Postgraduate Programme and Module Handbook 2022-2023 (archived)

Welcome to the Postgraduate Handbook. The Postgraduate Handbook includes the programme frameworks for all of Durham University's postgraduate degree programmes with taught components, so that you can check: which modules are compulsory on your programme; whether you have any optional choices; and if you do have optional choices, how many you have and the extent of the choice open to you. To view the framework for your degree programme, use the Programme Lists facility below.

Programme regulations should be read in conjunction with the Core Regulations for Postgraduate Programmes .

The Postgraduate Module Handbook also contains descriptions of all the postgraduate modules offered by the University, including the content of each module and how it will be taught and assessed. For guidance on using the handbook, including a glossary and FAQs, please see our Programme & Module Handbook pages in sharepoint.

Please note: this is an archived handbook for a previous year. For the current year use the links at the top of the page.

  • Entry Requirements

Table of Contents

To study Law at Durham, the entry requirements you need to meet are very competitive.

Applying for such a prestigious university can and will be very daunting so ensuring you have done everything you can to prepare is essential.

We will go through what entry requirements Durham is looking for to help boost your chances of being accepted.

About Durham Law School

Durham Law School is a world leader in legal education and research. Their award-winning academic staff produce ground-breaking research with impact.

QS World Rankings currently has Durham Law School ranked in the top 50 Law Schools in the world, and the university was ranked 3rd best for research in the UK’s last national Research Excellence Framework.

  • Your Guide To The Best UK Law Schools in 2024

The highly flexible three-year LLB course, provides a solid grounding in the main areas of English and Welsh Law.

Additionally, it allows for individual specialisation through a variety of optional modules.

Students also have the opportunity to spend a year abroad in their third year of study if they so wish. At present, Durham Law School has partnerships with universities in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Singapore.

The university also has further institutional links with universities in the USA, China and New Zealand. Graduates of degrees such as this are highly sought after by employers and would be particularly suited to working in an international context.

  • Oxbridge vs Non-Oxbridge Law Schools

The degree course provides the opportunity to obtain a Qualifying Law Degree as recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board.

Many of Durham’s graduates currently hold jobs such as being members of the UK Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, Members of Parliament, other Government positions, and as leading figures in Law.

Such notable alumni include: Lady Jill Black the second woman to become a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Earl Pompery formerly a member of the US House of Representatives and even television presenter Gabby Logan.

Durham University Law Entry Requirements

The Durham Law entry requirement for those taking A-Levels is A*AA . There are no subject-specific requirements but General Studies and Critical Thinking are excluded for entry.

With this in mind, the most popular A-Levels taken by students who study Law at Durham are History, English Literature and Mathematics.

  • What A-Levels Do I Need To Study Law?

Anyone who is taking a Science A-Level that includes a practical component will be expected to take and pass this as a condition of entry.

BTEC Level 3

Those applying to Durham Law School with BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma/OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma are required to achieve D*DD.

Anyone with BTEC Level 3 qualifications may be required to hold specific A-Levels to meet the admissions requirements.

Durham University Law Entry Requirements: LNAT

Durham Law School requires applicants to sit the National Aptitude Test for Law (LNAT) to assist in the admissions process.

Your performance in the LNAT is one of a number of grounds on which admissions selectors determine the relative merit and potential of applicants. The university uses this to distinguish between otherwise similar candidates.

  • LNAT Basics: The Complete Guide

It is important to note the following:

  • Both parts of the LNAT examination – the multiple-choice score and the essay – are always considered by admissions selectors when assessing an application.
  • No minimum score is required for the multiple-choice part of the LNAT.

In Durham’s assessment of the LNAT essay, Admissions Tutors look for evidence of the following positive attributes:

  • Focus on the particular question
  • Clarity of expression and fluency of prose
  • A logical progression and structure
  • Reference(s) to relevant evidence
  • An ability to recognise, and address, counter-arguments

Things to Consider: Copyright & Publishing Your Thesis

Open access and your thesis.

  • Considering Publication?
  • Publishers and OA theses
  • Embargoing access

Durham University  "is committed to sharing the findings of its world-class research as widely as possible to enhance its use and impact within the academic and research community and more widely within society."  This aims to reduce the barriers, where appropriate, to allowing researchers, including prospective doctoral students, to read and build upon your research.

Durham University Open Access Policy

PhD students are required to deposit a PDF of their thesis in  Durham e-Theses , the University's open access e-theses repository. Durham e-Theses contains:

  • the full-text of Durham University Higher Degree theses passed after 1 October 2009
  • an extensive collection of PhD, MPhil and Research Masters dissertations from 1899 onwards.

Theses in Durham e-Theses are available alongside other UK theses through the  British Library's eThos service , the open access aggregator service  Core.ac.uk  and other services.

Things to consider

  • These will have been theses and dissertations made open access by their authors through various sources such as those listed on our  finding theses pages .
  • Your thesis is also expected to meet the requirements of  Durham University's Open Access Policy
  • You may also be required to meet the expectations and requirements of any organisation which has funded your doctoral research (e.g. the UK Research Councils ) which expect your thesis to be freely accessible.
  • your own career intentions (e.g. publishing your thesis)
  • any legal or ethical implications for the content included in your thesis (e.g. copyright, data protection, patent applications).
  • This might include temporarily  restricting access to your thesis , or providing access to a redacted version of your thesis through our repository where commercial IP or ethical considerations may warrant this.

Copyright and your thesis

Durham University's Open Access Policy  requires that all Durham theses (with a few exceptions in extreme cases) will be required to be made open access; freely available to all with an internet connection.

Whilst authors of doctoral and masters theses may benefit from some exemptions to copyright for the purpose of examination, it is important that the copy of the thesis made available via Durham e-Theses complies with all copyright requirements - in particular where you have included third party copyright material within your thesis (photographs, maps, site-plans).

When depositing, you can choose from a range of licences (including Creative Commons licences, which offer options clearly indicating what uses can be made of your thesis, and which support researchers who may be commercially funded) and copyright statements to deposit the work under.

Further information can be found at:

  • Durham University Copyright Officer Support pages

Publishing your thesis

Aiming to develop the research presented in your thesis for publication, either in one or more journal articles or as a monograph, is something you may wish to consider as a means to raise the profile of your work, or may be a common "next step" on the academic career path in your discipline.

You should aim to discuss your aspirations and plans with your  supervisor  or  department  in the first instance, but we have provided some additional questions you should think about on this page.

Questions to consider

These are a few questions you should consider if you are thinking of publishing part or all of your thesis.

  • be aware of disciplinary differences and speak with your supervisor and examiners for advice
  • a monograph can take several years to be published, but may be the expected norm for a career in your academic discipline.
  • it may be preferable to have a number of strong peer-reviewed journal articles on your CV however, when applying for jobs.
  • some publishers may support publication of a chapter as an article as a precursor for rewriting for publication as a monograph, where this might raise the profile of the author or the research - but this should be discussed with the publisher as consideration of prior publication may vary.
  • if not (for example, third party copyright images, maps, diagrams) you may not be able to include these in a published format with out seeking permission or a licence to publish from the rights holders.
  • this may impact upon your choice of publication format
  • it is very rare that a publisher well accept a thesis for publication as a monograph without substantial adaptation
  • your thesis was written for examination, essentially to persuade three examiners (who are likely to be experts int he relevant field) of its unique contribution to research and its scholarly credentials
  • a monograph being published by a commercial publisher will need to demonstrate an appeal to a wider audience with different levels of expertise, and offer commercial potential for the publisher in most cases.
  • For further guidance on good practice in research data management, see the  University's Research Data Management pages .
  • Durham University's Open Access policy expects your thesis to meet the requirements of the  University's Open Access Policy .
  • If your doctoral research was funded, the research funder may require you to make your thesis accessible.
  • If your thesis will be accessible prior to any publication date of content from your thesis, you should make sure your publisher is aware of this and check their policies around theses and pre-publication. See the 'Publishers and Open Access Theses' tab for further information.
  • Check any agreement or contract a publisher offers you.
  • Check the credentials and reputation of the publisher (see our  guidance on where to publish your research for further information ).
  • Make sure that publication is in your best interests.
  • Be careful about restricting your own future use of the content.

Examples of Publisher approaches to open access theses

"Elsevier welcomes submissions from authors and will consider these for publication where work has not previously been published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Elsevier does not view the following prior uses of a work as prior publication:

  • Publication in the form of an abstract
  • Publication as an academic thesis
  • Publication as an electronic preprint"

PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Student life in Durham

Durham University is organised into seventeen colleges , each with its own characteristics and traditions. Each student is a member of a college and belongs to its community. This is the bedrock of student life at Durham.

All colleges thus benefit from student volunteers and university staff members engaged to assist students and answer their questions. Each college also allows its students to practice sports, cultural or artistic activities, organises events or offers volunteer experiences.

Student life at Durham is therefore primarily driven by the choice of college.

Throughout the university, there are 80 music clubs whose shows are produced in the Gala theatre on campus or even in the city’s cathedral, located on the banks of the Wear.

At the same time, 27 theatre companies put on more than 90 plays a year at the university, and it is possible to practice around 18 different sports thanks to the infrastructure on campus.

Final Thoughts

How to Apply

Find out how to apply for a research degree at Durham, including information about finding a supervisor, entry requirements, writing a research proposal and the Applicant Portal.

A member of the Careers and Enterprise Centre discusses the available career paths and options with a student

Make contact with a department and find a supervisor

When applying to study for a research degree you should find out if your  academic department  shares your research interests and that there is a supervisor with expertise in your subject area to support you.  All of our departments are happy to discuss their areas of expertise so please do get in touch with them before applying.

  • Academic Departments
  • Research Centres and Institutes

Check entry requirements

Each course has its own entry requirements and you’ll need to check what they are for the course you’re interested in.  As a guide, you’ll usually need at least a 2:1 honours degree or its equivalent.

We welcome applications from overseas students and you can check our country information pages for details on how your qualification compares to the UK system.

You’ll also need to check our English language requirements to make sure your English language is at the level for you to be able to succeed on your course.

  • Find out about International Entry Requirements
  • Find out about English Language Requirements

Further advice on visa requirements, including how to get your Certificate of Acceptance for Studies is available from our  Visa Information  pages.

Write a research proposal

Your research proposal is an integral part of your application.  You should make contact with the department where you are interested in studying to discuss your research proposal with them.  Depending on the department, they may then nominate potential supervisors, who will help you to develop your research proposal before you make an application.

You can find information and advice about how to write your research proposal on our department pages:

  • Academic Departments

Dates and deadlines

You can often start a research degree at different times of the year as well as in the autumn term, with some available in January and April/May.  You should let us know when you apply when you would like to start your studies and leave enough time for the application process to be completed before the start of your course.  If you’re an international student then you’ll also need enough time to apply for a Student visa.

Some applications may specify a deadline by which you must apply, so it’s worth asking the department where you would like to study this to make sure you apply in time.

Apply

Once you have refined your research proposal you’re now ready to make an application through our  Applicant Portal .

You don’t have to submit your application all in one go.  The application is organised into sections so once you’ve started it you can save it and come back to it at any time.  You’ll need to upload certain documents as part of the application process so it’s a good idea to have these ready when you apply.  These include:

  • T ranscripts of your qualifications
  • English language test certificates if taken
  • Personal statement (if not written directly into the portal)
  • Two  satisfactory  references  (unless you wish to supply referee details so we can contact them for you)
  • Scholarship documentation (if appl icable )
  • Research proposal

Don’t worry if you don’t have  all of  your documents with you when you apply as you can always uplo ad them later through the portal.

As an applicant for a research degree, you’ll also need to give us an outline of your field of study  and  the name and department of your potential supervisor .

We communicate with you through your applicant portal through action requests and notifications, so it’s a good idea to log in to your portal regularly so you can check on the progress of your application .
