The dissertation template is provided as a Google Doc. You can download it in MS Word format or make a copy to your Google Drive. You’re also welcome to convert it to whatever format works best for you, such as LaTeX or PDF.

What types of dissertations/theses can this template be used for?

The template follows the standard best-practice structure for formal academic research projects such as dissertations or theses, so it is suitable for the vast majority of degrees, particularly those within the sciences.

Some universities may have some additional requirements, but these are typically minor, with the core structure remaining the same. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to double-check your university’s requirements before you finalise your structure.

Will this work for a research paper?

A research paper follows a similar format, but there are a few differences. You can find our research paper template here .

Is this template for an undergrad, Masters or PhD-level thesis?

This template can be used for a dissertation, thesis or research project at any level of study. It may be slight overkill for an undergraduate-level study, but it certainly won’t be missing anything.

How long should my dissertation/thesis be?

This depends entirely on your university’s specific requirements, so it’s best to check with them. As a general ballpark, Masters-level projects are usually 15,000 – 20,000 words in length, while Doctoral-level projects are often in excess of 60,000 words.

The Dissertation Title Page

The title page of your dissertation or thesis conveys all the essential details about your project, including:

• The title of your project
• Your full name (including student number if required)
• Clarification of whether this is a dissertation or thesis document
• The name of your academic department
• The name of your university
• The degree name that the dissertation or thesis has been written for (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy)
• The date (month and year) that you will submit the document
• The name of your supervisor(s)

This page can also be referred to as the dissertation cover page when your degree program is at the undergraduate or Masters level.

Format of the Title Page

Your university will provide you with the exact formatting requirements of your dissertation title page. This will include how to present the above information but also the font size to use, line spacing and the size of margins. For example, a graduate school may require the title to be in all caps, all text to be double-spaced and margins on the binding side to be 4cm. Don’t include the page number and have all text centred. You may also need to include the university logo. The APA style is commonly referred to for guidance on how to format research documents. This guide from University College London on their requirements is also an interesting read.

Example of a Dissertation Title Page

The example below is what a dissertation title page would usually look like for a Masters degree project in the UK. You can use this as a template when writing your own title page. The format presented here is also applicable for a doctoral dissertation or thesis title page.

The title page may be followed by an approval page, signed by the project chair and any other committee members. After this comes your abstract, presented on a separate page and then your table of contents. Some institutions may also require a copyright page to be included. Whilst the title page doesn’t have a page number, pages after this may use Roman numerals with the traditional page number format starting after your table of contents.

The term partial fulfillment means that this research document was one of several requirements for you to obtain your degree. For a Master’s degree, the other requirements will typically include exams and coursework.

Follow the advice in this guide to ensure your title page is in the correct format before final submission of your research project. This will be a normal part of undergraduate and graduate study.

In the UK, a dissertation, usually around 20,000 words is written by undergraduate and Master’s students, whilst a thesis, around 80,000 words, is written as part of a PhD.

If you’re wondering about making your dissertation cover page, chances are you’re nearing the final stretch of your doctoral journey. Congratulations!

Luckily, making your title page is one of the simplest tasks you’ll have to complete. Generally speaking, there’s a template your institution will use and you just have to fill in your information.

What Should a Dissertation Cover Page Include?

The inner artist in you might want to make your dissertation cover page beautiful: printed in color, maybe with pictures, or with an interesting font or design. However, you’re going to be limited by your university. 

Pretty much every university that I’ve come across has a template and guidelines that you must follow for your dissertation cover page. You may just be filling in things like your title, name, your university’s name, maybe your committee members’ names, and not much more. You won’t have much (if any) creative license.

The advantage of this is, by the time you get to that stage, you may be tired of writing and it will be easier to follow directions than to come up with something creative. Your dissertation cover page doesn’t need to be a work of art. It just needs to convey what the dissertation is about.

Dissertation Cover Page: The Title

The aspect of your dissertation cover page that you have the most control over is the title . It’s also the most important to get right. 

The main thing to remember is, keep the title simple . It should simply tell a person what they’re going to read in the document. Don’t try to intrigue people or be too clever, just tell them directly. Having a straightforward title helps your committee approve your dissertation more quickly.

Over 50% of doctoral candidates don’t finish their dissertations.

Your title should include relevant information that gives the reader a complete picture of what your study was about. Generally speaking, you’ll want to cover a few specific areas.

Quantitative Title Requirements

• Type of relationship between variables.
• Key variables (independent and dependent).
• Population.

Qualitative Title Requirements

• Central conceptual issue investigated.
• Qualitative tradition applied.
• Participant group.

Final Thoughts

While your dissertation title page doesn’t have to be fancy, it’s important that it aligns with your university’s requirements. Take a look at their rubric and, if needed, look at completed dissertations’ title pages as well. If all else fails, ask your mentor for help.

Requirements

• All margins should be 1 inch and must be consistent on all sides of the page.
• All font should be the same size and should be set to either 10 pt. or 12 pt.
• Do not display a page number anywhere on the page.
• Do not use boldface type on the title page.
• Capitalize the title, BY, your name, and either THESIS (for master's thesis) or DISSERTATION (for doctoral dissertations).
• Your name on your title page should match what appears in the University's system.
• The text block beneath THESIS or DISSERTATION should appear as follows:
• Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements
• for the degree of <add earned degree> in <add major>
• with a concentration in <add concentration>
• with a minor in <add minor>
• in the Graduate College of the
• University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, <add year of degree conferral>
• The major must fit entirely onto line 2 of the text block.
• Most students will not include lines 3 or 4. There are very few campus-approved graduate concentrations and graduate minors. (The list of campus-approved graduate minors can be found  here .) If a concentration or minor cannot be verified by the University’s records, it will not be allowed on the title page.
• The year in line 6 of the text block must be the year of the degree conferral period for which the student will deposit (e.g., if a student deposits in December 2015 for the May 2016 graduation period, the year in the text block should be 2016).
• Master’s students will use the heading “Adviser:”, "Advisers:", or “Master’s Committee:”, depending on which is applicable or preferred.
• Doctoral students will use the heading “Doctoral Committee:” to list the final examination committee.
• For committees, the committee chair should be listed first, and the director of research (adviser) should be listed second; all other committee members may be listed in the order preferred by the student or the student’s adviser.
• The committee chair should be indicated by adding a comma and the word “Chair” after the chair’s name. The director of research (if different from chair) should be indicated by adding a comma and the phrase “Director of Research” after the director’s name.
• “Co-Chair” and “Co-Director of Research” designations may be used when applicable.
• Faculty members should be listed with their professorial title (i.e., Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, etc.). The professorial title should be spelled in full (do not abbreviate) and listed before the faculty member’s name.
• Affiliations should be listed only for committee members who are not University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty (i.e., departmental affiliations should not be listed).

Tips for creating an effective dissertation cover page, what are a few must-haves for your thesis and dissertation cover page.

• Title of the project: It should be brief yet comprehensive and reflect the essence of your research work.
• Author/Student’s name: It is essential to mention the name of the author/student who has carried out the research work. This will help in identifying the author of the document.
• Roll number/Student number: This is an important identifier that helps the institute maintain the record of the students.
• Department/Batch/Class: This information helps the institute to categorize the research work based on the department, batch, or class.
• Institution’s name: It is important to mention the name of the institute where the research work has been conducted.
• Details of the requirements: Mentioning whether it is a thesis, final-year project, or dissertation is crucial for the reader to understand the context of the research work.
• Name of the degree: Mentioning the name of the degree (Ph.D. or M.Phil.) will help in identifying the level of the research work.
• Date of submission: It is important to mention the date of submission to establish the timeline of the research work.
• Session: Mentioning the session will help in identifying the academic session during which the research work has been carried out.

• Use [Shift-Enter] to insert a line break within an element, e.g. to add previous undergraduate degrees.
• Ensure there is space between all the elements on the title page. Use punctuation as indicated below.
• The title of the thesis needs to be the same on all documents: the title page; Declaration of Committee page; Results, Approval & Degree recommendation form.
• Avoid using quotation marks around the title.  When necessary, single- or double- quotation marks within a title are permitted.
• Do not include a period after the title.
• Avoid using acronyms; spell out terms fully when possible.
• If your are using a chosen/preferred name, ensure that it is registered with SFU .
• Use the same name on all documentation
• List previous degrees in descending chronological order.
• Each degree must fit on one line. Use abbreviations and punctuation for the degree as shown below.
• The discipline of previous degrees may be added in brackets if there is space.
• Write out the full names of institutions, eg: University of the Fraser Valley
• City/State/Country must be added when part of the institution's name, eg: University of California, Irvine

Substantive Formatting of the Master's Thesis

Popularising summary.

A page with a popularising summary of the master's thesis must be included, written in a way that is understandable to a broad audience and in the language of the thesis. This summary will be uploaded via a mandatory field in the metadata form and does not need to be included in the thesis itself. The length of the summary is limited to one A4 page (3500 characters) and should be submitted without formatting.

The master's thesis must be consistent with respect to bibliography and references. At the end of the thesis, a comprehensive list of bibliographic references must be provided. References to figures, tables, and appendices should also be consistent.

The following items are included in the master's thesis:

• Foreword: This should summarize the general purpose of the work. Additionally, everyone who contributed should be thanked here.
• Contribution Statement (depending on the program): This section of the thesis should indicate the individual contribution and any support and contributions provided by others, such as the supervisor(s), daily advisor, fellow student, etc. Learn more about the contribution statement here .
• Short Summary (max. 2 pages per language): This should summarize the main objectives and conclusions of the master's thesis, in Dutch and English for a Dutch-language master's program, and only in English for an English-language master's program.
• List of Abbreviations and List of Symbols: This should include the main abbreviations and symbols used in the thesis, along with their meanings and units.
• Content: An overview of the content should be provided with references to the correct page numbers (maximum of three sub-levels). All pages before Chapter 1 should be numbered with Roman numerals (I, II, …). From Chapter 1 onward, numbering should be with Arabic numerals (1, 2, …).
• A detailed introduction that, in addition to outlining the approach and methods used, places the research in a broader context.
• Results and discussion of the research.
• A conclusion, which should include a general discussion of the research results. Suggestions for future research can also be included.
• Appendices: These should include parts of the research that are essential but would detract from the readability of the text, such as lengthy mathematical derivations, experimental data, examples, figures, etc.

The font should always be one from the Helvetica Neue or Arial family, as prescribed by the KU Leuven house style. If you wish to work in LaTeX, you can use the template for doctoral theses from the Arenberg Doctoral School .

Submitting the Master's Thesis

The master's thesis must be submitted electronically via KU Loket: workflow for submitting and archiving electronic master's thesis .
