  1. A Swedish national twin study of lifetime major depression

Method: Lifetime major depression was assessed at personal interview by modified DSM-IV criteria in 42,161 twins, including 15,493 complete pairs, from the national Swedish Twin Registry. Twin models were evaluated by using the program Mx.

  2. research method

Overall, Kendler et al concluded that the heritability of depression is moderate and estimated it to be 38% which was in line with previous research estimating 37%. This study suggests both that the heritability of major depression is higher in women than in men and that some genetic risk factors for major depression are sex-specific.

  3. A Swedish National Twin Study of Lifetime Major Depression

These results imply the exist-ence of genes that have different impacts on the risk for major depression in men and women. For example, genes might exist that would alter the risk for depression in women in response to the variable hormonal environment KENDLER, GATZ, GARDNER, ET AL. of the menstrual cycle and pregnancy (27, 28).

  4. A Swedish National Twin Study of Lifetime Major Depression

OBJECTIVE: Substantial evidence supports the heritability of lifetime major depression. Less clear is whether genetic influences in major depression are more important in women than in men and whether genetic risk factors are the same in the two sexes. It is not known whether genetic effects on major depression are constant across historical cohorts. METHOD: Lifetime major depression was ...

  6. Symptoms of major depression: Their stability, familiality, and

Methods We examine, in twins from a population-based registry, similarity in symptom endorsement in individuals meeting criteria for last-year MD at separate interview waves and in concordant twin pairs. Among individuals with MD, we explore the impact of genetic-temperamental and child adversity risk factors on individual reported symptoms.

  7. Personality and major depression: a Swedish longitudinal ...

Objective: To clarify the magnitude and nature of the association between neuroticism and extroversion and the risk for MD. Design: Longitudinal population-based twin cohort. Setting: General community. Participants: A total of 20 692 members of same-sex twin pairs from the population-based Swedish Twin Registry who completed a self-report ...

  13. Twin Studies: Experimental or Correlational?

This leaves me with the obvious conclusion that when asked about "one research method used to study genes and behaviour," students would be able to use DZ-MZ twin studies and identify this method as either being quasi-experimental or correlational, because either is a defensible position.

One of the central questions in the study of psychopathology is why certain people develop psychiatric and substance use disorders while others--even those with similar family backgrounds and life experiences--do not. This groundbreaking volume synthesizes the results of a landmark research program to shed new light on the ways genetic and environmental influences weave together to create risk ...

  16. The nature of psychiatric disorders

Abstract A foundational question for the discipline of psychiatry is the nature of psychiatric disorders. What kinds of things are they? In this paper, I review and critique three major relevant theories: realism, pragmatism and constructivism. Realism assumes that the content of science is real and independent of human activities. I distinguish two "flavors" of realism: chemistry-based ...

The learning environment is fundamental to higher education and has a profound impact on student outcomes. As conceptualized by Gruppen et al.
