HTML5 introduces the Speech API for AI Speech Synthesis and Speech Recognition.

This is the easiest way to use the spoken word in your app or website.

AI Speech Synthesis or more commonly known as Text To Speech (TTS) is now available in most modern browsers.

Gone are the days of waiting for Text To Speech engines to render MP3 audio files from text and then download them from servers.

Today the browser can instantly speak text on the client side and with quite reasonable quality.

But there is a problem, each browser and device can have a different set of “AI Voices”. You can’t be sure of a consistent user experience when it comes to the spoken voice or accent.

If you make a call to the AI speak API using the default AI voice it will sound very different on different users devices and browsers. In some cases you won’t even know if the user will get a male or female AI voice.

Although, you make a direct call to the AI speak API and choose a specific voice like “Google UK Female”, if a user is browsing on iOS with Safari the AI voice will not be available.

Can someone else use descript’s overdub tts to clone my voice.

No. When creating an Overdub Voice, Descript users must positively affirm their identity and give Descript their express consent to train and generate a synthesized version of their voice.

Voice-training data that does not include this Voice ID cannot be used to create an Overdub Voice. In other words, unless you specifically consent to Overdub Voice creation, Descript will not create your Overdub Voice.

We verify this consent by authenticating the audio file uploaded against our training script to ensure that the voice recorded belongs to the person submitting it.

Is Descript Text-to-Speech free?

Overdub text-to-speech is free on all Descript accounts. Pro accounts get an unlimited Overdub vocabulary.

Is there a difference between Overdub generated with the Pro subscription vs. a Creator or Free subscription?

Yes. While you can create a custom Voice on Overdub with any subscription,  Free and Creator plans are limited to a list of the 1,000 most common vocabulary words. Any words that are not on that list will be replaced with "jibber" or "jabber." To avoid this gibberish and gain access to the full vocabulary list, you can upgrade to the Pro subscription.

This web app allows you to generate voice audio from text - no login needed, and it's completely free! It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

There are plenty of reasons to use a text-to-speech tool, also called a screen reader. I, for example, like listening to my own articles while copy-editing because I miss fewer mistakes if I hear my own writing out loud. If you want your computer or phone to read to you, we have the best tools for the job.

We recommend a few standalone text-to-speech apps here, sure, but you probably don't need them. That's because every operating system, and several well-known pieces of software, offer a text-to-speech feature, and they're all quite good. Similarly, most devices and some writing apps also include speech-to-text tools so that you can dictate rather than type. Best Text-to-Speech App for Windows

Balabolka is a free downloadable app for Windows (I tested it on Windows 11; it works on Windows XP or later). You can paste text into the app or open almost any document file format directly, such as text files, Word documents, and even ebooks. You can then press play to start listening to the app read aloud, or you can export an audio file if you prefer. Balabolka doesn't have many voices by default, and the ones it does have are fairly robotic. You can add more voices, though, and customize the application in all kinds of ways. Even though the app is a bit clunky, it’s the best Windows-specific app I’ve found outside of the one built into Edge and Microsoft Office (which I prefer).

Microsoft/Edge Read Aloud in Immersive Reader

Microsoft Office applications have a built-in text-to-speech feature, and the quality of the voices is fantastic. In any document, click the View tab, select Immersive Reader, and then press the play button that appears at the bottom. You hear your document read back to you with the corresponding words highlighted as it goes. Immersive Reader is perfect for copy editing and reviewing long documents. Microsoft Edge has this feature, too (it's one of the best Microsoft Edge tricks ). Just go to Immersive Reader mode and then Read Aloud.

Best Text-to-Speech Browser Extension

Read Aloud is an extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox that can read whatever website you currently have open. Just click the button in the toolbar to start listening. You can control playback and follow along with the text in the pop-up window. A wide variety of voices are in the settings, including premium ones from Amazon and Google. It's the best tool I could find for listening to Google Docs, and there's also support for PDF files and Kindle books. I tried the PDF feature and it worked better for those documents than the other apps I tested.

Select to Speak

Android's Select to Speak feature can be found in the settings under Accessibility. Turn it on and you can have it read text in any app when you either swipe up from the bottom of the screen with two fingers or press both of the volume keys at once, depending on how you configure it. Controls show up toward the bottom of the screen, allowing you to start and control playback. Select to Speak is simple to use and supports a variety of voices, which you can configure in the settings. There's even experimental support for reading the text inside images.

Spoken Content

Every Apple device comes with Spoken Content , a feature that uses Siri's high-quality voices to read text out loud. On a Mac, you can enable the feature by heading to System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content and checking the Speak Selection option, which allows you to trigger the current document or selected text in any application using a keyboard shortcut (Option-Esc). As the tool reads the text, it highlights the corresponding words on the page in most applications, allowing you to read along. On-screen buttons give you control to speed up, slow down, pause, and so forth. It's the fastest way to listen to text I found on any platform.

Spoken Content Mobile

The iPhone's text-to-speech feature is very similar to the one on macOS and it even has the same name. You can turn it on in the Settings app under Accessibility. Once Spoken Content is enabled, any text you highlight in any application will have a Speak option, which you tap to activate. There are also options for reading all text on the current screen, with an optional always-on control button.

Best Text-to-Speech Web Reader

The free app TTSMaker is the best text-to-speech app I can find for running in a browser. Just copy your text and paste it into the box, fill out the captcha, click Convert to Speech and the application will start reading your text for you. Even better, you can download the reading as an MP3 file and even use it in commercial projects. Most similar services charge a subscription for downloading audio and commercial usage, so this is a good deal. Even better, there's a wide variety of voices and most of them sound quite good.

However, once you get the hang of it, this makes for a handy  tool, particularly useful for students or those with accessibility needs.

There are lots of capable text-to-speech programs on the market. Other options like Synthesia, Listnr, and ElevenLabs also came up during the research process for this list and certainly have their fair share of supporters. The final picks came about as the result of various deciding factors.

I tried out many of these programs personally, giving NaturalReader, TTSMaker, and Read Aloud the most thorough run-throughs. I've even had past experience with some of these as well. I also explored the free trials for Murf AI, Descript, and Speechify. Ultimately, these options were chosen based on a mix of my experience, reviews from other industry-trusted platforms, and user ratings on different app stores and review sites.

We also wanted to account for the varying tasks that users typically use text-to-speech programs for. Whether you're a student going through homework, a content creator seeking a way to streamline the production process, or you just need something handy for reading recipes out loud, there will hopefully be something on this list that suits your specific needs and situation.

Not wanting to pay the price to see the 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at the Bitcoin conference in Nashville this weekend? You might not need to buy a ticket at all.

Passes for Bitcoin2024  took a jump recently, the VIP "Whale Pass" tickets for the three-day conference went from $10,999 before the RNC to $21,000 per person now. The more basic ticket packages cost $699 and $3,999. But you don't have to shell out all that money; Bitcoin2024 is expected livestream the former President's speech along with other speakers at the conference Saturday.

Former President Donald Trump called on Christians to flood the polls in November, promising that if they vote him into office, they "won’t have to vote again" in four years. 

Trump’s July 26 comments came at The Believers’ Summit, a gathering intended to provide attendees with "practical knowledge and strategies to live out their faith boldly and counteract the prevailing 'woke' narratives," its website said. The summit, held in West Palm Beach, Florida, was hosted by Turning Point Action, the political advocacy arm of Turning Point USA, a group founded by Charlie Kirk to reach young conservatives.

Democrats tore into Trump’s comment. Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, portrayed Trump’s comments as antidemocratic and a "promise to end democracy." "When Vice President Harris says this election is about freedom she means it," the Harris campaign said in a statement . 

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., shared a video of Trump’s remarks, writing, "This year democracy is on the ballot, and if we are to save it, we must vote against authoritarianism."

Trump’s campaign pushed back. "President Trump was talking about the importance of faith, uniting this country and bringing prosperity to every American, as opposed to the divisive political environment that has sowed so much division and even resulted in an assassination attempt," campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung wrote in an email to PolitiFact. 

Prominent Republicans defended Trump, including Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who said on CNN’s "State of the Union" that Trump was "obviously making a joke." New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu called the remarks "classic Trump-ism."

"I think he’s just trying to make the point that this stuff can be fixed," Sununu said on ABC News’ "This Week." "You know, obviously, we want everybody to vote in all elections. But I think he was just trying to make a hyperbolic point that it can be fixed as long as he gets back into office and all that."

With widespread interpretations of Trump’s comments, we’re using our In Context feature to let voters review his speech and come to their own conclusions.

Trump spoke for over an hour at the summit. About halfway through, he discussed voter turnout among Christians, suggesting that they do not vote "proportionately" to their numbers. "You know, I don’t want to scold you, but do you know that Christians do not vote proportionately? They don’t vote like they should. They’re not big voters," he said. 

Toward the end of Trump’s speech, he denounced Democrats who "don’t want to approve voter ID." He then implored Christians to turn out in droves and prevent Democrats from "cheating." 

Here’s what he said:

"We have to win this election, most important election ever. We want a landslide that’s too big to rig. If you want to save America, get your friends, get your family, get everyone you know and vote. Vote early, vote absentee, vote on Election Day. I don’t care how, but you have to get out and vote. And again, Christians, get out and vote just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians.

"I love you, Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."

Trump concluded his remarks by emphasizing the importance of faith throughout American history and lamenting that the nation is now in decline. 

"We are a nation that has lost its way, but we are not going to allow this horror to continue," he said. "Less than four years ago, we were a great nation, and we will soon be a great nation again."

When his book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was published in 2016, JD Vance sent an email apologizing to a close friend from his Yale Law School days. The friend identified as transgender, but Mr. Vance referred to them in the book as a lesbian.

“Hey Sofes, here’s an excerpt from my book,” Mr. Vance wrote to his friend, Sofia Nelson. “I send this to you not just to brag, but because I’m sure if you read it you’ll notice reference to ‘an extremely progressive lesbian.’”

“I recognize now that this may not accurately reflect how you think of yourself, and for that I am really sorry,” he wrote. “I hope you’re not offended, but if you are, I’m sorry! Love you, JD.”

Nelson wrote back the same day, calling Mr. Vance “buddy” and thanking him for “being sweet,” adding, “If you had written gender queer radical pragmatist, nobody would know what you mean.” Nelson asked for an autographed copy, then signed off with, “Love, Sofia.”

That exchange is from a series of emails between two friends, part of a close-knit group of 16 students who remained together throughout their first law school semester in the fall of 2010. As now-Senator Vance seeks the vice presidency, Nelson has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, primarily from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times.
