What you circled is a multi -section electrolytic capacitor. If you replace any capacitor in the unit, that is the most basic one. You could replace it with equivalent separate capacitors if you have the room.

That cap has an insulating paper sleeve, which means that the can is not at ground potential. Normally the (-) minus of all the sections of a multi-section electrolytic cap is the can. If the minus (-) is not to be at chassis ground, then the cap was wrapped in a paper sleeve. What I'm wondering is if this amp uses Germanium output transistors, rather than Silicon? I purchased a KLH transistor amp right about the same time-frame as this AR amp, and it is Germanium technology, which is far more delicate than Silicon.

An Old Geezer

The KLH 16 predates the AR amp and out of production by the time the AR amp came out except for those being sold off by KLH from existing unsold stock. While the AR amp and tuner are IMHO a pair of the nicest looking pieces out there sadly do not expect them to be as good as they look. They are typical New England designs. Not trying to compete spec wise but just to deliver music to a group who is interested in just listeing to music. The amp is okay but nothing to write home about and the tuner is a decent erformer but not a dx'er by any sense. Yours are really in great looking shape and have the optional wood sleeves. Get them up and running, add a pair of AR3 series speakers and an AR turntable and you may find out why Bostonians ate these systems up. We sold a load of these systems to persons who would come in look and listen and then simply say they did not need all the bells and whistles and hated the looks of the jumbled gear from other companies and simplicity was all they needed as they simply wanted to listen to a record or FM when they got home after going to The Boston Pops or Boston Symphony Orchestra.

You will need to find out exactly what the value of that yellow cap is, as it appears squeezed in to a corner and you do not have lots of extra room to work with. Guessing that it is maybe a two section cap, you probably will have to take out that mounting clip to install two seperate caps side by side as a replacement. But that is making assumptions that it is a two section, etc. Caps are alot smaller than 30-40 years ago now so you might not have a problem but you need to find out the value before you can move on with that idea. IF the paper jacket is not too snug you might be able to rotate it on the inner metal can till you can read the values, if you do not have a schematic.

Okay, I'll try and do that tomorrow when I'm inside it again. Thanks for the help guys

Good amp IMHO this integrated is well worth the trouble - sold these when new and acquired several used . At the time - thought they sounded way better than the competition. Only caution would be they do run hot - make sure they have plenty of ventilating space around the unit. Definitely wouldn't stack anything on top of it.

ecluser

Congrats for your AR set, they are lovely! One of the most interresting aspect of this amp is that it can drive low impedance load. There is a service manual for them on Hifiengine. Output transistors are the popular 2N3055. The multisection capacitor is a three sections cap: C31A (1000uF/40V), C31B (1500 uF/25V) and C31C (500 uF/20V). They all have their negative terminal to ground.

Hmm not sure I still want to recap this..... It just sounds too damn good to mess with ! DC offset checks out good / measured a dozen resistors & they were all very much in spec / caps all look mint, If it 'aint broke don't fix it right ? I think I'll just concentrate on getting my Nad 160a working again for now.

BinaryMike

I had forgotten that the AR amp used driver transformers until I saw that chassis photo. There should be more DIY activity on this type of power amplifier, because it's the only truly complementary output stage technology that ever saw commercial success. Anybody know where to get driver transformers?

B3Nut

tubes and spinny things!

Just downloaded the SM off hifiengine...wow, only other place I've seen an output topology like that in a solid-state amplifier is in the old solid-state amp modules Leslie used...it's not much different to the Leslie design. IIRC Don Leslie was trying to make a solid-state amplifier that sounded like his tube amplifiers. As far as clean tone goes, he more or less succeeded. I have a Leslie with 4 of those modules, if you've heard the Karma Initiative Stormy Monday track, you've heard that Leslie. Interesting amplifier! BinaryMike: wouldn't it be still a quasi-complementary amplifier given that the output devices are all NPN? TP

  • Jul 16, 2010

Well, I consider it full complementary because the upper and lower halves of the output stage are 100% identical in every way, aside from possible mismatch in transistors of the same type. Other opinions may be valid! I've seen this type of output stage in Sansui products, e.g. the well-regarded 3000A receiver. It was also used extensively in early car stereo tape players (Muntz, etc.).

If the upper and lower halves of the output stage are 100% identical in every way, this is not a (full or true) complementary design, which implies by definition the use of complementary (PNP and NPN) transistors. It is not a quasi-complementary output stage neither because in a (2 stage) quasi-complementary output stage the driver transistors are complementary (PNP and NPN) to each other and the output transistors are of the same type (NPN or PNP), or the driver transistors are of the same type and the power transistors are complementary. This last configuration is less frequent. This (AR) configuration is called a single-ended class AB push-pull stage. The schematic doesn't show it but the secondary windings of the driver transformer must be out of phase.

headphone outlet noise. I know this going to seem too basic - but #1 -sure the headphones are OK - I've had cords go bad on me from one day to the next for no apparent/discernible reason - always seems to be the last thing i check - usually followed by a self administered dope slap. The socket it's self can go bad - at least on these units it a 1/4" (5.7mm?) stereo jack rather than a idiot 3.5mm jack - but they can stretch to the point where one contact can get lossy enough to create problems. Have owned a couple of pieces over the years that were retired from studio use - one mixer spent 2 decades plus with a headphone plugged into it - this did have to be replaced. The other thing to check would be the solder joints at either end of the two resistors that are probably pretty obviously attached to the jack itself. try gently tapping these with something non-conductive while you listen - if this seems to have become at all micro phonic in the grossest sense - resolder these resistors and see if that helps. those resistors are there basically to allow the volume control to operate in useful and hopefully linear range without hearing the noise that otherwise would be obvious with the super high sensitivity of headphones. I suppose it's possible to have a bad resistor - oddly enough I don't remember ever encountering one and would think if it did fail you'd have no sound at all from the channel ? If nothing else seems possible - it might be worthwhile to remove both and compare their measured resistance ( remember to mark the good and bad ? before desoldering.) Good luck - I think this is worth the trouble.

Great article Gene. Remember the NHT 3.3? I think Kenny used some of the AR9 design on that speaker.

I had the follow up model, the AR9ls. Loved that speaker, ultimately taken by foam rot. The changes were moving the woofers to the front, a 12" forward facing driver with a 10" down facing driver that fired into a " bass contour chamber", whatever that really is. The other improvement was mounting the upper midrange and tweeter on a common plate, significantly reducing the center to center spacing which helps with vertical polar response. Never heard then side by side, so hard to assess which was "better", but my in room response extended to 20Hz easily. I think one of the things the new design did was perform better when freestanding. Like the Allison speakers, the original AR9 was designed to work up against the wall for best performance. AR was a great company, I am still using my "The AR Turntable" with Grace 714 unipivot Tonearm today when I pull out the vynil......

If you took this design and updated it with components from today, this would still be a fantastic speaker. I remember this box. The AR9 reminds me of what Legacy and, in a newer design paradigm, RBH makes now. Fantastically engineered big speakers that offer performance for much less money than their direct competition. Thanks for the flashback.

I have loved my pair of AR9s for over 40 years. They started bi-amped with the passive crossovers for the first 10 years before being converted to tri-amped with active crossovers, now using DEQX HDP5. They have always been powered by Yamaha M2 amps, originally two, now 4 of them. I have tried to upgrade many times but have only recently been able build what I feel is a better sounding system. I still listen to the AR9s and still love their sound.

It would be nice to see some measurements, something like the NRC measurements done by Soundstage, or even your own. Just how good were the AR-9s? I remember hearing them a long time ago, but I did not find the differences were worth the extra money compared to my old Kef 104s. As well, I would have needed a different amplifier to drive them, which would also cost money. Bryston 4B? I now know that the audition conditions in the store were not very good, and that the more even off axis dispersion of the AR-9 were very significant in a listening room. But I didn't know of Dr. Floyd Toole's research at the NRC very well in those days.

Missing from this article was any mention of the role that the introduction and popularity of separate powered subwoofers played in the decline of this sort of loudspeaker - largely driven by the introduction of Low Frequency Effects (.1) soundtracks in home theater systems. It was a short step from there to redirecting the low bass from other channels to the subwoofer(s), reducing the need for as much amplifier power and deep bass speaker output from the many more than two main channels - probably a large part of the reason for the scorn of older hifi fans for listening to music with home theater setups.

My first very good longtime stereo was a pair of just-released original (later dubbed "Larger") Advents in 1970 powered by a Dynaco SCA-80 integrated amp assembled from a kit. When I set up my first 5.1 home theater and shopped for the audio part of the setup, I looked for front main speakers that sounded like my thirty-five year-old (and several-times re-foamed) Advents. Before subs became popular, I built into my SCA-80 a "bottom-octave boost" circuit from a schematic in a magazine. This sort of hack led to a cottage industry of replacing the foam surrounds on Advent woofers shredded by this sort of long-term abuse: "Bring in your old Advent woofers - for us to refoam for someone else - and you can buy someone else's re-foamed woofers." The hifi sales guy I was asking for speakers that sounded like the Advents thought I was crazy for wanting speakers that had woofers and sounded like my Advents. "Those were junk!" He was pushing what were essentially expensive satellite speakers and a sub. I bought a set of Paradigm Studio 40s for the front, Studio 20s for the sides, and their center channel speaker that was essentially the 40 in black with its footpads on one of the long sides. In the early two-thousands, Paradigm speakers hadn't yet become stratospherically expensive. They are still the core of my 7.2.4 theater setup, supplemented by less expensive rears and overheads and a second sub, driven by a Yamaha RX-A3070 and an old Denon AVR-2370CI for the four overheads. The Advents now live in my living room stereo, powered by my old Yamaha RX-A1030 5.1 receiver. And I play the low bass both from the subs and the mains.

Floyd Toole

Acoustician and wine connoisseur.

Figure 18.3 (h) in the 3rd edition of my book "Sound Reproduction" shows 0, 30 and 60 deg curves for the AR-9, and it was very well behaved. It got high scores in double-blind listening tests and the anechoic curves show why: flattish on-axis response, uniform flattish off-axis behavior - both characteristics that were lacking in many (most?) loudspeakers of the time. The extended bass and optimized room coupling helped - this is shown in Figure 9.12 which includes in-room measurements. Chapter 18 in the book shows anechoic data on many other loudspeakers of the period; it is called "Fifty Years of Progress in Loudspeaker Design".

I had a pair of AR9 that I purchased new in 1980.They were driven by an Akai PS-200M that I bought at the same time. They sounded amazing in my apartment but couldn’t really push them without getting complaints from neighbour. I think my interest in audio was one of the primary drivers for purchasing a house in 1982. They were the source of much critical listening pleasure and dance party enthusiasm. I kept them until 2008 when I finally caved to pressure from my wife. They didn’t fit with her sense of room esthetics. I did keep the Akai system and today the amp powers the left and right speakers of my 7.2.6 home theatre. I had the amp tested by a local repair shop recently and it is still close to the original published specs.

I love that you brought attention to the AR9s! My father had a pair of these as I was growing up, so I went out and bought a set of AR9LSs thinking they'd be better (I was heavily influenced by the marketing brochure). They were not (at least not to me). I promptly sold them and bought a set of AR9s. We still have both pairs to this day. I need to set them up and take a proper picture! My dad's are paired with a Sansui G22000.

Not many of these around! Acquired this some time ago as part of my dedicated AR system (with AR 77 t/table, AR93 speakers), but grand plan sort of fizzled & now surplus to requirements. Rated at 40+40 watts into 8 ohms, this vintage piece of kit is in perfect working order. Excellent cosmetic condition. Supports MM and MC phono inputs, CD, tuner, aux. Fold-down front hides tone and tone defeat controls. Neat, elegant & quite heavy unit. Speaker terminals accept banana plugs at rear. Queries welcome.

I remember this range , we had them in the shop .Looked great and sounded very nice in a Nad-ish sort of way .

Good luck with the sale.

Bump. No vintage enthusiasts out there?

This is surplus to my requirements and a very nice amp for the money.

Reasonable offers will not offend.

Good luck! Not lucky enough to have their speakers which my mate has, but I have a subwoofer.

Bump - good match for a vintage system or old AR speakers

I am fond of AR , and own a pair of AR 3a speakers from an earlier generation. I looked at the spec sheet that you posted and also looked some on line, and the good news is that they are 8 ohm speakers, which can be driven by any reasonable amp. (Many AR speakers are 4 ohms which can strain some amps). There is a down side to any acoustic suspension speaker, like the AR, which is low efficiency. The power specs on the Loxjie indicate 40 watts as max power, which might do the trick unless you are listening at very high levels. Unfortunately there are only manufacturers specs on the Sabaj. At first sight, it is more powerful, but in the discussion some people say that there is 10% THD at 100 watts. If this number is correct, I'd recommend against paying $500 for the amp. It isn't clear to me where the 10% number comes from. Perhaps you should repost your question in the Sabaj string? I'd also point your towards https://www.classicspeakerpages.net/ , the home of everything AR and much more. If you search for your speaker, type it as AR12, otherwise you get a null result! There are very good people on that web site.

History of the Adygea Republic

The territory of Adygea has been inhabited since ancient times. Abadzehskaya Paleolithic site is located in Maykop district. Also there are a lot of archaeological sites of Bronze and Iron Ages. Maykop archaeological culture is well known.

A lot of unique items were found during the excavation of the hills near the village of Ulyap in Krasnogvardeysky district. Most of the precious items excavated while Adygea was part of Krasnodar krai and known as “Scythian gold” or “Kuban gold” can be found in museums outside of Adygea.

The indigenous Adyg population’s ancestors are considered to be ancient Meots, Sinds, Aheys, Zikhs, Kasogs, and Kerkets residing in the region. As a result of the Caucasian wars (1763-1864), the majority of the Adygs (Circassians) were exiled to the Ottoman Empire. The rest of the Adygs were settled in the lowlands, on the left bank of the Kuban River.

More Historical Facts…

Adygea was formed on July 27, 1922 as Cherkesskaya (Adygeyskaya) Autonomous Oblast (province) with the center in Krasnodar. From August 24, 1922 till August 13, 1928, it was Adygeyskaya (Cherkesskaya) Autonomous Oblast, and then Adygeyskaya Autonomous Oblast.

From August 2, 1924 till December 28, 1934, it was part of the North Caucasian krai, then, till September 13, 1937, part of Azov-Chernomorsky krai and finally - part of Krasnodar krai.

April 10, 1936, Maykop became the capital of the region. April 28, 1962, Tulsky (now Maikopsky) district of Krasnodar krai was joined to the region. October 5, 1990, Adygeyskaya Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was declared. Since 1992, it is the Republic of Adygea.

In December 1991 - January 1992, deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Adygea were elected. It was the first Parliament in the history of Adygea. In 1993, it was reformed into Legislative Assembly (Khase) and, in 1995, - into State Council - Khase. The Constitution of the Republic of Adygea was adopted by Legislative Assembly - Khase on March 10, 1995.
