Thought Experiment

Daniel Larsen makes us think.

thought experiment crossword clue

By Deb Amlen

FRIDAY PUZZLE — First, happy Valentine’s Day to all who celebrate, and whether you are coupled or not, Wordplay hopes you will be our valentine.

I don’t believe that Daniel Larsen is too young to have a valentine — he’s in his midteens — but I have to say that I admire his sense of subversiveness about the holiday.

He could have made us a puzzle that was all hearts and flowers. But instead of going the mushy route, he gave us the gift of a grid salted with very creative entries, not the least of which is THERE IS NO ESCAPE. You’re awfully young to be so jaded, Mr. Larsen.

Setting that aside, his puzzle really is a gift. At 72 words, it’s not the lowest count crossword puzzle I’ve solved, but Mr. Larsen makes excellent use of every bit of space. His stacked 10s in the northwest and southeast, while not new, are as crunchy as can be. Both SCHRÖDINGER’S CAT and THERE IS NO ESCAPE, symmetrical 15s that plunge down through the grid, are debuts. And you will always win my heart by mentioning Iggy Pop and THE STOOGES.

All in all, a clean and exciting puzzle that I really enjoyed solving, even if it isn’t a box of my favorite chocolates.

1:05:08(!), no errors. I struggled with every part of this one, and finished with no cheats of any kind, but only by virtue of being as stubborn as a mule. I will fall back on two pithy (if essentially contentless) observations: IIWII and AWTEW … 🙂. (“IT IS WHAT IT IS” and “ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL”).

25:35, no errors. This was a weird one. NW and SE fell fairly easily, but I had a lot of problems with the smaller words. Way to keep at it Dave. I usually give up if the going gets too tough. I had Street Tacos in Playa del Carmen…delicious!

30:53, Have listened to a lot of David Guetta’s DJ work, but had to get the down answer to get the correct spelling…thought the “u” was an “i”

38:47, no errors. Agree with previous posters, this was a definite slog. Got deep into the weeds entering MOBIL before EXXON, and BURGER before BIG MAC.

24:27. One error – the Z at ZERO/NEZPERCE ?? Had no idea in either direction. Otherwise, not a bad solve.

The human body has all new cells every few years ( I think it’s every 7 years), and we’re still the same people…presumably…although we do age. But THESEUS’ ship actually gets younger after all parts are replaced, and we get older (well – everyone except me). So is it the same ship? Are we the same people? Yes and no. That’s my definitive answer….

Best –

47 min, and thought I had a clean sweep. Like @jeff , the Z got me.

Thought The 300 were HEROS???

that means 34D wasn’t NE(H)PERCE.

wow, what a name.

Late as usual, but little to say, anyway. One squerror. Rats.
