Diary of a Wimpy Kid #10: Old School

LitPick Review Jonny Age at time of review - 11 Reviewer's Location - Matthews, NC, United States View Jonny's profile Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School by Jeff Kinney is yet another funny Greg Heffley book! Greg’s mom thinks everyone in the community should give up electronics, gets involved volunteering for a Park Clean Up Day, and has crazy new plans to potty-train Manny. Greg’s Dad always seems ready to criticize, and Roderick is working as a mascot at Old Timey Ice Cream, which isn’t turning out to be the kind of job he expected. The family pig is back, and now that Leisure Towers’ rent has gone up, Grandpa has moved in with the Heffley family. There’s not enough room for everyone now. Readers also get to laugh through Greg’s experience at camp with Rowley, Mr. Jefferson, and a demonic farmer named Silas Scratch who is on the prowl. You can’t imagine Greg’s surprise when he discovers one of his Dad’s biggest secrets! Opinion:

How does Jeff Kinney write such a great book about the same family ten times in a row now? I don’t know, but you don’t want to miss all of the adventures or misadventures in this one! Greg’s diary is hand-written every couple of days , and lots of hilarious comic strip pictures add to the story’s action and fun too. It is so easy to read that it is like hanging out with your best friend as he’s telling you about another day in his life. The Heffley’s seem like a traditional American family. Then they always seem to meet the weirdest people, and the weirdest things start happening to them. No situation ever turns out the way everyone thinks it will, and that is what keeps readers coming back to find out what happens next over and over again!

Book Review – Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School

by Jeff Kinney (Penguin) ISBN: 978-0-141-36472-8

book review of diary of a wimpy kid old school

This is the 10 th in the series about the Wimpy Kid, Greg Heffley. They are “novels in cartoons” that have become a worldwide phenomenon since publication of the first diary in 2008. I’d heard of the Wimpy Kid, but Old School is the first I’ve read.

I was surprised (and delighted) to discover it’s illustrated throughout. Each page carries a cartoon on a page that looks like a school exercise book. This format makes it appealing and accessible to its 9-12-year-old target readers. Greg’s diary entries hilariously convey his day-to-day antics as he navigates junior-high, while co-habiting with his middle-class American family, and a venerated pet pig.

When Greg has to support his mother’s initiative to get the neighbourhood electronics free, he asks if life was really better in the old days. Greg documents what happens when Grandpa moves in and requires constant electronic surveillance; brother Rodrik gets arrested in a clown suit; and what ensues in the absence of toilet paper at the summer camp Greg’s forced to attend.

I read this in one sitting and had several laugh-out-loud moments. My 18-year-old loved it too. The Wimpy Kid has enduring appeal, sure to get most reluctant young readers hooked.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID

A novel in cartoons, from the diary of a wimpy kid series , vol. 1.

by Jeff Kinney & illustrated by Jeff Kinney ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 2007

Certain to elicit both gales of giggles and winces of sympathy (not to mention recognition) from young readers.

First volume of a planned three, this edited version of an ongoing online serial records a middle-school everykid’s triumphs and (more often) tribulations through the course of a school year.

Largely through his own fault, mishaps seem to plague Greg at every turn, from the minor freak-outs of finding himself permanently seated in class between two pierced stoners and then being saddled with his mom for a substitute teacher, to being forced to wrestle in gym with a weird classmate who has invited him to view his “secret freckle.” Presented in a mix of legible “hand-lettered” text and lots of simple cartoon illustrations with the punch lines often in dialogue balloons, Greg’s escapades, unwavering self-interest and sardonic commentary are a hoot and a half.

At a time when death has become an acceptable, even voguish subject in children's fiction, Natalie Babbitt comes through with a stylistic gem about living forever.

Protected Winnie, the ten-year-old heroine, is not immortal, but when she comes upon young Jesse Tuck drinking from a secret spring in her parents' woods, she finds herself involved with a family who, having innocently drunk the same water some 87 years earlier, haven't aged a moment since. Though the mood is delicate, there is no lack of action, with the Tucks (previously suspected of witchcraft) now pursued for kidnapping Winnie; Mae Tuck, the middle aged mother, striking and killing a stranger who is onto their secret and would sell the water; and Winnie taking Mae's place in prison so that the Tucks can get away before she is hanged from the neck until....? Though Babbitt makes the family a sad one, most of their reasons for discontent are circumstantial and there isn't a great deal of wisdom to be gleaned from their fate or Winnie's decision not to share it.

by Julia Alvarez ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 13, 2009

Though it lacks nuance, still a must-read.

Tyler is the son of generations of Vermont dairy farmers.

Mari is the Mexican-born daughter of undocumented migrant laborers whose mother has vanished in a perilous border crossing. When Tyler’s father is disabled in an accident, the only way the family can afford to keep the farm is by hiring Mari’s family. As Tyler and Mari’s friendship grows, the normal tensions of middle-school boy-girl friendships are complicated by philosophical and political truths. Tyler wonders how he can be a patriot while his family breaks the law. Mari worries about her vanished mother and lives in fear that she will be separated from her American-born sisters if la migra comes. Unashamedly didactic, Alvarez’s novel effectively complicates simple equivalencies between what’s illegal and what’s wrong. Mari’s experience is harrowing, with implied atrocities and immigration raids, but equally full of good people doing the best they can. The two children find hope despite the unhappily realistic conclusions to their troubles, in a story which sees the best in humanity alongside grim realities.

Diary of a wimpy kid: old school.

Written by Jeff Kinney

Reviewed by Jayden P. (age 7)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a funny chapter book. Greg is the main character. Greg tries all of this old school stuff and makes a mess. The illustrations are sometimes a little funny. In one part of the book someone drops her kid off at school, but the kid holds onto his mom and the wall so that she can’t leave him. The mom gives up and takes the kid back home.

I think that Diary of a Wimpy Kid Old School is awesome because Greg makes people do bad stuff. My favorite part of the book was when Greg and his friend were cutting the limes and Greg gets sprayed in the eye. My favorite character is Greg because he’s the main character. I would have liked it if the illustrations were in color, but they are black and white.

I recommend this book for people grades two and up. You should read the book to see if Greg makes mistakes and to find out if the book is like the old days since it is called Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School.

  2. a book review by David Michael Slater: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School

This formula—and a decade of fan devotion—will no doubt guarantee the success of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School, but this entry feels a bit loose.
