After completing her Bachelors in Fashion Designing from a well-known college in France, Aditi has opened a boutique in a posh market in Kolkata. She has divided the work in smaller units and each employee is well trained to perform his/her task efficiently. The sales persons are allowed to close a deal with a buyer by giving a maximum of 5 percent discount, whereas the decision to give any further discount rests with Aditi as the final authority. In the earlier period of her business venture, employees were asked to put in extra hours of work. In return she had promised to give them a special incentive within a year. Therefore, when the business was doing well, she honour her commitment by giving bonus to her employees. She also instructed her employees that communication from top to bottom should follow the official lines of command. However, she tends to be more biased towards her female employees, when it comes to solve the conflicts among employees. 1. The Central Board of Secondary Examination [CBSE] carries out periodic changes frequently in the structure of syllabus and question pattern across different commerce subjects . With more and more questions being added which aim to evaluate concept application, analysis and interpretation, the prevalent practice of theoretical learning is being done away with. The inclusion of Business Studies class 12 case studies is a step in this direction. Further, the vast nature of syllabus in the subject makes this way testing much more practical in place of merely listing and rewriting. Business studies broadly encompass ‘Principles and Functions of Management’ which deal with management, its nature, elements, theories and application as well as ‘Business Finance and Marketing’ which concerns financial markets , marketing management and consumer protection. Before taking a look at the Business Studies Class 12, take a look at the pattern of the paper is as follows:

Note: Case studies are not separate sections or parts. They can be asked as all across the above-mentioned sections.

In particular, case studies are based on real-life scenarios which concern business-related situations. This involves, for instance, cases wherein a person starts a business concern, problems faced in its management, a unique set of circumstances encountered and a host of other different situations. The students are required to correlate concepts in management and solve questions based on their understanding of such concepts. Identification of a particular aspect of Business Management is also a highly used testing criterion.

Here are a few examples of case study questions you can expect to see in the Class 12 Business Studies paper based on official CBSE Question Paper 2020:

Umang Gupta is the Managing Director of Denver Ltd. The company had established a good name for itself and had been doing well. It was known for the timely completion of orders. The Production Manager, Ms Kanta was efficiently handling the processing of the order and had a team of fourteen motivated employees working under her. Everything was going on well. Unfortunately, she met with an accident. Umang knew that in the absence of Ms Kanta, the company may not be able to meet the deadlines. He also knew that not meeting the deadlines may lead to customer dissatisfaction with the risk of loss of business and goodwill. So, he had a meeting with his employees in which accurate the speedy processing of orders was planned. Everybody agreed to work as a team because the behaviour of Umang Gupta was positive towards the employees of the organisation. Hence everyone put in extra time and efforts and the targets were met on time. Not only this, Umang visited Ms Kanta and advised her to take sufficient rest. 1. Identify the leadership style of Umang Gupta and draw a diagram depicting the style. 2. State any two values highlighted by the behaviour of Umang Gupta. (CBSE, Delhi 2017)

Indian Youth Organisation (IYO) organised a visit of its members to an old age home to inculcate the habit of social work among them. The visit revealed that the living conditions of the inmates of the old age home were not hygienic. So, the IYO members decided to clean the premises. During their cleanliness drive, they realised that the old age home also required pest control. But some of the inmates of old age home were reluctant about it because they believed that the pest control might create health problems for them. IYO, therefore, decided to provide ethical, safe and odourless pest control. They showed to the inmates of old age home a pamphlet of the proposed pest control product which promised easy, inexpensive and long-lasting pest control. The inmates happily agreed and the pest control was carried out. It worked for a fortnight but to their dismay, the effect started wearing off. IYO contacted the pest control company which kept on postponing their visit. After waiting for a month, IYO filed a cased in the consumer court. The consumer court was satisfied with the genuineness of the complaint and issued necessary directions to the pest control company. 1. State the six directions that might have been issued by the court. 2. Also, identify any two values that are being communicated by IYO to society. (CBSE, Delhi 2017)

ABC Ltd is a consumer appliance company established in 1992. With its effort of quality maintenance, it has established a competent name in the market for its products. In its efforts of specialisation, it has set up different departments of finance, sales, manufacturing, technical services and maintenance services. As the spaces of operation have risen along with soaring consumer demand, ABD Ltd came to resolution to alter its current principle of management in order to meet varying requirements of the environment.  Write the specific general principle of management the company intends to modify to meet the changing requirements.

Gold Land Pvt. Ltd. is a wheat-producing company. Daily 5000 bags of wheat weighing 10 kg each are produced here. In comparison to the previous year, this ere has been less number of bags produced on a per-day basis. The number is around 4500 which is less than the target of 5000 set by the company. The company however has been able to reduce the costs involved in comparison to last year’s spending on the production and packaging of each bag. The quality of bags has also been up to the mark. Identify the concept of management ignored here.

A floor manager of a mall is a very good manager as he utilizes all the functions of management to minimize the cost of maintenance of his area. He directs all the staff members under him to follow the targets and advises them to put their efforts in the direction of the achievement of these targets. Under his guidance, the employees admit that they learn a lot and are able to meet their targets. This has led to an increase in their salaries. Identify the importance of management highlighted above.

A bank named ‘Dhan Sangraha Karta’ allows the Kapoor family to deposit their money time and again in it. It gives a definite return to this family which is in the form of interest. To get this interest the money stored in the household of Kapoor family gets entry into this bank. Nearby there is a stock exchange, Mr Rajan Kapoor, who is the head of the family, goes there and buys securities. He says that in this way more return in earned by him on his saved money though the risk is also there. 1. Identify the process in the above case performed by the bank and the stock exchange. 2. What are the roles of the bank and the stock exchange with respect to each other? 3. Name a condition for the bank to perform its role in this process. 4. Name a condition for the stock market to perform its role in this process.

To make the sports day of the school successful the Headmaster of the school divided all the activities into task groups each dealing with a specific area like holding of the event, the arrangement of medals, refreshments etc. Each group was placed under the overall supervision of a senior teacher. The physical education teacher was made responsible for holding different events, the home science teacher for refreshments and the Maths teacher for medals. Ganesh Electronics Ltd. Manufactures washing machines, microwave oven and air conditioners. The company is facing a lot of problem these days. The company’s margin is under pressure and the profits and market share are declining. The production department blames marketing for not meeting sales targets and marketing department blames production department for producing goods which are not of good quality meeting customers’ expectations. The finance blames both production and marketing department declining return on investment and bad marketing.

Hema is one of the most successful managers of her company, ‘Kobe Ltd’. She uses her creativity and initiative in handling challenging situations at work. The knowledge gained by her during her student days at a renowned management institute as well as through her observation and experience over the years is applied by Hema in a skilful manner in the context of the realities of a given situation. She often reads books and other literature in various fields of management to keep her knowledge updated.

(i) An aspect of the nature of management is being highlighted in the above description. Identify the aspect.

(ii) Explain any three features of the aspect identified in part (i).

(i) Management as an art. (ii) Three features that establish it as an art are: (a) Existence of theoretical knowledge. As in art, in management too, there is a lot of literature available in various areas of management which the manager has to specialise in. (b) Personalised application Like in any art, in management too, a manager applies his acquired knowledge in a personalised and unique manner. This gives rise to different styles of management. He has an efficient team working under him consisting of Rajat- the Production manager, Vinay – the Marketing manager and Adit – the Finance manager. They understand and interpret the policies made by Das, ensure that their departments have adequate manpower, assign them the necessary duties and motivate them to achieve the desired objectives.

He found that his department was under-staffed and other departments were not cooperating with his department for smooth functioning of the organization. Management as a Science
Art is the skilful and personal application of existing knowledge to achieve desired results. Science is a systematized body of knowledge that explains certain general truths.

 

Profession is an economic activity which requires specialized knowledge and skill.
Management fulfills this criterion as there exist a number of theories and principles on management which have been formulated by various management experts. Management, like Science, is also a well- defined body of knowledge containing a number of theories and principles formulated by various management experts Management fulfills this criterion as it includes a set of theories and principles formulated by various management experts.
Management fulfills this criterion as a good manager works through a combination of practice, creativity, imagination, initiative and innovation. Like the principles of pure science, the principles of management are also based on personal observation and tested through repeated experimentation. Unlike other professions, management as a profession does not fulfill this criteria as anyone can be called a manager regardless of his/her academic qualifications.
Management fulfills this criterion as a person becomes a better manager with constant practice and experience. This also leads to emergence of different styles of management. Unlike the scientific principles, the principles of management lack universal validity as it deals with human behavior which is complex in nature. Different people react differently to the same situation and therefore their behavior cannot be predicted with accuracy. Several management associations exist today. However, unlike other professions, it is not necessary to be a member of such an association to become a manager.

Coordination: Definition Coordination is the process of integrating the individual and group efforts in pursuit of common goals.

Importance of Coordination

  • Growth in size: With the growth in the size of an organisation, there is a proportionate increase in the number of its employees.So there is a greater need to unify the efforts of diverse individuals towards the realisation of organisational goals.
  • Functional differentiation: As a result of functional differentiation in an organisation, its people and activities get divided into It facilitates the achievement of desired  objectives with minimum conflicts by providing the necessary amount, quality, timing and sequence of efforts.small departments on the basis of functions like marketing, finance etc. Therefore, there is a need to reconcile the goals pursued by each of the departments with the goals of the organisation as a whole.
  • Specialisation: More number of specialists are deployed in the present day organizations keeping in mind the need for specialisation due to greater complexity and diversity in their way of functioning. In order to integrate the different approaches, interests or opinion of the specialists and resolve conflicts between them, coordination is essential

Features of Coordination:

Question 3: Sujata works as a designer in an export house. As per the terms of an order received by the export house, she has to get 1000 units of denim jackets made in 15 days @ ? 2000 per jacket. She is able to complete her target production in 20 days because in order to complete the order in 15 days she would have made the workers work over time. As a result, the cost of production per jacket may have increased by ? 100. In the context of the above case: Is Sujata efficient in her work? Question 7: Ramarjuna joins an IT firm as a system analyst after completing his masters in Computer Science. As the nature of his work demands he has to work in very close coordination with all the departmental heads in the firm, very soon Ramarjuna realizes that each departmental head has own individual style of working. They differ greatly in their day-to-day approach to work. They tend to deal with a given situation, an issue or a problem through a combination of their own experience, creativity, imagination, initiative and innovation. In the context of the above case: Identify and explain the nature of management highlighted in the above case. Answer: In the above case, management is being considered as an art. Art is the skillful and personal application of existing knowledge to achieve desired results. The evaluation of management as an art is given below:

  • Existence of theoretical knowledge: Art presupposes the existence of certain knowledge. Management fulfills this criterion as there exist a number of theories and principles on management which have been formulated by various management experts.
  • Personalised applications: Art is a personalised concept. Management fulfills this criterion as a good manager works through a combination of his own experience, creativity, imagination, initiative and innovation to carry out the assigned work.
  • Based on practice and creativity: All art is practical. Management fulfills this criterion as a person becomes a better manager with constant practice and experience. This also leads to emergence of different styles of management.

Question 8: Dharam is a well-known businessman in the field of publishing. He owes the success of his business to his own education in business management and his team of certified management consultants. Therefore, he decides to send both his children Danush and Damini abroad to acquire a degree in business management in their individual area of expertise. He feels that all over the world there is marked growth in management as a discipline, but still it is not considered to be a full-fledged profession for certain reasons. In the context of the above case:

  • Explain the reasons because of which Dharam considers management as a discipline.
  • Critically examine the various reasons because of which management is not considered to be a full-fledged profession.
  • Dharam considers management as a discipline because there exist a number of theories and principles on management which have been formulated by various management experts. It is taught in various schools and colleges, all over the world, as a separate subject of study.
  • Restricted entry. Unlike management, the entry to the other professions is restricted through an examination or eligibility criteria like specific percentage in a particular degree or diploma. However, management as profession does not fulfill this criterion as anyone can be called a manager regardless of his/her academic qualifications.
  • Professional association: Unlike managers, all working professionals have to be a member of an affiliated professional association which regulates their entry, grants certificate of practice and formulates and enforces code of conduct. For example,the practicing lawyers have to be a member of Bar Council of India, the practicing doctors should have membership of All India Medical Association etc. However, in case of management, although there exist several management associations like the AIMA (All India Management Association), neither does it have any statutory backing nor is it mandatory for the practicing managers to a member of such associations.

Question 9: Kartik joins a garment factory as a plant supervisor in Lucknow. He observes that the output of some workers is very low as compared to the standards set for their performance. On analyzing the reasons for the same, he finds out that a lot of time of the workers is wasted in getting the requisite materials issued from the store. Whereas on asking, the store keeper complains that there is no harmony in the working of the production department as a whole. Everyday the workers approach him at the last minute to procure different kinds of threads, laces, mirrors, buttons etc. If it is not available in the store then he has to place an order with the purchase officer. As a result, a lot of time of the workers is wasted. So, in order to integrate the various production activities, henceforth, Kartik ensures,that the store keeper is informed well three days in advance about the requisite material. Consequently, the store keeper is able to keep the materials ready for the workers every morning in accordance with their requirements. In context of the above case:

  • Functional differentiation: As a result of functional differentiation in an organization, its people and activities get divided into small departments on the basis of functions like marketing, finance etc. Since each such department tends to formulate its own objectives, policies etc., there is a need to reconcile the goals pursued by each of such departments with the goals of the organization as a whole.

Question 10: Geetika is working in a private sector bank. One of her key function relates to the formulation of the overall organisational goals and strategies of the bank. Identify the level of management at which she is working? State any three other functions that she has to perform at this level. Answer: Geetika is working at the top level of management in the private sector bank. The three other functions that she has to perform at this level are outlined below:

  • She is responsible for the success and failure of the organisation.
  • She is responsible for all the business activities and its impact on society.
  • She has to coordinate the activities of different departments in pursuit of common goals.

Question 11: Arundhati has been promoted to the post of Marketing Division Head of a soft drink company. Identify the level of management at which she will be working henceforth. State any four functions that she will have to perform at this level. Answer: Henceforth, Arundhati will be working at middle level of management. The four functions that she will have to perform at this level are stated below:

  • She has to ensure that her department has the necessary staff.

ISC Board Class 12 Business Studies Sample Paper 2024-25: Instructions to Candidates

  • You are allowed additional fifteen minutes for only reading the question paper.
  • You must NOT start writing during reading time.
  • This question paper has 6 printed pages.
  • It is divided into three sections and has 13 questions in all.
  • All questions are compulsory. Answer all questions.
  • Section A has sixteen subparts which are very short answer questions. Each question carries 1 mark.
  • While attempting Multiple Choice Questions in Section A, you are required to write only ONE option as the answer.
  • Section B has eight questions which are short answer questions. Each question carries 4 marks.
  • Section C has four questions which are long answer questions. Each question carries 8 marks.
  • Internal choices have been provided in two questions in Section B and in one question in Section C.
  • The intended marks for questions are given in brackets [ ].
