Tornado in a Bottle Science Experiment – Easy to Follow Steps & Video

Wondering how to make a tornado in a bottle? All it takes is a little muscle, some practice and centripetal force and you can easily create one.

Tornado in a Bottle Science Experiment Instructions

Step 1 – Use the funnel to put 3-4 tablespoons of glitter in an empty glass jar. Helpful Tip: The more glitter you use, the better you will be able to see the tornado. And after all, you can never have too much glitter, right?

Step 2 – Next, fill the jar about 3/4 full of water.

Step 3 – Put the lid back on the jar and make sure it is really tight.

Step 4 – Turn the bottle upside down and quickly move the bottle in a circular motion for 10-15 seconds.

Step 5 – Finally, set the bottle down on the table and observe the tornado that has formed. Helpful Tip : It will take some practice to get the tornado to show up as much as the one in the picture above. But even with a little shaking, a child should be able to get the water and glitter to spin around in the bottle.

How Does the Tornado in a Bottle Science Experiment Work

When you spin the bottle in a circular motion it creates a water vortex that looks like a tornado. The water spins around the center of the vortex because of centripetal force.

Centripetal force is any force that causes an object (in this case water) to move in a circular path.

Because there is glitter in the water you can see the spinning water more clearly. The glitter is similar to the dust and debris that are found spinning in an actual tornado.

How to Make a Tornado in a Jar

Follow along with these instructions to learn how to make a tornado in a jar! But first, learn a bit about the science of tornadoes!

Tornado Science for Kids

A tornado (vortex) is formed in the center of a jar when you shake it up. This is due to centripetal force, which forces the water toward the center of the jar. The reason you can see it when you add dish soap is because the soap suds slightly, making the vortex more visible.

The glitter is just for fun.

Tornado in a Bottle Experiment

Tornadoes are violent winds that create a funnel underneath a storm system. As the winds rotate, they often pick up speed, and eventually, they form what is called a funnel cloud — a column of water droplets, dust and other debris with a tapered shape extending from the base of a thunderstorm.

This is a pretty weighty concept to explain to kids, though. It’s much easier to simply let kids observe a tornado, seeing how the winds move and what happens when it starts to die down.

Of course, it’s not safe to take your kids to see a real tornado, so how about the next-best thing? Make a tornado in a bottle. This experiment allows children to mimic the patterns of this weather occurrence without facing any of the dangers a real tornado brings.

Materials for Tornado in a Bottle

To perform this experiment, you will need:

  • A plastic or glass bottle with a narrow top and a cap, such as a clean soda or iced tea bottle

How to Perform the Tornado in a Bottle Experiment

Add water to the bottle until it is filled up to about two inches from the top. Add two squirts of dish soap. Finish it off with a pinch of glitter. Screw the top back onto the bottle.

Turn the bottle upside down. Grasping it by the neck, twirl it in a circular pattern as fast as you can. Stop after about 20 seconds and hold the bottle. You will see a swirling funnel of glitter that looks like a tornado. Have your child watch as it continues to spin in the direction you were moving the bottle.

It may take a couple of tries to get the tornado to function correctly. Once it does, explain to your child why this is happening to help them understand the forces at play with a real tornado.

What Makes the Water Spin?

The water in the bottle is responding to centripetal force, a force that acts on a body moving in a circular motion. The motion is directed toward the center, which is also referred to as the vortex. This is what catches the glitter and makes it move.

Have your child do variations on the experiment, and note whether they make a similar tornado. Have them move the bottle in the opposite direction. Then have them move the bottle up and down. Ask them to predict before they make the movement whether another tornado will form.

Tell your child about other vortexes in nature. Examples include hurricanes and tornadoes that form over rivers, lakes or other bodies of water, which are called waterspouts. See if they can come up with any other places a vortex might occur.

Make Your Own Tornado

  • Fill the jar about 3/4 full with water.
  • Add some food coloring of your choice.
  • Screw the lid on tight (glue it for extra security).
  • Twirl the jar to get the tornado spinning.

Step 1: Fill The Jar About 3/4 Full With Water

Let’s get started with this simple tornado in a jar experiment by pouring some water into a clear glass jar.

Add water into the jar until the jar is about three quarters of the way filled with water from the top.

Step 2: Add Food Coloring

Now put a small drop of food coloring into the water-filled jar.

We decided to use blue food coloring to make the tornado look the most realistic, but you can use whatever color you want.

Just be careful to only add a very small amount of food coloring.

If you add too much, the water will not be transparent enough for you to see the tornado very well.

Step 3: Screw The Lid On Tight

Screw the lid on very tightly to prevent any colored water from leaking out of the jar and making a mess.

If you plan to let your kids keep their tornado in a jar as a long-term toy, then you might even want to use a hot glue gun to secure the lid!

Step 4: Twirl The Jar To Start A Tornado

Now all that is left to do is give the jar a nice little spin to make your own tornado!

Pick up the jar and move it quickly in a circular motion to get the water spinning fast inside.

Then set the jar down on a level surface and watch as the water inside creates a tornado by sucking air bubbles into the middle of the jar!

Repeat the process over and over as many times as you want. You can even have a challenge to see who can make the biggest, strongest tornado!

What Is The Science Behind A Tornado In A Jar?

Your tornado in a jar is much safer than a real-life tornado of course, but the science behind how it forms is actually very similar to a real tornado!

When the jar is shaken in a circular motion, it will make the water inside spin very quickly.

The water in the center of the jar moves slower than the water near the outside of the jar and a vortex forms inside the jar.

Since there is air and water in the jar, the circulation of the water pulls some of the air above down into the center of the spinning water.

This is what creates the appearance of a tornado inside the jar!

What Causes A Tornado?

Tornadoes form when warm, moist air rises through an updraft of a thunderstorm and the air begins to spin.

The spinning motion of a tornado happens thanks to something called wind shear .

Wind shear is when the wind direction in the atmosphere changes directions as the air in the updraft moves higher into the sky.

If the air in the thunderstorm updraft spins fast enough, it will create a funnel cloud that will drop down out of the clouds and touch the ground as a tornado!

The stronger these winds are that are changing directions at different levels in the cloud, along with how strong the updraft of air rising from the ground will determine if you have an EF-0 tornado or an EF-5 tornado!

In our tornado in a jar experiment, the faster and stronger we shake the jar in a circular motion, the larger and stronger your tornado will also be!

In this month’s STEAM Experiment for Kids, we’re reusing the empty soda bottles from the Soda Geyser Experiment last month to make a tornado in a bottle!

As you explain this experiment to your kids, it’s a good time to talk to your kids about tornadoes and your tornado safety plan if you live in an area that is prone to tornadoes.

This is one of those sensory bottle activities that provides endless fun for the kids. You’ll be surprised at how long they will want to sit and watch the water swirl around like a tornado and try it over, and over, and over again.

Let’s Talk about the Science

Tornadoes are a fascinating and frightening meteorological phenomenon. Tornadoes are a violently rotating column of air that when mixed with rain droplets appears as a funnel coming from storm clouds. They are the most violent atmospheric storms.

Every year around 1,200 tornadoes are recorded in the United States. That’s why it’s important to have a tornado safety plan in place for your family in case a tornado occurs near you. For more information on tornadoes head to the National Severe Storm Laboratory website .

The “tornado” we see in the bottle in this experiment is really a vortex. The vortex is created when the liquid moves in a circular motion around a counterpoint. Gravity pulls the liquid down while air rises through the center of the vortex.

This is a great activity for kids age 1+. Younger kids will observe and may want to play with the bottles (which is great!), and older kids will be able to create the tornado themselves.

Make sure to have towels on hand in case of spills and leaks to prevent slips and falls. Also, if using food coloring, be sure to protect surfaces and clothing from stains.

Materials Needed:

  • 2 identical plastic bottles (We tested 2L and 16oz – both worked great and the smaller bottles were perfect for little hands)
  • Food coloring ( optional )
  • Small toys – such as glitter, beads, buttons, toy animals, etc ( optional )
  • Tornado Tube ( optional )

  • Explain to your child what is a tornado, and what your tornado safety plan is at your home. Here are some notes on what to say: “A tornado is a funnel cloud that can form during a severe thunderstorm. It produces high winds and can cause lots of destruction, but they are also very rare. If a tornado warning is issued while we are at home, we will hide together in the pantry. This is our innermost room in the house with no windows.”

2. Fill one bottle almost to the top with water

3. Add a few drops of food coloring to the water

4. Duct tape the empty bottle to the full water bottle (opening to opening)

5. Flip the bottle over (so the bottle with the water is on top), what happens? The water starts to go to the bottom bottle slowly while “glugs” of air come up.

6. Rotate the bottle, so the water is once again in the top bottle, then rotate it in a tight, clockwise circular motion. As you rotate the bottle a tornado should form as the water moves into the lower bottle.

7. Flip the bottles over and try again!

8. Repeat as many times as you like, changing small things to see how they affect the timing and tornado (vortex) formation. Here are some examples of fun variations you can try:

8a) Rotate the bottle in the counterclockwise direction (the opposite direction as your did previously)

8b) Time how long it takes for the water to completely empty from one bottle to the other. Does the vortex make it go faster or slower?

8c) Add dish soap (this will make the vortex more noticeable as it fills with bubbles). Even better – add lamp oil if you have it (this will color only the tornado in the bottle)

8d) Add items to your water bottle (such as glitter, beads, beans, small toy animals, etc…), and observe how they move with the water as the vortex forms. Do they get sucked into the vortex or do they remain in the perimeter of the bottle?

8e) Try it using the Tornado Tube (available from Amazon ) instead of duct tape. This should make it much easier to attach the bottle and you will be less likely to have leaks.

What Happened:

The formation of the vortex makes it easier for the air to enter the top bottle and water to exit into the bottom bottle. The air comes up through the hole in the middle of the vortex and the water pours out around the edges of the bottle opening. If you don’t have a vortex, the air and water have to take turns entering and exiting the bottle making bubbles and moving much slower.

The experiment is easy to do with very few materials required, and you don’t need a strong science background to do this and explain it to your kids (just use my notes from the What Happened section above!).

Tornadoes are an interesting natural weather pattern that tends to draw in a lot of questions and curiosity. If you’re wondering how to make a tornado in a bottle with two bottles, you’re going to learn all about it here.

The kids and I had a blast creating this fun experiment and it didn’t feel like school at all. This makes for a great hands on learning activity.

DIY Tornado in a Bottle

What you will need to make your  Tornado Experiment , is in this picture below. However, I have it displayed in a recipe list form to print out towards the bottom of the page. Have Fun!

Supplies Needed:

  • Two large bottles, with at least one fitting cap, about 2 litters (we used plant milk bottles).
  • Transparent Duct tape
  • Green glitter, we used about 2 teaspoons
  • Sharp knife or scissors
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon dish soap… we chose to use this because we like how it slows down the vortex and takes this from a tornado at first to almost a calming bottle to watch. We love the way it slowly swirls the glitter within the bubbles!

Leaving the soap out will speed up the process and give you a larger tornado to watch-that you can then swirl and watch quickly over and over without waiting.

How to Make a Tornado in a Jar

Before starting, make sure the bottles are completely washed out.

Use a knife or scissors to cut a hole in the center of one of the caps. We did them by basically twisting the knife to drill into the cap. You want the opening to be about a ½ inch.

Next, twist on the lid.

  • Fill the second, capless, bottle about 3/4s full and then add the soap and glitter.

Make certain to let the kids help with the process and steps.

They can easily do this from start to finish with parental supervision.

Once those are done, it’s time to begin building.

Place the capped bottle upside down on the water-filled bottle and then firmly hold together, perfectly aligned, while wrapping the duct tape around the opening/necks of the two bottles to connect them. You want to make sure you have a super tight connection so there won’t be any leaks.

We made this several days ago, experimented with it many times each day, and have had zero leaks using this exact method.

Weather Science Activities

Once your bottles are connected and tape is completely secure, hold the neck of the bottles where they connect, quickly flip the bottles so the bottle with the water is on top and swirl the top of the bottle for about 10 seconds and then quickly and gently set down on a flat surface.

Within about 5 seconds the water should find its way into a vortex tornado and make its way down into the lower, previously empty bottle.

How to make a tornado in a bottle with two bottles

This super cool tornado in a bottle activity is so exciting for preschoolers and kindergarten. Add a Tornado Experiment to your weather preschool theme or weather science unit study for fun and educational hands on learning.

How to Make a tornado experiment with bottles

  • Two large bottles with at least one fitting cap, about 2 litters (we used plant milk bottles).
  • Clear Duct tape
  • Green glitter we used about 2 teaspoons
  • Make sure the bottles are completely washed out.
  • Use a knife or scissors to cut a hole in the center of one of the caps. We did they by basically twisting the knife to drill into the cap. You want the opening to be about a ½ inch.
  • Twist on this lid.

Place the capped bottle upside down on the water filled bottle and then firmly hold together, perfectly aligned, while wrapping the duct tape around the opening/necks of the two bottles to connect them. You want to make sure you have a super tight connection so there wont be any leaks. We made this days ago, experimented with it many times each day and have had zero leaks using this exact method.

Optional: 1 teaspoon dish soap… we chose to use this because we like how it slows down the vortex and takes this from a tornado at first to almost a calming bottle to watch.

We love the way it slowly swirls the glitter within the bubbles! Leaving the soap out will speed up the process and give you a larger tornado to watch-that you can then swirl and watch quickly over and over without waiting. Your call!

Once your bottles are connected and tape is completely secure, hold the neck of the bottles where they connect, quickly flip the bottles so the bottle with the water is on top and swirl the top of the bottle for about 10 seconds and then quickly and gently set down on a flat surface. Within about 5 seconds the water should find its way into a vortex tornado and make its way down into the lower, previously empty bottle.

When it comes to kids’ science , it doesn’t get much simpler than making a tornado in a jar. This five minute activity uses just two common household ingredients and has a big wow factor. It’s easy AND exciting. Gotta’ love that kind of kids’ science !

Make a Tornado in a Jar

To whip up our mini tornado,  we grabbed a clean mason jar and our supplies:

  • 3 cups of tap water
  • 1 teaspoon of dish soap
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • Glitter or other small objects {optional}

We filled the mason jar with water – making sure to leave about an inch of space at the top.

Then we poured in the dish soap and vinegar and closed the lid.

NOTE: I gave the cap a double check just to make sure that our tornado wouldn’t get free and make a big mess.

Holding one hand on top and one below, we swirled the jar for about 5 seconds and then set it down on the table to watch the tornado do its thing. So simple and easy.

To add some extra “wow,” try adding glitter or mini Legos to the jar!

The Science Behind It

When you spin the water in the jar, it creates a vortex in the center.

As the water spins, centripetal force causes the water to spin around that vortex making a mini tornado. Hurricanes have a vortex, too!

Trap A Tornado Cool Science Experiment

In this fun and easy cool science experiment, we’re going to trap a tornado in a bottle. 

  • Two 2-liter plastic soda bottles
  • Metal washer
  • Glitter, beads, food coloring

Instructions:

  • Fill one of the bottles about three quarters of the way with water.
  • Add any glitter, beads, and food coloring you want to the water. Be sure the beads are small enough to easily fit through the center of the washer.
  • Center the washer over the mouth of the bottle with water.
  • Now position the empty bottle upside down so its mouth is centered over the washer.
  • Use the duct tape to secure the bottles together.
  • Flip the bottles over so the empty one is on the bottom and observe what happens.
  • Flip the bottles one more time, but this time give the bottles a swirl and observe what happens.

How it Works:

When the bottles are flipped and positioned directly above one another, the water has a difficult time transitioning from the top bottle into the bottom bottle. When you twirl the bottles, a vortex is created that allows for an easier exchange of water and air between the bottles. 

Make This A Science Project:

Add small items to the water like Styrofoam beads. Add sugar or salt to the water. Use vegetable oil instead of water. Try different sized washers. Try different sized bottles.

History of the Adygea Republic

The territory of Adygea has been inhabited since ancient times. Abadzehskaya Paleolithic site is located in Maykop district. Also there are a lot of archaeological sites of Bronze and Iron Ages. Maykop archaeological culture is well known.

A lot of unique items were found during the excavation of the hills near the village of Ulyap in Krasnogvardeysky district. Most of the precious items excavated while Adygea was part of Krasnodar krai and known as “Scythian gold” or “Kuban gold” can be found in museums outside of Adygea.

The indigenous Adyg population’s ancestors are considered to be ancient Meots, Sinds, Aheys, Zikhs, Kasogs, and Kerkets residing in the region. As a result of the Caucasian wars (1763-1864), the majority of the Adygs (Circassians) were exiled to the Ottoman Empire. The rest of the Adygs were settled in the lowlands, on the left bank of the Kuban River.

Adygea was formed on July 27, 1922 as Cherkesskaya (Adygeyskaya) Autonomous Oblast (province) with the center in Krasnodar. From August 24, 1922 till August 13, 1928, it was Adygeyskaya (Cherkesskaya) Autonomous Oblast, and then Adygeyskaya Autonomous Oblast.

From August 2, 1924 till December 28, 1934, it was part of the North Caucasian krai, then, till September 13, 1937, part of Azov-Chernomorsky krai and finally - part of Krasnodar krai.

April 10, 1936, Maykop became the capital of the region. April 28, 1962, Tulsky (now Maikopsky) district of Krasnodar krai was joined to the region. October 5, 1990, Adygeyskaya Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was declared. Since 1992, it is the Republic of Adygea.

In December 1991 - January 1992, deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Adygea were elected. It was the first Parliament in the history of Adygea. In 1993, it was reformed into Legislative Assembly (Khase) and, in 1995, - into State Council - Khase. The Constitution of the Republic of Adygea was adopted by Legislative Assembly - Khase on March 10, 1995.

The Adygea Republic - Features

Adygea is located in the northern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. The northern part of the region consists mainly of plains while the southern part has mountains. The main river of the region is the Kuban River. The highest mountains are Chugush (3,238 meters) and Fisht (2,868 meters).

The climate is moderately warm, the average temperature in January is minus 2 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 28 degrees Celsius.

The republic is rich in forest resources, which occupy more than one third of the republic’s territory (the southern part), and building materials (gravel, sand, clay, limestone). The republic has small reserves of natural gas. In the mountainous part of the republic there are small deposits of gold, ore materials.

Adygea is an industrial-agrarian republic with such industries as food processing, woodworking, pulp and paper, mechanical engineering and metalworking. The basis of the agro-industrial production is crop production, pig, sheep, poultry, and horse breeding. Several railways pass through the territory of the republic.

National composition of the population according to the 2010 census: Russians (63.6%), Adygs (Circassians) (25.8%), Armenians (3.7%). Most of the population of Adygea profess Orthodoxy and Islam. The Slavic population - Orthodox Christians, Circassians - Sunni Muslims.

There are two local universities in the republic: Adygea State University and Maikop State Technological University.

Attractions of the Adygea Republic

Adygea is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This region is rich in waterfalls, caves, rock formations suitable for climbing, gorges, canyons, rivers, alpine meadows, pine and fir forests.

The territory of the republic is a region of mixed tourism. It is rich in interesting natural areas and objects: the Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve located in the Republic of Adygea and Krasnodar krai, the National Park “Gornaya (Mountainous) Adygea”, a number of unique natural sites.

Khadzhokhsky Gorge, a canyon of the Belaya River, begins in the vicinity of Maikop. Near the canyon there are waterfalls of the Rufabgo stream.

In the mountain village of Guzeripl, on the territory of the Caucasus Nature Reserve, you can find one of the most famous dolmens, they can also be found on Bogatyrskaya glade. There are sites of ancient man, remains of fortresses, alpine gardens, and sources of mineral water “narzan”, which in Circassian means “drink of the gods (narts).”

Adygea is a great place to practice active tourism: hang gliding, caving, rafting, mountain climbing, rock climbing, hiking, canyoning.
