Thangalaan review: Vikram delivers a spellbinding performance in this Pa Ranjith film

Thangalaan review: pa ranjith's film is intertwined with some fantasy and mystical realism. a must watch for vikram fans..

Thangalaan review: When we head into a Pa Ranjith film, we know that we can expect something that is different. Thangalaan starring Vikram, Pravathy Thiruvothu, Pasupathy and Malavika Mohanan is a historical drama that is set during the British rule and revolves around the Kolar Gold Fields in the late 1800s. British ‘dorai’ Clement has a hunger for gold and having heard of the ancient gold mines of Tipu Sultan (Kolar, Karnataka), he wants a group of labourers for the mining. He is told it is the tribals (pariahs) at Veppur village (North Arcot) who have been traditionally involved in mining and he has to convince the people there to take up this job. He even says he will share the spoils with the villagers to take them out of poverty.

Thangalaan (Vikram), his wife (Parvathy) and the others in Veppur wotk hard on their land but don’t reap the rewards - it’s the local mirazdar who does. Oppressed and treated like slaves, it is the need for self-respect and a better life that pushes Thangalaan to take up Clement’s offer. But the tribals also fear the existence of a strong, supernatural mystical power called Aarthi (Malavika Mohanan) who lives in the forests and hills to protect the gold. Thangalaan has experienced the fierce power of Aarthi on an earlier sojourn to mine gold but he believes that this time will be different. With Thangalaan leading the way, the group heads to Kolar with Clement to see if can find gold. Now, does Thangalaan find gold? Does the story of Aarthi turn out to be a myth? Does Britisher Clement help the tribals get a better life?

The verdict

Pa Ranjith has once again given us a film in a completely new genre - Thangalaan is a period film that is intertwined with some fantasy and mystical realism. The characters and the setting are raw and rustic and it adds to the allure of this drama which is based on the Kolar gold fields and the labourers who worked there. Thangalaan is definitely a visual extravaganza - right from the costumes to the make-up and the stark settings of the dry, arid land and the poverty-stricken look of the people creates a strong impact. You feel the suffering and desperation of the tribals just by looking at them and Ranjith and his team must be praised for this. The first half of the film takes its own time to set up the stage and this slow pacing is an issue. The second half meanders and is not as gripping as one expects which is a let-down. The hallucinations the characters face also get a bit jarring. Given that the characters speak a different kind of Tamil, it’s not easy to follow the dialogues which is a drawback. Thangalaan has a great new concept and fine performances but could have been more engaging.

Vikram has outdone himself in this film as Thangalaan and shows us how talented and committed he is, yet again. Whether it the emotional scenes or the action ones, Vikram makes you feel every emotion he goes through. Parvathy and Pasupathy are excellent as well and all three have mouthed the period Tamil dialogues with extreme elan. Malavika Mohanan is good in her role too.

Music director GV Prakash’s tunes and BGM for the film are really apt and he proves how he can adapt his style effortlessly across genres. The cinematography by A Kishor Kumar is a plus for the film but the editing could have been tighter.

Director Pa Ranjith has always been the voice for marginalised communities and themes of social reform, social justice, caste oppression and discrimination, often find their way into his films. His central character is usually an underprivileged person and Thangalaan is no different. Thangalaan, may not be perfect, but it’s a film that’s unforgettable thanks to its excellent performances, especially Vikram’s.

'అపరిచితుడు', 'ఐ' సినిమాలతో తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు బాగా తెలిసిన విక్రమ్.. సాహసోపేతమైన పాత్రలకు పెట్టింది పేరు. ఇప్పుడు అలానే 'తంగలాన్' అనే మూవీలో ఓ ఆటవిక తెగ మనిషిగా నటించాడు. టీజర్, ట్రైలర్‌తోనే డిఫరెంట్ ఎక్స్‌పీరియెన్స్ అందివ్వబోతున్నామని ఫీల్ కలిగించారు. ఇప్పుడీ చిత్రం ఆగస్టు 15న థియేటర్లలోకి వచ్చింది. ఇది ఎలా ఉందనేది రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం.

కథేంటి? అది 1850. బ్రిటీషర్లు మన దేశాన్ని పాలిస్తుంటారు. వెప్పూర్ అనే ఊరిలో తంగలాన్ (విక్రమ్).. తన కుటుంబంతో కలిసి బతుకుతుంటాడు. అనుకోని పరిస్థితుల్లో బంగారం వెతకడం కోసం క్లెమెంట్ అనే ఇంగ్లీష్ దొరతో కలిసి తంగలాన్ వెళ్లాల్సి వస్తుంది. ఈ ప్రయాణంలో వింత వింత అనుభవాలు ఎదురవుతాయి. మరి తంగలాన్ చివరకు బంగారం కనిపెట్టాడా? అరణ్య, ఆరతితో ఇతడికి ఉన్న సంబంధమేంటి అనేదే మెయిన్ స్టోరీ.

ఎలా ఉందంటే? 'దురాశ దుఃఖానికి చేటు'.. ఈ సామెత చాలాసార్లు వినే ఉంటాం. ఇదే పాయింట్‌తో తీసిన సినిమా 'తంగలాన్'. కేజీఎఫ్ సినిమా మీరు చూసే ఉంటారు. కోలార్ జిల్లాలోని ఓ చోట టన్నుల కొద్ది బంగారం దొరుకుతుంది. అయితే అదంతా ప్రస్తుతంలో జరిగిన కథలా తీశారు. 'తంగలాన్' మాత్రం ఏకంగా వందల ఏళ్ల క్రితం జరిగిన నిజ జీవిత సంఘటనల స్ఫూర్తితో తీశారు.

'తంగలాన్', అతడి కుటుంబం, చుట్టూ ఉన్న పరిస్థితులని పరిచయం చేస్తూ సినిమా మొదలుపెట్టడం వరకు బాగానే ఉంది. కొంతసేపటి తర్వాత తంగలాన్.. తన కూతురికి ఓ కథ చెప్పడం.. బంగారం కోసం తన తాత, నాగిని జాతి స్త్రీతో పోరాడటం లాంటివి చెబుతాడు. అయితే సినిమాలో వైవిధ్యముంది కానీ ఎక్కడ కూడా కనెక్ట్ కాలేకపోతాం. మొదటిది సుధీర్ఘంగా సాగే సన్నివేశాలైతే, రెండోది దర్శకుడు అసలేం చెప్పాలనుకున్నాడో ఎంతకీ అర్థం కాకపోవడం.

ప్రస్తుతం డిఫరెంట్ కాన్సెప్ట్ సినిమాలదే ట్రెండ్. అంత మాత్రాన నేల విడిచి సాము చేయడం కరెక్ట్ కాదు. ప్రేక్షకుడు కనెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా మూవీ తీయాలి. ఈ విషయంలో 'తంగలాన్' ఆమాద దూరంలో ఆగిపోయింది. దాదాపు రెండున్నర గంటల నిడివి.. కానీ నాలుగు గంటల చిత్రాన్ని చూస్తున్నామనే ఫీలింగ్ కలుగుతుంది. ఎక్కడో 18వ శతాబ్దంలో మొదలైన స్టోరీ కాస్త 5 శతాబ్దం దగ్గరకు వెళ్లి ఆగుతుంది. హీరోకి అప్పుడప్పుడు కలలో కొందరు మనుషులు కనిపిస్తుంటారు. ఇందుకు కారణాన్ని క్లైమాక్స్‌లో రివీల్ చేస్తారు. కానీ అప్పటికే ఎగ్జైట్‌మెంట్ చచ్చిపోయింటుంది.

ఇందులో హీరోని పల్లెటూరిలో పనిచేసే వాడిగా తొలుత చూపిస్తారు. కొన్నిసీన్ల తర్వాత ఇతడికి బ్రిటీషర్ల మాట్లాడిన ఇంగ్లీష్‌ చాలా సులభంగా అర్థమైపోతుంది. ఇక్కడ లాజిక్ మిస్సయిపోయారు. అలానే వర్ణ, కుల వివక్ష గురించి సినిమాలో అక్కడక్కడ చూపించిన సీన్లు బాగున్నాయి.

ఎవరెలా చేశారు? తంగలాన్‌గా విక్రమ్ తప్ప ఎవరూ ఊహించలేం! ఎందుకంటే ఈ పాత్రలో అలా అదరగొట్టేశాడు. మధ్యలో కొన్ని సీన్లలో తప్పితే అసలు ఒంటిపై బట్టలే ఉండవు. మేకప్ కూడా ఏం ఉండదు. ఇలాంటి పాత్రని టాలీవుడ్‌లో కొందరు హీరోలు.. జీవితంలో చేయలేరేమో! తంగలాన్ భార్యగా చేసిన మలయాళ నటి పార్వతి తిరువత్తు.. ఉన్నంతలో ఓకే. నాగిని జాతి నాయకురాలు ఆరతిగా మాళవిక మోహనన్ వేరే లెవల్. స్క్రీన్‌పై ఆమె కనిపిస్తుంటే భయమేస్తుంది. మిగిలిన పాత్రధారులు కష్టాన్ని కూడా మర్చిపోలేం.

టెక్నికల్‌గా చూసుకుంటే 'తంగలాన్' బ్రిలియంట్ మూవీ. ఆర్ట్, కాస్ట్యూమ్ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్స్ ప్రాణం పెట్టేశారు. జీవీ ప్రకాశ్ కుమార్ తన సంగీతంతో సినిమాని బాగానే ఎలివేట్ చేశాడు. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ కూడా బాగుంది. మిగిలిన విభాగాలతో పాటు డైరెక్షన్ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్ కూడా చాలా కష్టపడింది. కాకపోతే ఈ తరహా మూవీస్ అందరికీ నచ్చవు. డిఫరెంట్ మూవీస్ ఇష్టపడే వాళ్లకు 'తంగలాన్' మంచి ఆప్షన్. ఫైనల్‌గా చెప్పొచ్చేది ఏంటంటే కష్టం కనిపించింది కానీ చాలా సాగదీత అయిపోయింది!

Simbaa Review: జ‌గ‌ప‌తిబాబు, అన‌సూయ ప్ర‌ధాన పాత్ర‌ల్లో న‌టించిన సింబా మూవీ శుక్ర‌వారం థియేట‌ర్ల‌లో రిలీజైంది. సంప‌త్ నంది క‌థ‌ను అందించిన ఈ మూవీకి ముర‌ళీ మ‌నోహ‌ర్ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించాడు.

Simbaa Review: జ‌గ‌ప‌తిబాబు, అన‌సూయ (Anasuya) ప్ర‌ధాన పాత్ర‌ల్లో న‌టించిన మూవీ సింబా. సైక‌లాజిక‌ల్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ క‌థాంశంతో రూపొందిన ఈ మూవీకి ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సంప‌త్ నంది (Sampath Nandi) క‌థ‌, డైలాగ్స్ అందించారు. ముర‌ళీ మ‌నోహ‌ర్ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించాడు. శుక్ర‌వారం ప్రేక్ష‌కుల ముందుకొచ్చిన ఈ మూవీ ఎలా ఉంది? జ‌గ‌ప‌తిబాబు, అన‌సూయ హిట్ కొట్టారా? అంటే?

చిక్కుముడులు రివీల్‌...

అక్షిక పాత్ర ప‌రిచ‌యం, ఓ వ్య‌క్తిని ఆమె మ‌ర్డ‌ర్ చేసే సీన్‌తో సినిమా ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్‌గా మొద‌లుపెట్టారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. ఈ కేసునుసాల్వ్ చేయాల‌ని అనుకున్న వాళ్లు కూడా హ‌త్య‌ల‌కు పాల్ప‌డే ట్విస్ట్ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. అనురాగ్ ఇన్వేస్టిగేష‌న్ చేసే సీన్స్‌తో అనేక ప్ర‌శ్న‌లు, చిక్కుముడుల‌ను వేసుకుంటూ వెళ్లిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సెకండాఫ్‌లో వాటికి ఆన్స‌ర్ ఇచ్చాడు.

వీటి వెనుక ఎవ‌రున్న‌ది రివీల్ చేసే సీన్‌ను రాసుకున్న తీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. బ‌యోలాజిక‌ల్ మెమ‌రీ పాయింట్ ప్ర‌ధానంగా సెకండాఫ్‌ను అల్లుకున్నారు. అనుభ‌వ‌జ్ఞులైన న‌టీన‌టులు, టెక్నిక‌ల్ టీమ్‌ను వాడుకుంటూ టిఫిక‌ల్‌ కాన్సెప్ట్‌ను అర్థ‌వంతంగా చెప్పేందుకు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ప‌డిన క‌ష్టం తెర‌పై క‌నిపిస్తుంది.

ఈజీగా ఊహించేలా...

సినిమా కాన్సెప్ట్ కొత్త‌గా ఉన్న ట్రీట్‌మెంట్ విష‌యంలో కొన్నిసార్లు రొటీన్‌గా అడుగులు వేశారు మేక‌ర్స్‌. సీరియ‌ల్ కిల్లింగ్స్ వెనుక ఎవ‌రున్నార‌న్న‌ది ఈజీగానే ఊహించేలా ఉండ‌టం సినిమాకు మైన‌స్‌గా మారింది. జ‌గ‌ప‌తి బాబు పాత్రకు సంబంధించిన సీన్స్‌, డైలాగ్‌లో ఎమోష‌న్స్ అంత‌గా పండ‌లేద‌నిపిస్తుంది.

సెకండాఫ్‌లో ఎంట్రీ...

ఈ సినిమాలో జ‌గ‌ప‌తిబాబు మెయిన్ రోల్ అంటూ ప్ర‌చారం చేసింది సినిమా యూనిట్‌. కానీ ఆయ‌న పాత్ర సెకండాఫ్‌లోనే సినిమాలో క‌నిపిస్తుంది. ప‌ర్యావ‌ర‌ణ ప్రేమికుడిగా ఆయ‌న చెప్పై డైలాగ్స్ ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తాయి.

అక్షిక‌గా డిఫ‌రెంట్ వేరియేష‌న్స్ ఉన్న క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో అన‌సూయ క‌నిపించింది. వ‌శిష్ట‌సింహా, శ్రీనాథ్‌, దివితో పాటు ప్ర‌తి ఒక్క‌రూ త‌మ ప‌రిధుల మేర న‌టించారు. గౌత‌మి, క‌స్తూరి వంటి సీనియ‌ర్ హీరోయిన్లు క‌నిపించేది కొద్ది సేపే అయినా వారి న‌ట‌నానుభ‌వం సినిమాకు హెల్ప‌యింది.

Mr Bachchan X (Twitter) Review: Directed by Harish Shankar, his other remake film titled 'Mr Bachchan' featured Massraja Ravi Teja in the lead role. 'Thangalaan' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Words

After the success of two-part Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan', Chiyaan Vikram is back with 'Thangalaan', an action-adventure film, directed by Pa Ranjith of 'Kabali' and 'Madras' fame. The multilingual film is jointly produced by Studio Green, in collaboration with Neelam Productions and Jio Studios.

Apart from Vikram, the film has Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy, Hari Krishnan Anbudurai and Sampath Ram in the cast.

The movie has GV Prakash Kumar's music, Selva RK's editing and A Kishor Kumar's cinematography.

Story Set during the British Raj era, the story is about a fierce tribal leader named Thangalaan who is drawn into a battle against an apparent sorceress after assisting a British general in the quest for gold in their village.

Thangalaan and his tribe join forces with Lord Clement, a British General, to locate gold hidden in their village. However, their actions invoke the wrath of Aarathi, a mysterious and feared sorceress. As calamities begin to strike the villagers, fueled by legends that warn, "seeking gold here is seeking death," Thangalaan takes it upon himself to confront Aarathi and end the chaos.

Despite the spreading stories of monsters haunting the land, the British officer remains determined to find the gold. Thangalaan, convinced that Aarathi is the source of the turmoil, sets out to stop her with all his might.

The film is inspired by the real history of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), discovered by the British two centuries ago. The British exploited the land, looting its riches and oppressing the local people.

Rajasekar: #Thangalaan - The scene where women for the first time felt privileged wearing a blouse talks volumes about @beemji standing for the oppressed not just caste but also for the gender! His political inclination towards BR Ambedkar is very much evident. #Thangalaan first half - @beemji once again proves he is a unique voice here in Indian cinema. The way he subtly registers how Buddhism was destroyed here in India, how the land of the working class was once immorally taken away from them by kings in the name of Brahmadeya, Devadana, etc., (Google if you don't know) will be an eye opener for those who have sound ears and eyes that are willing to see the truth. Later from Kings, it's the Zamindars who once again take the lands of the workings class in the form of tax and other illegal means!

@chiyaan is extraordinary 🔥, he has given his heart, soul and everything to the film! @MalavikaM_ is super impressive , not an easy role to play. @parvatweets is as usual exhibited a great performance. @gvprakash proves that he is the best in the business for such metaphorically executed films!

PS: Audiences should come keeping in the mind that they are not going to watch a regular vannila cinema!

Tollywood star actor Balakrishna is back with another powerful movie, Veera Simha Reddy. Directed by Gopichand Malineni, the movie hit screens today. Let’s see how the film is.

Jaya Simha Reddy (Balakrishna) lives with his mother, Meenakshi (Honey Rose), in Istanbul. He falls in love with Eesha (Shruti Haasan) and decides to marry her. Then Meenakshi reveals the identity of Jaya’s father, Veera Simha Reddy, who lives in Rayalaseema and rules Pulicharla. Bhanumathi (Varalaxmi) and Pratap Reddy (Duniya Vijay) want to kill Veera Simha Reddy for the past 30 years. Why do they want to kill Veera? Who is Bhanumathi? Why did Veera Simha Reddy leave his wife and son? All these questions will be answered in the main movie.

Plus Points:

The first plus point to mention is Nandamuri Balakrishna. He solely lifts the entire film on his shoulders. The royal look of Balayya, his charisma, swag, and style are the biggest assets. The dialogue delivery and his aggressive nature in action sequences are powerful. Balakrishna once again proved that he is the god of the masses. His performance in emotional scenes, especially in the second half, needs to be appreciated. He also surprises with his energetic dance moves in a couple of songs.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s performance as Bhanumathi will surprise audiences. She has done many aggressive roles earlier but, her character is designed in a good manner in this movie and her face-off scenes with Balayya are terrific and she aces them. Her performance in the second half is one of the major assets of the movie.

The other character that needs to be appreciated is Pratap Reddy, played by Duniya Vijay, who wants to take revenge on Veera Simha Reddy. His ruthlessness is showcased in a wonderful way. This is his Tollywood debut film, and the TFI witnesses another outstanding performer in the role of a villain. His face-off scenes with Balakrishna are good to watch, and they are definitely whistle worthy.

Honey Rose makes a decent debut and she gets a good scope to perform in many scenes. Lal as Siddappa, Naveen Chandra as Sekhar and others justified their respective roles.

The screenplay is racy in the first half and the director designs each and every character very well. With this film, one can feel that Gopichand can also direct an out-and-out action entertainer. Songs are good and so is the background score. Ram and Lakshman once again proved that they can design stunts that make people sit on the edge of their seats.

Minus Points:

The story falls in the first place in this aspect. The director chooses a standard story that was seen in many movies earlier. But, by writing a neat screenplay, he runs the show very well. The second half is a bit lengthy and draggy compared to the first half. In the meantime, it’s predictable too. Most of the scenes in the second half should have been chopped off, especially in the flashback episode.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar gets a meaty role in this movie but her old look is not that much impressive. She looks pale in many scenes and the makeup artists should have taken better care of her look.

Shruti Haasan is just limited to songs and a few scenes. She is impressive as a dancer but the director should have written a few more scenes for her, at least in the second half. Eeswari Rao is of no use in the film.

Technical Aspects:

The director is a winner in writing a terrific screenplay that runs well in the first half and slows down in the latter half. The second half is laggy in many places. The director should have concentrated more on the story, which can make the film more interesting.

Some scenes in the flashback episode need to be chopped off to make the film a better experience. Camerawork by Rishi Punjabi and score by Thaman are praiseworthy. They made the movie a terrific one with their outstanding work. The art department also gives its best. The production values are so rich and you can see them on the big screen.

On the whole, Veera Simha Reddy is a decent action entertainer that has all the commercial elements to entertain Balakrishna fans. Balakrishna as Veera Simha Reddy is outstanding, and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar also stuns everyone with her performance. The second half disappoints much, and if it had been engaging like the first half, the film would have been a blockbuster at the box office. It’s a feast for fans, and it would be a decent experience for action lovers. Give it a watch this Sankranthi to enjoy the mass of Balayya.
