The Top 10 Characteristics of Problem Solvers

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be natural born problem solvers? Look closer, and you’ll discover that problem solving is more a skill than a gift. Effective problem solvers share ten common characteristics.

1. They have an “attitude”!

Simply expressed, effective problem solvers invariably see problems as opportunities, a chance to learn something new, to grow, to succeed where others have failed, or to prove that “it can be done”.  Underlying these attitudes is a deeply held conviction that, with adequate preparation, the right answer will come.

2. They re-define the problem.

Problem solving is a primary consulting skill. Seasoned consultants know that, very often, the initial definition of the problem (by the client) is incorrect or incomplete. They learn to discount statements such as, “Obviously, the problem is that …” and follow their own leadings, but…

3. They have a system.

Perhaps the most common model is the old consulting acronym: DACR/S in which the letters stand for Describe, Analyze, Conclude, and Recommend/Solve. As with many formulas, its usefulness stems from the step-by-step approach it represents. Effective problem solvers take the steps in order and apply them literally. For example, in describing the problem (the first step), they strenuously avoid making premature judgments or ruling out possibilities. In analyzing the information, they are careful that their own prejudices do not interfere. In developing conclusions, they are aware of the need to test them thoroughly. Finally, most astute problem solvers recognize that there is almost always more than one solution, so they develop several alternatives from which to choose.

4. They avoid the experience trap.

The world is becoming increasingly non-linear. Things happen in pairs, triads, and groups and often don’t follow traditional lines from past to present and cause to effect. In such an environment, where synchronicity and simultaneity rather than linearity prevails, past experience must be taken with a grain of salt. Seasoned problem solvers know the pitfalls of relying on what worked in the past as a guide to what will work in the future. They learn to expect the unexpected, illogical, and non-linear.

5. They consider every position as though it were their own.

For effective problem solvers, standing in the other person’s shoes is more than a cute saying. It’s a fundamental way of looking at the problem from every perspective. This ability to shift perspectives quickly and easily is a key characteristic of effective problem solvers. As one especially capable consultant put it, “I take the other fellow’s position, and then I expand upon it until I understand it better than he does”.

6. They recognize conflict as often a prerequisite to solution.

When the stakes are high in a problem situation, the parties are often reluctant to show their hands and cautious about giving away too much. In such instances, managed conflict can be an effective tool for flushing out the real facts of a situation.

7. They listen to their intuition.

Somewhere during the latter stages of the fact-finding (description) process, effective problem solvers experience what can best be called, “inklings”-gut-level feelings about the situation. When this happens, they listen, hypothesize, test and re-test. They realize that, while intuition may be partially innate, effective intuition is overwhelmingly a developed faculty-and they work to develop it!

8. They invariably go beyond “solving the problem”.

On a time scale, just solving the problem at hand brings you to the present, to a point you might call, ground-zero. Truly effective problem solvers push further. They go beyond simply solving the problem to discover the underlying opportunities that often lie concealed within the intricacies of the situation. Implicit in this approach is the premise that every problem is an opportunity in disguise.

9. They seek permanent solutions.

Permanent, as opposed to band-aid solutions, has two characteristics: (1) they address all aspects of the problem, and (2) they are win/win in that they offer acceptable benefits to all parties involved.  Symptomatic problem solving, like bad surgery or dentistry, leaves part of the decay untouched, with the result that, over time, it festers and erupts.  Just for the record, a permanent solution is one that STAYS solved and doesn’t come back to bite you.

10. They gain agreement and commitment from the parties involved.

It’s easy, in the heady rush of finding “the answer” to a problem, to fail to gain agreement and commitment on the part of everyone involved. For effective problem solvers, just “going along” via tacit agreement isn’t enough. There must be explicit statements from all parties that they concur and are willing to commit to the solution. Agreement and concurrence really constitute a third characteristic of the “permanent” solution discussed above, but they are so often ignored that it is important that they be viewed separately.

10 Characteristics of Good Problem Solvers

Good problem solvers are good thinkers. They have less drama and problems to begin with and don't get overly emotional when faced with a problem. They usually see problems as challenges and life experiences and try to stand above them, objectively.

Good problem solvers use a combination of intuition and logic to come up with their solutions. Intuition has more to do with the emotional and instinctive side of us and logic is more related to our cognition and thinking. Good problem solvers use both of these forces to get as much information as they can to come up with the best possible solution. In addition, they are reasonably open minded but logically skeptical.

Some of the general characteristics of good problem solvers are:

1. They don't need to be right all the time: They focus on finding the right solution rather than wanting to prove they are right at all costs.

2. They go beyond their own conditioning: They go beyond a fixated mind set and open up to new ways of thinking and can explore options.

3. They look for opportunity within the problem: They see problems as challenges and try to learn from them.

4. They know the difference between complex and simple thinking: They know when to do a systematic and complex thinking and when to go through short cuts and find an easy solution.

5. They have clear definition of what the problem is: They can specifically identity the problem.

6. They use the power of words to connect with people: They are socially well developed and find ways to connect with people and try to find happy-middle solutions.

7. They don't create problems for others: They understand that to have their problem solved they can't create problems for others. Good problems solvers who create fair solutions make a conscious effort not to harm others for a self-interest intention. They know such acts will have long term consequences even if the problem is temporarily solved.

8. They do prevention more than intervention: Good problem solvers have a number of skills to prevent problems from happening in the first place. They usually face less drama, conflict, and stressful situations since they have clear boundaries, don't let their rights violated and do not violate other people's rights. They are more of a positive thinker so naturally they are surrounded with more positivity and have more energy to be productive.

9. They explore their options: They see more than one solution to a problem and find new and productive ways to deal with new problems as they arise. They also have a backup plan if the first solution does not work and can ask for support and advise when needed.

10. They have reasonable expectations: Good problem solvers have reasonable expectations as to what the solution would be. They understand that there are many elements effecting a situation and that idealistic ways of thinking and going about solving a problem will be counterproductive.

At the end, good problem solvers do not have too many irrational fears when dealing with problems. They can visualize the worst case scenario, work their way out of it and let go of the fear attached to it. Fear can make your logic and intuition shady and your decisions unproductive.

Read mentor text picture books to teach problem and solution text structure. Understanding the problem and solution story structures improves comprehension and helps readers make informed predictions. (As well as helping children see the creative possibilities in problem-solving!)

Of course, almost all stories have a problem and a solution –with the exception of a concept book. So really, you can search out problem and solution examples in any book, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction.

When children learn what to expect in a problem and solution story, not only will they be able to predict solutions, but they will also be better able to write their own problem-solution stories. I started teaching this early to my young kids, well before they were school-age because we want our children to become problem solvers. That is an important life skill!

While many picture books model the narrative story structure of problem and solution, these are my favorites to use with kids both at home and in the classroom.

Pigeon P.I.  by Meg McLaren What a unique and delightful mystery story! A little canary asks Pigeon P.I. (private investigator) to help her find her missing friends. Then the canary goes missing, too. It’s up to Pigeon to solve the missing bird mystery. The author writes in the style of the old detective shows– punchy with short sentences. The illustrator captures the details, giving kids clues to notice as they read.

One Word from Sophia  by Jim Averbeck, illustrated by Yasmeen Ismail This picture book is a great way to teach kids summarizing and word choice as well as a problem-solution text structure! Sophia really wants a pet giraffe for her birthday. As a result, she sets out to convince her family, starting with her mother, a judge. However, Mother says that Sophia’s argument is too verbose. As a result, Sophie tries fewer words with Father. But he says her presentation is too effusive. Sophia continues with each family member until she reaches her last-ditch attempt and says the one word that works: PLEASE.

No Boring Stories!  by Julie Falatko, illustrated by Charles Santoso When a cute little bunny tries to join a group of animal storytellers (mole, weevil, crab, and babirusa), the group doesn’t want to add her to their brainstorming group. As the animals continue their story plans with relatable characters, an inciting incident, rising action, climax, and…. Only the group gets stuck with the ending. That’s when bunny reveals that she likes making up weird (not boring) stories. The group realizes that the bunny has the perfect ending idea. That Fruit Is Mine!  by Anuska Allepuz This is a charming problem and solution story about learning to share and the power of working together. You’ll crack up watching the elephants’ many failed attempts to get delicious-looking fruit off a tree while simultaneously watching a tiny group of mice work together to get the yummy fruit, too. Great, Now We’ve Got Barbarians!   by Jason Carter Eaton, illustrated by Mark Fearing Mom says that if the boy doesn’t clean his room, he’ll get pests . . . which the boy thinks aren’t all that bad, right? However, things go downhill when barbarian “pests” start arriving. Because they eat everything, use his toys to clean out their ears, and steal blankets and pillows. So there is only one thing to do — CLEAN up his room. It’s a predictable but funny solution with the perfect forgot-to-clean-up twist at the end.

Walrus in the Bathtub  by Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Matt Hunt The worst thing about this family’s new home is the walrus in the bathtub. And walrus songs are very, very loud. It’s a big problem. The family tries lots of clever things to get the walrus to leave the bathtub but with no success. So they decide to move. Again. That’s when the walrus shows them his list — “ How to Make Your New Family Feel Welcome ” — which, surprisingly, includes all the things that annoy the family. It turns out the walrus was just trying to be nice. As a result, the family stays with a few *new* rules. This story will make you want your own walrus in a bathtub.

The Thingity-Jig by Kathleen Doherty, illustrated by Kristyna Litten Wordplay, problem-solving, and persistence! One day Bear finds a Thingity-Jig (aka. a couch), which he thinks is wonderful as a sit-on-it, jump-on-it thing.  He asks his friends to help him carry it home but they’re too fast asleep, so Bear figures out some ideas to do it himself. He makes a Rolly-Rumpity! Which is a pack-it-up, heap-it-up, load-it-up thing. That isn’t enough to move the Thingit-Jig so Bear makes something else — a Lifty-Uppity. And then, a Pushy-Poppity. And at daybreak, he arrives back at home where his friends are waking up, with his special Thingity-Jig. Bingity…Bing…Boing…Bear falls asleep.

Someday is Now: Clara Luper and the 1958 Oklahoma City Sit-Ins  by Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich Clara advocated for justice and equality during a time when Black people weren’t permitted the same rights as white people. As a teacher, she inspired her students to believe that change was possible. Clara and her students went to the Katz drugstore and asked to be served — even though the store didn’t serve black people. She and her students returned day after day despite people yelling and throwing food. Eventually, the Katz store relented and started to serve people of all races. Clara and her students finally could enjoy a Coke and a burger without trouble.

Wangari’s Trees of Peace  by Jeannette Winter Based on the true story of Wangari Maathai, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, read how Wangari helped her country of Kenya whose forests were all but destroyed. She started planting trees which started a movement motivating other people to plant trees as well. This is an example of how narrative nonfiction book can also teach the plot structure of problem and solution .

Battle Bunny   by Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett, illustrated by Matt Myers When Alex gets a silly, sappy picture book called Birthday Bunny, he picks up a pencil and turns it into something he’d like to read: Battle Bunny. An adorable rabbit’s journey through the forest becomes a secret mission to unleash an evil plan–a plan that only Alex can stop. Not only does this mentor text model problem and solution, but also voice and revision.

When Pigs Fly  by James Burke One day, an exuberant pig declares that he will fly. His sister observes with disbelief and horror as one attempt after another fails. The brother pig is so disappointed that he decides to give up. That’s when his sister comes up with an idea — something he hasn’t tried before that will help her brother fly — a pretend airplane. The pigs’ expressive illustrations are absolutely perfect as is the message of persistence despite failure.

Piper and Purpa Forever!  by Susan Lendroth, illustrated by Olivia Feng Most stories have a  problem and a solution  but this story is a great example showing a little girl’s ability to creatively  problem solve  with a beautiful solution to her problem. Piper loves her beloved purple sweater, Purpa, and is so sad when she grows out of it. Will she be able to keep her sweater somehow?

My grandson loves cars, RC cars, sports cars but I don’t find any books about cars, racing, car features, etc. It would be a ‘hook’ to get him to read more. Any suggestions appreciated.

Teach Character, Setting, Problem, Solution

Are you looking for inspiration to teach your students how to write their best, most brilliant stories?

Look no further! I have some great ideas for you to motivate your students and have them engaged in writing stories like they’ve never been before.

Where to Start?

Character, setting, problem, and solution are the basic story elements. Every story—from short stories to fairy tales and Greek myths or Harry Potter to Shakespeare—has those four elements, or it’s not a story. Try it for yourself. Think of a favorite story and test those four pillars. 

Always Start with the Characters

Character is the most important element of any story. Just think about it! Without the element of a good character, we would soon give up on a story. Our characters need to be larger than life, and we need to know what happens to them. We should be rooting for them. We don’t even have to particularly like them as long as we are interested in them and care what happens to them.

Talk Before You Write

In all of the activities below, the emphasis is on talking and planning – not writing. If you allow plenty of time for this, when it is finally time to write a story, it will be much richer.

Start by talking about your students’ favorite characters; these could be characters from books , films, TV programs, or even video games. What is it about the characters that they like or that keeps them interested in them?

Here are my activities to start building interesting stories and keep your students motivated to keep writing:

1. Visualize your character                                                                                

Cut out a selection of interesting faces from old magazines and newspapers. Make sure you have a good range of diverse characters. Now, look more closely at the images and choose the one that you are most drawn to. Think of a name for your character and talk about their values. What kind of person are they?

If you need prompts for this, write a list of captions like:

Untrustworthy

In groups, encourage your students to talk about the ways your character is kind, for example. What sort of things might they do to show they are kind? Do they help old people? Do they make cakes for a friend? Or maybe they are mean; they never share their sweets, and they hide stolen treasures under the ground?

2. Character occupation

Another way to introduce a character is to prepare some character prompt cards with pictures or words of different characters, such as: 

Choose one of the characters you feel drawn to and talk about some of their traits, just like in the activity above.

3. Get to know your character

Now that you have an image of your character, let’s start to build it up by asking the following questions:

Where do they live?

Who are their friends and family?

What do they like?

What do they hate?

What do they want most in life?

How will they get it?

This should be a group or partner discussion. We are just thinking out loud at this stage, so it is fine to change your mind if you think of something better for your character as you start talking about them. This is how real authors plan and build characters. 

4. Name your character

This activity is an alternative way to build a character.

Type your chosen name into a search engine and make a random search for images of that name.

For example, if your favorite name is David, type into a search engine images of David. Keep scrolling down until you find an image that you like for your character.

The trick is to keep scrolling. If you still can’t find an image you like, change the name or the spelling and try again.

When you are happy with an image you have found, print it out and use it to write a description of your character.

5. Story setting

Once the students have a clear idea of their character, you can move on to planning your setting—where your story will take place. To decide on a setting for your story, similar to activity 2, use some picture prompt cards to choose from. For example: 

Haunted house

Bonfire display

Desert island

Old attic 

Bus station

You can either turn all the cards face down and make a random selection or choose the setting that you are drawn to. 

6. Search for a scene

Another way to plan your setting is to look through a selection of old magazines. Travel brochures and walking magazines are perfect for this activity, but you can use any style of magazine or newspaper. Alternatively, you can search online for images of a place and print them out.

In groups, ask your students to describe their picture without letting anyone see it. Can they guess each other’s setting without saying the actual name?

If you said my setting is a sandy place surrounded by sea, blue sky, coconut trees, and parrots, could they guess it was a desert island?

Talking and describing all helps to build up ideas and vocabulary in preparation for writing your story later.

7. World building

This activity is an alternative way to build a setting, and it really gets the imagination firing! 

What to do:

Tip a small container of dried rice onto a large sheet of paper.

Move it gently with your hands into a shape that you like. It can be a regular or irregular shape.

Using a pen, carefully draw around the rice shape, then tip the rice back into the container. 

The shape you are left with is your new world. 

It could be a new planet, a whole country, a kingdom, the border of a forest, an island, or the walls of a cave—whatever you want it to be. Just use your imagination. 

Start to draw on your new world. Add key points, landmarks, and geographical features like mountains, rivers, buildings, craters, or whatever it is you want in your world.

Working in pairs or groups, ask the students to talk about the setting they have created. 

8. Creating a problem

Now that we have a character and a setting in development, we need to remember the third pillar of every good story: the problem. To introduce this story pillar, think again about a favorite character and the problems they must overcome.

Problems like:

Harry Potter has to learn how to be a wizard while fighting his arch-enemy. 

Red Riding Hood has to find her way to Grandma’s house and defeat the wolf.

Charlie Bucket has to make it out of the chocolate factory alive with his Grandpa Joe.

As a group, ask your students to brainstorm a list of all the different problems they can think of and pin it up to use as inspiration.

You could give examples like:

I’m lost and don’t have a phone or any money.

My boat is sinking and I’m in the middle of a lake.

I’m hungry and I can’t afford food.

My dog has gone missing. 

I’ve landed on the moon, but my rocket is broken.

I’m being bullied by a giant boy in school.

My granny thinks she is an alien.

When your students have thought up a good selection of diverse problems, write them on paper and put them in a hat. Now ask them to choose a problem at random from the hat and add it to their chosen character and setting. 

Now we can start to put a good story together. (If you choose a problem that doesn’t work, just have another turn.)

9. Someone else’s problem

Another way to brainstorm problems is to open a newspaper, a magazine, or a news feed website at random and find out what is going on in the world today. Here are a few stories I found today at random:

My dad was a spy.

My home has been blown up and I can’t find my family.

My cat has the loudest purr on record. 

My pet snake is missing.

I know! They say real life is stranger than fiction. Amazing!

10. Even more problems

That’s right! The best stories are the ones where your character has to overcome not just one, but a whole heap of problems thrown at them. The more obstacles you can give your character to solve, the better. Don’t just stop at one problem. Heap them up. Throw everything, including the kitchen sink at your character. Really make them work hard. 

Ask your students to talk to their group about all the problems their character will need to overcome by the end of your story. 

Hot seating is a great way to build ideas for your story, so now that you have your character, setting, and problem, ask your students to take turns sitting in the “hot seat” and pretend to be their character. 

Ask the following questions to each “character”:

How are you feeling?

What is your biggest challenge?

Who will help you?

How long will it take you?

Where do you want to get to?

How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal?

11. Sorting it out

Every story needs a good ending. It doesn’t always have to be a happy ending, but we do need to get to a resolution or an answer to the problem in the story.

Ask your students to talk through how they think their character will solve each problem. It’s a good idea here to go back and remind your students of their character’s chosen traits. 

Is the character a strong or weak one? 

Is the character good or bad?

Will they need to change by the end of the story? 

Try to hold back from starting to write anything down until you have done this work. The more time you put into talking about your story, planning it, and mapping it out, the more ideas you will have in your head when it’s time to start writing. 

12. Story mountain

It’s said that every story has a different shape. There are lots of different-shaped stories, but the most common one is the shape of a mountain peak. Draw a large mountain shape and ask your students to take their character on a journey over the mountain.

Start at the beginning of the mountain and imagine your character climbing up the mountain. 

On the way up, they will face all the different obstacles or problems you set for them. 

At the point where they reach the top, they will realize how to solve their problems.

Start to climb down the other side of the mountain, solving each problem along the way.

Just before they reach the bottom of the mountain, they should solve their final problem and end their journey.

Work in groups so that you can help each other think of solutions if you get stuck. 

13. Story map

An alternative to the story mountain is a story map. A story map is a way of planning your story by putting all the elements of character, setting, problem, and solution together in a visual way before you start to write it. That way, if you get stuck or can’t remember what was going to happen in your story, you can always look at your story map to help you remember. This is a very simple version of a story map. Keep the drawing simple; stick figures are fine. 

On a large sheet of paper, write the word Beginning.

Draw a picture of your setting.

Now take your character for a walk in storyland by drawing a line or a “road”.

Next, draw a picture of the first problem they encounter.

8 Consistent Behaviors Of Practically Perfect Problem Solvers

This past month I celebrated my 42nd anniversary with my dear wife. One of her finest qualities is her ability to solve problems. I admit, while I like to analyze and contemplate the various approaches to solving a problem, she just gets it done. It turns out she is not the only female with this fantastic quality. According to our database, there is a trend among male and female leaders in solving problems.

In a dataset of over 47,000 men and 24,000 women leaders, men were rated higher on their technical/professional acumen. Still, women were rated higher on their ability to solve problems. The data came from 360-degree evaluations on each leader with an average of 13 assessments from their manager, peers, direct reports, and others. The graph below displays those results that were statistically significant.

How These Skills Were Evaluated 

I evaluated Technical/Professional Acumen by evaluating if people sought after the leader's opinions, had knowledge and skills that help achieve team results and if their ideas were trusted because of their in-depth knowledge. 

Problem Solving was evaluated by assessing the leader's ability to anticipate and respond quickly to problems, was trusted to use good judgment in making decisions, and their ability to spot new trends and opportunities early.

Understanding the Results

The results for the analysis were confusing because it was clear that being rated better at technical expertise should give men an advantage at solving problems. 

To verify the results, I re-ran the data with more of an experimental design selecting only 50% of the cases for the analysis. In the experimental design, the results yielded the same conclusions. Technical/Professional Expertise rated significantly higher for men (T-Value 2.276, Sig. 0.023). Problem Solving rated significantly higher for women (T-Value 2.432, Sig. 0.015).

So... What Does This Mean?

To better understand what created the differences in the results on Problem Solving, I analyzed the top behaviors highly correlated with problem-solving. Why? Because these were behaviors that would impact the perceptions about HOW problems were solved. I then compared the results for men versus women on 16 behaviors and found that 12 behaviors showed significant differences between men and women. Four of the behaviors were rated more positively for men, and eight were rated more positively for women. The graph below shows the 12 items that were significantly different for women and men. The items that were significantly different for men clustered around two issues. Technical/Professional expertise was rated significantly higher on two items and can influence problem-solving ability. The two other items focused on strategic perspective. Having the ability to understand how a problem connects to the vision and direction of the organization was a skill that also helped men solve problems. While these four behaviors were helpful for men, the eight behaviors that women performed more effectively made a bigger difference in the results.

In the end, regardless of men or women, these behaviors teach us some essential requirements for practical problem-solving that we ALL need to improve!

8 Behaviors of Practically Perfect Problem Solvers

What is evident in this analysis is that having an excellent solution to a problem, and a clear context for how that solution aligns with the strategy, are not the only two issues that impact a leader's expertise in problem-solving. Once again, the behaviors listed below influenced the PERCEPTIONS of others on problem-solving. So, what do others perceive these practically perfect problem-solvers to do?

ZFCO Problem Solving Study (2021)

1.       They get it done right away . In other studies comparing men and women leaders, we have found that this competency consistently shows the most significant difference between genders. It is easy for problems to get put on the "I will do that later list." It seems we can learn a lot from the women in our lives that take on problems sooner and invest more energy to get them corrected. 

2.       They model this behavior to those around them . If you want to change the way others perceive you in that behavior, you need to be considered the role model for it. Be consistent. Those who are good role models are more trusted. 

3.       They don't work on problems alone . Many problems in an organization flow across multiple groups and cannot be resolved without collaboration. Women were rated as better at collaboration. Men tended to act more independently. If you're going to solve a problem quickly, involve those around you and share the glory. 

4.       They know how to explain the problem and solution effectively.  A significant part of solving any problem is having good communication between everyone impacted by the problem. The first benefit of good communication is that it helps everyone understand the problem, when it occurs, and why it occurs. Second, the solution needs to be communicated to all involved parties. 

5.       They can influence others to stretch their abilities to solve the problem.   Many problems are hard to solve and require that people do something differently than they have done in the past. This requires you to be more skillful at getting others to step up and stretch to accomplish difficult goals.

6.       They quickly recognize where change is needed.  It is easy to ignore many problems. It's harder to identify where change is needed and do something about it quickly. 

7.       They know how to focus on top priorities.  We cannot fix everything, so concentrating on top priorities makes it possible for an organization to change the most pressing issues. 

8.       They understand the full context.  Solving problems requires that all people affected know how their role impacts the problem to be solved. Solving problems is more than just coming up with an excellent solution. 

Aren't you grateful for the problem solvers in your life? Problems can be stressful, overwhelming, and many of us want to pretend they don't exist. We want to hide them in a corner and tiptoe around them, pretending they are not there, and if we don't give them attention, they will walk away. They won't. 

Problems get solved when someone takes the initiative to fix the problem, understands their role in the solution, and cooperates. Problem-solving frequently requires the efforts and involvement of others. If you have a significant problem that needs to be solved in your organization, be the person that doesn’t just understand the problem but solves it.

I hope you can see how our favorite characters are such great-problem solvers. We can use their experiences to support our own children and students at home and in school. Books with a Clear Problem and Solution

When teaching kids how to comprehend and/or write fiction text, often times it’s good to start with books and stories that have a clear problem and solution text structure .

This means that the story line introduces characters and a problem at the beginning –> the character(s) try to solve the problem in the middle, which rises to a climax –> and at the end, the problem is solved, with the “good” guy winning.

The  determining importance post , from our Reading Comprehension Series , has a great visual to SHOW this progression in fiction text. We also have lots of free, graphic organizers for fiction text structure here .

Books with a Clear Problem and Solution Structure

Today, I’m sharing 16 of our favorite books that feature a clear problem and solution structure to help kids see how fiction texts are often composed. By the way, these texts aren’t just great for comprehension, but can also be used to help kids WRITE their own fiction stories as well, an extra bonus!

Ira Sleeps Over  by Bernard Waber is about boy named Ira, who becomes anxious quite about what his friend, Reggie, will think of him if he brings his teddy bear over to spend the night. This is a GREAT book for teaching text-to-self connections as well as the problem and solution text structure.

Dog Breath by Dav Pilkey is a pun-filled book about a family pet, Hally Tosis, who has incredibly bad breath. The Tosis family tries to help Hally get rid of the bad breath to no avail. But dog breath may actually be a good thing, especially when two thieves visit the Tosis family!

Oliver Button is a Sissy by Tomie dePaola is about a little boy named Oliver who is clearly different than all the other boys at school. He’d rather paint, tap dance, and read instead of playing sports like all the other boys, which earns him the name, “Sissy.” But once he shows his dancing skills at the school talent show, he receives a new name – “Star.”

Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion features a cute little family puppy who despises his baths. So much so, that he hides his bath brush and runs away. As he is away, he gets very dirty, from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots. As hunger strikes, he heads home only to find that the family doesn’t recognize him.

The Little Engine by Watty Piper is a classic book that features a clear problem and solution structure as the little engine helps the broken down engine climb over the mountain to deliver toys to all the boys and girls on the other side of the mountain.

Caps for Sale  by Esphyr Slobodkina is such a fun and interactive book about a peddler who gets his caps stolen by a bunch of monkeys. He tries, in anger, to get his caps back, only to be mocked by the monkeys. What will he do to get all those caps back? Such a simple solution that kids may be able to predict as they read along.

Any of Kevin Henkes’ books are great for teaching the problem and solution text structure with fiction. One of my daughter’s favorites is Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse . Lily loves her purple plastic purse so much she brings it to school to share, but Mr. Slinger, her teacher, takes it from her. To get revenge, she draws a mean picture of her teacher only to have him see it. She begins to feel great remorse for her actions and wants to make amends. Will Mrs. Slinger forgive her?

Mo Willems is one of my kids’ favorite authors. Knuffle Bunny was probably the first book they were introduced to by him. Trixie and Daddy take a trip to the laudromat. On the way home, Trixie realizes Knuffle Bunny has been left behind. Follow the journey of Trixie and Daddy as they try to get Knuffle Bunny back. There are more Knuffle Bunny adventures including Knuffle Bunny Too , but I warn you to keep a tissue box handy when you read Knuffle Bunny Free .

Jamaica’s Find by Juanita Havill features a little girl, Jamaica, who finds a stuffed dog and hat at the park. She takes the hat to the lost and found, but decides to keep the stuffed dog for herself. She finds herself wondering if she’s done the right thing by keeping the dog. She finally decides to take it back to the lost and found and finds a friend along the way. This book is a great one to show that characters don’t always face external problems; sometimes characters have internal struggles and problems.

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble  by William Steig is about a donkey named Sylvester who finds a magic pebble. Just then, a lion comes to attack him and he wishes to be a rock. Sylvester is changed into a rock, but he can no longer hold the magic pebble to wish himself back into his usual form. His family looks high and low for him and is eventually returned to his family. William Steig has such a  way with words  and his books can fit into multiple comprehension strategies, such as asking questions .

Enemy Pie  by Derek Muson is such a fantastic book for many comprehension strategies. It’s been one of my favorites for a long time and I LOVE reading it to kids who have never heard the story. When a bully (Jeremy Ross) moves into the neighborhood, the young boy’s summer is ruined. That is until the young boy’s father says he can help get rid of the bully (enemy) by making him some enemy pie. The boy wonders: What is “enemy pie” and how does it work? Will it get rid of enemies? What does it taste like? Will “enemy pie” solve all his problems?

Camilla worries about what others think of her so much that on the first day of school, she wakes up with a bad case of the stripes…and much more! Her body adds on the ailments of every fear she has until a kind, old lady helps her to learn that it’s okay to just be herself. A Bad Case of the Stripes  by David Shannon has an explicit external conflict, but kids have to read “in between the lines” to get the internal problem Camilla faces and eventually conquers.

The Stray Dog by Marc Simont is one of the books we used an example for our determining importance post with fiction . A family goes for a nice picnic away from the city only to meet a cute, stray dog. They leave the park without the dog, but think about him all week. The next weekend, the family returns to the park, hoping that the stray dog will show up again. He does, but now they have another obstacle to overcome. Such a cute book and one that requires kids to pay attention to the story that the pictures also tell.

If I had a dollar for every Elephant & Piggie book we’ve read {and re-read} this school year, I’d be rich! 🙂 All of his books contain a clear problem and solution format, but in such a fun and playful way that kids WANT to read these. While the words are written for the 1st grade level, older kids will enjoy them, too. Waiting is Not Easy! is one of Mo Willems’ newest Elephant & Piggie books and was also featured in our determining importance post with fiction  from our Reading Comprehension Series .

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is another classic book that features a clear problem and solution structure. Max is banished to his room without supper because of his behavior and falls asleep only to “wake up” in a world of wild things. Max begins to long for home again and wakes up to find that his mother has left his supper in his room to eat. I love how Sendak asks kids to read between the lines a bit to figure out how his supper got there and why. So adorable and such a classic!

Loved the tips and advice in your article. You explained it well and I guess I am going to apply these in my future writing project. You have to write the book that wants to be written. 5 steps (and 4 techniques) for effective problem solving.

Problem solving is the process of reviewing every element of an issue so you can get to a solution or fix it. Problem solving steps cover multiple aspects of a problem that you can bring together to find a solution. Whether that’s in a group collaboratively or independently, the process remains the same, but the approach and the steps can differ.

To find a problem solving approach that works for you, your team, or your company, you have to take into consideration the environment you’re in and the personalities around you.

Knowing the characters in the room will help you decide on the best approach to try and ultimately get to the best solution.

5 problem solving steps, 4 techniques to encourage problem solving, the bottom line.

No matter what the problem is, to solve it, you nearly always have to follow these problem solving steps. Missing any of these steps can cause the problem to either resurface or the solution to not be implemented correctly.

Once you know these steps, you can then get creative with the approach you take to find the solutions you need.

1. Define the Problem

You must define and understand the problem before you start, whether you’re solving it independently or as a group. If you don’t have a single view of what the problem is, you could be fixing something that doesn’t need fixing, or you’ll fix the wrong problem.

Spend time elaborating on the problem, write it down, and discuss everything, so you’re clear on why the problem is occurring and who it is impacting.

Once you have clarity on the problem, you then need to start thinking about every possible solution . This is where you go big and broad, as you want to come up with as many alternative solutions as possible. Don’t just take the first idea; build out as many as you can through active listening, as the more you create, the more likely you’ll find a solution that has the best impact on the team.

3. Decide on a Solution

Whichever solution you pick individually or as a team, make sure you think about the impact on others if you implement this solution. Ask questions like:

  • How will they react to this change?
  • Will they need to change anything?
  • Who do we need to inform of this change?

4. Implement the Solution

At this stage of problem solving, be prepared for feedback, and plan for this. When you roll out the solution, request feedback on the success of the change made.

5. Review, Iterate, and Improve

Making a change shouldn’t be a one time action. Spend time reviewing the results of the change to make sure it’s made the required impact and met the desired outcomes.

Make changes where needed so you can further improve the solution implemented.

Each individual or team is going to have different needs and may need a different technique to encourage each of the problem solving steps. Try one of these to stimulate the process.

1-2-4 All Approach + Voting

The 1-2-4-All is a good problem solving approach that can work no matter how large the group is. Everyone is involved, and you can generate a vast amount of ideas quickly.

Ideas and solutions are discussed and organized rapidly, and what is great about this approach is the attendees own their ideas, so when it comes to implementing the solutions, you don’t have more work to gain buy-in.

As a facilitator, you first need to present the group with a question explaining the problem or situation. For example, “What actions or ideas would you recommend to solve the company’s lack of quiet working areas?”

With the question clear for all to see, the group then spends 5 minutes to reflect on the question individually. They can jot down their thoughts and ideas on Post-Its.

Now ask the participants to find one or two other people to discuss their ideas and thoughts with. Ask the group to move around to find a partner so they can mix with new people.

Ask the pairs to spend 5 minutes discussing their shared ideas and thoughts.

Next, put the group into groups of two or three pairs to make groups of 4-6. Each group shouldn’t be larger than six as the chances of everyone being able to speak reduces.

Ask the group to discuss one interesting idea they’ve heard in previous rounds, and each group member shares one each.

The group then needs to pick their preferred solution to the problem. This doesn’t have to be voted on, just one that resonated most with the group.

Then ask for three actions that could be taken to implement this change.

Bring everyone back together as a group and ask open questions like “What is the one thing you discussed that stood out for you?” or “Is there something you now see differently following these discussions?”

By the end of the session, you’ll have multiple approaches to solve the problem, and the whole group will have contributed to the future solutions and improvements.

The Lightning Decision Jam

The Lightning Decision Jam is a great way to solve problems collaboratively and agree on one solution or experiment you want to try straight away. It encourages team decision making, but at the same time, the individual can get their ideas and feedback across. [1]

If, as a team, you have a particular area you want to improve upon, like the office environment, for example, this approach is perfect to incorporate in the problem solving steps.

The approach follows a simple loop.

Make a Note – Stick It on The Wall – Vote – Prioritize

Using sticky notes, the technique identifies major problems, encourages solutions, and opens the group up for discussion. It allows each team member to play an active role in identifying both problems and ways to solve them.

Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is a fantastic visual thinking tool that allows you to bring problems to life by building out the connections and visualizing the relationships that make up the problem.

You can use a mind map to quickly expand upon the problem and give yourself the full picture of the causes of the problem, as well as solutions [2] .

Problem Solving with Mind Maps (Tutorial) - Focus

The goal of a mind map is to simplify the problem and link the causes and solutions to the problem.

To create a mind map, you must first create the central topic (level 1). In this case, that’s the problem.

Next, create the linked topics (level 2) that you place around and connect to the main central topic with a simple line.

If the central topic is “The client is always changing their mind at the last minute,” then you could have linked topics like:

  • How often does this happen?
  • Why are they doing this?
  • What are they asking for?
  • How do they ask for it?
  • What impact does this have?

Adding these linking topics allows you to start building out the main causes of the problem as you can begin to see the full picture of what you need to fix. Once you’re happy that you’ve covered the breadth of the problem and its issues, you can start to ideate on how you’re going to fix it with the problem solving steps.

Now, start adding subtopics (level 3) linking to each of the level 2 topics. This is where you can start to go big on solutions and ideas to help fix the problem.

For each of the linked topics (level 2), start to think about how you can prevent them, mitigate them, or improve them. As this is just ideas on paper, write down anything that comes to mind, even if you think the client will never agree to it!

The more you write down, the more ideas you’ll have until you find one or two that could solve the main problem.

Once you run out of ideas, take a step back and highlight your favorite solutions to take forward and implement.

The 5 Why’s

The five why’s can sound a little controversial, and you shouldn’t try this without prepping the team beforehand.

Asking “why” is a great way to go deep into the root of the problem to make the individual or team really think about the cause. When a problem arises, we often have preconceived ideas about why this problem has occurred, which is usually based on our experiences or beliefs.

Start with describing the problem, and then the facilitator can ask “Why?” fives time or more until you get to the root of the problem. It’s tough at first to keep being asked why, but it’s also satisfying when you get to the root of the problem [3] .

The 5 Whys

As a facilitator, although the basic approach is to ask why, you need to be careful not to guide the participant down a single route.

To help with this, you can use a mind map with the problem at the center. Then ask a why question that will result in multiple secondary topics around the central problem. Having this visual representation of the problem helps you build out more useful why questions around it.

Once you get to the root of the problem, don’t forget to be clear in the actions to put a fix in place to resolve it.

To fix a problem, you must first be in a position where you fully understand it. There are many ways to misinterpret a problem, and the best way to understand them is through conversation with the team or individuals who are experiencing it.

Once you’re aligned, you can then begin to work on the solutions that will have the greatest impact through effective problem solving steps.

For the more significant or difficult problems to solve, it’s often advisable to break the solution up into smaller actions or improvements.

Trial these improvements in short iterations, and then continue the conversations to review and improve the solution. Implementing all of these steps will help you root out the problems and find useful solutions each time.

The only thing better than Beatty’s masterful rhymes are her marvelous characters. In Ada Twist, Scientist , she nails the curiosity and inquiry that drives a true problem seeker and solver. Our kids love this one, and we hope it inspires them to take on the mindset that there are problems to solve all around us. As parents, we love how this book both acknowledges some of the lumpier parts that come along with supporting genuine problem solving in our kids and reminds us that it’s so worth it in the end.

Stuck by Oliver Jeffers, 

Mindset: Problem solving can be fun (or at least quite silly).

Although we would never advocate throwing objects into trees, we cannot help but love this book. This whimsical tale shows a young boy, Floyd, as he attempts to solve an all too familiar problem—his kite is stuck in a tree! Floyd’s approach makes kids of all ages smirk and squeal with delight. When we read this, we enjoy acting amazed as the situation grows more and more outrageous. The book gets our kids talking, too. Even our youngest has ideas about why Floyd’s plan is not ideal and can share how she’d go about getting that kite un-stuck.

What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada, illustrated by Mae Besom

Mindset: I have the resources to solve problems.

Even though our goal is for problem solving to be joyful , sometimes real problems are daunting, especially to kids who may not yet realize that they have the capacity to solve them. This beautiful follow up to Yamada and Besom's What Do You Do with an Idea helps kids see a child really wrestle with a problem and gives everyone a way to talk about the opportunity available in every problem, even the ones that seem hard.

  • After that, it’s time to put the plan into action, just like assembling the blocks to create something amazing.

Ask Open-Ended Questions:

Open-ended questions are special questions that don’t have just one answer. They make you think! For instance, instead of asking, “What color is the sky?” you might ask, “Why do you think the sky changes colors?”

Puzzle Games:

Try simple puzzles with fewer pieces for younger kids and more complex puzzles with more pieces for older kids! You figure out how to fit the pieces together, which helps your brain get stronger!

Puzzle games are also great for hand-eye coordination!

Pattern Recognition:

This is all about finding the special patterns in things. Imagine a puzzle with colors or shapes. You have to figure out the pattern to solve it.

Dress-Up and Role-Play:

When you dress up and pretend to be someone else, it’s like stepping into their shoes. You have to think about how they would act and problem-solve what they would say if you were them.

Shape Sorters:

Shape sorters  are super fun for young kids. You have to match each shape to the right hole. It’s like a puzzle for shapes! This helps you learn about different shapes and how they fit together.

Building Challenges:

Use Wooden blocks or legos and give kids a theme or structure to replicate. Great for all age groups!

Cooking or Baking:

Cooking and baking are like yummy science experiments! You follow recipes, mix ingredients, and even get to taste your creations. You must figure out how to follow and “solve” the recipe so that your creation tastes delicious!

“What If?” Scenarios:

Present hypothetical situations (e.g., “What if you were invisible for a day?”) and discuss possible solutions or actions.

Homemade Science Experiments:

Make Dancing Raisins:

  • Clear soda (like Sprite or 7-Up)

Result:  The raisins will initially sink, then start “dancing” up and down due to the carbon dioxide bubbles attaching and detaching from them.

Coding Activities: 

Coding is like giving a computer a set of clues to follow. Think of it as telling a story where the computer plays the main character, and your instructions guide its every move. It’s our way of communicating with machines to make them do amazing tasks!

Crossword Puzzles:

Crossword puzzles are fun little word challenges. You must fill in the blanks with the right words and use your smarts to solve tricky clues!

Complex Problems like Brain Teasers:

Brain teasers are like mental gymnastics, making you stretch and flex your thinking muscles. What’s fun about them? There’s often more than one way to reach an answer, so your imagination and logic both get a workout!

Goal Setting Activities:

Goal setting  is like making a special plan for what you want to achieve. 

Think of goal setting as charting out your very own treasure map, with no wrong answers! 

By laying out what you aim to achieve, you’re setting the course toward your treasure: success!

Goals, be they immediate or down the road, act like our personal compasses. They keep you on track and motivated. And every time you hit a goal? That’s you cracking a code and unlocking a new achievement in your adventure!

Tips and Techniques

Expert vs. novice problem solvers, communicate.

  • Have students  identify specific problems, difficulties, or confusions . Don’t waste time working through problems that students already understand.
  • If students are unable to articulate their concerns, determine where they are having trouble by  asking them to identify the specific concepts or principles associated with the problem.
  • In a one-on-one tutoring session, ask the student to  work his/her problem out loud . This slows down the thinking process, making it more accurate and allowing you to access understanding.
  • When working with larger groups you can ask students to provide a written “two-column solution.” Have students write up their solution to a problem by putting all their calculations in one column and all of their reasoning (in complete sentences) in the other column. This helps them to think critically about their own problem solving and helps you to more easily identify where they may be having problems. Two-Column Solution (Math) Two-Column Solution (Physics)

Encourage Independence

  • Model the problem solving process rather than just giving students the answer. As you work through the problem, consider how a novice might struggle with the concepts and make your thinking clear
  • Have students work through problems on their own. Ask directing questions or give helpful suggestions, but  provide only minimal assistance and only when needed to overcome obstacles.
  • Don’t fear  group work ! Students can frequently help each other, and talking about a problem helps them think more critically about the steps needed to solve the problem. Additionally, group work helps students realize that problems often have multiple solution strategies, some that might be more effective than others

Be sensitive

  • Frequently, when working problems, students are unsure of themselves. This lack of confidence may hamper their learning. It is important to recognize this when students come to us for help, and to give each student some feeling of mastery. Do this by providing  positive reinforcement to let students know when they have mastered a new concept or skill.

Encourage Thoroughness and Patience

  • Try to communicate that  the process is more important than the answer so that the student learns that it is OK to not have an instant solution. This is learned through your acceptance of his/her pace of doing things, through your refusal to let anxiety pressure you into giving the right answer, and through your example of problem solving through a step-by step process.

Experts (teachers) in a particular field are often so fluent in solving problems from that field that they can find it difficult to articulate the problem solving principles and strategies they use to novices (students) in their field because these principles and strategies are second nature to the expert. To teach students problem solving skills,  a teacher should be aware of principles and strategies of good problem solving in his or her discipline .

The mathematician George Polya captured the problem solving principles and strategies he used in his discipline in the book  How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method (Princeton University Press, 1957). The book includes  a summary of Polya’s problem solving heuristic as well as advice on the teaching of problem solving.

How to Create Problems for Your Characters That Force Them to Grow

Are your stories feeling slow and boring? You might be making things too easy for your characters. So how do you create problems for your characters, make them uncomfortable, and challenge them?

How to Create Problems for Your Characters

Most of us try to avoid hard things. We have traffic apps to help us steer clear of wrecks and construction on the roadway. We espouse slogans like “work smarter, not harder.” We love hacks, apps, and tips to make most anything easier or more comfortable.

But what if the hard thing is the best way to become the people we want to be? What if we’re avoiding the very thing that holds the key to our growth?

Sometimes as writers, we let our characters settle for the easy life. What is the default state for your main character? Where is he most comfortable? You’ve got to get the character out of that state as quickly as possible.

Sources of Discomfort

Discomfort is a quick way to get your character out of stasis, and it can come from any number of sources. It can be internal, where the character’s insecurities, fear, or flaw cause intense discomfort.

Discomfort can come from a relationship or another character who makes your protagonist uncomfortable through a break up, an unethical request, or just plain rudeness.

It can come from difficult circumstances beyond the character’s control — an illness, a storm, or an accident.

Or discomfort can come through a character’s poor choices, which can amplify any of these other sources. Mix and match to see what stresses your character out most.

The Hardest Thing

Once you have a good list of uncomfortable situations or choices that complicate your character's life, you can turn to the larger obstacles. What would be the hardest thing for your character to do? What does he avoid at every turn?

Make a list of the hard things he or she avoids. It probably isn’t climbing Mount Everest or running an ultramarathon (although it could be — those are both hard things). For some characters, quitting a job might be their Mount Everest. For others, it might be crossing the street. Use that difficult action to push your character out of the status quo.

You can also challenge a character emotionally. What is the emotionally difficult thing for your character? Being vulnerable? Honest? Is it difficult for her to be humble or does she refuse to ask for help?

Explore what makes those things so difficult for the character. Then, exploit them.

Force Your Character Grow Through Action

Now that you know the complications and hardest thing your character could face, you can help your character grow. Put your character in a situation that requires at least one of those challenging choices. Better yet, make them choose between the two hardest things, and make them struggle through it.

In a short story or novel, the hardest thing is likely near the climax, and it might even be the crisis. Build to it using the smaller complications and discomfort, letting your character fail and make small strides as you go.

Bonus Benefit

At the very least, recognize that as you struggle to figure out what the hardest things are for your character, you yourself are persevering through the writing practice that will make you stronger over time. Stick with it. Writing is often hard, but you can do it!

Make a list of everything you can think of that makes them uncomfortable, big or small. If you have time, brainstorm a scene in which they're forced to face the thing that makes them most uncomfortable.

Don't have a work in progress? Create a new character based on this prompt: she really hated getting caught in the rain. Take fifteen minutes to list out what else makes her uncomfortable, and why.

5 reading lesson ideas for studying characters in literature.

When we teach the same reading standards and content year after year after year, it’s easy to get stuck in a pattern. In this blog post, I’m bringing you FIVE different ideas about how ONE topic can be taught. If we’re doing an interactive read aloud, guided reading, literature circles, reading strategy groups, book clubs, reading conferences, or a combination of these instructional contexts, chances are we’re talking about the characters in a book. The way authors develop characters and have them interact with one another is my favorite thing to consider as a reader. We can steer our students in many different ways when it comes to studying the characters they meet in their books. Today, I’m going to share 5 reading lesson ideas that will get students thinking about characters.

Reading Lesson Idea One: Main Character’s Problems

The main character’s problem is what drives the conflict of the story. Early on in the book, go over the four types of conflict (person vs. self, person vs. person, person vs. society, person vs. nature) with students and have them identify the developing conflict the main character is having. An added twist to this lesson is to ask students to make predictions about how the main character will try to solve each developing problem/conflict. This is different from how the main character SHOULD solve the problem. If we know anything about main characters, it’s that they usually have several flaws that keep them from solving their conflicts the logical way.

Reading Lesson Idea Two: Consider Different Character’s Perspectives

The author of a book intentionally chooses the main character to be the main character for a reason, but what if another character in the book was the one telling the story? What would different plot events look like from a different character’s perspective?

If you’re looking to incorporate a creative writing activity into a reading lesson, then one of my favorites is to ask students to pick an important plot event and rewrite the plot event from a different character’s perspective. My mind immediately goes to The Hunger Games at The Reaping. What would that scene look like from Prim’s point of view instead of Katniss’s point of view?

Reading Lesson Idea Three: Tracking Character Dialogue

This is a great one for an interactive read aloud that you’re reading to the whole class or for students to complete with literature circle groups. Have each student select one character who speaks through dialogue in a chapter you’re about to read. Several students will have the same character. Each time students’ selected character speaks, students jot down noticings about what the character said. When the chapter is over, debrief by doing a jigsaw discussion. Have students get together with other students who focused in on the same character and share what they noticed about what the character said through dialogue. Then put students in groups so that each person in the group focused in on a different character and each student shares out three noticings about the character they focused in on.

Reading Lesson Idea Four: Common Character Types

It’s no coincidence that we experience the same character types over and over again as readers, regardless of the books we read. This reading lesson idea is a fun one because it helps students see the origins of the characters they meet in books. Many of these character types originate in myths, traditional stories, and religious works. Have students list the names of the characters in the current books they’re reading. Which character fits into which character type and why?

Reading Lesson Idea Five: Interactive Character Anchor Charts

If you’re doing an interactive read aloud with your whole class, this is an idea that will help students visualize the main character as a multi-dimensional, imperfect, changing person. A lot of reading lessons about characters look at a character in one moment of the plot, but this idea is one that keeps students thinking about the main character across the entire book.

On the anchor chart, label it with the main character’s name and leave spaces for different items such as favorite quotes the main character says, their likes/dislikes, good moves/bad moves they make, etc. Students can help you build the anchor chart as you read the book aloud. Here is an example I have set up for our first read aloud of the school year, The Crossover by Kwame Alexander.

The Main Character's Central Problem

Tying the personal problem to the bigger conflict facing everyone in a story.

You've heard your Main Character needs some inner conflict, a goal for them to work towards. But you're never told why that exists or how to develop this very important part of your story. Until now.

I'm a huge fan of screenwriting books. Love 'em. I've got two shelves at home stacked with everything from Aristotle to Snyder and each one is well worn. When you have amassed a collection as great as mine you begin to notice patterns within the different texts. One of these is the idea that the central character in a story, the Main Character, must have some kind of internal struggle that exists outside of the struggles that many of the other characters face.

Unfortunately that's usually as far as those texts go in explaining why this is. They rarely offer concrete assistance, and when they do it always seems to be lacking.

So What's the Problem?

The Main Character's central problem is tied thematically to the other problems in a story. It is not something separate or something random that you can just force in there. And there is something very precise with how it should be employed in a successful story. Often, though it is not always the case, overcoming this problem will help solve the problems affecting everyone in what is generally considered the A story line.

To clarify this understanding, let's bring in a real world example. It's one thing to pontificate about story theory and quite another to see it in action. With that in mind, when it comes to great examples of the Main Character's central problem we need look no further than everyone's favorite curmudgeon: Phil Connors.

In the DVD commentary for the film Groundhog Day , writer/director Harold Ramis mentions the idea that Phil's growth of character was modeled after Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' famous five stages of grief . In order these stages are denial, anger, depression, bargaining and acceptance. Since there are plenty of other places that explore these five stages in more detail , this article will focus mainly on the final stage: acceptance.

Problems and Solutions

Stories are all about solving problems. Through the Main Character, we the audience get to experience what it feels like to live with these problems, and if the story calls for it, discover a way to overcome them. If the Main Character resolves their issues (and not every one does ), then they have found the appropriate solution to their problems. This is precisely what happens in Groundhog Day .

Following the five stages, Phil's solution is quite obviously Acceptance .

PHIL: No matter what happens tomorrow or for the rest of my life, I'm happy now because I love you.

Phil has learned to accept his predicament and live in the moment. By doing so, he resolves the problems surrounding him and thus, gets to enjoy the fruits of his transformation.

So what then is Phil's Central Problem? What drives him to do the things he does? What thing is responsible for all the issues he experiences within the story?

The Course of a Character's Development

It's not enough to simply say Phil starts without acceptance in his life. Going from a lack of something to an abundance of that very same thing offers little in terms of scene development, i.e. it's boring. A more effective approach is to fill the Main Character with an abundance of a trait that offers the most dramatic tension with the Solution. In Phil's case, this trait would be Rejection .

If Acceptance is allowing something in, then Rejection would be pushing something away. Put the two terms together in a room and watch the sparks fly. That's the basis for dramatic tension and an excellent model of what Phil's character arc is all about.

The following are a few choice examples of Phil rejecting those around him:

PRODUCER: Have you met Rita? She's really nice. I think you'll have fun.
PHIL: She's fun. But not my kind of fun.
RITA: Would you like to come to dinner with Larry and me?
PHIL: No, thank you. I've seen Larry eat.
PHIL: I would love to stand here and talk to you but I'm not going to.
NED: What are you doing for dinner?
PHIL: Something else.

and finally

RITA: Phil, are you going to the groundhog dinner?
PHIL: No, I had groundhog for lunch.

Phil's central problem is that he keeps pushing people away, he keeps rejecting them. This problematic attitude continues throughout the first act and into most of the second. It is this trait that causes him the most trouble and is at the center of his personal journey. When he replaces that Rejection in his heart with Acceptance, his problems end, he wins the girl, and tomorrow finally comes.

Meaning and Structure

The whole purpose behind analyzing a film's structure is to determine what the author's original intent was. Most authors write because they have something to say and because they want to communicate some greater meaning. Analysis seeks to identify this meaning. Usually the process of breaking a film down is a guessing game that is open to interpretation, but with Groundhog Day we have an example where the author is in effect, giving us the answer.

If Ramis' intent was to show Phil growing into acceptance than it follows that Phil's solution, the one thing that would resolve his personal issues, would be Acceptance. Backtracking, we can see then that to construct a meaningful story, Phil would need to start out driven by a trait with the most dynamic tension with that solution. In this case, that trait would be Rejection--a resistance or a need to run counter to what is offered to a character.

This then is the meaning of Groundhog Day and is the reason why so many people hold the film close to their hearts. Phil grows from a person who rejects others to one who accepts what happens to him. In doing so, he solves the logistical problem of being stuck in the same day over and over again, and personally becomes a better person for it.

Groundhog Day is a perfect example of structure communicating the meaning. Phil's central problem is clear, identifiable, and matched with a meaningful solution. Your writing should have the same.

Advanced Story Theory for this Article

According to the above analysis, Phil's Main Character Problem would be Rejection (Rejection) and his Solution would be Acceptance. The Problem and Solution are always Dynamic Pairs as they offer the greatest dramatic tension within a story. A lack of Acceptance is not the same thing as Rejection in the same way that a lack of Faith is not the same as Disbelief. This explains why Phil needed to be the kind of person who pushed others away, or rejected them, in order for the story to work as well as it does.

Typically, when analyzing a story with Dramatica one starts with the top of the model and works their way down to a finer granularity. Knowing what I did about Ramis' motivation to use the five stages of grief, I actually started at the bottom of the chart and picked his Solution of Acceptance. From there, the rest of the storyform simply fell into place.

Problem solving

There are N problems numbered 1..N which you need to complete. You've arranged the problems in increasing difficulty order, and the i th problem has estimated difficulty level i . You have also assigned a rating vi to each problem. Problems with similar vi values are similar in nature. On each day, you will choose a subset of the problems and solve them. You've decided that each subsequent problem solved on the day should be tougher than the previous problem you solved on that day. Also, to make it less boring, consecutive problems you solve should differ in their vi rating by at least K. What is the least number of days in which you can solve all problems?

Input Format

The first line contains the number of test cases T. T test cases follow. Each case contains an integer N and K on the first line, followed by integers v1,...,vn on the second line.

Constraints

1 <= T <= 100 1 <= N <= 300 1 <= vi <= 1000 1 <= K <= 1000

Output Format

Output T lines, one for each test case, containing the minimum number of days in which all problems can be solved.

For the first example, you can solve the problems with rating 5 and 7 on the first day and the problem with rating 4 on the next day. Note that the problems with rating 5 and 4 cannot be completed consecutively because the ratings should differ by at least K (which is 2). Also, the problems cannot be completed in order 5,7,4 in one day because the problems solved on a day should be in increasing difficulty level.

For the second example, all problems can be solved on the same day.

“It makes no sense. It’s impossible to solve” – so decries John “Ludwig” Taylor (David Mitchell) when trying to solve a murder using puzzle techniques in the new six-part BBC detective series, Ludwig .

Each week puzzle designer John uses his skill to solve a crime. The show, also starring Anna Maxwell Martin, is guided by the thematic question: “how do we solve life’s puzzles?”

John’s twin brother James (also portrayed by Mitchell) has suddenly gone missing. Enlisted by his sister-in-law Lucy (Maxwell Martin) to help find James, John reluctantly moves in with her and her son, leaving behind his ordered and self-contained (but lonely) world. Lucy wants John to pose as his brother to get some information from James’ office about a case that he was working on, which she suspects is related to his disappearance.

What begins as a benign task very quickly escalates into John taking on James’ role as DCI James Taylor with Cambridge’s Major Crime Squad. John is swept along to crime scenes wherein he proceeds to solve murders using various puzzle techniques: logic puzzles , spot the difference, coincidences (three to be statistically relevant) and even reverse chess (where maths, probability and reason are used to determine prior moves in the middle of a chess game).

The situation creates a bind plot. John wants the love of a family – specifically James’ family – but if he finds James, he will lose the “family” he has found. He is caught between his want (to have a family and Lucy) and his flaw (to learn to engage with people and the world).

In my research , I posit that the bind plot is more prevalent in comedy than in drama. The tension between the want and the flaw is what underpins the comedy.

John is navigating life on two levels: as an imposter detective and as a lonely man with signs of neurodiversity, such as an inability to understand and express feelings , and the need to follow certain rules . This results in misunderstanding and confusion for some of those around John, but not for John himself.

This duality is a common technique in comedy writing. As comic writer Steve Kaplan notes in The Hidden Tools of Comedy (2013), comedy emerges in the gap between the wavy-line character (the confused one) and the straight-line character (with a fixed view on life).

What is interesting in Ludwig is John’s character arc. He begins as a straight-liner, but both his interactions with Lucy and her determination to find her husband force him to question his own life. His increasing confusion about, and interaction with, other people result in him becoming a wavy-line character.

In my book Situation Comedy, Character, and Psychoanalysis (2019) I label the straight-liner as “echo characters”. That’s because they echo the unconscious fear of the main character, while maintaining their own fixed view of the world. It is because the main character is unconscious of this behaviour in themselves that such characters become “trapped” in their dynamic.

These kinds of relationships define the sitcom. Think Phoebe in Friends , who echoes Rachel’s fear of commitment . In the first episode of Friends, Rachel is a runaway bride and Ross is recovering from a failed marriage, setting both these characters up as commitment-phobic. Phoebe, however, embraces life and all its alternatives, no matter how kooky or off-beat.

Moss in The IT Crowd, echoes in a different way. His attention to detail and focus are the antithesis of Roy’s approach to work and Jen’s lack of knowledge of anything to do with IT. Roy fears work and Jen fears being exposed as ignorant, making Moss their perfect echo character.

Maintaining the pretence

The challenge for Ludwig’s head writer and creator, Mark Brotherhood, is to ensure that John can keep up the pretence of being his twin brother, while at the same time ensuring the pretence is believable.

Brotherhood’s previous credits (Father Brown, Death in Paradise, Benidorm and Mount Pleasant) have shown his ability to merge genres such as crime and drama with comic moments.

Set-ups such as characters having recently joined the crimes unit (who did not know James), and fleeting interactions with other characters (who do know James), save John from exposure. But they also distract the audience from the central question – “why don’t other people see that John is a different person?”. Instead we are drawn into the world of puzzles and how they can help solve crimes – and maybe help us solve problems in our own lives.

Dramatic irony enables the audience to be in on the conceit. We know John is not James, but we also know that John is a puzzle master, and we revel in his ability to solve crimes. However, being in on the deception prompts the question: what will happen when John is exposed?

In the vein of Poirot or Miss Marple , John is dedicated to solving murder through reasoned logic as well as increasingly astute observations of human behaviour – something he has avoided until now.

Ludwig is an engaging (and at times puzzling) drama with comic moments, governed by a thematic premise – to understand puzzles is to understand life.
