Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) is a stage thespian who announces his retirement after achieving a lot of popularity and making good enough money. This decision doesn’t go well with his wife (Ramya Krishna) and his friend Chakri (Brahmanandam). Raghava Rao has a daughter (Shivathmika Rajasekhar) and a son (Adarsh Balakrishna). On the night of his retirement, he gives away his house property to his married son and remaining cash/assets to his unmarried daughter. Raghava’s daughter-in-law (Anasuya) wants to build a 10-storied apartment building so that they can make a lot of money. His daughter falls in love with a musician (Rahul Sipligunj). Rest of the story is about what happens to Raghava Rao and his wife who are full of self-pride when their kids take unfavorable decisions.
This film is an official remake of 2016 Marathi classic titled ‘Nata Samrat’. Nana Patekar played the title role. Though it has the backdrop of stage plays, the core story revolves around parents and children relationship which is a universal emotion. Maharashtra is known for stage play culture even today, Krishna Vamsi has done a remake for the first time in his career. I haven’t seen the original. Krishna Vamsi has succeeded in getting emotions right. And extracted great performances from everybody. This film is narrated in a flashback format where kids are searching for the missing parents. The screenplay sustains our interest. The character of Rangamarthanda is very realistic. Those people who achieve pinnacle of success have a pride factor in-built in their personality and they tend to be very frank in their conversations/meetings with outsiders. Basically they lack diplomacy. This aspect puts Ranga Marthanda character in a tight spot in the 2nd half. Krishna Vamsi has made this film with a lot of conviction and it's evident in the final output.
Music by maestro Ilayaraja is an asset. The song “Puvvai Virise Pranam” he rendered is very efficiently used in highly emotional scenes involving Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishna. Cinematography by Raj K Nalli is very good. Dialogues by Akella Siva Prasad deserve special mention. Most of the dialogues are heart touching and philosophical. Liked the dialogue “cheppulu - kaallu” the way it was written. Also the final dialogue - Smasana Vasthantham. Production design is very apt. Lyrics by Sirivennela (Puvvai Virise) are beautifully written. Production values are decent.
Rangamarthanda is a film that should be watched with heart. It’s a meaningful film that delves into the universal emotion of parents-children relationship when parents get older and are left with no penny. Krishna Vamsi should be appreciated for being true to the story/genre and bringing out emotions that touch our hearts. This film is not perfect. There are certain scenes that appear forced. There are certain scenes where monotony seeps in. Story of the film is predictable. But, honest direction and performances overshadow those flaws to deliver a heart-touching film that should be watched both by children and parents irrespective of their ages.

Rangamarthanda movie review: emotionally over-the-top.
'Rangamarthanda' was released in theatres. It is presented by Mythri Movie Makers.
Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) gets into a fight with his son (Adarsh Balakrishna) and daughter-in-law ( Anasuya Bharadwaj ) after he retires as a stage artist. His wife (Ramya Krishna) supports his emotional decisions. His friend (Brahmanandam) too sympathizes with him. Meanwhile, his daughter (Shivathmika Rajasekhar) has a role in his family issues.
At the outset, Megastar Chiranjeevi delivers a 'shayari' titled 'Nenoka Natudini', a long rendition meant to be a tribute to acting greats. The images of Telugu actors playing on the screen range from those of Vishwa Vikyata Nata Saarvabowma NT Rama Rao to Vijaya Krishna Naresh (don't bother to Google, we are talking about VK Naresh). The presentation may be lacklustre, but the intent is to cater to all sections of Telugu audiences, including the fans of Gummadi and JV Somayajulu. This is the best part of a drama film manifested as a hyper-emotional, theatrical family drama while being a steadfast Dasari Narayana Rao-style old-school tale.
The first 10-15 minutes are enough proof that Krishna Vamsi has long become a laggard by today's standards in terms of execution. The film opens with a tastelessly shot street play involving aspiring film actor Siddharth ( Ali Reza ). Then follows a police station scene that feels artificial. Then we see the family members of Raghava Rao getting anxious in an unnatural way. These portions, to make the matters worse, are riddled with jarring transitions.
Then there is the character Raghava Rao, played by Prakash Raj, who is shown as a former great who has lost his glory because his own family members couldn't understand his 24/7 urge to redefine their lives. Much as the film attempts to build a mystique around him, the predictability of the nature of conflict strips the first act of its potency. Raghava Rao is a drunkard who looks indifferent in one scene, hyper-active in another scene, bumbling in the next, and comes across as an innocent clown in yet another scene. He is somewhat endearing when he becomes a language activist, though.
While the film projects Prakash Raj 's character as a victim, he is actually an elder who is incapable of understanding the consequences of his impulsive speech and action. He is unapologetically belligerent, and even when he repents, he acts like he is a wronged saviour, not a genuinely emotional dad. He and his wife are perfect humans who think their own daughter doesn't deserve a forgival.
After watching the movie, this reviewer wondered what a sequel to 'Rangamarthanda' would look like. What if Raghava Rao's daughter (Shivathmika Rajasekhar) were to sit across the table and repent for what she did. Watch both 'Rangamarthanda' and 'Balagam'. You will realize that the character that needs to grow up is not the daughter but the father. It's the father's emotional inability to forgive his daughter's one-off mistake that is responsible for his misery. In the world of 'Balagam', it is he who would be shown as the shallow person who needs to repent.
The one character that works to an extent is Brahmanandam . His death talk and his occasional forays into philosophical renditions notwithstanding, his acting spares his character of pretense. When Brahmi is around, the film stops looking prententious.
Rangamarthanda is too over-the-top for its own good.

Nearly after 5 years, creative director Krishna Vamsi is back with ‘Rangamarthanda’, a very important film for him that is a remake of the much acclaimed and successful Marathi movie, ‘Natasamrat’. Let’s find out how effectively he handled this remake.
A Veteran Thespian, Raghava Rao (Prakash Raj) retires from his theatre acting and wishes to spend some time with his family. He and his friend Chakri (Brahmanandam) both used to be much-revered stage actors who find themselves struggling to fit amidst the dramatic life outside the theatre, rest of the movie depicts the life journey of Raghava Rao and his wife ‘Raajugaaru’ (Ramya Krishna) going through the hurdles because of their son and daughter.
Actors performances :
Prakash Raj was in fine form in the skin of a retired stage actor, especially in the second half, his performance was a great achievement, to say the least. Ramya Krishna as ‘Raajugaaru’ was too adorable and admirable, all her scenes came out really well, and thanks to her panache at subtle acting, we feel for this lady with all our hearts. The most surprising of all is Brahmanandam’s performance as ‘Chakri’, the legendary comedian who gives a legendary performance despite with limited screen presence, he evokes a sea of emotions leaving a lump in our throats. We can see a never before brahmanandam in Rangamarthanda who will make people cry.
Writing and Direction :
We know how unique Krishna Vamsi used to be in bringing human emotions quite powerfully onto the screen. He used to make his artists perform so beautifully that even the melodramatic scenes would fascinate us. ‘Rangamaarthanda’ almost did bring back that vintage Krishna Vamsi as a director on extracting superb performances from leads. However, the writing part by Akella Shivaprasad in terms of dialogues is very good but in adapting the Marathi movie to Telugu cinematic sensibilities has gone for a toss a bit. The first half kinda bores the audience, many dramatic things happen but except for one or two none of those hit us with strong emotions, the drama looks forced with cliched scenes and on-the-nose messages. One good change they made in the first half compared to original is the witty dialogues by brahmi at every possible scene which made the boring first half a bit better. it’s only during the second half that the movie redeems itself, the writing gets better, the emotions start to elevate, the ever-loving dynamics between Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishna characters warm our hearts, and the scenes between his and Brahmanandam characters bound to tug at your heartstrings.
Other Technicalities :
The cinematography by Raj K Nalli could have been better. The visuals seem to lack proper focus on the actors, except for theatre shots, his work felt amateurish. The music by Ilaiyaraaja is decent, a couple of songs say ‘Dhamadi Chemanthi’ and ‘Poovai Virise Pranam’ were good to watch on screen, and the background score was quite forgettable. Editing by Pavan was bad in the first half and feels decent in the second half.
Performances From Lead Cast
Emotional Moments In Second Half
Final word : Overall, ‘Rangamaarthaandaa’ is a decent remake anchored by some amazing performances.
