In today’s business, the number of new doctorates is less than the average of positions available. This tendency is due to three current realities:
- Many senior faculty members are retiring or will soon retire,
- There is an increase in the number of graduate students seeking business degrees (a trend likely to continue), and finally,
- There remains an insufficient number of doctoral students enrolling in and completing doctoral business programs.
According to a survey conducted by AACSB International , demand for Ph.D.s in business schools rose slightly in 2006 while the overall vacancy rate rose to 6.8 percent. At the same time, the estimated growth in business faculty positions for 2007 was 4.7 percent. Overall, the shortage of business faculty staff members is predicted to reach 2,400 in the coming years.
The staff shortage has resulted in more attractive salaries for faculty at business schools. Combined with additional payment for activities such as summer teaching and research, consulting, sponsored papers, executive program teaching, textbook writing, and presentations, business administrators enjoy healthy incomes.
What Kind of Lifestyle Can a Ph.D. in Business Administration Expect?
Professionals with this type of degree can become economists, C-level executives, financial managers, and educators. Professionals working in traditional areas of executive business leadership will often experience more high-pressure roles within their organizations. University professors, however, enjoy many lifestyle and work privileges that are not typically found in other professions.
Significant intellectual and professional autonomy allows for an atypical degree of freedom in defining workflow and developing academic activity areas. Nine-month contracts in higher education allow professors the freedom to travel and experience alternative teaching, consulting, and research assignments. Tenured faculty in higher education have employment that provides unprecedented job security.
The opportunity to teach high capacity students, undertake research, and develop professional relations with colleagues across the nation and world is unrivaled in most other professions. Being a professor also means searching for knowledge that will make a mark on society and business practice. Through research and teaching, a Ph.D. in Business Administration can significantly affect the industry by influencing organizations to become more efficient, innovative, and profitable. They can also contribute by creating jobs and economic prosperity at the national level.
What Careers Can I Qualify for After Completing a PhD in Business Administration?
Ph.D. programs prepare students to conduct specialized scholarly research. Most Ph.D. in business administration graduates enter careers as university professors, senior researchers, or consultants in business or government.
Business School Professor
A business professor teaches college students various subjects that help them manage or start a business. Business professors give their students the specific knowledge required to earn degrees offered by business programs at institutions of higher learning. Good business professors are naturally analytical, curious, outgoing, patient, and resourceful.
Business Analysts
Business analysts are also called business systems analysts, enterprise analysts, business architects, and functional analysts. These professionals use data to suggest ways that organizations can operate efficiently. They gather and analyze information to develop and investigate potential solutions and system improvements. Business analysts use data modeling techniques to help businesses improve their processes.
What are the Different Types of Doctoral Programs in Business Administration?
The two main degree designations offered by business programs are the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) . In an earlier business education era, the DBA was regarded as providing broad exposure to business subjects geared towards practice. Simultaneously, the Ph.D. was thought to focus more on research in a given business realm. Over the years, the distinction between these two degrees has become blurred at many business schools.
Today, the Ph.D. is more widely available at business schools than the DBA, particularly in the United States. Most Ph.D. programs require full-time enrollment, while it is more common for DBA students to complete the degree on a part-time basis.
Will I need a Graduate Degree and Business Experience to Qualify for a Ph.D. in Business Administration?
While requirements vary among programs, many do not require that doctoral students have a graduate degree in business. There is no specific requirement to have business work experience either. However, students lacking a business background or degree will likely have to take foundational business courses.
What are the Application Requirements for a PhD in Business Administration?
Once you have completed your undergraduate degree or MBA, you point your academic career to a Ph.D. in business administration. But how do you get started? What are business schools looking for? And what can you be doing to prepare yourself for the application process?
Application Process
Step #1: Submit a Graduate Application found on your favorite B-school’s website. After perusing the program that excites you, it’s time to start the application process. Applications have never been easier to find and complete online. Business schools have different prerequisites, but all are looking for the same thing – a quality match between student and program. There might be an application fee, but many doctoral programs waive the requirement .
Step #2: Request your official transcripts be mailed electronically to an email the B-school gives you. Admissions directors want to see who they are dealing with. Those transcripts will reveal your past academic performance, showing that you have made the grade while taking relevant courses to ensure your academic success. Transcripts also show if you need to brush up on any foundational courses that Ph.D. in business administration students have benefited by taking in the past.
Step #3: Look for specific admission requirements and courses. Business schools provide general requirements and some specific needs based on the degree you are pursuing. Rest assured, your favorite program lets you view its admission requirements and courses from a current graduate catalog.
Application Requirements
To be admitted to a top Ph.D. program, applicants must first meet all requirements for graduate admission to the university and the other requirements listed. Ph.D. requirements typically include the following needs:
- You must earn a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. International students must have graduated from a recognized equivalent in a similar or related field.
- Undergrads must have a GPA of at least 3.0 in their last 60 semester credit hours.
- A minimum GMAT exam score is required unless placement scores are waived.
- Submit three recommendation letters from academic or professional sources.
- Complete a personal statement including goals, experiences, scholarly accomplishments, and reasons for pursuing the Ph.D. You may include possible research questions or topics of interest.
- A current resume or curriculum vitae .
Admission decisions for Ph.D. programs are made by college-level admissions committees in consultation with the respective faculty in each area of concentration. Committee members make determinations concerning the probability of a student’s projected success. Ph.D. applicants need to provide materials that will help make those decisions.
Affordability of Top Ph.D. in Business Administration Programs
Most of the top programs in our ranking offer tuition waivers that cover all or most of the Ph.D. program. These Ph.D.s are full-time, residential programs with strict guidelines on no outside employment. Because of this, many schools additionally offer yearly stipends to offset their students’ living expenses while in the program.
School | Fully Funded Tuition | Stipend | Website |
---|---|---|---|
Stanford University | ✔️ | ✔️ | |
Harvard University | ✔️ | ✔️ | |
University of Chicago | ✔️ | ✔️ | |
Northwestern University | ✔️ | ✔️ | |
Columbia University | ✔️ | ✔️ |
If you are not enrolled in a program with a tuition waiver and stipend, you might be wondering about how to pay for your program. Here are some factors to consider in making a Ph.D. in business administration and comparing costs:
- Tuition Cost -Tuition costs for Ph.D. degrees run the spectrum. Some students get funding from employers, scholarships, and other sources of support. Tuition varies depending on whether students choose on-campus programs or online Ph.D. programs, public or private institutions, and whether the student qualifies as a resident.
- Program Fees -Aside from tuition rates, Ph.D. students pay fees for books and other course-related items. Extra expenses associated with a graduate program can include computers, technical support, high-speed Internet, and other resources. Read all of the tuition information a business school gives. Some business schools offer programs to cover fees and some even hand out free devices to their students.
- Accommodation -Housing for Ph.D. students can be expensive. The cost of living ranges based on where you attend business school. Factor in the costs of living ranging from $20,000 to more per year .
- Study materials and resources -Take note that there will be some extra costs for study materials. Since many Ph.D.s divide the experience between two years of initial coursework and three years of dissertation. Your expenses will fluctuate annually.
- Parking -On-campus students must take paying for parking into consideration. An on-campus parking permit can cost Ph.D. students between $50 and $2,500 annually .
How do I Know What Doctoral Program to Select?
Personal considerations, including geographical location and educational preferences in a specialized field of interest, are criteria that will help narrow the range of possibilities. One primary concern is whether a particular business school has staff who specialize in the prospective student’s study area.
Students may assume that all schools offer similar types of emphases and pay relatively no attention to the faculty’s specific research interests. This may cause unfortunate surprises once a student enrolls in a doctoral program.
Even among leading postgraduate programs at the nation’s top research universities, there are significant differences in what areas schools have national and international recognition for teaching and research. Potential students should research faculty interest areas at all schools being considered.
What Role do Accreditations and Rankings Play in Considering a Ph.D.?
Publications that offer rankings of business schools should be viewed with an understanding of their goals and priorities. All rankings are subjective to each entity’s priorities and goals. Some focus on cost, some on college support, some on peer review, and some on student reviews. Ranking exposure should never substitute a student’s own research and investigation, but only to aid as a tool.
A crucial selection factor to consider is accreditation. Accreditation is a viable measure indicating that knowledgeable peers from a neutral institution have determined that a school’s program meets accreditation standards for:
- Faculty composition,
- Intellectual contributions,
- Curriculum content, and
- Instructional resources.
Most non-profit colleges and universities in the nation hold institutional accreditation conferred by regional accrediting agencies. Within the field of business, separate specialized accrediting agencies grant business accreditation to business schools or individual business programs. Among the top is AACSB . Selecting a business school accredited by AACSB is an assurance that the institution provides a high-quality education.
What is the Experience of Pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Administration Like?
Unlike bachelor’s or master’s-level work, where highly structured learning and individual courses with many different instructors are the norms, doctoral education places a higher premium on self-directed learning and closer relationships with fewer faculty members in a particular area of specialization. On average, Ph.D. programs will take five to six years to complete and involve the intense study of academic journal articles and original research writings. Doctoral students often forge close friendships with faculty mentors. These mentors work closely with students to:
- Define a course of study,
- Prepare for qualifying exams,
- Provide guidance in the dissertation process, and
- Help with pursuing their first faculty position.

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.
Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.
How do I know which program is right for me?
There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.
The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has four areas of study: Accounting and Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program
The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.
The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research
The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

The newly introduced categories in 2024 include 50 state public universities, with an additional 50 in the rank band of 51-100. However, only three institutions are ranked in the open universities and skill universities categories. For innovation institutions, 10 institutions are ranked, along with an additional 40 in rank bands of 11-50.
The NIRF Team employs triangulation methods to identify and correct data issues, consulting with institutions to maintain data integrity. This focus on accuracy has minimized data inflation, enabling the NIRF Team to refine ranking parameters and metrics. Third-party sources like Scopus, Web of Science, and Derwent Innovation provide additional data on publications, citations, and patents, which are shared with institutions for transparency.
The ranking framework evaluates institutions based on five key parameters: Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR). Publicly funded institutions, including CFTIs and centrally funded universities, continue to dominate the top ranks across most categories, but state and privately funded institutions also feature prominently in the top 100 across various domains.

Rice mba programs land in the top 5 of princeton review’s best business school rankings.
MBA programs from Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business have been ranked in the top five of The Princeton Review’s Best Business Schools rankings for 2024. The university ranked No. 5 on the Best MBA for Finance list, rating in the top 10 for the seventh consecutive year. Rice’s online MBA landed at No. 4 on the list of Top 50 Online MBA Programs , marking the program’s third straight year in the top five.
Rice was the only university in Texas to be ranked in the top 10 in both of these categories.
“These rankings are indicative of the high-quality education offered through all of our MBA programs. Students studying finance at Rice Business are taught by faculty whose research and expertise enhances core classes and hard skills, so students are not just prepared to be successful in their careers, but they are also prepared to think critically about their roles and to lead in their industry,” said Peter Rodriguez, dean of Rice Business. “These rankings are also indicative of our broader approach: offering students flexibility in their pursuit of an MBA, while retaining the experience of studying with world-class faculty — no matter what program they choose.”
Rice also achieved high rankings in other specialty categories. It climbed into the top 10 for having the Greatest Resources for Women , ranking No. 8. In addition, the university ranked No. 10 for having the Greatest Resources for Minority Students .
The Princeton Review’s 2024 business school rankings are uniquely based on data the company gathers from its surveys of administrators at 409 business schools as well as surveys of 32,200 students enrolled in the schools’ MBA programs.
“The schools that made our list for 2024 all have impressive individual distinctions,” said Rob Franek, The Princeton Review’s editor-in-chief. “What they share are three characteristics that broadly informed our criteria for these rankings: outstanding academics, robust experiential learning components and excellent career services. Equally impressive to us — and probably to prospective applicants — is that every one of our best b-schools for 2024 garnered highly favorable ratings among its MBA students we surveyed.”
The complete ranking lists are posted at www.princetonreview.com/best-business-schools , along with The Princeton Review’s in-depth profiles of the schools and its ratings of the schools on topics from admissions selectivity to academic experience.

Accenture consultants work in the Chicago office overlooking the city's skyline
It’s often been said that the only constant in life—and in business—is change. And while this can be unsettling for companies, change has consistently led to growth for the management consulting industry. Whether companies are seeking to downsize, expand, rebrand or enhance AI capabilities, businesses often need help from external advisors, particularly those with highly technical skills or niche expertise. As a result, consultants have never been busier.
Alicia Pittman, managing director, senior partner and global people chair at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), says that many businesses coming out of turbulent times post pandemic are seeking large-scale change. “A lot of clients are looking soup to nuts, and asking, ‘How do we accelerate this company to the next chapter?’”
The answer, according to Pittman, is to join forces with the right consulting team. In the case of BCG, when their consultants take on a project, they don’t just drop in, make some fixes and leave. Rather, the consultants take time listening to the needs of their clients, customizing strategies together, and guiding executives and staff on how to implement them. BCG’s philosophy, says Pittman: “We don’t work on clients, we work with clients.”
This approach has apparently served BCG well; for the third straight year it ranked as one of the most recommended firms in our list of the World’s Best Management Consulting Firms . The ranking, created in partnership with market research firm Statista , is based on three national surveys of consultants (partners and managers at consulting firms) and clients (executives) in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany; as well as a global survey of 8,500 consultants and clients in 29 countries across all continents.
Survey respondents were asked which consulting firms they would recommend within 13 industries (such as construction and healthcare) and 14 functional areas (such as digital transformation and organization management), for a total of 27 categories; those with the most recommendations were included in our list and awarded a star rating. Firms in the top 10% (very frequently recommended) received 5 stars, firms between the top 10% and 40% (frequently recommended) received 4 stars, and all others with a sufficient number of recommendations received 3 stars.
In addition to the consulting firms, survey respondents were also able to recommend consulting networks, which aggregate large numbers of independent consultants and facilitate their connection with potential clients. Consulting networks were rated using the same method used to rate consulting firms.
Ultimately, a total of 224 management consulting firms and nine consulting networks made this third annual list. (For more on the methodology, see below.)
Eight firms on our list earned stars in all 27 categories, and they were the same top performers as last year. But this year, Accenture led that pack—bumping McKinsey & Company from the head of the list—with Accenture receiving 26 5-star ratings and one 4-star rating, while McKinsey received 24 5-star ratings and three 4-star ratings. For the second year in a row, Deloitte earned 25 5-star ratings and two 4-star ratings. The other five firms that received stars in all 27 categories (specifically, 4- and 5-star ratings) were Boston Consulting Group (BCG) , Bain & Company , KPMG , PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and EY .
One of the top priorities for clients across every industry this year, says Muqsit Ashraf, group chief executive of Accenture Strategy, is to reinvent their organization’s generative AI, “impacting everyone from the C-suite to frontline workers.” To do this, Accenture teams advise companies on “building a digital core, transforming processes end to end, rethinking talent strategies, embedding responsible AI principles, and developing change management capabilities,” he says.
Deloitte's global headquarters in London, England
Another major focus for businesses around the world is sustainability, says Tamzen Isacsson, CEO of the Management Consultancies Association , a trade organization in the UK. Thus, consulting firms are not only guiding clients on sustainable strategies for their businesses, the consultants themselves are also walking the (carbon-free) walk. “The consulting industry previously had a big carbon footprint in terms of travel,” says Isacsson. Post pandemic, however, consultants have radically revamped the way they work with clients, often traveling much less and instead offering a blend of remote time and face-to-face time.
New norms for remote and digital work arrangements have also made it easier for businesses to work with expert consultants in any country—and there are a growing number of consulting networks facilitating these connections. One such network, Malt —which received high marks in our rankings—has built an online community of more than 500,000 freelance consultants and more than 70,000 clients. The AI-powered platform serves as a matchmaker of sorts, allowing consultants to find projects that suit their skills and interests while offering clients the ability to find consultants with the specific expertise needed.
Malt , which operates in eight countries in Europe and the United Arab Emirates, vets the freelancers, makes sure they are compliant with tax regulations and certified to work where the client is located, and provides tools that help both consultants and clients find matches. Pascal Schäfer, Malt’s head of freelance community and project partnering, says that clients usually come to the platform knowing exactly what they are looking for, and it’s often a consultant with very specific expertise that most companies would not employ on staff. “We can help them to find someone with exactly that skillset or that combination of experience in the country they need,” he says.
“The platform suggests potential candidates based on their experience and hard skills but then we add the human touch,” says Schäfer, noting that Malt proposes three to five candidates to the client—also considering interpersonal skills and price—and the client can choose which candidates they’d like to meet. Malt arranges a call for both parties to talk on their own or with a Malt advisor. When a match is made, clients then hire and pay the consultant through the platform, providing security and stability for all involved.

Methodology
The World’s Best Consulting Firms 2024, created in partnership with market research firm Statista , is based on three national surveys of consultants (partners and managers at consulting firms) and clients (executives) in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany; as well as a global survey of 8,500 consultants and clients in 29 countries across all continents. Survey respondents were asked which consulting firms they would recommend; firms were eligible if they had active offices in at least three of the following regions: Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, Europe, the Middle East, North America and South America.
The firms were recommended within 13 industries (such as technology, financial services and healthcare) and 14 functional areas (such as M&A, marketing and sustainability); those with the most recommendations were included in our list and awarded a star rating.
The networks enable consultants to match with projects that suit their skills and interests, while affording clients the ability to match with consultants offering the specific expertise needed. For this list, the method used to rate consulting firms was also used to rate consulting networks.
Ultimately, a total of 224 management consulting firms and nine consulting networks made the list.

The Top International Relations Schools of 2024, Ranked
An insider’s guide to the world’s best programs—for both policy and academic careers.
The Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) Project at William & Mary’s Global Research Institute has long partnered with Foreign Policy to create a reputational ranking of academic programs in international relations. Over the past two decades, our process has remained simple and consistent: We ask IR professionals what they think are the five best places to study for an undergraduate, terminal master’s, and doctoral degree.
In our most recent survey on the topic, conducted from October 2022 to January 2023, we received responses from 979 IR scholars across the United States, 294 staff affiliated with U.S. think tanks, and 291 policymakers who worked in the U.S. government during the George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations. For the first time, we also asked respondents which Ph.D. programs are best for a student interested in a policy career, rather than an academic one. As the number of tenure-track positions in universities declines and the demand for expertise within the policy community increases , this question is more relevant today than ever before.

These results should look familiar to those who follow national undergraduate rankings. Ivy League schools, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, and a few large public universities were favored across the board. But a handful of outliers punched well above their weight: Georgetown University, American University, George Washington University, Tufts University, and William & Mary all placed much higher here compared with their rankings in U.S. News & World Report , widely considered the most influential college ranking in the United States. In fact, Georgetown stands out as the top undergraduate choice among policymakers and think tank staff.

Master’s Programs
For master’s students hoping to pursue a policy career, all three groups we surveyed expressed a preference for programs on the East Coast. Only a few schools located west of the Rocky Mountains made the top 20 in each list. Respondents also highlighted several options outside the United States in the top 20: IR faculty included four international programs, while policymakers included five—all located in Europe—and think tankers included eight, one of which is in Asia.
Ph.D. Programs for Academics
IR faculty members’ rankings of Ph.D. programs have proved remarkably stable over the years. Between our 2017 survey and our most recent one, no top 15 program has moved more than one spot in either direction; in fact, most held the same rank. Additionally, policymakers and think tank staff appeared to value academic Ph.D. programs located in Washington, D.C., and outside the United States much more than U.S.-based IR scholars did.
Ph.D. Programs for Policymakers
When asked about doctoral students pursuing a policy career, all three groups we surveyed showed a preference for institutions with strong connections to Washington. Schools such as George Washington University, Georgetown University, and American University are ranked higher for students pursuing policy careers than for those hoping to enter academia. Conversely, institutions such as the University of Chicago and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are ranked lower for policy careers than academic ones. This shift highlights the importance of proximity to policy centers and the availability of practical engagement opportunities in shaping perceptions of a program’s value for a policy-oriented career in IR.
Advice to Prospective Students
Prospective students would do well to explore the specific features of various programs rather than focusing solely on a broad reputational ranking, which tells us little about a program’s regional, functional, or methodological strengths. For example, both academic and policymaker respondents who specialize in international political economy and/or trade policy ranked the London School of Economics master’s program higher than respondents who focus on security policy. Similarly, academics who specialize in the study of Latin America ranked the University of California, Berkeley Ph.D. program higher for an academic career than their non-Latin Americanist colleagues.
Still, prospective students should keep in mind that reputation matters. Although reputation may be an imperfect indicator of quality, it is a strong indicator of perceived quality within the field. A program’s standing can have conscious and unconscious effects on graduate school admissions committees, scholarship committees, and hiring managers in the public, private, and higher education sectors. For this reason, our ranking provides a systematic measure of these perceptions to assist prospective students in making informed choices as they plan for their future.
