iPhone troubleshooting: Common iPhone problems and how to fix them

iPhone 11 Pro

It doesn't matter if you're on the latest iPhone running the latest version of iOS or on an older phone with aged software: "It just works" is an ideal. The reality is "it just works until it doesn't — usually when you need it the most." Like any complex and sophisticated machine, iPhone can cause you any number of problems. In most cases, though, iPhone troubleshooting is a straightforward affair. So, before you call Apple Support or visit your local Genius Bar, here are a few things you can try to get your devices and services "just working" again.

How do you restart, reboot, and recover your iPhone?

One of the best iPhone troubleshooting tips is a cliché for a reason. Sometimes merely restarting your iPhone can clear up problems that range from battery drain to bad Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to misbehaving apps. You can simply power down and power up or, if you have to, you can hard reboot.

Sometimes a reboot just isn't enough. If something has gone seriously wrong and you're either told to — or need to — put your iPhone into recovery or device firmware update (DFU) mode to completely re-install iOS, you have that option as well.

And if you don't want to reset everything but just one or a few things, you can do that too! It's a simple task to reset the phone's settings, remove network connections, erase content, zap the keyboard dictionary, rearrange the Home screen, or dump Location and Privacy data.

What if your iPhone won't charge, gets terrible battery life, won't shut down, or won't start up?

Having problems with power is the worst. It means you can't rely on your iPhone working for you when you need it. Whether your iPhone isn't charging, is draining too fast even when charged, or simply won't turn off or refuses to turn back on, the good news is that sometimes it's easy to fix on your own.

How do I fix problems with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other connections?

Connections that won't connect... grr. Bluetooth needs to broadcast and establish a connection; Wi-Fi needs to lock on and transmit data; AirDrop relies on both. It may seem like a miracle any of it ever works, but it should all work, all the time. That's the job. So, if your connection isn't connecting, here's what you can try.

What if nothing is working?

In some cases, despite all of our best efforts, you'll encounter problems you can't fix on your own. In those cases, you should escalate straight to Apple: You can call the company at 1-800-MY-APPLE, tweet them @apple_support, visit them online at apple.com/support , or go straight to your local Apple Retail Store.

The familiar refrain of the IT pro has become something of a joke, but the fact remains that turning devices off and on again really does fix problems sometimes. It is the first thing you should try for a wide range of iPhone issues. Here’s how:

  • For the iPhone X, XS, 11, 12, or 13 range, press and hold the power button and one of the volume buttons until the power slider appears on the screen. If you have an iPhone SE, 8, 7, 6, their S variants, or older, you only need to press and hold the power button.
  • You should see a slider that says Slide to power off . Drag it from left to right and give your iPhone 30 seconds or so to turn itself off.
  • To turn it back on, simply press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

App Store app updates menu on iPhone

Many iPhone problems are caused by out-of-date software, so it’s worth checking to ensure you have the latest iOS version and that your apps are up to date. If you find that a particular iPhone app keeps crashing or freezing, an update will often resolve your issue. Here’s how:

17 Best Early Labor Day Deals

  • Go to Settings , General , Software Update , and see if there’s an update available.
  • It’s usually best to allow your iPhone to update automatically by going to Settings , General , Software Update , Automatic Updates , and toggling on Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates .
  • To make sure your apps are up to date, open the App Store, tap your profile icon at the top, and tap Update All .
  • It’s usually best to allow your iPhone to update apps automatically too. You can do this by going to Settings , App Store , and toggling on App Updates .

Sometimes your iPhone doesn’t respond, or the touchscreen freezes up, making it impossible to turn off the regular way. If this happens to you, it’s time to try what Apple calls a force restart . Here’s how to do it on most modern iPhones, from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 13:

  • Start by pressing and quickly releasing the volume up button
  • Now, press and quickly release the volume down button.
  • Finally, press and hold the power button.
  • When you see the Apple logo on the screen, you can let go of the power button.

If you have an iPhone 7, press and hold both the power button and the volume down button until you see the Apple logo. If you have an iPhone 6s, first-generation iPhone SE, or an older iPhone, press and hold the power button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears.

If you’ve had your iPhone plugged in or on the charger for a while (at least an hour) and it doesn’t seem to be charging, and you’ve tried a force restart (see above), here’s what to try next:

  • Start by looking at the charging port to make sure there’s nothing stuck in there and no visible signs of damage. Be very careful when cleaning your phone . If you want to dislodge dirt in the charging port, use a wooden toothpick, cotton swab, and steady hand.
  • The problem could be the charger or the cable. If there are visible splits or kinks in the cable or the charger has bent prongs, it’s time to recycle them and buy new ones. Try plugging your iPhone in with a different cable and charger, and use an outlet you know is working. Just make sure you use the right kind of charger .
  • If the charging port on your iPhone is damaged or your wall charger isn’t working, you can always try using a wireless charger . Every iPhone since the iPhone 8 supports wireless charging.
  • If none of these solutions work, then you'll need to head to an Apple Store and find out about your options for repair. You may be entitled to a free battery replacement. You can learn more in our guide on how to get a battery replacement for your smartphone .

WiFi Settings Menu on iPhone

It can be very frustrating when your iPhone refuses to connect to a Wi-Fi network, but it’s usually easy to fix. Here’s what to try:

  • Check that your router is on and working. See if other devices in your home are still connected. If your Wi-Fi is completely out, then try unplugging your router and then plugging it back in, and make sure all the cables are connected properly.
  • Go to Settings , Wi-Fi on your iPhone to ensure that it’s toggled on.
  • Tap on your Wi-Fi network name to see if there are any issues, and make sure that Auto-Join is toggled on.
  • If it still won’t connect, then go to Settings , Wi-Fi , and tap on your network name, then tap Forget This Network .
  • Try turning your iPhone and your router off and on again, then go back to Settings , Wi-Fi, and tap to connect to your network, entering your password when prompted. Bear in mind your router will take a few minutes to start back up.
  • As a last resort, go to Settings , General , Reset , Reset Network Settings . This will reset all of your Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings.

Bluetooth pairing settings menu on iPhone

Whether you are trying to connect a Bluetooth speaker, an in-car system, or another device, problems with iPhones connecting to Bluetooth are very common. Here’s how to fix them:

  • Start by making sure that your iPhone and Bluetooth accessory are fully charged, powered on, and close to each other.
  • Read up on your Bluetooth device or system, make sure you know how the pairing process works, and make your device discoverable (sometimes you have to hold down a button).
  • Go to Settings, Bluetooth on your iPhone, make sure it’s toggled on, look for the device you want to connect to in the list, and tap on it.
  • You may have to enter a PIN or passcode.
  • Some Bluetooth accessories use an app on your iPhone. If that’s the case, go to Settings , Privacy , Bluetooth, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on for the app.
  • If a previously connected device doesn’t seem to be working, then try unpairing it. Go to Settings, Bluetooth on your iPhone and tap the info button next to the device in question, tap Forget This Device , then try pairing again.
  • If you still can’t connect to your iPhone, try connecting to another phone or tablet to ensure the issue isn’t with your accessory or Bluetooth system. Sometimes there’s a limit to how many connections you can have, so refer to your Bluetooth device’s manufacturer to find out if this is the case and how you can delete old connections. We have a separate guide for troubleshooting Bluetooth headphone problems .
  • Try connecting a different Bluetooth device to your iPhone to see if that works.
  • If the problem seems to be with your iPhone, and nothing so far has worked, it’s time to contact Apple support .

We all know the fear as you inspect your iPhone screen for cracks after a tumble. Broken or cracked screens are very common. Although your iPhone may still work, it’s a good idea to get the screen fixed as soon as you can to prevent injury or further damage. These are your options:

  • Contact Apple and book an appointment to take your iPhone into an Apple Authorized Service Provider or the Genius Bar. You may have the option of scheduling an onsite repair where someone comes to your home or office. You can also mail your iPhone to a service center for repair, but that means being without your phone for a while. Apple’s official repairs are also very expensive. (It costs $279 for an out-of-warranty iPhone 13, for example.)
  • Find a reliable third-party repair shop, like New York City’s iPhone doctor . Just make sure you do your homework and read reviews first. And, if possible, have them repair it in front of you.
  • If you’re feeling handy, you could always try repairing it yourself. You can find detailed instructions and repair kits at iFixit and elsewhere. After a lot of pressure, Apple is finally making it easier to repair your iPhone , but most people probably shouldn’t attempt it—it’s easy to make a bad situation worse.
  • You might be tempted to just trade in or sell your iPhone , but we highly recommend fixing it first. While some services will buy broken iPhones, the amount of money they knock off the payment for a broken screen far exceeds the cost of a repair.
  • Whatever fix you go for, consider getting an iPhone case, screen protector, or both , so it doesn’t happen again.

If you find that your iPhone’s battery doesn’t last as long as it used to, you can check its health by going to Settings , Battery , Battery Health . This will show you what percentage of your battery’s initial charge capacity is left.

It’s easy to get a battery replacement, and it may even be free if your iPhone is still under warranty or you have AppleCare+, but you will need to visit an Apple Store or send your iPhone to a repair center. You can find more details in our guide on how to get a battery replacement for your smartphone .

Whether you spilled coffee all over it or your iPhone took a dive into the toilet bowl, there’s a good chance it will survive, provided you take the right action. Every iPhone since the iPhone 7 has some kind of water resistance . If yours gets wet, turn it off immediately and remove as much liquid as you can with a clean towel. Then read our guide on how to rescue a wet phone .

One of the reasons that Apple is so popular, and you paid a premium for that iPhone in the first place, is that the company offers a high standard of customer support. You should take advantage of that and contact Apple for help if you can’t find a fix on your own. Here’s how to go about it:

  • Before you contact Apple, it can be helpful to write a detailed description of your problem and document everything you have already tried to fix it.
  • It’s worth downloading the official Apple Support app . It offers lots of useful advice and troubleshooting tips and can connect you with a person when you need to speak to someone.
  • The Apple Support website can guide you through some possible fixes and help you find the right number to call when you need to.
  • If you want to go into an Apple Store or visit an authorized repair center, try this Apple website to locate one near you.

These fixes will cover many common iPhone problems. Even if you don’t think some of our suggestions relate to your issue, give them a try. You might be surprised. In the unfortunate event that your iPhone is still not behaving, here’s some advice on finding a fix yourself:

  • Start by typing your problem into Google (or your preferred search engine) and be as specific as possible. Include your iPhone model and a description of the problem.
  • Support forums are often the best places to find solutions. Look for a thread where someone has posted your exact problem and found a fix that worked. Try the Apple Support Forum , iPhone subreddits on Reddit , and forums on Apple-focused sites like iMore . You can also try creating a post of your own to ask for ideas on fixes.

The last resort for persistent problems is to factory-reset your iPhone , but this will wipe everything that’s on there. Please back up your iPhone before you consider this.

  • Once you have backed up, go to Settings , General , Reset , Erase All Content and Settings . Confirm and then set your iPhone aside for a few minutes for the process to complete.
  • If you restore your backup during the setup process and find that you still have issues, then try factory-resetting again, but this time, after it has been wiped and restarted, choose Set Up as New iPhone . If the issue is gone, it could be that an app or setting in your backup is causing the problem.

Despite being one of the top names in the smartphone market, even iPhones can run into problems. Since each issue has its own fix, finding the right solution can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Today we'll take a look at some iPhone troubleshooting tips to fix all kinds of problems.

One of the most common problems you might experience with your iPhone is that its battery doesn't last because it has degraded. When this happens, you'll end up charging your iPhone more often because the battery can't hold a sufficient charge to last a day. You may also experience unexpected shutdowns and reduced performance.

To check your iPhone battery, launch Settings and head to Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If your battery health has dropped below 80%, consider a battery replacement . If you see anything other than "Peak Performance Capability" then your iPhone has reduced performance to accommodate a failing battery.

While it's normal for iPhone battery health to decline over time, rapid degradation could be due to using a non-MFi-certified charger or cable. Using non-certified charging accessories may damage the battery due to heat build-up and may also take longer to charge your iPhone. To prevent this, you should always stick to MFi-certified chargers .

Another issue you might encounter is your iPhone completely failing to charge. This is often caused by dirt in the charging port. To check, shine a flashlight into the port. If you see any dirt or debris, carefully remove it with a wooden toothpick . Don't forget to wipe your charging cable down too.

If an app isn't working properly or responding on your iPhone, you can force quit it and then relaunch it to fix the issue. To do this on iPhone X or later, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle for a moment to open the app switcher. Then, find the app that's not responding and then swipe it up to close it.

To force quit an app on iPhone SE, iPhone 8, or earlier models, open the app switcher by double-pressing the Home button. Then, swipe to the unresponsive app and swipe it up to close it. After that, relaunch the app, and you should no longer face the issue.

You can solve a huge number of iPhone problems by simply restarting your iPhone . When you opt for restart, your iPhone shuts down all the running apps and background processes. This allows it to free up system resources, clear temporary files, and eliminate any bugs and glitches that might be causing the issue.

To restart your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap "General."

General option in the iPhone settings app.

Tap on the "Shut Down" option.

Shut Down option in the iPhone Settings app.

Move the slider to the right to turn off your iPhone.

Shut down slider on an iPhone.

After that, wait a few seconds, and then long-press the power button to turn on your iPhone. Upon restart, you should no longer face the problem you had before. You can also press and hold the side button and volume up button, or ask Siri to restart your iPhone.

If your iPhone isn't responding at all, and you can't even use its touch screen or buttons, you'll need to force restart your iPhone .

If an app is acting up, won't open, some features are broken, or it frequently crashes, consider updating it. Developers often fix problems with new versions of the app, so grabbing the latest build might just solve your issue.

Let's say you're having trouble with LinkedIn on your iPhone. Then, to update it, open the App Store and search for "LinkedIn."

Searching for LinkedIn on the iPhone App Store.

If an update is available, an "Update" button will appear next to the LinkedIn logo. Tap it to start the update process.

Update buton to update LinkedIn through App Store.

Similarly, you can download updates for any other app installed on your iPhone. You can do this by launching the App Store, tapping on your profile picture, then hitting the "Update All" button.

Sometimes updating apps isn't enough, you also need to update the operating system too . You can update iOS under Settings > General > Software Update.

Updating your iPhone to the latest version of iOS will not only ensure that any ongoing issue with your iPhone is resolved but will also add new features and the latest security patches. Your iPhone will restart once the update is complete.

If your device isn't connecting to the internet, you're not receiving calls, or you're experiencing other network issues, resetting your network settings might help. Be aware that resetting network settings will wipe out all saved Wi-Fi passwords so make sure that have the password for your primary Wi-Fi network so you can easily reconnect after the reset.

To reset your network settings, open the Settings app and tap "General." Then, select "Transfer Or Reset iPhone."

Transfer or Reset iPhone option in the iPhone Settings app.

Tap "Reset."

Choose "Reset Network Settings."

Enter your device passcode and tap "Reset Network Settings" again.

The Apple logo will appear with a progress bar. Once the reset is complete, your device will automatically restart. Hopefully, your network issues will be resolved!

Your iPhone has a helpful "Reset All Settings" option that can be useful in various situations. This option restores all your customized settings to their default values, including network settings, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards.

This option is useful if you're having problems with your iPhone, such as unexpected behavior, sluggish performance, or connection problems. To use the "Reset All Settings" option, open the Settings app on your iPhone and navigate to General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Reset All Settings option in the iPhone Settings app.

Type your device passcode and then tap "Reset All Settings" again.

Reset All Settings confirmation in the iPhone Settings app.

You'll see the Apple logo and the progress bar indicating the process has begun. Once it's complete, your iPhone will restart automatically.

If you're still facing issues, it might be worth creating a backup of your iPhone and then erasing everything. You can create an iCloud backup under Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now or by connecting to a Mac or Windows PC running iTunes.

You should only erase your iPhone if you're confident you have a backup that you can easily restore. Be warned that all of your data will be deleted if you proceed.

To erase data from your iPhone, open the Settings app and navigate to General > Transfer Or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.

Erase All Content and Settings option in the Settings app.

Tap "Continue."

Continue option on the Erase This iPhone screen.

Enter your device passcode. Then, tap the "Erase iPhone" option.

Erase iPhone option in the Settings App.

After that, the iPhone will start erasing all the data of your iPhone. Once the process is complete, restart your iPhone. Upon restart, you'll be given choices on how to restore the backup on your iPhone to access all personal data.

Most problems you encounter with your iPhone can be fixed with a few simple tricks. However, if none of the solutions work or your iPhone has become completely unresponsive, you may need to reinstall the firmware using DFU mode.

Device Firmware Update (DFU) is an advanced recovery mode that can fix problems directly with your iPhone's firmware. While in DFU mode, your iPhone will be powered on, but the operating system won't load. Remember that using DFU mode will erase all your data, so we strongly recommend creating a backup of your iPhone before proceeding.

The specific steps for entering DFU mode and reinstalling the firmware vary depending on your iPhone model. However, the general process involves connecting your iPhone to your Mac or Windows computer. Then, you'll need to perform a specific sequence of button presses to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Once Finder or iTunes recognizes your device, you can follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the firmware.

Is your iPhone issue still happening even after you erased everything and restored the backup? It may be worth erasing everything again and setting up your device as new . If the problem disappears, this will confirm that the issue was something in the backup state.

In that case, you'll need to restore to an older backup. iCloud may allow you to restore a previous version, so you could use one of those (not the most recent) to fix the issue. If you make frequent local backups on your Mac or Windows machine then you might want to try one of those too. You'll lose any data added to your iPhone after that backup was created.

Unfortunately, there's no way around it. You'll have to sacrifice some data to get your iPhone back in working order.

Hopefully these fixes can resolve any issues you have with your iPhone. If you're still having trouble, we recommend taking your iPhone to Apple or an authorized service center for further help.

7 Ways I Avoid Doomscrolling on Social Media

Why i regret buying an android tablet instead of an ipad, these speakers are the best upgrade i've made to my desktop audio setup.

Apple's iPhones might be beautifully crafted pieces of tech that many people regard as the pinnacle of smartphone design, but even they can run into problems.

Here are our top troubleshooting tips for all iPhone iterations. We'll start by looking at some general troubleshooting tips, then focus on model-specific issues.

1. Restart Your iPhone

The number one cure for any tech ailment—iOS or Android, Windows or Mac, TV or printer—is to turn the device off and back on. Indeed, there are very few situations where a simple reboot shouldn't be your first port of call.

The trick works because it resets the software into a stable state after an unexpected sequence of events caused something to break.

The process varies depending on which model of iPhone you have, but we've covered how to restart any iPhone, even if the buttons are broken .

2. Update iOS

settings iphone menu

if a simple reboot didn't fix your issue, you need to ensure your iPhone is up to date . If you're running an outdated version of iOS, certain apps and features might not be compatible (not to mention the security vulnerabilities this exposes you to).

To update iOS, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update . We've also got some solutions if you can't update your iPhone .

3. Update Your Apps

appstore-homepage

If you're having issues with a particular app, it's worth ensuring you're running its latest version. That's because developers are constantly releasing bug fixes with each new update, so the issue you're facing may have been fixed.

You can update apps manually via the App Store. In the App Store app, tap your profile photo at the top. Then, scroll down and tap Update All or the specific app you want to update.

4. Force-Close an iPhone App

Sometimes an app's instance will become unresponsive, causing it to freeze.

Force-Close an App on iPhone X or Later

To force-close an app on an iPhone X, swipe up from the bottom of the screen but leave your finger on the screen halfway up. The phone will launch the app switcher. Swipe up on an app card to close it.

Force-Close an App on iPhone SE, iPhone 8, or Earlier

To force-close an app on an iPhone 8 or older, double-press the home button to bring up the app switcher. Swipe left and right to find the app you want to close, then swipe up.

5. Reset Your iPhone's Network Settings

iPhone reset page in Settings

Most connectivity issues can be solved by resetting your network settings. It's easy to do. Head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings .

Remember that although you won't lose your valuable data, you will lose any saved Wi-Fi passwords by performing this reset.

6. Reset All Settings on Your iPhone

If you think an erroneous setting (rather than software or hardware) is the root of your problems, you can reset all phone settings without losing your data. Of course, you'll need to put everything back the way it was afterward.

Head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings to begin the process.

7. Factory Reset Your iPhone

iphone settings factory reset

If you need a nuclear option, you could factory reset your iPhone . It will return your device to its original state. Although this won't cure hardware issues, it should solve most software and OS-related problems.

To reset your iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings .

Make sure you back up all your iPhone data before you perform a factory reset. You will irrecoverably lose any data you have not backed up.

8. Check Your iPhone's Battery Usage

iphone battery settings

iPhones generally have excellent battery life, even for power users. But if your device's battery drains unusually quickly, you can try to identify the offending app.

To see which apps use the most juice, go to Settings > Battery. You can check the charts at the bottom to look at the battery usage of various apps over a certain time frame.

9. Review Your iPhone's Battery Health

Batteries can only tolerate a certain number of charge cycles before severely deteriorating. Fortunately, Apple allows you to keep an eye on your iPhone's battery health with ease.

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and Charging to take a look. And if it's lower than 80%, it's time to get a battery replacement.

10. Fix Bluetooth Issues

Bluetooth can act surprisingly finicky for a technology that's so widely used. If you're having problems creating a Bluetooth connection between your iPhone and another device, there are a couple of fixes you can try.

Firstly, remove old devices that you no longer use. It can help avoid conflicts. To unpair a device, go to Settings > Bluetooth > Info > Forget This Device .

Secondly, turn Bluetooth off and on again (sound familiar?). Swipe up from the bottom of the screen on an iPhone 8 or earlier (swipe down from the upper-right for iPhone X and later) to access the Control Center , and tap the Bluetooth icon to toggle it.

11. Fix HomeKit Issues

Some smart home devices are HomeKit-enabled, thus letting you control them from your iPhone using Siri.

If your HomeKit devices are not working as expected, ensure you're logged into the same iCloud account on both your iPhone and the devices themselves. If nothing else works, you can reset your HomeKit connections by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > HomeKit > Reset HomeKit Configuration .

12. Check for Dirt

Cleaning an iPhone Charging Port with SIM Key

If you have problems charging your iPhone or using its physical buttons, you should always check for dirt, dust, and other muck that might have built up under the buttons and the Lightning port.

The best way to dislodge the dirt at home is to use a can of compressed air. We have a detailed guide on cleaning your iPhone that should help.

13. Revoke Background Permissions

If your iPhone overheats , you can't use features such as the camera flash. In extreme cases, you might not be able to use your phone at all until it cools down.

Obviously, if you accidentally left your phone in the sun, it's easy to identify the culprit. Car vent clips can also cause overheating . However, if it overheats regularly during normal usage, an intensive background app could be at fault.

To prevent apps from running in the background, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and slide the toggles on a per-app basis as required.

14. Remove the SIM Card

If you've suddenly lost the network signal unexpectedly, a dislodged SIM card could be your issue.

Thankfully, it's easy to remove and reinsert the SIM. You just need a pin or paperclip to open the tray (because nobody keeps Apple's SIM-eject tool, right?).

15. Go to an Apple Store

If you can't fix the issue yourself, it's probably time to book an Apple Store appointment at a Genius Bar . If your device is under warranty or you have Apple Care, the store will fix your iPhone for free, even if it involves sending it away for repair.

iPhone 14 & 13 Troubleshooting Tips

The iPhone 13 and 14 have one common issue related to 5G connectivity. There are also some activation issues, among others, seen on the iPhone 13 . Resetting the Network Settings has been shown to work in these cases.

Some users have also reported Face ID issues on the iPhone 14 Pro. Usually, all you need to do is clean your Face ID sensor or hold your iPhone correctly to get Face ID to unlock it.

iPhone 12 Troubleshooting Tips

Like the iPhone 14, the iPhone 12 also has some Face ID issues. However, one of the most common issues seen is a non-working SIM card.

If you're facing issues on the iPhone 12, consider reading our guide on the biggest iPhone 12 issues and how to fix them .

iPhone 11 Troubleshooting Tips

More than anything, iPhone 11 users seem to have issues related to the battery. Either the battery drains too fast, or it has lost capacity too quickly.

This can be a bothersome issue, as replacing an iPhone's battery can be pricey. With warranties usually expired for this model, users are left to fix it themselves.

Before worrying too much, check out the battery health on your iPhone and see what capacity it's at. It might also be worth taking preventive measures to protect your iPhone's battery health .

iPhone X Troubleshooting Tips

Two problems unique to the iPhone X are accidental automatic emergency calls and green lines on the display.

You can disable the automatic emergency calls by going to Settings > Emergency SOS > Auto Call . But if your iPhone suffers from the green line issue, you must contact Apple Support .

iPhone 8 Troubleshooting Tips

The forced restart method changed on the iPhone 8. If you own one, you'll need to press and release Volume Up , press and release Volume Down , then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Another issue that afflicted a lot of iPhone 8 devices was a swelling battery. If you have this problem, you'll need to contact Apple for a replacement.

iPhone 7 Troubleshooting Tips

The most common iPhone 7 complaint is poor call quality. Apple has acknowledged the problem and offered a list of fixes. Here are the company's suggestions:

  • Ensure your iPhone is not in Silent mode.
  • Check if your phone's case is blocking the speaker.
  • Restart your iPhone.
  • Clean any dirt, dust, or debris out of the speaker.
  • Make sure your speaker volume is set to the maximum.

It's fair to say they're not particularly helpful suggestions, but that's Apple for you. Anecdotally, some users said Verizon was to blame, so you could try changing carriers if you're desperate.

iPhone 6 Troubleshooting Tips

A few people still use an iPhone 6. It's the phone that was infamously "bendy." So, if you have one, be careful not to place it under physical stress.

That aside, the iPhone 6 was probably the worst iPhone model from a design standpoint:

  • It was found to pull people's hair out because of a tiny space between the screen and chassis (solution: don't hold it too close to your ear).
  • Users suffered Error 53 messages if they replaced the Home button using a third party; it locked them out of their device.
  • The Plus model's optical image stabilization system was defective.
  • The touchscreen was prone to failure.

Almost all these issues were only resolved by taking your phone to an Apple Store.

Troubleshoot All Your iPhone Issues

We've gone over fixes for the most common iPhone issues and even included tips for specific models. So, no matter which iPhone you have, there's something for you. Hopefully, one of these helps you fix your issue; you'll likely need to contact an Apple Support agent if not because they'll be able to assist you in more ways than we could.

Ultimate Guide to Troubleshooting the Most Common iPhone Problems

Ultimate Guide to Troubleshooting the Most Common iPhone Problems

Simply put: sometimes your iPhone doesn’t work the way you expect it, or doesn’t work at all. Often there are simple little fixes you can do. Less often it will be a serious problem that will require professional fixing. If your iPhone isn’t working, here’s a roundup of the most basic steps you can take.

Restart a problem app

apple iphone problem solving

Apps can get confused and not behave the way that they should. For example, on my iPad the Weather Channel app will sometimes fail to update, still showing the temperature and forecast from the last time I used it several hours earlier. The simple fix is to quit the app and start it again. Double tap the Home button to bring up the carousel of running apps, then slide up on the problem app to quit it. Then tap the app icon to restart it. If you have ongoing problems with an app, try checking our guide for what to do when your iPhone keeps freezing . You can also chat live with Apple support for any issues you encounter.

iPhone Life

Restart your iPhone

As with a desktop computer, sometime your iPhone can stop working correctly. And as with a desktop computer, the first thing you should try is restarting your iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until you get a message asking if you want to power off. Slide the button to confirm you want to do so. It will take a minute to power down. When it’s done, press and hold briefly the Sleep/Wake button as you ordinarily would to power on your iPhone.

“Force restart” your iPhone

The very first iPhone I had froze a few days after I got it. It didn’t respond to any touch or press. But having been a Mac user for years, I intuited it was simply a matter of forcing it to restart. If your iPhone freezes and doesn’t respond, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until your iPhone shuts off then restarts. (Of course, the obvious first thing to do when your iPhone doesn’t respond is to make sure your battery is charged by plugging it in for a half hour and then trying again.)

Connect to iTunes if your iPhone gets stuck during startup

If you’ve restarted your iPhone and it gets stuck during the process, with the Apple logo being on the screen for a long time, you’ll need to connect it to a desktop computer that has the free iTunes software installed and booted up. Once it’s connected, then do a force restart as described above. However, don’t release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons when you see the Apple logo. Instead wait until you see the Recovery Mode screen. Then choose the Update option, and iTunes will attempt to reinstall iOS, but without erasing your data. If it takes more than 15 minutes, you may need to try a second time to force restart while connected to iTunes.

Download the latest version of iOS

apple iphone problem solving

Another important basic step if your iPhone is misbehaving is to download the latest version of iOS. Sometimes the behavior you’re seeing is a known issue, and Apple will have released a fix. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update has been issued, you’ll see an indication that it’s available.

Reset All Settings

apple iphone problem solving

If your iPhone is slow and/or seems to have various issues, another option is to Reset All Settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This clears all the settings, thereby getting rid of anything that might be problematic — but it retains your data.

Reset and restore from a backup

apple iphone problem solving

In a worst-case scenario, if nothing else is working and your iPhone isn’t useable, you may need to reset your iPhone to its factory settings and then restore from a backup ( here's how to back up your iPhone ). First determine whether you have a current backup by going to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and then tapping a device listed under Backups to see the date of your latest backup. Hopefully it will be fairly current. Then go to Settings > General > Reset and tap “Erase all content and settings.” Then proceed to “Choose backup,” and select from the list of available backups in iCloud.

Toggle Airplane Mode on when getting a connection failure

apple iphone problem solving

Sometimes your iPhone will fail to connect to your cellular data service or to a Wi-Fi router. Often the fix simply entails turning on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds to disconnect from wireless services and then turning it off. This will cause your iPhone to forget the previous connection and make a fresh one. To turn on Airplane Mode, slide up the Control Panel from the bottom of the home screen and tap the airplane icon. You can also try removing and then reinserting your iPhone’s SIM card.

Try “Forget This Network” for Wi-Fi issues

apple iphone problem solving

If you’re having Wi-Fi issues and toggling Airplane Mode doesn’t work, then go to Settings > Wi-Fi and select the particular network. Then tap Forget This Network. Then try reconnecting to it and signing in again.

Try “Renew Lease” for Wi-Fi issues

apple iphone problem solving

My desktop computer typically fails to connect to the internet at least a couple times a day, but I can immediately get it working again by renewing the IP number assigned to it. You can also renew the lease on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the “i” to the right of the network name you’re connected to. Then tap Renew Lease.

Reset network settings

apple iphone problem solving

Another option if you’re having connection problems is to try resetting the network settings. This resets your Wi-Fi networks and passwords and your cellular settings (as well as VPN and APN settings). Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Check battery usage if you're having excessive battery drain

apple iphone problem solving

If your battery drains faster than is typical, there are a couple things to try. A simple first step is to restart your iPhone, which can often fix the problem. The next step would be to go to Settings > Battery to see the details of which apps are using your battery. It not only shows the apps you’ve been actively using, but also how much energy is being drained by apps using your battery in the background. If an app is taking a lot of energy in the background, you might want to turn off "background app refresh" by going to General > Background App Refresh and turning off this feature, or by turning it off for specific apps. In extreme cases you might want to try resetting all settings, or even doing a reset and restore. Read next: what to do if you have a  glitching iphone screen .

Common iPhone 11 problems and how to fix them

The iPhone 11 is joining the ranks of older phones, now two generations behind the current iPhone 13 . Nonetheless, the iPhone 11 is and will remain a terrific, modern smartphone with plenty of life for years to come. That’s why owners of Apple’s 2019  iPhone 11 ,  iPhone 11 Pro , and iPhone 11 Pro Max  are committed to solving any lingering problems related to their phone.

Problem: Face ID

Problem: data connection, problem: wi-fi connection, problem: wireless charging, problem: activation, problem: volume, audio, and sound, problem: overheating, problem: bluetooth connection, problem: poor battery life, problem: storage space.

Fortunately, the initial functional problems with iPhone 11 were common to most other Apple smartphones that year: They were linked mostly to Apple’s problematic iOS 13 . With the much smoother release of iOS 14  and similar ease of use with the current iOS 15 , many of the pressing issues faded away for most owners. Some lingering problems may persist, and here is what you can do about them.

If you’re having problems with the iPhone 11’s Face ID unlock feature, here’s what to do.

Possible solutions:

Make sure your iPhone 11 is running the latest version of iOS 14 or iOS 15. That should quickly clear everything up. If it does not, then do the following.

Tap Settings > Face ID & Passcode . Then, make sure that Face ID is set up on your phone and that all of the features you’re trying to use Face ID with are enabled. If you’re having issues using your face to unlock your phone, make sure you’re looking directly at the screen and that the room is light enough so that the camera can detect your face. Try bringing the iPhone 11 closer to your face or position it more at face level. Make sure there’s no dirt, dust, or debris blocking the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera.

If you often change your appearance, consider adding an alternate appearance to Face ID. Go to  Settings > Face ID & Passcode >Set Up an Alternate Appearance .

If service is spotty or you’re repeatedly unable to connect to your network, here’s how to handle it.

The first thing to do is restart your phone and turn on Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds before turning it off. If that doesn’t solve the problem, check your service provider for outages at Down Detector or look for reports on local social media.

In iOS 15, you can toggle Cellular Data and/or LTE off and on.

  • Tap Settings .
  • Tap Cellular .
  • Tap Cellular Data Options .
  • Tap Voice & Data > LTE .
  • Switch to 3G and then back to LTE.

You can also toggle Cellular Data off and on. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data . Toggle it off and then back on.

If you are having problems connecting to Wi-Fi, or your connection repeatedly drops or is slow, there are a few things you can do before you lay hands on your phone.

First, make sure your Wi-Fi is working correctly or reset your router to make sure. If you’re connected to your network, unplug the router for a minute, plug it back in, and reconnect. If your home Wi-Fi is OK, then pick up your phone and make sure you have your Wi-Fi password on hand before you get started.

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi . Tap the info circle. Tap Forget This Network and try to reconnect. You’ll need to re-input your password.

Or try resetting your network via Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings .

Issues with dysfunctional wireless charging are fairly widespread. Some customers with Qi wireless chargers report that after they place certain iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max models on the charger, the iPhone may recognize it as a charger, but will not actually charge, and may even become hot to the touch.

If this is still an issue, you can continue to charge your phone with a wired connection. Make sure to update your iPhone’s OS with the stable iOS 15. Mechanical maneuvers include a power-off reset/restart, which did solve the issue for some people.

  • Press and release volume up.
  • Press and release volume down.
  • Hold the power button and wait until the Apple logo appears.

If you use a case that stores credit cards or security passes, remove them before charging your phone or just remove the case altogether before charging.

Activation issues are common when you try to get a new phone up and running for the first time, regardless of the model, and the iPhone 11 is no different.

Apple’s System Status page

  • Make sure your wireless plan is operational.
  • Update your handset to the latest iOS version — which is iOS 15 — and restart.
  • Go to  Settings > General > Software Update . If an update is available, you’ll see a prompt to select OK or Update , or Install Now (with 50% or more battery or plugged in).
  • Remove your SIM card from the tray and then put it back. The tray should close securely. Only use the tray that comes with your current phone.
  • Try a different SIM card. You can get one at your carrier’s retail outlet or ask your carrier to test your phone with a different card. Replace your current SIM card with a new one, if necessary.

If you experience problems with any aspect of audio function, there are various remedies you can try.

  • Take your SIM card out of your phone and then replace it to solve the problem of a poorly positioned card.
  • Turn off Bluetooth to compare audio quality with or without it. If it improves, leave it off for your calls.
  • Make sure your microphone is clean, clear, and unobstructed.
  • Remove your case to investigate whether it’s causing volume obstruction.
  • If the above steps do not improve the audio, clear your phone’s cache memory by restarting it.
  • Do a hard factory reset  via  Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase all content and settings . Be sure to back up your data first.
  • If the mic is still causing problems, restore your phone from a backup.

A common complaint with various iPhone 11 units is that they get uncomfortably hot, especially while using resource-heavy features like GPS. This has owners concerned about the long-term effect on battery life.

  • Remove the case.
  • Keep your handset away from prolonged heat exposure (in a hot car, for example).
  • Games, especially AR games, can cause the device to heat up.
  • Maintain radio silence by putting the phone into Airplane Mode  for a while. In the Control Center, tap the Airplane icon to shut off all GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular signals. Or individually disable Location Services, GPS, or Bluetooth — anything you don’t immediately need.
  • Wait to charge the device, as that can also heat up your phone.
  • Turn the iPhone off and do a hard restart. (Hit the volume up button, then the volume down button, then the power button. It will not ask if you want to power down, it just does it.)

If you’re still experiencing this issue, contact  Apple Support for assistance.

Some iPhone 11 owners noted problems in iOS 13 with connecting peripherals via Bluetooth. Those issues include anything from trouble pairing their phone to the car to maintaining a connection after the device has finally paired, to repeated connection and disconnection.

Before testing any of these suggestions, ensure that your iOS has been updated to the latest version available, such as iOS 15.

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is on. If it’s disabled and you can’t enable it, restart your phone, and then try again to pair and connect.
  • Make sure that your Bluetooth accessory and device are in close proximity.
  • Turn your Bluetooth accessory off and on.
  • Make sure that your Bluetooth accessory is on and fully charged or connected to power. If your accessory uses batteries, replace them with fresh ones. If you’ve been able to connect in the past, unpair the accessory and put it back in discovery mode. Then try again to pair and connect.
  • If you can pair your accessory with devices other than your iPhone, unpair the accessory from the other devices and try again.
  • If none of the above steps work, contact Apple tech support or make an appointment with the Genius Bar.

You can also forget and then reconnect the problematic Bluetooth device.

  • Tap Bluetooth .
  • Select the Bluetooth connection having issues using the info circle.
  • Tap Forget this Device .
  • Try reconnecting.

If you still can’t connect, try resetting your phone’s network settings.

  • Tap General .
  • Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone .
  • Tap Reset .
  • Tap Reset Network Settings or Reset All Settings.

iPhone 11 models have experienced a variety of battery problems over time. The iPhone 11 Pro Max, for example, has been associated with premature battery wear. In 2021, a bug affecting only iPhone 11 models also led to inaccurate battery reports on iOS and related problems.

Always go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health if you fear a battery issue. Here you can check out the current condition of your battery and see if there are any obvious issues. If you are experiencing significant battery loss, it’s a good idea to take/send your iPhone in for professional repair or replacement.

Fixes in iOS should also alleviate the problem. Ideally, you should upgrade to iOS 15. With iOS 14.5, a fix enabled the iOS to recalibrate the battery reporting function via the Battery Health section. It takes time, as the function needs a few weeks to properly measure and recalibrate the battery. If the recalibration finds the battery to be damaged, it will walk you through the steps for a full replacement .

The iPhone 11 can have up to 256GB of storage, but if you save a lot of files and apps to your phone then even this can become limiting. Fortunately, there are built-in ways to deal with low storage space.

In iOS 15, go to Settings > App Store >   Offload Unused Apps to get rid of apps that have been inactive for a while, but keep their documents and data. Then, review each app to spot the ones taking up the most space. If you find an egregious offender, select it and view the options for clearing space. For the Music app, for example, you can choose to auto-delete any songs you previously downloaded for offline listening.

Bored? Swipe all the way over to the App Library on your iPhone and type "":: in the search bar. Congratulations! You've just crashed your iPhone. But don't worry — it's not permanent or serious, according to security researchers.

Mastodon user Konstantin found that typing those four characters into the search bar will crash SpringBoard, the app responsible for the iPhone home screen. All it does is throw the phone into a loop for a moment before returning you to your lock screen. It doesn't close any apps or cause any other issues; if anything, it's just a reset. I tested it on my device and found nothing out of the ordinary.

Apple is expected to hold its next special event on Tuesday, September 10. That means new iPhones and Apple Watches are just a few weeks away.

Rumors have been circulating for months about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series, but specific details about the camera systems have remained unknown. That is, until now. According to details posted by AppleInsider, each of the new handsets will likely have improved camera specs. However, some features are expected to remain the same and match those of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, respectively.

The iPhone isn’t typically where you should turn if you’re looking for the best Apple deals, as the lineup is popular, expensive, and always among the best phones. But there are some iPhone deals out there, and some of them are even found among the best phone deals taking place today. However, if you want ultimate savings on an iPhone shopping refurbished may be the best way to go. Refurbished iPhones offer significantly lower price points than new models, and refurbished iPhone deals are almost always available for even lower prices. We’ve tracked down today’s best refurbished iPhone deals and among them are some impressive iPhone 14 deals and iPhone SE deals. If you’re looking for the latest and greatest don’t miss out on today’s iPhone 15 deals, but if savings on any iPhone dating all the way back to the iPhone XR is of interest, read onward for all of the details. iPhone XR -- from $162

A refurbished model but one that's unlocked and comes with a full one-year warranty, the Apple iPhone XR is still pretty stylish for its age. It has a large 6.1-inch LCD screen with 1,792 x 828 resolution with Liquid Retina technology ensuring it looks super sharp. Powered by the A12 Bionic chip, it's starting to show its age but still has potential. There's also a 12MP back camera that can shoot 4K videos while the front-facing camera is 7MP and ideal for selfie-taking.

Ensure your charging cable and adapter are not damaged and are properly connected. Try using different accessories to rule out hardware issues.

  • Go to Settings > Battery to view battery health and which apps are using the most power. Consider enabling Low Power Mode to extend battery life.

Calibrating the battery can sometimes improve its performance and lifespan.

  • Drain the battery until your iPhone turns off, then charge it to 100% without interruption.

Connectivity Problems

Quickly turning Airplane Mode on and off can reset network connections.

  • Swipe down from the top-right corner (or up from the bottom on models with a Home button) to access Control Center and tap the airplane icon.

If connectivity issues persist, resetting network settings can help.

  • Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will erase all saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings.

Performance and Storage

iPhone Free Space

Lack of storage can affect iPhone performance.

  • Check storage at Settings > General > [Device] Storage. Uninstall unused apps, delete large files, or offload apps to free up space.

Regularly close apps you’re not using to free up memory and improve performance.

As a last resort for unresolved performance issues, consider a factory reset.

  • Back up your iPhone, then go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

Maximizing iPhone Lifespan

To maximize battery lifespan, try to maintain your iPhone’s battery charge between 20% and 80%. Extreme full charge or discharge cycles can shorten battery life over time.

Regularly update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. These updates include important security patches, performance improvements, and new features that can enhance your device’s longevity.

Keep your iPhone clean by gently wiping the exterior with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings and do not use window cleaners, household cleaners, compressed air, or aerosol sprays.

Managing and Backing Up Data

Use iCloud to back up your iPhone automatically. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and ensure that iCloud Backup is turned on. Perform backups regularly to safeguard your data.

For a local backup option, use iTunes (on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier) or Finder (on macOS Catalina and later). Connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes/Finder, and select your iPhone to back up.

Optimizing iPhone Usage

Assistive Access in iOS 17

Personalize your iPhone by customizing settings to your liking. Adjust notifications, control center, sounds, and display settings to enhance your user experience.

iOS offers a range of accessibility features designed to accommodate various needs, including Vision, Mobility, Hearing, and Cognitive. Explore these settings to customize your iPhone usage further.

Maximize your iPhone’s potential by utilizing features within the Apple ecosystem, such as Handoff, AirDrop, iCloud, and Family Sharing. These features enhance connectivity and productivity across your Apple devices.

Iphone troubleshooting: 10 top problems and how to fix them.

December 8, 2021 • Devin Partida

Many people consider the iPhone the pinnacle of smartphones, but even they have their fair share of technical problems. Tech makes life easier in many ways, but navigating through iPhone issues can be frustrating, time-consuming and stressful. This is why we put together a helpful iPhone troubleshooting guide for you.

Why iPhone Troubleshooting Helps

Simply put, iPhones don’t always work the way users expect them to. Some issues arise from physical damage, such as water damage or cracked screens , while others are actual bugs that cause the operating system to go haywire.

Remember that some problems may require a visit to the Genius Bar at an Apple store in order to be fixed. Thankfully, the service at these stores is exceptional, and users typically leave without experiencing the same problems on their iPhones.

However, it’s also very common for iPhone users to get online and look for simple fixes to their most common problems. Below is a list of some common iPhone problems and some solutions that will bring an iPhone back up and running as it should.

Common iPhone Issues With Solutions

The first two things iPhone users should do before fixing a specific problem is to first update the phone’s current operating system to the latest version. This will often fix most problems , but not all. Users can also turn the iPhone off and then back on after a couple of minutes to see if issues resolve on their own.

It’s also suggested that users perform a hard reset. Instead of turning the iPhone off as one normally would, follow the steps for performing a force reset. The initial problem may be fixed by carrying out these steps.

Below are some common iPhone problems and ways to fix them. iPhone troubleshooting may seem daunting to some, but many of these problems are easy to solve by following a few steps.

1. Face ID Recognition

Face ID is a useful feature Apple introduced a few years back. It makes it easy to unlock the iPhone, authenticate downloads and make payments with Apple Pay. Sometimes, Face ID will stop working or have trouble detecting the user’s appearance.

If you’re having trouble with Face ID, you should first check the Face ID settings in your iPhone Settings app. Go to Settings > Face ID and Passcode. Ensure all Face ID options are enabled, such as iPhone Unlock, Wallet and Apple Pay and Password Autofill.

You can also check each of your Applications and ensure that toggle for Face ID is on. Clean your Face ID sensors located to the left and right of your front-facing camera and ensure nothing is obstructing them.

You can set up an alternative appearance if you wear sunglasses or have facial hair, too. If all else fails, you may need to reset your Face ID and set it up again. The iPhone will walk you through it once you click Reset Face ID.

2. Apps Not Loading

If any of your iPhone apps are not loading, try forcing them to close by swiping halfway up your iPhone screen and swiping up on the app. You should also check for app updates on the App store — often, app developers will release updates that patch bugs or other issues within the app that may be causing you problems.

Another solution is to delete the app that is not responding and re-download it from the app store. Additionally, double-check your Apple ID settings to ensure your information is up to date and credit card information is stored. Your last resort should be to contact Apple Support to help you resolve the issue with the problematic app.

3. Connecting to WiFi

It can be hard to identify if WiFi issues are due to your router or your iPhone. It’s wise to periodically check and reset your WiFi, especially if your iPhone has problems connecting.

The simplest solution to WiFi issues is by clicking on the info section of your WiFi network and selecting Forget This Network. It will have you sign back into your WiFi using your password and will try to reconnect.

You can also try resetting your network settings by following these steps: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings. These options will likely solve WiFi connection problems.

4. Battery Life Problems

It’s to be expected that over time, an iPhone battery may not work like it did when you first took it out of the box. Using your iPhone and charging it daily can sometimes cause the battery to drain more quickly than normal.

These issues are common, so there are plenty of great iPhone troubleshooting solutions. Apple even incorporated a Battery Health setting in the Settings App so users can see how their battery is performing.

If you fear you have a battery issue, visit this setting by clicking Settings > Battery > Battery Health. There are a ton of metrics users can look at and even see battery usage by app. If there are significant issues with an iPhone battery, users may need to visit Apple or get it repaired.

5. Overheating

Many people have experienced iPhone overheating issues. Whether it’s the operating system using too much battery or users leaving their iPhone in a hot car, overheating can cause long-term damage to an iPhone if not taken care of immediately. If the iPhone displays a warning about overheating, there are a few steps you can take to ensure it cools down properly.

Temporarily take the iPhone out of the case if there is one. Be sure to move into a cooler environment if the phone was out in the sun or on a beach. It will not work normally until it cools down. This simple iPhone troubleshooting tip can help your phone’s battery life.

Make sure not to charge the device if it’s overheating, as this will make the phone hotter. Once the phone has cooled, it will turn back on and should act normally. You may want to perform a hard reset afterward to be safe and prevent any other problems from occurring.

6. Wireless Charging Issues

For users having trouble charging their iPhone wirelessly, it’s important first to check if your iPhone case is compatible with Qi charging. Some cases may be too thick or made from material that will not work with wireless charging.

A solution that has worked for some iPhone users is to perform a hard reset on the iPhone. Perform a hard reset or consider using a wired connection to charge your iPhone. If these issues do not resolve, try contacting Apple support and let them know you’ve done a hard reset and the problem is persisting.

7. Audio Problems

If you’re experiencing sound quality issues on your iPhone, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue. First, make sure your microphone is clean and free of any obstructions. Some iPhone cases can block the microphone if they’re ill-fitting, so be sure to check if the case fits properly. You can also take out your SIM card — if the card is not in the right position, it can cause problems with sound on the iPhone.

It’s also important to double-check that the Do Not Disturb setting is toggled off. Click on Settings > Sound and Haptics, and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider back and forth. If you don’t hear any noise from the phone, it may need to be serviced by Apple.

8. Storage Space

Some odd years back, many iPhone users struggled with a lack of storage space. Now, most iPhone models come with plenty of storage for the average user. However, if your storage is full, there are a few ways to clear files to make space for apps, downloads and photos.

You’ll want to delete any apps that you don’t use anymore (we all have them). This is a simple, straightforward way to clear your storage. You should also take some time to scroll through your camera roll and email accounts and delete old emails or photos that you no longer need.

These items tend to take up most of your storage space. Clear the Safari cache or whichever internet browser you use on your iPhone. These methods should clear up storage space and make it easier to use your phone.

9. Bluetooth Connection

Whether using Bluetooth to connect to your car or to play your favorite tunes from a speaker, it can be frustrating when the connection cannot be made or Bluetooth does not work properly. One of the best ways to solve Bluetooth problems is to turn Bluetooth off and back on. You can also try pairing your Bluetooth accessory again to see if that resolves your issue.

Additionally, iPhone users should ensure that the Bluetooth accessory is fully charged and working properly before pairing. Some Bluetooth accessories have a Bluetooth setting on the hardware, so be sure to read any instructions for the accessory if your iPhone is not connecting seamlessly.

Also, click Settings > Privacy > Bluetooth to enable any apps that use Bluetooth connections. The last method to fix Bluetooth issues is to follow the tried and tested process of performing a hard reset.

10. iPhone Passcode Issues

Many iPhone users will use a passcode as an alternative to Face ID. When wearing a mask or sunglasses, this makes it easier to gain access to the phone. Sometimes, users will forget their passcode and perform too many failed attempts, disabling the phone for at least a minute. The last thing any user wants is to disable their phone for more than a couple of minutes.

One solution is to put the iPhone in recovery mode. Remember that this will delete all of the settings and data —including the passcode — so that you can access the phone. It’s always suggested to backup your phone to a laptop or computer frequently, so if you need to go through with the Recovery process, you’ll be able to restore the phone with a previous backup.

You can also set it up as a new device if you backed up your data to your iCloud account. Apple explains how to put your phone in recovery mode , and it’s fairly easy to get your iPhone back up and running after completing the recovery process.

Many iPhone users are happy with their phone’s performance and rarely run into issues with software or hardware. However, no piece of technology is perfect and will sometimes cause users problems. Keep in mind that a simple reset, or even a factory reset, will solve many issues that can give iPhone users a headache.

Solve Common iPhone Problems Yourself

While the Genius Bar at an Apple store is a great way to solve all of your iPhone problems, the fixes listed above should certainly be your first step in iPhone troubleshooting. It’s best to try some of them before making an appointment at the Apple store, which may be inconvenient for you.

While problems can be frustrating, they make life easier, whether you FaceTime family or friends every day or need to use it for business purposes. Don’t let phone problems ruin your day — follow some of the iPhone troubleshooting steps above to solve common problems, and always feel free to contact Apple Support if you have exhausted your options.

Iphone12 unable to connect to carrier, how do you trouble shoot for this issue. NONE of the simple fixes work, reset, airplane mode on/off, restart, update software, clean SIM card, etc. Apple said the phone is bad, but did not indicate what part is bad. Now what?

I am currently working getting an iPhone repaired. The problem is the display won’t show anything and there is no visible damage to it at all. I have replaced the battery and when I touch the cover of the display cable it is fairly warm. What could be the issue

If you're a relatively new iPhone X user, you might have realised that there are a few problems and annoyances with Apple's 2017 handset.

Here are a few iPhone X annoyances and problems you might have encountered and how to solve them.

If you're having problems with the touch on your display, then Apple has now revealed a complementary servicing program for these devices: iPhone X Display Module Replacement Program for Touch Issues

Common iPhone X problems and annoyances

How to restart iphone x.

Restarting the iPhone X is a bit different to earlier iPhones because there's no home button.

  • Press and hold the Side button and either volume button until the Slide to power off slider appears
  • Drag the slider to turn off
  • To turn on, press and hold the sleep/wake button until you see the Apple logo

If you have mega problems with iPhone X then force restart it like this:

  • Short press the Volume Up button.
  • Short press the Volume Down button
  • Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen

You can also try and press the sleep/wake button for up to 30 seconds to restart - again until you see the Apple logo appear.

iPhone X cracked screen

According to Apple, the new iPhone X has the most durable glass ever used on a phone, thanks to a strengthening layer that is 50 per cent deeper. However, SquareTrade, a company that provides additional warranties for devices, recently put the phone through its breakability tests and ultimately determined that the glass back and lack of a home button make it "the most breakable iPhone ever."

Pocket-lint can also confirm the iPhone X seems really fragile. Our US news editor had the phone for three days, wrapped in a case, and still managed to somehow crack the front glass without ever dropping it.

Depending on how it’s cracked you might be able to get a free replacement, so get on the phone double quick to your carrier or the store you bought it from. If you’ve just been stupid and dropped it, then you should probably hope you’ve got insurance, or have gone with O2 in the UK. The UK network is offering one free screen replacement with some contracts.

The iPhone X display hifts in colour and hue

Don't panic, you aren't going mad. when looking at the oled screen at certain angles you notice slight shifts in colour and hue. this, says apple, is perfectly normal. , the iphone x display shows "burn-in" or "image persistence", "with extended long-term use, oled displays can also show slight visual changes," explains apple in a support document. "this is also expected behaviour and can include 'image persistence' or 'burn-in' where the display shows a faint remnant of an image even after a new image appears on the screen. you can do a number of things to avoid it happening in the first place:.

  • Making sure your phone is always running the latest version of iOS
  • Use auto-brightness to automatically adjust the brightness of the display. It's on by default can you can check the settings by going to Settings, General, Accessibility, Display Accommodations
  • Set your iPhone X to turn off the display when not using it
  • Avoid displaying static images at maximum brightness for long periods of time

iPhone X screen won't turn on

We've had an issue where the iPhone X screen simply doesn't turn on or dies. The phone is still on - you hear a sound when you take a screenshot for example - but you need to force a restart of the phone as charging doesn't work.

To force a restart, press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Secondly, press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Thirdly, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

iPhone X Face ID won't work if you cover your mouth, nose or eyes

Apple said its new device-unlocking feature, Face ID, would recognise you even if your appearance abruptly changes due to things like beards, hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses.

However it doesn't work when a scarf is wrapped over your mouth. It's wintertime, and we've tested this; it doesn't work. It also needs decent light to work, so it might not work in a dark bedroom, for example.

  • What is Apple Face ID and how does it work?

iPhone X Face ID doesn't work when the iPhone X is in landscape

You're lying in bed and you want to unlock iPhone X. No problem, the iPhone works in the dark, and with your eyes full of sleep, but Face ID doesn't work when the iPhone is held in landscape bizarrely.

To open your Apple smartphone with the swanky new facial recognition software you have to hold the phone out in front of you in portrait.

Many apps aren't optimised for the new iPhone X display

Apps that haven't been optimised for the iPhone X show massive "software bezels" - black borders - at the top and bottom, basically making the phone look like the iPhone 8. Many apps aren't updated yet.

They all run with software bezels, though, in time we suspect they'll update, but if the experience isn't up to what you expected, have a chat with the individual app maker rather than Apple.

10 Common iPhone X Problems & How to Fix Them

iPhone X users are complaining about a variety of bugs and performance problems. This guide will show you how to fix the most common iPhone X problems.

Our walkthrough includes fixes for Wi-FI issues, Bluetooth problems, FaceID problems, abnormal battery drain, and more. Try one of these fixes before scheduling an appointment to an Apple Genius at your local Apple Store.

Table of Contents

How to Fix iPhone X Battery Life Issues

If you start noticing your iPhone X’s battery drain faster than normal, it might be an app or your cellular connection causing the problem.

apple iphone problem solving

We’ve put together a guide that will show you what to do if your iPhone X battery life takes a turn for the worst. Some of these steps will take you a few seconds, others are a little more involved.

In most cases, it’s not a hardware issue. However, if the issues persist, you might want to schedule an appointment at your local store so they can diagnose your issue.

How to Fix iPhone X Wi-Fi Problems

If your iPhone X suddenly can’t connect to your Wi-Fi network or if you’re noticing slower speeds than normal, here are a few solutions to try.

The first thing you’ll want to do is check your router and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for an outage. Check DownDetector for ISP reports in your area. You can also check in with your provider’s customer service reps. If there isn’t an outage, check your router.

Unplug your router for a solid 60 seconds and plug it back in. This could restore your connection and improve your download/upload speeds.

If you can’t access the router you’re using or if you’re positive it has nothing to do with hardware, head into your iPhone X’s settings.

First, toggle Wi-Fi off and on again to see if that jumpstarts the connection. If that doesn’t work, you’ll want to force your iPhone X to  forget the Wi-Fi network giving you issues. Go into your Settings, go to Wi-Fi, select your connection by tapping the “i” in the circle, and then tap Forget this Network at the top of the screen.

Make sure you have the Wi-Fi password handy because this will cause your iPhone X to forget it.

If that doesn’t work, go into your Settings app, tap General, tap Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Reset, and then tap Reset Network Settings.

How to Avoid iPhone X Screen Burn-in

Shortly after the iPhone X’s release, Apple noted that  the device’s OLED display can cause “image persistence” and/or “burn-in” over time. What this means is that you might see a static image (app icons, for example) burned into the screen if the phone’s display is left on for long periods of time. This is a common problem with OLED displays.

Apple can’t issue a software update to fix the issue, but there are some tactics you can use to avoid screen burn-in on your iPhone X.

The first thing we recommend is adjusting the time it takes your iPhone X’s screen to turn off when you aren’t using it. Go to Settings, tap Display & Brightness, go to Auto Lock and pick a shorter time.

You’ll also want to keep an eye on your screen brightness. Reducing the brightness can help keep screen burn-in to a minimum.

To do that, pull up Control Center from the top right of the screen and adjust it. You can also turn on Auto-Brightness in Settings by heading to Settings, > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > and make sure Auto-Brightness is toggled on.

How to Fix iPhone X Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth issues can be extremely tricky to fix and often times you’ll need to wait for Apple to deliver a new iOS update .

If you can’t wait for Apple’s next iOS update, go into your iPhone X’s Settings, then Bluetooth, and select the Bluetooth connection having issues using the “i” in the circle. Now tap Forget this Device. Try reconnecting.

If that fails, and it might, go into Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Try reconnecting the iPhone X to your Bluetooth device.

You might also try resetting your iPhone X’s settings to the factory defaults. To do this, go into Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This process could take a few minutes to complete.

If you’re dealing with Bluetooth issues in the car and the above fixes don’t help, you’ll need to consult your car’s manual. If you’re unable to reset the connection yourself, you should make an appointment with customer service at your local dealership.

How to Fix iPhone X Face ID Issues

The iPhone X comes with Face ID in place of Touch ID. Face ID’s been fairly accurate for us, but others are running into issues during the initial setup.

If your iPhone X is failing to register you face for Face ID, make sure you’re in a well-lit room. You also might need to bring the iPhone X closer or bring it more level.

apple iphone problem solving

If you’re having trouble unlocking your phone, make sure you’re actively looking at the screen. You need to give the phone attention.

Over time, Face ID will learn your face so if you actively change your look (shave off all of your hair, etc), you might have to input your face again.

If Face ID problems persist, you might need to take your iPhone X into a store for diagnostic tests on the phone’s rear camera. If those fail, Apple will replace the phone.

According to several reports , Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers are now able to do a unit replacement for devices suffering from unfixable Face ID issues.

If you are dealing with unfixable Face ID issues, you’re encouraged to book an appointment with an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store via the company’s  Contact Apple Support .

How to Fix iPhone X Sound Issues

The iPhone X’s stereo speakers should produce loud, crisp audio, but if your sound starts to crackle or sound muffled, you need to address the issue.

If you’re noticing a crackling sound, make sure you’re running the latest version of iOS 16 .

If you’re running the latest version of iOS 16 and you’re still noticing sound issues, restart your iPhone X. Press and hold the side button and either volume button at the same time and then slide to power it down.

You can also try performing a hard reset . Press Volume Up and let go, press Volume Down and let go, and press and hold the side button until the Apple Logo appears. The phone will reboot itself.

If you’re still noticing issues, try turning Bluetooth off and on. If sound is still missing or distorted, make sure you don’t have debris blocking the speaker grille or the Lightning Dock.

If your iPhone X microphone suddenly stops working or starts randomly cutting out, restart your phone.

You can also try restoring your phone from a backup. If that doesn’t work, get in touch with Apple because your issue might be hardware-related.

If you start noticing a sudden drop in call quality, restart your iPhone X. You’ll also want to make sure you’re running the latest iOS software.

If you’re still noticing issues, check and make sure your phone’s receiver to make sure it isn’t blocked. The receiver is that little slit located at the top of the iPhone X’s screen near the front-facing camera. There could be debris buildup or it could be that your screen protector is blocking it.

You can also try removing your case (if you’re using one), disabling Bluetooth (there could be interference due to another device in the area), or switching LTE from Voice & Data to just Data.

To do that head into Settings, tap Cellular, tap Cellular Data Options, tap Enable LTE, and then tap Data Only.

How to Fix iPhone X Performance Issues

If you’re dealing with random lag, random reboots, or another performance issue, take a look at our guide to fixing poor performance .

How to Fix Poor iPhone X Wireless Charging Issues

If you’re trying to wirelessly charge your iPhone X and it’s giving you problems, here are a few things to try.

If wireless charging stops working and you’re using an iPhone X case to store credit cards or security passes, remove those before charging your phone. You also might try taking your case off.

If you’re using a third party accessory to charge your iPhone X, make sure the device is Apple certified. You can do that via Apple’s website .

What To Do If Your iPhone X Can’t Connect to the App Store

If your iPhone X suddenly can’t connect to the App Store, the first thing to do is to check and  make sure the App Store isn’t down . If it’s active, here are a few quick fixes to try.

First, restart your iPhone X. If that doesn’t work, make sure cellular data on. Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Scroll down to the App Store and toggle it on if it’s off.

If that doesn’t help, you’ll want to sync the date and time on your iPhone X by going to Settings > General > Date & Time. Toggle Set Automatically to off then scroll down to set the data and time manually.

Go to the App Store, keep it open for a few seconds and go back to Date & Time and toggle Set Automatically to On. Now close the App Store in your multitasking tray and open it up again and see if your iPhone X can establish a connection.

How to Fix iPhone X Cellular Data Problems

If your iPhone X displays the “No Service” symbol and you can’t connect your cellular provider’s network, here’s what to do. First, restart your phone. This typically fixes the issue, at least temporarily.

If that doesn’t help, check your service provider for outages. You can do that on social media sites like Twitter and you’ll also want to check  Down Detector .

If your provider’s network is up, flip on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds before turning it off. Check your iPhone X’s connection again.

If that still doesn’t alleviate the issue, toggle Cellular Data and/or LTE off and on. To shut LTE off, go into Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data Options, and then toggle Enable LTE  to Off. Turn it back on when you need to.

To shut off Cellular Data completely without turning off your other services go to Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data, and toggle it off. Toggle it back on and check your connection.

How to Fix iPhone X Problems If Nothing Works

If you can’t find a fix for your iPhone X in the sections above, here are a few more resources.

Head to Apple’s discussion forums and ask for help. You can also ping Apple Support on Twitter  or make contact with support on the company’s website .

If Apple’s online customer service is unable to help, you can try downgrading to an older version of iOS if one is available for the iPhone X.

If you can’t or don’t want to downgrade, you can schedule an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple Store.

You can also go nuclear and factory reset your iPhone X. Factory resetting your device will wipe everything stored on the iPhone X and return it to the way it was when you first took it out of the box. Make sure backup all of your important data before you make this move.

Once you’ve backed up all of your files, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, a factory reset should only be used as a last resort.

Apple TV tried being a sports hub, but now ESPN’s launching a competitor

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

Apple’s TV app is one of the few places trying to aggregate sports in the streaming age. But today, ESPN announced the launch of a similar effort. ESPN’s app and ESPN.com now offer a ‘Where to Watch’ feature, making it easy to follow your favorite sports by letting ESPN tell you where each game can be watched.

Solving sports’ streaming problem

ESPN’s ‘ Where to Watch ’ feature does exactly what Apple has been trying to do with its TV app. It aims to solve the modern problem of fragmented programming.

In the days of linear, your favorite team’s games might be on one of a few different channels.

Today, you often have to navigate not only several linear channels, but also a variety of streaming services—which you may or may not be subscribed to.

ESPN’s ‘Where to Watch’ won’t provide access to games for you, but it will at least tell you where each game is available.

ESPN is one of the partners of the upcoming Venu Sports bundle , which is currently delayed due to legal troubles. But when it launches, it will undoubtedly feature prominently in ‘Where to Watch’ and make the feature more valuable.

Apple’s missed opportunity with sports

Apple’s TV app has had basically the same ‘Where to Watch’ feature for years. The problem is, Apple isn’t a leader in sports. Sports fans don’t think of Apple when they think about where to find sports info. Instead, they think of a brand like ESPN.

It doesn’t help that Apple launched a dedicated Sports app this year, but that app focuses only on scores.

  • If you want to watch a game, you have to tap a link and jump into the TV app to view all available options.
  • And if you’re looking for sports news, that’s not inside the Sports app either—instead you have to open Apple News.

Apple’s own fragmented sports strategy has made it a weaker player in the race to aggregate sports for streaming. ESPN, meanwhile, stands poised for greater success.

Are you interested in ESPN’s new ‘Where to Watch’ feature? How could Apple find more success with sports? Let us know in the comments.
