This section contains tuition fees for students enrolled at Imperial College London in the 2022–2023 academic session.

Please note that fees are charged by year of entry to the College and not year of study.

UK Research and Innovation have confirmed their indicative fee for 2022–2023 at £4,596.00. This fee will increase annually by an amount linked to inflation (currently, the measure used is the GDP deflator). Fees for subsequent years of study may be higher than the fees listed here. Imperial College London reserves the right to amend these fees following the release of the indicative fee by the UKRI. For more information on the UK Research and Innovation indicative fees please see the UKRI website .

European Union students (not including Ireland) will no longer be able to claim UK Government funding or the lower EU (Home) fee rates for programmes starting from 1st August 2021. European Union students will therefore be required to meet the Non-Home fee rate. Continuing students, who commence prior to 1st August 2021, will retain their fees and funding for the duration of the programme. For more information please see  www.gov.uk/government/news/student-support-in-england .

The fees for continuing Home PG Taught and Research Masters students usually increase annually by the RPI value for the April of the calendar year in which the session commences; however due to the steep inflationary increase in April 2022 (11.1%) Imperial College have undertaken to use the average RPI increase from the previous 12 months (May 2021 to April 2022) of 6.5% for Academic Year 2022/23. Fees for subsequent years of study may be higher than the fee listed here. Home fees are rounded to the nearest £50.00 and capped at the New Entrant Fee Rate.

The fees for continuing Overseas students usually increase annually by the RPI value for the April of the calendar year in which the session commences; however due to the steep inflationary increase in April 2022 (11.1%) Imperial College have undertaken to use the average RPI increase from the previous 12 months (May 2021 to April 2022) of 6.5% for Academic Year 2022/23. Fees for subsequent years of study may be higher than the fee listed here. Overseas fees are rounded to the nearest £500.00 and capped at the New Entrant Fee Rate.

PhD/MPhil Research Degrees

Introduction.

The Department of Computing at Imperial College is a leading department of computer science among the UK universities and offers an exciting research environment for prospective postgraduate students. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises, including the most recent one held in 2001, and was rated as "Excellent" in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.

Two research degree programmes are offered, one leading to the MPhil degree and the other to the PhD degree. All students are initially registered for MPhil but may transfer to the PhD programme if their progress is satisfactory. The programmes may be followed in either full-time or part-time modes, for which the minimum periods of registration are two or three calendar years, respectively. The time taken for a full-time student to complete the PhD programme is normally expected to be three years from the date of initial registration.

Financial Support

The funding details are different for UK, European and Overseas students.

UK students, students eligible for EPSRC funding

Each year the Department has a number of EPSRC-DTA studentships which are awarded to suitably qualified research students. These pay for the fees and bursary.

Fees: £3,010 per year Bursary: £13,200 per year

European Students

The current situation is that the Department has some scholarships to fund the fees for suitably qualified European students (this typically includes citizens from countries that joined the EU on 1 May 2004). The student or supervisor has to find the funding for the bursary. It is not likely that this situation will change in the foreseeable future.

Fees: £3,010 per year Bursary: £13,200 per year (for EU students that fulfill "residency" requirements)

Overseas Students

There are national scholarships for overseas students, called ORS awards, which cover the difference between the overseas fees (£10,850) and the home fees (£3,010). These awards are prestigious and competitive. The student or supervisor has to find the funds for the remainder of the fees and the bursary. To ensure eligibility for these awards, please apply as early as possible, e.g. in early November for the competition of the subsequent year. ORS poster and the ORS booklet for further details.  We no longer can accept ORS and LEE applications for 2005. --> Please refer to the 2005 Guidelines for the ORS Awards Scheme.

Scholarships

Please see Scholarships and Awards for other funding opportunities, in particular the Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards. Through its Industrial Liaison Unit, the Department is able to offer enhanced PhD scholarships to selected students. These are supported through generous donations from industrial sponsors. They are allocated early in the first year of study and are tenable for up to 3 years and renewed on an annual basis. The criteria for award and financial value differ between scholarships and are publicised at the start of the selection process.

This years Deutsche Bank PhD scholarship has been awarded to Henry Styles, who graduated with a First from our department and is now studying for a PhD under Wayne Luk's supervision.

This year's Microsoft scholarship will be shared between Tyrone Grandison, supervisor Morris Sloman, and Ioannis Xanthakos, supervisor Fariba Sadri.

Please note that the Department does not provide funding for either tuition fees or maintenance. There are sometimes Scholarships available through the Department, College, or individual supervisors. ORS poster and the ORS booklet , and information on the Lee Scholarship . --> Opportunities for Fellowships, Teaching Assistantship (TA) and Research Assistantship (RA) posts are not that frequent and you would need to refer to www.doc.ic.ac.uk/about/situationsvacant/ on a regular basis to see what (if anything) is available.

How to Apply

The Department welcomes new applications from all suitably qualified candidates. Applicants are required to have a good Honours MSc degree or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or some IT-related discipline. Candidates who have a BSc degree only will not be considered. Additionally, applicants need to demonstrate strong research potential. Where appropriate, we may encourage applicants to register first for the MSc in Advanced Computing and then, upon successful completion of this, to apply for registration for a research degree. The MSc course includes special research-oriented provisions for students intending to take this route.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees apply for every year of study. How much you pay will depend on whether you're a Home/EU or Overseas/Islands (non-EU) student. This is known as your 'fee status'.

The College assesses your fee status after it has received your application. The criteria we use to assess this is based on UK Government legislation.

Below you can find out further information depending on the level of study you are commencing or already on.

From Consulting to Marketing: My Journey at Imperial College London

  • The facilities at Imperial College are impressive. The library is also open 24*7! ,
  • Motivate students to excel both academically and personally ,
  • Lots of events taking place all the time. You also get a chance to meet new people almost every day. ,
  • Diverse classrooms and engaging sessions.
  • Curriculum is more theoretical and it could be more practical with hands-on experiences rather than just focusing on writing reports. ,
  • This course is quite hectic which is stressful.

I chose Imperial College for its fantastic teaching and research reputation. Apparently, it has just been crowned the 2nd best university in the world. In addition to that the university has very modern facilities, an overall diverse academic environment and good industry connections. This decision was reinforced when I contacted several ex-students and they all responded favorably. The UK made sense as I wanted to be in an English-speaking country too. From the relevance of subjects to my career aspirations (I was moving from consulting into marketing, and excited about the prospect of being taught by who were arguably the best in their field) It has had its moments but for the most part it has been great.

My London Experience

  • Faculty, Course layout, Infrastructure, Career support
  • Food options available on Campus

I chose this college as I was particularly looking for a course in the International Management program, and this college was an ideal choice for me as their curriculum involves both theoretical and practical training. Also, Imperial College is a highly renowned college and is known for its academic excellence in various fields. My course had students from different parts of the world; therefore, it was an enriching experience getting to interact with them and to be able to learn about different cultural perspectives.

Approx 38,000 GBP

Why I Chose Imperial College London

  • Teaching quality is really good. Professors have great knowledge in their subjects. ,
  • College is very diverse and you would be able to meet students from different parts of the world. ,
  • Location of this university is amazing from where you can access everything easily. ,
  • Excellent Infrastructure. Includes all facilities.
  • Cost of living is too high. ,
  • Workload is extreme sometimes. ,
  • As I am introvert, so it isn't easy to socialize with other students.

I chose Imperial College London because it was my dream university, and the MSc Science Media Production course was exactly what I had been aiming for since my first year of undergrad. Even though I was accepted to other universities like UCL, University of Edinburgh, Manchester, and Sheffield, Imperial stood out because of its prestigious ranking as the 2nd best university in the world and its strong reputation with recruiters and companies. The program is unique and aligns perfectly with my career goals. Overall, my experience here has been fantastic—combining world-class teaching, a vibrant and diverse student body, and a prime location in central London makes it an ideal place for my studies and future aspirations.

Imperial College - Everything you hoped for

  • 1 year course QS World Ranking 6 QS Course Ranking 8 Opportunity to delve into a career not that prominent in India ,
  • The best thing about my university is the course itself. It is more than what I expected and has really helped me learn ,many new things. There are also a lot of eating joints, bars inside the university to chill and relax if you are having a tough day.
  • It has a very small campus compared to my undergraduate and no accommodation by the university for post-graduates. While the university provides a lot of support for career development, placements could really help students.

I have had a great experience overall. I found a great research project I wanted to work on along with a variety of courses that helped me upskill myself and grow in many domains of my field. The only drawback is since it is a 1 year course everything happens really quickly and you need to be prepared all the time.

Remarkable experience Abroad (Imperial College London)

  • I chose this because of the course structure and this course aligns with my interest and goals. I loved the experience and working culture at Imperial College London. I wanted to pursue a broad and research course and this was the major factor for me to choose this course and university amongs many others. ,
  • The most awesome experience was my research projects and library facility. The environment just made me work at my best potential and successfully complete the projects. No one spoon feeds there. Motivation is required to work and stay focused. My university provided me the required motivation and taught me some research skills that I can utilise anywhere in the world now.
  • One important thing that I would want Imperial to offer to Master students is that 24*7 permit in labs, because I sometimes wanted to work late at nights. However, it requires presence of a senior lab member which is always not possible.

My overall experience was really good and I have learnt a lot of new things in a new country. I would say this was once in a life-time opportunity for me. Just the accomplishment of able to complete a master's degree from such a reputed university (ranked 6th in the world) is a dream for me while also gaining lot of research skills and experience.

Since I chose to take a research course, tuition fee was quite high. It includes the usage of some high-technology systems in the lab and other advanced equipment. Total tuition fee was around £37,000 for the batch 2022-23.

Unlock your Full Potential with Imperial College London

  • Imperial is top 6 in the world for university ranking and the group I joined is a highly reputed group in the world for my research area. ,
  • Professional attitude of professors, staff and fellow students of Imperial are excellent. Everyone is respected and included in the imperial community. ,
  • There are plenty of clubs and societies in Imperial, students can join any of them according to their choice, If they don't find one of their choice -Imperial provides all support to start a new club/society.
  • Imperial College London is in the heart of the London. Living and accommodation costs are vey high here. ,
  • This is something that is not in the hands of university team but there is separate student financial team here that supports students in need of any financial assistance. ,
  • Also, London cannot be described better without mentioning about its road traffic.

So far my experience at Imperial was very pleasant. The Professor was very welcoming and guided me to resources to find a good accommodation. I meet with the Professor every week to update the status of the research at the direction it has to take in the future. It was overwhelming with a lot of new changes for me as this was my first international trip from India.

Tuition fees may change every year for 2022 it was 27500£/year for international students.

Imperial College London: Finance and Accounting

Great reputation, alumni network, employee relations, quality of education, quality of peers, etc

Imperial College London: Affordable Education

Located in central London with work and research opportunities with other departments and universities. Ability to do a joint honours program for application based science

The best decision of my life Becoming a professional

This was a natural extension of my role at Standard Chartered bank in the wealth space. I was from a marketing background working in finance and therefore needed a formal ground to progress in the field of wealth and finance. This degree was essential for my next step.

One year - GBP 34,500. Gets revised every year.

As an overseas student, life at Imperial is hectic. You have to constantly adapt to the surroundings. But help is given to anyone who needs it. I was afraid at first, but the cohort, administration and faculty are really nice and welcoming to everyone. A few weeks and some acquaintances should help you fit right in.

Imperial College London is ranked 8th globally. It is one of the most prestigious colleges and has high end research facilities. The MRes Cancer Biology is the most popular course and very competitive in terms of a research degree. I took up this course cause they offered 2 research projects and they have PhD studentships that are offered from the MRC (fully funded on home level with stipend).
