Students are expected to play a part by making a good-faith effort to obtain external fellowships at some point during their funding period, and they should be encouraged to pursue such opportunities. It is important to understand that the overall graduate awards budget is dependent on a significant number of students obtaining such external support. External grants and fellowships also benefit students because they bring distinction, and competing for such awards provides opportunities to practice grant-writing skills that could serve students well in their future careers.

Fellowship stipends: Require no service. Many departments also offer endowed fellowships.

For example, members of the faculty have led modern innovations in theories of portfolio choice and savings behavior, which have significantly impacted the asset pricing techniques used by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Another example is the contribution by faculty members to the analysis of financial institutions and markets, which is fundamental to our understanding of the trade-offs between economic systems and their implications for financial fragility and crises.

Faculty research, both empirical and theoretical, includes such areas as:

  • Structure of financial markets
  • Formation and behavior of financial asset prices
  • Banking and monetary systems
  • Corporate control and capital structure
  • Saving and capital formation
  • International financial markets

Candidates with undergraduate training in economics, mathematics, engineering, statistics, and other quantitative disciplines have an ideal background for doctoral studies in this field.

Effective 2023, The Wharton Finance PhD Program is now STEM certified.

PhD program overview

The primary objective of the PhD program in finance at the W. P. Carey School of Business is to train students for careers as finance professors at major research universities. The program provides a challenging course of study in the most recent developments in both the theoretical and empirical aspects of financial economics. This course of study, along with work in economics and statistics, serves as preparation for understanding and critical analysis of current issues in finance.

PhD students work with a distinguished faculty that comprises one of the most productive research groups in the world. Recent surveys of research productivity rank the Department of Finance among the best in the world for research output in the top journals. Our faculty produces cutting-edge empirical research in the areas of equity markets, corporate finance, organization structure, international finance, financial institutions and asset pricing. The program is relatively small, so that faculty-student mentoring relationships are promoted and PhD students receive personal attention. The program seeks highly capable students with a strong academic background and preferably with work experience.

Admission to the PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in finance is granted to applicants who present convincing evidence of high-order analytical skills, intellectual curiosity and the ability to work independently in pursuing scholarly research. Applicants should possess the intellectual curiosity and discipline required for original inquiry. In addition to the general requirements of the ASU Graduate College, applicants must submit a resume, three letters of recommendation, scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and a brief statement of their career objectives. While many of our accepted students have an MBA or M.S. in a business-related field, others have a background in another area, such as engineering, economics, mathematics, statistics, physics, etc.

Interested individuals will find it valuable to review the Information for Prospective Students found at the Graduate College site.

Inclusion at ASU

Arizona State University is deeply committed to positioning itself as one of the great new universities by seeking to build excellence, enhance access and have an impact on our community, state, nation and the world. To do that requires our faculty and staff to reflect the intellectual, ethnic and cultural diversity of our nation and world so that our students learn from the broadest perspectives, and we engage in the advancement of knowledge with the most inclusive understanding possible of the issues we are addressing through our scholarly activities.

We recognize that race and gender historically have been markers of diversity in institutions of higher education. However, at ASU, we believe that diversity includes additional categories such as socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, veteran status, nationality and intellectual perspective.

University of South Florida St. Petersburg

Main navigation, undergraduate major.

Finance is a term broadly describing the study and system of money, investments and other financial instruments. Finance can be broadly divided into the following distinct categories: public finance, corporate finance, personal finance and the newly emerging field of financial technology or fintech.

DEGREE OPTIONS

The Muma College of Business offers a B.S. in Finance on the St. Petersburg campus.

View more information about options on the USF Tampa and Sarasota-Manatee campuses .

Finance AT USF ST. PETERSBURG

Two students sitting at a table looking at a laptop screen.

The Finance program at USF’s St. Petersburg campus equips students with understanding of banking, credit, investments, assets and liabilities that compose a financial system, as well as the role of institutions within domestic and global financial markets. Students may choose to learn about investments and trading, asset management, commercial banking, corporate finance, financial planning, insurance, investment banking, money management and real estate.

As a major in the business field, finance theory is studied and developed within the context of statistics, economics, management, accountancy and applied mathematics. Given its wide application, there are several related professional qualifications within the field, the most widely recognized ones with greatest rigor are the Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP). The CFA Society of Tampa Bay encourages student members.

Finance students at USF’s St. Petersburg campus have the opportunity to gain real world investment experience by enrolling in the Student Managed Investment Fund program (SMIF) where classes are held in the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Center in Lynn Pippenger Hall. Furthermore, students may also make use of the great internship opportunities available locally, thanks to strong ties with Tampa Bay’s booming financial industry. Our alumni have been hired by firms like Raymond James, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi and PwC.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN Finance

Always refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for degree requirements. Students will normally begin progress toward the major by taking at least one course from the major core, as these often serve as prerequisites for the electives. Students are urged to consult with the finance advisor to create the most beneficial set of courses.

The university ranked No. 5 on the Best MBA for Finance list, rating in the top 10 for the seventh consecutive year. Rice’s online MBA landed at No. 4 on the list of Top 50 Online MBA Programs , marking the program’s third straight year in the top five.

Jones Graduate School of Business

Rice was the only university in Texas to be ranked in the top 10 in both of these categories.

“These rankings are indicative of the high-quality education offered through all of our MBA programs. Students studying finance at Rice Business are taught by faculty whose research and expertise enhances core classes and hard skills, so students are not just prepared to be successful in their careers, but they are also prepared to think critically about their roles and to lead in their industry,” said Peter Rodriguez, dean of Rice Business. “These rankings are also indicative of our broader approach: offering students flexibility in their pursuit of an MBA, while retaining the experience of studying with world-class faculty — no matter what program they choose.”

Rice also achieved high rankings in other specialty categories. It climbed into the top 10 for having the Greatest Resources for Women , ranking No. 8. In addition, the university ranked No. 10 for having the Greatest Resources for Minority Students .

The Princeton Review’s 2024 business school rankings are uniquely based on data the company gathers from its surveys of administrators at 409 business schools as well as surveys of 32,200 students enrolled in the schools’ MBA programs.

“The schools that made our list for 2024 all have impressive individual distinctions,” said Rob Franek, The Princeton Review’s editor-in-chief. “What they share are three characteristics that broadly informed our criteria for these rankings: outstanding academics, robust experiential learning components and excellent career services. Equally impressive to us — and probably to prospective applicants — is that every one of our best b-schools for 2024 garnered highly favorable ratings among its MBA students we surveyed.”

The complete ranking lists are posted at www.princetonreview.com/best-business-schools , along with The Princeton Review’s in-depth profiles of the schools and its ratings of the schools on topics from admissions selectivity to academic experience.

Is a Master's in Finance Worth It?

A woman standing at her desk working on her laptop next to a dollar sign on a blue background.

Understanding the Numbers When reviewing job growth and salary information, it’s important to remember that actual numbers can vary due to many different factors — like years of experience in the role, industry of employment, geographic location, worker skill and economic conditions. Cited projections do not guarantee actual salary or job growth.

Sal Sadiq, an adjunct finance instructor at SNHU.

In the fast-paced field of finance, an advanced degree may be one consideration to help you stand out as a job applicant and provide skills and knowledge beneficial in leadership roles. But in today’s world of evolving financial regulations and workplace requirements, is a master’s in finance worth it?

The true value of a finance master’s degree depends on your specific career goals.

“In the past decade, there is a lot of demand for people in emerging areas of finance, such as FinTech and digital assets,” said Sal Sadiq , an adjunct finance instructor at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). “A master’s degree can open doors into these areas of finance. And, of course, the traditional areas of finance continue to exist, and a master’s degree can open new doors.”

So, is a master’s degree in finance worth pursuing? To make this decision, you’ll need to consider what this credential could do for your career and your life.

What is a Master's Degree in Finance?

A master’s degree is a type of graduate degree  that can help you build advanced knowledge in your chosen field. Master’s degrees are typically two-year programs that follow a bachelor’s degree and dive deeper into specific subject matter.

A master’s degree in finance can help you explore different areas of the field in more detail and build key analytical and quantitative skills, said Sadiq.

Every finance master’s degree program is unique, but they typically include courses in financial analysis and risk management. At SNHU, for example, graduate-level finance courses include:

  • Risk Management
  • Financial Modeling
  • International Corporate Finance
  • Money and Capital Markets
  • Quantitative Analysis for Decision-Making

You may also be able to choose a concentration for your finance degree and dive deeper into an area of specialization. With a finance master's degree from SNHU you can choose to focus on:

  • Corporate Finance: Take on the challenges of today’s complex and ever-changing corporate financial environment.
  • Investments: Analyze assets, debt, equity, securities, investment strategies and portfolios.

Who Can Earn a Finance Master’s Degree?

While many students who enter finance master’s degree programs already have a background in business, accounting or other financial fields, it’s not required, said Sadiq.

As long as you have a bachelor's degree, you can apply for and work through a master’s in finance.

Sadiq, for example, said he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology with a minor in economics and business administration before earning a master’s in finance. Today, he has more than 25 years of experience in the regulatory industry, overseeing capital-raising transactions in the public and private sectors.

Is a Master’s in Finance a Lot of Math?

Earning a finance master’s degree does require some math. Most finance degrees include a mathematics and statistics course, in addition to courses such as financial modeling and economics.

Sadiq said basic math and algebra skills are typically enough to complete the courses needed for a finance degree. Analyzing and understanding financial data is also crucial to success in the finance field.

Is a Master’s in Finance Better Than an MBA?

If you’re interested in an advanced finance degree, you could pursue a Master of Science (MS) in Finance or a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance. While both degrees are graduate-level programs that can prepare you for financial careers, they do differ.

According to Sadiq, while an MS degree dives deep into different areas of finance, an MBA can provide a broader perspective beyond finance alone.

In addition to industry-specific technical skills, MBA programs leverage real-world learning, cultivate general business knowledge and provide in-demand soft skills such as leadership, communication and collaboration.

The MBA in Finance  at SNHU, for example, includes courses about leading organizational change, innovation and business strategy, and measuring success in an organization.

Whether you earn an MBA or a traditional master's degree in finance, you can prepare to start or advance a finance career. Determining which finance degree is better is a personal decision that can vary depending on your specific career goals.

In-Demand Credential

According to BLS data, the number of jobs requiring a master’s degree is on the rise. Jobs requiring a master’s degree are projected to grow 11.3% between 2022 and 2032, while jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree are expected to grow 6.7% over the same period, according to BLS.*

Jobs in the finance industry, specifically, are also expected to see significant growth over the next decade.

Employment of personal financial advisors, for example, is projected to grow 13% from 2022 to 2032, according to BLS data.* Jobs for financial managers and financial analysts are expected to grow 16% and 8% , respectively, over the same period, BLS data shows.*

Salary Potential

A yellow money symbol on a blue background

Master’s degree holders also have a higher earning potential than workers with a bachelor’s degree, according to BLS data.*

In 2023, workers with a master’s degree brought home median weekly earnings of $1,737 , compared to $1,493 for bachelor’s degree holders.*

And within the finance field, specifically, salary potential is strong.*

The median annual wage for financial managers was $156,100 in 2023, according to BLS.* Top executives, including chief financial officers, earned a median wage of $206,680 the same year, BLS data shows.*

Job Stability

Earning a finance master’s degree can also give you more job security.

According to BLS data, the unemployment rate for master’s degree holders in 2023 was just 2%, lower than the average for bachelor’s degree holders (2.2%) and associate degree holders (2.7%).*

Is a Master’s Degree in Finance Right for Me?

A master’s degree in finance can be a key credential when applying to high-level jobs in the field or seeking a promotion. But it does require commitment and investment. Before enrolling in a finance degree program, make sure the degree coursework aligns with your professional goals.

“A master's degree in finance requires a lot of work and diligence,” said Sadiq. “It is often difficult juggling a career and family responsibilities. But there will be many long-term opportunities that can open up, and it can yield long-term dividends for the student.”

19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice President

Mr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, in a gray T-shirt and baseball cap, speaks at a Kamala Harris event in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

By Simon J. Levien and Maggie Astor

  • Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 9, 2024

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
