Since the Department of Psychology was founded in 1950, it has carried on a distinguished programme of research, teaching and clinical practice, with a long-standing link with the  South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. In 2004, the psychology sections of Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine merged with the Department, creating one of the world’s largest groupings of clinical and health psychologists. Today, Psychology is one of the largest departments in the IoPPN.

About the Faculty

The IoPPN is a Faculty of King's College London and the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease.

About the role

The primary purpose of this role is to contribute to the advancement of research on anxiety interventions by developing and implementing experimental tasks, under the guidance of supervisors. The role involves recruiting and obtaining consent from volunteers with high anxiety levels, ensuring the study meets the needs of those with lived experience of anxiety, and tailoring materials for diverse ethnic and socio-demographic backgrounds. The successful applicant will run experiments, manage clinical risk, conduct high-quality research, and maintain data integrity and security. Additionally, they will write reports, perform data entry, attend research and supervision meetings, conduct interviews, and support participants in completing the research protocol.

There are two positions available, both will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contracts for 3 years.

At the IoPPN, our staff and students work to transform care for people who are affected by mental health and neurological conditions, through world-class research, education and training, and to serve our communities locally and globally. We are at the forefront of global mental health research and through our partnerships foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care around the world. The IoPPN is a leading centre for mental health and neuroscience research in Europe. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2023).

The Department of Psychology at the IoPPN includes one of the world’s largest groupings of clinical and health psychologists through its close links with King’s Health Partners institutions (KCH, GSTT, SLaM NHS Trusts). The Department’s research interests span a wide range of mental health disorders and physical health problems, including anxiety disorders, trauma, somatoform disorders, pain, psychosis, depression, antisocial personality, disorders in childhood and adolescence, emotion and personality, and neurodegeneration.

About the role

You will assist in the preparation and running of multiple studies within a programme of transdiagnostic research into anhedonia which is funded by Wellcome and led by Dr Clem Edwards (Research Clinical Psychologist/Wellcome ECA Fellow) who you will report to. You will be involved in developing study documents and recruitment materials, identifying and recruiting participants across clinical and non-clinical groups, conducting research assessments using digital technology methods (smartphones and virtual reality), and managing large datasets.  

You will work closely with the lived experience advisory panel who provide input into this research programme. This involves working with them creatively to ensure their voices are heard, as well as providing logistical and administrative support for their involvement.

This research programme will give you opportunities to innovate and contribute to the design of novel research studies. There will also be opportunities to conduct analysis, interpretation and write-up results for publications and other dissemination pathways.  There will be the chance to shape how we deliver work in public engagement which communicates effectively about the research to a range of audiences.

In addition, you will receive training in conducting person-centred clinical assessments with people with psychosis and depression. Dr Edwards is a member of the KCL Virtual Reality Lab, and you will learn about the exciting applications of this technology in mental health. Alongside the professional development opportunities in clinical research within Dr Edwards’ research team there are also trailblazing projects in the wider Psychological Approaches to Psychosis theme including world-leading clinical trials and implementation studies.

The post holder will be based at the IoPPN, Denmark Hill, London.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 30th June 2027.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • An undergraduate degree in psychology or neuroscience.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills incorporating a flexible approach to work and ability to use initiative and problem-solve. 
  • High quality written and oral communication skills which can be adapted to a range of audiences including academic meetings and clinical populations.
  • Experience working with people experiencing mental health challenges in a position of responsibility.
  • An understanding of working with difference and diversity in a mental health setting.
  • Able to demonstrate high quality teamwork skills, including empathy and resilience.
  • Able to demonstrate attention to detail and an organised approach to recording, storing and managing data acquired.
  • An understanding of ethical standards in research and issues of confidentiality and data protection.

Desirable criteria

  • MSc in health-related discipline or science.
  •  Experience of working with people experiencing mental health challenges, as research participants and/or lived experience experts.
  • Interest in developing an academic or research career
  • Interest in technology and its applications in mental health.
  • Previous experience using R for statistical analysis.

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a research assistant within the Persistent Physical Symptoms Service, Maudsley Hospital. We are seeking an enthusiastic person to be part of our internationally recognised service.

You will work as part of a clinically experienced multidisciplinary team that includes Psychiatrists, Therapists and a Physiotherapist.

The post holder will be vital in supporting the clinical team with any research or day to day activities that are delegated to them.

In this role, the post holder will be responsible for administering psychological measures, data management duties, data analysis, as well as writing up of results.

We are an internationally recognised service providing assessment and evidence-based treatment for persistent physical symptoms (PPS). Our expertise includes chronic symptoms in long term conditions and medically unexplained symptoms. We treat a range of conditions including:

Persistent physical symptoms

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Chronic physical symptoms and disability in long term conditions

Fibromyalgia

Irritable bowel syndrome

Non-cardiac chest pain

Dysfunctional breathing

Chronic pain

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a computerised database of patient's referral details, subsequent processing and presentation of information. They will co-ordinate responses to requests for information both internally and externally and will be responsible for the analysis of data for the unit and trust purposes, using SPSS.

They will oversee the collection and analysis of data in relation to various research projects being undertaken in the unit with assistance from senior members of the team, and contribute to writing up scientific papers related to research carried out in the unit. The post holder will also provide active administrative assistance in the clinical research aims of the unit.

The post holder will be required to interact appropriately with research participants, service users, their carers and relatives, with the ability to convey the goals of the research in a friendly manner. They will also participate in and contribute towards multi-disciplinary meetings within the unit, as well as liaising with health professionals outside of the research team as required.

The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring that study recruitment targets are met and that accurate data collection records are maintained.

The Persistent Physical Symptoms Service is made up of a multi-disciplinary team of Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Psychotherapists and Physiotherapists, with the support of the Service Administrators. The service is currently based at Mapother House within the Maudsley Hospital at Denmark Hill, but is due to move offices within the Maudsley Hospital site.

The post holder will be part of the Persistent Physical Symptoms Research and Treatment service, and will be vital in supporting the clinical team with any research or day to day activities that are delegated to them.

  • FACTS AND FIGURES

At South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust we provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK. We also provide substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Our 4,600 staff serves a local population of 1.3 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. We provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and we treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Croydon.   • ORGANISATIONAL POSITION

The post holder will be line managed by the PPS Research & Treatment Unit Lead Psychotherapist/Service Manager, Clare Grey and supervised by the Clinical Lead, Prof Trudie Chalder.
