Study Level

PhD Law at Durham University

[email protected]

Our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) postgraduate degree is a research-based programme of study centred on completing a satisfactory thesis of up to 100,000 words on an approved topic in the field of Law . The programme is normally three years in length, or six years for part-time students. This degree is internationally recognised as a sign of research excellence. Many of our former PhD students have gone on to have successful careers in academia, the legal profession, the civil service, and in non-governmental organisations.

Durham Law School graduates are highly sought after by leading national and international law firms. To promote career opportunities, these law firms regularly visit Durham University or offer online events exclusively for Durham students.

Durham Law School offers students online access to a comprehensive Employability Handbook that includes detailed timelines on the steps involved from starting as a first-year Law undergraduate to becoming a Solicitor or Barrister , and guidance on preparing for interviews and assessment days.

Students have access to the Durham University Careers & Enterprise Centre which supports students in developing their career planning and employability skills.  It is a free service and is available to students throughout the duration of their academic studies.

The Durham University Law Society , supported by Durham Law School , organises the Peer Mentorship Scheme . This Scheme provides students who take up that option with a student mentor in another year who can offer support and advice in relation to all of the opportunities available at Durham Law School , including societies and module choices.  This opportunity is available to first year Law undergraduates who will have the opportunity to be connected with a peer mentor who is a year two or year three law undergraduate.

In addition, the Durham University Law Society runs a mentoring scheme which connects second and third year law school students with Durham alumni who can offer support and advice in connection with career and other development.

Durham Law School's academic staff produce world-leading research creating significant legal impact. The School's scholars advise parliamentarians and policy-makers around the world, called to give evidence in Parliament, and have their research cited and quoted by the courts and international bodies.

Durham Law School is proud of its dynamic, diverse and high-achieving community of postgraduate researchers. We currently have over 70 excellent research students - from around the UK, mainland Europe and all corners of the globe - carrying out work under the supervision of our academic staff, many of whom are global leaders in their field.

Research students are integrated fully into the life of the Law School . All research students become a member of at least one research centre or group. These groups include the Human Rights Centre , Durham European Law Institute , Law & Global Justice and Gender & Law at Durham . A full list of our centres and groups are available online. Research students participate fully in the research events of these centres and groups, and opportunities exist for them to play an active role in their organisation by becoming Deputy Conveners .

To facilitate our students’ engagement with external activities and conferences while studying at Durham University , the School provides a competitive postgraduate funding scheme, which in the past year provided £16k to support research students in attending research events in the UK, France, the US, Switzerland, Ireland, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Turkiye and Nigeria.

In addition to the formal supervision process, our research students have opportunities for intellectual stimulation and development through the Law School’s and University Graduate School’s Training Programmes . These offer insights into research methods, qualitative and quantitative databases and time management. The courses also help students manage their research projects, plan their future careers and provide an excellent opportunity to meet students from across the many subject disciplines studied at Durham University .

Postgraduate Programme and Module Handbook 2022-2023 (archived)

Welcome to the Postgraduate Handbook. The Postgraduate Handbook includes the programme frameworks for all of Durham University's postgraduate degree programmes with taught components, so that you can check: which modules are compulsory on your programme; whether you have any optional choices; and if you do have optional choices, how many you have and the extent of the choice open to you. To view the framework for your degree programme, use the Programme Lists facility below.

Programme regulations should be read in conjunction with the Core Regulations for Postgraduate Programmes .

The Postgraduate Module Handbook also contains descriptions of all the postgraduate modules offered by the University, including the content of each module and how it will be taught and assessed. For guidance on using the handbook, including a glossary and FAQs, please see our Programme & Module Handbook pages in sharepoint.

Please note: this is an archived handbook for a previous year. For the current year use the links at the top of the page.

Full-time | 2025

Durham Law School is a world leader in legal education and research. Our top-ranking LLB forms the first stage of the professional training you need to qualify as a solicitor or a barrister.

This cutting-edge, research-led degree provides an in-depth understanding of the law of England and Wales, as well as legal research and practice. It offers a variety of optional modules which allows individual specialisation across a range of pathways in public and private law, including international law.

The Law School is home to a number of leading research centres and groups, and all teaching staff are actively involved in research. This research feeds into the curriculum to create a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment which is in step with developments in the real world.

Academic expertise is supported by a range of first-class learning facilities. The moot court, dedicated workrooms and pro bono room allow you to immerse yourself in a law-focused environment. And outside of structured learning there are ten different law-related student societies which offer plenty of opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities.

You can also apply to add an international dimension to your LLB with a year abroad in one of our overseas partner institutions. Places on these pathways are in high demand and if you are chosen your studies will extend from three years to four.

The rigorous academic curriculum, first-class facilities and supportive learning environment provide the legal and academic skills you will need to progress to a career in the legal sector, as well as equipping you with the transferable skills that are in demand across a wider range of sectors including business, local and national government and academia.

Year 1 Core modules: Tort Law provides a general understanding of the structure of the law of tort in England and Wales. You will examine the nature of the major torts and the place of tort law within the legal system.

Contract Law offers an understanding of the nature and functions of the law of contract in England and Wales. You will critically examine key elements of the law of contract and begin to develop an understanding of the common law in action.

EU Constitutional Law gives a overall understanding of basic institutions, concepts and principles relating to the European Union. This module covers elements such as the historical, political and economic foundations of the EU, institutions of the EC, the legal structure of the EC and judicial protection of ‘community rights’.

UK Constitutional Law provides an understanding of the basic institutions, concepts and principles relating to the constitution of the UK. This module includes elements such as the nature of the UK Constitution, The Rule of Law, parliamentary sovereignty, and the separation of powers.

The Individual and the State provides a general understanding of the basic institutions, concepts and principles relating to the relationship between the individual and the State. You will study aspects of The European Convention on Human Rights, The Human Rights Act 1998, and judicial review of administrative action.

Introduction to English Law and Legal Method gives a hands-on grounding in legal research, analysis, writing and IT skills. It seeks to establish critical analytical and transferable skills essential in your legal studies and beyond. It introduces you to the English legal system and the diverse forms legal analysis can take.

Assessment methods

We use an array of assessment methods including essays, oral presentations and written examinations completed throughout the year.

You will also complete a 12,000-word dissertation, which makes up one-third of your final-year marks.

This is the percentage of applicants to this course who received an offer last year, through Ucas.

This is what the university has told Ucas about the course. Use it to get a quick idea about what makes it unique compared to similar courses, elsewhere.

Course location and department:

Teaching excellence framework (tef):.

We've received this information from the Department for Education, via Ucas. This is how the university as a whole has been rated for its quality of teaching: gold silver or bronze. Note, not all universities have taken part in the TEF.

This information comes from the National Student Survey, an annual student survey of final-year students. You can use this to see how satisfied students studying this subject area at this university, are (not the individual course).

This is the percentage of final-year students at this university who were "definitely" or "mostly" satisfied with their course. We've analysed this figure against other universities so you can see whether this is high, medium or low.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

Graduate field commentary:

The Higher Education Careers Services Unit have provided some further context for all graduates in this subject area, including details that numbers alone might not show

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?

The Uni Guide and The Student Room are both part of The Student Room Group.

What motivated you to become a Graduate Student Ambassador?

Coming to Harvard has always been a dream of mine. I have had a great experience with my colleagues here and wanted to share my knowledge with other first generation applicants. Additionally, as someone who decided to switch careers years after being in the workforce, I hope to answer any questions for others hoping to career pivot.

What are you looking forward to most as an inaugural student ambassador?

I am most looking forward to meeting new students from across the world and assisting them with their approach to graduate school and answering questions they may have.

What advice would you give students interested in HKS?

The best advice I have is start your application early so that you can review your essays ahead of time. Your essays are an opportunity to show who you are outside of your résumé/CV. It should express a distinct narrative that is emotive and engaging.

  • A personal statement for postgraduate;

Our successful careers weeks programme returns for its third year

  • Job & research opportunities
  • Partnerships & Collaboration
  • Student news
  • Support Services

durham phd law deadline

Our careers weeks and fairs span a range of sectors, providing our students and graduates with a whole host of opportunities to gain advice and information on different career pathways.

Attendees can also register to meet individual employers and professionals, and learn about work experience openings.

Last year’s careers weeks and fairs programme was a resounding success, with 81% of students indicating they felt that their attendance had a positive impact on their career planning.

This term’s events will focus on key graduate recruitment sectors, including Law, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), and Banking, Finance and Consulting. The fairs and employer-led sessions are a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about different professions, sectors and live opportunities that are open this term.

Quiet half hour during fairs

A new introduction to this year’s careers fairs will be a quiet half hour in the final 30 minutes from 3.30 - 4pm. This quieter time is for those who prefer a more relaxed environment, and ensures all students can benefit from the fairs. We kindly ask all attending students to respect this dedicated period by allowing others the space to enjoy the fair at their own pace.

A range of careers within specific sectors

While our careers weeks and fairs are divided into themes, employers from the sectors on offer aren’t just looking for students with degrees in those areas. They value a wide range of skills and experiences from other spheres.

STEM employers often have roles in management, consulting, and business operations that don’t require a technical degree. Similarly, our Law careers week and fair is for students interested in converting to Law after their degree, as well as Law students looking to meet firms and find out more about legal careers, vacation schemes, or training contracts.

We encourage our students to keep their options open and take time to explore a spectrum of sectors. By attending events and fairs, students can gain valuable insights into various industries and get information and advice to support applications and career ideas.

Further resources and support

Each of the careers weeks is supported by online resources on a dedicated SharePoint site for students. Further resources are also provided on our CareersConnect platform, which includes information on employer profiles, live vacancies, careers fact sheets and skill development tips, as well as advice on CV writing, applying for jobs and how to book an appointment to chat to one of our careers advisors.
