Creative Writing Program

The Creative Writing Program at UGA directs and supports the emergence of the artistic voice in print by offering a Ph.D. in English with a creative dissertation.

Director: Dr. Aruni Kashyap

Program Faculty: LeAnne Howe, Jami Mays, Reginald McKnight, Ed Pavlic, Andrew Zawacki, and Magdalena Zurawski.

The program teaches undergraduate and graduate creative writing and literature classes and hosts a visiting writers series that offers all students exposure to the Athens’s artistic community with frequent events, such as poetry readings, as well as workshops built around helping students with their own creative ventures.

For more information on the coursework, the faculty, the application process, and much more, please visit the Creative Writing Program’s page on the Department of English’s website.

Writing Programs

The Department of English is part of a larger network of writing-related programs and initiatives on campus. Our First-Year Writing Program serves more than 5000 students a year and employs over 60 instructors. Our writing center has recently received a generous donation from the Willis family as well as additional support from President Morehead's office and is currently undergoing a major renovation and expansion. The Writing Intensive Program reaches 1000-1500 students in approximately 45 diverse courses across the college, ranging from art history, biology, classics, geology, mathematics, music, religion, sociology, and women’s studies. Through the Writing Certificate Program, undergraduate students of all majors and fields can enhance their degrees and gain valuable communication skills through dedicated writing coursework.
