College of Charleston (South Carolina)’s 2023-24 Essay Prompts
Why this college essay.
Many students apply to the College of Charleston based on our location, size, reputation, beautiful campus, and nice climate. While these are all important considerations in choosing a college, why is the College of Charleston a particularly good match for you?
Extenuating Circumstances Essay
Are there any anomalies or extenuating circumstances that you’d like us to consider when we review your application?
Common App Personal Essay
The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don‘t feel obligated to do so.
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you‘ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
What will first-time readers think of your college essay?

College of Charleston 2024-25 Supplemental Essay Prompt Guide
Early Action/Decision: Nov 1
Regular Decision Deadline: Jan 15
College of Charleston 2024-25 Application Essay Explanations
The Requirements: 1 optional essay of up to 750 words
Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why
OPTIONAL: Many students apply to the College of Charleston based on our location, size, reputation, beautiful campus, and nice climate. While these are all important considerations in choosing a college, why is the College of Charleston a particularly good match for you? (750 words max)
Admissions wants the skinny on why you think the College of Charleston is the best place for you to spend the next four years of your life pursuing a degree in higher education. They have likely received a lot of essays detailing the dreamy location, beautiful campus, and warm climate, so to stand out from the pack, you’d be wise to go a step or two further in detailing exactly why the College of Charleston is a great match for you. Start by setting aside some time to do some research (and take notes!) on their website . Explore the classes you’d like to take, professors you hope to learn from or research with, clubs you envision joining, and more. Learn about special events on campus to get a feel for student life. Read over the school’s mission statement to get to know the community both on and around campus. You might even want to read up on the notable alumni you admire and provide examples in your essay as to how they inspired you to apply! By the time you’re done with your research, you’ll have a whole list of reasons for wanting to call the College of Charleston your new home. Then, all you have to do is arrange them into a cohesive story that shows admissions that the College of Charleston is the perfect place for you to pursue your degree.

The Honors College Curriculum
How it works.
As an Honors College student, you’ll take honors courses alongside your College of Charleston courses. You’ll typically enroll in one to two honors courses per semester. These courses are small, thought-provoking and made up entirely of Honors College students.
Honors courses are taught by faculty from different departments across campus. Why? It exposes you to a range of concepts, disciplines, and ideas. And many of your honors courses count towards the College’s general education requirements or your major.
A Personalized Approach
You won’t have to navigate the honors curriculum alone. You’ll meet one-on-one with your Honors College advisor every semester. Together, you’ll pick out the courses, opportunities, and post-grad plans that fit best with your goals and aspirations.
And with priority registration for all honors students, you’ll be well-positioned to build a class schedule based on your specific needs.
Highlights of the Honors Curriculum
- Your first year in the Honors College sets you up for success from day one.
- Honors courses build on that success with a focus on critical thinking.
- Practice what you’ve learned through real-world experiential learning like research and internships.

10 ways to own your college admissions essay.
In honor of South Carolina’s College Application Month , College of Charleston experts offer 10 tips to rock your admissions essay. The College’s admissions essay questions ( available now at this link ) are:
- What event in the last ten years will have the greatest impact on the millennial generation?
Time to buckle down!
The admissions essay is an important part of the application, and one of the few parts you have control over as you enter your senior year of high school – the grades you’ve already received and the extracurricular activities you’ve already participated in won’t change, but your essay is what you make it.
Associate Director of Admissions Christina DeCario looks for clues about an applicant’s personality, college preparedness and writing skills in the admissions essay. Here, DeCario and English professor Whitney Adams offer tips for you to impress admissions counselors with your essay, show that you’re capable of college-level writing and (bonus) come extra prepared for your required first-year English course.
1. Look at it as an opportunity.
“The essay is a very important part of the holistic review process,” DeCario says. “If your profile is a little uneven, like you’re successful outside the classroom but your grades aren’t quite there, or you’re the valedictorian but you’re not a good test taker, the essay can push you from a maybe to a yes. Just show us you’ll bring something unique to campus.”
RELATED: 8 Do’s and Don’ts of College Admissions Essays
2. be confident in your writing..
Adams has noticed that many students she works with aren’t confident in their writing abilities. “If you write without confidence, you’re not convincing yourself or your reader, so find your own writing voice and trust yourself,” she advises.
3. Show, don’t tell.
“Include something I won’t get from your transcript,” DeCario suggests. “I know what you’re interested in studying and where you live from your application. Use the essay to give me insight into your personality by providing anecdotes that give me something new.”
4. Don’t go over the word limit.
It may seem obvious, but much of high school writing is based on a minimum number of pages or words, while the admissions essay has a maximum (500 words). “It forces you to be succinct, so write efficiently,” Adams says.
5. Proofread three ways.
DeCario recommends that you “proofread. Have someone else proofread. Then read it out loud to yourself. When you proofread, you should check for grammar and sentence structure. When someone else proofreads they will be looking for clarity in the essay. When you read it out loud, you’ll catch errors or even entire missing words like ‘a’ or ‘and’ that you didn’t catch when you read it in your head.”
6. If you make a claim, back it up.
Eyes on the prize
This is an easy way to show what you’ve learned from writing in high school. “The biggest problem I come across in my classes is students making statements without backing them up with evidence,” Adams says.
This may or may not apply to your essay, but if you do make claims that you can’t prove without an outside source, make sure you include evidence.
7. Explain why.
“I focus a lot on the question, ‘so what?’ in my classes,” Adams explains. “Why does it matter, why is it important? You have to look at a subject, even if you are the subject, critically to be able to answer that question, but it’s the question that readers care about most.”
8. Have a conclusion.
Make sure to wrap up your points in a way that’s true to the rest of the essay. “So many essays start off well, the second and third paragraphs are solid, and then they just end,” DeCario says. “You need to explain why you told me all the things you wrote about earlier in the essay. Relate it to yourself and the essay question.”
9. Answer the question…
“Let’s say you’re asked to describe yourself in one word: then describe yourself in one word. Don’t describe yourself in two words and don’t say you can’t describe yourself in one word because there’s a word for that – undefined – and because that’s what we asked you to do. It also relates to college preparedness. If a professor asks you to describe yourself in one word and you describe yourself in two, then you’ve failed.”
10. … The whole question
If an essay question is two parts, “keep the entire question in mind,” DeCario recommends. Make sure that you’re providing a thorough answer to the prompt.

College of Charleston EA Class of 2024 Honors
Thought I’d start a thread for early action applicants to College of Charleston honors college. DS20 applied on 10/30, including the HC app. We are in New England, and he was just invited to an online interview with someone from the Honors program, so he set it up for next week. The invite stated that it wasn’t mandatory–more informational. Not sure if it means anything. We’ve never visited, but have friends whose kids have attended CofC and loved it. If he gets in, we will definitely make the trip!
@CTCape My New England D20 applied as well. Still working on the honors application though. We have visited and it’s a great area. Can’t blame these Northern kiddos for wanting to get somewhere warmer!!!
@mamawitch I know, right?! All of a sudden it’s freezing and gray, just as we turned back the clocks. Someplace warm sounds amazing right now. I’m looking forward to making the trip to Charleston if DS gets in. Waiting to find out before spending the $ on travel.
@CTCape My S19 is at UF and I’m very jealous right now!! D didn’t want to go that far or big. CofC is the farthest and largest school she applied to. She still wants some winter, but not the 6-7 months we get here in ME!! I’m looking forward to going to some accepted student days at the schools she gets into. Definitely a different feeling for them knowing they’re in compared to deciding if they want to apply.
Has anyone heard when decisions are being released?
@alogan I’m pretty sure EA notification date is Jan 15th and Honors is Jan 31st.
If we applied early action and honors will we hear from the school on the 15th and then ALSO the honors college on the 31st or just one notification on the 31st?
@corchard I’m pretty sure admissions decisions come before honors. Not 100% sure of dates.
@corchard My guess would be yes, separate notifications. There will be kids who get into the school, but not honors. I found the dates on the CofC website.
Joining in the wait … S20 EA HC . I don’t know who is more excited. Looking forward to seeing many happy post in the near future!!!
Has anybody gotten asked to apply for the departmental scholarships yet? Thought it was a bit weird to get that email without being accepted, especially if the date the application is supposed to be complete is the day we get our decisions for the Honors College…
@wildem My DS got that email yesterday. I was curious about the timing as well.
Waiting to see if the invitations to the interview weekend get sent out soon. That would be a reasonable explanation for sending the scholarship applications early.
Called admissions office- they said they’re releasing some decisions tomorrow at 6. Check your emails!
@wildem613 , do you know if that’s just for honors college applicants? My son applied EA but not for honors. I hadn’t thought he’d hear anything until January but earlier would be great (hoping for good news)!
He also got that departmental scholarship email but when he clicked on his intended major (computing in the arts) it added a bunch of short essays about why math is important to him…and math is not his thing, so he didn’t complete it. Hope they are serious that it has no bearing on acceptance…
That would be like a month early. Is that usual? Now I’m nervous for him!!
For those who have received the email about applying for departmental scholarships, I have a question for my DS about one of the questions on the application. He hasn’t filled it out yet, but he clicked on the major he applied for (Econ), as well as 2 other potential majors he’s interested in (Finance and Pol Sci). This generated additional department-specific questions listed under “Business School Opportunities”. The first question was straightforward (“500 words on why you should receive a business school scholarship.”), but the second question was worded strangely: “Please address your eligibility requirements that may not be reflected in your transcript.” Eligibility for the business school scholarships? Eligibility for CofC in general? We aren’t sure what they are referring to, as no eligibility requirements are listed. Thoughts about what eligibility they might be referring to?
I would email the financial aid department and ask. I’m assuming it means for the business school scholarships, but you never know. Couldn’t hurt to ask!
