6 Tips for Designing More Engaging Presentations
With the help of these tips, you’ll be able to make attractive slideshows that engage your students.
1. Visualize Concepts with Images and Graphics
Add relevant images and graphics to the slideshows to enhance understanding and capture students’ attention. Visuals help to break the monotony of text-heavy slides and create a more engaging learning experience. Use diagrams, charts, and infographics to simplify complex concepts and aid comprehension.
2. Keep the Text Concise and Readable
Avoid overwhelming students with excessive text on slides. Keep your content concise and to the point, using short phrases or bullet points. Choose the perfect font size and style to ensure readability from a distance. Remember, your slides should complement your presentation, not replace them.
3. Utilize Multimedia Elements
Embed videos, audio clips, or interactive elements to make your presentation dynamic and interactive. Incorporate relevant multimedia content that reinforces the subject matter or provides real-life examples. This helps cater to different learning styles and keeps students engaged throughout the presentation.
4. Encourage Student Interaction
Design slides that encourage student participation. Include discussion questions, prompts, or activities to prompt reflection and foster engagement. Allow students to contribute their ideas or answer questions during the presentation. This interactive approach promotes active learning and keeps students invested in the topic.
5. Use a Consistent Visual Theme
Use a consistent visual theme throughout your presentation to maintain visual coherence. Choose colors, fonts, and background images that align with your topic or subject matter. A visually cohesive presentation adds a professional touch and creates a pleasant viewing experience for students.
6. Add Personal Touches
You can add personal anecdotes, stories, or relevant examples to connect with students on a deeper level. Inject humor, if appropriate, to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Your enthusiasm and personal touches will help make the presentation memorable and foster a positive learning environment.

Flip students’ presentations for more in-depth learning

What is flipped learning?
It is a pedagogical approach in which “direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space”, according to the Flipped Learning Network . What this means in practice is, typically, students engage with recorded lectures or other learning materials to build their knowledge on a topic ahead of their live class.
This changes the classroom into “a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter”.
- Green light student engagement: Squid Game tactics in the classroom
- The pandemic taught me the benefits of flipped homework
- An evidence-based approach to flipped learning
Traditionally, flipped learning activities have included students playing pre-recorded lectures, completing allocated reading or other preparatory materials, participating in online discussions and peer-to-peer sharing outside class time. However, one underexplored activity in flipped learning is student presentations.
Presentations are often used as an effective way for students to demonstrate their mastery of concepts and principles. This can include articulating what they already know, applying learned theories to solve real-world problems, and demonstrating their ability to ask more in-depth questions, a key element of Socratic learning – learning by asking questions in a cascading fashion .
But staging student presentations during classes can be difficult, owing to constraints on time. Typically, a project team comprises four to five students. Each student presents one aspect of a project and is individually assessed. Assuming the teacher allocates one three-hour session for this activity, for a class size of 40 to 50 students, each student has only two to three minutes for their presentation. A whole team’s presentation, including Q&A, discussion and teacher feedback, can last up to 20 minutes. This is hardly sufficient time for the teacher to ask in-depth questions, offer feedback for improvement or for students to respond comprehensively.
Students waiting to present are too focused on their own impending performance to properly learn from their peers.
Plus, with the advancement of artificial intelligence tools , teachers need to determine if a student’s presentation slides have been partially or wholly generated by AI and, if so, judge what the student has actually learned.
At PolyU, we have been experimenting with flipping student presentations. Many subjects include assessed projects, and we apply flipped learning to project team presentations.
How do flipped presentations work?
We ask students to pre-record their project presentations in their teams before presentation day. The teacher watches the recorded presentations beforehand. During the class presentation time, students do not need to present the whole project but can be asked to:
- Re-present selective slides
- Clarify various parts of their presentation
- Elaborate on specific issues that may or may not have been highlighted in their presentation
- Respond to hypothetical questions, such as “what-if” scenarios, about their project.
Our experience, informed by feedback from teachers and students, has shown that this flipped learning approach to student presentations frees up a lot of time for teachers to ask in-depth questions, further discuss specific issues with students and provide feedback to teams as well as the whole class.
Reviewing the recorded presentations prior to presentation day means the teacher arrives better informed about the overall performance, common mistakes and areas for improvement. This leads to fairer assessments for all students and highlights areas of focus for future teaching. Marks are not allocated until the project presentation session is over.
Other benefits of this approach include:
- Students are able to review or rate peer presentations
- Students can refine their work before they formally submit
- It facilitates active learning
- It provides a digital record of all deliverables
- It results in a repository of representative student work.
As the teacher often sets a maximum recording duration for each video, students have to practise time management in their presentations.
In terms of technology, we use Flip.com, a free educational tool for gathering and managing videos. Videos can be grouped, copied and remixed with different user access privileges. The tool also comes with a badging system to decorate users at various levels of contributions. Microsoft has announced the migration of Flip into MS Teams from Q4 2024.

Are Your Presentations Too Emotional — or Too Analytical?
When making a presentation, leaders need to balance appeals to both logic and emotion — the head and the heart..

When you have the opportunity to connect with an audience, stating fact after fact is not the way to go. You have an opportunity to connect more deeply than you can with just facts. Granted, some presentations are solely to convey updated information. But if that’s the case, you’re probably better off just emailing the particulars and saving everyone time. The best use of a presentation is to motivate others.
Staying flat and factual can work in a scientific report setting, but it won’t help motivate most audiences. Facts alone don’t help audience members understand why the information is important: You’re possibly relying too heavily on attendees to surmise the meaning behind them and make connections between point A and point B. You’re making the audience work way too hard to identify the decision you’re hoping to persuade them to make.

Using emotion is a way to bring emphasis to the details and help them stand out. You want to complement facts with a pinch of content that will help the audience understand the value of the data and the valuable outcomes if it’s acted upon — or the consequences of it being ignored.
But if you had an audience of, say, biotech engineers, and you pulled the emotional strings too hard, that would be a huge mistake. And if you had a sales team you were trying to pump up, and you went full-on data, that would also be a mistake. You need to empathetically think about what’s going to be the right amount of emotional appeal and the right amount of intellectual appeal for your audience before your presentation. You need to blend your content the right way, almost like a recipe. You need balance.
Credibility plays a crucial role in this balancing act. By demonstrating that you have an understanding of the audience’s preferences and needs, you’re establishing common ground, and that reinforces your reliability. Your established trustworthiness and expertise provide a solid foundation that amplifies the impact of your presentation.
This isn’t a new idea. Back in the fourth century B.C., the Greek philosopher Aristotle claimed that to persuade, one must employ three types of argument:
- Logos, or logical appeal, where the speaker provides evidence through words and data.
- Pathos, or emotional appeal, where the speaker stirs the emotions and imaginations of audience members.
- Ethos, or ethical appeal, where the speaker leans into their existing credibility and character.
Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals are still relevant today. What’s key for managers, and often quite difficult, is knowing how to balance these appeals to an audience. Whether you’re presenting to a room full of engineers, a group of potential investors, or your colleagues and peers, the ability to calculate the right level of logic and emotion — in a way that resonates with the audience’s roles, industries, and problems — is a profoundly useful skill.
First, Understand Your Audience
The first step in reaching for this balance is understanding your audience members. Are they data-driven decision makers who thrive on statistics and factual evidence? Or are they more likely to be swayed by personal stories and emotional connections? The industry, department, and roles of your audience members may help you define the ratio of analytical to emotional content to aim for as you engage them. If you don’t take time to understand your audience, you risk creating an imbalance. What’s more, when you show up with emotional or analytical energy that doesn’t match the audience’s, it hurts your credibility. (See “An Analytical and Emotional Balance That’s Just Right.”)
When presenting to analytical audiences, you want to pull back on how much you apply an emotional appeal. Use it lightly and with intention. Heavily analytical folks are still human, so it can be motivating to include material in a presentation that shows, for example, how lives will be changed if people take action from the data presented.
For more emotionally driven audiences or emotionally charged content, you want to pull back on the analytical appeal. Allow the audience to become immersed in all the feels. Emotionally driven audiences don’t enjoy the overuse of facts and details. They want to know that data has been carefully considered, but they likely won’t want to see 20 slides with charts.
The right balance is key. Even if you’re the most remarkable presenter in the world, being too geeky or too expressive in your storytelling can create a chasm between you and the audience.
For example, it’s easy for many of us to get caught up in numbers. To be successful in most jobs, we work with data, charts, graphs, timelines, and dashboards all the time. But when launching a revolutionary new product, it’d be unwise to overwhelm an audience with too many figures. While analytical content is essential, it should always be presented in a digestible and engaging manner.
Facts and Feelings: The Perfect Blend for Persuasive Presentations
To address both the mind and the heart, you must create a compelling narrative that is both persuasive and memorable. To do this, step back and inventory your slides to identify any content that can be made either more analytical or more emotional. Think about what balance you’re aiming for overall. Change the tone and content of slides where appropriate; for example, a slide with statistical data can be followed by a slide with a powerful quote or a compelling image.
Examples of typical types of analytical content include statistical data and facts; charts, graphs, and visual data; quotations from experts; logical arguments and reasoning; citations from research and studies; diagrams and explanatory videos; demonstrations and specimens; and appendices with documentation.
Examples of typical types of emotional content include anecdotes and stories; humor; emotive exclamations, like “This is amazing”; evocative photos and illustrations; metaphors and similes; suspenseful reveals and bold statements; dramatic music and sound effects; dramatizations and physical props; and rewards, benefits, and offers.
Whether you’re tilting to the head or the heart, you need to connect with the audience on a personal level.
Of course, analytics and emotions often can be blended for impact. You can attach data to anecdotes or tell stories about the people who generated the logical arguments to humanize your message. Charts and graphs can be designed to evoke emotion — for example, a chart can be revealed gradually , bar by bar, to create suspense and keep the audience invested in your narrative, and a graph showing a significant improvement can be paired with images of the team celebrating the achievement. And connecting data to something the audience really cares about demonstrates its value and makes it sticky. For example, don’t just say that a product creates 30% efficiency; say, “Our product creates 30% efficiency. Now, imagine how much more time you’ll have each day for higher priorities if each task is completed faster.”
Tying rewards, benefits, or offers directly to your call to action can further enhance the emotional appeal of your presentation. For instance, emphasizing how adopting a new strategy will not only improve efficiency but also lead to tangible payoffs, such as bonuses or professional growth opportunities, creates a compelling reason for your audience to act. This connection between action and personal gain helps motivate and engage your audience on a deeper emotional level.
And whether you’re tilting to the head or the heart, you need to connect with the audience on a personal level. When detailing statistics about a new product launch, share the stories about the journey of its development, highlighting the challenges overcome and the passion behind its creation.

While logical arguments can lead audience members to agree with you intellectually, emotional resonance is often what spurs them into action. Using storytelling and powerful imagery and connecting data to relatable scenarios can evoke that emotional response. Are you ready to elevate your communication skills? By carefully balancing analytical and emotional content, you can craft presentations grounded in facts that also engage and persuade your audience. Paying attention to the balance in your messaging gets your audience excited to move forward . This is the true power of effective presentations and presenters: the ability to drive people toward action.

How to use Gemini AI to create presentations in Google Slides
The only thing people enjoy less than sitting through a slideshow presentation is making a slideshow presentation. But with the integration of Gemini AI into Google Slides , that process is about to get a whole lot easier.
How to integrate Gemini into Google Slides
Getting started with gemini, what gemini can do in slides, what you can do with gemini in slides.
In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to seamlessly incorporate Gemini AI into your workflow. Whether you’re looking to enhance your design elements, streamline content generation, or simply save yourself some time, Gemini AI offers a suite of features that can transform the way you build your presentations.
As with the integrations for Docs and Sheets, Gemini AI is not available for use with Slides at the free tier. You’ll need a $20/month subscription to the Google One AI Premium Plan to gain access; otherwise, a work or school account through a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on will work.
Simply click on the “Try Gemini Advanced !” radio button in the top-right corner of the Gemini home screen and follow the prompts.
To begin, open a new or existing Slides presentation, then click the Ask Gemini button in the top-right corner of the screen (to the right of the share button). This will expand the Gemini AI sidebar running down the right side length of the screen. On the sidebar, you’ll be able to either enter your idea directly into the prompt window or take inspiration from the AI-generated image slideshow at the bottom of the screen.
Primarily, Gemini AI can create images, generate new slides, summarize a presentation, and write and rewrite content. It can also reference Drive files or Gmail as you write, as well as search the internet for current information and statistics to answer questions that arise while you write. Basically, it works as a writing and research aide, same as it does for Docs.
Gemini takes the grunt work out of the slide creation process and accelerates my workflow to a startling degree. While I’ve watched countless slideshows as a journalist (on earnings calls, product demos, keynote events, and the like), I’ve been lucky enough to not have had to make one myself in well over a decade. Suffice to say, actually producing a professional-looking slide deck these days takes me ages to accomplish, what with all the bullet points, image sourcing, thematic formatting, and whathaveyou.
But with the help of Gemini, I was able to pop out a solid eight-slide introduction to the Seattle, Washington, region that discusses the city’s main attractions, the state of its housing market (both sales and rentals), its education and health care systems, and reasons why folks should move to the region — all using simple prompts like, “add a slide discussing the education system in Seattle, the number of primary schools in the Seattle area, and Washington’s average education ranking among U.S. states.” I did all of that in under 10 minutes.
There were a few limitations to what Gemini could help me with, mind you. I repeatedly asked it to incorporate motion transitions between each slide ( because who doesn’t love a good star wipe ?); however, the system kept generating slides discussing transitions as a subject topic instead. I ultimately had to add those effects by hand.
Also, if I were actually giving this presentation in public, I’d have to spend a good amount of time going back through and confirming the veracity of each of the bullet points to ensure the system didn’t hallucinate anything, but without the AI, just creating this deck by hand would have taken me a couple of miserable hours at least.

A new research paper from Apple reveals that the company relied on Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), rather than Nvidia's more widely deployed GPUs, in training two crucial systems within its upcoming Apple Intelligence service. The paper notes that Apple used 2,048 Google TPUv5p chips to train its AI models and 8,192 TPUv4 processors for its server AI models.
Nvidia's chips are highly sought for good reason, having earned their reputation for performance and compute efficiency. Their products and systems are typically sold as standalone offerings, enabling customers to construct and operate them as the best see fit.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant is a powerful tool designed to streamline and enhance your professional productivity. Whether you're new to AI or a seasoned pro, this guide will help you through the essentials of Copilot, from understanding what it is and how to sign up, to mastering the art of effective prompts and creating stunning images.
Additionally, you'll learn how to manage your Copilot account to ensure a seamless and efficient user experience. Dive in to unlock the full potential of Microsoft's Copilot and transform the way you work. What is Microsoft Copilot? Copilot is Microsoft's flagship AI assistant, an advanced large language model. It's available on the web, through iOS, and Android mobile apps as well as capable of integrating with apps across the company's 365 app suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The AI launched in February 2023 as a replacement for the retired Cortana, Microsoft's previous digital assistant. It was initially branded as Bing Chat and offered as a built-in feature for Bing and the Edge browser. It was officially rebranded as Copilot in September 2023 and integrated into Windows 11 through a patch in December of that same year.
Google announced Thursday that it is releasing Gemini 1.5 Flash, it's snack-sized large language model and ChatGPT-4o mini competitor, to all users regardless of their subscription level.
The company promises "across-the-board improvements" in terms of response quality and latency, as well as "especially noticeable improvements in reasoning and image understanding."
