Your plumber work experience bullet points

Whether you’re an apprentice plumber or a seasoned veteran with a specialization in water heating, your work revolves around meticulously examining water systems and optimizing their efficiency and performance. Instead of listing your daily tasks here, focus on the installations and interventions that you’re most proud of.

A lot of your work experience and achievements can be quantified and presented as metrics to make them more effective.

This includes things like the number of installations you’ve overseen, the percentage of planning errors you were able to slice, or material cost optimizations you’ve made. Use metrics like these to back up your work experience bullet points.

  • Highlight the number of plumbing systems you’ve serviced, and your resulting customer satisfaction rates, to show that your work is high-quality.
  • Reaffirm your expertise with specific plumbing tools by showing the impact you’ve had with them, such as using AutoCAD to reduce project error occurrences.
  • Spotlight your leadership skills by mentioning the training or mentoring you’ve led, highlighting the number of students and the impact of the training
  • Emphasize instances where your work designing, servicing, or maintaining plumbing systems led to performance or efficiency gains.

3 Tips for Writing an Entry-Level Plumber Resume

  • If you’re just starting out your career in plumbing, you won’t be required to hold certifications like the Journeyman Plumber License or the Master Plumber License. However, if you have any vocational qualification like the Certified Apprentice Plumber (CAP), add it to your resume.
  • If you’ve gained relevant skills from previous jobs or education, they’re worth listing. Past experience with mechanical or electrical systems, as well as soft skills like customer service and problem-solving, are all valuable in a plumber’s resume.
  • Read the job description carefully and determine the skills that are the most relevant. Display these skills and qualifications, if you have them, toward the top of your skills in your resume. For instance, if a role emphasizes the importance of leak detection, place it at the top of your list.

3 Tips for Writing a Plumber Resume as a Seasoned Expert

  • As an experienced plumber, you may have a specialized area of expertise. If so, draw attention to this in your resume. If you’re a commercial plumber with a specialization in large-scale soldering, make sure your work experience bullet points show off this expertise.
  • Success in plumbing means managing job scheduling, client retention, and budgets. Show recruiters you possess these skills by talking about how you leveraged tools like QuickBooks and ServiceTitan for job scheduling and customer management, and show off your high client retention rates.
  • Plumbing is rife with health risks, so if you emphasize your spotless health and safety track record, you can set yourself apart. Highlight any safety training you’ve led and metrics like your low accident rate throughout your career.

Creating a cover letter is a great opportunity to expand on your achievements. As an example, discuss the thought process behind the plumbing layout redesign you spearheaded for a high-rise commercial building, detailing the factors and potential obstacles you kept in mind throughout.

Regardless of your experience level, a career objective or summary can be a good way to tailor your application, with a specific mention of the company name, and to show your enthusiasm for the job. If you’re more experienced, be sure to include your career highlights and key strengths, such as project management or backflow expertise.

Rather than explicitly listing any soft skills , let them shine through your work experience bullet points. For instance, show off your collaboration and leadership by highlighting cross-functional teams of other types of technicians you’ve worked with, or junior plumbers you’ve mentored.

If you’re looking for a plumber position, be sure your resume highlights you’re currently licensed. Also, show you can diagnose and troubleshoot various plumbing systems, from water lines to septic systems to fixtures like sinks, tubs, and toilets. Depending on if you’re seeking commercial or residential plumbing work, you can adjust your resume accordingly. Below, we share the best resume strategies and examples to help you craft the perfect plumber resume.

1. Summarize your plumber qualifications in a dynamic profile

The main purpose of the profile section of your resume is to pitch yourself to hiring managers while highlighting your top qualifications. Share how many years of experience you have working as a plumber, and then list three or four plumbing tasks you are an expert in, carefully matching them to the job posting.

For example, if a plumbing company is looking to hire plumbers for residential jobs, you could mention your ability to install plumbing fixtures, repair bath and kitchen fixtures, and clean and clear drainage systems. These details will help illustrate you have the exact skills the employer seeks.

Senior-Level Profile Example

A master plumber and foreman with over 10 years of experience in commercial and industrial plumbing, specializing in project management, blueprint analysis, and construction. A proven track record of executing large-scale construction projects with diverse teams. An expert in OSHA safety, personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols, and building codes.

Entry-Level Profile Example

An apprentice plumber with entry-level experience, specializing in piping, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, troubleshooting, and customer service. Adept at assisting licensed plumbers with complex installations, repairs, and maintenance for commercial plumbing systems.

2. Add your plumber experience with compelling examples

Once you’ve engaged the job recruiter with your summary, provide additional details in the experience section, demonstrating your skills, expertise, and industry knowledge.

When possible, describe your work history in a way that emphasizes the results and value you’ve brought to former employers rather than just listing your job duties. For instance, one bullet point might be that you completed a large-scale plumbing installation before the deadline and under budget. If you’ve done higher-level work, you may point out you’ve worked with teams of construction and engineering professionals or took on a supervisory role to ensure OSHA standards were met at a work site.

Senior-Level Professional Experience Example

Master Plumber and Foreman, Philadelphia Water Authority, Philadelphia, PA

May 2020 – present

Entry-Level Professional Experience Example

Apprentice Plumber, Manhattan Plumbing Pros, New York, NY

September 2021 – May 2022

  • Collaborated with plumbing technicians to install sinks, toilets, pipes, water heaters, and HVAC systems for more than 15 clients per week

3. Include education and certifications relevant to plumbers

Because being a plumber requires specific licenses and certifications, you’ll need to list all relevant items on your resume. If you attended a trade school program or earned a degree or certificate related to your work, include that as well.

Plumbers should also include their license number with the expiration date.

  • [Degree Name]
  • [School Name], [City, State Abbreviation] | [Graduation Year]
  • Plumbing Technician Program
  • Brooklyn Trade School, New York, NY September 2014 – May 2016
  • [Certification Name], [Awarding Organization], [Completion Year]

4. Make a list of your plumber-related skills and proficiencies

Including an easy-to-scan list of professional skills can help a recruiter or an applicant tracking system (ATS) quickly identify if you have the key skills they seek. Including keywords from the job posting in your list (and sprinkled into your profile and experience sections) ensures your resume makes it to the next round of review.

Most of those key skills for plumbers will be related to working with common plumbing systems and knowing work site best practices. Here’s a list of common key skills to consider for your resume if you’re seeking work as a plumber:

Key Skills and Proficiencies
Blueprint reading Commercial plumbing
Drainage systems Gas lines
HVAC Industrial plumbing
Installation OSHA safety
Pipe fixtures Piping
Preventative maintenance Project management
Residential plumbing Septic systems
Sewer systems Troubleshooting
Valves Water heaters
Water lines Welding

5. Highlight your project management and work safety skills

Working as a plumber for commercial construction projects or industrial plumbing can require many additional skills beyond what a residential plumber who primarily fixes clogged drains may need. For those more complex roles, consider an additional section in your resume focused on the project management aspects of your work or highlighting your knowledge of site safety protocols.

How To Pick the Best Plumber Resume Template

When choosing a template for a plumber job, prioritize simplicity so your skills and qualifications will speak for themselves. An over-designed look with flashy graphics and colors might work well for a more creative field like marketing or graphic design, but it’s unnecessary and distracting for a trade occupation like plumbing. Stick with a clean, easy-to-read format that isn’t super text-heavy.

How do you align your resume with a plumber job description? -

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, jobs for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters are projected to grow by only 2% from 2021 to 2031. Thus, having a stellar resume is important to compete for the limited job openings available.

Instead of having one generic resume, each time you find a potential job opportunity, tailor it so it’s custom-built for that employer. Look carefully at the job description and then rearrange or tweak your resume to match it as much as possible. You’ll need to stay honest. But emphasizing or highlighting certain skills or job experiences – whether it’s working on sewer lines or maintaining HVAC systems –  can set you apart.

What is the best plumber resume format? -

Reverse chronological resumes are the gold standard, and there’s no reason why a plumber resume should take a different approach. It’s simple and familiar, and hiring managers can quickly see your most recent work highlights to determine if you’re a strong candidate for their role. Functional resume formats, which highlight core competencies and skills groups rather than focus on job history, are more complex and better suited for career changers or people with large employment gaps.

Job prospects

Apprenticeships, continuing education, hard skills versus soft skills.

Plumbers are some of the hardest working handymen, responsible for repairing pipes, fixing leaks and installing toilets, sinks and other fixtures. They’re often called to take care of emergency situations on weekends, evenings and holidays. But for all the trouble of gushing water lines and flooded bathrooms, plumbers are well paid and in demand.

Entry-level Plumber Resume Example

If you’re considering a job as a Plumber, it’s important to remember that this is a trade and not an entry-level job. Plumbers must complete several years of an apprenticeship and be licensed before they are legally allowed to work on their own.

If you’ve been a Plumber for some time, you know that this career is complex with lots to learn as you gain experience. No matter how many years you’ve worked in the field, this guide will help you capture the intricacies of plumbing to land the job you want.

This guide will show you how to:

  • Display your knowledge of the field and show off your sharpest skills
  • Highlight the personality qualities that make you a top-notch employee and coworker
  • Tailor your experience for jobs in commercial or residential plumbing
  • Write a succinct and professional resume that appeals to busy managers

Plumbers are some of the highest paid tradesmen with an average annual salary of $56,910, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you’re looking for a long-term career with no shortage of work, plumbing may be for you.

The realities of plumbing

Tight spaces, dirty water, heavy lifting – plumbing is not exactly glamorous. However, many Plumbers report that they truly enjoy their profession because they make a difference for customers, earn a decent living and experience a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Residential Plumbers are often weekend heroes when something goes awry at the most inopportune time. They know their customers appreciate them and they enjoy contact with a variety of different people every day. They drive between houses and often don’t know what the next project will bring. They can work long and odd hours, but their profit margins are about 40 percent, higher than in commercial plumbing.

Commercial plumbing is much more predictable and usually requires less traveling during the day. Plumbers working in commercial spaces might install two sinks and three toilets in an afternoon. In new buildings, Plumbers are expected to work quickly and communicate often with electricians, inspectors and builders. If you’d prefer to work with a team of tradesmen instead of directly with customers, commercial plumbing might be a great choice for you.

Noting the differences between commercial or residential plumbing and tailoring your resume to the job you’re applying for can help you stand out as an applicant.

While you’re putting together your Plumber resume, you should know the news is not great: the profession expected to grow 5 percent over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics . That’s slower than other professions overall and even faster than other trades, like electricians or building inspectors.

Many new Plumbers will be employed during construction booms when there will be a need for commercial Plumbers who can install large numbers of fixtures and systems in new buildings. With the rising cost of materials and construction, housing starts have been slow. These jobs are susceptible to economic downtown and Plumbers in certain areas might face a shortage of work if construction stops.

Residential plumbing is comparatively more stable, since repairs and maintenance are in demand even during economic downturns.

The profile summary: just the essentials

Think of your profile summary as that cabinet under the kitchen sink: It might not be big, but it’s got all the important stuff.

Your profile summary is your introduction, oftentimes to the person who might be your direct supervisor if you land the job. It’s important to succinctly capture your experience level, focus areas, and training. If you’re looking for a job as a plumbing apprentice, soft skills like teachability and reliability can help you stand out.

Since this is just an overview, focus on the more general categories of work and save the exact details for the skills and experience sections.

Some potential ways to describe yourself:

  • Plumber specializing in residential work and customer service
  • Plumber experienced in large commercial projects with tight time and budget constraints
  • Plumber knowledgeable in the reparation of radiators and heating systems
  • Plumbing apprentice with 400+ hours experience making repairs in homes and offices

Versatile and experienced Plumber dedicated to excellent work and customer satisfaction. Adept in servicing, installing, and maintaining plumbing systems. Skilled in reading blueprints and analyzing building codes before planning procedures. Experienced in installing and repairing residential and commercial sewer and septic systems. Committed to pleasing the customer and adhering to safety guidelines at all times. Proven track record full of the successful completion of many plumbing projects, both small and large scale.

Employment history: in working order

Employers will be looking at previous experience to assess your competency in the field. So let’s blow them away.

Even after completing an apprenticeship, it takes several years of job experience before a Plumber has truly mastered the trade. Your employment history is the proof of your skills section, so this is a great place to get into the details of what you know how to do.

Reverse chronological order , with your most recent experience first, is the best way to list your employment history in this situation. Adding some numbers is a great way to strengthen your experiences. How many customers did you service in a typical week? In a new construction project, how many plumbing fixtures did you routinely install in a day?

Don’t forget complementary tasks you might have completed while working as a Plumber. Things like welding, caulking, cutting and repairing walls show attention to detail and offer additional value to residential customers.

Plumber, Harrison & Co. Plumbing, New York  August 2015 - March 2022

  • Installed, repaired, and maintained domestic water systems in 50+ residences.
  • Diagnosed and found the cause of problems before making a plan of action.
  • Properly identified problems, made repairs, and replaced parts.
  • Performed preventative maintenance and advised customers on proper care.
  • Responded to emergencies during and after work hours

Plumber, Martinez Plumbing, Albany, NY  July 2003 - July 2015

  • Worked to install and maintain the plumbing system in a 40-story skyscraper.
  • Followed standard precautions at all times to ensure safety and success.
  • Worked and communicated with other professionals during construction.
  • Conducted service inspections and tested systems to ensure normal function.

About 30 percent of Plumbers belong to unions, which provide training and can act as an employment hub, according to U.S. federal data. Unions can often be a good place for apprentices to start their job search.

Education: your mental toolbox

Whether you completed an apprenticeship or another training, your plumbing education is an essential part of your resume.

Almost every state or municipality requires an exam and licensing procedure before you can work as a Plumber. While these requirements vary from place to place, learning the trade through an apprenticeship is one of the most common ways of preparing for the exam.

Plumbing, Apex Technical School, Long Island City  July 2002 - June 2003  Associate of Communications, State University of New York at Albany, Albany  August 2000 - May 2002

When it comes to plumbing and other trades, levels of experience are divided into three labels: apprentice, journeyman, and master. A plumbing apprentice often learns from someone who is a certified master Plumber. After passing an exam and obtaining a license, the apprentice becomes a journeyman capable of working without direct supervision.

Even though demand for Plumbers is high, apprenticeships can be competitive since many people show interest in the job and then drop out of the program when the work gets tough. If you are applying for a plumbing apprenticeship, you should be prepared to commit to 4 to 5 years of training and thousands of hours of on-the-job training. Reliability and dedication are key attributes to highlight on your resume when you’re just starting out.

You can find plumbing apprenticeships through technical or trade schools, Plumbers unions or by word of mouth. Local companies will also take on apprentices, although having a recommendation or previous coursework in the field can help you secure one of those coveted spots. Plumbing coursework at a trade school may also include math or science classes. Most plumbing apprenticeships require at least a high school diploma or equivalent to get started.

Just because you’ve achieved the level of journeyman doesn’t mean your education stops. Many states require a certain number of hours of continuing education before they will renew your license. You may also consider studying for and taking the master Plumber examination. This accreditation will allow you to start your own business and supervise younger Plumbers. You might even train apprentices of your own!

If you don’t mind working long days, the profits from plumbing are nothing to sneeze at – an experienced Plumber can make a six figure salary annually.

The skills section: the right tools for the job

When it comes to plumbing, your skills are your greatest asset. This is the place to show them off.

The longer you spend in the field, the more competences you’ll accumulate. If you’re an experienced Plumber, it’s best to cherry-pick the skills you use most often and keep them at the top of your list. If you’re particularly knowledgeable in one particular area or you’re applying to a specialized position, highlight those relevant skills to show off your expertise.

When it comes to plumbing, the distinction between hard skills and soft skills is pretty clear. Hard skills require a tool or specialized knowledge, whereas soft skills are your personality traits and your strengths when it comes to working with others.

Hard skills listing example:

  • Measurement and installation under floors and above ceilings of PVC, metal and copper pipe
  • Installation, cleaning, and management of sewer systems and storm drains
  • Soldering, welding, and applying adhesives, sealants, and caulk
  • Installation and replacement of sinks, toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, and other appliances
  • Unclogging, cleaning, and dislodging objects from toilets, sinks, and other pipes

Soft skills listing example:

  • State building code compliant
  • Follows safety regulations
  • Great communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Good physical fitness and work stamina
  • Excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills
  • Safety and Sanitation
  • Knowledge of Water Supply Systems
  • Diagnostics and Repairs
  • Pipe Fitting
  • Installation of New Systems
  • Excellent Customer Service Skills

A leaking showerhead can waste more than 500 gallons of water a year, according to the EPA (U.S.). Plumbers save customers money on their water bill and help prevent water waste, too.

Technical Skills for a Resume (guide with examples and how-tos)

There are certain occupations in the technology-led STEM fields of science, IT, engineering, data science and maths that require a whole different level of technical skill and industry expertise.

Resume layout and design: your blueprint

You’ve gained experience and mastered your skills. Now, it’s time to construct a layout that gives you the best chance of catching an employer’s attention.

As a Plumber, you know a good design makes the job much easier. The same is true for a hiring manager or master Plumber when reading your resume. To show off your experience and skills, it’s important to keep the layout clean and simple with no color, fancy fonts, or images.

So what’s the best way to put it all together in a jiffy? Our field-tested templates and resume builder tool save time and effort by streamlining the process and making sure your resume has the professional feel you need.

We recommend the templates in our Simple category as the best options for landing a job as a Plumber. You don’t have to worry about unnecessary frills. These templates will present your experiences, skills, and education in an attractive and easy-to-read format.

You’ll probably be sending your resume to plumbing companies by email or printing it to hand to a manager directly. If you’re applying for a plumbing school, you’ll probably be asked to upload it to an online portal. In all of these cases, a PDF is the best file format to make sure your layout doesn’t change from computer to computer and still looks great printed.

With our builder tool, you can create your resume and download it as a PDF in no time at all. Now you’re one step closer to landing a job as a plumber!

Key takeaways for a Plumber resume

Plumber Resume Summary

Your resume summary is your first opportunity to make a great impression on potential employers. It’s the first thing they’ll see, and if it doesn’t grab their attention, they may move on to the next candidate.

As a plumber, you have a unique set of skills and experiences that make you stand out from other candidates. Your resume summary should highlight these qualities and show potential employers why you’re the best candidate for the job.

How to craft a compelling summary

To craft a compelling summary, start by thinking about your unique strengths and experiences as a plumber. What makes you stand out from other candidates? What have you achieved in your career that demonstrates your skills and capabilities?

Next, write a few sentences that capture these qualities and experiences. Use strong action verbs to describe your accomplishments and emphasize the value you can bring to a potential employer.

Finally, make sure your summary is tailored to the specific job you’re applying for. Use keywords from the job description and highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position.

Tips for making it stand out

Here are some tips for making your plumber resume summary stand out:

Keep it short and sweet. A summary should be no more than a few sentences long.

Use strong action verbs to describe your accomplishments. This will make your summary more dynamic and engaging.

Highlight your most relevant experiences and skills. Focus on the qualifications that are most important for the job you’re applying for.

Use keywords from the job description. This will help your resume get noticed by applicant tracking systems (ATS) and improve your chances of getting an interview.

Make sure your summary is well-written and free of errors. Your summary is your first impression, so you want it to be polished and professional.

By following these tips, you can craft a plumber resume summary that stands out and grabs the attention of potential employers.

Plumber Skills

When crafting your resume for a plumbing position, it’s essential to highlight your relevant skills. The following are some key skills to include:

Problem-solving:  Plumbers are often called in to fix complex issues quickly. They need to be able to assess the situation and come up with the best solution to solve the problem efficiently.

Technical proficiency:  Plumbers work with a variety of tools and equipment, such as wrenches, pliers, and saws. They should have extensive knowledge of different types of pipes and fixtures, as well as how to install, repair, and maintain them.

Attention to detail:  Plumbing work often requires precision and accuracy. A small mistake can lead to significant problems down the line. Therefore, plumbers should be detailed oriented and take care to double-check their work.

Communication skills:  Plumbers often work closely with clients and need to be able to explain complex plumbing issues in simple terms. They should also be able to provide clear instructions to their apprentices or assistants.

Time management:  Plumbing emergencies can occur at any time, and plumbers should be able to work well under pressure. They should be able to manage their time effectively to complete tasks promptly and meet deadlines.

Once you’ve identified your primary skills, the next step is to showcase them effectively on your resume. Here are some tips on how to do so:

Use bullet points to list your skills: This makes it easy for recruiters to quickly scan your resume and see the skills you possess.

Mention specific achievements: If you have any notable accomplishments that demonstrate your skills – such as a record of meeting deadlines or solving tricky plumbing issues – be sure to include them.

Tailor your resume to the job description: Review the job listing and ensure that your resume highlights the skills that the employer is looking for in a plumbing candidate.

Give examples: Showcasing your skills through specific examples can make your resume more compelling. For example, you might describe a time when you fixed a stubborn clogged drain or successfully installed a water softener system.

With these tips, you can effectively highlight your skills on your plumbing resume, increasing your chances of securing a rewarding new position.

Plumber Certifications

As a plumber, having relevant certifications can differentiate you from other candidates in the job market. Here is an overview of relevant certifications for plumbers:

1. Journeyman Plumber Certification

A Journeyman Plumber Certification is typically earned after completing an apprenticeship program and passing a state exam. This certification demonstrates that the plumber has completed the required training and has the necessary skills and knowledge to work independently as a plumber.

2. Master Plumber Certification

A Master Plumber Certification requires additional training and experience beyond the Journeyman level. It demonstrates a higher level of expertise in plumbing, including an understanding of plumbing codes, regulations, and advanced techniques.

3. Backflow Prevention Certification

Backflow prevention is essential to protect public health by ensuring that contaminated water doesn’t contaminate the potable water supply. A Backflow Prevention Certification demonstrates that the plumber has the knowledge and skills necessary to install and maintain backflow prevention devices.

4. Green Plumber Certification

With a growing focus on environmentally responsible plumbing practices, Green Plumber Certification demonstrates knowledge and skills in sustainable plumbing solutions. It includes a range of topics such as water efficiency, energy conservation, and sustainable materials.

When highlighting your certifications on your resume, make sure to list them in a prominent position. Consider including them in your summary or objective statement, and create a separate section to list them. Be sure to include the certification name, the organization that awarded it, and the date of certification.

You can also highlight your certifications in your job descriptions, showing how you applied your certified skills to provide value to your previous employers. For example, “Successfully installed backflow prevention devices to ensure safe potable water supply, in accordance with Backflow Prevention Certification requirements.”

Having relevant certifications can help make your resume stand out from the crowd. Be sure to highlight your certifications prominently and show how you’ve applied your certified skills in your previous work experience.

Professional Experience

When it comes to writing a plumber resume, your professional experience is one of the most important sections to focus on. This is where you showcase your skills, accomplishments, and past work experience to potential employers. In this section, we’ll provide some tips for describing your professional experience and making it relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Tips for Describing Your Professional Experience

Use Action-Oriented Language: When describing your past work experience, use action-oriented language to emphasize your skills and accomplishments. Instead of passive phrases like “responsible for,” use active phrases like “developed” or “implemented.” This will make your experience sound more impressive and engaging.

Quantify Your Accomplishments: Whenever possible, quantify your accomplishments with numbers or percentages. For example, if you increased productivity on a certain project by 20%, mention this in your resume. This will give potential employers a clearer understanding of your achievements and impact.

Focus on Relevant Experience: Make sure to focus on your most relevant work experience when describing your professional background. If you’re applying for a plumbing role, highlight your past experience in plumbing or related fields, such as HVAC or construction. Avoid lengthy descriptions of unrelated experiences to limit clutter and better target the focused roles.

How to Make Your Experience Relevant to the Job You’re Applying For

Tailor Your Experience to Match the Job Description: When crafting your resume, analyze the job requirements and tailor your experience to match the role. Highlight your experience and accomplishments that align with the job description. This will make your resume more relevant and attractive to potential employers.

Demonstrate Transferable Skills: Even if you haven’t worked in a plumbing-specific role in the past, you may still have transferable skills that are relevant to the job. For example, if you’ve worked in HVAC or construction, you may have skills in pipefitting, soldering, and other essential plumbing tasks. Mentioning these skills in your resume can demonstrate your versatility and make you an attractive candidate.

Highlight Any Certifications or Licenses: If you have any plumbing certifications or licenses, make sure to mention them in your resume. This shows potential employers that you have the necessary training and qualifications for the job.

By following these tips, you can make your professional experience stand out in your plumber resume and demonstrate your value to potential employers. Take the time to craft a well-structured and targeted resume that showcases your skills and accomplishments.

When it comes to creating a plumber resume, listing your education is an important component. It can show potential employers that you have the necessary knowledge and skills for the job.

Here are some tips on how to list your education on your resume, along with what to include and what to leave out.

How to List Your Education on Your Resume

  • Start with your most recent educational achievement first.
  • Include the name of the degree, institution, and date of graduation.
  • If you have relevant coursework or certifications, list those as well.
  • If you have a degree that is not directly related to plumbing, but still has relevant coursework, include that too.

For example, your education section might look something like this:

  • Certification in Plumbing, XYZ Technical Institute, May 2021
  • Associate’s Degree in HVAC, ABC Community College, May 2019
  • Relevant Coursework: Plumbing for Residential and Commercial Buildings, ABC Community College

What to Include

When listing your education on your plumber resume, include relevant degrees, certifications, and coursework. This could include:

  • Plumbing certification or apprenticeship
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in plumbing or a related field
  • Relevant coursework in plumbing, HVAC, or construction

Including these items can show employers that you have the necessary knowledge and skills for the job.

What to Leave Out

While it’s important to include relevant education, there are some things you should leave out of your plumber resume. This includes:

  • High school education (unless you are a recent graduate with no other education)
  • Irrelevant degrees or coursework (e.g. a degree in literature, unless you have relevant coursework in plumbing)

By leaving out irrelevant education, you can keep your resume focused and make a stronger case for why you are the right candidate for the job.

Listing your education on your plumber resume is an important part of showcasing your qualifications. By following these tips and including relevant education while leaving out unnecessary details, you can create a strong plumber resume that highlights your skills and experience.

Achievements and Awards

As a plumber, including achievements and awards on your resume is crucial. Not only do they showcase your skills, but they also differentiate you from the competition. Hiring managers want to see tangible evidence of your proficiency and accolades are a great way to prove your worth.

To effectively showcase your achievements and awards, make sure they are prominently displayed on your resume. Consider creating a separate section specifically for this information or interspersing them throughout your work experience section.

When writing about your achievements, be specific and quantify whenever possible. For example, instead of simply stating that you improved the plumbing system in a commercial building, mention that you increased water pressure by 40%. This type of detail gives hiring managers a better understanding of your abilities and accomplishments.

Similarly, when listing awards, make sure to include the name of the award, the organization that granted it, and the date. If the award was specific to a project or accomplishment, make sure to mention that as well.

It’s important to keep in mind that not all awards or achievements will be relevant to every job you apply for. Tailor your resume to the specific job you’re applying for and highlight the accomplishments that best demonstrate your skills for that particular role.

Including achievements and awards on your plumber resume can set you apart from other candidates and demonstrate your expertise to hiring managers. Take the time to showcase them effectively and make sure they are specific and relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Plumber Resume Mistakes to Avoid

As a plumber, your resume is your introduction to potential employers. It’s important to avoid common resume mistakes that can hurt your chances of getting hired. Here are some tips to help you avoid those mistakes:

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. spelling and grammar errors.

Spelling and grammar errors on your resume can make you look unprofessional and careless. Take the time to proofread your resume for errors, or ask a friend or family member to read it over for you.

2. Lack of Keywords

Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan resumes for keywords that match the job posting. If your resume doesn’t include the right keywords, it may not make it past the ATS. Review the job posting and try to incorporate relevant keywords into your resume.

3. Unprofessional Email Address

Your email address should be professional and easy to remember. Avoid using a nickname or an email address that is inappropriate or difficult to remember.

4. Irrelevant Information

Include only relevant information on your resume. Avoid including personal information, such as your age, race, or religion. Focus on your skills, experience, and qualifications that are relevant to the job.

Tips for Avoiding These Mistakes

1. use a resume template.

Using a resume template can help ensure that your resume is organized and easy to read. There are many free templates available online that you can use as a starting point.

2. Customize Your Resume for Each Job

Review the job posting and customize your resume to highlight your skills and experience that are most relevant to the job. This will increase your chances of getting noticed by the employer.

3. Proofread Your Resume

Before submitting your resume, make sure to proofread it for spelling and grammar errors. You can also ask a friend or family member to read it over for you.

4. Use Good Judgment

Use good judgment when deciding what information to include on your resume. Avoid including personal information that is not relevant to the job, and focus on highlighting your relevant skills and experience.

By avoiding these common resume mistakes, you can increase your chances of getting hired as a plumber. Remember to customize your resume for each job and use good judgment when deciding what information to include.

What makes a Plumber Cover Letter Effective

A strong plumber cover letter should be clear, concise, and engaging. It should be easy to read and showcase your relevant skills and experiences. Here are some key elements that make a plumber cover letter effective:

What’s the Best Plumber Resume Format

So you’re ready to put together your own resume.

First, decide how you want to organize your skills, work history, and more.

To determine which resume format you should use, you’ll need to consider your experience .

If you have more than two years of professional plumbing experience, the best choice is a reverse-chronological format.

This works well because it focuses on your most recent experience —recruiters want to see hands-on expertise from candidates above all else.

If you’re writing a plumber apprentice resume or your first professional resume , you might want to choose another type of format.

Functional or combination resumes work best if you have less experience.

These put more emphasis on skills but still touch on experience.

Ultimately, your resume should quickly communicate your best features so you keep the interest of hiring managers and get better results.

How to Write a Plumber Resume Summary or Resume Objective

The recruiter picks up your plumber’s resume.

The first thing they’ll see is your resume objective or summary. This is your chance to really grab a hiring manager’s full attention by highlighting your qualifications.

Creating a plumber resume objective or summary will depend on your prior experience or lack thereof.

Use the job advertisement to focus your resume summary on what the employer wants.

Both resume summaries and objectives are your tools to get attention on your application immediately.

Recruiters don’t have a lot of time to review thousands of candidate resumes, so your summary or objective is a great way to snag a few extra seconds of their attention.

With around three sentences you can quickly win over the potenial employer with some juicy tidbits about your professional history or goals for the position.

What does this look like in practice?

In the section below, we look over two plumber resume examples .

From this, you can see the right way and the wrong way to create one.

Plumber Resume Summary Example

The resume summary can be your gateway to the job .

A resume summary should highlight your experience and show some data that proves you were successful.

Professional plumber with strong experience in maintenance and installation in homes and businesses. Dedicated approach and long history of customer satisfaction.

This won’t cut it. It’s way too generic.

While the previous summary example does talk about some plumbing duties for a resume it doesn’t tell us much about them.

Detail is the key thing missing here.

Every resume you send to a job vacancy needs to be tweaked and tailored to suit the specific profile the employer wants.

This means adding in some choice achievements and data from your career, to add a personal touch to your resume.

Let’s see what a more optimized example might look like with this in mind.

Licensed plumber with 5+ years of professional residential and commerical plumbing experience. A strong record of troubleshooting complex problems with pipe systems and water pumps. Maintains a customer satisfaction rating of 95%.

Give that person a plunger and wrench , we have our candidate!

This is much more likely to give you a shot at an interview for a few reasons.

Firstly, we’ve got specific figures.

A “customer satisfaction rating of 95%”, “5 years professional experience”, actual data the recruiter can use!

This gives them a much clearer idea of what you can do from the start.

Not only that, it talks more about specific tasks you have done on the job rather than just generic responsibilities that nine out of ten plumbers can do.

This focused and individualized approach gives you a much greater shot at getting on the shortlist.

Plumber Resume Objective Examples

f you are a plumbing specialist with little to no professional experience , a resume objective is the way to go.

In your objective, you should :

  • Mention your career targets and aspirations
  • Highlight your relevant skills

Let’s look at how not to write your objective .

Highly skilled plumber with organizational skills and a fantastic record of punctuality. Interested in improving and learning in a new position.

This statement is really generic, short, and vague. We can do better.

Certified plumber looking for an apprenticeship opportunity to demonstrate my strong repair skills and knowledge. Offers significant construction/laborer expertise, including home and bathroom plumbing modifications .

Now, this will knock a hiring manager’s socks off. By writing your resume objective like this, you’ll hit all the points that a job recruiter wants to see.

How to Describe Your Plumbing Experience on Your Resume

So far, so good.

You’ve written a stellar plumbing resume summary or objective.

Now is the time to build on that momentum with an equally strong experience section.

This is where you can list all the most eye-catching plumber duties and responsibilities on the resume.

Don’t repeat tasks you did in multiple job entries. Introduce core skills early and use more recent jobs to highlight skills you learned.

If using a reverse-chronological format, list your present position first and track back through your work history.

Give each job its own entry, detailing key information about the position such as:

  • Name of your employer
  • Dates you worked there
  • 4-6 bullet points describing your responsibilities

Each job you include needs to help sell you for the specific role that you’re targeting.

Like the resume summary, you’ll need to optimize it for each position you formally apply for.

Let’s see this in action.

Plumber Resume Examples: Experience

There are plenty of ways to include plumbing experience on your resume.

However, ensuring you get the right information for the position you’re focusing on is most important.

Something that the example below fails to do entirely.

Plumber EZ Plumbing | St Louis, MO 2019 – 2020

  • Installed plumbing systems.
  • Responded to callouts promptly.
  • Inspected work to ensure effective quality.
  • Maintained effective safety standards.

The description doesn’t make the candidate stand out whatsoever. A recruiter could receive a thousand resumes like this and be unable to tell them apart.

It’s time for a different approach…with specifics .

As you might imagine, a commercial plumber resume and a master residential plumber resume won’t be the same .

An industrial plumbing or pipe fitting resume will not look a journeyman plumber resume example either.

Modify your resume to what the employer needs beyond anything else.

Here’s how to do this better:

  • Responded to 20-35 client calls per week.
  • Installed bespoke plumbing systems in 15+ premium homes and condominiums.
  • Performed routine inspections, identifying potential problems and saving customers from costly future repairs.
  • Maintained a 97% customer satisfaction rating on Google and Facebook..

Now, this is more like it!

Firstly, this lists plumber duties that will make you a hit with recruiters in an easy-read , scannable format.

Plus, the candidate qualified their duties by including relevant achievements he could also accomplish in a similar role with a different company

This makes placing you as a good fit for the role much easier.

Is Your Education Section Causing a Blockage? It Might Be

Whether you’re writing an apprentice plumber resume or a master plumber resume, your education section needs some punch to it.

You won’t need a Ph.D. in plumbing to be a top contender.

However, a well-prepared education section will give your resume and your chances a huge boost.

Don’t overload your education section. A few points that show the specifics of your qualification should be enough to see you through.

So, what does a plumber resume need to succeed in this context?

Your licenses and apprenticeship, or vocational qualifications, are key.

Add this and then highlight some areas of focus or specialties that fit with the open position.

Some recruiters may also want to see evidence you’ve got a high school diploma; however , this isn’t usually a requirement.

Plumber Resume Education Section

Now that we’ve discussed how a plumber education section works in theory, let’s see how it’s done in practice .

In the case of the sample plumber resume section below, we can see that it doesn’t quite get things right.

Plumbing Apprenticeship Oakbridge Community College | St Louis, MO 2017 – 2020

Successfully completed the course. Achieved plumbing license.

Unfortunately, it’s kind of ‘meh’ for an education section.

We can read that the candidate has completed a plumbing course but that’s it.

There’s nothing else to it other than that.

A bit of extra detail is needed here to spark interest.

This optimized example below is better.

  • Shadowed to master plumbers during work placements.
  • Journeyman license #123456, P-I (Plumbing -Class I) Contractor | St Louis Department of Maintenance

Now, this is a plumber resume sample education section to be proud of .

It not only details the key points about the course the candidate studied.

Plus, states and cities require plumbers to be licensed and certified. Therefore, you must also include your certifications in your education section.

Just that small amount of extra detail can give you the edge over other candidates.

In the end, your education section doesn’t need to be all that long , especially if you’ve got a few years of experience under your belt.

The Best Plumbing Skills for Your Resume

You’re a plumber; you know you’ve got skills .

But what skills make an impact?

Well, this depends on the job you’re targeting.

Once again, let the individual job description guide you on what to prioritize.

Generally speaking, most employers will look for a few specific abilities s.

These include your knowledge of pipe materials , whether you have industrial, commercial or residential expertise and similar professional technical knowledge.

However, don’t forget that soft skills count as well.

Personal intrinsic skills like your ability to spot issues to resolve, friendly persona, or stamina will also work well in your favor.

The best plumbing skills for your resume include:

Soft Skills

  • Problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Flexibility
  • Attention-to-detail
  • Customer service

Hard Skills

  • Piping systems
  • Heating systems
  • OSHA certification
  • Repair and inspection

How to Add Other Sections for an Effective Resume

So now you’ve aced the summary, experience, skills, and education sections.

That’s your plumbing resume done , right?

More can fit on the page, depending on the plumber job description for your resume.

Only add extra sections if there’s enough space to do so and you have something relevant to show.

If the job profile requires it or you have extra skills to showcase , you can add more information, like:

  • Languages you’ve learned
  • Certificates you’ve earned
  • Awards you’ve won
  • Relevant interests and hobbies

However, less is more. Make sure you only include skills relevant and important to the position.

A resume for a plumber template can only fit so many features before it becomes cluttered.

Plumbing Resume “Other” Sections

If you want to put together the best plumber resume, add an extra section or two to highlight some other career features employers will respond positively to.

Things can go terribly wrong if you veer into unprofessional territory, much like our example candidate below.

  • Chainsaw juggling
  • Monster trucks

Nope, this won’t do the trick.

These interests are not bad hobbies but they don’t relate to the plumbing industry .

They’re not relevant and the recruiter won’t really be able to do much with this information.

They might even be put off calling you in for an interview altogether. Instead, focus on things relevant to the job.

Let’s see how a more accomplished version of the other sections can look below.

The example candidate has introduced more relevant skills, like their ability to speak spanish.

Plumbing is a customer service job , and speaking another language can be valuable in this context.

Like the other example, they’ve also added a short and sweet hobbies and interests section . But this time, they kept it focused on activities that show they have an active life .

Physical strength and stamina are important in plumbing and this extra evidence of your dedication to those could help move things forward.

A resume for a plumber won’t need too many extra sections, but choosing the right ones can make a big difference.

Selecting the Right Format for Your Plumber Resume

Choosing the right format for your plumber resume is crucial. You should opt for a reverse-chronological format if you have extensive experience. For those starting their career, a functional format is ideal. Finally, a combination format suits plumbers with a balanced mix of skills and work experience.

Writing Your Plumber Resume Summary/Objective

‘Motivated apprentice plumber with a knack for quickly identifying and resolving plumbing issues.’

When detailing your work experience on your plumber resume, it’s crucial to illustrate your skills effectively. List your roles in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent position. Be specific about your duties and accomplishments in each role to provide a clear picture of your capabilities.

Job Title (most recent) – Company Name, Location, Dates of Employment

Provide a brief description of your role and responsibilities. Highlight any significant achievements, projects, or skills acquired during this time.

Education & Certifications

  • High School Diploma: Mention your high school education, particularly if you have taken relevant coursework such as shop or mechanical drawing.
  • Trade School or Technical College: If you’ve completed a plumbing program at a trade school or technical college, be sure to include it. Mention any specific coursework related to plumbing, such as pipe system design, blueprint reading, or welding.
  • Apprenticeship: An apprenticeship is a crucial part of a plumber’s education. Indicate the duration of your apprenticeship and the skills you’ve acquired during this period.
  • Certifications: List any plumbing certifications you hold‚Äîsuch as a journeyman or master plumber certification‚Äîin this section. These certifications demonstrate your proficiency and dedication to the trade.

Remember, the aim of this section is to showcase your commitment to the plumbing profession through your educational background and certifications. Tailor it to highlight the most relevant information for the job you’re applying for.

Plumbers are one of the most essential workers within our society – after all, no house or building can function without proper plumbing! As you begin your journey to secure a position as a plumber, it is essential to write a resume that highlights your best skills and qualifications .

In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about writing the optimal plumber’s resume to land the job you’re pursuing.

Keep reading to learn the answers to the following questions:

  • Which format best fits your experience level as a plumber?
  • How do you write an effective plumber resume summary?
  • What skills should a plumber include on a resume?
  • How should a plumber write their work experience section?
  • What is the best way to list education on a plumber’s resume?

Plumber Resume Sample

1. Which format best fits your experience level as a plumber?

When choosing a resume format , there are a few different choices to choose between:.

  • Reverse-chronological : This resume places the greatest emphasis on your work experience, making it the largest and most central section on the document. Your most recent job is listed first and works backward from there.
  • Functional : The functional resume showcases education, skills, and unpaid experience over work experience. This is well suited for recent graduates or those without relevant work history.
  • Hybrid : The hybrid resume combines the reverse-chronological and functional formats. This works well for applicants who have some relevant experience, but not enough to fill an entire resume.

Choosing between these formats as a plumber is highly dependent on what professional level you are or which license you hold.

Here is a breakdown of the best format for apprentice, journeyman, and master plumbers:

Apprentice plumbers are the newest to the job, and likely do not have the proper licensure to work independently just yet. Likewise, they will often not have enough work history to fill a whole resume – making the functional resume the best choice for apprentices.

Journeymen generally work for 1 to 3 years as apprentices before leveling up to this license. As a result, they often have a robust history of work experience to showcase on a resume, making the reverse-chronological resume the best choice. However, if a plumber is newly at the journeyman level, the hybrid resume may be best.

Master plumbers are the highest level within the field. They will have 5+ years of experience and will often own their own plumbing business and serve as a mentor for apprentices. For masters, the reverse-chronological resume format is the ideal choice, as it will showcase their years of experience.

2. How do you write an effective plumber resume summary?

Resume summaries are incredibly important, as they help to introduce both the document and the applicant to the employer. In your resume summary is where you should highlight your best credentials, accomplishments, and skills. Here is an example of a weak resume summary for a plumber, followed by an explanation on how to correct it.

Incorrect plumber resume summary example:

Plumber with years of experience working in residential neighborhoods laying pipe. Skilled in the maintenance, installation, and repair of plumbing systems.

What's wrong with this example? This resume summary is on the right track but ultimately fails to offer a strong level of specificity. Additionally, the skills listed are those expected of any plumber – instead, the applicant should focus on what makes them stand out, such as specializations.

Corrected plumber resume summary example:

Journeyman Plumber with 3+ years of experience working in residential neighborhoods. Specialized in pipelaying and pipefitting, with an innovative and adaptable mindset guiding a customer-centric approach.

Why is this better? In this example, the applicant clearly states their level (journeyman) and how many years of experience they have. They go on to list their specific specializations, as well as three key skills they believe to be their strongest assets (innovative, adaptable, customer-centric).

3. What skills should a plumber include on a resume?

As a plumber, you work hard to gain the years of experience needed to be a reputable and trustworthy member of the industry. However, your technical abilities are not all there is to you – you also have a plethora of interpersonal skills that are important to highlight on your resume as well.

Here are 10 examples of both technical and interpersonal skills that look great on a plumber’s resume:

Technical skills

  • Reading & assessing blueprints
  • Installing & repairing piping
  • Quality control
  • Project management
  • Basic mathematics
  • Gas pipe installation & maintenance
  • Backflow device installation & repair
  • Digital leak monitoring system installation
  • Adept with hand and power tools

Interpersonal skills

  • Verbal & nonverbal communication
  • Team supervision & leadership
  • Apprentice mentorship
  • Troubleshooting/Problem-solving
  • Customer service & consultations
  • Persuasion (specifically in regards to upselling investments in new systems)
  • Friendly & personable demeanor
  • Reliability
  • Independence
  • Cooperation

4. How should a plumber write their work experience section?

As you write your work experience section of your resume as a plumber, it is important to think beyond your basic abilities.

Your license and years of experience, as well as the skills you list, will cover a lot of the basics – your work experience descriptions are where you should get more creative and include key accomplishments or notable responsibilities.

Here is an example of a strong work experience entry from a plumber resume:

Journeyman Plumber | Clydesdale Plumbers

New York, NY | June 2016 to September 2020

  • Expertly installed and repaired pipework in residential homes, including the installation of plumbing fixtures.
  • Educated customers on new digital leak monitoring systems, increasing the installation and sale of these systems by 15% .
  • Supervised and assessed the work of apprentice plumbers, helping more than 20 to earn their journeyman licensures.

5. What is the best way to list education on a plumber’s resume?

To become a plumber, the highest level of education required is a high school diploma or GED. As such, your education section should focus less on your academic history and more on your official plumbing training and licensure.

There will be different licensing requirements depending on your state, so make sure your credentials are up to par with your place of residence.

Here is an example of a well-crafted education section on a plumber’s resume:

  • Master Plumber
  • Contractor (CMC-A) | Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Board for Licensing Contractors

High School Diploma | Knoxville High School

  • Graduated 2012

How to Write a Plumber Resume

The two key elements of a winning resume are the correct format and optimal length .

The go-to resume format for plumbers is a chronological resume, where you list your employment history from the most recent role to the former positions. Then add all your educational history.

Length-wise, your resume needs to fit into one page. Resumes that are longer than that are often ignored entirely. Once you have a solid first draft, trim any excess content, and focus on getting your point across with a lot of brevity.

Below are several more tips to help you create a stellar plumber resume.

Use the BLUF Principle

BLUF, short for “bottom line up front”, is a military communication principle, which says that the most important details should always come first. It was designed to promote speed and clarity in reports, but you can (and should!) also apply it to your resume.

Place the key information in your resume header . Include a professional summary of your qualifications, followed by a summary of your skills. This way you can instantly showcase what you bring to the table.

Integrate Keywords Into Your Resume

ATS (applicant tracking system) is a relatively new technology that is used to screen resumes and applications before they are reviewed by a human being. This software scans for keywords to determine whether you meet basic qualifications for further consideration. So you must pack the right wording in your resume.

For example, the plumber’s resume example above uses words and phrases that indicate the applicant has commercial and residential experience, and that they are OSHA certified. You can identify keywords to include in your resume by reviewing the job listing and adding words and phrases that are relevant to your background.

Demonstrate Progression

Employers want to see well-rounded and motivated candidates. You have two ways of showing your professional growth:

  • By highlighting training and upskilling programs
  • By drawing attention to your career progression

In the sample above, you can see how the applicant came into the profession, what sort of training they’ve completed over the past several years, and which certifications they hold. Such information clearly communicates that they’re eager to learn and can adopt more responsibilities as needed.

Final Tip: Use the Correct Format

This is more technical than the other tips. Your resume should be saved in an easy-to-open format. PDF files work well for this. Many job listings will include instructions on the file format you should use, and how to save or upload your resume. If you don’t want to bother with file conversions, try our free resume builder . With it, you’ll get a PDF resume generated in several easy steps!

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a Plumber Resume

In this competitive job market, employers receive an average of 180 applications for each open position. To process these resumes, companies often rely on automated applicant tracking systems, which can sift through resumes and eliminate the least qualified applicants. If your resume is among the few that make it past these bots, it must still impress the recruiter or hiring manager. With so many applications coming in, recruiters typically give each resume only 5 seconds of their attention before deciding whether to discard it. Considering this, it's best to avoid including any distracting information on your application that could cause it to be thrown away. To help make sure your resume stands out, review the list below of what you should not include on your job application.

  • Not including a cover letter. A cover letter is a great way to explain why you are the best candidate for the job and why you want the position.
  • Using too much jargon. Hiring managers do not want to read a resume full of technical terms that they do not understand.
  • Omitting important details. Make sure to include your contact information, educational background, job history, and any relevant skills and experiences.
  • Using a generic template. Take the time to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. This will show the employer that you are serious about the position.
  • Spelling and grammar errors. Always double-check your resume for typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.
  • Focusing too much on duties. Make sure to include accomplishments and successes to show the employer that you are a great candidate.
  • Including personal information. Avoid including any personal information such as age, marital status, or religious beliefs.
