There are newspapers, books , novels, studies, quotes, sayings, teachings, poems, stories etc. Reading can impact our personality. So, we need to choose wisely what we read.

I cordially welcome all of you gathered here. I am here to deliver a speech on the Importance Of Reading. Before I start my speech, I would like to wish you a good day. Also, I want to thank you for having me this priceless opportunity.

As humans, we have a gift from god to communicate well. Nevertheless, we developed many options to share our thoughts and feelings. Speaking, listening, writing and reading etc. all of them are ways of communication.

Reading can be the best companion compared to the company of a human. With an individual, you will only gossip whereas reading will improve your knowledge provided you are reading the right text material.

Today, there is an abundance of text material on the internet about every topic. Whether you are a student, a teacher, a businessman, an employee or a housewife, you can easily get the text material useful for you.

For example, if you are a student, you can get your doubts clear using the technology of the internet. Apart from it, you can also get practice material free of cost which will ace you up for the exams.

If you are a businessman, you can read about the latest happenings in the business field which will help you be updated. If you are a housewife, you can get reading material on house management which will make your hard work easier.

Good morning! All of you. Before heading ahead to my speech on the importance of reading. I would like to wish you all the best wishes and also want to pay thanks for having me this valuable opportunity.

There is a lot of work and effort involved in writing a good book or a piece of text content. A good author compiles a book in months or even years. It can contain experiences, knowledge, facts, data, reality etc.

Reading a book simply means getting the knowledge that was compiled by taking years of time. In short, a book is equivalent to many years of effort. One can get it by spending a tiny amount of money or sometimes for free.

Most interestingly, some authors spent their entire life to compile a book. Hence, reading a book means living a life. This satisfies the quote; “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies”.

No one can deny the fact that “Reading is a good habit” because this habit makes us an improved version of ourselves. This habit may not give you all the answers but it can definitely make a difference in your life.

Reading will help you understand different perspectives of thinking as each author is a different person. Apart from this, they share their own experience of life which can help you understand the behaviour of this world.

Most noteworthy, reading can help you in each area you want to improve in. For example, if you are a new businessman, you can start by reading books based on business and entrepreneurship. This way will get to know what to do and what not to do to build a successful business.

Other than this, reading helps you enhance your analytical abilities. When you accumulate enough knowledge about a topic, you can make healthy conservation and no one can easily fool you. There are a lot of benefits of reading. That is why reading is important for everyone.

Literacy and biliteracy in ASL and English

How can Deaf read and write fluently without vocal-speaking or hearing? How do Deaf children read and write English without spoken English (or other spoken languages)? How do ASL-speaking hearing codas and dodas (hearing and Deaf children of Deaf parents) learn to read and write English?

Many people assume that deaf people don't read well (or worse, cannot learn) because they don't hear or speak English (or other spoken languages). It's completely a misconception.

The (re)definition of literacy

Literacy usually evokes a definition along the lines of "the ability to read and write." Really, there is much more to the meaning of 'literacy' than the ability to read and write. Dr. Marlon Kuntz describes literacy as a cognitive process. He noted that reading isn't what literacy is all about.

Is vocal-speaking (speech) prerequisite to literacy?

Many hearing people wonder how could Deaf people read and write fluently? Given with full access to language acquisition and rich language environment (ASL), Deaf people read and write English as fluently as hearing people. You may come across some materials (books, posts, etc.) without knowing they are written by Deaf people, authors, writers, publishers, doctorate students, and so on. And, many of them don't speak or hear at all and don't use hearing devices.

A graduate fellow pondered for a long while and gathered up his courage to ask a Deaf graduate student a few questions via an interpreter.

"You don't [vocally] speak at all?", he asked. Right, she replied. Even more, all of her Deaf family members speak ASL. He asked "How do you read and write well without hearing?" She simply replied that reading and writing are all visual. For her, it was common sense. But, for him, how? He reasoned that written English is based on spoken English. She explained in a simple way:

"You learn English in two separate modalities: written and spoken. We Deaf people occasionally encounter hearing English-speaking individuals who cannot read and write English. Why? They would have to learn another English in the written form. Must one know spoken English in order to write and read English? No. Spoken and written English share the same grammar, but they are independent in forms."

Hearing people may scratch their heads, but it's natural and unsurprising to Deaf people.

"Findings challenge the belief that proficiency with spoken language is prerequisite to written language development. Spoken language and written language were seen as not only parallel forms of the same meaning-based language but also alternative forms. Findings suggest that there is no one pathway to become literate." -- Cheri L. Williams, et al. April 1992. ( The Language and Literacy Worlds of Profoundly Deaf Preschool Children: Informing Developmental Theory. )

Manual-speaking (signing) is the prequisite to literacy

Dr. Kuntz discusses the best approach for deaf children to learn English or develop literacy skills through another language (their first language, that is ASL). To attain literacy skills, a child needs to be provided full access to a rich language (ASL) environment.

Thus, early language acquisition (ASL) is crucial, but many deaf children are deprived of their first language (ASL) by imposing oralism on them. In order for deaf children to develop literacy skills in English as a second language, they must acquire their first language (ASL) from birth (or at the earliest possible) as a foundation of language acquisition before transfering knowledge and literacy to another language (English). As a result, these Deaf children are adept in bilingual literacy (native in both languages or native in ASL and highly fluent in English).

Literacy doesn't begin at reading and writing in kindergarten school. It begins a long way back to child's birth. Language acquisition occurs when language is processed in a meaningful way. Language acquisition in ASL for deaf children is crucial for developing literacy (knowledge of the world) prior to reading and writing and learning English in preschool.

High academic performance

There is a strong correlation between ASL language acquisition and English literacy (bilingual).

"Results found that: ASL groups significantly outscored medium and low groups in English literacy." -- Michael Strong; Philip Prinz. "The Relationship between ASL Skill and English Literacy." March 1997. "The results were consistent: Deaf children of Deaf parents do significantly better academically than the Deaf children of hearing parents, including in reading and writing English..." Journey into Deaf World , p 267. "Native speakers of ASL achieve much higher reading scores on the average than their Deaf peers who are not native speakers." -- Harlane, Lane. et al. "Language and Literacy." Journey into Deaf World . Chapter 9, pp 287.

This is also true for bilingual hearing children of Deaf parents whose first language is ASL at home and in Deaf community. Codas (children of Deaf parents) have stronger academic accomplishments because of their upbringing as bilinguals. I've witnessed many codas and dodas having a high academic performance, including my own bilingual child who reads and writes at least a few grades above her regular school grade in English throughout her elementary years (soon going into a junior high school level).

Literal and inferential reading

Kuntz explains two level of reading: literal and inferential. Inferential reading is when a child understands the content on a deep level. When reading a book, a parent interacts with the child in ASL, asking questions, making interpretations, etc. The child learns to make connections between ASL and English.

Not only bilingualism brings a number of cognitive benefits to the brain, biliteracy is highly beneficial too!

A moment of recognition

An exciting moment is that on April 26, 2016, Governor Larry Hogan (Maryland) signed into law Senate Bill 781, recognizing biliteracy of high school graduates. This law grants bilingual students a seal of biliteracy on their high school diploma when they graduated from publich high schools in Maryland. ASL was included in one of languages.

Reading supports children to overcome disadvantage.

They will experience better educational mobility and social mobility..

• Reading for pleasure has the power to help mitigate socioeconomic inequalities such as low family income and educational background.

Those growing up in poverty are less likely to remain in poverty as adults.

• A child growing up in poverty who is read to at age five has a significantly higher chance of economic success in their 30s than their peers who are not read to.

Throughout school, they are more likely to overcome the barriers caused by disadvantage.

• Shared reading has a unique and transformative impact on school attainment. Shared reading at home exerts a stronger influence on children's academic performance than parents' supervision, control of homework or attendance of school activities.
• Disadvantaged children who achieve highly at the end of primary school are twice as likely to have been read to at home in their early years, compared to their peers.
• A child who is an engaged reader provides themselves with self-generated learning opportunities equivalent to several years of education.

• Children with secure attachments are more like ly to show enthusiasm an d attention during shared reading, which motivates their parent  or  carer to read with them more  frequently  and reinforces their opportunit ies  to feel safe,  secure  and protected.  
• It is the emotional aspects of shared reading ( e.g.,  cuddling, smiling, singing, and laughing) that boosts a child’s brain activities needed to forge secure attachment, not the parent or carer’s reading skill.  

They have healthy routines and habits.

• Shared  reading plays a role in promoting  a  relaxing and reassuring bedtime  routine . Language-based bedtime routines such as reading are associated with better parental emotional availability and parental attention.  Routines  can  support a safe,  stable  and predictable environment  that's  needed to  facilitate  children’s  healthy development.
• Reading for pleasure also supports routines later in life. Children aged 11-14 who read for pleasure are more likely to adopt healthy behaviours. 

They have better socio-emotional skills.

• Children who read more perform better in tasks of attention and have lower levels of hyperactivity. 
• Reading is associated with improved interpersonal and social skills, helping children form meaningful relationships.

• Stories can offer children a realistic and authentic 'mirror' of their own lives and experiences and a 'window' to view the experiences of others. When children are emotionally  involved in a story,  they feel connected to and see their lives as part of the wider  human experience.  This can be transformative when it comes to developing their empathy.
• Children who read books that offer opportunities to empathise with the characters have increased levels of empathy, especially towards stigmatised groups.

They are more imaginative and creative.

• Engagement with stories nurtures the disposition a nd skillset that are fundamental to a child’s creativity throughout childhood. Stories with imaginative and magical elements enable children’s minds to transcend their immediate context, freeing them from a fixed way of thinking.  
• By constantly formulating  and reformulating their  expectations  of what might happen in a story, young readers practice mental flexibility, an openness to new situations and interpretations and problem-solving.  
• A story can also  prompt  dramatisation ,  allowing children to use their imagination  to  visualise ,  verbalise or  act it out.  
• Children who are read to at age three make greater progress in creative development at the end of Reception than those who are not.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! – The Importance of Reading Books with Expression

Today I am welcoming Alex Trichilo, a Speech Pathologist from Australia and blogger at The SpeeL to share about the importance of reading books with expression to your kids. 

I love reading books to kids, but I didn’t always love it! I was too scared to put on the voices of each character and didn’t know any ways to get kids to actually enjoy reading books. For me, being a Speech Pathologist, reading books is an essential part of my job so I had to learn. I watched teachers reading books to kids to get ideas, and I practiced and practiced.

Now I consider myself pretty good and it isn’t scary any more – I have so many favourite books that are almost rote-learned. Let me share with you my tips and tricks for reading books to kids with expression so that you don’t have to go through all the hard work I went through!

I read a fantastic article last year by Mira and colleagues (2013) that actually found evidence that reading books with expression assists children in understanding the language of the book! This sounds like common sense but it was something that I hadn’t thought of before.

The writers of the article hypothesized that this could be due a variety of reasons – children were more engaged in the book reading, but also the changes in pitch, excitement and loudness signaled to the child’s brain that it was important, almost like a “Store This Information!” kind of trigger for the brain!

So my top tips for reading books with kids:

• Get comfortable – Firstly, choose a book that you feel comfortable with. Maybe tackling that tongue-twisting Dr Seuss book is something you aren’t quite ready for yet! Secondly, find a comfy space and settle in.
• Emotions – Before you read the book, have a think about the different emotions that the characters would be feeling in the book. Make sure that your tone of voice fits the emotion of that part of the story. Avoid talking in a lovely excited voice when the character’s dog just died! My favorite time to use my scared voice is for The Wizard of Oz “Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh my!”
• Voices – When you see direct speech from a character in the book, at least try to put on a voice. Remember that men have deep voices, kids have higher pitched voices and even animals can have different voices. You might use a snarly voice for a lion, and a hooting voice for an owl. Have fun with it – only your kids can hear you!
• Pauses – Pause for effect sometimes whilst you are reading, it builds suspense and interest in what happens next. You can take a little while to turn the page, or pause before you say a really important part of the story.
• Awesome Words – Some words are just awesome! If you see a really cool word in a book like “delicious” or “Boing!” say it with expression and excitement. These are so much fun and kids usually remember the awesome words.
• Make it your own – Have you read the same book a hundred times! Maybe the next time you read it, you can change the character names to the names of your children, or read it with opposites (i.e. up is down and happy is sad). This is really fun and teaches kids that they are allowed to make up their own stories.

Already doing these things? You are a superstar! If not, try something new next time you read a book to your kids, just one of these tips will make a big difference to your child’s comprehension of the story and set them up with good listening and comprehension skills for the future!

Some great tips! We incorporate American Sign Language in to reading as well, which can help to enhance understanding of the vocabulary as well as the pauses and inflections of your voice.

I just saw this link on the Teaching Mama website and it is so funny because I agree with you 100%! I am also a Speech Pathologist and a mother of three and find that reading books with expression allows the books to be more meaningful to the child. When things are more meaningful, children are more likely to remember the vocabulary and comprehend the meaning of the story. Short Speech on Books for Students and Children

Hello everyone! I, (ABC), am here today to deliver a speech on books for children. Well, as we all know, books make an integral part of our lives, as we are introduced to books since childhood, for academics. Books are the basic source of knowledge and information. There are various categories of books, for example, fiction, non-fiction, science-fiction, comedy, romantic, biographies, historical, horror, thriller, and so on. 

Reading books helps children to learn many new words and they get a good grip on how to use those words in meaningful sentences as well. Hence, books help to improve their vocabulary. Also, when children start reading books, they develop an understanding of grammatically correct sentences. 

Kids are mostly interested in fairy tales or comics, and some find horror-based books more fun to read. I personally prefer reading detective storybooks. Well, there is a lot more than fiction that books offer to us. We cannot time-travel to witness the historic incidents, but we can get a detailed knowledge of those incidents, with the help of books. The life stories of the great personalities of the world are available through biographical books. These books help us to know their family background, contribution to society, achievements, and struggles.  

The knowledge that we gather by reading books stays with us forever. It helps us to know about the various historic places of the world, and about the world leaders, right at our home. There are plenty of benefits of reading books for students and children. So here to conclude my speech, I would like to emphasize that cultivating the habit of reading books among children will make them more aware of many important aspects of life. It will help them stride towards a brighter tomorrow.

Long Speech on Books in English

Our finest companion and a great approach to learning new abilities are books. Reading books allows us to expand our knowledge and expand our minds. Your mental growth will be favorable and your thinking will be rich. In front of you, a new world will open up. An excellent book has the power to transform your life. When we are sad or lonely, we can read an excellent book. That will make us happy and relieve our loneliness. Reading books provides a great deal of enjoyment. When we read a new book, we get to see new locations, learn new things, and receive new ideas, all of which is beneficial to our mental health.

My warmest greetings to everyone in this room. Today I'm going to talk about books and how they play an important role in forming children's personalities. The primary source of knowledge books. Reading books helps children acquire a strong sense of language and expand their vocabulary. I believe that instilling the habit of reading in children at an early age is critical. Reading books can help them improve their concentration and comprehension skills.

It is true that books are our best friends. Books will not abandon us in the face of adversity. They will be a terrific company for us at all times. There are a lot of fantastic books out there that can help us modify our minds. To be motivated and inspired in our daily lives, we need a lot of good thoughts. Learning new abilities by reading a book is a great approach to do so. Experts and experts publish books based on their knowledge and experience. They provide a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

We can gain a comprehensive understanding of a subject. When we are feeling lonely, we can curl up with a nice book. I can assure you that you will begin to feel better. We must constantly avoid reading terrible novels. A poor book can destroy your head and cause you to think negatively. So it is always advised to refer to a friend or to the internet for good books. 

Books can be compared to gold mines. When we go astray, they correct us, amuse us when we're bored, and provide us with nice companionship when we're lonely. They give us a new perspective on beauty. They carry us to places we've never seen before, to heights we've never felt before, and to lands we've never imagined. If you want to choose a best friend for the rest of your life, choose books since books can keep us company in both good and terrible times and teach us a lesson.

Books are also changing their look in the modern world, from a hard copy in paperbacks to digital on the Internet. It is dependent on whether we want to read a hard copy or a soft copy on a computer. Finally, I'll argue that we've gone so far in this century due to our forefathers' wonderful laws, conceptions, sciences, thoughts, inventions, discoveries, and endeavors, all of which were written in books. That literature hastened the advancement of our civilization. Great people's books inspire us to think about noble things. They teach us how to think critically. They aid in the conception of concepts and the solution of practical issues. Some people make fun of dedicated book readers. It's crucial to put what you've learned in the books into practice rather than merely reading them.

Learning the relevant knowledge, whether technical, language skills, general knowledge, or fun-related information, is essential to making good use of books. When we use books, we have a brighter face and more confidence in ourselves. When reading a book, it's also crucial to jot down essential points, thoughts, doubts, or footnotes in a decent notebook. Every page of a great book contains the best and noblest thoughts of man. In a library, you can encounter all of the world's most brilliant brains. However, not all novels are created equal. Today, there is a deluge of books. Flooding is never a good thing. You can take up undesirable behaviors without even realizing it because of the effect of poor books. As a result, you must choose your allies carefully. You must make an informed decision.

Man's life and nature's life must be mingled up with the company of literature. A break between the pages of a book and the real world is fraught with peril. So, not only should you read books, but you should also read the vast Book of Life and Nature.

The book chooses the reader, the kind of book we read is a reflection of our own self. With this I conclude my speech. Have a great day.

Kamala harris’ ‘marxist’ father missing from the audience for her dnc speech, largely cut out of her life story.

Kamala Harris’ father, her only living parent, was not in the audience with the rest of the vice president’s relatives during the most important speech of her political career Thursday night.

Donald Harris, a leftist economist who turned 86 Friday, was conspicuously absent from the row of family that included husband Doug Emhoff and his two adult children, Cole and Ella, as well as Harris’ younger sister, Maya Harris, and her family at the United Center in Chicago.

While Harris spoke lovingly of her mother’s influence on her life in her speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination, she only fleetingly mentioned Donald, cutting him out of her briefly recounted life story from the time she was in elementary school.

She said from then, “it was mostly my mother who raised us.”

The estrangement between father and daughter is so pronounced, Harris has never publicly acknowledged she has a stepmother. Carol Kirlew, 70, is married to Donald Harris and is a former World Bank executive.

Both were born in Jamaica, and now live in a Washington, DC, condo a short drive from the White House, according to public records.

It’s not clear if Donald Harris had been invited to the Democratic convention or if he chose not to attend. He did not return a request for comment Friday.

“At the park, my mother would say, ‘Stay close.’ But my father would say, as he smiled, ‘Run, Kamala, run. Don’t be afraid. Don’t let anything stop you,’ ” Harris said during her speech. “From my earliest years, he taught me to be fearless.”

Her parents split up when she was 8 years old , and she and her younger sister were largely raised by their mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, a breast cancer researcher from India.

When her mother worked long hours while they were living in a small apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area, “she leaned on a trusted circle to help raise us … none of them family by blood, and all of them family by love,” Harris told the cheering crowd of delegates.

Despite the estrangement, an academic who befriended Donald Harris when he was a Fulbright scholar in Brazil in the 1990s said father and daughter share similar economic views.

“I have the impression that the press tends to exaggerate the distance between them in the political sense with people saying that he was much more to the left, more of a social democrat than she is,” said Joanilio Teixeira, an emeritus professor of economics at the University of Brasilia, in an interview with a Brazilian newspaper last month.

Although there is debate as to how leftist Donald’s theories were, he was recently described as a “combative Marxist economist” by the Economist.  

Teixeira said Donald Harris lived with his family in Brazil’s capital for a few months in 1997, and the two became friends over long lunches and barbecues following Harris’ lectures, which mainly focused on the distribution of wealth and inflation.

Teixeira said he visited Harris while he was a professor at Stanford, and the two have continued to stay in touch, he said. Harris retired from the university in 1998 and was named an emeritus professor of economics.

“I am aware, of course, that some of his theories are very present in his daughter,” Teixeira continued. “The question of the distribution of wealth. The question of raising up people of African descent … These issues are very present in what she says.”

But Kamala Harris is seemingly not present in her father’s life. When he was awarded one of Jamaica’s highest distinctions in October 2021 for his work helping the government sort out its economic woes, the senior Harris attended the ceremony with Kirlew, according to Jamaican press reports.

Donald Harris said he was “honored and humbled” to receive the country’s Order of Merit, which had been bestowed on Jamaican musicians Bob Marley and Peter Tosh as well as Cuban leader Fidel Castro in the past.

Born in Brown’s Town, Jamaica, in 1938, Harris studied at the University of the West Indies and the University of London before getting his PhD at the University of California at Berkeley in 1966.

He met Gopalan in the fall of 1962 at a meeting of the Afro-American Association at the school. They married in 1963 and divorced in 1971.

Despite the divorce, Harris took his two daughters for visits with family in Jamaica, and dedicated his 1978 book, “Capital Accumulation and Income Distribution,” to them.

Donald provided a recent picture of himself, Harris and her niece Meena for a 2019 article in Jamaica Global.

In the text, he blamed the California courts for his “hard-fought custody battle,” saying they didn’t respect his equal rights as a father, but added that he never gave up “on my love for my children or [reneged] on my responsibilities as a father.”

But when Kamala Harris entered national politics by running for vice president in the 2020 race, her father stayed out of the picture.

“I have decided to stay out of all the political hullabaloo by not engaging in any interviews with the media,” Donald Harris said in an email to Politico in 2019.

The comment came after his daughter had acknowledged smoking a joint in college in a radio interview with Charlamagne tha God while promoting her memoir, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey.”

“Half my family’s from Jamaica,” she said.

“Are you kidding me?”

Donald Harris was so annoyed by the comment, he issued a statement about it in a Jamaican publication.

“My dear departed grandmothers (whose extraordinary legacy I described in a recent essay on this website), as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,” he wrote in an essay for Jamaica Global.

Kamala Harris’ team did not respond to a request for comment from The Post.

OK. We got a big night ahead. Thank you all so much. Thank you so much. OK. There you go.

Hello, Chicago! Yeah. All right. Something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn’t it? You know, we’re feeling it here in this arena, but it’s spreading across this country we love. A familiar feeling that has been buried too deep for far too long. You know what I’m talking about. It’s the contagious power of hope.

The anticipation, the energy, the exhilaration of once again being on the cusp of a brighter day. The chance to vanquish the demons of fear, division and hate that have consumed us and continue pursuing the unfinished promise of this great nation, the dream that our parents and grandparents fought and died and sacrificed for.

America, hope is making a comeback.

Yeah. But, to be honest, I am realizing that, until recently, I have mourned the dimming of that hope. And maybe you’ve experienced the same feelings, that deep pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future.

And for me, that mourning has also been mixed with my own personal grief. The last time I was here in my hometown was to memorialize my mother — the woman who showed me the meaning of hard work and humility and decency, the woman who set my moral compass high and showed me the power of my own voice.

Folks, I still feel her loss so profoundly. I wasn’t even sure if I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight, but my heart compelled me to be here because of the sense of duty that I feel to honor her memory. And to remind us all not to squander the sacrifices our elders made to give us a better future.

You see, my mom, in her steady, quiet way, lived out that striving sense of hope every single day of her life. She believed that all children, all — all people have value. That anyone can succeed if given the opportunity. She and my father did not aspire to be wealthy. In fact, they were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed. They understood that it wasn’t enough for their kids to thrive if everyone else around us was drowning.
