CPC Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must be an AAPC member, which costs $190 ($125 for students). Once you have joined AAPC, you can use your account to register for the exam.

The exam itself costs $349 for one attempt or $449 for two. If you paid to take the test twice but you pass the exam on the first take, you do not get a refund of the money spent on the second attempt.

When you register, you will have the option to choose in-person testing or remote testing (LPR).

There are similarities between these two methods when it comes to the day of the exam. Both formats require a current, valid, government-issued form of identification. Both ways also allow you to bring a basic manual calculator and handwritten notes specific to daily coding activities. Additionally, you are allowed three reference books

  • The AMA Professional edition of the CPT
  • Your choice of the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines with highlighting, underlining, and brief notations needed for day-to-day coding
  • Your choice of HCPCS Level II

Keep in mind that the exam questions are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, and you might be disadvantaged in using prior publications.

There are similarities in the disallowed items as well. You are not allowed to bring electronic devices with an on/off switch, devices capable of capturing and storing images, study guides, Procedural Coding Expert , CPT Plus! – PMIC , CPT Insider’s View – AMA , or the ICD-10-CM Easy Coder.

In-person Testing

On the day of your exam, you should arrive 15-30 minutes early at your exam location. You must also bring your photo ID, two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, a manual calculator, and your coding books and references. Keep your belongings in your car or at home; you are not allowed to bring anything not approved into the testing center.

After you show your ID to the testing center administrator, you will be directed to your testing station. You will complete a familiarization tutorial there, and your exam begins when you are finished with the tutorial.

You can take breaks during the exam period, but you will not regain the time you lose on your break.

Live Remote Proctoring

You will need to log on to the testing environment 5-10 minutes before your appointment time. By logging on early, you can troubleshoot issues like connecting to the testing platform, microphone issues, lagging internet, etc.

When your proctor signs on, present your government-issued photo ID. Then, rotate your camera around your space for the proctor’s approval. When your area is approved, replace your webcam, ensuring your face, fingers, keyboard, and keyboard area are always in the frame. Once the webcam is back in place, you cannot move out of its view.

A bottle of water, two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, a sheet of blank paper, approved reference materials, and a manual calculator are all allowed to be on your desk.

How the CPC Exam is Scored

You need to answer 70 questions correctly to pass the exam. The correct answers are worth 1 point each, and they are combined to calculate your final score. Your results are released to your AAPC account seven to ten days after you take the exam. If you do not receive your test results after ten days, contact AAPC for guidance.

If you did not pass the exam, you can register to retake the exam. If you paid for the two-test bundle, there is no additional fee. If you did not pay for the two-test bundle, you would pay the $349 test registration fee.

You can take the exam as often as needed, but you will pay the full registration fee each time.

How to Study for the CPC Exam

How to study effectively.

Your success on CPC test day depends not only on how many hours you put into preparing but also on whether you prepared the right way. It’s good to check along the way to see whether your studying is paying off. One of the most effective ways to do this is by taking CPC practice tests to evaluate your progress. Practice tests are useful because they show exactly where you need to improve. Every time you take a free CPC exam practice test, pay special attention to these three groups of questions:

  • The questions you got wrong
  • The ones you had to guess on, even if you guessed right
  • The ones you found difficult or slow to work through

This will show you exactly what your weak areas are and where you need to devote more study time. Ask yourself why each of these questions gave you trouble. Was it because you didn’t understand the material? Was it because you didn’t remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions on this type of question to build speed and confidence? Dig into those questions and figure out how you can strengthen your weak areas as you go back to review the material.

Answer Explanations

Additionally, many CPC practice tests have a section explaining the answer choices. It can be tempting to read the explanation and think that you now have a good understanding of the concept. However, an explanation likely only covers part of the question’s broader context. Even if the explanation makes sense, go back and investigate every concept related to the question until you’re positive you have a thorough understanding.

Comprehend Each Topic

As you go along, keep in mind that the CPC practice test is just that: practice. Memorizing these questions and answers will not be very helpful on the actual test because it is unlikely to have any of the same exact questions. If you only know the right answers to the sample questions, you won’t be prepared for the real thing. Study the concepts until you understand them fully, and then you’ll be able to answer any question that shows up on the test.

Strategy for CPC Practice

When you’re ready to start taking practice tests, follow this strategy:

  • Remove Limitations. Take the first test with no time constraints and with your notes and CPC study guide handy. Take your time and focus on applying the strategies you’ve learned.
  • Time Yourself. Take the second practice test “open book” as well, but set a timer and practice pacing yourself to finish in time.
  • Simulate Test Day. Take any other practice tests as if it were test day. Set a timer and put away your study materials. Sit at a table or desk in a quiet room, imagine yourself at the testing center, and answer questions as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Keep Practicing. Keep taking practice tests on a regular basis until you run out of practice tests or it’s time for the actual test. Your mind will be ready for the schedule and stress of test day, and you’ll be able to focus on recalling the material you’ve learned.

How long is the CPC exam?

Why do I need to take a Case Study Assessment? The Case Study Assessment Test is a crucial component of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification for several reasons. Firstly, it assesses drivers’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, ensuring they can make informed decisions on the road. Secondly, it promotes ongoing learning and adaptation to changes within the transportation industry, enhancing drivers’ competency and professionalism. Lastly, the test standardises evaluation criteria, ensuring all CPC holders meet consistent standards of excellence, thereby enhancing public trust and safety. In essence, the Case Study Assessment Test plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity of the profession and safeguarding road users by ensuring drivers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to operate safely and responsibly.

ABOUT THE DRIVER CPC  CASE STUDY ASSESSMENT

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Case Study Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to test drivers’ ability to apply their knowledge and expertise in real-world scenarios. Through a series of carefully crafted case studies, drivers are presented with challenging situations that they may encounter during their professional driving careers. These case studies cover a wide range of topics, including road safety, vehicle maintenance, driver health and well-being, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. By assessing how drivers analyse, prioritise, and respond to these scenarios, the Case Study Assessment provides valuable insights into their practical skills, decision-making abilities, and overall readiness to operate safely and effectively on the road.

Moreover, the Case Study Assessment serves as a dynamic learning experience for drivers, offering opportunities to deepen their understanding of industry standards, best practices, and emerging issues. By engaging with realistic case studies, drivers are encouraged to reflect on their own practices, identify areas for improvement, and stay abreast of developments within the transportation sector. The test itself is made up of 50 questions presented in groups of 6-8 questions per scenario. The test will contain six different scenarios.

Background information

The scenario often begins with background information, setting the context for the situation. This may include details about the driver’s route, the type of vehicle being operated, weather conditions, traffic conditions, and any relevant logistical considerations.

Problem or challenge

The Questions may presents a specific problem or challenge that the driver must address. This could involve issues such as vehicle breakdowns, traffic accidents, adverse weather conditions, road closures, or compliance with regulations.

Decision points

The scenario typically includes decision points where the driver must make choices about how to respond to the situation. These decisions may involve prioritising safety, managing time constraints, communicating with relevant parties, or complying with legal requirements.

Consequences

The scenario outlines the potential consequences of different courses of action taken by the driver. This could include implications for safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and the driver’s professional reputation.

Have a question?

What is the difference between cpb medical billing course and the cpc preparation course.

The  CPC Preparation course  teaches physician office coding, such as how to assign the proper diagnosis and procedure codes from operative reports and patient charts. This course also helps to prepare you for the CPC certification exam. The  CPB Medical Billing  course emphasizes billing and only lightly touches on coding, and will prepare you for the CPB certification exam. This course teaches medical billing and reimbursement issues, such as how to take the codes that have already been assigned by the coder and process a claim form, and how to work with 3rd party payers to make sure the claim is processed correctly. It is important that a coder understands billing issues as it helps to decrease claim denials and increase reimbursement. An understanding of billing will also expand a coder’s career opportunities.

May I use education completed prior to obtaining my certification?

Credit will not be awarded for educational activities completed prior to certification.

Does taking a classroom course qualify for one year experience when applying to take the certification exam?

Completing an 80 hour or more classroom course will waive one year experience. A letter or certificate of completion indicating hours completed must be submitted to the AAPC to verify course completion.

Does the online course qualify for one year experience towards the Apprentice removal when applying to take the CPC or COC certification exam?

Completion of either the CPC or COC Preparation online courses will waive 80-hours of coding education which waives one year work experience towards the A removal. The student does not need to submit proof of course completion, AAPC will verify this experience as met once the course is completed.

I would like to become certified as a medical coder. What are my options?

AAPC offers training courses for CPC, COC, and CIC certification preparation. The CPC Prep course teaches physician office coding and helps to prepare a student for the CPC certification exam. The COC Prep course teaches coding for an outpatient hospital/facility setting and helps to prepare a student for the COC certification exam. The CIC Prep course teaches coding for an inpatient hospital/facility setting and helps to prepare a student for the CIC certification exam. These are self-study courses in which students work at their own pace, from home, to complete each course within a 4-month timeframe or less. For students who prefer to take a classroom based course, many AAPC certified instructors teach AAPC curriculum throughout the US.

The CPB Exam

The AAPC has a number of preparation materials for the Certified Professional Coding (CPC) exam. These are available through the AAPC’s website , but they’re fairly expensive.

You’ll learn everything you need to pass the CPC exam in a coding course at a university or community college. You should only purchase the AAPC’s training materials if you’re very far out of practice.

You should, however, consider taking the AAPC’s CPC practice exams. We’ll cover these in a little bit.

Prep Strategies

Since the CPC exam covers so many topics, it’s easy to get overwhelmed in the preparation stages. Here are a couple ways of to cope with this large, intimidating exam.

During the exam, you’ll spend the most time with the CPT manual . While there are some questions on ICD-10-CM codes and HCPCS , there are far more questions that relate to the CPT code set, so it’s good to focus your study efforts there. Know the manual back to front, and be comfortable navigating it and using its numerous appendices.

Most people take the exam only after they’ve been working in coding for a little while (to be certified, the CPC requires a passing score and two years of professional experience, or the educational equivalent). If you’ve amassed that experience, you should be relatively familiar with medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. Still, it’s a very good idea to brush up with this through flash cards or review courses.

There will be questions on the exam that explicitly reference medical or anatomical terminology (questions like, “What kind of joint is this?”), but having a strong medical vocabulary will help you in deciphering other questions as well.

Once you’ve studied up, be sure to take advantage of as many practice exams as you can. Treat these exams like real tests: study extensively for them, time yourself as you take them, and then note which questions, and more importantly what type of questions , you regularly get wrong. On your first test, did you struggle with the Anesthesia codes? Go back over that section. Were you sloppy with your ICD-10-CM codes? Review the ICD-10-CM manual. A number of private companies have practice CPC exams, but the AAPC’s practice exams are probably your best bet.

Don’t treat practice exams as formalities or wastes of time. Many practice exams can be easier than the actual exam, but you should still take them seriously. You should try and score at least an 80% on a practice exam before you take the real CPC exam.

Taking the Test

When you take the CPC exam, you’re allowed to bring in each of the code manuals (the ICD, CPT, and HCPCS manuals). You’re allowed to have notes in the margins of these manuals, but these notes can’t contain any test-specific information. You are also not allowed to tape anything into these manuals.

It’s a good idea to mark the important or frequently used sections of your code manuals. The CPT manual, for instance, comes with a number of tabs you can place in the book to mark certain important places. Use these to mark off where code sections begin (like the Surgery or Medicine sections in the CPT manual), and where to find certain appendices.

When you’re taking the CPC exam, you’ll be asked to perform though you were coding at your regular coding job, so set up your manual in the way that makes the most sense for you.

Also be aware that each manual has loads of helpful information beyond the codes. The CPT manual has a number of diagrams of the human body, including illustrations of the ocular system and adnexa, the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system and much more. Mark these pages and refer to them during the test if you’re stumped on a question pertaining to anatomical terminology.

Time Management

When you’re taking a test like the CPC exam, which is almost six hours long and consists of 150 questions, it’s a good idea to break things down to make them more manageable. Separate the questions into blocks of time, and work on one block of questions for a fixed amount of time before moving on to the next set.

For example, you can divide the CPC exam into five groups of 30 questions. Take one hour for every thirty questions. Or you could try and take on 10 questions every 20 minutes. As soon as your designated block of time is up, skip to the next block of questions. That is, if you’ve divided the test into five, hour-long blocks of 30 questions, and you are on question 25 after the first hour elapses, just skip ahead to question 31. If you finish a block of questions early, go back and fill in questions you skipped.

In a test as long as the CPC, it’s important to keep your momentum as you take the test. You don’t want to spend too much time on any one questions. Make it your goal to read and, if possible, answer every question on the test.

It’s a good idea to bring a timer to the exam. This can be a kitchen timer or a watch. Just make sure you don’t have a distracting alarm set on it, and you should be fine. (Your proctor won’t let you use your cell phone, for obvious reasons).

Know Your Goals

In order to pass the CPC exam, you need to get a 70% or better on the test. Always keep that in mind when you’re taking the test. The long, multi-part questions that might have you look up three, four, or five codes are worth the same as the general knowledge questions. If you’re stuck on a question, don’t be afraid to skip it and come back to it later.

Another good way of managing your goals and your time is to remember that your objective in the test is to pick the best available answer. This test is not an exact duplication of what you’ll see in everyday coding. These are hypothetical situations that may be shortened or simplified for space, so you’ll waste precious time getting lost in the details of each questions. Pick the best possible answer and move on.

Remember as you take the test that you can get 45 questions wrong. Don’t waste a lot of time on a question that’s totally stumping you. Instead, move on and try and regain your momentum with easier, less time-intensive questions. If you’ve got extra time, go back to the more difficult questions after you’ve completed the easier questions.

Learn What to Study for the AAPC CPC Examination

In order to ensure that medical services of all kinds can be properly classified, the medical profession has developed a comprehensive codification system for the many diseases and conditions for which people seek treatment. This complex system, which has been evolving for well over a century, is currently known as the ICD-10. In an attempt to be as precise as possible, the ICD-10 contains codes for all common and uncommon diseases and medical conditions.

While medical coders are not expected to memorize the approximately 68,000 codes found in the ICD-10, they are expected to understand the system and most importantly, how it applies to medical billing practices. In short, medical coders interpret physicians’ notes and “translate” them into recognized medical and billing codes. Notably, these codes, rather than physicians’ notes, ultimately determine what medical procedures will be reimbursed. While the ICD-10 plays a key role in medical coders’ work, they are also expected to be familiar with two other manuals: CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) and HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) Level II.

Structure of the AAPC CPC Examination

The AAPC CPC (American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coder) exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 5 hours and 40 minutes to complete the exam. Unlike many other certification exams, the CPC exam is an open book exam. In fact, test takers must bring copies of the ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS manuals to the exam.

The exam consists of 17 different content areas and each content area consists of eight to ten questions. In what follows, we break down each content area. We begin, by providing some general tips on how to prepare for this unique and challenging certification exam.

Two certified professional coders work at a computer in a medical setting.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

The AAPC CPC covers many topics. As a result, it is important to have a clear plan as you prepare for the exam. Among other things be certain to:

  • Familiarize yourself with how to access information in all three manuals (the ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS). You’re not being tested on your ability to memorize thousands of codes but rather on your ability to locate these codes in an accurate and expedient manner.
  • Bring all three manuals to the test—if you don’t, you’re bound to fail!
  • You are permitted to bookmark frequently used sections of the manuals, so do so as you prepare for the exam. You are also permitted to make marginal notes on your manual copies.
  • Since you won’t need a perfect score to pass, if a question is particularly long and complex, skip it and move on to the next question. Aim to answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, because you’ll need 70% to pass the actual exam.

Content Area 1: 10,000 Series CPT

Expect ten questions on the subject of surgical procedures performed on the integumentary system. By definition, the integumentary system is an organ that protects the body from damage; skin, nails and hair are all part of this system. On the exam, you may also come across questions concerned with cysts. You should understand the system’s function, parts and connection to disease.

Content Area 2: 20,000 Series CPT

Be prepared to respond to at least ten questions on the topic of surgical procedures performed on the musculoskeletal system, including those parts of the system located in the head, neck, back, spine, abdomen, shoulder, arm, hand, fingers, pelvis, hip, leg foot and toes.

Content Area 3: 30,000 Series CPT

There will also be a total of ten questions concerned with surgical procedures carried out on the following four systems:

  • Respiratory system (e.g., nose, larynx and lungs)
  • Cardiovascular system (e.g., heart, arteries and veins)
  • Hemic and lymphatic systems (e.g., spleen and lymph nodes and channels)
  • Mediastinum and diaphragm

Content Area 4: 40,000 Series CPT

Ten questions will focus on surgical procedures performed on the digestive system, which includes lips, mouth, palate, salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, intestines, appendix, rectum, anus, liver, biliary tract, pancreas, abdomen, peritoneum, and omentum.

Content Area 5: 50,000 Series CPT

Also, expect to encounter ten questions concerned with surgical procedures carried out on the following four systems and situations:

  • Urinary system (e.g., kidneys, balder and urethra)
  • Male reproductive system (e.g., penis, testis, scrotum and spermatic cord)
  • Female reproductive system (e.g., vulva, vagina and uterus)
  • Maternity and delivery
  • Endocrine system (e.g., thyroid gland, pancreas, and adrenal glands)

Content Area 6: 60,000 Series CPT

Be prepared to respond to ten questions pertaining to surgical procedures performed on the nervous system (e.g., brain, spine and extracranial and peripheral nerves).

Content Area 7: Evaluation and Management

The questions grouped under “evaluation and management” focus on the types of services provided in special departments and/or under special conditions. In this section, expect to find questions that test your knowledge of the following topics:

  • Office/Other Outpatient
  • Hospital Observation
  • Hospital Inpatient
  • Consultations
  • Emergency Department
  • Critical Care
  • Nursing Facility
  • Domiciliary and Rest Homes
  • Home Services
  • Prolonged Services
  • Case Management
  • Care Plan Oversight
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Non-Face-to-Face Services
  • Special E/M
  • Newborn Care
  • Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care and Intensive Care
  • Complex Chronic Care Coordination
  • Transitional Care Management

Content Area 8: Anesthesia

Anesthesia, one of the most expensive parts of medicine, is a distinct content area on the AAPC CPC. Be prepared to respond to questions on reporting, qualifying circumstances, physical status modifiers, and anesthesia for surgical, diagnostic and obstetric services.

Content Area 9: Radiology

There will be ten questions on radiology, including specific questions on diagnostic radiology and ultrasounds, mammography, bone and joint studies, oncology and nuclear medicine broadly defined.

Content Area 10: Laboratory Pathology

Another key content area concerns laboratory pathology; on this section of the exam, be prepared to respond to questions on any of the following topics:

  • Organ and Disease Panels
  • Drug Testing
  • Therapeutic Drug Assays
  • Evocation Testing
  • Molecular Pathology
  • Hematology and Coagulation
  • Transfusions
  • Microbiology
  • Anatomic Pathology
  • Cytopathology
  • Cytogenetic Studies
  • Surgical Pathology
  • In vivo and Reproductive

Content Area 11: Medicine

The test will also present ten questions on topics in medicine pertaining to any of the following specific knowledge areas:

  • Immunizations
  • Biofeedback
  • Gastroenterology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Cardiovascular
  • Noninvasive Vascular Studies
  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Central Nervous System Assessments
  • Health and Behavior Assessments
  • Therapeutic and Diagnostic Administration
  • Chemotherapy Administration
  • Photodynamic Therapy
  • Dermatology
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Medical Nutrition
  • Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment
  • Chiropractic Manipulative Treatment
  • Patient Education and Training
  • Non-Face-to-Face Nonphysician Services
  • Moderate Sedation

Content Area 12: Medical Terminology

Expect eight questions on medical terminology pertaining to systems of the human body (e.g., be prepared to respond to questions about parts and functions of the circulatory system and parts and functions of the skeletal system).

Content Area 13: Anatomy

Prepare for eight questions on anatomy in relation to all systems in the human body.

Content Area 14: ICD-10-CM/Diagnosis

Ten questions will focus on ICD-10’s official guidelines for coding and reporting and on diagnosis questions; notably, diagnosis questions may also appear elsewhere on the exam.

Content Area 15: HCPCS Level II

Five questions will focus on modifiers (two-digit codes that modify another service or procedure), supplies, medications and professional services for Medicare patients.

Content Area 16: Coding Guidelines

Six questions will focus on the ICD-10’s official guidelines for coding and reporting and on CPT coding guidelines and notes. Once again, this means you should know as much as possible about both of these manuals.

Content Area 17: Compliance and Regulatory

Finally, five questions will focus on compliance and regulations. As a result, be prepared to answer questions on at the following subjects:

  • Services covered under Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D
  • HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
  • NCCI (National Correct Coding Initiative) Edits
  • NCD/LCD (National Coverage Determinations/Local Coverage Determinations)
  • ABNs (Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage)
  • RVUs (Relative Value Units), which are part of Medicaid’s reimbursement formula for physicians
  • How to apply coding to payment policies
  • How to identify and report fraud and abuse

You should plan to study for the AAPC CPC exam for at least two months. The more you know without having to utilize the books during the exam, the better. You’ll ensure that you finish all of the questions in the allotted time frame to achieve the highest possible score.
