But nowadays marriage is considered to be a contract. The recent developments in science and technology have opened new avenues for people. Women are now more liberated. This has elevated stress among families.

Another drawback is unemployment. Advancement in technology means deploying machines in place of humans. This has resulted in unemployment and resentment among the societies.

We should not undermine the positive impacts of science and technology as well. We all work and live for a better future for our children. We try and send them to the best possible schools so that they may get the best of education. Modern technology has developed various means by which students can be imparted to the best of their knowledge. For instance, nowadays schools and colleges have computers in classrooms. Other fields where the impact of science and technology on society is visible, are urbanization (expansion of cities to give better life), modernization (for safety, comfort, and swiftness), and development in the means of transport (for comfort and swiftness).

To conclude, we can say that though science and technology have brought development, comfort, safety, swiftness, and knowledge, they have also been the reason for the plunging of moral values.

It is essential to note that science and technology are being used to develop the necessary measures to counteract environmental degradation. What is the importance of Science and Technology in the modern world? This paper provides proof and examples to show the contribution and importance of science and technology in the world today. Science is defined as the systematic study of the physical and the natural world through practical experiments and observation. Technology means the application of scientific knowledge for the purpose of practice. Therefore, science and technology involves the study of the natural and physical world to obtain knowledge, which is applied for practical reasons. According to history, the modern world designates the time around 1500 BC when many nations in Europe began developing and expanding their powers. The major characteristics of the modern world is that change is easy to accept. Furthermore, the people in the modern world believe that economic development and technology will affect their development. First, science and technology has led to increase in food production, which started during the period of agrarian revolution. The plow was among the first technologies used to improve food production. The technological advancement in food production is characterized by the use of tractors in farming; use of fertilizers and the application of scientific procedures to ensure food safety is not compromised. Science and technology made it possible for humankind to store food for a long time without spoiling. The increase in food production explains the increase in the world population, which started around the time that humankind abandoned hunting and gathering as a means of finding food. Science and technology have expanded the globe since it has made transport and communication. It is responsible for the invention of telephones, which has made it possible for people in different places to communicate easily. The coming of the steam engine revolutionized the transport sector because people could travel long distance in a relatively shorter time. This has been made better by the invention of the diesel engine, which is more efficient and cheaper than the steam engine. The ability of human beings to travel to far places made it possible for different cultures to interact. The interaction of different cultures led to new inventions in terms of social life and practices. Science and Technology led to the growth of trade worldwide. This is because it is possible for different people very far away to do business with no problems at all. Science and technology have also turned the world into a global village because it is easy for people to interact. This has greatly minimized the differences among the different cultures in the world. The growth in science and technology has led to increase in environmental degradation. Issues of global warming have been the focal point of global discussions as the world tries to save the environment. This has led to increase in natural disasters like earthquakes and floods, which has claimed many lives. Global warming has been caused by increased in carbon (IV) oxide emissions, in the atmospheres. Furthermore, science and technology has led to the creation of industries, which emit harmful gases that contain chlorofluorocarbons, which deplete the ozone layer. Increase in chronic diseases like cancer is attributed to the harmful emissions that interfere with natural make up of cells in humans. However, science and technology has been applied to help avoid further environmental damage. The introduction of alternative power sources like wind turbines, solar technology and hydropower. Science and technology are responsible for great strides in the medical industry. This contributed to economic growth in the modern world because life expectancy improved. In addition, the number of people dying from preventable disease greatly reduced. Improvement in the health sector coupled with an increase in agricultural production is responsible for the increase in the world population. Technology and development have influenced the view of thing like the marriage and the relationship between a man and a woman. It has led to a society that is grappling with issues of equality and the real meaning of marriage. Science and technology have led to increase in literacy levels. Increase in literacy levels has led to women fighting for equality. The view of marriage has changed as a result of increase in science and technology. There are increases in the rate of divorce, which implies that divine concept of marriage has changed. Science and technology have also influenced the view of religion in the society (Bridgstock, 89). In the old times, a cultural group had one common religion that all the people believed. However, globalization has led to changes religion. In the old tradition, religion formed the center of the society and provided guidance. However, in the modern world the number of people who believe in science only have increased. Religion lost part of its influence because science could explain some things that were considered supernatural in the old tradition world. The effect of science and technology extends to the mental view of society. For example, the people who lived during the start of the industrial revolution believed that they had the most recent technology. On the contrary, the people in the recent world view the technology of the industrial revolution as simple. The developments in science and technology has influenced the society in terms of social habits. The growth in the computer industry has seen the invention of computer games, which are popular among kids. This has influenced the social habits of children living in the modern world. Children spent most of their time in computers and video games. They have no time to relate with other human beings, which results to poor social habits. The level of interaction between individuals has been significantly reduced. Instead, the level of interaction between human beings and machines is still increasing (Wallerstein, 78). In conclusion, science and technology has influenced the modern world both positively and negatively. The positive influence includes an increase in levels of literacy, technological advancement and greater understanding of the nature. The negative influences include degradation of social behavior, damage of the environment and the loss of humanity. Science and technology have led to a world of selfish beings who have no care for other people. These people live secluded from the rest of the world and form close connections with machines. Without a doubt, science and technology is pivotal in the modern world.

Perseverance Pays Off for Student Challenge Winners

As radioisotopes power the Perseverance rover to explore Mars, perseverance “powered” three winners to write essays each year till they achieved their mission goal of winning NASA’s Power to Explore Challenge . These students explored behind the scenes at NASA's Glenn Research Center and Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) in Cleveland after writing the top essays in the national contest.

The competition for kindergarten through 12th grade students focuses on the enabling power of radioisotopes. Students were challenged to learn how NASA has powered some of its most famous science missions and to dream up how their personal “superpower” would energize their own radioisotope-powered science mission.

Judges narrowed down over a seventeen hundred creative essays to 45 semi-finalists, who received prize packs, nine finalists, who participated in a videoconference with NASA experts, and three winners, who were awarded with a visit to NASA Glenn.

“I’m so impressed by the work of these talented young students. It’s wonderful to see their interest, innovation, and creativity at this stage in their lives. Our future is bright!

“I’m so impressed by the work of these talented young students,” said Dr. Wanda Peters, acting deputy center director at NASA Glenn. “It’s wonderful to see their interest, innovation, and creativity at this stage in their lives. Our future is bright!”

Rainie Lin , the kindergarten through fourth grade winner; Aadya Karthik , the fifth through eighth grade winner, and Thomas Liu , the ninth through 12th grade winner, toured several research facilities including the Electric Propulsion and Power Laboratory , Telescience Support Center , Graphics and Visualization Lab , and Simulated Lunar Operations Lab . Along the way, they met with engineers and researchers to learn about NASA’s missions and the technologies that are innovating exploration.

The next day students and their families traveled to GLSC, which houses NASA Glenn’s Visitor Center. Accompanied by members of NASA’s Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) team, the group toured the visitor center and explored the many interactive displays.

“It was our pleasure to host the three student winners of The Power to Explore Challenge, and I hope that this visit will further inspire and motivate them to pursue their interests in science and exploration,” said Carl Sandifer, manager for NASA’s RPS Program. "We are so impressed by the ideas and quality of the essays submitted this year and we can’t wait to what new ideas student come up with for next year’s challenge!”

The Power to Explore Challenge asked students to learn about the RPS, one of NASA’s “nuclear batteries” it uses to explore some of the most extreme destinations in our solar system and beyond. Students then wrote about their own power to achieve goals in 250 words or less.

China’s domination of electric cars, which is threatening to start a trade war, was born decades ago in university laboratories in Texas, when researchers discovered how to make batteries with minerals that were abundant and cheap.

Companies from China have recently built on those early discoveries, figuring out how to make the batteries hold a powerful charge and endure more than a decade of daily recharges. They are inexpensively and reliably manufacturing vast numbers of these batteries, producing most of the world’s electric cars and many other clean energy systems.

Batteries are just one example of how China is catching up with — or passing — advanced industrial democracies in its technological and manufacturing sophistication. It is achieving many breakthroughs in a long list of sectors, from pharmaceuticals to drones to high-efficiency solar panels.

Beijing’s challenge to the technological leadership that the United States has held since World War II is evidenced in China’s classrooms and corporate budgets, as well as in directives from the highest levels of the Communist Party.

A considerably larger share of Chinese students major in science, math and engineering than students in other big countries do. That share is rising further, even as overall higher education enrollment has increased more than tenfold since 2000.

Spending on research and development has surged, tripling in the past decade and moving China into second place after the United States. Researchers in China lead the world in publishing widely cited papers in 52 of 64 critical technologies, recent calculations by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute reveal.

A new approach to fine-tuning quantum materials

Quantum materials — those with electronic properties that are governed by the principles of quantum mechanics, such as correlation and entanglement — can exhibit exotic behaviors under certain conditions, such as the ability to transmit electricity without resistance, known as superconductivity. However, in order to get the best performance out of these materials, they need to be properly tuned, in the same way that race cars require tuning as well. A team led by Mingda Li, an associate professor in MIT’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE), has demonstrated a new, ultra-precise way to tweak the characteristics of quantum materials, using a particular class of these materials, Weyl semimetals, as an example.

The new technique is not limited to Weyl semimetals. “We can use this method for any inorganic bulk material, and for thin films as well,” maintains NSE postdoc Manasi Mandal, one of two lead authors of an open-access paper — published recently in Applied Physics Reviews — that reported on the group’s findings.

The experiment described in the paper focused on a specific type of Weyl semimetal, a tantalum phosphide (TaP) crystal. Materials can be classified by their electrical properties: metals conduct electricity readily, whereas insulators impede the free flow of electrons. A semimetal lies somewhere in between. It can conduct electricity, but only in a narrow frequency band or channel. Weyl semimetals are part of a wider category of so-called topological materials that have certain distinctive features. For instance, they possess curious electronic structures — kinks or “singularities” called Weyl nodes, which are swirling patterns around a single point (configured in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction) that resemble hair whorls or, more generally, vortices. The presence of Weyl nodes confers unusual, as well as useful, electrical properties. And a key advantage of topological materials is that their sought-after qualities can be preserved, or “topologically protected,” even when the material is disturbed.

“That’s a nice feature to have,” explains Abhijatmedhi Chotrattanapituk, a PhD student in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the other lead author of the paper. “When you try to fabricate this kind of material, you don’t have to be exact. You can tolerate some imperfections, some level of uncertainty, and the material will still behave as expected.”

Like water in a dam

The “tuning” that needs to happen relates primarily to the Fermi level, which is the highest energy level occupied by electrons in a given physical system or material. Mandal and Chotrattanapituk suggest the following analogy: Consider a dam that can be filled with varying levels of water. One can raise that level by adding water or lower it by removing water. In the same way, one can adjust the Fermi level of a given material simply by adding or subtracting electrons.

To fine-tune the Fermi level of the Weyl semimetal, Li’s team did something similar, but instead of adding actual electrons, they added negative hydrogen ions (each consisting of a proton and two electrons) to the sample. The process of introducing a foreign particle, or defect, into the TaP crystal — in this case by substituting a hydrogen ion for a tantalum atom — is called doping. And when optimal doping is achieved, the Fermi level will coincide with the energy level of the Weyl nodes. That’s when the material’s desired quantum properties will be most fully realized.

For Weyl semimetals, the Fermi level is especially sensitive to doping. Unless that level is set close to the Weyl nodes, the material’s properties can diverge significantly from the ideal. The reason for this extreme sensitivity owes to the peculiar geometry of the Weyl node. If one were to think of the Fermi level as the water level in a reservoir, the reservoir in a Weyl semimetal is not shaped like a cylinder; it’s shaped like an hourglass, and the Weyl node is located at the narrowest point, or neck, of that hourglass. Adding too much or too little water would miss the neck entirely, just as adding too many or too few electrons to the semimetal would miss the node altogether.

Fire up the hydrogen

To reach the necessary precision, the researchers utilized MIT’s two-stage “Tandem” ion accelerator — located at the Center for Science and Technology with Accelerators and Radiation (CSTAR) — and buffeted the TaP sample with high-energy ions coming out of the powerful (1.7 million volt) accelerator beam. Hydrogen ions were chosen for this purpose because they are the smallest negative ions available and thus alter the material less than a much larger dopant would. “The use of advanced accelerator techniques allows for greater precision than was ever before possible, setting the Fermi level to milli-electron volt [thousandths of an electron volt] accuracy,” says Kevin Woller, the principal research scientist who leads the CSTAR lab. “Additionally, high-energy beams allow for the doping of bulk crystals beyond the limitations of thin films only a few tens of nanometers thick.”

The procedure, in other words, involves bombarding the sample with hydrogen ions until a sufficient number of electrons are taken in to make the Fermi level just right. The question is: how long do you run the accelerator, and how do you know when enough is enough? The point being that you want to tune the material until the Fermi level is neither too low nor too high.

“The longer you run the machine, the higher the Fermi level gets,” Chotrattanapituk says. “The difficulty is that we cannot measure the Fermi level while the sample is in the accelerator chamber.” The normal way to handle that would be to irradiate the sample for a certain amount of time, take it out, measure it, and then put it back in if the Fermi level is not high enough. “That can be practically impossible,” Mandal adds.

To streamline the protocol, the team has devised a theoretical model that first predicts how many electrons are needed to increase the Fermi level to the preferred level and translates that to the number of negative hydrogen ions that must be added to the sample. The model can then tell them how long the sample ought to be kept in the accelerator chamber.

The good news, Chotrattanapituk says, is that their simple model agrees within a factor of 2 with trusted conventional models that are much more computationally intensive and may require access to a supercomputer. The group’s main contributions are two-fold, he notes: offering a new, accelerator-based technique for precision doping and providing a theoretical model that can guide the experiment, telling researchers how much hydrogen should be added to the sample depending on the energy of the ion beam, the exposure time, and the size and thickness of the sample.

Fine things to come with fine-tuning

This could pave the way to a major practical advance, Mandal notes, because their approach can potentially bring the Fermi level of a sample to the requisite value in a matter of minutes — a task that, by conventional methods, has sometimes taken weeks without ever reaching the required degree of milli-eV precision.

Li believes that an accurate and convenient method for fine-tuning the Fermi level could have broad applicability. “When it comes to quantum materials, the Fermi level is practically everything,” he says. “Many of the effects and behaviors that we seek only manifest themselves when the Fermi level is at the right location.” With a well-adjusted Fermi level, for example, one could raise the critical temperature at which materials become superconducting. Thermoelectric materials, which convert temperature differences into an electrical voltage, similarly become more efficient when the Fermi level is set just right. Precision tuning might also play a helpful role in quantum computing.

Thomas Zac Ward, a senior scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, offered a bullish assessment: “This work provides a new route for the experimental exploration of the critical, yet still poorly understand, behaviors of emerging materials. The ability to precisely control the Fermi level of a topological material is an important milestone that can help bring new quantum information and microelectronics device architectures to fruition.”

The boards of too many publicly traded companies are downright timid when considering matters involving science and technology. More often than not, they focus on security and digitization—a defensive posture that fails to consider the bigger opportunities emerging from new materials, space science, and a better understanding of the genome—to name just a few areas of opportunity. It’s easy to be lulled into thinking that science does not matter to a nontech company. But that distinction isn’t quite so meaningful when it comes to capitalizing on the opportunities from technological change that is now ubiquitous, rapid, turbulent, and often emanating from increasingly unlikely corners.

The authors have observed firsthand an effective way to address this gap: the board technology committee. Drawing on the achievements of tech committees at AES, Johnson & Johnson, and Altria (companies for which the authors are or have been directors), they describe how these entities can advance the interests of organizations and offer advice on how to set one up.

By worrying primarily about security and IT, they’re missing out on big opportunities across the sciences.
