Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Praxis Research

The D.Eng. program is flexible enough to provide opportunities for both discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary research. A doctoral committee consisting of a minimum of three faculty members (with three members on graduate faculty at Penn State) will oversee the research. When pertinent to the student’s praxis topic area and personal circumstances, an additional member can be added as a “special outside industry member” from the associated industry, military, organization, or governmental function. This doctoral committee will require demonstration of analytical and critical thinking, consistent with the expectations for a doctoral research program.

The program culminates with a 15-credit praxis research project focused on applied research executed in a real-world industry environment. You will identify an industry problem and use applied research methods to develop and present a proposed solution.

This research methods course focuses on the development of competencies required to become a successful professional researcher in engineering fields.

Descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, power, estimation, confidence intervals, regression, one- and 2-way ANOVA, Chi-square tests, diagnostics.

Analysis of research data through simple and multiple regression and correlation; polynomial models; indicator variables; step-wise, piece-wise, and logistic regression.

Analysis of multivariate data; T-squared tests; partial correlation; discrimination; MANOVA; cluster analysis; regression; growth curves; factor analysis; principal components; canonical correlations.

Praxis Research (15 credits)

Provides Doctor of Engineering students with the opportunity to identify an applied research problem and develop a praxis research project to address the problem/question. Students will investigate the literature relevant to the selected area(s) of interest. Students will develop and implement a comprehensive praxis research project to address the problem. Students will also disseminate the results in both a scholarly presentation (final oral exam) and praxis (final praxis research document).

Residency Experiences

As a Penn State World Campus Doctor of Engineering in Engineering student, you will fulfill major program milestones during a campus residency.

Residency Requirement and Program Milestones

The online Doctor of Engineering in Engineering program requires you to spend a total of five days on campus. Major program milestones include the qualifying exam, comprehensive exam, and praxis defense. The full residency requirement can be met by attending a single five-day campus residency or multiple shorter on-campus residencies that combine to a minimum of five days. 

Immediately prior to each fall semester, the D.Eng. program will hold an optional two-day orientation on the Penn State University Park campus that can count toward part of the residency requirement. Residency days can also be obtained through visits to campus for research meetings with praxis faculty, students, and researchers; attendance in lab group meetings; on-campus workshops; and organized D.Eng. program–specific professional development activities that will be offered at least once per semester for those in the program and to the broader community. Some of these days may also be spent in fulfillment of major program milestones, including your qualifying exam, comprehensive exam, and praxis defense.

Complete your application and submit all required materials by the appropriate deadline. Your deadline will depend on the semester you plan to start your courses.

For admission to the J. Jeffrey and Ann Marie Fox Graduate School, you must hold either (1) a master of science or master of engineering degree in a suitable engineering or related technical field from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or (2) a tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a master’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution. This degree must be from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates. Students should have earned at least a 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in their master’s program.

2. Gather your required materials.

Applications are submitted electronically and include a nonrefundable application fee. You will need to upload the following items as part of your application:

Official transcripts from each institution attended, regardless of the number of credits or semesters completed. Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. Penn State alumni do not need to request transcripts for credits earned at Penn State but must list Penn State as part of your academic history. If you are admitted, you will be asked to send an additional official transcript. You will receive instructions at that time.

GPA and Test Scores — All applicants are expected to have earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Statement of Professional Goals — This statement should be concise and well-written. It should reflect your academic interests, research/praxis plan, and motivation, as well as how these further your career objectives. Please include the following sections in your statement:

Academic Interests (about half a page) — Discuss your academic interest in this D.Eng. program. In addition, propose a course work plan (i.e., review the program’s electives and discuss which courses would be most effective to help reach your praxis research and professional goals).

Praxis Research Interests and Rationale (about 1 page) — The praxis research should apply what you come to the program with and will learn in this program (methods/technology/theory) to research and solve a significant/complex problem from your work. The goal of this section is to describe to the admissions committee a problem you have identified and the research plan, goals, and deliverables, and how these will be supported. In other words, this section should reflect your ability to effectively communicate the maturity of your research aspirations.

This section should include:

  • Problem motivation (i.e., background of the problem/how do you know this is a problem that should be addressed via the praxis?)
  • Problem statement/hypothesis (i.e., one or two sentences stating what specific problem this praxis research is going to solve)
  • Project purpose (i.e., describe how the praxis research will generally address the problem)
  • Project plan goals (i.e., a bulleted list of what will be analyzed, designed/researched, and implemented)
  • Project deliverables (i.e., what could ultimately be delivered as the solution to this problem, in addition to the required written praxis)

Career Objectives (about half a page) — This section should communicate a synergy between the education and praxis research accomplished in this program with your career/professional goals.

English Proficiency  — The language of instruction at Penn State is English. With some exceptions, international applicants must take and submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Minimum test scores and exceptions are found in the English Proficiency section on the  Fox Graduate School's "Requirements for Graduate Admission" page . Visit the  TOEFL website  for testing information. Penn State's institutional code is 2660.

References (3)  — References should provide academic and professional perspectives. You will need to initiate the process through the online application by entering names, email addresses, and mailing addresses of three references. Upon submission of your application, an email will be sent to each reference requesting they complete a brief online recommendation regarding your commitment to success in an online program. Please inform all recommenders they must submit the form in order for your application to be complete.

At least one reference should be from your employer indicating they support the praxis topic and specifying what resources you will have access to in support of the topic, e.g., allocated time, lab support, data. This reference letter would ideally come from the immediate or area supervisor of the applicant.

Writing Sample — Provide a published or unpublished paper, thesis, or another scholarly writing sample.  This sample must be in English.

Interview — You will be asked to participate in an interview, either via internet-based video conferencing or in person.

Program Overview

The Ph.D. in Engineering Management is designed to prepare rising scholars and researchers to develop unique knowledge that expands the field of engineering management. Engineering management at GW is concerned with interactions among management, policy, and technology development; management for risk and resilience; and the management of design and operations for socio-technical systems.

Students work directly with a faculty advisor to formulate their research focus, write and publish their dissertation, as well as participate actively in professional and research-focused conferences in the field of engineering management and systems engineering.

The Ph.D. program is based on GW’s main campus in Washington, D.C. (Foggy Bottom), which lies in close proximity to a wide array of federal agencies and other organizations with significant engineering management challenges and interests. Faculty and doctoral students have built collaborative relationships that benefit from and support these organizations.

Admissions Requirements

  • If applicant has obtained a master’s degree, a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (on a scale of 4.0) is required.

The Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management is designed for practitioners who wish to apply the knowledge they gain in a technical management environment. Unlike a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), wherein research is focused on foundational work that is published, the D.Eng. requires solving a real-world problem using the latest engineering management concepts and tools. The program culminates in a praxis for use by practicing engineers to address a common concern or challenge.

The PhD in Engineering Management focuses on developing skills needed to conduct rigorous research in areas related to the improvement, design, and management of projects and programs within complex human-technological systems. Students take 10 courses before beginning a dissertation research project, including five core courses that establish a foundation of knowledge from which each student can explore their area of interest. Core courses are Engineering Supply Chain, Operations Research, Project Management, Strategic Economic Decision Making, and Seminar/Research Methods for Engineering Management. After the core is complete, a plan of study is developed in consultation with a research advisor that considers the dissertation research of the student. Whether you pursue your studies on campus or fully online, you will work regularly with your advisor, a content expert in your field of interest. You can be confident that you will have support throughout your educational journey.

Admissions requirements.

Candidates for the PhD in Engineering Management should possess a master’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline. A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5 (4.0 scale) will be required for admission. A GRE score* from the last five years, with a combined verbal and quantitative score of at least a 300 with a quantitative score in at least the top 40 th  percentile will be required for consideration.  Candidates below established GPA and GRE requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates whose primary language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English . Applicants must also have evidence of completion of a probability and statistics course with a grade of at least a “B” and be able to demonstrate competence in at least one structured programming language (R, Python, C++, etc.).

*The College of Engineering will consider waiving the GRE requirement based on progressive industry experience, academic performance, a recommendation from a research advisor, and an interview. The interview can be scheduled at any point during the application process by emailing Dr. Christian Salmon, Department Chair for Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, at [email protected] .

Admissions Process

How are courses offered?

Course Delivery: In-class or online* Total Credits: 57-72

Options for attending courses include fully in-class, fully online, as well as hybrid in-class and online to accommodate work and family. All lectures will be captured and available for online review. The program will capture all lecture-based presentations using the echo360 lecture capture system.

If you are interested in completing the program fully online, you will have an initial consultation with the Department Chair to discuss your goals and how an online approach could work for you, with particular attention to dissertation requirements. Once enrolled in program, you will be paired with a faculty advisor who will be a content expert in their field based on your research interests.

*International candidates will be required to attend in-class sessions in order to be in compliance with student visa requirements.

Program Goals & Philosophy

Goals/Principles

The goal of the program is to prepare graduates with the appropriate technical depth and breadth of knowledge so that they may be successful educators, researches, and practitioners in the management of complex human technological systems. The program will follow three principles in pursuit of this goal. In addition to passing the required coursework, students must also pass a comprehensive examination to demonstrate a mastery of Principles 1 and 2.

Principle 1: Provide a Solid Foundation and Depth in Engineering Management Theory and Practice

A solid fundamental understanding of a field is essential in order for students to be considered an expert in that field. This is true for Engineering Management as well. It is the fundamentals that a student will need to expand upon in order to contribute new knowledge to the field of engineering management. We place an emphasis on the fundamentals of the management of complex human technological systems and an emphasis on the modeling and analysis of such systems.

Principle 2: Provide Breadth Across Multiple Types of Human Technological Systems

Principles, tools, and fundamentals of engineering management have been rooted in engineering and manufacturing systems. These tools have also been successfully applied to other systems such as service and transportation/logistical systems. Today engineering managers can be increasingly found in banks, hospitals, amusement parks, airlines, and a variety of delivery agencies. On the surface, these industries appear different however; they all involve people, materials, information, equipment, energy, and capital. Therefore, the program will emphasize case studies and examples within the coursework that are applications in the following three areas: 

  • Engineering and Manufacturing Systems
  • Service Systems
  • Logistical Systems

Principle 3: Contribute to the body of Knowledge in Engineering Management

A requirement of any Doctorate of Philosophy Program in Engineering is the expectation that graduating students will contribute to the body of knowledge in their chosen field by conducting research. This will be demonstrated by graduating students successfully completing a doctoral dissertation. Students conducting dissertation research will be guided by a selected advisor and advisory committee. Students must pass a dissertation approval examination in order to ensure they are prepared to conduct research. Upon the successful completion of research, graduating students will document the research results in a dissertation. Dissertations will be defended in front of advisory committees.

Methodology

In order to rank the best online PhD programs in engineering management, we started by researching all of the schools in the country that offer relevant degrees. In order to be eligible for placement in this ranking, each school had to have proper accreditation, not operate as a for-profit institution, be based in the United States and had to offer at least one relevant program online whether fully-online or in a hybrid format.

Once we had collected a list of schools, we assigned them a score based on three factors:

  • Freshman Retention Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Graduation Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Affordability (⅓ of final score)

Each factor could have an individual score of 100 points, which were then added together to get the composite score we used to rank each school . The maximum possible score was 300 points. We collected all of this information from the school’s website when it was available. In some cases, we also used the databases of the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. News & World Report , and Niche.com. All of the cost data used to calculate affordability and provide you with the average cost of attendance for each school was collected from CollegeData.com. Once each school was scored, they were placed in order accordingly.

We’d like to mention that no school we have featured in this ranking (or in any of our other articles) has been given preferential treatment for any reason. Some schools may not be present due to incomplete information or according to their own request; however, the results we reached can typically be repeated by following the methodology above.

PhD in Systems Engineering

Colorado State University offers an online PhD in Systems Engineering. This program requires 72 credits beyond undergraduate study, and it is geared towards those of you who are already in management level positions. While this doesn’t focus directly on management, it is a highly customizable degree which is why we opted to include it. You work with an advisor to mold the program to fit your personal interests and professional goals.

This is a multidisciplinary degree program that covers topics in information technology and project management, engineering risk analysis, systems engineering processes, and more. By working with your advisors, you can structure the program in such a way that it helps you to learn as much as you can about management and how to apply that to your career and use your skills to advance.

This degree program is customizable in other ways too. Many of the courses offer optional in-person instruction for those who are close to campus; you can also choose from synchronous or asynchronous delivery formats for many of the courses. You can also switch it up and take some classes live and complete others according to your schedule. The degree is available entirely online; however, some dissertations may have to be defended in person.

PhD in Industrial & Systems Engineering with a concentration in Engineering Management

University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee offers an online PhD program in Industrial Systems & Engineering with a concentration in Engineering Management. The entirety of the core coursework, as well as all of the requirements for the concentration, can be completed online. For those who already hold a master’s degree, this program will require you to complete between 24 and 36 credits. If you have not yet obtained your master’s degree, your requirements will be unique to you based on your academic experience.

The curriculum of the program is designed to help you synthesize your technical knowledge and experience with the critical components of management and to cultivate a deeper understanding of business. You will cover topics in project management, financial management, organizational behavior, quality improvement, and more.

This online PhD in Engineering Management is completed asynchronously through videotaped lectures and interactive distance learning assignments and other digital course materials. The majority of the courses you take are ones that you select in collaboration with an advisor, making sure that you get the most relevant education that you can apply directly to your professional environment.

PhD in Systems & Engineering Management

Texas Tech University

Texas Tech University is home to an online PhD in Systems and Engineering Management. The mission of the program is to equip graduates with all that they need to excel in engineering management in the industry, as consultants, or educators and researchers. It is presented in a hybrid format, so there is some on-campus instruction required in order to complete all of the requirements to earn your degree.

The on-campus requirements include two summer residency terms. Each of them takes place over the summer and last for a duration of two weeks each. While this is unquestionably mandatory, the remainder of your courses and all of the electives are offered online. This is a 72-credit program. Your core courses account for 30 of those credits and include subjects like Productivity and Performance Improvement in Organizations, Advanced Theoretical Studies in Systems Management, Research Methods in Science and Technology, and more.

You will work with an advisor to create a minor for this program, and that will fulfill another 30 credits. Your dissertation research accounts for the remaining twelve credits. Your minor can center around the field that you want to work on, or you can use it to explore other areas of engineering management and business to help prepare you for a career change. You are not required to have an engineering degree in order to be eligible to apply; however, there are some prerequisites that are considered mandatory. PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering

The University of Alabama Huntsville offers a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a specialization in Engineering Management. This is a hybrid program. UAH describes their hybrid programs as being 51% or greater presented online. Unfortunately, the information as to what courses you’ll take online and what the on-campus requirements are were not available on the program website.

This degree consists of a total of 78 credits. The first component of the degree is the engineering major. This includes courses such as Engineering Management Theory, Engineering Project Management, Research Methods in Survey Development, Engineering Management Structures and Systems, and more. You’ll also take 15 credits of supporting courses.

You will take 15 credits of a supporting minor. Current options for areas of study are Industrial Engineering, Quality Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Systems Simulation, Operations Research, and Human Factors. Other areas of study may be approved, but they must be cohesive, designed with the support of your advisors, and approved by a committee. You will take a second minor in mathematics and statistics. Coursework accounts for 60 credits; the remaining 18 are reserved for your dissertation.

Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management

George Washington University

George Washington University is home to an online Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management. This degree is centered on application rather than research. You will use modern engineering management tools and key concepts to solve a real-world problem rather than conduct research that is more theoretical. The program culminates in a praxis or case study rather than a dissertation.

This degree is presented in a format that is meant to suit the average working professionals. You will take synchronous courses on Saturdays and have 24/7 access to your other course materials so that you can study according to your own schedule. You also have the benefit of earning your degree from one of the largest engineering management programs nationwide.

You will progress through this online engineering management degree program in a cohort model. It consists of a total of 45 credits, and the courses are all taught via distance learning. The curriculum includes topics in data analysis, knowledge management, technology marketing, entrepreneurship, and more. While class attendance is expected, there are morning and afternoon classes. All lectures are also available online after the session has ended.

PhD in Technology Management

Indiana State University is the host university of an online PhD in Technology Management program that is presented in a consortium of the four other universities. The universities that partner with ISU include North Carolina A&T State University, Bowling Green State University, East Carolina University, and the University of Central Missouri. ISU describes the program as being primarily online and consisting of 66 credit hours. There are five areas of study to choose from, which are Construction Management, Digital Communications, Human Resource Development, and Industrial Training, Manufacturing Systems, and Quality Systems.

The on-campus requirements for the program include two ‘long-weekend’ executive style seminars. One of these is to be completed early on in the program, and the other is to be completed when students are close to being finished with their coursework. As for the program of study, it is student-specific, and you will carefully develop your degree plan with an advisor, exploring the available courses to maximize career relevancy of the degree you earn.

Online students of this program are eligible for financial aid. Because each program is highly specific to each student’s career needs, it is difficult to determine the amount of time it will take you to complete your degree; however, most students can complete the program in just four and a half years of part-time study. Once all of your coursework is completed, you will be required to complete and defend a dissertation successfully in order to graduate.

Western New England University offers a PhD in Engineering Management. This program has been designed to prepare its graduates for success as researchers, practitioners, or educators. This is a hybrid program that will require an extensive amount of traditional instruction that is supplemented with online instruction and learning modules.

In order to complete the program, students are required to complete at least 30 credits hours beyond their master’s degree as well as a minimum of 27 credit hours for their dissertation. Core courses you will take as part of this program are Optimization Methods, Design of Experiments, Project Management, Research Methods for Engineering Management, and Engineering Risk Analysis.

You have optional electives as well, such as Risk Assessment, Enterprise and Complex Systems for Engineers, and Scheduling and Sequencing, among others. You are also able to enroll in a few MBA courses. On top of these requirements, you will conduct in-depth research related to your desired career field.

Is Engineering Management a Good Degree?

Because of the unique nature of engineering, an MBA may not provide you with the skills you need in order to move up to higher-level management positions. Additionally, MBA programs don’t build upon your background in engineering in any way.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 72 credits must be completed. Students with an applicable master’s degree may have up to 30 credits apply, such that they take 42 credits at CSU for the Ph.D.
  • The Ph.D. requires students to complete a qualifying process (B grade or higher earned in all coursework toward the degree), an oral preliminary examination, and an oral final examination in addition to the finished dissertation document. All Ph.D. students are considered provisional until they complete the qualifying process and preliminary exam.
  • Course substitutions, if permitted, must be approved by your department and faculty advisor.

Advising and Faculty Mentor Expectations

All Ph.D. applicants are expected to create a formal advising arrangement with a faculty advisor before joining the Ph.D. program to assist with advising, course selection, and research. Doctoral students must complete an annual evaluation with their research advisor every year to continue degree progress. To explore options for a faculty advisor, visit the faculty list .

The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of 18 credits of SE coursework, selected to be relevant to your research project, and a minimum of 24 credits of SYSE 799A dissertation, taken over the duration of your program. Faculty advisor permission is required before your first semester of SYSE 799A registration.

  • Resume Outline your professional employment, collegiate work, and any publications, exhibitions, service activities, prizes, and awards.
  • Statement of purpose (2 pages MAXIMUM) This is meant to address the Systems Engineering Admissions Committee and why you would be a good fit for the program. This is different from the Research Interest Summary you will compile, but some of the same information may be used. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
  • Your relevant professional/academic background and skills
  • Why you are interested in Systems Engineering — provide specific areas of interest and application
  • Why you are interested in CSU's program and what you can contribute to CSU

The program is offered in a synchronous, online format with classes held on Saturdays. This format enables professionals who are employed full-time to pursue advanced study in a focused environment alongside like-minded fellow students. The program culminates in a praxis for use by practicing engineers to address a common concern or challenge.

Deadlines: Admission is offered on a rolling basis for four cohort starts per year.
Standardized test scores: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the PTE Academic is required of all applicants except those who hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a college or university in the United States or from an institution located in a country in which English is the official language, provided English was the language of instruction. Minimum scores:
Academic IELTS: an overall band score of 6.0 with no individual score below 5.0; applicants requesting funding consideration must have an overall band score of 7.0 with no individual score below 6.0; or
TOEFL: 550 on paper-based or 80 on Internet-based; applicants requesting funding consideration must have 600 on paper-based; or 100 on Internet-based; or
PTE Academic: 53; applicants requesting funding consideration must have 68.
Recommendations required: Three (3) recommendations required. If possible, one recommendation should be from your advisor at the institution from which you earned your highest degree.
Prior academic records: Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be uploaded to your online application. Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission.
If academic records are in a language other than English, a copy in the original language and an English language translation must be uploaded. Transcript evaluations should not be uploaded. Applicants who have earned a degree from an Indian university are required to submit individual semester marksheets.
Statement of purpose: Please write a comprehensive essay of approximately 250 words, indicating your primary and supporting fields of study, your specialized interests, and the general subject area of your planned dissertation or professional project.

  • The Online Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering is a 64-credit hour degree. Before beginning the program, students must have completed a Master of Science (MS) degree with a thesis. During the program, students must also complete a departmental qualifying exam, preliminary exam, proposal, and dissertation. The Qualifying Exam (QE) is required for all PhD students within the first year of study, and students may be required to take the exam on campus. The exam results let us know their suitability for conducting research and continuing their education in our program.

Requirements.

  • The minimum course requirement for the Ph.D. degree is eight courses (24 credit hours) with at least four courses in petroleum engineering (PETE). 
  • Your graduate committee is in total charge of the courses on your degree plan. In general, you should take 1/3 course work and 2/3 research/seminar courses.
  • Include a minimum of two, but not more than four, courses from outside the petroleum department. 
  • Two credits for PETE 684 and PETE 692 courses are used for internships. 
  • Undergraduate courses are taken only with the pre-approval of your graduate advisor. 
  • Agree on at least four committee members, with a minimum of one from outside the petroleum department and a minimum of two petroleum faculty, including your chair. 
  • File a degree plan before the beginning of your third semester and no later than 90 days before your final oral examination. 
  • Take your Ph.D. qualifying examination within one year of entering the program. 
  • Submit the results of your preliminary examination to the Graduate and Professional School at least 14 weeks before your final examination date. 
  • Your preliminary exam should be both oral and written, unless your committee member chooses to waive the written part of the examination. 
  • You must have an average GPR of 3.0 for all courses on your degree plan before you take the final exam. 
  • Complete your dissertation and final exam. 
  • Complete all your degree requirements within 10 years

The University of Tennessee—Knoxville offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial and Systems Engineering. It is intended for students with at least 2 years of experience in the engineering field. Students can complete a master’s alongside their doctorate. The degree program requires the completion of 72 credits, which are broken down into 36 hours of coursework and 24 to 36 hours of research and dissertation work.

Master's in Systems Engineering Admission Criteria and Deadlines

Degree objectives .

Applicants for the Systems Engineering major can be admitted to one of two degree objectives:   

  • The   Master of Science in Engineering (MSE)   degree is available to applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in Engineering. 
  • The   Master of Science (MS)   degree is available to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree that is not in Engineering, but in a related area.

Applicants to the MS degree objective must complete the Math Prerequisite Checklist demonstrating proof of successful completion of the mathematics prerequisite courses.

Criteria for Admissions 

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area (Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or Technology) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or equivalent (A=4.0).  

Applicants must have successfully completed the following mathematics or statistics-related courses:  

  • Calculus I  
  • Calculus II  
  • Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability, or Statistics

Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in Engineering that is ABET accredited by the EAC are exempted from submitting proof of mathematics prerequisite completion. Accreditation information by institution and program can be found at the ABET website .  

Applicants whose undergraduate degree is not in Engineering must submit a completed math prerequisites checklist (click to download)  as part of a complete application.  Prerequisite math courses must be for credit and from an institution accredited by a nationally recognized higher education accrediting body or the international equivalent .

Doctoral degrees.

The University of Idaho awards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in recognition of high achievement in scholarly and research activity. The degree of Doctor of Education is granted for high scholarly attainment and in recognition of the completion of academic preparation for professional practice. See the "Ph.D. and Ed.D. Procedures" tab for more details. The Doctor of Athletic Training is offered through the College of Education and the Department of Movement Sciences (see the "DAT Procedures" tab for more details).

The major professor and program offering a particular doctoral program indicate the general philosophy of the degree program, the objectives of courses and seminars, the research specialties available, and requirements unique to the department. Admission to the doctoral program is granted only to those who have a recognized potential for completing the degree.

Requirements for Doctoral Degrees

Credit requirements.

For the Ph.D. and Ed.D., a minimum of 78 credits beyond the bachelor's degree is required.; At least 52 credits must be at the 500 level or above and at least 33 of the 78 credits must be in courses other than 600 (Doctoral Research and Dissertation). A maximum of 45 research credits in 600 (Doctoral Research and Dissertation) including 6 credits of 599 (Non-thesis Research) or 500 (Master's Research and Thesis) may be in the 45 research credits used toward the degree. For the D.A.T., a minimum of 66 credits is required and follows a prescribed set of courses set by the program.

Courses numbered below 300 may not be used to fulfill the requirements for a doctoral degree; courses numbered 300-399 may be used only in supporting areas and are not to be used to make up deficiencies. Individual programs may require additional course work. Applicants having a doctoral degree may obtain a second doctoral degree subject to the approval of the Graduate Council. The Graduate Council will establish the requirements for the second degree.

Credit Limitations for Transfer, Correspondence Study, and Non-degree

For the Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees, a student must complete at least 39 of the 78 required credits at the University of Idaho (U of I) while matriculated in the College of Graduate Studies. Credits can be transferred to U of I with the consent of the student's major professor, the committee (if required by the program), the program's administrator, and the dean of the College of Graduate Studies. Credits can be transferred only if the institution from which the credits are being transferred has a graduate program in the course's discipline. All credits used toward graduate degrees must be from regionally accredited American institutions or from non-US institutions recognized by the appropriate authorities in their respective countries. Transfer credits are subject to all other College of Graduate Studies rules and regulations. Correspondence study courses may be applied to the degree only with the prior written approval of the College of Graduate Studies. Courses used toward an undergraduate degree, professional development courses, and courses on a professional development transcript are not available to be used toward a doctoral degree.

Time Limits

Of the credits submitted to satisfy the requirements for a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree, a maximum of 30 may be more than eight years old when the degree is conferred, provided the student's committee and program administrator determine that the student has kept current in the subjects concerned. Graduation must occur no later than five years after the date on which the candidate passed their preliminary or general examination. These time limitations can be extended only on recommendation of the committee and approval by the Graduate Council.

Awarding Doctoral Degrees to Members of the Faculty

Regulations are outlined in Section 4920 of the Faculty-Staff Handbook.

Particular Requirements for the Ed.D. Degree

A period of professional practice is required for the Doctor of Education degree; the period involved is determined by the student's supervisory committee. While the Ed.D. is a College of Education degree, you should consult with the departments in the College of Education to learn of specific emphasis requirements.

Procedures for Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Education Degrees

Appointment of major professor and committee.

Refer to " Appointment of Major Professor and Committee for All Degree Seeking Graduate Students " in the preceding General Graduate Regulations section. In addition, a doctoral supervisory committee consists of at least four people: the major professor as chair and at least one additional UI faculty member from the program, the balance of the committee may be made up of faculty members from a minor or supporting area, and faculty members from a discipline outside the major. If the committee has a co-chair, the minimum number of committee members is five.

Qualifying Examination

The qualifying examination is a program option and serves to assess the background of the student in both the major and supporting fields and to provide partially the basis for preparation of the student's study program. A particular program may or may not require a master's degree as a prerequisite for the qualifying evaluation. As soon as the program's qualifications are met, a supervisory committee is appointed.

Preparation of Study Plan

Refer to " Preparation and Submission of Study Plan " in the preceding General Graduate Regulations section.

Preliminary Examination for Ph.D. Degree

The preliminary examination should be scheduled only after the student has completed the majority of the courses on their study plan. The student is required to be registered during the semester the preliminary examination is taken. The student's committee certifies to the College of Graduate Studies the results of the preliminary examination and if passed, the student is advanced to candidacy. Graduation must occur no later than five years after the date on which the candidate passed their examination. If the preliminary examination is failed, it may be repeated only once; the repeat examination must be taken within a period of not less than three months or more than one year following the first attempt. If a student fails the preliminary examination a second time, or the program does not allow the student to repeat the examination after the first failure or the student does not retake the examination within one year, the student is automatically moved to unclassified enrollment status and is no longer in the degree program.

General Examination for Ed.D . Degree

When the student approaches the end of their course work, has completed the professional experience requirement, and has outlined the dissertation subject in detail, the supervisory committee approves the holding of the general examination. The student is required to be registered during the semester the general examination is taken. The examination is both written and oral and is intended to assess progress toward degree objectives. The student's committee certifies to the College of Graduate Studies the results of the general examination and if passed, the student is advanced to candidacy. Graduation must occur no later than five years after the date on which the candidate passed their examination. If the general examination is failed, it may be repeated only once; the repeat examination must be taken within a period of not less than three months or more than one year following the first attempt. If a student fails the general examination a second time, or the program does not allow the student to repeat the examination after the first failure or the student does not retake the examination within one year, the student is automatically moved to unclassified status and is no longer in the degree program.

Procedures for Doctor of Athletic Training

The culminating clinical project.

Students enrolled in the Doctor of Athletic Training (D.A.T.) will engage in research projects during the curricular phase of the program. These project(s) will lead to at least two publication ready manuscripts, and all students must meet professional authorship requirements (regardless of order). See the  Department of Movement Sciences and Doctor of Athletic Training webpages for more information.

The Team (Committee)

All D.A.T. project team committees will have at least four committee members: two members of the athletic training faculty (all with graduate faculty status), the student's attending clinician (who is the student's on-site mentor during the student's residency), and an expert in the student's chosen area of clinical research. The athletic training faculty members will always chair the CCP, provide research guidance, and serve as the experts in the development of advanced practice in Athletic Training. A situation may arise in which one or both of the members of the committee that are outside of the AT program faculty may have a degree less than that of which the student is seeking; however, the intent of the third and fourth D.A.T. committee membership is to provide outside validation of the student's progress toward advanced practice and clinical utility of action research studies.

Culminating Clinical Project Hours

These dissertation hours may be used in instances when the CCP has not been successfully completed and the curricular phase of program has been completed.

Admission Criteria

All applicants must have a completed bachelor’s degree with a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. An undergraduate degree in engineering and at least one year of professional work or internship experience is recommended, though not required. Applicants with non-engineering undergraduate degrees may apply.

  • Application Applicants for admission to the MEM program must complete an  Ohio State Graduate Admissions online application .
  • Resume Include an updated copy of your resume listing work experience. Applicants should have at least one year of professional work experience. The resume can be uploaded in the online application system.
  • Academic credentials and transcripts Copies of transcripts from all educational institutions you have attended must be submitted for degree verification and undergraduate GPA calculation. Unofficial copies can be uploaded in the online application system to form a complete application packet, but official copies of all transcripts (raised seal or notarized) must still be submitted to the Ohio State Graduate Admission’s Office.  Note: You do not have to submit transcripts for coursework or degrees received from The Ohio State University.
  •   Letters of recommendation Arrange to have three recommendations prepared. One should be from your immediate supervisor, and the other two from previous employers or people in managerial positions who supervised your work. One may be from a person familiar with your qualifications and potential for graduate study. You will have the option of allowing your recommendations to be submitted electronically or in paper form. Instructions are provided for either method within the online application.
  • Statement of Intent Include a short essay about why you wish to enroll in the MEM degree.
  • Nonrefundable application processing fee A non-refundable application fee of $60 is required. Ohio State alumni may be eligible for an admissions fee waiver.
  • A GRE score is not required for applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or above (from the last undergraduate or advanced degree earned) provided they qualify by meeting the MEM program admission requirements and have earned a degree from an ABET accredited institution.
  • During the admissions process, a recommendation to enroll in the Graduate Bridge Program (to qualify for admission to the MEM degree) will be considered for the following student populations: international applicants, applicants with a degree from a non-ABET accredited institution, or applicants who have a GPA below 3.0 from the last undergraduate or advanced degree earned.

The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) degree is focused on developing exceptional engineering managers who are ready to lead in any organization. With core classes provided by The Ohio State University College of Engineering, John Glenn College of Public Affairs, and The Fisher College of Business, you will gain a wholistic approach to management covering business leadership, engineering and project management, finance and accounting for engineers, technology strategy and innovation management, visual data analysis and design of engineering experiments. This program also culminates in a capstone course focused on Operation Excellence that combines all the foundational principles learned in the program and applies them to solve real-world challenges. Every course is taught by the same faculty that teaches on-campus, so you are receiving the same high-quality education no matter where you are located. You also have the opportunity to earn your Lean Six Sigma Certification in addition to the Master of Engineering Management degree if you choose to complete ISE 5810 Lean Sigma Foundations as an elective course. Yellow, Green, or even Black Belt can be earned depending upon your previous Six Sigma projects completed. You can complete the Master of Engineering Management at your own pace, either full-time or part-time. While most students take one or two courses per semester and complete the degree in about two to three years, you have the flexibility to take courses at a rate that best fits your schedule.

ENGR 6240 – Operational Excellence for Engineers

Students apply the integration of operational excellence principles, lean leadership strategies, and process improvement methodologies into the analysis and decision-making process. Students use Lean Six Sigma tools and statistical analysis to identify bottlenecks, reduce waste, and optimize business processes relevant to engineering management.

ENGR 6210 – Leadership and Team Effectiveness

Leadership and Team Effectiveness is fundamentally the product of the appropriate application of leadership and management at the group or team level. As such, it is about the student’s ability to get things accomplished successfully with others regardless of their position or authority or geographic locations of team members.

ENGR 6220 – Financial and Managerial Accounting for Engineers

Provides an overview of the basic topics in financial and managerial accounting. The primary focus will be on helping engineering students understand the meaning of the numbers in financial statements, their relationship to one another, and learning how they are used in planning, decision-making, and control toward achieving the objectives of an organization.

ISE 6801 – Project Management

This course is intended to provide foundational and advanced project management education in an interactive online learning environment as part of the Master Engineering Management program. This Project Management course focuses on relevant and best practice project management topics and case studies that will prepare the students to plan, organize, engineer for success, lead/manage, and participate in the multi-faceted and complex conditions that arise during planning and execution of small to large engineering projects and programs.

Avraham (Avi) Benatar is a Professor of Welding Engineering within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Director of the Plastics and Composites Joining Laboratory. He is also the Coordinator of the Welding Engineering Distance Education Master of Science program and Faculty Director of the College of Engineering Master of Global Engineering Leadership. Dr. Benatar teaches in the areas of joining of plastics and composites and welding design. To apply for the System Design and Management Master of Science degree in engineering and management, please register as an applicant and complete the online application. For information on applying for the Graduate Certificate in Systems and Product Design, visit this page .

The application for the 2024-2025 admissions cycle will open in September of 2024.

Before You Apply

Each year, SDM enrolls 50 to 55 high-potential, mid-career professionals who represent diverse academic and professional backgrounds. These individuals share two common goals: they want to be systems thinkers and they want to lead.

Successful SDM candidates also demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership potential
  • Systems thinking capability
  • A propensity to excel in complex engineering and management situations

Candidate Qualifications

To qualify for the SDM master’s program, candidates must either:

  • Hold a B.S. degree in engineering, science, or technology, and have five or more years of professional technical experience with increasing responsibility; or
  • Hold an M.S. degree in engineering, science, or technology, and have three or more years of professional experience in a technical field, including some leadership experience.

You may apply while working towards the minimum amount of experience required. For example, an applicant who has a B.S. and four and a half years of work experience may apply, as long as they have completed five years of experience by the time they begin the program.

In addition, candidates should have experience contributing to a product or system development initiative and working with or leading groups.

Application Requirements

Transcripts.

Electronic copies of official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions from which you have received a degree(s) or performed graduate work must be uploaded using our online application form. Uploads may be in the form of a single- or multi-page PDF, or individual JPEG or TIFF image files. 

Transcripts must be in English. Transcripts from international (non-US) institutions must be in English and certified.

Application Fee

The fee for applying to SDM is $90, payable by credit card online when you apply. You will be prompted for payment information after submitting your application.

Waivers for admissions fees are handled by the Office of Graduate Education. Please visit the OGE website to access the fee waiver form and find more information on the waiver process.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation (with the option of one additional letter submission) must be supplied with your application. During the online application process, you will be asked to provide contact information for your recommenders and may choose for them to submit their recommendations electronically.

Recommendations should be completed by individuals who can comment with some certainty about your intellectual and professional achievements and leadership potential. If possible, one recommendation should be completed by an academic source if you have attended a university within the last five years. We do not accept recommendations from family members.

Standardized Tests

Standardized test scores such as the GMAT or GRE are recommended but not required for application to the program. Applications submitted without test scores will be reviewed holistically and without negative inferences. SDM does not have minimum required GMAT or GRE scores for admission. We do have minimum acceptable scores for English proficiency exams; please see the section further down the page for more information.

Additionally, applicants are welcome to submit other pieces of evidence, such as expired test scores (GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS), which may assist the Admissions Committee in its evaluation process.

We will accept self-reported test scores by the application deadline, and welcome either traditional or online version of exams.

  • GRE: 3537-MASSACHUSETTS INST TECH SYS DE – Grad

If you are taking the GMAT/GRE after submitting your application, please provide the test date. We accept both the GMAT and GRE test results and have no preference for one over the other. 

*Note: SDM’s test codes are different from MIT’s. Please be sure to submit the correct codes to ensure we receive your scores.

All finalists for admission to the System Design & Management (SDM) program are required to attend an on-campus or video/virtual interview prior to receiving a final decision. These applicants will be contacted directly by the SDM Admissions Office.

Additional Requirements

The online application will additionally require you to submit a resume, a statement of objectives, and a leadership essay. You should have these ready at the time of completing the application.

The statement of objectives is a brief essay that asks why you are applying to graduate school and why you are applying to the SDM program. The leadership essay asks you to provide an example of your leadership experience.

Information for International Applicants

Non-native English speakers applying to the master’s program are required to demonstrate proficiency in English if they have not obtained a post-secondary degree at an English language institution. SDM requires the submission of scores on the Cambridge English, IELTS or TOEFL exam.

Cambridge English Qualifications

The Cambridge English Qualifications are English language proficiency exams. We accept the C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency assessments, which measure a student’s English language abilities for graduate studies and competitive professional environments. We expect a CEFR score of 185 or better, and it must be less than 5 years old.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic exam measures the ability to communicate in English across all four language skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.  We expect an IELTS score of 7.5 or better, and it must be less than 2 years old. No code is required; select “MIT Graduate Admissions” as the reporting option.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The TOEFL exam measures the ability of non-native English speakers to use and understand the English language. 

We expect a TOEFL score of 90 or better, and it must be less than 2 years old. The program code for SDM is  3514 MIT/SDM .

Reapplying to SDM

Those reapplying to the program need to submit the following:

  • New SDM online application
  • $90 application fee
  • Updated statement of objectives
  • Updated resume
  • One new letter of recommendation

All other information will be carried over from your previous application, including GRE or GMAT scores if they are still valid. You may also submit new scores if you have retaken the test since submitting your last application.

RIT offers new master’s degrees in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management

RIT has added three new master’s degrees to its portfolio: chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management. Students pursuing graduate degrees are able to combine advanced coursework with hands-on opportunities in laboratories alongside faculty-researchers.

RIT is offering three new master’s degrees designed to meet industry needs.

Chemical engineering and biomedical engineering programs in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering will include new master’s degrees as part of the engineering portfolio this year to meet demands in increasing renewable energies, personalized healthcare technologies, and diagnostic system improvements.

National trends indicate a growing need for graduates with the combined skills in engineering and in the chemical and biological sciences, engineering processes, and ‘smart’ technologies.

The graduate programs will have a mix of students from the established undergraduate programs, as well as new-to-RIT students from regional, national, and international chemical engineering programs seeking advanced degrees. With the flexibility of the degree program, the department also is seeing interest and enrollments from students from other science disciplines such as physics , said Patricia Taboada-Serrano , Graduate Programs Director.

“This will be achieved through a bridge program designed to provide the appropriate engineering background required for successful completion of an advanced degree in chemical engineering,” she said.

A dozen students have been accepted for the new program and will begin chemical engineering courses this fall. There are also eight BS/MS students enrolled in the program who are completing undergraduate work.

There will be several emphasis areas: chemical and mechanical engineering applications; microelectronic focus on semiconductors, photovoltaics, microfabrication; microsystems and quantum level systems; materials science; and advanced mathematics and simulation.

“The strength of our program is the design of its curriculum, as we are able to provide depth in content and advanced skills in one year of studies in the case of full-time students,” said Taboada-Serrano, associate professor of chemical engineering. “The timeline of the completion of the graduate degree enables our MS graduates to rejoin the workforce quickly if they delayed or interrupted careers to obtain a graduate degree. The compactness of our curriculum also enables working professionals to pursue our MS degree and complete it in two to three years.”

Similar to chemical engineering, the biomedical engineering program has grown substantially since it began 10 years ago. Today, 15 students in biomedical engineering (BME) are being integrated into graduate study through the BS/MS options. There are five new students in the stand alone master's program . It is a one-year, course-based program that features a Capstone design sequence.

Biomedical engineers combine knowledge of engineering with biology, anatomy, and physiology to create devices and systems to address the need for sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and solutions.

In addition to the advanced engineering degrees, 10 RIT students this semester are the first to enroll in classes for a project management master’s degree .

The 30-credit degree is approved for both in-person and online delivery.

Project management is a process for managing the successful execution of new initiatives within an organization for the sake of expanding the breadth of capabilities, services, and products offered.

“You can use this discipline in almost any field,” said Peter Boyd , senior lecturer and graduate programs director for RIT’s School of Individualized Study , which is overseeing the program. “It’s akin to software engineering in that you could work in numerous industries, from IT to construction to aviation or health care.”

“Project management is a growing discipline. There’s a growing demand in a wide range of industries,” Boyd said.

A  RITx MicroMasters in Project Management, offered by SOIS on the edX.org platform, is an additional pathway into the program that allows students to earn RIT course credit at a reduced cost, that can be applied toward the requirements for the MS in project management. 

RIT’s master’s degree in project management differs from others across the country because he said RIT developed a curriculum “that is responsive to a wide range of student academic and professional needs, employs non-traditional teaching models that place a greater emphasis on project-based learning, and similar active learning experiences.” RIT’s degree also promotes strong student/faculty mentor-mentee relationships and brings project management to industries that would benefit from it but have otherwise not traditionally embraced the discipline.

The degree program allows students to customize their courses for their degrees, providing a natural path of interdisciplinary study. This allows students the ability to better specialize to their specific interests, giving them a competitive edge in their field of interest and making them more valuable to an employer.

Of the 10 courses required to earn the MS degree, four are elective, so students may use advanced certificates or other courses already offered at RIT. The remaining six classes focus on the core topics of the project management discipline and align with the standards set by the Project Management Institute, the governing body for the field.  

One of those students is Dana Harp, who is taking the classes online from her home in Lewes, Del. She does clinical research remotely for Pfizer.

She received her edX project management MicroMasters in 2020 and transferred those credits toward a project management advanced certificate with RIT in 2021. She took a couple of years off from education and was pleasantly surprised when she learned RIT now offers a master’s in project management.

“I was always interested in getting my master’s degree,” Harp said. “My company has a great program to reimburse for education, so I have the opportunity to continue learning without having to pay for it all myself. And it will definitely open up more opportunities for promotion by having that degree. It will give me a leg up for the trajectory I want to be on. This is going to help me moving forward.”

Harp hopes to receive her master’s degree in the spring or next fall, and she’s excited to be one of the first students receiving the RIT degree.

“I’m lucky all of my earlier classes transferred over, and it’s really cool to see that some of the professors I’ve had in previous classes are teaching in this program as well,” she said. “I think it’s going to be really fun.”
