Book Review-The Art Of Peace By Morihei Ueshiba & Translated and Edited By John Stevens

The Art of Peace is 186 pages of wisdom by Morihei Ueshiba. He lived from 1883 until 1969 and was the founder of the Japanese martial art Aikido. The book includes one wise nugget of philosophy per page. The writings on each page are short, but they need to be mentally digested slowly in order to fully understand the meaning. The knowledge in this book can be used not only in martial arts training, but also in daily life. The Art of Peace is a fantastic book that will assist in self-improvement.

Below are three examples of writing from the book The Art of Peace by Morihei Ueshiba:

Iron is Full of impurities that weaken it; through forging, it becomes steel and is transformed into a razor-sharp sword. Human beings develop in the same fashion.

Do not fail To learn from The pure voice of an Ever-flowing mountain stream Splashing over the rocks.

Ultimately, You Must Forget about technique. The further you progress, the fewer teachings there are. The Great Path is really No Path.

Book Review

Reviewed by Vincent Dublado for Readers' Favorite

Second Lieutenant Robert Moriarty became one of the youngest Marine pilots at the age of nineteen, and at twenty flew the F-4B: the hottest fighter aircraft in the world. At twenty, he became a First Lieutenant and at twenty-two, a Marine captain. During his military career, he flew 832 combat missions in Vietnam. The Art of Peace is a definitive book about his war experiences and his take on military history. It reflects the facts lacking in most written personal accounts by men in uniform. In his commentaries, he makes a clear distinction on the difference between loving combat and hating war. While he and his fellow pilots were bombing Laos and Cambodia, they knew something that even the enemies knew on why the U.S. lost the Vietnam War. This is a story that will make you rethink the concept of what is good conflict. The Art of Peace is a bold book that reconsiders military history about the Vietnam War. As Moriarty writes with raw emotion and a vivid recall of what he has witnessed, his chapters provide discoveries on the realities of the U.S. participation in armed conflicts, what combat veterans understand about war, and the accountability of political leaders. From a first-person point of view and as a veteran made wiser by his realities, he tackles his subject with greater attention to the truth, including the relationship between technical and human factors and the influence of political decisions. The Art of Peace is an integral part of military history written with an intellectual skill that is a must-read for its areas of inquiry. It will prove invaluable for students, historians, and anyone who lost a loved one to the horrors of war.

Nancy Pelosi’s Just-Released Book Is Already Surging Up The Amazon Charts

Nancy Pelosi may no longer be the leader of the House Democratic Caucus, but there’s little doubt that she still wields enormous influence in the party. It’s widely believed that she played a key role in President Biden dropping his reelection bid , and her behind-the-scenes push to get Democratic nominee Kamala Harris to choose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate may have tipped the scales in his favor.

Her latest book, The Art of Power: My Story as America’s First Woman Speaker of the House provides a behind-the-scenes look at instrumental moments in her nearly four decades in Congress, with a focus on the legislative accomplishments she achieved as Speaker of The House. It was published on August 6 by Simon & Schuster, and it’s already the #1 Best Seller in Women’s Biographies on Amazon and in the top 10 bestsellers on Amazon overall .

The Art of Power: My Story as America’s First Woman Speaker of the House

In addition to instrumental legislative achievements, the book details the horrific moments of political violence Pelosi experienced. She details her account of the January 6 insurrection from inside the Capitol, which Donald Trump has incredulously blamed Pelosi for . She also discusses her family’s experience following the brutal attack on her husband in their San Francisco home in 2022.

Ever cautious and calculated, Pelosi has disputed the characterization of The Art of Power as a memoir. But the book does detail bookend moments in Pelosi’s life, including her decision to get into politics in the first place at the urging of her daughter.

It also discusses what she sees as her signature legislative accomplishment, the passing of the Affordable Care Act, and she recounts Senator John McCain’s admission to her that he would cast the deciding vote against its repeal.

The book does not discuss any possible role Pelosi may have played in Biden ending his reelection bid , and in a recent interview with NPR , she insisted that “I didn’t call one person, people called me,” to dispute the idea that she was actively pushing for Biden to drop out.

The Art of Power is rapidly climbing up the book charts, including landing in the top 10 on Amazon’s bestseller list and the top 10 on Barnes & Noble’s bestseller list . It’s available in hardcover, Kindle, audio CD, and audiobook formats .

PARIS 1944: Occupation, Resistance, Liberation, by Patrick Bishop

The Liberation of Paris in 1944 is an undeniably alluring subject, especially in the wake of the recent French elections. In July, a coalition of left-wing parties mounted a stunning, last-minute rebuke to what was shaping up to be the country’s first far-right government since World War II .

We’ve long nurtured the romantic image of Parisians taking up arms against fascist occupiers, complete with black-and-white photo montages. Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa provided the documentary snapshots; Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall suggested the glamorous characters.

Still, beyond recounting the chaotic exuberance of that week in August 1944 — the labor strikes, the acts of sabotage, the police rebellion — the question for historians trying to approach the subject now is how they will surprise us.

The British military historian and former war correspondent Patrick Bishop doesn’t offer a bold new analysis in his social history of the period, “Paris 1944.” Instead, he aims to highlight the symbolic power of that mythic city, by drawing the reader into the streets of Paris just in time for the 80th anniversary of its liberation.

Although it looked a lot like a people’s revolt against Nazi tyranny when the once-exiled Gen. Charles de Gaulle strode down the Champs-Élysées to Notre-Dame Cathedral on Aug. 26, 1944, scholars have long observed that it would have amounted to little without help from the Allies.

France was as divided then as it is today, and some Parisians were happy to go along with the new Nazi-backed regime . After the war, de Gaulle tried to paint a picture of a unified France under the yoke of Nazi occupation, the people fighting a tyranny imposed from without. That image persisted, but thanks to the historian Robert O. Paxton’s pioneering scholarship and Marcel Ophuls’s documentary film “The Sorrow and the Pity,” we now know how greatly exaggerated this story was.

Nancy Pelosi opens up about how she wields 'The Art of Power'

Simon & Schuster

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says her new book, The Art of Power , is not a memoir. Instead, she says, it's an inside look at specific moments in American history – like the 2008 financial crisis and January 6 – and how she navigated them. In today's episode, the Speaker Emerita sits down with NPR's Mary Louise Kelly to discuss why she didn't want to run for office in the first place, how she looks back on some of the biggest decisions she's made while in power, and what role she played in President Biden's decision to step down from the 2024 race.

Editorial Reviews

-In her erudite and well-reasoned book, The Art of Peace: Engaging a Complex World, Juliana Geran Pilon makes the case for -rebalancing- U.S strategy. In introducing this ambitious topic, she poses the question -why is the art of peace not practiced alongside the art of war?- This may seem almost a rhetorical question at first blush, but it leads readers into Pilon's compelling analysis, which is peppered with insights from such varied thinkers as Sun Tzu, Colin Gray, Bono, Grotius, Emma Sky, and Michael Flynn.

Pilon's excellent book can offer Trump's new foreign policy team practical lessons worth applying.-

_Jack Caravelli, The Washington Free Beacon

-What is really unique about this book is that she shows how Sun Tzu's concepts were applied (admittedly subconsciously) by our Founding Fathers and most importantly that together Sun Tzu and the Founding Fathers still are applicable to the global geo-strategic environment of the 21st Century. This book is a critique of American strategy and strategic culture and describes the disease from which we suffer - Strategic Deficit Disorder. It shows us how standing true to the principles of both Sun Tzu and our Founding Fathers will make us better national security practitioners who strive to practice the -art of peace- as well as the art of war. . . . Any book that is praised by Gen.(R) James N. Mattis, LTG H.R. McMaster, and Morihei Ueshiba is one that should be read, highlighted, tabbed, and re-read by students of strategy and those who aspire to develop and implement policy and national security strategy. In short, if you want to -do strategy- read this book.-

--David S. Maxwell, Small Wars Journal

-Juliana Pilon is to be commended for pressing the question of American competence in carrying out its global engagement. As she rightly points out in her book, we need to fully engage both our fundamental powers in American foreign policy: the power of inspiration and, when and where needed, the power of intimidation. What is more, we should be able to get the right balance and shape the arguments in such a manner that we can achieve a non-partisan approach to foreign policy and employment of the military.-

--General James Mattis, US Marine Corps

-This is an important, well crafted, and compelling book. Juliana Geran Pilon explains disconnects between the instrumental use of violence and objectives in recent and ongoing conflicts. The neglect of the political and human nature of war has been a common cause of strategic failure as well as a common flaw in theories that oftentimes contribute to those failures. Indeed, recent wartime plans have exhibited a narcissistic approach, failing to account for interactions with determined enemies and other complicating political, cultural, historical and economic factors. Armed conflict is a competition and, as Dr. Pilon points out, winning the peace requires fighting across all contested spaces and considering the consolidation of military gains as an integral part of war. It is not enough to read The Art of Peace . We must also heed its lessons.-

--H.R. McMaster, author of Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies that Led to Vietnam

-Dr. Juliana Pilon is perfectly positioned to provide a clear and convincing way ahead. Bringing both formidable academic experience and a professional career spent in the field, she is that rare scholar-practitioner who speaks with equal credibility to our national leaders and the Soldier guarding a lonely outpost in mountains of the Hindu Kush. In The Art of Peace , Juliana sheds light on the shortcomings in our thinking about strategy, at the same time demonstrating that things were not always this way. More importantly, they need not remain so in the future.-

--Colonel Michael Eastman, US Army (from the foreword)

-[A] compelling overview of the severe deficiencies in US national security strategy, policy, and operations - it is one of the strongest indictments I have seen of our total inability to wage peace instead of war. . . . essential reading for the war colleges, business schools, and graduate programs that wish to offer their students material relevant to creating a prosperous world at peace.-

--Robert David Steele, Public Intelligence Blog
