  • Why I Love the English Language

English, despite not being the most-spoken language in the world by some margin, has become an almost universally accepted lingua franca, and the language of choice for students to learn if they want to get ahead in life.

Yet most of the reasons for this don’t have very much to do with what a wonderful language it is. It’s the language of business and finance, mostly thanks to the economic dominance of Britain in the 19th century and the USA in the 20th. It’s the predominant language of film and music, but with lyrics like, ‘All I wanted was to break your walls/ All you ever did was wreck me’ appearing in number 1 slots worldwide, it’s hard to claim that the linguistic beauty of the English language is responsible. The endurance of the myth that English only beat German by a single vote to become the official language of the USA sums up the general attitude to the English language; it has gained global popularity by chance, not by merit.

All the same, it is a wonderful language. Anyone who has ever studied Wilfred Owen, made their own dress or studied cinematography (bear with me here) will understand the loveliness of things that, when examined and dissected, don’t lose their charm but in fact gain something in the greater understanding, like opening up the back of a pocket watch to see the intricate mechanism inside. That’s what the English language is like; that’s one of the many reasons it’s so worth studying. What’s on the surface is pretty enough, but dive in and you’ll see that there’s so much more going on underneath.

Synonyms galore

Image is a button that reads, "Browse all EFL and English Culture articles."

Better still, it does so in a particularly elegant way, relating to the three (ish) main sources of words. Anglo-Saxon words are still, in the main, read as simple, easy to understand, or even crude. French words are somewhat more sophisticated. Those who’d like others to know about their level of education but can’t quite bring themselves to wear their degree classification on a t-shirt will favour words derived from Latin. Occasionally and delightfully, these three sources will each provide one word for the same thing, as occurs with ‘kingly’ (as said by the peasant), ‘royal’ (as said by the courtier) and ‘regal’ (as said by the scholar). Eight hundred years ago, each of these people would be speaking a different language; now, they use a different vocabulary that nonetheless maps on to almost exactly the same social distinctions. English history is encoded on the English language, and though it doesn’t say much for social mobility, there’s still something pleasing in how it plays out in the language today. The tendency of the English language to borrow aggressively from other languages didn’t stop with the Norman invasion. Renaissance scholars added the bulk of the Latin and Greek words in use today, and the expansion of British trade and the British Empire led to a hugely varied assortment of words joining the language in subsequent centuries, so that we now have splendid-sounding words like kiosk, kayak and kangaroo seasoning the broth as well.

One result of having so much vocabulary with so many origins is that English is utterly fantastic for puns. An American lecturer of mine once referred to Terry Pratchett “sharing the English delusion that puns are funny”; perhaps this ‘delusion’ exists simply because English is such a versatile and fun language in which to pun. Get four English speakers in a pub, make a comment about fish and see what happens – one of them will be “floundering”, another “cod do batter” and a third will be “feeling koi” and not join in. Suggest cheese and they won’t be able to “camembert it” and the whole cycle will start over again. From the cringe-worthy examples above to the elegant winner of the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe’s funniest joke – “why can’t hedgehogs just share?” – the sheer range of homophones and near-homophones in English makes wordplay a delight. There’s a certain irreverence to all of this; despite its primary modern use as the language of business , English is at heart a language to have fun with.

A truly democratic language?

The main reason it’s impossible to say that English has more words than any other language is that no one knows exactly how many words it actually has. We can count the number of words in various major dictionaries easily enough, but no dictionary is definitive. Where other languages have regulators, like the Académie française or the Rat für deutsche Rechtschreibung , English has no such thing. No central body. No one to fix dubious spelling patterns, arbitrate on the acceptability of the singular “they” or defend the subjunctive – but no one, either, to bar new and useful loanwords from entering the language, or to prevent English from evolving organically, according to the needs of English speakers. There is no body of Dumbledoresque old men to control where the language goes and how it should be spoken – and if anyone tried to institute one, it seems likely that the vast majority of the world’s 1.5 billion English speakers would ignore its pronouncements anyway.

The consequence of this is that English is more-or-less democratic. Change to the language happens by consensus, not by decree. And yes, it does mean that we’re stuck with ridiculousness like “i before e except after c” (and also just about every other letter in the alphabet), but it also means that as an English speaker, I have just about as much influence over the direction of the language as you do, or as the Merton Professors of English in Oxford do, or even, potentially, as someone who is only just learning their first few words of English does. The only effective way to influence the language is to be good at using it – and that’s why Shakespeare gets the credit for inventing 1,700 English words. If not truly democratic, English is certainly more meritocratic than many other languages in the world. This is all the more worthy of note because any time anyone has succeeded in forcing ‘improvements’ on the English language in an authoritarian, imposed sort of way, it’s almost always made things worse. Think about the utterly unnecessary introduction of the letter ‘b’ into words like ‘debt’ and ‘doubt’, not added to give English teachers extra words to add on spelling tests (though it may seem that way) but in order to give the English words a closer resemblance to their Latin roots. The desire to make English resemble Latin – a language with which it does not have all that much in common grammatically – also gives us the commandment not to split infinitives, which, if obeyed, would have ruined the opening of Star Trek . Like Einstein’s comment on genius – “if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” – English has often suffered for not being Latin.

Another dismal failure of English language intervention is Noah Webster’s spelling reforms. Some have been readily accepted (we no longer listen to musick ), some never caught on (we don’t suffer a headake ) but the most confusing are the middle ground of changes, accepted on one side of the Atlantic but not the other. So we’re stuck with traveler and traveller, color and colour , center and centre , a source of annoyance for editors everywhere. This resistance of English to central control is not just one of the reasons it’s such a widely-spoken language today; it’s also central to its development. Received wisdom holds that the clearly Germanic language of Old English evolved into the hybrid Middle English as a result of the Norman invasion and the resulting influence of Norman French. That is certainly true, but it’s also only half of the story. The three-part division in the language that I spoke about earlier – the peasantry speaking English, the nobility speaking French and the intelligentsia speaking Latin – came about at this time, superceding Anglo-Saxon efforts to make the use of English universal among the different social classes.

That meant that what had previously been a language spoken, written and taught by the most educated in society as well as the least educated was then handed over almost entirely to the peasantry. English didn’t re-emerge as a language that could acceptably be used by people of status at least until the Alliterative Revival of the 14th century, and arguably until Chaucer (for which he earns the title of ‘The Father of English Literature’). For around 300 years it was free from interference by the sorts of people who would seek to preserve its more archaic and clunky structures, and therefore evolved naturally. I adore Old English, but it’s a language that’s full of redundancies and unnecessary grammatical complication, such as a strict case system and relatively strict rules on word order – one or the other will do; you don’t need both. Those 300 years of French influence and intellectual neglect stripped English of most of its case system and most of its grammatical gender, as well as simplifying verb endings and making many strong verbs weak, a process that continues to this day. Like antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a challenge to the English language that could have resulted in its annihilation instead just made it stronger. It’s arguable that something similar is happening to English today. The majority of conversations in English happen without a native speaker present; the rise of ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) means that use of English internationally is increasingly about finding the most expedient method of communication rather than any concern about linguistic showiness. English is still shedding redundancies: the subjunctive really only survives in fossilised forms like ‘God save the Queen’, the possessive apostrophe is looking sickly and some experts are predicting that the third person singular ‘-s’ verb ending (e.g. she run s ) could be on the way out too. This is where the lack of a centralised authority is vital to survival. Current English speakers may cringe at the thought of saying “he study hard” or similar, but English speakers 400 years ago would probably have mourned the loss of ‘thee’ and ‘thou’, an egalitarian change to the language that most English speakers nowadays appreciate. Trying to hold back the organic evolution of language is reminiscent of a primordial fish clinging to the nascent stub of a tetrapod’s foot and saying, “you know, it’s a bad idea to go up on land…” What’s great about English is that for most of its history, such attempts have failed.

The most beautiful language in the world

There’s a joke that goes like this: there’s an English speaker, a French speaker, a Spanish speaker and a German speaker, and they’re having a conversation about language. “English is beautiful,” the English speaker sighs. “Listen to this: butterfly !” The French speaker nods and says, “yes, French is beautiful too: papillon !” The Spanish speaker smiles and says, “and Spanish as well: mariposa !” The German speaker huffs and frowns, and eventually says, “look, what is your problem with Schmetterling ?” I mention this joke not because it’s particularly funny (unless you’re telling it in a large group with several Germans, in which case it’s hilarious), but because it’s one of the few instances I can think of where English is grouped with the ‘beautiful’ languages instead of the ‘ugly’ ones. It’s an accepted truth that French is better for romance and Italian is better for music. It isn’t just a Germanic/Romance distinction, though: Icelandic is very pretty. English seldom gets this kind of praise, and the accents that make it sound more euphonious often do so because they’re picking up the rhythms and inflection of a different language and applying it to English, as with Irish pronunciations of words like ‘thirty’ and ‘film’.

I think that’s OK. Many languages that sound beautiful do so because of their consistency – Icelandic, for instance, hasn’t changed all that much in a thousand years, whereas one of the key elements that makes English so wonderful is, as I’ve discussed, its sheer mongrel variety. English doesn’t have the beauty of a Chippendale wardrobe; it’s more the linguistic equivalent of an Ikea Billy bookcase. It’s not superficially attractive, but it’s also accessible to pretty much anyone, and there are no restrictions on what you do with it once you’ve got it. Versatile, rich and democratic, the nature of English allows any speaker to express themselves more or less any way they want – and if that isn’t beautiful, I don’t know what is.

Being the most widely-spoken language in the world, English has also become the international language of business.

Knowing English and being able to communicate professionally will undoubtedly give you access to new career opportunities and make you stand out among other applicants. A survey by  Cambridge English found that over 95% of employers in many non-native English-speaking countries consider English an important skill.

As companies do more business internationally, the ability to communicate in English will only become more important to those who want to progress at work; the same survey found that in 18% of companies, employees move to higher job grades faster if they have good English skills.

This is backed up by a 2019 study which found that advanced-level English commands a wage premium of 12% on average. Intermediate-level English brings about half this amount. Interestingly, the premiums for advanced-level French and Spanish were almost double and triple, respectively.

So, whether you wish to work for a multinational company in another country, or you just want to build a solid career, learning English will help you achieve your goals. The good news is that there are some excellent online business English courses available these days, many of them free to access.

English is the language not only of international business, but also of travel and tourism. If you wish to travel to other countries where you don’t speak the native language, chances are that understanding English will help you navigate public transport systems, converse with locals, and learn more about the culture.

Even if English is not the official language in the country you are traveling to, it is still by far the most common second language spoken globally. In fact, over 1 billion people around the world have chosen to learn English as a second language, so one of the benefits of speaking and understanding English is that you will share a language with around 20% of the world’s population!

You can explore more ESL statistics here – and find out which country has the best non-native English speakers.

If you want to move to live or study in a country where English is the main language spoken, it’s even more important that you can communicate well with native English speakers and interact with the world around you. Fortunately, once you move there, learning the language will become easier as you have the benefit of English immersion .

3. English is important for accessing information

Around 95% of all articles published in scientific journals are written in English, even if it is not the author’s first language.

If you want to be able to access global knowledge and do your own research on any topics of interest, this information is much easier to access if you have a certain level of proficiency in English.

English is also the dominant language of the internet, with almost 59% of websites published in English. This is over ten times more than the next-highest share, which goes to Russian with 5.3%.

4. Academic advantages of learning English

Given that the main language of instruction in many renowned universities and academic programs is English, you may find that you need to achieve a certain level of English proficiency before you can proceed with your studies.

This is especially true if you wish to pursue higher degrees, participate in research collaborations, and engage in academic discourse within your field of interest.

You may also decide to study in a country where English is spoken as the primary language, and you will certainly need a good command of the language in order to succeed with this.

In this way, studying English can open doors to other fields of study, too.

5. Learning another language boosts cognitive ability

One of the many benefits to learning a new language is that it encourages your brain to work in different ways.

This study looked at adults learning a second language and noted that after an initial learning period, and with sustained practice of at least five hours per week, the subjects benefitted from longer attention spans and a better ability to maintain attention when switching between tasks.

There is growing evidence that people who can speak more than one language are more creative and empathetic toward others. It’s also believed that language learning can counteract some of the negative cognitive decline brought on by aging. Specifically, it can improve memory recall and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease .

6. Cultural benefits of learning English

Learning to speak English can also help make you more culturally aware and broaden your horizons in life.

Firstly, as you study the language you are also learning about the culture of English-speaking countries: national holidays, family traditions, history, food, music, and more.

Secondly, learning English will give you chances to meet people from other countries who are also learning the language. As you practice speaking together, you will discover fascinating things about how they do life differently to you.

Finally, as we mentioned earlier, English language skills can help when it comes to traveling and exploring new cultures first-hand.

7. Enjoy more entertainment

Another benefit of learning English is that you can more easily access and enjoy movies, books, TV shows, music, and podcasts. Again, English dominates international pop culture and being able to watch, read, or listen in the original language is much more enjoyable than reading subtitles or listening to a dubbed version.

Once you have a reasonable knowledge of English, you can also start using these forms of entertainment to continue learning, building your English fluency and comprehension .

For example, there are many ways you can use podcasts for learning English or learn new vocabulary from movies.

8. It’s a gift to your children

If you already have children or plan to start a family in the future, it’s an amazing gift to teach them English from birth or from a very young age.

Growing up bilingual, kids will experience the many benefits of knowing English without having to study it as a second language later in life. It’s a great way to give them a headstart in the globalized world they are living in.

Bilingual children also tend to have better attention spans, be better at multitasking, and be more emotionally perceptive than monolingual children, according to an article published by MindShift .

Speaking English at home can be a lot of fun, especially if you incorporate some  English-learning games into your family time.

9. Learning English can help you communicate better in your native language

As you learn a foreign language, you become more aware of how your primary language works.

If you want to learn English grammar , for example, you must first understand the grammar of your native language so you can recognize exactly what you are trying to say. It’s this kind of thing that you may never really consider if you only speak one language your whole life.

Second language fluency can also give you a better appreciation of the range and limitations of your native vocabulary. There are many words that exist in other languages that do not have an equivalent in English, and vice versa. This is why languages end up ‘borrowing’ words from one another so speakers can express themselves more eloquently.

10. You’ll form new relationships when you can speak English

English is the language of communication not just in business, but also when it comes to forming international friendships and relationships.

Whether you want to participate in global networking opportunities, write to a pen pal abroad, or even check out the international dating scene, you’ll find more opportunities opening up as you start learning the English language.

One great way to learn English and start meeting new people is with a language exchange program . You pair up with an English speaker who is interested in learning your native language, and you help each other by chatting in both languages.

11. English skills will give you greater confidence

Our final benefit of learning English (or anything else, for that matter) is that it will build your overall confidence in yourself.

As you use English more and realize your comprehension and communication are improving each day, you will gain confidence in your own ability to take on new challenges and meet the goals you set for yourself.

In this way, learning English will help motivate you to try other new things and continually develop yourself. If you’re lacking motivation right now, these quotes about learning English may help inspire you!

Start learning English easily

We hope that reading this list of benefits of learning the English language has inspired you to continue with your studies. Now you realize the many advantages that learning English brings, what are you waiting for?

There are many possible ways to learn English , from apps to online English courses to podcasts and more. This means it is easier than ever to access the resources you need to take your language skills to the next level. And even better – many English-learning resources are completely free !

Just make sure that you consider your goals for learning English and you keep these in mind as you study and practice. Argumentative Essay: Reasons You Should Learn English

If you plan on making your way in the world, learning a second language is imperative. English has a foothold as the “language of business,” and being so, has become the most commonly learnt second language amongst foreign language speakers. Not only is English significant in the business world, but in general, when people of differing native languages congregate, English is the language of everyday conversation. Again, this is because it’s most commonly taught in foreign schools, as English is the collective language spoken by 1.8 billion people worldwide, or 27% of the world’s population. By virtue of this, for those willing to make the effort, learning English proffers forth benefits that learning any other second language mightn’t. Highlighted below are some of these benefits, including employment opportunities; technical, economic and scientific innovation; and cultural understanding.

As the language of business, English will open up the world to you in nearly any field of employment. Because it’s so important to be bilingual, any company in any country of the world prefers a bilingual employee – and even more so, an English-speaking one – over an employee who speaks only his/her native tongue. In being bilingual in English, you will be able to communicate with others in all corners of the world (remember, over 27% of the world’s population speaks English), and you will be able to translate for those in your company who do not speak English. This makes you an exceedingly vital communication tool. Not only will you be an asset to your company, but you will reap many benefits as a result, such as a larger annual income, a better standard of living, and the opportunity to live just about anywhere in the world.

Along with being the language of business, English is the language of economic development, as well as technical and scientific innovation. The United States is the leader in technical innovation and economic development and, as a consequence, the language to know in making your way in these fields is English. English is also the language of science, so scientists must be fluent in order to communicate their findings with others. Being successful in any one of these prosperous fields requires fluency in English.

Lastly a great benefit to learning English is that it increases cultural understanding, not only of native English-speaking cultures, but of any other country whose second language is English. The film and music industries are largely English-driven. The art, traditions and culture of any country, especially those of native English-speaking countries, can be better understood if you have some knowledge of the English language. Being centuries-old and having been the native language of empirical powers and world leaders, English remains a great source of influence in human history, weaved into the narrative of many cultures, and sewn, like a cultural seed, throughout time.

If you endeavor to learn a second language, that language should be English. The benefits it proffers – including employment opportunities; technical, economic and scientific innovation; and cultural understanding – are exceeded by no other language in the world.

Why Learning English Is Important: 7 Benefits of Studying English

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

No one can deny it.

English is the dominant language of the world.

People with good English have serious advantages over those with poor English skills, and these advantages will only get bigger as time passes.

If your English is weak, better start improving your English now!

Here are the benefits of learning English.

Benefit #1: Earn More Money

If your English is good, you qualify for more job opportunities and higher pay.

If you visit any job search site, you’ll find that most jobs require a good command of English.

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

Everything else being equal, people with good English earn more than those with poor English.

Here’s a real-world example: my sister, who works at Bumrungrad International hospital (largest private hospital in Southeast Asia), receives a monthly bonus on top of her base salary simply because she got a high score on the TOEIC English test.

Even if you aren’t looking for a job, having a good command of English still benefits you financially.

For instance, if you’re a freelancer who can write English well, you can sell your services through international freelance sites like Fiverr or Upwork instead of the local ones. This way you reach a wider audience, get more work, and earn more!

My English-Language YouTube Channel

Here’s a personal example of how I benefit from my ability to speak English:

I have a small YouTube channel where I share tips for learning English. Due to my laziness, the channel has only 14 public videos — a miniscule number compared to other channels.

But because the channel is in the English language , it reaches people worldwide and has generated over 30 millions views and has earned considerable income for me.

If I had made the videos in my native language, my channel would be attracting a much smaller audience, earning less income (due to fewer views and lower ad rates), and making less impact.

Benefit #2: More Career Options

A good knowledge of English opens up new career possibilities.

With decent English skills, you might be able to become an English teacher, a private English tutor, a tour guide, or a translator. You can take up one of these jobs on the side, or you can make it your primary way of earning income.

Your English doesn’t even have to be perfect to qualify you for these jobs.

Sometimes, having slightly above average English skills is enough.

Even though your English is not that great, you can still teach English to children.

Even though you speak English with an accent, you can still be a tour guide.

Although your written English isn’t perfect, you can still translate English into your native language.

You just have to make sure that your English is above average.

I used to be a software engineer, but thanks to my English skills, today I make a living teaching English online. My English is not perfect, and people make fun of my accent on my YouTube channel all the time, but that doesn’t stop me.

Benefit #3: Access to More Knowledge & Information

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

Today you can find information about almost anything.

There are books, articles, videos, audio programs, online courses, and podcasts on every topic imaginable.

But here’s the caveat: most of the information is in the English language.

So if you’re unable to read or listen in English well, you have access to only a limited amount of information.

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

I’m speaking from experience here.

As a website owner, I sometimes have to search online for ways to fix issues on my site, which is built using the WordPress software. However, it’s difficult to find useful information about WordPress in my native language.

But if I search in English instead, the task becomes much easier because there’s plenty of information in English.

If you have good English reading and listening skills, you are at a big advantage; you have access to an enormous supply of knowledge.

Benefit #4: Communicate Globally

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

If your English is good, you can communicate with people all over the world.

This comes in handy in various situations.

Here’s a personal example: one time my PayPal account was suspended for some reason, so I couldn’t withdrew my money. I tried contacting them via email but got no response. But since I could speak English, I called customer support (located in Singapore) and explained the situation. The problem was resolved soon after.

I’m comfortable using English-language services like PayPal, Fiverr (freelance services site), Google Drive, Hostgator (web hosting). If there’s a problem, I know I can explain the problem in English and get it sorted out quickly.

Sadly, many people aren’t comfortable with these services because they can’t communicate in English so well.

Benefit #5: Travel

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

Do you enjoy visiting new counties?

Does your job involve traveling abroad?

If so, learning English will make your travel life easier.

English is the most commonly spoken language in the world.

It’s the most popular “second language.” Most people choose to learn English after their native language. In many countries, it’s a mandatory subject in school.

This means when you’re abroad, you’re more likely to find someone who knows English than someone who knows Mandarin Chinese or Spanish.

And as you can see from the map below, the English-speaking populations are more “spread out” across the globe, whereas the speaking populations of other languages are usually confined to a single country or continent.

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

This makes English the most useful language to learn.

If your spoken English is good, you can travel abroad without worrying too much about language barrier. You can confidently communicate with foreigners without resorting to sign language or translation apps.

Benefit #6: Enjoy Books, Movies, and TV Shows in English

The English-speaking cultures have produced many creative works in various forms such as books, movies, and TV shows.

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

If you have good comprehension in English, you can enjoy these creations in their original language—English.

Now you might be thinking, “Why bother with the originals when I can enjoy the translated versions?”

Unfortunately, there are two problems with translated works.

Problem #1: Availability

Sadly, many creative works are not available in a foreign language, especially the less popular ones.

But if you understand English well, this won’t be a problem. You can just go straight to the source materials.

It’s nice being able to enjoy things in their original forms. Lately I’ve been listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks. (It’s a different experience than reading the books.) I usually listen to them during my workouts.

These audiobooks aren’t available in my native language. If my English listening was poor, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy them.

Problem #2: Loss of meaning

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

No two languages are equal.

When something is translated into another language, it’s inevitable that some meaning will be lost, no matter how good the translator is.

Sometimes this is due to poor translation. Other times it’s because of certain differences between the two languages, or because of some unique characteristics of English.

For example, consider these wordplay jokes:

Q: How do you count cows? A: With a cow culator. Q: Why did the school kids eat their homework? A: Because their teacher told them it was a piece of cake . Q: What do you call a bee that can’t make up its mind? A: A may be . I have a few jokes about unemployed people, but none of them work .

It’s impossible to translate these jokes. You must read them in English to get the jokes!

Benefit #7: Mental Fitness

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

This may be the most overlooked benefit of learning English.

Just like how your body needs physical exercise to stay fit, your brain needs mental exercise to stay sharp and healthy.

And based on many research studies, learning English (or any other language) has many benefits to your mental capacity.

Here are a few examples:

  • People who speak two or more languages show symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease at a later time than speakers of a single language.
  • Babies growing up in bilingual homes are better at adapting to changes in their environments.
  • Bilinguals are better than monolinguals at switching between two tasks (thanks to the practice of switching back and forth between two languages).
  • Bilinguals are twice as likely to recover from a stroke than monolinguals. (A stroke is the death of brain cells caused by a lack of blood flow in the brain.)

The evidence is clear: being bilingual is beneficial throughout life, from infancy to adulthood to old age.

No matter how old you are, your brain will benefit greatly from the challenge and stimulation of learning English.

Conclusion: Why It’s so Important to Learn English

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

Today it’s common for people from different parts of the world to communicate with each other.

And more often than not, the language they use will be English.

Even though China is on the path to beating the US and becoming the world’s most powerful country, learning English is more advantageous than learning Mandarin Chinese, or any other language.

This is because English has become ingrained in many aspects of our lives. It’s too late for another language to replace it.

If you speak Mandarin Chinese, you’ll only be able to communicate with mostly Chinese people. But if you speak English, you can communicate with the Chinese, Koreans, Brazilians, etc.

So if you think your English needs improving, what are you waiting for? Start improving your English so you can enjoy many social, financial, and lifestyle advantages.

The truth is, I didn’t have much of a choice when it came to learning English. English was the language of instruction in the school I attended in my home country of India. I had to use English to understand my teachers and complete my schoolwork.

Even if you’re not required to learn English, you should have a good reason for doing so that you can come back to whenever you feel like giving up.

There are many great reasons to learn English :

  • Thousands of learner friendly videos (especially beginners)
  • Handpicked, organized, and annotated by FluentU's experts
  • Integrated into courses for beginners

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

  • English has over one billion speakers and is the language of international business and communication, so it’s an incredibly practical language to learn.
  • Knowing English opens up a whole world for you to explore, as it’s spoken in pretty much every country (especially in areas that are popular for tourism).
  • You’ll likely find many more job opportunities if you know English, as many companies and businesses require that their employees speak it.

Whatever your reason for learning English , remind yourself of it whenever you get frustrated or need some motivation to keep studying.

My school had some strict rules about speaking only in English during classes. This meant that although I knew three languages (Bengali, Hindi and English), I mostly spoke in English at school.

I took advantage of this by turning Bengali and Hindi vocabulary into an English learning tool. I picked up a lot of English vocabulary by looking for the English equivalents for words and phrases I used all the time in Bengali and Hindi.

Here’s how you can use this trick to expand your English vocabulary:

  • Find English equivalents for the most common words you use in your native language . This makes your English vocabulary more meaningful to your daily life, therefore easier to remember.
  • Practice translating back and forth between the languages to help you express yourself in any situation.
  • Try to identify similarities and differences between your native language and English. This could be in their grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure , etc.

I was lucky to have teachers who encouraged us to make mistakes. They helped us choose the right word for any particular context, allowed us to participate and ask questions freely and corrected us whenever we mispronounced a word.

Our many mistakes were a crucial part of our learning process . We weren’t shamed or punished for being wrong and we always got points for trying, because practice is the most important way to become fluent.

  • Interactive subtitles: click any word to see detailed examples and explanations
  • Slow down or loop the tricky parts
  • Show or hide subtitles
  • Review words with our powerful learning engine

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

Here’s how you can use making mistakes as an effective learning tool:

  • Be prepared to initially fail and make lots of mistakes. Understanding that mistakes will ultimately help you learn will prevent you from getting discouraged.
  • If possible, look for a personal language mentor or English tutor who can identify and correct your mistakes. Direct feedback on your learning progress is very important, and one-on-one interactions will help you learn faster.
  • If you’re part of a class or study group, make the most out of it by participating in class talks and interacting with everyone . Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Both your language and social skills will dramatically improve once you let go of inhibitions and immerse yourself in learning.

Often while reading a book, I’d come across words that I didn’t understand and would ask my father to explain them to me. He’d usually encourage me to consult an English dictionary.

He explained that a dictionary has more than just definitions—there are also pronunciation guides, word histories, synonyms (words with similar meanings), antonyms (words with opposite meanings), example sentences and other information. There’s so much one can learn just by reading a dictionary!

Investing in a good dictionary is one of the most beneficial things you can do to improve your English. Here are my suggestions:

  • Keep a good dictionary on your bookshelf and have a digital version on your phone for quick reference. Refer to it whenever you come across any unfamiliar term.
  • Use your dictionary to develop your vocabulary. Choose a random letter and learn a new word or simply open to a random page and choose a word that catches your fancy.
  • Come up with fun exercises to remember new words. Choose five random words and try writing a story or a poem using them. Your aim shouldn’t be to create something perfect, but rather to get words on paper and to write grammatically correct and logical sentences.

In school, we learned grammar and the fundamentals of language, but that wasn’t all. We watched movies, had quiz sessions, played games with our classmates and completed lots of fun exercises and activities while learning.

Taking a creative approach to language learning is essential. Constant grammar drills won’t work for most people. You need to break things up when studying a difficult topic like English so you don’t get bored and lose interest.

This is very easy to achieve thanks to all the fun English learning tools out there. Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Learn words in the context of sentences
  • Swipe left or right to see more examples from other videos
  • Go beyond just a superficial understanding

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

  • If you’re searching for a tutor or English course , try to find one that uses audio-visual material, games and other interactive activities . Learning a new language through games has been shown to have major benefits .
  • Play language games by yourself or with study partners. Make it a habit to solve English crossword puzzles  or have a Scrabble session with your family every week. There are also a number of word games that you can play.
  • Check out English YouTube channels in areas you’re passionate about. For instance, if you like cooking, follow a chef who speaks English so you can learn new words and recipes.

As a kid, I pretended to be fictional characters with my friends, played role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and engaged in collaborative storytelling. My love for stories later helped me to write my own.

Storytelling and language learning may initially seem a bit far off, but they’re actually not very different. To be a fluent speaker of a language, you need to be able to express yourself and communicate efficiently.

Here are some ways to connect storytelling with your language learning:

  • Try writing your own stories in English and act them out.
  • You can even create a persona (character) of the confident and charismatic speaker you’d like to be and practice in front of the mirror.
  • Form a study group offline or online, and meet up regularly to role-play your stories in English.
  • Take advantage of activities that require teamwork. You could try joining a local theater group to improve your body language and expressiveness skills.

I always loved learning and exploring things on my own, and while growing up I read as much as possible. My love for reading naturally improved my vocabulary and sentence construction .

With the dialogue in fiction, I got to know the finer nuances of English conversation. And by reading nonfiction, I learned lots of new and interesting facts and figures, as well as how to express them appropriately in English.

Of course, not everyone loves reading. But you can still find English materials that interest you to boost your comprehension skills in an enjoyable way like I did. Here’s how:

  • You don’t have to start with huge English novels. Try an English comic book  or funny English books !
  • Check out some English children’s books . They’re simple and repetitive—perfect for beginners.
  • If you want something short but more mature, try these easy English short stories .
  • Practice with free online reading comprehension exercises .

Remember, if you can develop a love for reading, it’ll benefit you for life!

  • FluentU builds you up, so you can build sentences on your own
  • Start with multiple-choice questions and advance through sentence building to producing your own output
  • Go from understanding to speaking in a natural progression.

I learned over the years that if you truly want to master something, you should immerse yourself in it. English immersion played a huge role in pushing me to fluency.

4 reasons why learning English is so important

A group of ELC's English students are standing together in front of the castle in Lewes. Lewes is a pretty country town just inland and not too far away from Brighton and Eastbourne. Well worth a visit.

English is the language of science, of aviation, computing, diplomacy, and tourism. It is the lingua franca of the business world, so knowledge of English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within your home country or for finding work abroad. It’s also the language of international communication, the media and the internet, so learning English is important for socialising and entertainment as well as work!

Why is learning English so important?

  • English is the language of international communication As of 2022 English is the official language of 67 different countries and the most spoken language in the world for both native and non-native speakers. More than 1,100 million people use English every day around the globe. Being able to speak English is not just about being able to communicate with native English speakers, it is the most common second language in the world. If you want to speak to someone from another country the chances are that you will both be speaking English in order to communicate.

The British Council projected that by 2020 two billion people in the world would be studying English. Learning English is important as it allows you to communicate easily with your fellow global citizens. When you study English at ELC schools you will be making friends with people from lots of different countries, using English as your common language!

  • English is the language of business English is the dominant business language and it has almost become a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter the global workforce. Research from all over the world shows that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in English and many international companies expect employees to be either fluent in English or at least be able to communicate effectively if English is their second language.

Global companies such as Airbus, Daimler-Chrysler, Fast Retailing, Nokia, Renault, Samsung, SAP, Technicolor, and Microsoft in Beijing have designated English as their official corporate language. Even companies such as Rakuten, a Japanese tech conglomerate similar to Amazon and eBay, have made it compulsory for their employees in Japan to be able to speak English.

The importance of learning English in the international marketplace cannot be understated – it is the common language used by companies and businesses the world over, and vitally important if you wish to succeed in your career. Learning English really can change your life!

  • Speaking English gives you access to a world of entertainment Many of the world’s biggest blockbuster films, bestselling books and chart-topping music are published and produced in English. By learning English you will have access to a wealth of entertainment and will be able to have a greater cultural understanding, allowing you to enjoy your movies, novels and favourite playlists even more.

If you speak English, you won’t need to rely on translations or subtitles anymore to enjoy your favourite books, songs, films and TV shows. And don’t forget that watching movies and television programmes in English is also a fun way to learn the language!

At ELC we encourage students to participate in our social programme to practise English outside a classroom environment. Activities include watching popular English films, participating in sports, visiting art galleries and museums, as well as lots of trips and excursions to local and historical areas. The programme is designed to encourage students to use and learn English while immersing themselves in British culture.

  • Learning English gives you access to more of the internet

According to a report by Education First, English is the language of the internet. In 2022 it was estimated that 5 billion people – almost 65% of the world’s population – used the internet, with 170 million new users added in the last year alone. And English is the most common language online, used by 6 million of the top 10 million websites – over 60% of the entire internet’s sites.

Learning English is important as it will let you enjoy over half the content on the internet. Knowing how to read English will allow you access to billions of pages of information which you otherwise would never have read or understood!

The Importance of Learning English Today Although learning English can be challenging and time-consuming, it is also a very valuable language to learn and can create many opportunities!

How to Write Stanford’s “Excited About Learning” Essay

This article was written based on the information and opinions presented by Johnathan Patin-Sauls and Vinay Bhaskara in a CollegeVine livestream. You can watch the full livestream for more info.

What’s Covered:

Choosing an idea vs. an experience, learning for the sake of learning, learning as a means to other ends, be specific.

Stanford University’s first essay prompt asks you to respond to the following:

“ The Stanford community is deeply curious and driven to learn in and out of the classroom. Reflect on an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning. (100-250 words)”

For this short answer question, your response is limited to a maximum of 250 words. In this article, we will discuss considerations for choosing to write about an idea or experience, ways to demonstrate a love or enthusiasm for learning, and why you should be as specific. For more information and guidance on writing the application essays for Stanford University, check out our post on how to write the Stanford University essays .

Regardless of if you choose either an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning as a topic, there are a few considerations for each.

Most people gravitate towards writing about an idea. One challenge that arises with an idea-focused essay is that applicants who are passionate about an idea often become hyper focused on explaining the idea but neglect to connect this idea to who they are as a person and why this idea excites them.

When writing about an experience, it is important to strike a balance between describing the experience and analyzing the impact of the experience on you, your goals, and your commitment to learning.

This essay question allows you to expand on your joy for learning and your genuine curiosity. Stanford is searching for students who are naturally curious and enjoy the process of learning and educating themselves. For example, a compelling essay could begin with a riveting story of getting lost while hiking the Appalachian Trail and describing how this experience led to a lifelong passion for studying primitive forms of navigation.

There is a strong tendency among applicants to write about formal academic coursework, however, the most compelling essays will subvert expectations by taking the concept of learning beyond the classroom and demonstrating how learning manifests itself in unique contexts in your life.

If you’re someone for whom learning is a means to other ends, it is important that you convey a sense of genuine enthusiasm and purpose beyond, “I want to go to X school because it will help me get Y job for Z purpose.” You may be motivated to attend college to obtain a certain position and make a comfortable income, however these answers are not necessarily what admissions officers are looking for. Instead, it can be helpful to relate an idea or experience to something more personal to you.

Academic & Professional Trajectory

Consider relating the idea or experience you choose to a major, degree program, research initiative, or professor that interests you at Stanford. Then go beyond the academic context to explain how the idea or experience ties into your future career.

For instance, if you are interested in the concept of universal health care, then you might describe your interest in applying to public health programs with faculty that specialize in national health care systems. You might then describe your long term career aspirations to work in the United States Senate on crafting and passing health care policy.

Personal Values & Experiences

Another way to tie the ideas in this essay back to a more personal topic is to discuss how the idea or experience informs who you are, how you treat others, or how you experience the world around you.

You could also focus on an idea or experience that has challenged, frustrated, or even offended you, thereby reinforcing and further justifying the values you hold and your worldview.

Community Building & Social Connectedness

You may also explore how this idea or experience connects you to a particular community by helping you understand, build, and support members of the community. Stanford is looking to find students who will be engaged members of the student body and carry out the community’s core mission, values, and projects, so this essay can be an opportunity to highlight how you would contribute to Stanford.

Be specific in your choice of idea or the way in which you describe an experience. For example, a response that focuses on the joys of learning philosophy is too broad to be particularly memorable or impactful. However, the mind-body problem looking at the debate concerning the relationship between thought and consciousness is a specific philosophical idea that lends itself to a rich discussion.

7 Reasons Why I Love Teaching English

Why do you want to be an English teacher? Why teach English in the first place? Let me share with you 7 reasons why I teach English and why it matters to me. Hopefully, you'll get inspired along the way!

7 Reasons Why I Love Teaching English

Why do you want to be an English teacher?

Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is thrilling, challenging, and rewarding. I love teaching English because it provides unique perks, including building bonds with my students and opening the doors to life-changing experiences of teaching English in another country.

Here are 7 reasons why I love teaching English and why I wanted to be an English teacher:

1. The Relationship with Students

Whether you are teaching adults or children, a bond is formed when you teach your students. Meeting weekly getting to know your students is like welcoming a new friend into your life. After a year or even months, your relationship status will most likely be that as 'part of the family.' There is a hospitable and cozy environment when your students or the parents graciously welcome you into their homes or workplaces offering refreshments, food, and peace of mind. As an overseas English teacher, my students are my family abroad.

I’ve never been invited to so many Christmas dinners, birthday parties, summer homes, and trips. In my experience, the most important part of 'the bond' is when parents tell me they are happy with the progress their children are making. They always joke that they don't want me to go back to the U.S. or they will never be able to understand someone speaking in English. At the end of every class, I receive big hugs and sad faces because I have to leave to teach my next lesson. The bond can be seen in many ways and every day I am glad to have work I love.

2. The English Language

Well, the English language and I have a love/hate relationship. (You can see our relationship status as complicated on Facebook). Yes, English is my maternal language. Yes, I was born and raised in the United States. Yes, I am a certified English Teacher. However; I don't know everything about the English language. (Raise your hand if you agree... or don't).

what do you enjoy most about learning english essay

The English love relationship: Teaching English abroad has broadened my vocabulary. It allows me to see different perspectives of topics and conversations with my students, answer weird questions, and see the bigger picture about current events at home and abroad. English is a common language that allows me to communicate with students and locals alike.

The English hate relationship: Teaching English abroad has made my tongue twist way too many times by the end of the day (really my English-speaking friends don't consider me an English speaker anymore). I have been behind in my slang language. My students know more than I do in many cases! Everyone wants their English to be corrected (there just simply isn't enough time in the world to correct everyone). This has made me realize grammar and rules suck, keeping track of British vs. American English word spelling is a pain, and the ability to speak fast is ofter more of a curse than a blessing.

7 Reasons why teaching English in Barcelona, Spain is awesome!

At the end of the day, the English language is one of the most popular languages to learn now, and this high demand enables me to gain employment and live virtually anywhere in the world. Moltes Gracias English.

Demand for English language instruction is so high both in native English-speaking nations and around the world, that one can virtually always find paying opportunities just about anywhere from Tokyo to Toronto. When I chose to teach English in Europe, I was expecting to break even financially .

After arriving in Spain , I soon started teaching private lessons and it was exactly the experience I wanted. Now with 20 students, my schedule is full and arranged to my liking. I make around €800-1,300 ($930 - $1500 USD) a month living comfortably in Barcelona, Spain, and I am able to choose my lifestyle. You can do this too!

I don't have job security or a 401k. It is a risky lifestyle that is not meant for everyone, but I am happy and experiencing life as it comes. Others may choose to pursue more stable or high-paying options teaching in their local public school back in the U.S. or wherever their home country is. The point is that you have options and it's a vocation you can take anywhere.  In fact, you can teach English online and teach students from halfway around the world from just about any country on the planet.

4. Travel Opportunities

Demand for English instructors is global. I teach English because I can live abroad and travel the world, and get paid along the way. Most of the countries in Europe are well connected, which allows you to travel around very easily. Whether your goal is just to know that travel is key — take a solo trip throughout Europe, explore world-renowned museums and restaurants, travel locally, relax by the beach, or go hiking. In my three years abroad, I have had the opportunity to live in France , Italy , and Spain. I’ve also been able to travel to many other European countries. I never could’ve predicted all of the places I’ve been able to go so far.

5. Opportunities to Learn New Languages

As an English teacher, you tend to think more about all aspects of languages. When you are an English teacher abroad like me, it is vital to learn the local language, and that in turn, helps you learn more about English itself. It also makes your daily life much easier. I never thought I could learn two languages at once, but living in Barcelona, Spain, the languages Catalan and Spanish are the heavy influencers. I am currently taking Catalan lessons for free at Consorci Per A La Normalització Lingüística while learning Spanish from friends, picking up words and phrases on the street or when traveling other parts of Spain.

It is a headache learning another language in general and confusing to say the least but it is worth the investment. You may not be a master at the language you want to learn right away, it simply takes time. So keep calm, join a language exchange, practice when you can, immerse yourself in the culture, and drink some liquid encouragement so you can let your barriers down. Teaching English Abroad Allows You to See the World!

6. Making Friends

As a teacher, you become a member of a very special community. As an international English teacher, I came to Europe alone and along the way, I have met: fellow teachers, students, parents, locals, cabbies, roommates, ITA Alumni , and many other like-minded people who share the same passions in many different ways. All of their personalities give me the strength to continue pursuing my dreams. It is amazing how we all came from such different backgrounds and parts of the world yet we share so many similarities in life. There is something about the people I hold dear here in Barcelona. Kaci, Lindsey, Àlex, Jimmy 1, Jimmy 2, Sheila, Kyle, Gavo, Max, and many others, thank you!

7. Making an Impact on People's Lives

Whether you teach English or any other subject, the satisfaction of knowing you can make a meaningful impact on the lives of your students is one of the great feelings you can have. People need and want to learn English for various reasons. Learning English can help people greatly enhance their educational and professional opportunities, and make meaningful improvements to their lives. They can also enjoy much more in the way of music, film and popular culture. The internet is mostly in English. Also, immigrants in countries like the U.S., U.K., and other English-speaking nations also need to learn English to better assimilate and take advantage of economic and educational opportunities in their new countries.

Finally, if I had to choose another thing to treasure while traveling and working as an English teacher besides my passport, it would be my TEFL certification. Because I invested the time and money to get TEFL certified and become a professional English teacher, I’ve been able to make my lifestyle of traveling and learning a reality. The ability to live in a new location every year or six months if I wanted to is just phenomenal.

Where to next? Asia maybe! Now let me ask you the same questions: Why do you want to be an English teacher? Why do you want to teach English?

8 Tips to Write Better Essays in English

Learning a foreign language is an overwhelming experience, especially if it’s one of the most widely spoken languages in the world – English.

Many people are under the impression that learning to read and speak in English is enough without realizing that written English skills are an equally vital asset to have.

From improving academics to boosting career prospects – the ability to write in English not only lets you communicate and express yourself better in today’s globalized world but also makes you more confident.

An effective way to improve your writing skills is to write essays. Wondering where to begin? We bring you eight useful tips to write better essays in English.

1. Keep a Vocabulary Notebook

Using the right vocabulary is an essential element of writing essays. When you make efforts to expand your vocabulary, you will be able to pick accurate words to take your writing to the next level.

Instead of coming across new words and forgetting about them, it’s a good idea to make a note of them in your vocabulary notebook. Doing this helps you remember the meanings of new words and you can also refer to it while writing essays.

So, give yourself a target to learn at least ten new words every day, which you can jot down in your diary and take baby steps in building a strong vocabulary.

2. Refer to Credible Sources

Research forms the first step in writing any kind of essay. The stronger your research, the better is the quality of your essay.

At a time when we have access to a wide range of data, it’s important to evaluate research sources carefully and only refer to credible ones. For example, Wikipedia is not a reliable source and should not be attributed to while writing essays.

Take the effort to read through published journals, research studies, scholarly papers, academic databases, and encyclopedias published within the last 10-15 years. It’s also important to assess the credibility of the author while evaluating the source.

3. Draft a Basic Outline

Once you’ve done your research, don’t rush to write. Take a moment to draft a basic outline for your essay and organize your research and findings.

“Is that necessary,” you ask? Very much.

Working on an outline lets you approach the essay in an organized manner. It serves as the skeleton of your paper while ensuring you’re not missing out on any information and that your points flow logically.

Most essays are categorized into – introduction, body, and conclusion.

The introduction is where you introduce the topic and give context. The body paragraphs need to include your arguments and research methodology (if any). The conclusion needs to reiterate the thesis statement and tie all the points together.

4. Hook the Reader

With attention spans getting shorter with time, it’s become all the more important to start with a bang and hook the reader from the beginning to ensure they are invested in your writing.

Essay hooks refer to the first one or two sentences of your essay which have the power to make or break the reader’s interest. The key is to write a hook that grabs the reader’s attention and reels them in.

From an alarming statistic and relevant quote to using humor and asking a rhetoric question – there are various tactics you can employ to keep the reader engaged.

If you’re unable to think of an impactful essay hook, don’t waste too much time on it. Finish the rest of your essay and come back to write a compelling hook later.

5. Use the Pomodoro Technique

It’s not easy to write an essay in one go, especially if it’s not in your first language.

A smart way to approach essay writing is to use the Pomodoro technique. This technique asks you to set a timer for 25 minutes to finish your task in question and then take a 5-minute break. After four cycles of repeating this, you get to take an extended 20-minute break.

So, start with breaking down the assignment into smaller tasks such as research, outlining, writing the different paragraphs, citing references and proofreading. You can then set the timer, start working on the essay as per the technique and track your progress.

Using this technique keeps distractions at bay and helps you stay more focused.

6. Pay Attention to Grammar Rules

You may raise interesting points in your essay, but poor grammar disrupts the reading experience and should be avoided at all costs.

Be careful when adding punctuations, check your sentence formations, avoid passive voice as much as possible and know the difference between adjectives, adverbs, nouns and verbs.

So  abide by grammar rules to deliver a well-written and cohesive essay.

7. Write with Clarity

You might be tempted to use complex metaphors and jargons to impress the reader, but the truth is, none of that guarantees “good” writing.

One of the most important ingredients of effective writing is clarity. You don’t want to leave the reader confused and puzzled after reading your essay. So, use simple words, stop beating around the bush and explain concepts with the help of examples because clear writing always wins.

8. Reread the Essay

Finally, make it a point to proofread your essay (multiple times) to ensure you have covered all the aspects, cited references accurately and not made any silly errors.

It’s a good idea to read your essay out loud so you’re able to identify errors and awkwardly formed sentences with ease. You should also get a friend or family member to read your essay, to spot mistakes or discrepancies that you may have overlooked.
