Summary and Reviews of The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff
Parini Shroff's The Bandit Queens is a darkly comedic tale about female friendship and women's empowerment that upholds respectful discourse about violence against women in India and the systems that perpetuate that brutality. Shroff's novel is a delicate tightrope act, always balancing on the line between comedy and tragedy. It quickly won my heart in engaging with sexism and casteism gracefully.
Book Review: The Bandit Queens By Parini Shroff
This is a tough balancing act. Parini Shroff's debut novel, The Bandit Queens, already longlisted for the 2023 Women's Prize In Fiction walks this line somewhat cognisantly though not always unfalteringly. The Bandit Queens is set in an unnamed village in Gujarat, some distance away from the larger town of Kohra.
Book Review: The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff
In this novel, Greeta romanticizes Phoolan's life and takes inspiration from her, which I thought was clever and interesting. This book is chock full of dark humor and uses it as a way to critique very terrible things, like severe abuse (physical and sexual), casual cruelty, caste and racial discrimination, patriarchy, and more.

Review of The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff
A debut novel as humorous as it is dark, The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff is a drama-riddled story about the strength women wield when banding together in the battle against systemic oppression. Geeta's been branded a churel — a revenge-seeking mythological being — by her Indian village because her abusive husband, Ramesh, disappeared five years ago and everybody assumes she murdered him.

An Amazon Best Book of January 2023: The Bandit Queens is a delightfully entertaining and thought-provoking debut novel about female friendship, agency, and unlikely killers. After her husband disappears without a trace, Geeta's small Indian village paints her as his killer—when we meet her the gossip barely stings, though the loneliness of being ostracized is evident.

Amazon.com: Customer reviews: The Bandit Queens: A Novel
The Bandit Queens is beautifully-written, witty, and insightful. I learned a lot about Indian culture and the oppression of women through Shroff's carefully crafted characters and descriptive scenes. There were a lot of Indian words I didn't know, but Shroff strategically uses context to bring the reader into the Bandit Queens world.

The Bandit Queens (Book Review)
Ultimately, The Bandit Queens surprised me. It isn't the sort of book I usually read, but it is intriguing and well written. The dark humor makes for a novel that is both full of potentially upsetting material (sexism, classism, domestic and sexual assault, etc.) and a fast-paced, enjoyable story about a woman being thrust into a delightfully ...
