🏆 10 best thesis generators, ⭐ thesis statement maker: the benefits, 🔗 references, 🔧 thesis generator: what is it.

Sometimes it can be challenging to come up with a topic, research question, or a thesis statement for your paper. An excellent solution is to use online topic makers, problem statement generators, and thesis topic generators, such as ours! Our free online generator will help you create the perfect thesis statement! Follow the steps below to get thesis statements relating to your topic:

  • Introduce your topic. It can also be the title of your paper (e.g., the benefits of online education).
  • State the main idea about this topic. It is the specific point of view that you will discuss in your paper (e.g., online learning is beneficial)
  • Make an argument supporting your point of view. It must be a strong and valid argument. Don't claim something that you can't back with facts (e.g., online learning is flexible)
  • Make another argument supporting your point of view (e.g., online learning is affordable).
  • Make an argument against your point of view. Make sure you don't just dismiss it, but acknowledge its validity (e.g., online learning is not always taken seriously)
  • Decide on the topic of your paper.
  • Think about the main idea that you will express in your paper. It will also be the conclusion.
  • Choose arguments that can support your point of view. Also, think of at least one counterargument. It will help you discuss your topic better.
  • Enter this information into respective fields. Use short sentences. Do not use punctuation or capital letters.
  • Click on the "Generate Thesis" button to get samples.
  • Choose the sample you like best!

📍 Why Make a Thesis Statement?

You might have already heard about theses and thesis statements. Well, the main difference is: a thesis is the key point or argument of your assignment. And the thesis statement is this point expressed in one sentence.

Here’s one crucial thing you should always keep in mind when you write this sentence: it should meet the professor’s requirements.

There are two types of thesis statements:

  • Direct. It states the exact reasons for your paper. For example, "I do not support vegan lifestyle because animals do not have feelings, this lifestyle is too expensive, and a vegan diet is not healthy." Such a thesis sentence would tell the reader what each body paragraph or section is going to be about.
  • Indirect. Unlike the direct thesis statement, it does not state clear arguments. Here’s the sample: "I do not support vegan lifestyle for three reasons." The fact “I do not support vegan lifestyle” is the topic, and "three reasons" represent an indirect thesis statement. The assignment will contain these three reasons.

Most kinds of academic papers require a thesis statement, which can also be considered as your answer to the research question.

Now that you've learned the basics let's see what can help you to create an excellent thesis statement for anything: from history research to a critique paper!

📝 Essay Thesis Statement

You will probably write many essays as a high school or college student. Writing an essay is quite easy: it doesn't require any serious research on your part, and the resulting text is usually short. That's why you choose a narrow thesis statement that you can talk about in 4-5 paragraphs.

Your choice of a thesis statement depends on what type of essay you're writing. Here are some examples:

In an expository essay , you explain the topic logically, using your analytical skills. This type of essay relies only on facts, without any reference to the writer's personal opinion. The topic statement is the most critical part of an expository essay. It should be short and manageable so that you can describe it in just a few paragraphs. As you can see from the definition, it also should be based on facts and not on the writer's position. This category includes compare and contrast essays, definition essays , and others:

e.g., While online education is not always taken seriously, it is beneficial because of its flexibility and affordability.

On the contrary, argumentative essays are centered on the writer's personal opinion. This type of essay is also called persuasive because your aim is to persuade people that your idea is right. The thesis statement should reflect this:

e.g., Vegan lifestyle should not be promoted because it's expensive and not healthy.

Note: it's better not to use the word "I," because it may appear as too subjective. Remember: a strong thesis statement means an excellent essay!

✍️ Research Paper Thesis Statement

Unlike essays, research papers require more information, and they are lengthier than essays. That's why a research paper thesis statement should be slightly broader. This way, you make sure that you have a lot to discuss and can demonstrate your more profound knowledge on the topic.

Research paper thesis statements can be simple or more complex, depending on the purpose of your paper. Simple thesis statements can be formulated with the help of the outlines:

Something is true because of these reasons .

The US Constitution is not outdated because it's an integral part of the country's identity.

Despite these counterarguments , something is true.

e.g., Despite not being outdated, the US Constitution needs many amendments to keep up with the changing times.

You can make more complex thesis statements by combining several arguments:

e.g., The US Constitution is not outdated, because it's a part of the country's identity; still, some amendments need to be made.

Remember: it is essential to stay on topic! Avoid including unnecessary and random words into your statement. Our online thesis creator can help you in writing a statement directly connected with your theme.

Our thesis statement generator can help writing a thesis for your research. Create a short, catchy thesis statement, and you are one step closer to completing a perfect research paper!

📜 Dissertation Thesis Statement

Writing a master's thesis or a Ph.D. dissertation is not the same as writing a simple research paper. These types of academic papers are very lengthy. They require extensive analysis of information, as well as your ideas and original research.

Besides, you only have limited time for writing a dissertation, so you'll have to work on it systematically.

That's why it's better to come up with a thesis statement as early as possible . It will help you always stay on topic and not to waste your time on irrelevant information.

A dissertation can have an even broader thesis statement because of how lengthy your work should be. Make sure it's something you can study extensively and from different points of view:

e.g., The use of memory techniques at school can boost children's abilities and revolutionize modern teaching.

Don't forget to include a statement showing why your dissertation is interesting and relevant!

🙊 Thesis Statement For a Speech

Similarly, the thesis statement for a speech should be catchy and exciting . If you include it in the introduction, you will provide your audience with a sense of direction and make it easier to concentrate. The audience will know what to expect of your speech, and they will pay more attention.

Speech, unlike a research paper, includes only the most relevant information . If your speech is based on a paper, use your thesis statement to decide what to leave out. Remember that everything you say should be connected to your thesis statement! This way, you'll make your speech consistent, informative, and engaging.

Another useful tip is to rehearse your speech several times before deciding that it's finished. You may need to make some corrections or even rephrase the thesis statement. Take your time and make sure you do your best!

Now, we will concentrate on your thesis writing. We’ve prepared six tips that would help you to master your thesis statement regardless of the paper type you were assigned to:

  • Formulate your topic. Here’s the secret: the good topic makes half of the success when you write a paper. It defines your research area, the degree of your involvement, and, accordingly, how good will the result be at the end. So what is the topic of an essay? Basically, it’s a phrase that defines the subject of your assignment. Don’t make it too broad or too specific.
  • Determine the key idea. It will help you get an understanding of your essay subject. Think about things you are trying to state or prove. For example, you may write down one main idea; consider a specific point of view that you’re going to research; state some facts and reasons you will use in your assignment, or express your opinion about the issue.
  • Choose the central argument to support your thesis. Make a list of arguments you would use in your essay. This simple task has at least two benefits. First, you will get a clear understanding on what you’re going to write. It will wipe out the writer’s block. Second, gathering arguments for the topic will help you create an outline for your assignment.
  • Generate other arguments to support the thesis. Free thesis generators suggest you proceed with a few arguments that support your topic idea. Don’t forget to prepare some logical evidence!
  • Come up with a counterargument to the main idea. You might find this exercise a bit hard, but still, if you're dreaming of writing an excellent paper, think of another side of the argument. To complete this task, you should conduct preliminary research to find another standpoint and evidence behind it.
  • Provide your thesis statement as early as possible in your paper. If you're writing a short paper, put your thesis in the introductory paragraph. For more extended essays, it is acceptable to write it in the second paragraph. And avoid phrases like, "The point of my essay is…"
  • Make your thesis statement specific. Remember to keep it short, clear, and specific. Check if there are two broad statements. If so, think about settling on one single idea and then proceed with further development. Avoid making it too broad. Your paper won’t be successful if you write three pages on things that do not disclose the topic and are too generic.

Original thesis:

There are serious objections to abortions.

Revised thesis:

Because of the high risk of breast cancer or subsequent childbearing, there should be broadly implemented the informed consent practice that certifies that women are advised of such risks prior to having an abortion.

When writing your thesis, you use words that your audience will understand:

  • Avoid technical language unless you’re writing a technical report.
  • Forget about jargon.
  • Avoid vague words: “exciting,” “interesting,” “usual,” “difficult,” etc.
  • Avoid simply announcing the topic. Share your specific “angle” and show why your point on the issue matter.
  • Do not make judgments that oversimplify complex topics.
  • If you use judgment call in your thesis, don’t forget to specify and justify your reasoning.
  • Don't just report facts. Instead, share your personal thoughts and ideas on the issue.
  • Explain why your point matters. When you’re writing a thesis, imagine that your readers ask you a simple question: “So what?” Instead of writing something general, like "There are a lot of pros and cons of behaviorism", tell your readers why you think the behaviorism theory is better than cognitivist theory.
  • Avoid quotes in your thesis statement. Instead of citing someone, use your own words in the thesis. It will help you to grab the reader's attention and gain credibility. And the last advice: change your thesis as you write the essay. Revise it as your paper develops to get the perfect statement. Now it's time to apply this knowledge and create your own thesis! We believe this advice and tools will be useful in your essay writing!

Your topic is the essential idea of your paper. It is usually a few words or a phrase that summarizes the subject of your paper. For your thesis statement, try to make your topic as specific as possible.

What is your argument regarding your subject? How do you intend to convince the reader of your perspective?

Write your reason as a clear statement. Be sure that you can support this reason with logical facts and evidence.

A strong thesis statement recognizes the existence of a counterargument. Incorporate a perspective that contrasts with your own by detailing what someone with an opposing view might assert about your topic.

Step 1 : Fill out the fields to the best of your ability. You can include as little or as much detail as you would like.

Step 2 : Submit your answers and your words should appear above after a few seconds. Fine tune your answers and submit again if needed.

Step 3 : When you are happy with the results, copy and paste your words wherever you want! Be sure to proofread for accuracy and edit to make them your own.

How to Use the Thesis Statement Generator Tool

Understanding the form layout.

Before we begin crafting a compelling thesis statement, let’s familiarize ourselves with the form provided by the Thesis Statement Generator tool. This tool is designed to guide you through the process of creating a strong thesis statement for your paper. It has several fields:

  • What is your topic?
  • State your main idea about this topic
  • Give 3 reasons that support your main idea
  • Counterargument

Now, let’s explore each field with a fresh example, ensuring your thesis is both robust and convincing.

Crafting Your Thesis

Identifying your topic.

In the “What is your topic?” field, you’ll pinpoint the central theme of your essay. Specificity is key. For a new example, instead of “education,” you might delve into “the benefits of bilingual education in primary schools.”

Articulating Your Main Idea

For the next field, “State your main idea about this topic,” you’ll declare your principal argument. Let’s say your stance is that “Bilingual education in primary schools fosters cognitive flexibility and cultural awareness.”

Providing Supporting Reasons

Moving on to “Give 3 reasons that support your main idea,” here is where you provide the pillars of your argument. For our educational theme, you could argue that bilingual education “enhances problem-solving skills,” “improves multitasking abilities,” and “prepares students for a globalized workforce.”

Acknowledging Counterarguments

In the “Counterargument” field, consider potential criticisms of your argument. Presenting an opposing view shows depth in your analysis. A counterargument might be “bilingual education may lead to initial language learning challenges for students.”

Best Practices

  • Be Precise : Aim for detail while maintaining brevity, so your thesis statement remains clear and effective.
  • Employ Assertive Language : Use strong and affirmative language to convey your argument confidently.
  • Prepare with Research : Arm yourself with research to effortlessly supply robust reasons and anticipate counterarguments.

After filling in each field, the “Write Thesis Statement” button will craft your thesis. Use this as a blueprint for your paper, fine-tuning it as needed to capture your voice and argument. With regular use, this tool can enhance your writing process, making thesis creation a seamless and thought-provoking task.

Developing a Research Thesis

A research thesis has most of the same  thesis characteristics as a thesis for a non-research essay. The difference lies in the fact that you will be gathering information and evidence from appropriate, valid sources to support your perspective on a topic or stand on an issue. Yet although your sources provide information that informs your thesis, the thesis ideas should be your own, particular to your personal way of thinking about and analyzing a topic.

The thesis focuses your ideas and information for the research paper. Remember that word "focus." Student writers often make the mistake of forgetting the focus and making the research thesis far too broad in order to include too much research. Yet depth more than breadth is the hallmark of a sophisticated research paper.

Create a working thesis for the research paper by specifying and ordering your categories of information. For example, the following theses offer the writers' main arguments and focus their research by specifying and ordering the reasons for their stance:

  • Competency-based management is practical, logical, and accessible to managers and workers.
  • Workforce training in basic skills is now necessary because of the lower reading and writing levels of the workforce, the fact that a person now entering the workforce will change jobs many times, the shift in jobs from the manufacturing to the service sectors, and the more comprehensive, abstract nature of those service jobs.

As you can see, a research thesis is your proposed answer to your research question, which you finalize only after completing the research. (It's okay to modify and revise the working thesis as you research more about the topic or issue.)

Developing a good working thesis, just like developing a good research question (researchable: neither too broad nor too narrow) is an important research skill.

What is a thesis statement?

Your thesis is the point of your paper—the point you are demonstrating or proving. it can be stated in a sentence, the thesis sentence , that sums up the purpose of your essay. nearly all college writing sets out to persuade the reader of an idea: that idea is the thesis you are presenting… what do you need to explain to make your point understandable what arguments might be used against your point.

Academic Support Presents: The Thesis Statement

Academic Support Presents: The Thesis Statement By Mildred VanBergen, Director of Academic Support

A thesis statement is a specific claim or main idea that an essay argues, supports, or explains.  Simply put, it is the main idea of an essay or writing assignment. The SUNY Empire State College Thesis Generator is a resource designed to help students begin drafting a working thesis statement for their writing assignment. This tool can help students create a working thesis statement for a persuasive, research, or comparative writing assignment. Each of these generators will ask students to answer specific questions about their topic. After all the answers are submitted, the generator will present a draft thesis statement that the student can then revise to create their own statement.

In addition, for more help on learning how to write a thesis statement, please check out Creating a Thesis Statement under Tools for Success on the Academic Support portal. This short, open educational resource explains the purpose of a thesis statement, the elements of a strong thesis statement, and how a thesis statement relates to the rest of the essay.

Finally, please take advantage of our free online workshop titled: “Thesis Statements That Get the Job Done” being offered on May 5 at 12 p.m., and again on July 13 at 7:15 p.m. To learn more about these workshops and other academic support resources, please go to: www.esc.edu/academicsupport .

Tips for Successful Distance Learning

  • Workshops Calendar
  • Assignment Calculator
  • Study Skills
  • Peer Tutoring
  • Thesis Generator

New to distance learning? No problem!  Empire State University's faculty and staff are committed to providing productive and effective distant learning experiences during this time of transition. Below are some helpful resources and tips to help get started with this flexible, student-centered approach to course completion.

Distance Learning is a mode of learning that includes using technology such as

  • Brightspace, the university online learning system
  • Online meeting tools such as MS Teams or Zoom

While the interaction with your instructor may be different, students have been using these tools for years, and you too can be successful with distance learning! As you transition to distance learning, below are several practical recommendations to help you succeed.

Communicate with your Instructor

Whether you have always used some form of distance learning or this is new to you, your instructor is the best source of information for specific course details. If your course is changing from in-person to distance learning, it is natural to have questions. When your instructor contacts you with the distance learning course plan, do not be afraid to ask questions to better understand the new format. In addition, if you later have difficulty with the access, course materials, or format, be sure to ask your instructor for guidance. Faculty understand this is a time of transition and are ready to assist you or refer you to an appropriate resource.

Explore and Familiarize Yourself with any Technology that is new to You

As you move to distance learning, you may be asked to use a technology that is new to you. To prepare, try the tool well before your required meeting or assignment due date. For example, if your instructor provides an online meeting link, you may need to download a quick app to use the tool. By logging in early, you will have plenty of time to complete this step before the meeting begins. In addition, if you have trouble using the tool, you can contact the university’s IT Service Desk for help. They have many resources to share and can often walk you through the steps to help you with any difficulty.

Identify a Study Space

Identifying a consistent study space in your home, office, or local business will help you transition from worker, parent, or spouse to a student who needs to focus. A study space does not need to be a separate room. Oftentimes, a simple table and chair work quite well. Completing your college work in the same place each time creates a focused thinking habit that allows you to more quickly settle into the work that needs to be done. It also signals to other people in your home that you may need some quiet time to work.

Keep Your Class Schedule, Even When you are Home

If you were attending an in person study group or regularly met with an instructor at a location, continue to do your college work at those same times. You have already established a routine, and one of the best things you can do as you transition to distance learning is to keep that routine. In addition, your instructor may wish to use this time to meet by MS Teams or other online meeting tools, so it is important to keep that time free from other personal obligations.

Use a Calendar to Record Assignment Due Dates

If you have not started using a calendar, now is a very important time to do so. With distance learning, time may appear to “fly by” as the term goes forward. Use a calendar to create weekly lists of assignment due dates and tasks you may need to do to complete those assignments. For more specific help with breaking up writing assignments into manageable steps, use the Empire State University Assignment Calculator .

Communicate with your Family and Friends

Changes in school and event schedules may create a new level of activity in your home. It is completely natural to be a bit uncertain as these changes are underway. One important step is to talk with your family and friends regarding the specific impact on you. Explain that you need a quiet, uninterrupted space for some time each week to continue to meet your college goals. By providing a start and stop time to your family and friends, they will know how to support you and will also feel assured that you will be available at other times during the day.

Connect with a SUNY Empire Learning Coach (professional tutor)

Moving from one style of learning to another does require an adjustment in your study approach. Your instructors are aware of this and will work with you during the transition. However, Empire State University Learning Coaches (professional tutors) are available to support you as well. They can help with navigating new technology, specific course content, and general writing and math skills. Learning Coaches regularly work with students online and at a distance so you can schedule an appointment from home or work. For more information and to schedule an appointment go to Tutoring.

Use a Pear Deck Tutor (24/7 Online Tutoring)

SUNY Empire provides free tutoring with Pear Deck Tutor (formerly TutorMe), a 24/7 supplemental service.  Pear Deck Tutor offers tutoring in a broad range of subject areas at hours when SUNY Empire State learning coaches are not available. Your weekly limit resets every Monday at 2:59AM EST.  Access to Pear Deck Tutor is on a desktop, laptop, or tablet.  For more information and access to Pear Deck Tutor go to Tutoring.

Create Family/Friend Reading Hours

With some children also moving to distance learning, there is an opportunity to create a family study space. For example, consider creating a “family reading hour” where all devices are put away, turned off, or silenced. Identify a goal for everyone including yourself. When you are finished, have everyone, including you, share a little bit about what they read. “Teaching” others helps with memory and understanding of reading material. When the hour is complete, do a shared fun activity (play a game, etc.) to reward everyone for meeting their reading goal. If there are no children in your home, this also works well with friends, partners, or spouses. In addition, you can even do this at a distance by connecting online or over the phone with others to share your reading.

Review Academic Support Resources on MySUNYEmpire

The academic support team is here to support you during this transition to distance learning. In addition to meeting with a tutor, there are also many resources that can be accessed 24/7 on the MySUNYEmpire Academic Support page. For example, there are videos on writing papers, using graphs, and more. In addition, there are interactive tools such as the  Thesis Generator and  Assignment Calculator to support writing assignments.  If you don’t see what you need, simply email [email protected] for assistance.

Connect with Your Primary Mentor

Throughout these transitions, your Primary Mentor remains an excellent resource for you. If you are unsure of next steps, are experiencing significant difficulty in completing your courses, or have questions regarding enrollment, please do contact your Primary Mentor.  If you are unable to connect with your Primary Mentor, email [email protected] , and a member of our Student Success team will assist you.

  • Sample Papers
  • Citation Management Tools
  • Annotated Bibliographies

Which citation tool is right for you depends on many factors. If you will be writing only a handful of short papers, the simpler tools may suffice. If you expect to write several lengthier papers, a capstone project or thesis, you will benefit from the more complex tools. This comparison chart may help you choose from the two more complex tools, Mendeley and Zotero . ZoteroBib is a newer and easy-to-use option that still has lots of functionality and flexibility.

The citation tools below are listed in decreasing order of complexity. Mendeley and Zotero are similar and equally full featured, while ZoteroBib has slightly fewer bells and whistles, but is an easier-to-learn and use option. Citation Builder is a very simple tool for creating a single citation at a time.

Journal of Materials Chemistry A

Carbon nanofibers/ti3c2tx/carboxymethyl cellulose composite-based highly sensitive, reversible, directionally controllable humidity actuator and generator via continuous track-inspired self-assembly.

Harnessing water energy sources presents a compelling avenue for sustainable development. However, the development of efficient materials capable of converting moisture into mechanical motion (energy) remains a significant challenge. Herein, we draw inspiration from the agile locomotion of snakes and their distinctive tracking capabilities to engineer a novel snake-like robot/actuator. This innovative design integrates carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), MXene, and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) into an anisotropic periodic structure, achieving through a streamlined one-step self-assembly procedure. The resultant CNFs/MXene/CMC film-based robot/actuator exhibits remarkable sensitivity to humidity fluctuations, boasting the ability to achieve bending angles exceeding 360° at a fast-bending speed of 254.5°/s. Moreover, it demonstrates fast recovery within mere seconds under high relative humidity conditions. This as-prepared actuator holds great potential for various applications, ranging from responsive smart switches to dynamic actuating robots and efficient moisture-electric generators, presenting sustainable solutions for future developments.
