World Clean-up Day

  • X (formerly Twitter)

SASKIA MORTAROTTI, REPORTER: This is where 12-year-old Joseph spends a lot of his free time walking through the mangroves and beaches of Bali, picking up rubbish.

JOSEPH: In the rainy season there's a lot of rubbish in the ocean when you go swimming or surfing and also on the beach, on the sand, on the shore. I try to pick up on streets and rivers more often.

SASKIA: And what Joseph picks up, he repurposes into all sorts of stuff and sells it to raise money which he puts towards his peer's school fees.

JOSEPH: I made Joseph's Recycling so we can turn something negative into something positive.

SASKIA: This Friday Joseph is hoping that he will be joined by millions of people of all ages, all around the world, who will be cleaning up their local areas for World Cleanup Day.

JOSEPH: It would be really nice if everybody could get involved. It was really good to see that people actually really care about the environment.

SASKIA: World Cleanup Day actually started in Estonia back in 2008, when 50,000 people went out to pick up rubbish in their local environment. But it soon grew as more and more countries got involved. Last year, 19 million participants across the globe helped to clean up 219 thousand tonnes of waste and this year for the first time, the UN has added World Cleanup Day to its calendar of significant days. If this all sounds familiar to you, it's because we have been doing it here in Australia since the 90s when Clean Up Australia Day became a thing. It was started by a sailor named Ian Kiernan, who wanted people to clean up the Sydney Harbour.

PIP KIERNAN, CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA CHAIR: Dad was really a trailblazer in setting up this sort of activity 35 years ago, and it has had an impact around the world. Just that simple idea that each of us can make a difference.

Pip Kiernan is now the chair of Cleanup Australia Day which is partnering with World Cleanup Day. She says the simple act of picking up rubbish can have a big impact on whole societies' attitudes towards waste.

PIP: And once you've seen the rubbish, when you're cleaning up, you can't unsee it. And that's really powerful, because it makes you stop and think about what you're buying the packaging and waste that each of us generate, and the ways that we can reduce that, and it really does remind us of the power of positive community action.

And that's really important because waste is a huge problem for the whole world.

PIP: We have to remember that pollution, and particularly plastic litter, doesn't know boundaries. All the oceans connect. So the point of entry might be another country, but it's all one ecosystem.

SASKIA: A piece of plastic like this can take up to 500 years to break down, and even then, it never fully goes away, it becomes a microplastic. Every year in Australia around 130,000 tonnes of plastic ends up in marine environments, and in many places overseas its much worse than that. In fact, of 2,000 garbage trucks worth of plastic ends up in the world's oceans, rivers, and lakes every year, where it can kill wildlife and even end up in the human food chain. That's why experts say governments and businesses need to work together to create less waste and manage it properly. But ordinary people can make a difference too. Just ask Joseph.

JOSEPH: So there's three things. First, if you can pick up all your plastics, pick it up and throw it in the bin. The second thing, try to use a water bottle. The third thing, try to not buy plastic wrap stuff. Buy products that the plastic can be recycled.

On Friday 20th, people around the world will be getting outside and picking up rubbish for World Clean-Up Day. It’s an event that’s just been added to the UN’s calendar of days in an effort to remove waste from the environment and change people’s attitude to litter. We find out more about the day and the effect that rubbish can have on the environment.

World Cleanup Day 2019: Join the biggest peaceful civic action in history!

essay on world cleanup day

On Saturday, 21 Saturday 2019, millions of volunteers will be cleaning up rivers, streets, beeches, forests and other places around the world.  The organization behind the creation of the movement, Let's Do It Foundation , was awarded the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2018. In our " ESD Prize Blog ", the Foundation's Head of Global Partnerships Merili Vares tells us more about the event and the final preparations:

"On September 15th we celebrate exactly one year from the first World Cleanup Day . The epic day that was full of excitement and joy but also hard work and tears. Many of us from the organising team recall it as “once-in-a-lifetime” experience. Helping almost 18 million people to join cleanups, get equipped and stay safe when they are working voluntarily is not an easy job. But most certainly worth the effort. Watch the video to remind the event from last year.

We are ecstatic that this year the action will repeat on September 21st . The day will enrol again as the sun moves from East to West like a green wave, engaging people in a 5 hour cleaning party . This year’s World Cleanup Day is taking a more focused approach on learning from the findings of the day.

As part of the BreakFreeFromPlastic network, Let’s Do It Foundation is inviting participants to contribute to a global Brand Audit. The first step in applying the Keep It Clean Plan principles in any community is to map out the "as is" situation and then set an action plan accordingly. Collecting information on what kind of waste (and whose) can be found polluting the environment is crucial to make future plans for improving the situation. In addition to naming brands, brand audits focus on analysing material’s recyclability both locally and globally. Brand audits do not need pre-organised cleanup actions, it can easily be carried out at school or in the office. To read more, visit https://www.breakfreefromplastic.org/brandaudittoolkit

Our impact lies with our numbers and acting as one community. Let’s Do It Foundation is inviting everyone to choose their own way to contribute to World Cleanup Day, September 21: Organise a cleanup yourself, join a local team at www.worldcleanupday.org or conduct a brand audit. Join the movement!"

World Cleanup Day: Don’t trash your future; clean up your mess now

E CARTOON SEP 20, 2024.jpg

“The strongest governments on earth cannot clean up pollution by themselves. They must rely on each ordinary person, like you and me, on our choices, and on our will.”

Chinese investigative journalist Chai Jing stressed this in her documentary film, “Under The Dome.”

Like pollution, trash can only be effectively cleaned up through a concerted effort — from every individual, and extending to the community and the government.

So, today’s observance of World Cleanup Day is an opportune time for everyone to reflect on how to deal with our trash. Either we cleanup our mess or we trash our future.

The observance of World Cleanup Day every Sept. 20 was institutionalized by the United Nations General Assembly through a resolution unanimously adopted on Dec. 8, 2023 to raise awareness of the environmental challenges the world is currently facing. The initiative started in Estonia in 2008. Since then, it has become a global movement that unites millions of people across the world against the mounting waste crisis.

This year, as we come together to clean our surroundings, it’s crucial to remember that the journey to a cleaner planet begins at home, extends to our neighborhoods, and encompasses our entire community, but its impact resonates globally.

The foundation of a clean environment starts with personal responsibility. Simple actions such as reducing waste, recycling, and participating in local cleanup activities can make a significant difference.

On World Cleanup Day, individuals can join organized events or take the initiative to clean their local areas. Beyond this day, adopting sustainable habits like using reusable products, composting organic waste, and minimizing single-use plastics can contribute to long-term environmental health. Every small action counts, and when many individuals contribute, the collective impact can be tremendous. It’s inspiring to see how personal responsibility can drive broader change.

Communities are at the heart of the cleanup movement. Local organizations, schools, and community groups can organize regular cleanup drives, educational workshops, and recycling programs. By fostering a sense of community pride and responsibility, neighborhoods can become cleaner and more sustainable. Engaging children and young people in these activities is particularly important, as it instills environmental values that will last a lifetime.

As part of the community, businesses and corporations have a significant impact on the environment and thus bear a substantial responsibility. Companies can reduce their environmental footprint by adopting sustainable practices such as minimizing packaging, using renewable energy, and ensuring proper waste disposal. Moreover, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives can focus on long-term environmental projects.

Governments play a pivotal role in creating policies and infrastructure that support environmental sustainability. This includes implementing strict waste management regulations, providing adequate recycling facilities, and promoting public awareness campaigns. Government agencies can collaborate with local communities to organize large-scale cleanup events and provide resources such as gloves, bags, and transportation for collected waste. Additionally, governments can incentivize businesses and individuals to adopt eco-friendly practices through tax benefits and grants.

The success of cleanup initiatives hinges on the collaboration among individuals, communities, and the governments. By working together, we can create a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations. This concerted effort extends beyond World Cleanup Day; it requires ongoing commitment and effort from all sectors of society.

As we celebrate World Cleanup Day, let us remember that every piece of trash picked up, every policy implemented, and every sustainable habit adopted brings us one step closer to a cleaner world. Together, we can make this world a cleaner place to live in.

An unexpected error occurred. Please try again.

International Coastal Cleanup Day: Protecting Manatees and Their Habitat

ICC Self Reporting Cleanup (580 X 380 Px) 2

By Stephanie Cohen, Public Relations Specialist

This year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day once again brought together volunteers from around the world to clean up beaches, rivers, and other waterways. Organized by the Ocean Conservancy, this global event played a critical role in combating marine pollution, which poses significant threats to manatees and other aquatic wildlife.

essay on world cleanup day

Manatees, often called “sea cows,” depend on clean, healthy habitats for survival. However, human activities have increased pollution in Florida’s waterways, with plastics, fishing gear, and other debris frequently entering manatee habitats. These gentle creatures face dangers such as entanglement in discarded fishing lines and ingesting harmful plastics, leading to injury or even death.

essay on world cleanup day

By participating in International Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers made a crucial difference in protecting manatees from these threats. The collective effort to remove trash from shorelines and rivers helped reduce debris in the areas where manatees live, protecting not only the manatees but also the seagrass beds and ecosystems they rely on for food and shelter.

We at Save the Manatee Club were proud to encourage participation in this year’s cleanup through our Manatee Coastal Cleanup Challenge. Through the removal of trash and increased awareness about the dangers of pollution, volunteers contributed to creating safer environments for manatees and other marine species.

essay on world cleanup day

Each piece of trash collected represented one less danger in our waterways. This year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day was another powerful step toward protecting Florida’s manatees and ensuring the health of their habitats for future generations.

Essay on world environment day

As we observe World Environment Day on 5th June each year, it is a reminder of the deteriorating environment and the urgent need to take effective measures. As inhabitants of the planet Earth, it is our responsibility to use resources wisely and take measures to reduce waste. In addition, it is our duty to plant trees and shift to non-renewable resources to reduce pollution and avoid natural calamities. Moreover, the day also reminds us to foster environmental consciousness and create a sustainable world for all. Thus, to put these thoughts into words, we have provided 3 samples for an essay on World Environment Day for your reference.

Essay on World Environment Day: 100 words

Let us look at a 100-word essay on World Environment Day:

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June each year. It is a global initiative to create awareness about environmental degradation. Also, it aims to encourage actions to reduce ecological destruction around us. This day reminds us of our responsibility to protect our planet and work towards a sustainable environment. We can help in achieving this goal by planting trees, reducing waste, and conserving water. Also, learning about renewable and non-renewable resources, pollution, population, and sustainable use of resources will help us preserve the environment.
Therefore, on World Environment Day let us unite in the commitment to create a sustainable future and appreciate the beauty of nature that surrounds us.

Essay on World Environment Day: 200 words

Further, we have a 200-word essay on World Environment Day for you:

World Environment Day is observed on 5th June annually. It was first celebrated in 1973 after the establishment of this day at the Stockholm Conference in 1972. This day is dedicated to environmental preservation and a sustainable future. On this day, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) raises awareness about , , deforestation, pollution, ozone layer depletion and other environmental issue. In addition, this global organization encourages organizations, communities, and individuals to work toward environmental preservation.
As students, we can participate in this global initiative by learning about biodiversity, pollution and its types, and climate change. To help us acquire this essential knowledge we have Environmental Science (EVS) in our curriculum. In addition, schools also organize tree-planting drives, clean-up campaigns, seminars, plays, lectures, and eco-friendly projects for students. After gaining the knowledge, we can help create a greener and cleaner world. Also, we can share our knowledge with our parents and friends and request them to use eco-friendly products.
Therefore, World Environment Day acts as a catalyst for a collective effort to address environmental issues. With this effort, this day acts as a platform to ensure the preservation of air, water, and soil for future generations.

Also Read: Scope and Importance of Environmental Science in School

Essay on World Environment Day: 300 words

Finally, let us view a 300-word essay on World Environment Day:

World Environment Day was instituted in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to mark the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. UNGA allocated 5th June to be celebrated as a day to generate awareness about environmental and ecological issues and inspire global action. The establishment of World Environment Day was a response to the surging need to address global environmental issues like global warming, ozone layer depletion, melting of glaciers, etc.

The first World Environment Day was observed on 5th June 1973. In this year, the theme was “Only One Earth”. Keeping up with this practice, each year a specific theme is attached to this day. The themes revolve around global attention to pressing environmental issues. In addition, the themes encourage national and international organizations, corporations, NGOs, and individuals to take meaningful action.

Thus, to observe World Environment Day we must organize and participate in plantation drives, awareness-raising programs, seminars, and clean-up campaigns. Also, we can pledge to use eco-friendly products. In addition, we can promote the use of green products by preparing skits and plays. In addition, we can minimize our carbon footprint and make sustainable use of resources by reading our Environmental Science (EVS) books. Besides, we can get EVS books from our libraries and learn techniques to work towards sustainability.

Therefore, acquiring knowledge through books and informative websites will help us challenge climate change, global warming, deforestation, extinction, pollution, etc. We can impart this knowledge to the people around us and ask them to rally for new and innovative ideas to reduce ecological problems. This network of an aware community will help us become global citizens.
Therefore, we can save our planet Earth by engaging in knowledge sharing on World Environment Day. Let us all come together to transform knowledge into action to create a sustainable future.

World Cleanup Day’s aim is to engage 5% of each country’s population in its actions as that is the scientifically proven tipping point for initiating lasting social change. In Kyrgyzstan, with over half a million people participating, 8% of the country’s total population was engaged. In 2021, this threshold was also exceeded in Latvia (6.3%) and nearly reached in Maldives (3.7%), Estonia, and Ethiopia (both 3%). Countries participating in World Cleanup Day focused on individual and socially distanced group cleanups, collecting cigarette butts, doing digital cleanups, and running sorting-recycling-composting workshops.

“This mobilization of millions of people from 191 countries and territories is crucial as it enables to engage and transform human habits, as well as to catalyze cooperation to work for sustainable solutions. World Cleanup Day has continued to inspire and empower individuals and communities, and sparked many collaborative projects across national borders to address the growing global waste issue,” said Heidi Solba , the President and Head of the Network of Let’s Do It World.

“The vision of the waste-free world is becoming more and more real,” ventured Anneli Ohvril , the CEO of Let’s Do It World.  “This year’s edition is a confirmation that people all around the world care deeply about the faith of our planet. We are seeing more countries, companies, and organizations taking an active role in environmental actions. It's a sign that societies are environmentally awakened and ready for systemic change, ” explained Ohvril.

Among the millions mobilized, many world leaders also added their contribution. For instance, Queen Sophia of Spain went litter picking in Alicante to participate in World Cleanup Day for the fourth time. Sportsmen, among whom Lucie Ignace, the multi-champion of karate, and musicians, such as Jack Johnson, also urged people to head out and clean their communities' natural areas on World Cleanup Day. Long-lasting partnerships with several multinational organizations, such as  Earth Day Network, JCI, and campaigns like #EUBeachCleanup have also mobilized volunteers for the single-day global cleanup wave.

Issues facing the world

Involving the youth, how to clean the earth, recommendation, works cited.

The world is continually advancing in technology and other areas of life such as businesses, and e-commerce, among others. However, this does not reflect on its steps towards being eco-friendly.

Instead, the world is becoming polluted at an alarming rate, which in turn contributes to various health problems. In addition, the world is suffering from the effects of global warming, which is increasingly causing unpredictable weather. This has contributed to various devastating calamities such as global warming, famine, among others, on the world population.

This raises the need to save our world by trying to solve these challenges. Various organizations around the world have credited global warming with a series of devastating calamities throughout the world. For instance, The Pentagon believes that pollution and its effects in global warming, famine, among other calamities are the destabilizing force in the world as people seek for limited resources.

This is mainly because a polluted world leads to climatic changes, which are closely linked to economic stability as well as security of energy. This paper will try to explore ways of cleaning the earth to make it a better place for the present and future generations (Cleanuptheworld.org. 1).

The world is faced with several issues that need immediate attention. These range from global warming, famine, earthquakes, inadequate drinking water, drought, overcrowding, and increased spread of diseases, among others. Most of these issues have been attributed to our way of living. In fact, some of these issues can be avoided if we could take care of our world.

In essence cleaning our world is an instrumental step towards saving it from harsh calamities such as tornadoes and spread of diseases. To do this, every party needs to be involved. This includes the society, to ensure that their aspirations of a green earth are met. Cleaning the world is a collective responsibility that should encompass every group of people.

This should include the youth, organizations, government institutions, universities, schools, corporate businesses, private sectors, among others. When this is done effectively, pollution of our environment would be greatly reduced, in the process helping in reducing transmission of waterborne diseases, natural calamities, and conflicts, among others.

For, this reason, it is important that cleaning of our world be done regularly to help save it for future generations. Moreover, for this to succeed, youths should be involved. This is mainly because they will suffer from the symptoms of emerging calamities named above. Furthermore, their children will also be affected, and they have the energy to make these changes (VanderMey 58).

Youths are usually instrumental in almost every activity of the society. This is mainly because they posses the energy and numbers required to perform this cause. Educating the youth on how to ensure cleanliness of their environs is critical to survival of future generations. The bible states clearly that cleanliness is next to godliness. This phrase has had a great impact in our society as people try to explore its significance.

In essence, even as we move forward in technologies, social development as well as in our steps with Christ. It is our responsibility to care for the environment. The youth, especially, have a mandate to ensure our world is clean. In this regard, it is important not only to clean the earth during the earth-cleaning day, but also to be aware of our environment and keep it safe.

Another reason why we need to save our environment and clean our world is to protect the lives of endangered species. The changing climates are posing great danger to animals and plants as famine and drought ravage them respectively (Cleanuptheworld.org. 1).

For all the advances that have been made, the worlds still suffers greatly from pollution and careless disposal of wastes that now threaten our very survival. Some of these problems are avoidable, if care can be taken to ensure safe disposal of wastes as well as regular cleaning of our environment.

This will mitigate spread of diseases, effects of global warming, drought and instead improve lives of inhabitants of the earth. There are many ways through which, individuals and organizations can clean up the world. These include buying recyclable products, preparing vegetarian meals fewer times a week.

Others include wise disposal of wastes, cleaning our compounds, among others. This paper will focus mainly on those that affect our youths and that require changes. These include, cleaning our compounds, disposing both recyclable and unrecyclable wastes wisely and safely.

Buying recycled products to help clean our world. Ensuring that we completely use up our clothes before buying new ones and other related materials. In addition, youths need to participate in eco-friendly projects such as tree planting programs, sensitization of the society on importance of conserving our environment as well as cleaning it (VanderMey 58).

These programs are very important in helping to cleanup the world. Moreover, youths should take a significant step to educate the world on health risks and calamities associated with a dirty world.

They should also ensure that they take the initiative to clean streets and other environs during earth clean up day, which usually takes place every third weekend of September. In addition, they should also be proactive to initiating other projects aimed at cleaning the world wherever they are regularly.

This is a call to all the youths in the world, because the repercussions of our mistakes will affect all living things on earth. Every group of individuals has a responsibility of saving our world from pollution. In fact, every organization as well as businesses should adopt eco-friendly methods of production, and waste disposal.

For instance, use of recyclable papers to print in offices and other departments should be adopted to save our trees. In all these, the youth, who form the majority of populations in the world, need to be actively involved in cleaning our world. If this is achieved, then most of the world’s goals will be achieved (VanderMey 58).

Most people keep blaming our governments for global warming due to release of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. However, even though this is true and should be condemned, our people also need to save their environs from destruction. Cleaning the world is for everyone and should therefore a collective responsibility.

As much as this may be difficult, everyone should do something to clean the world. This starts from simple disposal of wastes to e-commerce, paperless banking, buying of recycled products and reducing carbon emissions, among others. Polluted environment poses hazardous risks to life on earth.

In fact, some calamities have been attributed to a polluted world. These include global warming, drought, famine, economic instability, conflicts among other problems. Countries should therefore ensure that such problems are mitigated on, to promote a better world for the present and future generations (Cleanuptheworld.org. 1).

The modern world is currently faced with various environmental issues that need immediate attention. These range from global warming, famine, earthquakes, inadequate drinking water, drought, and overcrowding, increased spread of diseases, among others. Most of these issues have been attributed to our way of living.

In fact, some of these issues can be avoided if we could take care of our world. This cannot be achieved fully, if everyone looks on governments to reduce fuel emissions. In fact, as much as the governments work towards reducing environmental pollution, steps should be taken by the society to clean their environment.

As has been stated above, this should be done through, among others, actively involving the youth in cleaning our world, buying of recycled and recyclable products such as printing papers, and computers. Other methods include using electronic mails, to save our trees, paperless banking, participating in regular tree planting programs, among others (Parashar 1).

More Youths should be actively involved in cleaning the world since they form the majority of the earth’s population and are strong agents of change. Institutions should also adopt paperless banking as well as e-messages and learning to save our trees. In addition, more people should participate in world earth day to clean the world. It should also be noted that even without waiting for earth cleaning day, people should ensure that their environs are clean (Mika Community Development 1).
