing a cover letter with no experience, focus on your skills, education, and potential instead of your lack of work history.

1. Start with a Strong Opening: Clearly state your purpose for writing. Mention the position you’re interested in and why you’re the right fit, despite having no experience.

2. Highlight Academic Achievements: Discuss your educational background and any relevant coursework or projects. Highlight how these have equipped you with skills applicable to the job.

3. Focus on Transferable Skills: Discuss any skills you’ve gained from other experiences like volunteering, clubs, sports, or school projects. Show how these can transfer to the work setting.

4. Show Your Enthusiasm: Display a strong interest in the job and the company. Employers often value motivation and enthusiasm as much as experience.

5. Include a Strong Closing: State your desire for an interview and thank the hiring manager for considering your application.

Tips for Fresher Cover Letter

1. Be Specific: Tailor your cover letter to each job you’re applying for. Show you’ve done your research by mentioning specifics about the company or role.

2. Highlight Relevant Skills: Identify the key skills mentioned in the job description and highlight these in your cover letter. Provide examples of how you’ve used these skills.

3. Keep it Concise: A cover letter should not exceed one page. Keep it concise and to the point, but make sure to include all relevant information.

4. Use a Professional Tone: Even though you’re a fresher, maintain a professional tone throughout the letter. This shows your readiness for the workplace.

5. Proofread: Ensure your cover letter is free of errors. Proofreading shows attention to detail, a quality appreciated by employers.

How to Write a Cover Letter With No Experience (Examples Included!)

Getty Images

Writing a cover letter with no experience might feel like an intimidating task. The anxiety of facing a blank page—often with that inner voice whispering you may not be qualified enough—can indeed be paralyzing. But guess what? We’ve all been there, and trust me, you can do it too.

Everyone who has a job today started with no experience and had to write their first cover letter . Some of us even did it in a time when technology wasn’t around to help out (thankfully, things have changed!).

Need some guidance on writing yours? Here is everything you need to know to craft a cover letter with no experience, plus examples to guide you through the process.

What is a cover letter?

First things first: A cover letter is a document that you send to introduce yourself when applying for a job or internship. It complements your resume, providing more insight into who you are and the skills and qualifications that make you perfect for the role.

Think of it like a virtual handshake with the hiring manager. It’s your first interaction and your chance to quickly introduce yourself to secure an interview. Together with your resume , the cover letter is your opportunity to make a strong impression.

Why should you write a cover letter

Writing a cover letter, even if you lack experience, can set you apart from other candidates. It gives you space to delve more deeply into the skills and qualifications mentioned on your resume.

“Rather than focusing on what you have not accomplished yet in your career, focus on what you bring to the table: your skills, competencies, personality traits, and the values that you have developed in your life and education,” says Eloïse Eonnet , career coach and communication skills expert.

How to write a cover letter with no experience: 7 tips

When writing your cover letter, keep in mind your goal: leaving a positive first impression on the reader. It should include relevant information for the position you're applying for and maintain a professional yet engaging tone.

That’s your chance to convince the recruiter that you are the right person for the job and schedule an interview. “So, make sure you are clear on what skills and competencies you bring, and what personality traits make you a great fit,” says Eonnet.

If you still feel stuck and don’t know where to start, here's our seven-step guide on how to write a cover letter with no experience:

1. Check the company and job description

The first step in crafting a well-written cover letter is to research the company where you want to work. Carefully review what the organization shares about its values and culture on social media or its website to understand how you can relate to it in your letter.

The job description should also be examined closely because it typically includes keywords that you can incorporate into your cover letter when explaining your skills and competencies.

2. Include contact details

Mastering the cover letter format is as important as the content itself. Traditionally, a cover letter begins with your name and contact details—ensuring that if the recruiter decides to interview you, the information will be visible and easy to find.

And below your information, right before your opening paragraph, should be the hiring manager contact details. This format is considered more professional and is what is typically expected from candidates.

For example:

[Your First and Last Name]

[Phone number]

[Optional, unless it’s asked for: Your address]

[Date you're sending the letter]

[Hiring managers First and Last Name]

3. Begin with a friendly yet professional greeting

Remember, a cover letter is your initial interaction with the hiring manager, but in a virtual setting. Like in the real world, you begin with a greeting and then proceed to introduce yourself.

Choose a formal greeting such as “ Dear First and Last Name” , avoiding casual words like “ Hi” or “ Hey” to keep a professional tone. After that, you can start your first paragraph by introducing yourself and stating the position you are applying for.

Dear Lucia Carter,

My name is Alana Reeves, and I’m excited to apply for the Copywriter position at ABC Agency, which I discovered on LinkedIn. As a recent graduate from Columbia University, I’d be thrilled to work for a company that aligns with [Company’s values and/or culture].

4. Highlight relevant qualifications

Now, it’s time to showcase that you have what it takes to fulfill the desired position. When writing a cover letter with no experience, the key is to emphasize any relevant skills and competencies, detailing how they were developed.

“If a candidate has no work experience to pull from, I suggest that they talk about projects they completed at school, courses they took, extracurricular activities and community based projects they focused on, and even personal life events and projects they have experienced,” says Eonnet.

Filter what’s most relevant to the role you’re applying for and create a link between your skills and the job description.

“ Since my first semester at school, I’ve cultivated a passion for producing digital content for companies and institutions. I acted on this by creating a blog for the Mass Communication's website, where I wrote stories that captured the daily lives of the students on campus and the Columbia University culture. I also created a series providing recommendations of books, websites, films and TV shows relevant to a Mass Communication graduate.”

5. Showcase hard and soft skills

At this point, you’ve probably heard about hard and soft skills , right? Hard skills are technical abilities or knowledge that you can acquire through education, work experience, or training, whereas soft skills are linked to behavior and interpersonal relationships.

Recruiters seek candidates with a good mix of both types of skills, and the second and third paragraphs of your cover letter are perfect to show that you have what they are looking for.

“Show, do’’t tell! Rather than list your traits, they need to be in context of your past experience, even if it’s not official ’work experience,’” says Eonnet. So, use what you know about the company to show why you’re a good fit—be sure to explain how your skills match their needs.

“ During my four years as a blog content creator, I developed a strong understanding of SEO strategy, creative copywriting, and data analysis using Google Analytics, attracting approximately 1000 monthly visitors to the blog. I also applied my communication and self-management skills by interviewing students and managing the content by myself.”

If you have any top accomplishments, whether personal or academic, you can also include them in this section of your cover letter.

6. Close professionally

Wrap up your cover letter by reiterating your interest in the position and closing with a professional sign-off . You can use an engaging and friendly tone—and even ask for an interview—but don’t go overboard. Avoid overly casual language like “See you soon” or “Cheers”.

“I’m impressed by ABC Agency’s culture and creative approach to copywriting. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further in an interview.

Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards,

Alana Reeves”

7. Proofread carefully

This should go without saying, but make sure to submit a flawless letter free from grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. Unfortunately, even great candidates can be overlooked if their cover letter or resume has too many mistakes.

To avoid this, take time to proofread your writing before submission. Remember, you’re not the only one job hunting, and recruiters probably go through tons of cover letters and resumes daily. Anything less than impeccable could be a deal-breaker.

I’m excited to apply for the marketing internship position at ABC Agency. As a recent graduate from Columbia University, I’m eager to delve deeper into marketing strategies and their role in the business world.

In addition to my commitment to college studies, over the past year, I’ve completed courses in digital marketing essentials and inbound marketing. I’ve also been actively involved in extracurricular activities, creating content and promoting student events across multiple platforms. These experiences have not only expanded my creativity but also enhanced my teamwork skills.

I’m enthusiastic about the prospect of joining your marketing team, as I’m an admirer of your creative marketing campaigns and ABC Agency’s commitment to social responsibility. I'm confident in my ability to contribute to your growth by offering innovative solutions and fresh perspectives for the business.

I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further.

2# Sample cover letter for job with no experience

My name is Alana Reeves, and I’m writing to express my interest in the entry-level social media management position at ABC Agency, which I discovered on LinkedIn. As a recent graduate with a major in Mass Communication from Columbia University, I am eager to apply my education in a dynamic and innovative company like yours.

During my four years of undergraduate studies, I initiated and managed a TikTok and Instagram page to share my study routine. I was successful in creating a community of 5,000 followers, including students from Columbia University and other universities nationwide.

This experience equipped me with a robust understanding of content creation, image and video editing, community management, and social media analytics. I strengthened my self-management and organization skills, effectively balancing my academic responsibilities with this project.

Being an admirer of ABC Agency’s creative and humorous content, I am enthusiastic about the prospect of contributing to your team. I believe I can bring fresh ideas and an innovative approach to enhance your social media presence.

What to avoid when writing your cover letter

Understanding what not to say is also helpful when crafting a cover letter without experience. Here are two things to steer clear of:

Don’t be too apologetic

It’s easy to fall into the trap of downplaying your past experiences just because they weren’t formal jobs. However, you should—or at least try to—avoid this negative and overly apologetic approach at all costs.

“I would definitely avoid qualifying any past experience (school projects, odd jobs, internships, community service, personal projects) as ’not work experience.’ I see candidates use an apologetic tone sometimes, which is counterproductive.” says Eonnet.

Don’t focus on your lack of experience

If you’re searching for tips on how to write a cover letter with no experience, examples and such, chances are you're applying for an entry level position. In this case, avoid dedicating too much space in your letter to the fact that you haven’t had a traditional job.

“Recruiters who are looking to fill an entry-level role do not expect you to have a bunch of full-time work experience. Rather, they’re looking for candidates who are self-aware, ready to work, and interested in the position.” says Eonnet.

I am a native French speaker with proficiency in German and English, and basic knowledge of Spanish. I have previous experience working as a Nanny at Cranley Nurseries, Inc., where I supervised multiple children, facilitated activities, and maintained a safe and nurturing environment. My responsibilities included driving children to and from the nursery, communicating with parents, and promoting healthy habits.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my skills and experiences align with the needs of your organization. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Gabrielle Faber

A fresher is a candidate with no professional experience in the field. These job applicants may still be in college or have recently graduated. It is the best practice for a fresher to research the role they want to pursue and build a strong case to be considered by the company. Presenting their minimal work experience, such as an internship or a training, freshers can often be considered professionals by their prospective employers, and thus raise their chances of being hired.
