When you’re adding skills to a resume, you don’t just want to focus on what you’re good at. Instead, relevancy has to be part of the equation. After all, every job you’re trying to land requires a very specific skill set, one that you need to show that you have.

Choosing the skills to put on a resume when you’re applying to a role isn’t something you should do haphazardly. Instead, you want to use the job description, company mission, and company values as a guide, creating a sense of alignment.

Additionally, it never hurts to have a handy list of skills by your side, making it easier to explore your options. So, if you’re on the hunt for good skills to put on a resume, here’s what you need to know.

Hard Skills vs. Soft Skills

There are two basic types of skillsets that a job seeker can have and include on their resume: hard skills or soft skills.

Hard skills are the skills or abilities for a resume that are easily quantifiable…that can be learned through classroom work, apprenticeships, or other forms of learning. These include things like operating tools, computer programming, speaking foreign languages, or different kinds of technical prowess.

Soft skills are more subjective and harder to quantify and are often grouped together by what we know as “people skills.” Some examples of soft skills include communication, relationship building, self-awareness, and patience.

Which Skills Are More Important?

The debate rages on about which of these two types of skills is more important.

According to executive consultant and Forbes contributor Naz Beheshti , “…There is an ongoing debate about the relative importance of soft and hard skills that imply a competition between the two. However, they are both necessary and complementary to one another.”

On the one hand, job seekers with proficiency in a specific hard skill may get hired more quickly. Many employers want to hire people that can deliver value with fewer resources (ex., the need for training, etc.), making hard skills their priority.

However, we are also seeing that many hiring managers are choosing to hire candidates with highly developed soft skills.

In the end, as Indeed puts it, “soft skills are necessary to create a positive and functional work environment.” Plus, hiring managers feel that they can always train the candidate in the hard skill that is required to complete the job, but soft skills are often skills that cannot necessarily be taught.

So, what does this mean for you? Mainly that you can’t simply just pick one or the other and cross your fingers. Instead, the best strategy is to take a balanced approach and make sure that your resume contains both hard and soft skills.

How Do You Choose the Skills to List on a Resume?

Here’s the deal; there’s a good chance you know what you’re good at in a professional sense. Often, you can use your experience, duties, training, and education as a guide, giving you a strong foundation. Then, it’s about diving a bit deeper, looking at traits that could help you stand out, and comparing it all to the job description.

By using a simple process, you can make progress faster. Here’s a quick way to get started.

1. Make a List of the Skills You Know You Have

As mentioned above, the easiest way to get a grip on your current skills is to reflect on your academic and professional experiences. Consider the tasks you’ve taken on, the training you’ve completed, and the courses you had in school. In most cases, that’ll give you some solid ideas about your hard skills.

After that, it’s time for soft skills. Here, you want to think of traits or capabilities that help you engage with others and navigate professional relationships. Often, these are reflections of your personality, so use that as a jumping-off point.

2. “Mine” the Job Descriptions for Must-Have Skills

The next step is to take a look at the job description for the position you are applying for and make a list of the required skills it includes. Then, compare it to your capabilities. Are any of the skills on both of the lists you just created? If so, these are must-haves for your resume.

Now, notice if there are any skills on the job description that you don’t have. If there aren’t any, great!

But if there are…don’t panic. There are things you can do, which we’ll dig into shortly.

3. Tailor Your Skills to the Company/Position

If you want a quick overview, the idea is to focus on capabilities the company wants to find. Every job requires a unique skill set, and you want to show you have it. As a result, it is absolutely essential that skills from the job description make an appearance on your resume.

However, you also want to dig deeper. Spend some more time researching the company, including going through all of their various web properties, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages.

Why? Because they will leave clues about the types of people they hire. That gives you more ideas about the best skills to put on a resume to land a job there, particularly when it comes to soft skills you may not find in a job description.

What If I Don’t Have the Required Skill?

Whether you need to possess a specific skill depends on the job and the skill in question. Usually, here’s where you have to be honest with yourself. If the skills required are part of the core competencies of doing the job, you may want to reconsider your application.

For example, if a golf course posts a job posting for a golf pro, you probably shouldn’t apply if you’ve never swung a golf club.

However, you will come across situations where what you bring to the table is close. In this case, moving forward might be okay.

You need to be able to demonstrate, using examples from your past, that you are capable of doing the required skill, even if you haven’t specially done it. So, go over your work history with a fine-tooth comb and try to come up with a few examples of you doing something in the right ballpark.

They are going to ask about it in your interview, so don’t think you can just wing it, and everything will be fine.

Also, many job descriptions have “nice-to-have” skills on the list. If you happen to possess them, great. But if not, don’t assume you shouldn’t apply if you have the must-have skills. In the end, those capabilities aren’t outright requirements, so don’t screen yourself out based on them.

How To List Skills on a Resume

There are a few different schools of thought when it comes to deciding where to put (or how to list) the skills on your resume.

According to our friends over at online resume-builder Zety.com , “…skills are so very, very important that they should show up all over your resume. Not just in the resume skills section.” In other words, it is imperative that there are elements of your skills throughout your resume, including your resume objective/summary and experience sections.

In addition, there isn’t one right answer for where to include your skill section because that depends on the industry, company, and position you’re trying to land. For example, for a job where technical competencies are of the utmost importance, it is often beneficial to list the skills closer to the top of the resume, right underneath the resume objective or resume summary statement.

However, if through your research you determine that the hiring manager will put more weight into your experience, you may want to lead with your experience. Then, put the skills section further down your resume.

At the end of the day, the selection of the skills themselves is the most important thing. After all, most hiring managers will easily find your skill section regardless of where it is on your resume.

What About Skills for My Job Application?

When you’re looking for skills to put on a job application, you do have to treat it a little differently than skills for a resume. Usually, you’re working with a finite amount of space on an application, not just in an overall sense but in each applicable section.

Since that’s the case, you need to lean heavily on the job description. Look for any capabilities that are listed as must-haves or that are repeated through the job ad. Then, make sure those skills are featured prominently in several areas, including in work history descriptions and skills areas.

If you have to answer essay questions, discuss those skills there, too, whenever possible. Use any other relevant capability as a supplement, treating it as supporting information instead of the primary point you’re sharing.

However, if an essay question asks about a skill that’s not in the job description, feel free to dig in a bit. It’s a capability that’s clearly on the hiring manager’s mind, so touch on it occasionally to show you shine in that area.

Putting It All Together

The most important thing to remember is to select skills that are relevant to the position you are interviewing for and, more important than that, skills that your company puts a tremendous amount of value in.

Once you get your skills straightened out, you should make sure that the rest of your resume is congruent with the skills you just selected, namely, that your experience shows that you both used those skills in a work environment and developed the skill with on-the-job tasks.

The overall dynamism and competitiveness of the contemporary working environment means that workers from all sectors are confronted with a diverse set of challenges, which need to be overcome in order to succeed. In order to delineate precisely what skills are necessary for success in this demanding context, of course, a preliminary step would be attempt to specify what type of job environment is in question, thereby clarifying with some detail the skills required for a particular occupation. However, from a contrasting perspective, in so far as one considers that there is a certain resemblance between all forms of labor, which in fact allows these diverse forms of work to be grouped together as such, there seem to be some skills which transcend contexts and particular work environments, meaning that such skills are valuable irregardless of the situation at hand. Following this latter viewpoint on the issue of job skills, it would seem that the following skills are invaluable irrespective of context: a strong work ethic, excellent organizational talents, and a positive attitude.

In terms of a strong work ethic, this skill seems self-explanatory. However, many individuals approach their job merely looking to cash the proverbial paycheck. In this case, no extraneous effort is placed into the tasks at hand and merely “getting by” is deemed a sufficient goal. Certainly, this approach can explain a good deal of workers’ attitudes. However, when considering the issue of job skills necessary to success, it is clear that such an approach is untenable: a strong work ethic demonstrates a dedication to successfully accomplishing goals. Without immersing oneself in one’s labor, there is no way to climb above the normalcy of mediocrity. Dedication to the task is akin to successfully accomplishing a task.

However, a mere gung-ho attitude is not sufficient in itself. A dedication through strong work ethic is certainly a skill, in so far as it means that the worker will put the time in to realize the goal: but the successful realization of the goal also needs a broader method and therefore organizational skills. Organizational skills means understanding how to tackle a work-place problem, taking in a diverse number of factors that may influence the working environment, such as time constraints, understanding deadlines, and managing materials and also working with co-workers. In this sense, organizational skills become critical in the sense that they represent a channeling and focusing of the initial energies that are provided through the commitment to a strong work ethic. It can therefore be said that organizational skills represents a more intellectual dimension in contrast to the more emotional and even physical skill of a strong work ethic.

Yet even with these two skills in place, at times work will overwhelm the individual and goals may not be accomplished. In this regard, surviving in the work place requires an additional commitment: a commitment to a positive attitude. Such a positive attitude is not only a general emotive stance towards the work place, in the sense that the worker has a positive relationship to his or her labors, but also possesses an intellectual dimension: bearing a positive attitude allows one to put potential problems in the workplace in their proper perspective and context. Thus, when something inevitably goes wrong, having a positive attitude helps to minimize any over-reactions to the problem; at the same time, it provides one with an opportunity to re-group and take another strategy to the task at hand.

Hence, the skills of a strong work ethic, organizational abilities, and general positive attitude all contribute to success in the workplace, since each of these skills can be said to address particular aspects of the employment experience. Furthermore, these can all be classified as skills, since they are not innate to every human being. Identifying the importance of these skills and the reasons why they are important, while also continuing to develop them, can become crucial foundational stones on the road to success.

Have you ever sent an email no one seemed to understand that ended up derailing the timeline for an entire project? Or written a report that you then had to explain verbally to everyone after they read it?

Even if you’re not in a job where writing is a core component of your professional duties, you probably use your writing skills every day to communicate with others through text (whether it’s over email or Slack, in a monthly or quarterly report, in the form of a project update, or otherwise). In fact, strong written communication skills are one of the top attributes employers look for , regardless of the job they’re hiring to fill.

Here’s why—plus what some common writing skills for work are, how to improve them, and how to show them off in your next job search.

Why are writing skills important?

If you’re in a writing-centric or writing-heavy role—for example, marketing—you might already be aware of how your writing skills help you daily. But even if you aren’t in one of these jobs, “Writing is an essential skill in the workplace, especially today with more and more people working remotely,” says Muse career coach Jennifer Smith , founder of Flourish Careers . In an increasingly online world, “There’s less face-to-face interaction and more written interaction.”

Strong writing skills help you to communicate with others without having to schedule a meeting or phone call. They ensure readers understand the key points of what you’re trying to get across, come away with the ideas and impression you want them to, and, in many cases, take action to do whatever you’re hoping they’ll do. Writing is something others can refer back to at any point—as opposed to verbal communication, which might have to be repeated and requires both parties to be available at the same time.

When you’ll use writing skills

Here are common scenarios when you’ll use writing skills during your job—even if you don’t think your role has anything to do with writing.

• Emailing: “Most professionals have to craft business emails ,” says Muse career coach Tara Goodfellow , owner of Athena Consultants . Emails might be how you update your team on a project, request information from a colleague, or follow up on a meeting with clear next steps. And in some instances, an email is how you make your first impression on a new person.
• Communicating with coworkers: Whether it’s via email, Slack, another messaging app, or Google Doc, you’ll want your coworkers to know what you’re talking about without adding yet another meeting to the calendar.
• Documenting procedures: Written records can be particularly helpful when you’re trying to standardize how your team or company handles recurring tasks or training new coworkers to take these on. “Clearly writing and documenting new procedures can allow for future consistency and improved quality control,” Smith says, even if you’re not available to meet with and explain the processes to each new person taking them on.
• Crafting sales pitches: For example, if you’re an account executive reaching out to a prospect via email or LinkedIn, “A well-written sales pitch to a critical client will increase your credibility and help you land the new client,” Smith says.
• Reporting on the results and/or progress of your work

Before you write a single word, you need to do your research about the topic you’re writing on. Gathering information that’s up-to-date and accurate is a key part of writing, and the process may help you figure out what content to include. Depending on what you’re writing, research may involve learning about your target customer—whether it’s an overall target market or individual company—evaluating sources for strength and credibility, talking to experts, reviewing and analyzing data, or talking to other members of your team.

Planning and/or outlining

An outline is a pared-down sketch of what points or topics the document you’re working on will cover and how you plan to structure the information, which can give you a roadmap to follow as you write. Creating and following an outline ensures you’re incorporating all the important information in the right order and not being repetitive or straying too far from your point. It’s often easier to get outside input on an outline than to write an entire report or similar only to find out key information was missing. Outlining skills can also be used to map out a non-writing project ahead of time or plan a process, which can be especially helpful if you’re delegating to or collaborating with others.

Grammar and clarity

Grammar is the set of rules governing language usage. It’s what guides everyone to communicate in a similar way and, as a result, understand each other better. There are many rules of English grammar, and you should definitely know the basic ones. But unless you’re a writer or editor , knowing the obscure little quirks of grammar usually isn’t necessary. What is necessary is knowing how to construct a clear, easy-to-read, and understandable sentence so you can communicate in writing.

Revising and editing

Editing is the process of correcting and changing a piece of your own or someone else’s writing to strengthen it. You can revise or edit by making significant changes to the structure, organization, or content of a piece. Or you might proofread a piece of writing, checking for any misspellings, grammar mistakes, or typos. In other cases, you might be tweaking sentences or paragraphs to flow better or reflect a certain tone. Strong editing skills can be useful in a wide range of professional situations—from looking over a report or presentation for a teammate to spotting an error in an email you’re about to send the entire company.

Communication skills

Even if writing isn’t a core part of your job, you’ll likely use it to communicate in the workplace. This might mean composing an email , messaging someone on Slack or Teams, giving feedback, creating a meeting agenda , or giving an update on a project. 9 tips to improve your writing skills

“Good writing can help you stand out and get ahead,” Smith says. So how do you improve your writing skills? Here are a few tips:

1. Brush up on grammar basics.

If you’re already feeling your eyes glaze over, don’t worry. Unless you’re a writer, editor, or similar, you don’t need to know whether it’s who or whom or when to use an em dash vs. a semicolon (and let’s be real—editors don’t always know all these things). But you should know the basics: how to write in complete sentences rather than fragments or run-ons; how to use quotation marks and commas in typical scenarios; and when to use there, they’re, or their, to name a few.

There are a number of free resources online you can use to brush up on your grammar skills or answer individual questions, such as Grammar Girl and the content many dictionaries put out on their blogs. Or you might look into paid courses on platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera. You can find plenty of free quizzes (like this one ) to figure out your current level of skill and discover areas for improvement. There are also a number of books you can check out: The Elements of Style by Strunk and White is a classic—but still widely used and, more importantly, short—overview of the most important grammar rules, and Woe Is I by Patricia T. O’Conner is a more modern guide written in a lighter tone.

2. Read (and study) the type of writing you want to improve.

One of the best ways to improve your own writing is to read a lot. Note what writing resonates for you and look at that writing closely to see how it’s put together. Is it using a lot of technical words? Is the tone conversational or more serious? Does the writer use a lot of short sentences, mostly longer sentences, or a mix of both?

Reading any type of text can help you get a sense of the different ways all the elements of writing can combine effectively. But it can be particularly helpful to focus on the same types of writing you want to improve. Reading Shakespeare is great if you enjoy it, but it’s unlikely to improve your emails. If you want to level up your marketing copy, technical reports, or written sales pitches, those are the types of writing you should be studying most closely.

3. Pick the right format for the situation.

You have to quickly update your boss on what you’ve done in the last week. What’s the best way to do it? Are you going to open up a new Google Doc and write a five-page report covering every detail? Probably not. You’re likely going to type up an email with a few short paragraphs or bullet points that hit the key points in a way your boss can read quickly. 

On the other hand, if you’re detailing the findings of weeks of research, that five-page report might be necessary for your immediate supervisor or a teammate who needs to know about your process. But if you’re sharing those results with another department, it might make more sense to convey only the key takeaways or action items in a PowerPoint presentation with a few bullet points or short summary on each slide.

Knowing and choosing the correct format for a given piece of writing—based on your goals and intended audience—will give you the appropriate amount and type of space to share what you need to, and it’ll set your readers’ expectations correctly as well. Going back to the earlier example, if your manager sees a Slack message, they’ll expect that to take at most a few minutes to read, but if you send them a long document, they’ll be prepared to receive a lot of information (and might hold off on reading until they have the time they need to digest it).

4. Outline before you write.

Especially when you’re writing something longer or particularly important, outlining beforehand can lead to a stronger finished project and make the process smoother. The best way to outline will depend on your personal preferences and what you’re writing. 

In most cases, you’ll want to:

• Divide your outline into sections (whether those sections indicate chapters, paragraphs, slides, or anything else) 
• Note what the purpose of each section is. Why is it being included and what question is this section answering for your reader? 
• Sketch out what information needs to go in each section of your piece. 

As you’re outlining, check that the order of your sections makes sense. Would someone need a bit of info or context currently slated for a later section to understand what you’re saying here? Move that info or section up in your outline.

If you have a number of points you’d like to hit but don’t know in what order or how they go together, an outline can be even more helpful. Write out each key point in a way that’s easy to move around—for example, a bulleted list in a Word or Google doc or even individual index cards—and start by grouping similar and related points together. Then, organize these groupings in a way that flows logically. If you’re not yet sure what your key points are, you can do the same exercise with all of the smaller pieces of info you want to include and form your key points once you see how all your information goes together.

5. Be aware of your audience and the appropriate tone for your writing.

To communicate well through writing, it’s important to understand who will be reading and what sort of language is appropriate. Here are a few tips to follow:

• Consider how formal your language should be:  If you’re Slacking a teammate, you might be able to be more relaxed in your tone and word choice than when you’re emailing a client or preparing a presentation for stakeholders. In many professional situations you should skip the emojis and avoid using multiple punctuation marks unless the situation really calls for it. “Rarely is ‘!!!!!!’ needed,” Goodfellow says. And don’t write in all caps unless you actually mean to yell. (If you’re chatting with a coworker about the latest episode of Succession or the newest Netflix true-crime doc, though, feel free to !!! away.)
• Note the knowledge level of your audience as it relates to the topic. “If they are aware of the situation, they [may] not need a great deal of detail,” Goodfellow says. For example, if you’re updating other members of the engineering team on a feature you coded, you can use tech jargon and skip the background, but if you’re writing about the new feature in a blog post for customers, you might need to explain things a bit more thoroughly, choose more common words, and explicitly state why it matters to them.
• Put yourself in your reader’s shoes. Before finishing any piece of writing, take the time to reread it while accounting for the audience’s point of view. “Keep in mind that how you intend the email may not be how it's perceived,” Goodfellow says. Tone is difficult to convey over text, especially humor—and you don’t want to imply an attitude you don’t mean. If you’re responding to an email chain, writing a comment on an ongoing thread, or in any way continuing a conversation, try to mirror the tone of the messages before yours, Goodfellow says.

6. Pay attention to the mechanics of your writing.

Here are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind that will help make almost anything you write easier to read and understand:

• Don’t use complex words when simple words will do. If it looks like you used the thesaurus function every few words, it’s likely to distract your reader or make them lose focus. You’ll also end up with a disjointed tone, and you run the risk of someone not understanding the point you want to get across.
• Vary your sentences. If all your sentences are a similar length or follow the same structure, your writing can become a slog to read. “One common issue I see is every sentence starting with ‘I,’” Goodfellow says. Think: “I want [x]. I need [y]. I'd like [z].” It gets repetitive, and it’s easier for the reader to lose their place if everything looks the same.
• Use specific words and phrasing. Whenever possible, state exactly what you mean rather than using vague words like “things” or phrases like “and so on.” This practice will make your writing stronger and easier to follow.
• Don’t repeat yourself. When writing and speaking, it’s common to say the same thing multiple times in a slightly different way. Repetition can unnecessarily pad your writing and cause people’s attention to waiver.
• Eliminate filler words and filtering language. Words like “just” and “that” are often unneeded to get your point across and weigh down your writing. You should also take a look at any adverbs and adjectives you use to see if a stronger, more specific noun or verb will do the trick. Similarly, filtering language like “I think” or “it seems like” can weaken your message and make you sound less confident. The use of filtering language is especially common for women , who have been socialized to soften their opinions so as not to offend.
• Guide your reader through each of your points. As you move from one topic to the next, transition smoothly. If you spent the last paragraph talking about a project you completed last week and then you jump right to describing an upcoming project without a transition, your reader is likely to get confused. And for every new point, make sure it’s clear to your reader why you’re bringing it up and how it connects to the overall topic.

7. Get feedback on your writing.

If you’re looking to improve your writing skills, getting feedback from others can be extremely helpful. You might not realize you tend to use the wrong form of “your” or that your sentences are way too long. But someone else might. It’s also common for individuals to use the same words and phrases over and over without realizing it. (Full disclosure, my boss/editor has banned me from using the word “additionally.”) Similarly, you might think your writing is clear and to the point, but a reader might feel like there’s key context missing. As you get feedback from multiple people or on multiple pieces of writing, pay attention to any comments or critiques you’ve gotten more than once and focus on these areas first.

Ask a teammate, manager, or someone else whose opinion you trust to look at something you’ve written and ask what would make your writing stronger. (If it’s someone you work with, it might be easiest to ask them for writing feedback on something they have to read anyway). 

Depending on what kind of writing you’re looking to work on, you might also be able to join a writing group or community where people trade writing and critique one another, Smith says. You can find writing workshops (both online and in-person) through universities and other community programs—they often cost money but come with an experienced instructor or facilitator—or you can find (usually free) writing groups online. Meetup.com and professional organizations are great places to start your search.

8. Proofread.

No matter what you’re writing, taking a last look to check for any typos or mistakes can save you a lot of headaches in the long run. Did you contradict yourself somewhere or leave the verb out of a sentence? Read anything you’ve written out loud if possible. Sometimes things look OK on a screen, but when you try to say them, you realize something’s not right. In a similar vein, you might also print out your writing and correct it on paper, Smith says. Often this is enough to see your writing in a different way, making it easier to spot errors. If the writing has higher stakes or the impression it makes on the reader matters a lot, try to get someone else to read it as well, Goodfellow says.

9. Use tech tools as aids—not substitutes.

There are plenty of programs and plug-ins that claim to “fix” your writing, such as WritingProAid, Sapling, Grammarly, and even the spelling and grammar checkers built into word processors. These tools can make it easier to write well, Smith says. But they shouldn’t be your one and only source of truth. Computer programs tend to miss key context that human readers would understand. “Spell-check can help but there are many words that are ‘correct’ but may not be what you intended,” Goodfellow says.

None of these tools should stand in for a thorough proofread. As a professional editor, I use tools like this to call attention to possible errors, but I always look at their suggestions before accepting them and consider whether they’re actually correct or clear. I also look carefully for errors the tools didn’t catch at all. Computer programs can easily miss homophone mix-ups, verb-tense switches, incorrect word choices, and other issues. And sometimes you may need to write in a style these tools aren’t programmed to support. For instance, if you’re writing about investing, they might mark stock tickers and common financial abbreviations as errors.

How to show off your writing skills in a job search

If you’re applying for a writing-heavy job, you may be asked to submit a writing sample along with your application or complete a skills test at some point during the interview process. But you can showcase your writing skills at other stages as well for any kind of job.

On your resume

Unless a specific type of writing skill, such as experience with social media copy or familiarity with a certain style guide, is listed in a job description or is clearly a big value add for a specific role, your writing skills don’t usually belong in your skills section —or at least, that’s not where recruiters and hiring managers will look for them. Instead, they’ll look at the way your resume is written to see these skills in action. Here are some guidelines to follow:

• Use correct and consistent grammar—no randomly switching verb tenses .
• Write clear, concise bullet points , taking care to choose specific words and strong, active verbs .
• Avoid vague or overused words. That means steering clear of contextless buzzwords, such as “passionate” and “synergized,” which might sound flashy but don’t mean anything on their own. And instead of words such as “managed” and “led,” Smith says, aim for interesting and creative—but still clear and specific—words the recruiter hasn’t seen a thousand times that day.

If you’re in a field where writing is a core component of your job, you can also link to writing samples directly from your resume even if you’re not asked for them to further show off your qualifications.

In your cover letter

When writing a cover letter (and you should write a cover letter ), you’ll want to follow all the same advice as when you’re writing a resume. But cover letters give you more room to really show off your writing skills. 

Rather than rattling off lists of qualifications you have, use your cover letter to write succinct but persuasive anecdotes that come together to tell a coherent story about why you’re the right person for the job. Choose past experiences that are relevant to the job you want and support your overall narrative. And make sure your sentences and paragraphs flow in a logical way and it’s always clear why information is being included. 

You can also inject more voice and personality into a cover letter than you can in a resume to give the reader the sense of who you are as a person.

Throughout the interview process

Of course, interviews aren’t often conducted through writing. In fact, unless there’s a good reason for it (such as a disability accommodation for yourself or the interviewer), an all-text interview process may be a red flag for a job scam .

But you’ll still be communicating with your prospective employer via email throughout the process. “Taking the time to craft well-written email responses is a fabulous way to make a solid first impression,” Smith says. “Recruiters and hiring managers will notice a difference between well-thought-out responses vs. rushed comments.”

Remember you’re being evaluated not just for your ability to do a specific job, but for your potential as a teammate. A coworker or direct report who communicates via email in a clear and professional way will make everyone’s work easier in the long run—especially if you’ll be communicating with people outside the company through email—whereas someone who’s hard to understand in writing might seem like a future headache they’ll have to address.

Task 2 Samples

Some people think that parents should teach their children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the best place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that children should be taught by their parents about how to function as useful members of society, while others believe that sending children to educational institutions is the best way for them to study this. Although the latter opinion can be beneficial in some cases, I believe that family upbringing plays a more important role in educating children to be good parts of the community.

Schools can be considered suitable places for children to learn to be good citizens. With standardized educational methods, schools can foster children’s cognitive development so that they are able to contribute to society in the future. For example, Trung Vuong school and Vinschool are well known for having nurtured successful alumni such as Professor Ngo Bao, Professor Nguyen Hung who have devoted their talents to the development of the country. However, these people only represent a small fraction of the total number of students attending schools, and thus sending children to schools cannot be the best method of educating them to be good members of society. 

I believe that parents play a more important role in teaching them how to be good citizens. In Vietnam, the average class size is 20 students, which makes it difficult for educators to provide proper schooling for each student. One to one lessons at home, on the other hand, allow children to progress faster. Furthermore, parents form stronger bonds with their offspring and thus, it is easier for them to shape children’s personalities at an early age. Since the majority of the worldwide population have a diet that includes animal products, these type of food is the one that is normally available at food businesses. Therefore, people with a vegetarian diet have to choose between a limited number of plates or products when buying food or eating out. For example, in many popular restaurants in Colombia, the menu has only a short vegetarian section which includes only two or three plates that are completely vegetarian. However, I believe that those options that are offered are healthier than plates that are sold in large quantities.

Following a vegetarian diet allows the body to work better. This is because science has shown that when our human system digests animal products, such as meat, it has to work harder to process the food that it is not designed to receive. These days the competition for the same job has increased, as more young people apply for it. The main problems this causes are high competition for one job and an increased unemployment rate. The most viable solutions are creating special programs for young people and expanding the job market by introducing special positions for others. 

Having a high number of people applying for the same job creates high competition for one position, among younger and older people. As a result, for one position apply hundreds of people, and only one, mainly young people, is hired. Additionally, this leads to unemployment, as there are not many positions available to people and not everyone finds a job. In Ukraine, for example, every year many people in their forties or fifties file for unemployment insurance, as they were not able to find a job due to the companies prefer hiring younger candidates rather them. 

One way for governments to overcome this difficulty is to create special positions for the elder and senior people, like to be trainers. In such a way, they will not lose their jobs and will be able to pass their knowledge to the younger generations. Another solution is for organizations to introduce more internships or traineeships. Creating such opportunities will assist people in having at least temporary jobs. For example, every year a well-known Ukrainian mobile company Life hires the younger for one year program with a future potential full-time employment, as they want to retain their current employees and provide future job opportunities for younger generations.

Many adolescents buy used clothes because they want to be like famous people. That is to say that they need different outfits for any occasion and that is expensive. That is because they cannot cope with the financial burden of buying new clothes from stores, such as Prada or Gucci. As a result, many youngsters buy second-hand clothes. For example, in the United States, many teenagers buy used Gucci products in order to wear them and be like their idols. 

I think it is a positive development because teenagers who buy used shirts or pants can save money for other useful things, such as a computer or a car. That is to say that, if these adolescents have a computer, they could use it for the school or even to work in computer related jobs. For example, many teenagers can work as a freelancer in many jobs that do not require high skills to do it, such as making presentations or translating works from other language and as a result earn money and save it. 

In conclusion, many adolescents are buying used clothes because they want to be like their idols, and I think it is a positive development because they can use the money they do not spend in useful things.

Therefore, I believe that it is of greater advantage for more people to follow a vegetarian diet.

For example, In India, the sales of those automobile companies are higher where uniforms are mandatory because, in these corporations, people have good relationships with others.

When employees have to wear the same clothes regularly, they feel bored and sometimes, it has a negative impact on their productivity. Furthermore, the obligation to wear a uniform also increases the expenses of organizations. This is to say that in those corporations, where uniforms are mandatory, companies have to allocate some money for new and worn-out uniforms. For instance, the spending of the famous footwear company, Bata, is around 5% more than its rival companies because in this company a uniform is mandatory, and the company allocates some money for uniforms. 

In conclusion, the main advantages of the compulsory uniform are that it brings uniformity among employees and increases companies’ overall sales, and the main disadvantages are boredom among workers and an increase in the expenditure of corporations.

In conclusion, although adolescents tend to be happier because they enjoy support from their families, I believe that adult life brings more joy because of life fulfillment, irrespective of more responsibilities.

Meeting different people from vast cultures and societies provides an education that is impossible to get in a traditional school, college, or a university. Secondly, one can explore and embrace the good qualities of other cultures through traveling. For example, foreigners visiting India are often fascinated by Indian customs and traditions and always try to imitate these valuable traditions.

Even in schools, young children should be educated about health from a young age in order to grow as healthy adults. For example, people in Japan are one of the healthiest people in the world because they teach their students about the importance of health. I therefore believe that this is the best way to maintain and improve health.

Another possible solution is a ban on a detailed description of any serious crimes on television. This will help people keep away from a negative visualisation and their damaging effects on their mental health to make them feel unsafe. For example, recently in India a show called ‘crime patrol’ was prohibited on news channels because it had a negative psychological impact on people after watching it.

In conclusion, previously committed crimes and detailed news on any serious crimes can lead to people feeling less safe. However, this can simply be prevented by putting extra safety measures in place and compelling news channels to stop showing comprehensive details of dangerous crimes.

For example, builders demand their uniforms as a basic element for their protection before starting a construction. 

However, employees can feel uncomfortable in days with high temperatures. On hot days, wearing uniforms can reduce worker’s comfort because they cannot change their clothes to avoid the heat. Another key drawback is that repeating the same clothing can demotivate workers. Employees can feel tired of always looking the same because they cannot choose what they want to wear. For instance, a recent survey showed that 60.3% of people who wear uniforms do not like to wear them, and they would like to make decisions about their outfit at work. 

In conclusion, although having uniforms for staff makes a company looks reliable for its clients and provides safety for its workers, they can feel uncomfortable on hot days and unmotivated due to the fact that they constantly have to wear the same clothing.

This is because, manufacturing processes generate CO2 and other fumes, sewage, and industrial waste which are released to environments and cause air, water and soil pollution. Furthermore, industrial pollution will negatively affect people’s health by precipitating respiratory diseases as well as some types of cancer. For example, Beijing, a big city in China, is facing smog which comes from manufacturing and incomplete combustion of logistic vehicles. This leads to an increase in the number of asthma-exacerbated patients.

To conclude, while prioritisng economic development will result in an increase in employment and a better quality of life, the serious downsides that come with this are environmental pollution and residents’ health issues.

This is because there will be far more new-built factories for supporting the economic expansion. Without ecological concerns, the air will be polluted from carbon dioxide and fumes which are emitted from these factories, and rivers will be polluted by industrial sewage from manufacturing and chemical processes. For example, Beijing, China, is facing a hazardous level of the air pollution caused by fuel burning and chemical reactions from industrial areas. As a clean environment is extremely vital for a human life, I therefore think that the main drawback outweighs its key benefit.

To conclude, although people will earn higher income if the government prioritises the economic sector rather than other sectors, the serious drawback as pollution problems far outweighs the advantage.

This has turned people into making much more friends but has also reduced the depth of those relationships. In my opinion, this is a harmful change due to the fact that it makes human less able to communicate their personal feelings.

Lacking valuable bonds means that they have almost no one to confide during depressive episodes that are inevitable for most humans, and thereby increase the possibility of making unwise decisions. GCSE results day 2024: Everything you need to know including the number grading system

Thousands of students across the country will soon be finding out their GCSE results and thinking about the next steps in their education.   

Here we explain everything you need to know about the big day, from when results day is, to the current 9-1 grading scale, to what your options are if your results aren’t what you’re expecting.  

When is GCSE results day 2024?  

GCSE results day will be taking place on Thursday the 22 August.     

The results will be made available to schools on Wednesday and available to pick up from your school by 8am on Thursday morning.  

Schools will issue their own instructions on how and when to collect your results.   

When did we change to a number grading scale?  

The shift to the numerical grading system was introduced in England in 2017 firstly in English language, English literature, and maths.  

By 2020 all subjects were shifted to number grades. This means anyone with GCSE results from 2017-2020 will have a combination of both letters and numbers.  

The numerical grading system was to signal more challenging GCSEs and to better differentiate between students’ abilities - particularly at higher grades between the A *-C grades. There only used to be 4 grades between A* and C, now with the numerical grading scale there are 6.  

What do the number grades mean?  

The grades are ranked from 1, the lowest, to 9, the highest.  

The grades don’t exactly translate, but the two grading scales meet at three points as illustrated below.  

The bottom of grade 7 is aligned with the bottom of grade A, while the bottom of grade 4 is aligned to the bottom of grade C.    

Meanwhile, the bottom of grade 1 is aligned to the bottom of grade G.  

What to do if your results weren’t what you were expecting?  

If your results weren’t what you were expecting, firstly don’t panic. You have options.  

First things first, speak to your school or college – they could be flexible on entry requirements if you’ve just missed your grades.   

They’ll also be able to give you the best tailored advice on whether re-sitting while studying for your next qualifications is a possibility.   

If you’re really unhappy with your results you can enter to resit all GCSE subjects in summer 2025. You can also take autumn exams in GCSE English language and maths.  

Speak to your sixth form or college to decide when it’s the best time for you to resit a GCSE exam.  

Look for other courses with different grade requirements     

Entry requirements vary depending on the college and course. Ask your school for advice, and call your college or another one in your area to see if there’s a space on a course you’re interested in.    

Consider an apprenticeship    

Apprenticeships combine a practical training job with study too. They’re open to you if you’re 16 or over, living in England, and not in full time education.  

As an apprentice you’ll be a paid employee, have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, and get time set aside for training and study related to your role.

Empowering Youth for a Digital Future: Closing the Digital Divide and Paving the Way for a Thriving Digital Economy

Some young innovators who participated in the UNDP-supported Circular Economy Hackathon where over 100 young bright minds shared ideas on the circular economy. 12 solutions were selected and received cash prizes towards refining their ideas and further support in developing business plans.

This year’s theme for International Youth Day on August 12 “ From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development ,” highlighted the crucial role that young people play in this digital age and how we need to enable their access to the many opportunities available in the digital ecosystem. International Youth Month provided an opportunity to amplify the transformative power of digital technologies to impact lives, solve some of the pressing global challenges, and call for more investments in technology to drive innovation and foster connectivity towards devising solutions to secure a sustainable future.  

With South Africa having one of the highest youth unemployment rates globally, the newly formed Government of National Unity (GNU) has placed the issue of addressing unemployment at the centre of its priorities. According to Statistics South Africa, 45.5% of the youth population is unemployed , which necessitates urgent action and effective strategies to tackle youth unemployment for improved development outcomes. Youth unemployment restricts the earning potential of young people, hampers business growth, threatens social cohesion, and places a strain on public resources.  

The UNDP South Africa “ National Human Development Report 2022: Harnessing the Employability of South Africa’s Youth ” identified the digital economy as a viable hub for job creation and recommended that the country leverages its opportunities by empowering youth for the new world of work. The report also notes the associated socioeconomic challenges that may hamper the digital revolution, particularly around digital literacy, infrastructure, and connectivity. These are challenges that many of UNDP’s South Africa inclusive growth programmes have been focussing on and seeking lasting solutions to.   

Bridging the digital divide by empowering rural youths to participate in the digital economy

UNDP South Africa has been championing various youth-focused interventions to empower young people to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and drive impactful innovations towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include providing digital skills to unemployed youth and entrepreneurs, building ICT infrastructure (erecting public Wi-Fi hotspots and setting up libraries), supporting innovation through innovation challenges/hackathons and providing funding to young innovators, and digitising learning at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.   

Advancing digital skills and access to digital platforms

Since 2022, UNDP has been driving a digital skilling project to empower unemployed youth and entrepreneurs to unlock employment and other income-generation opportunities within the digital economy. Participants in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal were introduced to coding, 3D, and drone technology, gaining competence in these areas and guided towards leveraging 4IR. As a result, most of the participants were provided with internships (some transitioning into lasting jobs) in various companies, while the entrepreneurs were supported with integrating digital technologies into their ventures for improved business outcomes. These efforts have led to 1,194 young people receiving digital skills training, with 719 securing jobs, and 40 entrepreneurs supported. Additionally, nearly 2000 young people accessed digital upskilling through the Future Skills Platform , all contributing to efforts to close the digital divide.  

UNDP launched the “ Automotive Training and Re-Skilling Vulnerable Youth and Women in South Africa ” programme, with a component around digitising learning post-COVID-19. Three TVET colleges—Coastal KZN College, Northlink College, and Tshwane South College—benefited from this initiative, receiving electronic automotive components, training equipment, and ICT infrastructure for their training centres.  Moreover, 64 youths completed an accredited Operator Development and Work Placement Programme, preparing them for entry-level roles as automotive manufacturing operators.  

The project also supported the implementation of two strategic youth empowerment networks: SAYouth Mobi and Yakh’iFuture (Build Your Future). Through SAYouth , 12,230 students registered on the platform, with 694 securing employment or income-generating opportunities. Yakh’iFuture provided TVET college engineering students with the skills and training needed to build electrical devices and systems, equipping them to succeed in South Africa’s growing automotive components manufacturing sector.  

Building ICT infrastructure and expanding connectivity  

To expanding internet penetration in rural areas, UNDP supported women and youth-led Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises SMMEs in rolling out TV White Spaces (TVWS) network technology in rural areas. TVWS uses unused radio frequencies originally set aside for TV broadcasting, offering the advantage of covering large areas and penetrating obstacles like buildings and trees. This makes it ideal for providing affordable internet in hard-to-reach areas. Through this initiative, SMMEs were capacitated to offer affordable digital connectivity via Wi-Fi hotspots at schools, clinics, taxi ranks, digital hubs, and other public facilities across the country. Over 183 public Wi-Fi hotspots have been erected, connecting 273 small businesses, over 2 637 households, and 56 public facilities, ultimately providing access to over 70,000 concurrent internet users daily collectively. Importantly, the beneficiary SMMEs have created 144 job opportunities for local youth and women.  

To scale this work, UNDP set up a computer lab at Olwandle High School in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal. Connected to the TVWS network, this lab is designed and equipped to enhance the teaching and learning experience by aligning the school's curriculum with the demands of the digital age. Learners can now access online video tutorials, download previous question papers in preparation for exams, conduct research, and apply for university admission and other funding opportunities.  

UNDP’s youth empowerment strategy through innovation focuses on equipping young people with digital skills, providing resources, and exposure to opportunities. By fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems, providing access to digital tools and funding, and promoting digital literacy, UNDP empowers youth to become job creators and innovators in the tech-driven economy. Through initiatives like Accelerator Labs, UNDP South Africa’s initiatives have been pivotal in advancing tech entrepreneurship and innovation among young people, laying the foundation for a sustainable future.   

UNDP has empowered youth innovators to participate in the digital economy, particularly in supporting entrepreneurship in the sector, given that small businesses are considered the engine of growth in developing nations such as South Africa. Through various innovation challenges supporting a variety of sectors ranging from water and food security to energy and waste management, youth innovators were provided with technical skills development, business development support, access to prototyping facilities and programmes, access to seed funding and early-stage investment to commercialise their ideas.  

Innovation Challenges, Hackathons and Ideation support 

UNDP empowered university students to develop an advanced 4IR & Internet of Things (IoT) Flood Detection System designed to enhance KwaZulu-Natal's infrastructure resilience. This innovative solution monitors flood levels at electrical substations, alerting technicians via a mobile app and determining when to shut down substations to prevent damage during natural disasters.    

In 2023, UNDP ran an online innovation challenge which focused on the circular economy and reached 93,000 young people nationally. Youth were engaged through a digital platform to submit videos describing their solution, communicate , and access skills training. In addition, over 150 of these youth were supported through a design-thinking hackathon to develop their ideas into prototypes and pilots.  

Sky Vantage, a youth-owned company supported by UNDP, is tackling the issue of e-waste in communities by collecting electronic waste from various locations, such as municipal sites and busy public spaces, and manually disassembling and processing it to extract valuable components. Currently, Sky Vantage is piloting this innovative solution at Vaal University of Technology, with plans to expand to the Tshwane Municipality.  

UNDP proudly supported the creation of Hydro Blü , an innovative Geospatial Data Science and machine learning solution designed to predict groundwater availability at nearly any location on earth. This cutting-edge tool helps hydrogeologists make informed decisions on where to drill boreholes, ensuring that communities with limited access to water can find reliable sources.  

UNDP empowered young people as co-researchers, enabling 77 youth to gather crucial insights from over 10,000 community members in coal mining areas, guiding decisions on the Just Energy Transition.   

During the COVID-19 lockdown, we couldn't access the most vulnerable communities, which resulted in us developing an innovative approach by training local youth to collect data using a mobile application, equipping them with technical skills and valuable knowledge in community engagement, sales, customer service, understanding vulnerability, and gender awareness. As a result, 55 youths quickly mobilised to gather data, distribute emergency relief vouchers, and advocate for COVID-19 safety measures, reaching over 6,800 households in less than three weeks.  

Earlier this year, the launch of the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) marked an exciting milestone in empowering the next generation of innovators, an initiative to foster innovation and tech entrepreneurship among university and college students. The fund aims to solve challenges in the innovation ecosystem such as a lack of skilled student tech entrepreneurs who can develop and commercialise competitive innovative products, a lack of entrepreneurial support and networks at universities and colleges, and limited exposure to opportunities, mentoring and coaching.    

The transformative impact of UNDP South Africa's digital youth initiatives is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships. By collaborating with our partners, including the Department of Higher Education and Training, Toyota South Africa Motors’ Toyota Manufacturing Academy (TMA), Department of Science and Innovation, Al Baraka Bank, Water Research Commission, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), City of Tshwane, Innovate Durban, Makerspace Foundation, and Business Process Enabling South Africa (BPESA), we have been able to impact change and can mobilise more resources necessary to empower young people and foster their active participation in the digital economy.
