PhD Geoinformatics

Banner

Doctoral programmes concentrate on developing the capacity for independent scientific work and spans 6 to 8 semesters. Admission requirement is the successful completion of a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in the same or comparable subject from a university, a ‘Fachhochschule’ (University of Applied Sciences) or a comparable degree in an equivalent or related field from an accredited Austrian or foreign institute of higher education.

PhD candidates are typically employed at the University of Salzburg through departmentally led projects, or are hosted at the department during supervision of work on students ‘own projects, frequently funded from international advanced training grants. It is possible to work towards a PhD while being employed externally in a related field, although such part-time PhD requires a long-term effort and carefully managed research.

Geoinformatics and Geographic Information Science have evolved into a particular focus area at the University of Salzburg, managed through the Department of Geoinformatics. Research topics from the wide field of Geoinformatics are addressed through an “ education through research ” approach. The doctoral curriculum is focused on independently developing a thesis, parallel to completing a limited set of compulsory classes.

Currently research topics are centred around the eight research groups of the department:

  •   CDL gEOhum
  • EO-Analytics
  • Risk, Hazard & Climate
  • Open Spatial Science
  • Landscape Lab
  •   Geo-Social Analytics Lab
  •   Mobility Lab
  •   Spatial Simulation

Programme description

The PhD programme Geoscience is based on three research foci of the faculty. These are:

  • Coupling processes between the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere
  • Dynamics and transport processes of the lithosphere
  • Coupled processes in Georeservoirs

By participating in a number of externally funded projects, doctoral candidates learn to perform independent scientific work. Through active participation in the scientific affairs of the faculty or the Geoscience Centre, students acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond a curricular programme of study.

Georg-August-University School of Science (GAUSS)

The doctoral programme in Geoscience is captured under the umbrella of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). The GAUSS is responsible for PhD students and supervisors from the five faculties of Biology and Psychology, Chemistry, Geoscience and Geography, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics.

Working on research projects towards their doctorate the students are supported in the development of scientific networks in an international environment on the Göttingen Campus and beyond. The granting of doctoral degrees is however autonomous to each faculty.

The doctoral candidate must successfully complete examination prerequisites in a scope totalling at least 20 ECTS credits (C)

The focus of the PhD programme lies on the individual research of the PhD students, which is accompanied by a variety of courses: 20 ECTS are gained by completing courses, one compulsory course on theory and methods is included, and three elective courses are part of the programme (e.g., on reflecting research, scientific communication, scientific teaching, key competencies, etc.).Students are free to decide on the specific courses they will complete during each semester.

Stay abroad possible, but not obligatory.

Short Description

Students on the Master’s degree programme in Geodesy and Geoinformatics, which follows on from the Bachelor’s degree programme, expand on their knowledge in the following areas:

  • Advanced Geodesy subjects,
  • Advanced Geoinformatics subjects,
  • Project seminar,
  • Compulsory module on the project seminar,
  • Compulsory elective module “Geodesy”,
  • Compulsory elective module “Geoinformatics”,
  • Studium Generale.

Most of the compulsory part, consisting of the advanced subjects of Geodesy and Geoinformatics during the first semester, is offered in English. In the compulsory elective modules “Geodesy” and “Geoinformatics”, students can choose from several courses. In addition, the “Studium Generale” enables students to attend courses offered in other degree programmes. The degree programme concludes with a Master’s thesis.

  • Further information for students on the website of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science

Course Content

  • Cartography
  • Engineering surveying
  • Geodetic data analysis
  • Geographic information systems
  • Land and real estate management
  • Photogrammetry
  • Physical geodesy
  • Remote sensing
  • Satellite geodesy

The Master’s degree programme takes four semesters and builds on content from the Bachelor’s degree programme. Students take advanced subjects in which they expand on the knowledge gained during the Bachelor’s degree programme. In the compulsory elective area, students have the opportunity to choose between various subject areas and to specialise accordingly. The optional area also enables them to attend courses offered in other degree programmes. As is the case at the Bachelor’s stage, students are assessed continually.

The fourth semester of the Master’s degree programme is set aside for the completion of a Master’s thesis within six months. Students who have passed all of the examinations and successfully completed the Master’s thesis are awarded the Master’s degree.

Graduates are conferred the title Master of Science (MSc).

The Master’s degree programme requires that students produce a great deal more independent scientific work than is the case at the Bachelor’s stage. In this way, graduates are prepared for undertaking future research and development tasks in industry or research institutions.

  • Foundations: Students should understand the fundamentals of geodesy and geoinformatics; a sound knowledge of basic science, mathematics and programming is a prerequisite.
  • Research: Students should also be interested in subject-specific and research-oriented interrelations. The ideal students are also open to new lines of scientific enquiry, creative, open to criticism and responsible-minded.

Graduates of the degree programme in Geodesy and Geoinformatics have good prospects for embarking on a wide range of exciting, varied professional tasks. In the free economy, for example, graduates may find employment

  • as self-employed, publicly appointed surveyors
  • with providers of geodetic and photogrammetric systems of measurement and analysis
  • with manufacturers of positioning and navigation systems
  • with surveying and robotics software providers
  • with GIS service providers
  • in industrial production control and quality control
  • in the construction and raw materials industries

M.Sc. Geoinformatics and Spatial Data Science

We are excited to announce that our master’s program has been reaccredited by the German Accreditation Council, and has been modified in the process.   While the goals and content have not changed fundamentally, the program has undergone some restructuring to provide more flexibility and has seen some thematic adjustment to be even more strongly embedded in the current research activities at ifgi. To account for this, the program will now be called “Geoinformatics and Spatial Data Science”. Starting in summer 2021, all incoming students will be enrolled in the new study program.
