Short Essay On Social Media Boon Or Bane

Social media has become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, transforming the way we communicate, access information, and connect with others. However, the impact of social media is a subject of much debate, with some seeing it as a boon and others as a bane.

On the one hand, social media has numerous benefits. It has made it easier for people to connect with others from around the world, allowing for the exchange of ideas and cultures. It has also given people a platform to express their opinions and advocate for causes they believe in. Social media has also made it easier for people to access information, with news and updates being shared in real-time.

However, social media also has its downsides. It can be a major source of distraction, leading people to waste time scrolling through their feeds instead of focusing on more productive activities. Social media can also be a breeding ground for cyberbullying, with people using the anonymity of the internet to harass and intimidate others. Additionally, the spread of misinformation on social media can lead to a deterioration of public discourse and a decline in critical thinking.

Another issue with social media is its impact on mental health. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The constant comparisons to the highlight reels of others’ lives on social media can also lead to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with one’s own life.

In conclusion, social media can be both a boon and a bane, depending on how it is used. While it has numerous benefits, it also has numerous downsides. It is up to individuals to use social media in a responsible and mindful way, to avoid its negative impacts and to reap its benefits.

Long Essay On Social Media Boon Or Bane

In the digital age, social media has become a powerful force in our lives. It can be used for networking, entertainment, and even work — but it also comes with many potential drawbacks. In this essay, we’ll explore the question of whether or not social media is ultimately a boon or a bane to society. Through examining both sides of the argument, we’ll aim to reach a conclusive answer.

Introduction

The term ‘social media’ is now a part of everyday life for many people, including children and young adults. It is difficult to overestimate the role of social media in our lives these days.

On the one hand, social media has brought us closer to each other and made communication easier than ever before. We can connect with anyone in the world at the click of a button. We can share our thoughts and feelings with our friends and family, no matter where they are in the world. Social media has also given us a platform to share our ideas and creativity with others.

On the other hand, social media can be a negative force in our lives. It can be addictive and lead to internet addiction. It can be damaging to our mental health if we compare ourselves to others constantly or if we allow cyberbullies to get to us. We need to be aware of the potential dangers of social media and use it wisely.

In conclusion, social media is neither a boon nor a bane. It has its pros and cons, but it is up to us to use it in a way that benefits us most.

Types of Social Media Platforms

There are many different types of social media platforms available today. Some of the most popular include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. Each platform has its own unique features and benefits that businesses can take advantage of.

Facebook is the largest social media platform with over 2 billion active users. businesses can use Facebook to connect with potential and current customers, create brand awareness, and drive traffic to their website.

Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows businesses to share short updates or messages with their followers. Twitter is an excellent platform for customer service as it allows businesses to quickly respond to questions or concerns.

LinkedIn is a professional networking site that connects businesses with potential customers and partners. LinkedIn can be used to build relationships, generate leads, and position your business as an industry thought leader.

Google+ is a social media platform that is closely integrated with Google’s other products and services such as Gmail and YouTube. Businesses can use Google+ to reach out to potential customers, engage with their audience, and improve their search engine optimization (SEO).

Impacts of Social Media on Society

There is no denying the fact that social media has had a profound impact on virtually every aspect of our lives. It has changed the way we communicate, the way we interact with each other, and the way we connect with the world around us. It has also had an impact on society as a whole.

The most obvious impact of social media is the way it has changed communication. In the past, if you wanted to communicate with someone, you would have to either meet them in person or send them a letter. Now, with social media, you can communicate with anyone, anywhere in the world, instantly. This has made communication much easier and more efficient.

Another impact of social media is the way it has changed interactions between people. In the past, if you wanted to interact with someone, you would have to do so in person. Now, with social media, you can interact with people from all over the world without ever meeting them in person. This has made interactions much more convenient and accessible.

Finally, social media has also had an impact on society as a whole. It has connected people from all over the world and given them a platform to share their thoughts and ideas. It has also allowed for the spread of information and news much faster than before. Overall, social media has had a positive impact on society by making communication and interaction easier and more convenient.

Benefits of Using Social Media

Social media has a lot of benefits. It helps you connect with friends and family, keeps you up-to-date on current events, and gives you a platform to share your own thoughts and experiences.

But social media can also be a boon for businesses. Through social media, businesses can connect with customers and potential customers in a way that is informal, interactive, and cost-effective. Here are some of the specific benefits that businesses can enjoy by using social media:

Increased brand awareness: When you post regularly on social media, you increase the visibility of your brand. People who see your posts will start to recognize your company’s name and logo, which can lead to increased brand awareness.

Greater reach: Social media allows you to reach a wider audience than you would through traditional marketing channels like print or television. With billions of people using social media worldwide, there’s a good chance that at least some of them will see your posts if you make them visible enough.

Improved customer relationships: Social media provides an opportunity to build stronger relationships with your customers. By interacting with them directly, you can learn more about their needs and wants, and tailor your products or services accordingly. You can also use social media to provide customer service, which can help resolve issues quickly and efficiently.

Negative Consequences of Social Media

Social media has been linked to several negative consequences, including:

-increased feelings of loneliness and isolation -depression and anxiety – body image issues – cyberbullying – sleep deprivation

Loneliness and isolation: A study by the University of Pennsylvania found that people who use social media the most are actually the loneliest. This is likely due to the fact that social media can give users a false sense of connection and lead them to compare their own lives to the seemingly perfect lives of others.

Depression and anxiety: Social media has also been linked to increased levels of depression and anxiety. This is likely due to the constant comparison of one’s life to others’, as well as the overwhelming amount of information and stimuli that social media provides.

Body image issues: Social media can be a breeding ground for body image issues, as users are constantly bombarded with images of “perfect” bodies. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

Cyberbullying: Unfortunately, social media can also be used as a tool for cyberbullying. With anonymity and a large audience, bullies can easily target their victims and cause a great deal of emotional distress.

Solutions to Minimize the Negative Effects of Social Media

As the use of social media has become more widespread, so have the negative effects that come with it. However, there are ways to minimize these negative effects.

For example, many people are concerned about the impact of social media on their mental health. There is evidence that spending too much time on social media can lead to increased anxiety and depression. To reduce the risk of these problems, it’s important to limit the amount of time you spend on social media each day. You should also make sure to take breaks from social media regularly. If you start to feel anxious or depressed while using social media, it’s important to stop and take a break.

It’s also important to be aware of the way you use social media. If you find yourself constantly comparing your life to others or feeling envy, it’s time to take a step back. Social media should be used as a way to connect with others and share positive experiences, not as a way to compare yourself to others or make yourself feel bad.

Finally, remember that social media is only one part of your life. Don’t let it consume you. Make sure you still spend time doing things you enjoy outside of social media and interacting with people face-to-face.

In conclusion, it is evident that social media can have both positive and negative impacts. While it provides an opportunity to stay connected with friends and family around the world, it can also distract us from our real-world relationships. It is important to remember that we must use social media in moderation if we are to reap its full benefits. We must be aware of the potential dangers associated with overuse and ensure that we create a healthy balance between our digital lives and offline activities.

Social Media: A Curse or Boon?

Social media is definitely a boon for business class and celebrities (they’re also businessmen). But it is a curse for consumers, especially if there is no self-control of when to stop. Momming conversation with health wisdom

Is Social media a curse or a boon? let’s explore both ways?

social media boon or curse essay writing

According to a recent survey , nearly 50 % of the world’s population uses social media (that is over 3 billion users worldwide). The survey claims that approximate 86% of people use social media at least once in a day. And about 72% of people use it multiple times a day.

Another study shows that Facebook is one of the most popular social media platforms worldwide and in 2020, the global number of Facebook users is expected to reach 1.69 billion, up from 1.34 million in 2014.

This data is not only limited to personal use or making social communication but meant a lot for business purpose as well.

Nowadays social media has become a strong medium for business for promoting their business and building their online networking.  a new study has revealed that 73% of marketer believe that use of social media had been proved a most effective strategy for the growth of their business.

These data and statistics clearly explained the relevance and importance of social media platforms in our lives. We like it or not, but social media has become an integral part of our life and has a multifaceted impact on the modern society.

How different life was before internet?

The world web was created in 1981 by a British scientist sir Tim Berners lee. Since mid 90s, the internet had a revolunatory  impact on every aspect of life, and now with the passing time, it has become an essential element of our everyday life.

I still remember those days of (late 90s), when I was studying in medical college and we had limited resources (mainly books) for studying vast medical subjects. in fact, talking to your family, cousins or relatives or maintain a social communication was not an easy thing. Letters or STD calls were the two main sources for maintaining a social communication and we have to stay long in ques (for making STD calls) for talking to our families even for only few minutes.

Now, technological advancement has made lots of things easier. In this modern era, social media platforms like twitter, Facebook and what’s up has changed the meaning of social communication. these emerging social media platforms has crossed global boundaries successfully. And made our lives easier in every aspect.

But like all other things, social media has its pros and cons. It can work in both ways and may affect our lives both positively or negatively.

In this post, I am sharing both sides of social media (as a boon and as a curse). Along with this sharing some easy tips to use social media wisely. Read the post to know more!

Social media as a boon

As I had mentioned earlier, social media offers so many great benefits and advantage for different important aspect of our lives. Such as:

It helps in gathering, learning and sharing useful information

Personally, this was the first reason, why I had started using internet. Today, with the power of internet and digital platforms, we have plenty of valuable resources for gathering useful information. Academics, sports, health and fitness, nutrition, internet provides excellent information on all aspect of life. Google and other search engine work like a helping friend and solve our challenging quarries in minutes from the comfort of our home.

Helps in making and maintaining social communication

Second important point, indeed social media has become a back bone of our social life. Now, with the help of different social media channels, we can make and maintain our social relations easily and effectively. Personally, I am living on a foreign land (USA), since last 5 years. And I could not imagine my life here, without the presence of social media.

With the presence of these platforms, I always feel connected with my family.

It offers an excellent opportunity for businesses for building their own brand and create an online presence

Another important benefit, whether you are a solo entrepreneur or a settled business brand, digital platforms have an immense power to enhance your reputation and you can build your own brand by using social media platform effectively.

Digital platforms provide an opportunity to showcase your talent to world

Yes, this one is another strongest point, social media planforms give an excellent opportunity to showcase your talent to world.  I could say this thing confidently based on my personal experience. It was 5 years ago, when I moved from India to USA, visa status (H4) has restricted my professional carrier as a homeopathic therapist.

This restriction may have a strong negative effect on my self-esteem but social media and blogging have given a new purpose to my life. Slowly with constant efforts, I had established myself as a blogger and published my e books too. All these credit goes to social media and digital platforms that has helped so many people like me, in restarting their carrier.

So, these were some amazing advantages of social media and with these ways, it works like a boon for our lives, but it has some negative effects too. And can affect our lives negatively too.

Social media as a curse

Wastage of precious productive time .

As it has been said that excess of everything causes harm and same principle applied to use of social media too. Unfortunately, large number of our population (especially younger generation) use social media platforms for long hours, for just passing the time or doing other meaningless activities.

Unlimited usage of social media platforms is reducing productivity of our lives, this one is one of the most disturbing effect of social media that bothers me a lot.

Overuse of SM has created a state of isolation in real world

I am sure you all would be agree that overuse of social media channels has created a state of isolation in our real world. Nowadays, people remain lost in virtual world for long hours. The constant virtual engagement creates a state, where they had no time for making conversation with real people. This over obsession reduces their ability to make time for people who matter most in their life.

It has affected our physical and mental health negatively

Nowadays, each one in family have their own gadget or device. Each one (including kids and adults) keep them engage constantly either on different social media channel or have some sort of other activities like playing games etc. Sadly, it is a routine scene in most of the households.

This overuse had affected our physical and mental health negatively. The unlimited usage of social medial planforms for long hours reduces our physical activity and due to this lack of physical activity, people are suffering from obesity and other lifestyle related disorders.

Along with physical health, social media had affected our mental health too. With the constant overflowing information, and mesmerizing personal update (specially Instagram feed) lead people to make comparison of their lives with others. And in this comparison process, they feel themselves inferior and suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental disorders.

Social media is so addictive, and sometimes we did not know that we had that addiction. Read this post to know the 10 signs, you should quit social media.

Cyberbullying is another digital threat that make our kids’ lives miserable and affect their mental development at a young age.

Chances of stealing personal information

Last but not the least, we have to be very cautious while using different digital platforms. Otherwise, there are higher level of chances to steal personal information, and we may suffer from mental and economic harassment.

So, these were some cons of using overusing social media planforms.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, I would say “ like all other things, social media has its own set of positive and negative impact on our life. It all depends on us how we use it? If we maintain a good level of discipline and form a firm boundary, social media can enrich our lives with wisdom, knowledge and valuable information, otherwise it can ruin our physical and mental health, and can disturb our family and personal life as well”.

Before ending this post, as a physician, I want to share some easy tips to use social media wisely.

Tips to use social media wisely

  • Fixed a time and try to restrict your use for decided time schedule. Avoid using it early morning or before bed time.
  • Take frequent breaks. Constant exposure of overflowing information can cause more harm than good.
  • Keep a check on your way of using it. Avoid unnecessary surfing to just kill the time.
  • Avoid compare your life with others after seeing other people’s social media posts.
  • Know your purpose for using social media and try to keep your surfing around your goal or purpose.

On one hand it has proved to be of a great help in times like pandemic but on the other hand it has its negatives too when handles carelessly. We have to find a balance and let our next generation know how to utilize it.

Social Media BOON or BANE (Essay for UPSC in 1000 Words)

In this article, you will find social media boon or bane essay. All the aspects are covered with examples. If you will like this article, please share it with your friends.

Introduction: Social Media Boon or Bane Essay

In this age of the 21st century when interaction across the globe, transcends all the social barriers with the technological social media platform. Moreover, it is just a stroke of a mouse or a touch of a Smartphone. Platforms that interconnected the whole world to learn a revolution in Tanisha and Libya. The revolution that breaks the sultanates. Autocratic rulers like Gaddafi is the misusing the same platform for the election of the president of the oldest democracy.

Donald Trump, to the feeling hearts of common Britain to Brexit. Isn’t it a reason to comment that a technology platform that uses shaped for us is ultimately shaping us? Lamenting the deteriorating relationship between nature and man and man with society. The greatest poet of his Times,  William Wordsworth  wrote:

If we are all being sent from heaven, If such was a Naturals Holy plan, Isn’t it a reason to lament? What has man made of man?

Long Social Media Boon or Bane Essay

Social media is the technological dream of the 20th century and the reality of the 21st century. That help in providing information to the wide public across the globe with one stroke of a mouse. But, unfortunately, social media whose name itself precedes “social” has turned out to be a “Nihilistic Tendency”.

For example, on Marina Beach, a group of friends is clicking selfies with a dying girl rather than helping her. Isn’t the tool of love and compassion that we “shaped for ourselves” actually “shaping ourselves”? Isn’t it a reason to lament What man has made of a man? Further, social media has turned us social.

Moreover, in Psychological science journals in the last 25 years, with the advent of the World Wide Web, people might have broken the barrier across social boundaries. But, it has increased the emotional distance between the family members. About 62% population using social media wishes “good morning” on social groups but unfortunately less than 6% start a day by wishing family members. The platform that we shaped ourselves has started shaping us.

Why social media is a Boon to Society?

Further, our likes, and dislikes are all being regulated by big social media companies, which are using it as a nudge unit to transform our choices. Even a click or simple Google search can lead to mails of respective products for commercial companies in the form of offers, and cashback to ultimately force one to buy that product. That’s how the cobweb of social media engulfs us.

Moreover, political parties start using these nudge units, which is a major threat. Even the radical organizations that are distributing the social fabric of the country. As per the report of the Institute of “ Economics and peace“, every year millions of dollars are shelled out. Which use to shape social media platforms to radicalize and ultimately shape the opinion of the common man. It has cost the world every year 1 to 2% of global GDP.

Social media has turned into a vicious cycle. Both parents working and access to unrestricted use of social media have transformed the enculturation process. Moreover, turning children into devils disturbs the balance of society. Blue whale game, misinterpretation of religious texts, and communal trolls are just the manifestations. Hence, it engulfed the man into the cobwebs of social media and harmed him.

How Social Media is Useful?

social media boon or bane

It’s the two-way process that is not only forming but strengthening the social contract, resulting in a new form of social barriers that reduce it. Although, social media is a devil in itself. It shaped the opinion of the world when Bhutan face the crisis at the hands of China. It has transformed the opinion and pressurized the European Union for rehabilitating refugees.

Moreover, it also strengthens the love and affection for art, music, and architecture between the people of India and Pakistan. Those have fought battles on the western border and on the Eastern border. Hence, it’s not only a two-way process of shaping opinion but also strengthening bonds and overcoming enmities.

Moreover, the problem doesn’t lie with social media. It’s a tool, we shape ourselves, “the way we want to”. Further, there is no doubt social media has become a powerful means to transfer the opinion of whom and to what extent. As per the World Bank report, on digital dividends, still, two-thirds of people in the world don’t have access to the internet.

The two-way enculturation process of social media will become a boon than a bane. So that it should not become a reason to lament but a festival of celebration. Deciphering the true nature holy plan of the building of a just and compassionate society to the bonds transcends all social and geographical boundaries. That’s, what, Man should and someday will be made of Man!

Shedding light on the negative side of social media in which generally two types of individuals are involved. One who spreads hatred and the second who is a victim of such hatred. For the same reason, there are thousands of content creators and millions of content viewers in the world. These content consumers usually use social media as a way to enjoy and take a break from their exhausting and busy lives.

However, some individuals use social media as a way to unleash their stress and frustration by indulging in negative activities like insulting, manipulating , and spreading hate against people or groups to fulfil their agenda or to satisfy their ego.

They write personal comments regarding random people or particular people without thinking about the consequences of their actions. Have we become so irresponsible and immature that we can’t even think two steps ahead about what impact our actions could usher in the longer term what is going to be the result of such negative behaviour on the victim and the way this can negatively impact their psychological state and life?

One hateful comment can affect the victim’s mental health. Positive and negative feedback can be hard to tell between. Positive criticism sometimes referred to as constructive criticism, entails giving someone feedback in a way that does not offend them but instead motivates them to change for the better. The prevalence of negative criticism on today’s social media platforms frequently results in the absence of positive criticism. Thus, it would be true to say that social media contains a sizable amount of negativity. People should use social media with caution since it can both create and ruin lives in a matter of seconds.

Methods to control hatred:-

There are various methods one can use to control hatred on social media and some of them are mentioned below:-

  • It is important for you to understand that nothing is more important than your mental health.
  • Protecting your mental health should be your priority.
  • Ignore the negativity and continue to move forward, it is the best way to live happily and peacefully.
  • There is no need to react to everything, not everything deserves your attention.
  • Mediation and yoga can help you to add positivity to your life.
  • Distract yourself by learning a new skill or language.
  • Don’t stress about hatred, believe in yourself and simply give your best. Our deeds determine our destiny.
  • It is necessary to take a break from social media occasionally; such productive digital detox can help to increase mindfulness and can reduce stress.
  • Avoid spreading the news before verifying it; first, verify the facts before forwarding any content. Don’t be a carrier of fake news.
  • Criticism is incredibly essential for the content creator in order to grow and improve. However, the use of positive criticism as a medium to criticize others is good.
  • View positive content and share the same with your loved ones, spreading positivity can bring sparkles of positivity into your life too.
  • Abusing or insulting others is an inappropriate method of resolving stress and frustration, either trying to meditate to calm yourself or consulting a mental health professional whenever required.

It is necessary for each user to become “A RESPONSIBLE USER” “as social media is the platform to spread the appropriate content to reach every corner of the world, so be the one who spreads positivity.”

social media boon or curse essay writing

It is unknown to known that we are living in a modern era in which social media has created its own atmosphere to which most people are addicted. It is a platform that connects us to several people be it our relatives, friends, or ordinary people through different websites or applications like Email, Instagram, Youtube, WhatsApp, Twitter, etc in order to get information about daily events, job vacancies, and other kinds of advertisements. Social media has become necessary in every sphere of life be it politics, business, farming, agriculture, and so on. It has spread its tentacles all over the world: in developed and developing countries as well.

Social media: Is it an addiction?

According to experts, during the lockdown period, due to the Covid pandemic, social media came under the eyes of people as a source of relief, especially for students. They were able to continue their studies only with the help of social platforms as the institutions remained closed during that period of time due to the pandemic. Studies have found that 694 posts, 4595 SMS messages, 34 lakhs emails, and others were uploaded per second whole over the world. People do continue different sorts of activities on various social media platforms like sharing photos, audio, videos, and valuable as well as memorable pieces of the collection in order to get recognition in society and to improve their social status. As a result, we have been addicted to social media but we are not ready to accept this bitter reality.

Social media is a company as well as a boon for this developed environment of the modern era through various causes.

  • Firstly, we are linked to each other in order to get information in the form of news of the whole universe, what was happen, what is happening now, and what will be happening, through it.
  • Most people earn billions and millions through it and succeeded to make their future bright and prosperous.
  • Social media has become a type of source of income for people.
  • It has the potential to make people popular all over the world who have different sorts of talent just in a few days even in a few hours.
  • It reduces the actual distance between us and our relatives and friends and makes it a distance of one click.
  • We have witnessed that during the Covid pandemic there was no one in the market while it assisted us in several ways, it provided us with all the necessary requirements through online shopping, meetings, classes, transactions, etc.
  • Learners mainly students who were unable to pay expensive coaching fees, studied by social media for negligible fees even free of cost.

Disadvantages

If social media is used for unfair advantages then it is as dangerous as an enemy, it becomes a curse.

  • If people do not maintain their privacy carefully, then they have to face many problems like online bank robbery, and system hacking.
  • Many scammers misuse their identities and leak their privacy in order to get them looted.
  • Through social media, a large amount of data is transferred in form of waves daily which include personal details.
  • Due to the increasing amount of wave population, many organisms are being endangered: birds are one of them, in fact, several kinds have disappeared.
  • In the case of humans, their lifetime is reduced from twenty years to seventy years.
  • Through excessive use of social media, we invite many deceases like headache, faint eyesight, anger, etc that kills us very slowly.
  • As we know the communication of social media became very powerful and strong, sometimes we are not able to differentiate between fake news and real news.
  • Online games through social media platforms like Pubg, Freefire, and many others have endangered the manly lives of human beings.

As far as my thinking is concerned, we can not imagine a life without social media in this modern era of advanced levels of science and technology but surely we can manage its use in a limited way that will help us lead a healthy and peaceful life. If we do a joint effort then surely we would be able to create an atmosphere free of its addiction. I know it will not happen in one day but it will definitely happen one day.

In a nutshell, we can conclude that social media is both boon as well a curse, if it is used by someone for right purpose then it is a company or boon for us and on the other hand, if it is used in a negative way then it becomes a curse. Social media can share only our words through people, it can not share one’s emotions and feelings.

Social Media: A Blessing or a Curse?

author_logo

Friday June 21, 2019 , 6 min Read

Social media has fully developed in the last few years. A coin has two sides. So does this technology which has spread like wildfire. Life before this innovation was very different and now it has introduced many unrecognizable changes. Here are a few disadvantages and advantages of those changes:

Disadvantages

The more it’s growing, the more people are reaping its benefits along with its disadvantage. Here are six main disadvantages of social media:

1.    Cyberbullying

Before social media, everything was simple even when it came to bullying. With the advent of the internet, a new form of bullying has been introduced and it’s known as Cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is basically teasing someone by creating a fake account. With a fake account, you are able to do everything without anyone knowing about your real identity. Bullying like this has become easy through the internet. Before when there was no such thing as Cyberbullying; people bullying other people used to get caught easily. Sending threats, messages that contain intimidation and rumours are all part of Cyberbullying.

2.    Hacking

In addition to Cyberbullying, another main disadvantage is hacking. Hacking is basically stealing someone’s personal data and invading privacy to share with other people. This can cause a big loss to personal lives. Similarly, stealing an individual’s identity can also result in major financial losses. It’s all now enabled because of hacking. Accounts on Facebook and Twitter have been hacked in the past and the hacker has posted inappropriate things from these accounts that have affected their personal lives.

3.    Reputation

As mentioned earlier, hacking can ruin someone’s life. This also includes ruining their reputation. Through hacking, a person can easily create false stories and this can easily get spread all over the media like fire. Likewise, businesses that have a bad reputation on networking sites can face financial disaster and the inability to sell their products.

4.    Fraud and scams

Many frauds and scams have been reported on social sites where individuals have been duped by other people into believing something or buying something only to find out later that it was false all along. There are many influencers and bloggers on Instagram and Facebook and it’s hard to find out who offer authentic engagement and which ones are just flashy frauds.

5.    Addiction

Social media is quite addictive and this part of the technology is highly damaging and detrimental for personal lives. Teenagers have been the main target of these sites where they get extremely involved and eventually, isolate themselves from society. Their lives depend on it and instead of indulging in productive tasks and activities that can be beneficial for them and society; they choose to waste their time on social networking sites.

6.    Health issues

The excess use of networking sites has created many health issues. These health issues include both physical and mental instability. People who are addictive to these sites are experiencing many negative side effects such as headache, eye strain, social withdrawal, and sleep deprivation. Moreover, it’s triggering more sadness instead of wellbeing. We are continuously comparing our lives with other people and the pressure to look perfect all the time has made us go into depression.

Here’s how this technology is a blessing for us:

1.    Connectivity

The primary advantage of social media is connectivity. People from all over the world can connect with each other easily. Considering the fact, that our world has various religions and belief systems that separate us and create boundaries, networking sites are that one blessing that has eradicated these boundaries. Regardless of their beliefs, religion or culture, this technology has promoted peace in a way. It has made everyone stand equally on one platform without the existence of such differences. It is the actual beauty of social media. You are able to connect with anyone and share your thoughts and opinions with the world without the fear of being judged on who you are.

2.    Education

Similarly, networking sites have immensely benefited the education sector all over the world. With the arrival of online classes to the availability of all kinds of learning resources, every student can easily educate themselves. Regardless of your location and background, you can effortlessly increase your knowledge from anywhere anytime and watch videos on websites like YouTube without paying for any kind of expense and avail affordable services like assignment writing service UK .

3.    Help and assistance

Another primary advantage of this innovation has been how there are sections and groups on Facebook and Twitter which have dedicated all of their efforts and time to help people out who are facing any issues regarding their workplace, their educational institute or anything personal going on in their life like financial losses. People all around the world volunteer to listen to you and understand your problem.

4.    Information and regular updates

When technology did not give birth to this innovation, people had no idea what was going around the world. Now they are able to educate and update themselves with the current happenings. Televisions and print media have limitations on them and they do not convey the right information all the time, but this platform is guaranteed to provide with the right information and facts which will require a little bit of researching.

5.    Improve businesses reputation

Just like it can ruin the reputation of any business as mentioned above, it can also improve the reputation and increase their revenue. Positive comments and reviews can bring a huge difference to their sales and goodwill. Everyone knows how social media enables people to share everything freely. Therefore, sharing positive feedback and comments will let them know that you are not lying and the product the business is selling is actually good.

6.    Building communities

People with the same religion and belief systems can easily connect with each other and discuss their issues. It helps in building and participating in our own community. Individuals who love gaming can connect with other individuals who love gaming as well. In this way, they can promote peace and unification.

To conclude, the above-mentioned points are some of the advantages and disadvantages of this innovation. These points indicate that along with being a huge blessing, it also has some harmful side effects which can ruin an individual’s life.

Introduction

The internet, a blessing, the internet, a curse.

The invention of the computer and the subsequent birth of the internet has been seen as the most significant advance of the 20th century. Over the course of the past few decades, there has been a remarkable rise in the use of computers and the internet and these two have revolutionized the way in which we carry out our day to day activities. In addition to this, the unprecedented high adoption rate of the internet has resulted in it being a necessity in the running of our day to day lives. With this wide-scale penetration of the internet into many facets of our life, it has become apparent that the internet has both positive and negative effects on individuals and society at large.

In light of this reality of the two faces of the internet, there has risen the question of whether the internet is a blessing or a curse to mankind. This paper shall argue that while the internet does pose many real dangers, the internet is overall a blessing to humanity and its positive impacts far outweigh its ills. To reinforce this assertion, this paper shall highlight the significant merits of the internet and demonstrate how the ills can be mitigated for the good of all.

One of the most monumental effects of the internet is that it has led to the speeding up of globalization which is a process characterized by a major integration of economies and cultures. Globalization is characterized by a reduction in barriers between nations as the world strives to become a harmonic society. Sahay (2005, p.36) asserts that the ability of computing technologies to traverse geographical and social barriers has resulted in the creation of a closer-knit global community. The internet is to a large extent responsible for breaking down the barriers between different nations and therefore making the move towards making the world a global village feasible. This is because the internet exposes people to varying cultures and traditions therefore making us appreciate the differences.

Knowledge has always been seen to be critical to the advancement of any civilization. As such, man has always sought for ways to accumulate and disseminate information for the betterment of his kind. The internet has greatly aided this task by enabling the sharing of information among people at a previously unprecedented scale. This sharing of information has resulted in an increase in knowledge as people exchange ideas through the internet. With the help of the internet, are no longer confined to physical libraries as their only source of information. They can now tap into the vast resources that computers present through the internet. The internet’s connectivity has also led to more collaboration among students and scientists in their quest for knowledge thus further enhancing their educational experience.

The internet has afforded people the chance to get an education at their convenience. In the early years, one had to physically attend school facilities for educational purposes. This locked out multitudes of people who had the will to obtain an education but lacked the time to make it happen. Computers have changed this by enabling learning to be more dynamic by the use of online classes. This is in the form of the phenomenon known as “online education”. Students can take classes from wherever they may be and at any time by using virtual classrooms. The internet has therefore increased the number of people currently enrolled in higher learning institutes thus making education more universal than it was before the inception of computers.

The internet has led to a shift in the power bases by taking power from the political and economic elites, big businesses and governments and transferring the same to ordinary people. Ward (2003) suggests that through its distributive ability, the internet will decentralize traditional media channels, therefore, allowing for the interactive community which will result in citizen-based, participatory democracy. Therefore, as a result of the internet, people are no longer privy to government misinformation or even propaganda since they can report the news for themselves. This is a desirable change especially in countries whereby power is wielded by a few elites who control mainstream media and oppress their people.

As more people give information or perform activities online, the internet continues to cause a great infringement on individual privacy which is defined as “the right to be left alone” (Moran & Weinroth 2008, 46). This is especially through online shopping whereby one may be forced to enter personal details. When a person accesses the internet, their activities online may be monitored and information about them stored. User privacies have been violated by the use of tracking software and cookies which have enabled organizations to profile individuals. This information is normally collected without consent and sometimes without the knowledge of the user. Moran and Weinroth note that a more daunting reality is the possibility of this data being accessed and utilized for activities that may negatively impact the individual.

The internet has brought about the creation of a new class of people known as Hackers who are people who break into computer systems mostly for the fun of it. Hacking is one of the things which make the internet a very dangerous place. This is because hacking might lead to the exploitation of the vulnerabilities of a system resulting in harm or obtaining some illegal gains for the hacker.

While computer hacking is a criminal act under federal laws, this has not helped to deter the hackers and the fact that some countries do not have laws against hacking only makes dealing with hackers more difficult. While some hackers present themselves to the public and the hacking community as good or fighting for a good cause, this is not always the case as some hackers do use their skills for destruction or even blackmail (Jones & Valli 2008). As such, usage of the internet exposes one to dangers from hackers who may steal ones identity and use it to commit fraud.

One of the uglier effects of the internet is that it has made the world more dangerous for children. This is especially with regard to sexual exploitation since the internet has exposed children through its great connectivity power. The Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime (2000) states that pedophiles may and actually do use the internet to find potential victims and trade in child pornography. By use of chat rooms, children may be lured into meeting strangers who may then proceed to sexually abuse them.

While such acts were there before the internet era, the internet has made prying on children easier and more effective than was in the past. The internet is also used to facilitate the sex trade through websites that offer detailed information as to the counties where pedophiles may go to exploit children owing to the place’s lax child protection laws. The fact that the internet gives anonymity to people is one of the features which have led to the increase in child sexual exploitation through the internet.

The internet has brought about the possibility of cyber terrorism which is defined as “the premeditated, politically motivated attack against information, computer systems, computer programs, and data which result in violence against noncombatant targets by sub national groups or clandestine agents.” (Bidgoli 2004, p.354). The most notable of these attacks was perpetrated against Georgia and Estonia following the dispute with Russia. Korns and Kastenver (2009) note that these attacks resulted in the disabling of communication means for the Georgian government. These realities are bleak considering the fact that a small terrorist group may make use of the internet to severe essential infrastructure of a country.

For all its good, the internet remains as a dangerous and unregulated highway whereby crimes are committed and accountability is low. From the discussions presented above, it is clear that there are a number of real dangers that exist as a result of the internet. Some of these dangers e.g. the risk of children falling prey to molesters may be resolved by the use of a police force that has the power to monitor the internet.

The creation of global and enforceable laws which will make people legally accountable for their actions will also result in making the internet safer for all. While this goes against the basic idea of the internet as a place without any restrictions, every day realities dictate that law enforcement is necessary online to contain crimes that are continually being instigated through the internet. By so doing, some form of order can be brought to the internet, therefore, making it safer for all.

The threat of hackers is very real and presents a big challenge especially to organizations handling critical data. To cope with this, there are tools in place to secure computer networks against attacks. These tools ensure that threats against a network are identified and neutralized and that vulnerabilities are identified and protection measures are adopted. By detecting and defeating the intruders, the advantages of the internet can be reaped without any real danger to the individual or the organization.

The threat of terrorist attacks is very real in today’s world. Wilson (2005) notes that many international terrorist groups are actively using the internet to communicate amongst themselves, spread propaganda and even recruit new members. This raises the possibility that the internet could be used to carry out a well coordinated cyberattack on the critical infrastructure of the country. Wilson (2005) declares that it is unlikely that cyberterrorism will pose the same threat that physical attacks such as Nuclear, Biological or chemical threats pose. As such, the internet does not greatly empower terrorists to carry out their actions and as such, the fear of terrorists causing significant harm through the internet is unfounded.

This paper set out to argue that the internet is mostly benevolent to man. To reinforce these claims, this paper has highlighted some of the positive impacts of the internet on man. The negative impacts have also been stated and a discussion on how real the dangers are undertaken. From the findings in this paper, it is clear that some of the dangers associated with the internet are exaggerated and the real once can be gracefully handled through available means. This paper has noted that by adopting these measures against the dangers inherent in the internet, the dangers can be mitigated or even extinguish all together. Once that is done, the positive attributes of the internet can be exploited therefore making the internet a blessing to mankind and his endeavors.
