Padres' Catcher Was Blown Away By Joe Musgrove's Return From IL

Joe Musgrove walked off the field at Petco Park to a standing ovation Monday. As he walked back to the dugout, he looked toward the stands tapped his heart and waved.

The moment for Musgrove was more than two months in the making, and he deserved it after pitching 4.1 scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"It's just so good to have him back," catcher Kyle Higashioka said after the game. “He’s definitely one of the guys who’s the heart and soul of this team. It feels right having him back on this mound again and he was sharp as ever. Maybe even sharper than he was at the beginning of the season. Everything was working, it was good.”

Musgrove didn't get a decision but he pitched well enough to earn a win. The victory marked the Padres’ 17th in their past 20 games.

The best news revolved around Musgrove's return.

“I think he was crisper than we all could have imagined with all the time he missed,” Bogaerts said . “… It’s really nice.”

Musgrove walked a batter with two outs in the first, allowed a one-out single in the second and hit a batter with one out in the third.

“It just felt good, man,” Musgrove said afterward. “I mean, this is where I feel the best. Obviously, with the way we’re playing, I want to be part of that. I want to contribute. So, yeah, it felt incredible to be back out there.”

It had been 77 days since Musgrove’s last start and at that time, Musgrove was struggling to find the form that made him one of the best starting pitchers in the league back in 2021 and 2022. He entered Monday having made just 10 starts this season and with a 5.66 ERA.

“He was fantastic,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “... Everything looked good. I loved his tempo. Typical Joe, he was attacking guys. He made quality pitches. Good for him, and good for us to have Joe back.”

Musgrove missed more than 10 weeks because of inflammation and triceps tendinitis caused by a bone spur in his pitching elbow. He has had to alter his delivery to ease the burden on his elbow.

If Musgrove can return to form, it will be a huge boost for the Padres, who are holding on to an NL Wild Card spot tightly. They also begin a run of 18 games in 18 days on Friday.

“The guys have been playing with a lot of emotion and intent, but when you get Joe Musgrove back, it takes it to another level,” Shildt said. “You get your cornerstone of the club back, a guy that means a lot to this club in a lot of different areas. And he was tremendous tonight.”

Why Yankees dumped reliever they traded for 2 weeks ago

CHICAGO —  The Yankees needed to subtract one pitcher from their bullpen in order to make room for spot starter Will Warren on Wednesday in Chicago and righty Enyel De Los Santos — with his 14.21 ERA in pinstripes — was the odd man out.

De Los Santos was designated for assignment Wednesday afternoon. He was acquired from the Padres in one of the Yankees’ two trade deadline deals designed to upgrade their bullpen, but lasted only two weeks with the big-league club.

The Yankees needed to call up Warren because of the rainouts this past week at Yankee Stadium. The subsequent doubleheaders threw a wrench in their starting pitching plans, creating a hole in their five-man schedule during the White Sox series. Either they needed to roll with a bullpen game or a minor-league arm needed to be called up.

RESTORING THE GLORY

Warren was optioned back down to Triple-A less than 15 days ago, so normally, he’d be ineligible to be recalled again. Since the Yankees had an injury — Jazz Chisholm Jr. went on the IL with a left elbow strain on Wednesday — the 15-day timeline was no longer applicable. Former top prospect Oswald Peraza was also called up to take Chisholm’s spot, rounding out the sudden flurry of roster moves .

The only pitcher in the Yankees’ bullpen that has minor-league options available is Jake Cousins. He wasn’t going to be demoted, though. Cousins has carved out a role for himself in the back of the bullpen, earning the first save of his MLB career in a win over the White Sox on Tuesday night. He has a 2.14 ERA since June 27.

Had De Los Santos pitched better, the Yankees could’ve cut ties with another arm. The right-hander didn’t do himself any favors over his first five outings with his new team. De Los Santos didn’t have one clean outing. He gave up a hit in each of his first two scoreless appearances before allowing 10 runs over his next four innings, including a seven-run meltdown against the White Sox in Monday’s embarrassing loss at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“It was a tough call,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Feel like he’s better than certainly the last couple results he’s had, but those things come up over the course of the year. In this case, the rainouts put us up against it. We didn’t feel like we could get through with just a full bullpen day, so had to make the tough call.”

Asked if he can pinpoint what went wrong with De Los Santos, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake singled out the right-hander’s fastball. Blake gave De Los Santos some grace with the challenges of adjusting to a new team as well.

“I think he’s better than how he pitched here,” Blake said. “Career wise, he’s been better than that. Just got to a spot where he wasn’t quite commanding the fastball the way he wanted to, wasn’t quite getting slider where he wanted to and got thrown into some tough spots where he had to pick up some length, which is never ideal. You’d like to get him against the righties as much as possible. And then he just got into a roster jam.”

The Yankees traded speedy outfield prospect Brandon Lockridge to the Padres in the De Los Santos deal. They also acquired minor-league pitcher Thomas Balboni Jr. from San Diego in the trade.

Dodgers dfa amed rosario two weeks after acquiring him as mookie betts returns.

Amed Rosario’s second stint with the Dodgers came to a quick halt on Monday two weeks after Los Angeles acquired him at the trade deadline late last month. 

Rosario was designated for assignment after LA reinstated Mookie Betts from the 10-day injured list. 

Rosario, who spent his first four big league seasons with the Mets, had only made 12 plate appearances for the Dodgers after the trade while hitting .273 with three hits and two RBIs. 

He also made three appearances in the infield for the Dodgers. 

The Dodgers sent minor league reliever Michael Flynn to the Rays in exchange for the infielder/outfielder, who was dealt to Los Angeles at the deadline for the second consecutive season. 

Rosario had signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Rays in the offseason and had hoped to bounce back after a rough 2023 season which he split between Cleveland and Los Angeles. 

The move is a tough one the Dodgers had to make with Betts coming off the IL and it allows a player that can be utilized at several positions in the field hit the open market.

Betts returns to the Dodgers after being sidelined since June 16 with a fractured left hand.

The Dodgers had already decided that Betts would not bat leadoff or man the infield when he returned to the field. 

“He is most confident right now in right field versus at shortstop,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters .

Los Angeles placed Betts in right field in Monday’s series opener with the Brewers and had him bat second behind Shohei Ohtani. 

The Dodgers have been reeling from injuries and Betts’ return is welcomed by the organization, which will need to make some more tough roster decisions as those players return to the lineup as time passes.
